Dear Readers

Welcome to the fantastic month of September, the Costa Blanca has so much to offer during this month although we do expect to be a little more comfortable with a cooler and fresher climate. So what’s happening with the weather as so far it’s been getting hotter and hotter as the week progressed? For me it’s been the air con controller at the ready and it is on more than off at the moment. Just not looking forward to getting the next electricity bill :( With Benidorm Pride this weekend the streets of the Old Town will be packed out with party goers and of course we hope to meet as many of them as we can as we visit many of the bars as we can and get in amongst the action. Watch out for the photos and reports in the next issue of the Buzz Newspaper. September is one of the most popular months for British visitors as the weather is superb so for beach holidays its ideal. Now the children are back to school we can really see the landscape of each town along the coast change with the best nights out as well as the space along the beaches and with parking back to normal it a relief for those that live here as we get a little bit tired of the hustle and bustle of the summer months. Read on to hear our very exciting news that is the launch of our brand new radio Planet Benidorm the only station dedicated to the thousands of British visitors arriving every day at Alicante airport who when travelling to the resort will be welcomed by our very own Radio presenters Ian Bennett and the very well known Max Factor. This pair of fun loving music mad characters will entertain on average 15,000 arrivals a week whilst travelling on the bus transfers into Benidorm and the surrounding areas. You can also listen live every day on your phone, tablet or PC at www.PLANETBENIDORM.FM

Over 2000 People Forced To Leave Homes

By Spencer WIlliams

From Front Page...the intensity of the disastar. The fires initially broke out on Sunday on the Cumbre del Sol mountain but quickly spread due to the hgh tempretures and extremly dry forest areas. The police confirmed quickly that the fires were caused deliberately and that they had found petrol canisters. Reports and rumours flooded social media of two teenagers being arrested and apparently said “They were paid to do it”.

Despite the reported arrest, fires still continued to emerge suspiciously as well as areas which had not been fully controlled as winds picked up during the evenings which carried hot embers to other wooded areas sparking even more small fires. Most of the fires were put out or under control by Wednesday, thanks to the tremendous and brave work to all the firefighters and pilots of the planes and helicopters that battled for hours in extreme conditions. Monday was the hottest September day ever recorded in Alicante

By David Rogers

A maximum of 42.9 in Orihuela on the hottest September day ever in Alicante Residents of the province of Alicante may have enjoyed the coolest month of August in the last 30 years, but they are certainly paying the price in the Örst week of September! This Monday saw the afternoon temperatures soaring above 40 degrees in many parts of the province, with the maximum of 42.9ºC in Orihuela making it the hottest day of the year so far and at the same time the warmest September day on record in the Costa Blanca. This maximum was exceeded in Sevilla and the Region of Murcia,

but even so temperatures were also comfortably over 40 in Novelda (42.2º), Rojales and Pinoso (both 41 degrees). Only twice have higher temperatures been higher at the weather station of Alicante-Elche airport in El Altet, namely in July 1994 and July 2015, and in the Comunidad Valenciana as a whole Monday was the warmest September day since at least 1950. The good news is that the province of Alicante is set to cool down a little on Tuesday, but temperatures will still be considerably higher than is usual forthe time of year and signiÖcantrelief is not expected until Thursday.

Police Still Hunt For Hit & Run Culprit

By David Rogers

Police are still searching for the man who mowed down a British man . A nationwide search is underway for the owner of a UK registered white land rover – Registration plate SK13 MWM – which was involved in a hit and run accident which left a British man dead. 61 year-old Robert Sneddon from Guardamar in the Costa Blanca died when the car struck him on Sunday night. Guardia Civil said the driver then left the scene. Now a forensic investigation of the car is underway, and police forces are working with

British agencies as well as Interpol to locate the driver of the vehicle. If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of the driver, they are being asked to speak to their local police station.

New Housing Benefit Limits For Claimants Going Abroad People living in Great Britain can now only receive Housing Benefit for 4 weeks if they are out of the country. Previously, housing benefit claimants could continue having their rent paid for up to 13 weeks.

By Foreign & Commonwealth Office Press Release

The new rules, which came into force last month, prevent claimants from taking long drawn-out trips outside Great Britain while receiving taxpayer help with their rent, as well as bringing Housing Benefit into line with Jobseeker’s Allowance and other working age benefits, which already have stricter limits. Those in receipt of Pension Credit also face a reduction in the time they can continue to receive their benefit whilst abroad, from 13 weeks to 4 weeks. Minister for Welfare Delivery, Caroline Nokes said: “It’s important that the benefits system is fair to those who need it and those who pay for it. “It’s not right that people could be abroad for over three months and still expect the taxpayer to pay their rent back home.

“These new rules mean that people can still enjoy holidays like everyone else, but will ensure that the system isn’t abused.” For further information on these changes or to find out what exemptions apply, contact your local benefit office. Those who are permanent residents overseas remain unable to claim incomerelated benefits for any period of time. These include benefits such as Housing Benefit, Pension Credit or Universal Credit. If you suspect someone of committing benefit fraud in Spain, call the Benefit Fraud Hotline on 900 55 444 0. Calls are free and confidential. You can also report a benefit thief online at www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud. Help make sure that benefits go to those who need them most.

Over 3 Tonnes Of Hashish Seized In International Police Operation

Press Release

A joint operation between Polish, Spanish and Italian law enforcement authorities, coordinated by Europol,

has resulted in the arrest of 13 individuals and the seizure of over 3 tonnes of hashish. The criminal network was mainly based in Spain

and is suspected of having made substantial profit by shipping narcotics from Morocco to a number of European countries and organising their further distribution. Several action days took place during the course of the investigation which began in 2014. Earlier this year, based on information provided by the Polish Border Guards and Central Bureau of Investigation, the Spanish Guardia Civil supervised a comprehensive international monitoring operation to follow a ship flying the Polish flag which was suspected of being used to smuggle drugs from North Africa to Spain. In July 2016, the vessel was located in the Italian territorial waters. The Italian Guardia di Finanza and DCSA boarded and secured the vessel, escorting it to the port of Civitavecchia (Italy). 3.3 tonnes of hashish were subsequently discovered in the deck of the vessel and the 2 Polish crew members arrested. The criminal network was run

by a Polish national, who was arrested during a house search in Marbella (Spain) on 26 July 2016. House searches were also carried out simultaneously in Poland. This individual was considered to be one of the most active in the transport and distribution of hashish in Europe and was under investigation in Spain, Poland and Germany. The arrestee was the leader of a criminal group particularly active in Poland in the 1990s which is suspected to have been involved in serious crimes such as murders, extortions and kidnappings. Europol has supported the investigations from the early phases by facilitating the exchange of information and operational meetings at the international level. During the action day on 26 July, a Europol mobile office was deployed to Spain. This allowed for real – time exchange of information and cross-checks of the data gathered in the course of the action against Europol’s databases.

British Cars Stolen in Spain Used to Transport Drugs Through Europe

By Spencer WIlliams

A MAJOR cannabis-smuggling ring that used stolen British cars to transport drugs from Spain to the UK has been smashed. Among those arrested in the joint operation between Spanish and UK police are 12 Brits, nine Spaniards and a German. Largely based on the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca, the gang would load up the stolen vehicles in Spain before driving through France and on to the UK via the Channel Tunnel. Cars stolen in the south of Spain would be

taken to Barcelona to ‘cool off’ for a few months before being used in drug runs. Each car would transport around 100 kilos of cannabis concealed in specially-adapted secret compartments. In total, around 300 kilos of cannabis has been impounded plus some €240,000 in cash. Some cars not used for smuggling were sold on in other countries, including Portugal and Italy, police investigators said.

Catch Some Rays!! The British visitors and even the locals from across the Costa Blanca enjoy a regular feast of the famous favourite from back home and still a British Favourite in Spain “FISH & CHIPS” The UK seaside special is still one of the most popular dishes to eat in Spain and now for over 30 years Ray’s II Chippy have been serving the best fish and chips in town. A day out in Benidorm would most be the same without a visit to Ray’s II and now for an even better experience a golden opportunity has arrived. The new Impact Vouchers web site has been welcomed here in Benidorm and with a very special offer, so you can now enjoy the delicious golden battered cod served with the best chips in town for an even better price. Owners June & Steve are originally from Leeds, since 1985 they continue to put a big smile on the

faces of their customers by serving top quality fish and chips. So what makes Rays ll stand out from the rest and makes the real difference to the quality? talking to June and Steve they explained “the prime Icelandic Cod is skinless and k the best chunky fish fillets cooked fresh for each order. Also we use only high grade sunflower seed oil making your fish and chips vertically cholesterol free”. So what about the chips I asked “Chips are not just chips you can find all sorts of chips around thin, fat literally hundreds of types, we our proud of our chips at Rays 11 you get fresh potato chips not frozen and they are cooked fresh to perfection”. My visit would not be comp, etc without tucking in to a plate of fish and chips and I was so glad I did, the batter was golden and crispy and when cutting through to the chunky white fillet you could see how soft and tender the fish was. It taste amazing and together with the mushy peas and delicious chunky chips I was appreciating every moment. The portion size was generous in fact I had no space for a dessert although I had noticed that the menu has a

host of British favourites that include homemade apple crumble, trifle, cheesecake, treacle or jam sponge and custard, chocolate fudge cake with hot chocolate sauce are just some of the desserts available. June and Steve gave me some of the history because I had like most people who have been to Benidorm noticed that there are three Fish and Chip Restaurants called Rays. Rays 1 is in the Old Town and was the first Rays Chippy in Benidorm but is not the same owners as Rays II. The original Rays team together with June and Steve included the three restaurants until they made them independent. June and Steve are the owners of Rays II and you can easily find them just behind EuroTabaco on the main Avenida Mediterraneo in the Rincon only one street back from the beach front. We recommend you visit Rays ll and don’t forget to print your special offer voucher from www.impactvouchers.com The prices and special offers in this article can only be found in Rays II.

Back to School Eye Health Advice Specsavers Opticas are committed to helping people of all ages to see clearly and keep their eyes healthy. This is why, in time for the back to school rush, they are offering kids’ eye tests for free throughout September and each store is donating 10 pairs of glasses to their local school or charity. Specsavers Opticas are also offering parents advice, throughout the month of September, on how to keep their children’s eyes healthy: “As parents we like to give our children the best start in life, and seeing well is intrinsically linked to so many behavioural, social and educational issues that it’s vital to help them care for their eyes. By simply taking them for regular eye tests and teaching them how to avoid damaging their eyes in play, you can help them to protect their eyes and identify any issues early so they do not effect development. Here are some simple tips you can teach your child so they are aware of potential hazards to their sight 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Never poke things into your eyes, not even fingers. Never play with strong chemicals, like washing-up liquid, washing powder or bleach. Getting these in your eyes can be very dangerous. Never throw sand or dirt in anyone’s face. Never look straight at the sun – not even through dark glasses. The bright light from the sun can burn your retina. If an optician suggests you need to wear glasses – wear them! Always wear sunglasses which block out the sun’s harmful rays in bright sunshine. Always wear safety glasses when you handle harmful substances.

As well as helping children to protect their eyes, identifying any problems with your child’s eyesight is very important in their early years. Poor vision can effect social and educational development throughout their whole life if the problem goes undetected, so it’s vital to take them for regular tests from the age of 3. Look out for signs such as sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes or complaining of headaches, which can indicate there’s a problem. If you see any of these signs, take them for a test right away. Full eye tests are free at Specsavers Opticas for all children under 16 years throughout September, and they don’t need to be able to read to have one.” Specsavers Opticas currently has eight stores in Spain; Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol, Santa Ponça Mallorca, Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca. Visit www.specsavers.es for more advice and information about eye care, to find your nearest store and book a free back to school eye test.

Help! My Dog Is Being Bothered By Flies For those of us who know the frustration of biting flies, the situation can seem incredibly difficult to solve. Today we will give you some simple strategies that really do work to get rid of those pesky flies for good. FLIES LIKE POO The simple truth is that flies are attracted to poo and will happily lay their eggs in any uncollected piles of dog faeces, compost or mulch around your home. In warm weather the fly breeding cycle is so short that you may need to pick up the poo twice daily (or more!). Ideally train your dog to toilet in just one are of the yard to make the poo patrol easier. THEY ALSO LOVE FOOD Avoid leaving your dog’s food out during the day, as this will also attract flies and encourage more of them to breed and set up home at your place. Also avoid leaving old bones around. This is also an important food safety issue, as any food left at room temperature for more than 4 hours is likely to breed dangerous bacteria. WHY DO SOME DOGS SEEM TO BE BITTEN MORE? Certain breeds such as Labradors and German Shepherds seem to be more affected by biting flies than others. Those dogs with longer ears are

certainly more at risk, mainly because the hair is thinner in this area and the blood vessels are close to the skin. FLY-FREE AREAS If your dog has access to a kennel or shed, place some plastic strips across the doorway, like we used to have in the old corner deli. These hanging strips help to brush off the flies as your pet enters and hopefully provide. CLEAN THOSE EARS If your dog is constantly getting bitten by flies those ears tend to get ulcerated, which then attracts more flies. Use saline or chlorhexidine to clean those ears and remove any crusts. You can then apply an antiseptic cream and fly repellent to keep those flies away. KEEP THOSE FLIES AWAY As well as a topical cream, you can use Permoxin spray as a flea, tick and biting insect repellent. You often need to reapply it daily during the warmer weather, but it is incredibly cost effective as you only need to use 10ml in a standard 400ml spray bottle of water. If you want to make your own homemade potion to apply to the ear tips, add 1ml of permoxin concentrate to a 40ml tub of Vaseline and apply to those ear tips. If the ears are very sore and infected, clean them and apply a non-adherent dressing first or use a ‘Buzz Off’ antiseptic cream instead. Being a pyrethrin based product, you need to keep it away from cats. So while it can take a little bit of work, the problem of biting flies is actually fairly simple to solve. Remove what the flies are attracted to (the bleeding ears and faeces), then keep them away with a fly repellent cream. Just watch out for those dangerous and ineffective remedies involving human skincare products, essential oils and garlic (very toxic to pets!). Ask your Veterinarian or Dog Groomer about appropriate alternative products and other flea/fly/tick repellents are available to you depending on where you live.

Day Out In Denia Dénia is located on the east coast of Spain, along the coastal stretch known as the Costa Blanca. Denia is very much a family resort and one of the most popular tourist destinations on the northern Costa Blanca. A quiet little town that was once the centre of the region’s raisin growing industry. Although tourism has taken over, raisins are still grown here and remain to be a local delicacy. The main avenue in Dénia is the Marques de Campo where you can sit and watch the world go by. In the Plaza de Constitucion you will find a wonderful 17th century church. The area around Dénia has been voted the third healthiest place to live by the World Health Organisation.

What to see in Dénia

Dénia is an old town with a long history. Right back to Roman times it was an important centre. As such there’s no wonder that there are remains of ancient civilizations everywhere. One of the most important monuments in Dénia is the castle. You can read all about Denia Castle and see a video here. The castle also houses a museum. It was built in the 11th century and has been remodelled several times over the years. You can find the castle at the top end of Denia, close to the town hall. Access is via a maze of narrow streets. The main seafront in Dénia is an attractive road with ample parking and facilities to stop and eat and drink. From the seafront,

small roads lead into the town. Behind the first line of buildings are a series of small patios where you will find some superb restaurants amid the little fishermens’ houses, all painted different colours. There are some quirky restaurants in this area that make a pleasant change from the seafront. The Marina Dénia is not only one of the most important ports along this coast of Spain but it also has a wonderful marina. The marina has been totally refurbished over recent years and now provides a stunning location to walk, sail and enjoy the facilities there. The waterside is surrounded by bars, cafes and restaurants with a sprinkling of shops and offices. To the side of the marina is a small bay beach. Calle Marques de Campos is the main shopping street. Here you will find most of the major banks as well as designer shops such as Mango.

Barrios Antiguos (Old quarter)

This is where you will find the town hall, churches, museums and lots of narrow streets. Every street is diffrerent and there are some quaint little shops. The Town Hall in Dénia is a fine example of a classical building, built around 1620. There is a unique stone inscription on the wall dedicated to a Roman Dénia of the 2nd century, Titus Junius. You can find the town hall at the foot of the castle in the historic part of town. The town hall have several staff that speak English and

are very helpful. Take a ticket from the information desk when you arrive then wait for your number to be called. Recent works on the square in front of the town hall have revealed Roman foundations. Beneath the castle is the old Air Raid Tunnel which was built between 1937 and 1938 as a defense during the Spanish Civil War. It was constructed by the residents of Dénia and war refugees. (March 2011 - the area is being refurbished). Shopping and markets in Dénia Monday is the main market day in Dénia (8am-2pm). There is also an antiques market on Fridays (pictured right). Both are located in front of Jaume I Square. The fresh fish market is located in the port and has a daily auction at 5pm. The indoor market in the centre of town is open daily. There’s also a morning fruit and veg market outside.

Finding your way around Dénia The backdrop to Dénia is the Montgo mountain with its natural park (Parque Natural del Montgo) where you can take amazing walks. Behind the mountain you will find the little villages of Jesus Pobre and Pedreguer.

Dénia is divided into clear areas (Terminos). The old town centre is the Casco Urbano. To the left of Dénia is the Las Marinas area and to the right is Las Rotas. Some of the larger urbanizations in Dénia include La Sella (surrounding the golf course). Most of the street parking in Dénia is free, however, where spaces are marked with blue lines, you need to purchase a ticket from the machines and display in your windscreen. 127 minutes for 1€ is the maximum stay. One of the nicest avenues in Dénia is Marques de Campo. The trees on either side meet in the middle, offering a shade in the summer. There are some nice shops on this street as well as some fine cafes and restaurants. The N°11 Bar is particularly nice. The historic part of Dénia is best seen on foot as the streets are very narrow with limited parking. You will find several plazas in which to rest.

Growing Strawberries In Spain

Surely one of the highlights for any gardener is eating berries you have grown and nurtured yourself. Not only do they taste sweeter when they are home-grown, but berries like strawberries are one of the easiest fruiting plants to grow and enjoy. Let your children have a few plants of their own too, I guarantee they will love it.

rot fungus Verticillium which also attacks strawberries. Position your plants about 30cm apart, in full sun. Strawberries do best in welldrained soil, so plant them into soil that has been mounded up slightly. The crown of the plant, which is the swollen stem base,

laying directly on the soil. Strawberries are very desirable to creatures other than humans. Birds, slugs, snails and other garden creatures compete for the luscious fruit. Bird netting or wire mesh stretched over the plants may help. Repel snails and

Getting started: Buy some virus-free plants (strawberries are prone to disease) or get some healthy runners from friends or family. About 20-30 plants provide enough fruit for a family, but even a couple of plants can be a delight to grow. Prior to planting, dig over the soil to remove weeds and any large Gardening in Spain Strawberries clods, and add in plenty of compost or other organic material. Do not plant strawberries where tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, or eggplant have been grown in the past four years, because these crops carry the root

must be left at the surface of the soil and not buried too deep. Place a mulch of straw around the base of the strawberry plants to help keep the moisture in the ground, control the weeds and keep the fruit from

slugs by sprinkling pet-safe snail bait around the perimeter of plants. If you only have a small space like a courtyard or balcony you can still grow strawberries because they do quite well in a large pot.

Use your vertical space by planting your strawberry plants in one of the large ceramic pots with planting holes at different levels, or try “flying strawberries in hanging pots. As long as they are planted in a rich well-draining soil and you keep them well-watered you will get plenty of cropping.

Water well, especially when the young plants are establishing, and during dry summers. To boost fruit production, feed your plants some fertilizer high in potash as they start flowering. Remove brown or soggy fruit to avoid grey mould (botrytis), and regularly apply a milk spray (one part milk to nine parts water) to avoid powdery mildew. Over summer, strawber-

ry plants send out runners that take root to form a new plant. If you do not need new plants, cut these Gardening in Spain Strawberriesrunners off. Removing the runners as they appear will encourage the plant to put more of its effort into the production of fruit. After fruiting has finished, tidy up the plants by giving them a hard prune down to 10cm. After four years, plants become underproductive. Remove old plants and replant with new virus-free stock. Or gradually replace old plants with new ones. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and have, gram for gram, more of it than a citrus fruit. One good handful delivers the daily recommended allowance as well as a long list of important minerals, fibre, and also provides 20% of our folic acid requirements. All that at about only 50 calories per serving of a generous handful. So go ahead and enjoy your strawberries

How Much Discount Are Prospective Property Buyers Asking for?

Despite the fact that the property market is in a much more positive state at the moment, and the number of sales are going up, as are property prices in many areas, the reality of it is that prospective buyers are still asking sellers for substantial discounts on the sale price of their homes.

In many cases, these discounts are as much as 20% or even more depending on the autonomous region that the property is situated. Statistics have revealed that on average in the month of July, prospective buyers were offering approximately 20.9% off the purchase price fixed by the property owner.

This figure is slightly less than the average discount wanted last year, when buyers were offering 21.6% less.

Autonomous regions The biggest difference between the amount of money offered for a property and the price being asked for by the seller is found in the region of La Rioja. Here, those wanting to purchase a home are offering around 23.6% less than the sale price of the property. La Rioja is followed by Cantabria (-23.5%), Murcia (-22.7%) and the Valencia Region (-22.6%). Madrid, on the other hand, is the region in which the amount of money

being offered and asked for is closest, with approximately 16.5% lower than the asking price being offered by purchasers. Madrid is followed by Navarra and the Basque Country, at 19.7%. Madrid is also the region where buyers have most reduced the amount of discount asked for off the sale price. This could be an indication of the fact that property prices are rising and the offer of property available is reduced. This is followed by AndalucĂa and Castilla-La Mancha. However, there are seven auton-

omous regions where prospective buyers are offering even less money (bigger discounts) than they were a year ago. The list is headed by Cantabria and followed by Asturias, Galicia, and the Balearic Islands.

Large cities There is also a big difference in figures offered and asked for in Spain’s largest cities. In Cuenca, for example, buyers are only asking for a discount of 10.9%, while in the cases of Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and JaÊn, the figure is more than 25%.

Alicante Is Third Best Province for Property Purchases in Spain

You can tell that the property sector is in recovery as there are so many more estate agents around than there were a few years ago. And it seems that many are selling quite a lot of properties too. This is particularly the case for the province of Alicante, as figures released by the School of Property Registrars have revealed that between April and June this year, a total of 7,901 homes were purchased, which is an increase of 20.7% from the same period last year. Already last year, in 2015, property purchases from the previous year had gone up by 10%. And the data shows that these are the best figures for property sales that we have seen since the summer of 2008, when the second quarter closed with 8,052 operations. These numbers are still a long way off what we were used to seeing during the time of the property bubble, which saw these figures doubled. However, it is definitely true to say that no one really wants to return to that level of activity if the end result is the same. In any case, with a total of 7,901 property transactions during the

of main residences, the market is slightly weaker, although experts believe that this will pick up some time next year. The situation is being helped by very affordable prices and the low rate of the Euribor. Re-sale properties were the most popular when it comes to the type of property investors have purchased. A total of 85% of all sales consisted of re-sale properties. As a whole, 107,838 homes were purchased during the second quarter of this year throughout the whole of Spain. This is 23.7% higher than for the same period in 2015.

second quarter of 2016, this means that Alicante is the third province in the whole of Spain with the greatest volume of operations. Alicante sits behind Madrid, with 15,540 purchases, and Barcelona, with 12,191. Although if we look at the number of houses sold for every 1,000 inhabitants in the province, Ali-

cante actually moves up to second position, just behind Malaga. While this is very positive news for the province, it must be noted that the majority of these property purchases are concentrated in the coastal areas, and consist of foreign investors buying a holiday home. This type of purchase makes up 50% of all the sales. With regards to the purchase

British MPs Debate Brexit Referendum Petition

UK politicians have debated a petition signed by more than four million people demanding a second referendum on whether Britain should leave or remain within the European Union. The debate, which took place in the British parliament’s second debating chamber on Monday, did not give MPs legal authority to decide on a second referendum, but idemonstrated that the Brexit debate is still raging in the country. British MPs are obliged to consider for debate any petition which receives more than 100,000 signatures.

“Almost half of those who voted in the June referendum wanted Britain to stay in the EU and some are still marching and protesting,”

said Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Phillips, reporting from London. “Not many believe a second referendum is likely, but they want Britain to keep close ties with Europe.” Prime Minister Theresa May has ruled out a second referendum, saying that she is preparing to trigger the formal divorce proceedings that would eventually take Britain out of the club it first joined in 1973.

‘Brexit must mean Brexit’ During the June 23 referendum, 17.4 million people, or 51.9 percent of the electorate, voted to leave the EU while 48.1 percent, or 16.1 million people, voted to stay. Some 4.14 million people have now signed the petition calling for a second referendum. During Monday’s debate, David Davis, Britain’s newly appointed Brexit minister, made it clear that the UK is leaving the EU.

“There will be no attempt to stay in the EU by the back door,” he said. “No attempt to delay, frustrate or thwart the will of the British people. No attempt to engineer a second referendum because some people didn’t like the first answer,” he said. Some MPs argued that even discussing a second referendum undermined the will of the British people. “Brexit must mean Brexit and it is up to every red-blooded democrat, no matter which side they were on before the result was known, to accept the clear electoral verdict and to pull together to deliver it as best we can,” said John Penrose, a Conservative politician. David Lammy, of the opposition Labour Party, said the public had been “lied to” during the

referendum campaign and a second vote on the Brexit deal was the only way out of a “constitutional crisis”. He said the meaning of Brexit was unclear, as were the terms whereby Britain would have access to the European single market. ”David Davis has come under some criticism not only from Labour MPs but also from the MPs from the governing Conservative Party,” said Al Jazeera’s Phillips. “They were mainly asking for more details. They were saying that the government is badly prepared for Brexit and it still does not have a clear plan for the way forward.” The Brexit result unleashed immediate political and financial market turmoil in Britain. The vote has also raised questions about the future of Britain and postWorld War II European integration, though the initial economic effect of the Brexit vote has been less negative than was predicted by those who campaigned to remain within the EU. Several lawsuits have been launched to force the government to accept that parliament should decide on whether Britain should trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which would begin the formal exit process from the EU, rather than allowing the prime minister to decide alone.

BREXIT UPDATES

GDP Grows 0.8% in Second Quarter Despite Misgovernment

The economy in Spain grew 0.8% between April and June this year. This is 0.1% more than the figure forecast by both the National Statistics Institute (INE) and the Bank of Spain. It’s also a fairly surprising result since there is still only an acting government in place, who is not allowed to adopt any new measures at the moment in order to fuel activity. With this new set of statistics for the second quarter of this year, Spain’s GDP has risen for the last four consecutive quarters. In all three previous quarters, GDP had risen by 0.8% each time. Much of this is attributed to an increase in household consumption and greater investment, which saw a quarterly rise of 0.7% and 1.3% respectively. With regards to the annual GDP, at the end of the second quarter this registered at 3.2%, 0.2% less than in the previous quarter. With an annual growth of 3.2%, this makes 10 consecutive quarters of positive growth from the previous year, with the last five quarters

registering a growth of more than 3%. Exports during the second quarter of 2016 grew 3% annually, from 3.8% to 6.8%, while imports also increased 1.2% to register at 6.6%.

Despite the good performance in the sectors of industry, agriculture and construction during the first three months of the year, figures were slightly down annually between April and June. For the services sector, however, the opposite applied, with an increase of 3.6% from last year.

Ryanair Offers 100,000 Cheap Flights to Travel in October & November We love it when one airline or another launches a special offer on flights, enabling passengers to travel around Europe or further afield for cheaper than they usually would. Once again it is the turn of Ryanair, who have just announced a huge discount on their autumn prices. The airline is giving away a total of 100,000 seats, with prices starting at 19,99 euro, and the flights must be booked to travel in October and November. Tickets to various European destinations will be available to book through the Ryanair website (www.ryanair.com) from this Monday 29 August.

The airline has communicated that this special offer on tickets has been launched in order to celebrate that latest statistics from the IATA (International Air Transport Association), which situate Ryanair as the most popular and used airline in the world in 2015. According to IATA, Ryanair transported more than 101.4 million passengers last year, which is 40 million more than the second airline in the ranking – Easyjet, with 62.6 million passengers. The Irish airline is the first airline in the world ever to carry more than 100 million passengers in a 12-month period.

Robin Kiely, head of communications for the airline, has said that this was possible due to the company’s attention to the client programme ‘Always Getting Better’ and, of course, their affordable prices, which are the cheapest in Europe. He also confirmed that the airline will continue to inaugurate new routes in the future, as well as adding other improvements including redesigned and redecorated cabins, innovative digital tools and even lower tariffs. This is so that next year it will be possible to carry more than 117 million passengers, improving on this year’s total by a further 16 million.

Toyota Mirai FCV 2015 The hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai is the future, quite literally – that’s what its name means in Japanese. However, it’s incredibly expensive at more than £65,000 and it’s not going to sell in big numbers – just a dozen or so cars a year in the UK. Instead this a showcase of how hydrogen fuel will work in years to come. And it’s seriously impressive. Filling up the hydrogen tank (or tanks, there are actually two linked together) takes a few minutes and

gives a range of more than 300 miles. Unfortunately, there are barely any places to fuel up with hydrogen, but Toyota hopes the infrastructure will come if the cars are made. It’s so dedicated that it has made most of the patents for the Mirai freely available. Despite its radical styling, the Mirai is incredibly easy to drive, with an automatic transmission, comfortable suspension and excellent refinement. The drive system makes a faint whir, but it’s so quiet the engineers have had to work hard to soundproof the car from other noise, like tyre roar and wind rush, with impressive results. Performance is good – peak power is 154PS and torque is 335Nm, available from zero rpm. Since there is no gearbox, acceleration is seamless, giving the Mirai great pace away from traffic lights. Since its only emissions are water, it falls into VED Band A and is free to tax. Space is reasonable, although there are only two

rear seats and taller back seat passengers will struggle for head room. Additionally the boot, while a decent size, isn’t as big as you might expect. On the plus side, there is plenty of equipment including a heated windscreen, heated steering wheel and heated seats, as well as leather upholstery. Price and infrastructure aside, the Toyota Mirai is a very convincing car. With a bigger network of filling stations and a lower purchase price – which will come with mass-production – there is great potential for the Mirai and cars like it as an alternative to range-restricted, slow-charging battery electric vehicles.

This Week In Automotive History

September, 1949 - VW is put back in German control After being turned over to British control following World War II Volkswagen is handed back to the German people on this day in 1949. Volkswagen, as it is well know, was a project started by Hitler to put Germany on wheels by producing an affordable and economical “People’s Car.” In 1934 Ferdinand Porsche, who just a few years earlier started and automotive consulting firm, was hired by Hitler to design the vehicle. The result became one of the best selling cars of all time. Following WWII the allies worked to put German people back to work to help them rebuild their country that had been destroyed by war. A big part of this was getting manufacturing facilities, such as VW at Wolfsburg, back up and running. The plant, which had been almost completely dismantled during the war, was back up and running a few months after the Germans surrendered and they were able to produce 1,785 Type 1s in 1945, nearly all of which went to occupying forces. On January 17, 1949, the first VW landed in the United States aboard the Holland America Line Westerdam when it pulled into New York Harbor. Ben Pon, a racecar driver from the Netherlands, brought the vehicle over, hoping to enjoy the same success he experienced in Rotterdam selling the car. He sold two cars that year. The next year Max Hoffman of Park Avenue showroom fame was able to sell 157 of the vehicles. Between 1949 and 1977 21,529,464 Beetles rolled out of dealer showrooms around the world.

All Motor Vehicles Must Be Insured By Law

DO I NEED TO INSURE MY VEHICLE EVEN IF IT’S OFF THE ROAD?

Some insurance policies like medical cover are not compulsory, others such as fire protection for your property, are. Your vehicle however, must be insured at all times, even if it’s kept off the road in a garage. The minimum legal compulsory insurance is Civil Liability to cover any damage to or claims from a third party, resulting from your vehicle. The existing legislation (Royal Decree 8/2004) states that any car that is kept in Spain must be insured. Trailers and other special types of vehicles that weigh less than 750 kg and cannot be driven on Spanish roads are not required to have insurance. This also means that they cannot be parked on roads or kept on private land. If you own a vehicle that’s not insured you could face a fixed penalty from €601 up to €3,005, and your vehicle may be seized and immobilised.

WHY DO I NEED TO INSURE MY CAR IF ITS KEPT IN A PRIVATE GARAGE

The owner of a vehicle has a civil responsibility towards their neighbour and their property. Civil responsibility extends beyond car accidents on Spanish roads. If a vehicle, for example, kept in a communal garage, has a fire due to a short circuit, the owner will be responsible for any resulting damages to third parties. The owner will also be liable for a fixed penalty fine, the amount will depend on the gravity of the situation, the length of time the vehicle has been without insurance, and if this is a repeat offense.

IN WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES IS INSURANCE NOT COMPULSORY? If your vehicle has officially been temporarily or permanently taken out of circulation, for example it has been scrapped, then no insurance is required. If you own a vehicle that is not being used and you wish to avoid paying for insurance, then you can apply to have it temporarily taken out of circulation. However, to do this the vehicle needs to have passed its MOT. If the MOT has expired, then it must be taken again and passed, before applying.

HOW CAN I AVOID ANY FIXED PENALTY FINES

The best option is to ensure you have adequate insurance protection for your vehicle at all times. Once your vehicle complies with Spanish regulations, you can then decide what the future use of your vehicle will be, and whether or not to keep it in circulation or take it out. If you require an insurance policy for your vehicle, you can contact Línea Directa on 902 123 161. They can supply you with a fast and efficient quote for either third party or fully comprehensive insurance.

New Floating Platforms Tested For Iconic Firework Display Next Month By Javeamigos

The Department of Fiestas has been testing a new system of floating platforms which has been commissioned for the launch of the iconic firework display that brings an end to the Fiesta Mare de Déu de Loreto on September 8th. For the past three years, a decree from the Generalitat Valencian has prevented the launching of pyrotechnics within 500 metres of any protected green zone, in this case the Parque Natural del Montgó, and the Ayuntamiento and Comisíon de Fiestas have been seeking an alternative launch point to maintain the necessary distance from the slopes of the Cap de Sant Antoni. Last year a system of floating platforms off the beach of La Grava was successfully utilised and councillor Antonio Miragall (Fiestas) explained that this year his department wanted to improve the system to give it more stability. Thus, two new aluminium base platforms of 42 square metres each have been added to one of the platforms used last year. This week, with the collaboration of the Cofradía de Pescadores the Fishermen’s Guild - and the pyrotechnic company Ricasa who will be launching the display as well as representatives from the Policía Local,

the Department carried out a test of the system to check its stability on the surface of the sea, its buoyancy and to determine any points which needed to be strengthened. The final approved platform system will be positioned on Tuesday 6th September, two days before the iconic firework display which will be launched at midnight on Thursday 8th September, bringing an end to the fiestas of Loreto Back in 2014 the Ministry of Infrastructure prohibited the use of the outer harbour wall for the launch of the display due to safety concerns. The directive was in response to a contingency plan that prohibited the launching to pyrotechnics within 500 metres of a protected green zone, in this case the Parque Natural del Montgó (click here to read more).

Despite appeals made to Valencia outlining 45 years of tradition without incident and the fact that the launch point lay just inside the exclusion zone together with various proposals to ensure maximum safety, the regional government stood by its decision (click here to read more as well as a statement issued at the time by mayor José Chulvi). The display for 2014 was cancelled, replaced by a more modest colourful mascletà in the centre of the port on the square of Avenida Jaime I. Ironically, just four three days later,

some 450 hectares of the Parque Natural del Montgó were destroyed in one of the fiercest infernos for many years (click here to read more). For the 2015 edition, it was announced that a series of floating platforms would be used to edge the launch point outside the 500m exclusion zone. However poor weather delayed the display for three days and it took place on Friday 11th September. Hopefully things will be back to normal for 2016.

Supporting Kids To Get Back To School With Clear Vision Specsavers Opticas are committed to helping people of all ages to see clearly and keep their eyes healthy. This is why, in time for the back to school rush, they are offering kids’ eye tests for free throughout September and each store is donating 10 pairs of glasses to their local school or charity. Mike Stone from Specsavers Opticas in Calpe and Javea explains, “Getting prepared for the start of the new term is busy and expensive and we’re aware that parents aren’t finding the time or money to get their kids’ eyes tested before they go back to school. We wanted to offer these free eye tests to encourage everyone to come in and make sure their kids are seeing clearly and that their eyes are healthy. It is particularly important with children, as it can be tough for them to explain their visual problems and if they go undiagnosed they can affect their performance at school and their general development.” Going back to school is a very expensive time for parents, with books, materials, new shoes and bags to buy, so the prospect of having to spend money on glasses can be worrying for parents. To help parents, each store is also donating ten pairs

of children’s glasses to their chosen school or charity, so that 80 children will be able to see more clearly this year. There are five Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca which are all donating glasses. The Benidorm store is continuing its collaboration with the Cruz Roja to ensure their frames are given to the families in the area who need it the most. The stores in Javea and Calpe have been helping the vulnerable children in the EMAUS children’s homes for many years and have donated these ten frames to them to help with the start of term. Finally, the stores in Torrevieja and Guardamar are donating frames to school kids at Los Cultures, so that the teachers can choose those families most in need of this support. Lisa James from the Torrevieja and Guardamar stores commented, “As part of our commitment to our community and our ten-year anniversary, we’re donating ten pairs of glasses per store to the Los Cultures school.

We are really pleased to be able to help twenty children to perform better at school and hope everyone has an excellent term.” Visit www.specsavers.es to make an appointment for the free back to school eye tests.

Boat with at least 8 Immigrants Reaches Torrevieja

By David Rogers

A small boat with at least 8 people on board, four of them children, reached the coast of Torrevieja early on Tuesday morning. It landed at the place known as Curva del Palangre, between El Cura and Los Locos beaches, and several Guardia Civil, medical services and Local Police were sent there.

The four minors, aged between 9 and 17, were taken to Torrevieja Hospital after first being treated by the medical services. The rest of the occupants, who are thought to be adults and of North African origin, fled on foot when they reached land, according to sources close to the police investigation.

Guardia Civil Arrest Two People Torrevieja and Recover 16 Stolen Bicycles Hospital on

By Spencer WIlliams

The Guardia Civil have arrested two Spanish men aged 31 and 36 in Torrevieja on suspicion of stealing at least 16 bicycles, including two competition models valued at about €6,500. After a reported robbery of a storage room in Torrevieja, Guardia Civil officers started the investigation which led them to two men with numerous convictions. Security cameras in the community of one of the storage rooms was the key to

identifying one of the suspects. They confessed that the bicycles were sold as soon as they were stolen to a Moroccan man who, once he had amassed a considerable number of bicycles, took them to Africa to be sold. It is not known how many bicycles might have been exported so far. Once the place where the stolen bicycles were stored had been located, it was possible to recover 16 of them, valued at more than €11,000. But the

margin the alleged thieves received was not much, as they sold two competition bikes worth about €6,500 for only €150. The two men arrested have been put at judicial disposition but the Moroccan receiver of the bicycles has managed to elude the officers and is a wanted man. So far only five of the bicycles have been returned to their owners so the help of the public is requested to identify the rest who have not yet been located.

Tim Healy Will Return to ‘Benidorm’ After Nearly Losing His Life

The 64-year-old actor - who portrays cross-dresser Lesley in the comedy sitcom - was forced to pull out of filming mid-way through series

nine earlier this year after he was struck down with a mystery illness that almost claimed his life.

But his co-stars Janine Duvitski and Tony Maudsley have confirmed he’s “on the mend” and will return for series 10.

Speaking at the TV Choice Awards in London on Monday (05.09.16) night, Tony - who plays hot pants-loving hairdresser Kenneth Du Beke in the show - explained: “He was in hospital in Spain but he’s on the mend now because we know he’s coming back for series 10. Series 10 has been confirmed, Tim’s been confirmed. So he’s definitely on the mend.” However, Janine - who portrays sex addict Jacqueline Stewart in the programme - has admitted Tim looks “so different” from how he was before he fell ill in April. She said: “I saw Tim because I’m rehearsing an episode of ‘Open

All Hours’. So I saw him last week and he’s lost a lot of weight, he was really poorly. He said it’s not a good way of losing a lot of weight but he’s back working now. He’s back at work anyway. He just looks different.” Meanwhile, Tim spent four weeks in a hospital in Spain under the watchful eye of doctors because he seemed to be at death’s door, but his condition made a dramatic improvement and he was deemed stable enough to be airlifted back to the UK to continue his treatment here.

Anything Goes “RIO CARNIVAL” Garden Party

By Spencer Williams

By David Rogers

Some 70 members attended the Garden Party in the lovely garden of our Secretary, Joan Flint and her “better half” Bill. A lot of hard work went into the event, much of it behind the scenes before the day. Joan works tirelessly to make these events a success and is backed up with a hard working committee - and their spouses too. There was also lots of help from non-committee members. As for the meal, there was a choice of starters - all pre-ordered and the main course was either fresh salmon, roast ham, or a variety of other cooked meats, with a huge array of salads and jacket potatoes. Deserts - well again lots of choice and all were delicious! A raffle was held as is

customary, then when it was dark the candles were all lit on every table and lighting was set up on a games track. “WE ARE TEAM GB” then followed. Two teams of ten played team games amid much laughter and challenges. The evening then dwindled away as people gradually wended their way home. Another great event. THANK YOU EVERYONE, especially Joan & Bill. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the auditorium in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. The next meeting will be held on Monday 26th September, starting promptly at 11.00 am please come early to sign in and get your seat!

If you have not heard of this Association and would like to join them, you can be assured of a very warm welcome. Please visit the website www.u3amarinabaixa. com to find out more information there is also a Facebook page. Alfas Fantasy Football League Report Just as the A.F.F.L. gets going we are interrupted with an International Break, well at least it wasn’t a meaningless friendly and I’m sure most fans would like to wish our new Manager Sam Allardyce well even though we were fortunate to snatch a last minute 1-0 win against 10 men Slovakia which set us on the road to Russia for the next World Cup. The break gives us a chance to look back at this Season’s Fantasy so far. There was a flurry of Transfers last week as most teams tried to improve their Squads before the Transfer window closed. With exception of Joe Hart who was selected by 22 Fantasy League Managers most of the top Players remained in the Premier League. Don’t forget if you have a Player who has moved clubs like West Ham’s Enner Valencia who has gone to Everton it doesn’t effect points gained so far in the Fantasy because he has stayed in the Premier League. At the moment Mike’s Super Saints are setting the pace at the top of the Fantasy with a 4 point advantage over Steven’s team TESD Town Ants.Dave’s Casa Stretford are in 3rd place just behind the Leaders.

George’s team Oh ! South London have got off to a good start in our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League and lead Jack’s Blackcats by 5 points. We have a record number of teams in our Junior League this Season with 31 Young Managers taking part. Pauline’s Vodka Army have marched to the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section and they have also won our 1st 20 euro voucher which is sponsored by Quick Save the only British Supermarket in Albir. In our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League Kevin’s team One For the Road have the biggest advantage in all the Leagues with an 8 point lead over Reece’s Wether 2 Winners. So far Kevin’s team has got 3 defenders who have all scored in the opening games.Dann,Van Aaholt and Collins have collected 10 points for each goal. A quick breakdown of the most popular Players chosen are as follows.Top goalkeeper is Manchester United’s David de Gea with 68 picks,2nd is Arsenal’s Peta Cech with 46. Last Season only 1 Manager selected United’s top keeper mainly because everybody was thinking he was going to Real Madrid.

Manchester City’s John Stones is the most selected Defender with 98 Fantasy Managers hoping he will fulfill his potential under Pep Guardiola,Spur’s Kyle Walker is next most chosen with 48. Top Defender so far is West Brom’s Mc Auley with 17 points amassed already. Only 3 managers have selected Tony Pullis’s tough tackling defender. After having a brilliant Season last year it is no surprise that West Ham’s Payet is the most selected mid-fielder with 63 picks 2 infront of Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne. Arsenal’s Sanchez & Chelsea’s Hazard are both top scorers so far with 15 points apiece. The most selected Player in this Season’s Fantasy is Manchester City’s top striker Sergio Aguero with no fewer than 136 selections,in 2nd place Manchester United’s Ibrahimovic with 88. Both Players have started well with United’s Striker having 21 points to his name while City’s Sergio has scored

19.A pity he will miss his next 3 games. Upset ! Overall the Fantasy League has got off to a bright start with 72 goals being scored in the 30 matches played in the Premier League. We have had 2 players sent off and 119 yellow cards which is rather a lot, almost 4 cards a game.On the bright side the Referees have been quite generous in awarding 13 penalties of which 4 were missed. Well that’s just a summary of the Fantasy League so far. Lets hope all our Players come back from the Internationals fit and well and ready to play for their Clubs.

Rashford GIves Big Sam Some Food For Thought

Hat-trick hero Marcus Rashford hopes he has sent a message to Sam Allardyce and Jose Mourinho after his glittering England Under-21 debut. The Manchester United striker scored three in front of senior boss Allardyce to help the Young Lions to a 6-1 rout of Norway in an U21 Euro qualifier. “It means a lot (that

Allardyce was here). It’s the England seniors, there is a new manager and they are doing well,” he said. Rashford will now head into the Manchester derby on Saturday on a high and he wants to use his performance as a reminder to United boss Mourinho. “That’s all you want to do as a

young player, give your manager a decision about whether to play you. I’m just looking forward to it,” he added. Meanwhile, former England captain Peter Shilton believes Wayne Rooney should have retired from national team duty after the Euro 2016 exit to Iceland. Retired goalkeeper Shilton, w h o s e E n g l a n d record of 125 caps is likely to be broken by Rooney, said: “I don’t think he’s a striker any more. “He should

have retired after the Euros. It’s not because he could break my

record. If he does and he plays well, fine.”

F1 Bought by Liberty Media

US firm Liberty Media has bought Formula 1 in a £6bn deal, bosses have confirmed. CVC Capital Partners is handing over its ownership after taking a controlling stake in 2005. Liberty is backed by John Malone, the American media tycoon. Sources have previously said the takeover will see the sport gain a public stock listing for the first time through a tracking stock called Liberty Media Group. A takeover will yield a windfall of more than $400m (£300m) for veteran F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, who owns a 5.3 per cent stake. The 85-year-old will remain in his role it has been confirmed - at least for a transitional period

of a few years. In a statement, he said: “I would like to welcome Liberty Media and Chase Carey to Formula One and I look forward to working with them.” A frenetic period for the ownership and management of F1 will also involve Chase Carey, a former DirecTV and News Corporation executive.

MVG Withdraws From Open

Michael van Gerwen has been forced to withdraw from the International Darts Open due to medical reasons. The world No 1 claimed the Perth Masters title last weekend, but the topseeded Dutchman has been denied the chance to pursue more silverware in Germany. Van Gerwen’s scheduled second round opponent, either Ryan Meikle or Michael Rasztovits, will receive a bye through to the third round. Peter Wright, Kim Huybrechts and Dave Chisnall are other top-four seeded players in the draw, which also includes reigning champion Michael Smith. Kevin Painter has been pitted against Devon Petersen

in the pick of the first round matches, while former European Tour finalist Jamie Caven meets Andy Boulton. And Jeffrey de Graaf comes up against Joe Cullen in a battle of two exciting talents.

Rob Howley has been appointed Wales head coach while Warren Gatland undertakes his role with the British and Irish Lions for the next 10 months. Howley, who has been Wales assistant coach under Gatland, will take “full responsibility” for the senior team with immediate effect, according to the Welsh Rugby Union. During the 2012-13 season, Howley also took charge of Wales while Gatland was heading up the Lions tour of Australia. ”We are delighted to appoint Rob as Head Coach of Wales for the period that Warren is away. Rob is a very

experienced international coach and forms part of one of the most experienced coaching teams in the international game,” said Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Martyn Phillips.

Tiger Woods Targets October Tournament for return

On Tuesday Tiger Woods attended his daughter Sam’s third-grade class at Limestone Creek Elementary School in Jupiter, Fla., for Career Day. He apparently did not tell the class he was a retired golfer. The 14-time major champion announced on his website Wednesday that he is targeting a comeback this year. Woods, who hasn’t played a competitive round on the PGA Tour since August 2015 when he finished in a tie for 10th in the Wyndham Championship, hopes to play in the Safeway Open, Oct. 13-16, at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. The tournament marks the opening of the

2016-17 PGA Tour season. Woods, who had two surgeries to his back in the fall of 2015, also said he intends to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open, Nov. 3-6, in Antalya, Turkey, and the Hero World Challenge, Dec. 1-4, at Albany in the Bahamas, a tournament that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. “My rehabilitation is to the point where I’m comfortable making plans, but I still have work to do,” said Woods, whose last of 79 Tour titles came in the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. The man who has been world No. 1 for more weeks than anyone has fallen to 711th in the world rankings due to his inactivity.

Murray Crashes Out Of US Open

dy Murray is out of the US Open, suffering an upset in the quarterfinals against Kei Nishikori. Murray, the second seed, went into Wednesday’s quarterfinal match with Nishikori, the sixth seed, owning a 7-1 record against him. The last time Nishikori won was in the ATP World Tour Finals back in 2014, but he pushed the Brit to five sets on Wednesday and ultimately will be advancing to the semifinals. The match lasted just under four hours and went for five sets, with both Murray and Nishikori taking dominant wins in specific sets. Murray took the first one at 6-1, Nishikori the second at 6-4, Murray the third at 6-4 and Nishikori the fourth at 6-1. The fifth and final set saw Nishikori score an early break, but Murray himself managed a break to tie things up. Tied at 5-5 with Murray serving, Nishikori scored another break and

was suddenly serving for the match. Ultimately, he won that game and won the match, 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Nishikori has historically played his best tennis at the US Open, advancing to the finals in 2014, further than he’s gone in any of the other Grand Slam events. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open earlier this year, but this semifinal spot will be his best showing of 2016 yet. Murray was fresh off winning his second Olympic gold medal after besting Del Potro in the finals at Rio. He was considered the top competition for Novak Djokovic, the top seed, but now he’ll be watching the rest of the tournament like the rest of us on the sidelines. One half of the men’s semifinals was already set on Tuesday, as Djokovic will be facing Gael Monfils, the 10th seed in the tournament.

THE PEOPLES GAMES

With the great success of the Rio Olympics everyone is again rallying for their country to do their very best in the Paralympics. Dubbed by many as the peoples games, as it gives not just those with disablilities but everyone a sense of belonging and that anyone can achieve their dreams if they put their mind to it. The Paralympic games have increased in popularity over the years with Lonjdon being the best example

with huge ticket sales as well as a successful haul of medals for Team GB. This time in RIo it hasn’t been totally smooth sailing with low ticket sales initially (over over the last two weeks they have climbed) but the biggest controversy being that Russian athletes have been banned completly from the games, compare to the olympics which only individual sports were penalised. We’ll be watching, will you? Best luck to Team GB!
