“Most Wanted Brits Operation Off to a Good Start Listen Online See Our Advert Page 6

by Spencer WIlliams

TWO of the ten British fugitives on the Operation Captura list have been apprehended just a week into the start of the campaign. The first to be brought in was suspected paedophile Matthew Sammon who was hiding out in Fuengirola. The police have now also captured Mohammed Alam who had been found guilty of rape in 2010 before going on the run. He was tracked down to Playa de las Americas resort in Tenerife and could be back in jail in the UK by next month. The annual operation is organised by Crimestoppers and focuses on

fugitives believed to be in Spain, with eight of the original ten still at large. Many come to Spain thinking they will blend in with the existing ex-pat population. However it is these ex-pats that Operation Captura is banking on

to be instrumental in tracking down the targets - something that has been borne out strongly again this year. Spain, unlike many other countries around the world, also has a full extradition treaty with the UK.

Russian Warship Proceeds Without Spanish Help By Simon Russell

SPAIN found itself at the centre of an international incident this week although they appear to have deflected the worse of the flak at the last minute. The incident revolved around the Russian warship the “Admiral Kuznetsov” which was on it’s way to help the controversial Russian involvement in the conflict in Syria. After requesting to refuel in the Spanish

enclave of Ceuta it initially appeared that the Spanish would comply with their request. However, as a member of NATO, which has made clear it’s objection to the Russian involvement in Syria, they appeared out of step with their allies. After a few days of discussions the Russians withdrew their refuelling request and, rather unusually, made a statement confirming this.

Strikes Set to Hit Valencia Airport Feeding Those Most in Need

By Simon Russell

STAFF responsible for the refuelling of planes at Valencia’s Manises airport have announced strike action until at least the end of February. The strikes are partial but will inevitably have an impact on various services at the airport. The dispute revolves around what the unions refer to as the “abusive” minimum wages paid by their employers, a specialist company owned by Spanish oil giants Repsol and Anglo-Dutch firm BP.

The strikes are due to be on eight dates each month from November to February, starting on November 4. The airport

does not envisage major disruptions as a fuelling service will still be available, albeit heavily reduced.

Youth “Confesses” to Pedestrian Access Improved Murder of Young Girl By Simon Russell

By Simon Russell

In a tragic story that has moved very quickly, a friend of murdered schoolgirl Vanessa Ferrer Ciges, (age 15) who went missing on the 26 October, has confessed to police that he was her killer. The body of a naked female was found on October 28 at the bottom of a shallow ravine outside Chella, a small Valencian town inland from Gandia. The body was naked and wrapped in a blanket and soon confirmed as that of Vanessa. Witnesses who had seen a car in the area reported this to police which led them to the

door of Ruben M, aged 20, a local youth who was part of Vanessa’s circle of friends but had no other connection to her. Apparently he broke down and confessed to the killing while

in police custody, saying he had taken drugs and had little recall of the incident. Police will continue to interview the man and formal charges are expected to be made soon.

RECOGNIZING that even when parking centrally a degree of walking is still required Finestrat council have begun improving the pedestrian access to the municipal parking lot at Plaza de Unio Europa. The work will be carried out by the towns own services team and will consist of replacing windows, building

a wall for the entry area and the placement of an iron railing above the wall. As well as improving safety and ease of access the works will make the building more attractive by, for example, using decorative bricks for the wall as opposed to the plain breeze blocks associated with public parking lots.

Man Drowns in Flash Flood

By Simon Russell

IN a tragic reminder of how severe Spanish rain can be when it does happen, a 65 year old man was swept away in his car on Sunday October 23 at Dos Hermanas near Seville. It appeared the man tried to drive through what is normally a dry riverbed but the torrential rain had transformed into a “raging torrent”

according to witnesses. After being reported missing the man’s body had been found outside his car by local fire-fighters. The normally placid Andalucian region had seen severe rain all weekend with the emergency services being called out to over 500 incidents on Saturday alone, with Dos Hermanas being one of the towns at the epicentre.

Brutal Attack on Man for His Mobile Phone

By Simon Russell

NATIONAL Police have arrested a man and woman in Valencia who stabbed a stranger in the stomach and stole his wallet and mobile phone. Luckily for the man a police car was nearby, and although they did not witness the attack, they were able to immediately call an ambulance as they could see the man was bleeding profusely. When the man was well enough

to speak to the police he explained how a woman had engaged him in conversation when he was surprised by a man at which stage the woman grabbed his arm and also bit his ear. After a struggle the man was stabbed and the thieves ran off. However they were able to identify what they believed to be the couple in question , who were already well known to them, and they have now both been arrested and charged.

Man Convicted for Verbal Assault on his Daughter

By Simon Russell

THE Valencian courts heard how a man insulted his daughter, a minor, at her own birthday party calling her fat, lazy and stupid and also commenting on her cellulite. The daughter was so distressed by the taunts, made in front of friends and family, that she made an accusation of libel which the court have now upheld in her favour. They saw it as a deliberate attempt to belittle and upset the child publicly without reason and sentenced the man to 20 days community service.

The girls parents were going through divorce proceedings at the time of the incident and family relations had been described as “tense.

Noxious Smoke Sparks Major Operation

By Simon Russell

A massive plume of smoke, caused by a fire in a plastics factory at Benimuslem south of Valencia city, caused huge problems in the town and surrounding areas. Unsure if the smoke was toxic many people were advised to remain in their houses and keep doors and windows etc shut. The local school was closed as well as facilities such as sports centres. The fire started at around 6am on 25 October and fire-fighters worked throughout the day to bring the

problem under control. Emergency services were brought in from nearby Alzira and Torrent as well as specialist equipment not available in the small town.

Fishy Problem Presented By Newcomers Christmas Bonus

By David Rogers

THE Albufera natural wetlands park in Valencia has been increasingly inundated with blue crabs, a non-native species originally from North America. They are extremely adaptable and have found the marshes and lakes of the area to their liking. The crustaceans are having a particular negative impact on the eel fishing in the El Palmar area, an ancient and traditional form of fishing using environmentally

friendly eel net pots. Once the eels are caught this subsequently attracts the blue crabs who then feed on the trapped eels and often also damage the nets. The numbers of the crabs are now so large that it is believed eradication would be impossible and control is the only realistic way forward. Unlike many

invasive species the blue crabs are quite valuable to fishermen, fetching around 14â‚Ź a kilo, and it is hoped

Unlike the summer market, where many jobs are taken by students who intend to return to studying after the summer break, the Christmas roles are often sought by people hoping for a more permanent role. The typical new recruit would be a young professional preferably, though not necessarily, with some work experience.

Valenciano Man Attacked in UK “for Speaking Spanish”

By Simon Russell

THE trial has concluded of Daniel Way who attacked Valencian resident Tomas Gil in Bournemouth in May this year. Mr Gil was speaking to his companion in their native language when Way, who did not know the couple, told him to “speak f****** English”

before attacking him with a plank he loosened from a building. Way was fined £800 payable to Mr Gil but controversially only received a one year suspended sentence for the attack as he agreed to attend a series of rehabilitation courses. Mr

Gil received serious facial injuries in the attack and also had to be treated for shock at the scene. The incident has been widely covered in the UK press with many seeing it as an illustration of the nasty side of post Brexit Britain and it’s attitude to foreigners.

Noisy Dog Gets Man Killed

By Simon Russell

THE trial has begun in Castellon of a man accused of killing his neighbour as his dog was disturbing him. The incident happened just over two years ago in Benicarlo in the north of the Valencian Community. The two men involved lived in the same block of flats and there had been a dispute for some days about the dogs noise. On 26 August the defendant

allegedly took matters into his own hands and shot his neighbour with a shotgun, killing him instantly after hitting the man in his left eye. The prosecutors are claiming there are no mitigating circumstances and they have requested a prison sentence of 20 years as well as a compensation figure totalling140,000€ for the victims wife and two children.

Mummified Corpse Found in Villa

By Simon Russell

THE body of a 52 year old woman who had not been seen for several months was discovered in a “mummified state” at the remote villa in Lliria (Valencian Province) where she had been living. The woman lived alone with several pets and her disappearance had not been reported. In fact the body only came to light this month because the villa was undergoing repossession proceedings and the Policia Local had entered the

dwelling after the eviction notices had received no response. A few weeks ago a neighbour had noticed two underfed dogs and had begun feeding them. They reported this matter to the Guardia Civil who called at the villa but left without gaining a response. The woman’s body was discovered in her bathroom along with several dead pets and an autopsy has pointed to death by natural causes, possibly as far back as April.

Region in Good Spirits

By Simon Russell

A study on global drinking habits has found that the residents of Valencia and Madrid are the highest spenders per capita on liqueurs and sprits in Spain. Valencian’s drink an average of 76 high alcohol drinks per person annually equating to a total spend of €683m across the community. The average Spaniard spends just under 130€ each year on such drinks, well behind the globes leading spenders the Irish at 270€ followed by the UK average of 220€.

However higher alcohol prices are a factor in this statistic and the highest consumers of spirits are, maybe surprisingly,

the Japanese at 202 glasses per person, well ahead of the Polish on 134.

Church Parents to Oppose School Sex Education Changes By Simon Russell

THE Catholic Parents Federation of Valencia has expressed it’s opposition to the new Valencian laws which aim to promote equal teaching of all lifestyles in it’s schools. This would include gay, transsexual and bisexual lifestyles, including family units, which the Federation are particularly unhappy with. The traditionalist Archbishop of Valencia, Antonio Canizares, has previously urged his followers to reject all such lifestyle choices as “insidious

and destructive” which attracted a barrage of criticism from many quarters. Though the Archbishop is staying out of this debate in public he remains close to the leadership of the parents group and many believe he is behind the latest protests. Catholic groups feel they have the right to set the agenda in Catholic schools - however these are almost all dependant on the

state as well as the church for funding and, as things stand, will need to follow the guidelines drawn up by the education authorities.

Beach Goers Beware Of Jellyfish

Jellyfish are beautiful fascinating creatures but sadly they can cause a lot of problems for bathers during the summer months. They have long thin tentacles covered with small poisonous sacs called nematocysts which, if they come in contact with the skin, produce a nasty sting. Large swarms of jellyfish have become increasingly common in the seas around Europe, such as the Mediterranean. The increase in their numbers is thought to be due to over fishing of their natural predators.

If you are stung by a jellyfish, you will experience -severe pain, itching, a rash, raised welts (raised, circular areas on the skin). Other symptoms may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, muscle spasms, numbness, ingling, and/or wollen lymph nodes (lymph nodes are small nodules that are found in several areas around the body, including in the groin and armpit). If available, soak in vinegar, isopropyl alcohol or failing that, sea water. Do NOT use clear water. Do NOT rub the area or apply hot water or ice. There are products available especially for jelly fish stings that you can take to the beach with you. Further medical assistance may also be required if the symptoms of a sting are very painful and severe. Always call an ambulance

Article Provided By See Our Advert Page 39

if the patient has:

-problems breathing, or swallowing, -chest pain, -severe pain at the site of the sting, -been stung on a large area of the body, the face, the genitals, or severe pain, itching, or if there is swelling around the sting. Also, if the patient is very young, or very old, The Portuguese man-of-war is a large, poisonous, jellyfish-like creature, but it is not actually a jellyfish. As the treatments for the two species are different, it is important not to confuse them. The Portuguese man-of-war has a large, gasfilled bladder that is a purple-blue colour. It floats above the surface of the water and, like a jellyfish, has long, thin tentacles that hang below the water. The sting of Portuguese man-of-war can be very painful. If you come across one that has been washed up on the shore, you should NOT touch it because its can still sting you. If you, or your child, have been stung, you should seek the assistance of someone who has been trained in first aid, such as a lifeguard. If you are stung by a Portuguese man-of-war, you may have the following symptoms: - a red line with small, white lesions, and, in severe cases, - blisters and welts (raised areas) may develop. If you are stung in the eye, it is likely that you will have: - eye pain, -inflammation (swelling), -watering eye, -blurred vision, and/or -increased sensitivity to light. If stung by a Portuguese man-of-war, you should seek medical attention if: - the pain is severe and lasts for more than an hour, - the rash gets worse, and/or - there are signs of infection - such as increased redness and swelling in the affected area, and/or a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or more.

How Can I Tell if My Dog Has Worms? Dogs usually aren’t too worried about consequences. They love to eat things they shouldn’t, roll around in things they shouldn’t, and in general, act like a dog. Unfortunately, many of these things can bring on unwanted visitors like worms into your dog’s world. Fortunately, if you detect worms early it keeps them from getting worse, thereby making the problem as easy as possible on your dog. Symptoms for dogs that may have worms: * Coat no longer shiny * Not hungry * Can’t get enough to drink * You see worms or eggs in your dog’s feces This is the most common way to confirm worms. Remember though, not all kinds of worms are visible to the naked eye. * Visible worms in the area around dog’s rear Tapeworms can appear as small moving segments, and later dry out to look like grains of rice. * Rubbing the rear on the ground or against furniture - if your dog has an itch in its rear, it may be from worms in the area. However, this could also be from gland issues not related to worms. * Vomiting, possibly even with visible worms. * Bloated stomach or belly - This can often occur in puppies who receive worms from their mother. * Weakness, constant hunger, weight loss - Worms

can steal the nutrition your dog should be getting from it’s food. This can cause your dog to be weak or constantly hungry, and in some cases, may be losing weight. * Diarrhea, especially if it contains blood. Symptoms for dogs [http://www.symptomsfordogs. com] that have worms can usually be treated, should be addressed right away for best results.

How a dog gets worms: Heartworms can be transmitted from mosquito bites. Tapeworm infection can be caused by swallowing infected fleas. Hookworm infection can be caused by swallowing the hookworm eggs or larvae. This can also affect the fetus inside the womb of an infected mother. Drinking water with hookworm larvae in it may also result in hookworm infection. Roundworms can also infect a puppy fetus while inside the womb. Ingesting infected animals can also infect your dog with round worms. Whipworms infection occurs due to drinking contaminated water or eating something contaminated.

To prevent worm symptoms for dogs: -Get puppies tested early. As soon as three weeks after birth. They may already be infested and will need to be treated right away. -Get your dog a yearly exam and have a stool specimen checked. Several products exists that protect against roundworms and heartworms. -Keep fleas away. Fleas can transmit tapeworm if your dog swallows them. -Keep your dog away from wildlife, where parasites abound. Dog parks that are not well maintained are a common source of parasites. -Prevent your dog from eating dead animals, such as those of birds, rabbits and rodents. Carcasses can carry worms. -Prevent your dog from eating feces. Yes, this should be obvious, but it is the most common way a dog gets intestinal parasites. If symptoms in your dog indicate worms, take him/her to the vet to diagnose the condition. Provide your dog with proper treatment to avoid any complications.

Benidorm Fiestas PEOPLE may be surprised to find that Benidorm’s local Fiesta’s have their roots nearly 280 years ago, with the ancient celebrations of the town’s patron saints San Jaime and the Virgen del Sufragio. For many the highlight of the festival is the day when the British take over and the fancy dress costumes come out. Others will look forward to the colourful street displays and bands, for the children it will probably be one of the several events

aimed at them. Whatever your own highlight, the fiesta has something for everyone and shouldn’t be missed. At the time of going to print the full schedule had not yet been confirmed. However based on previous years you can expect the programme to look something like this running from Friday 11 November to Thursday 17 November. Day 1 at 6pm there is the Lighting of the Illumination at Avenida Martinez Alejos and

the inauguration of the fairground. 10pm see’s the start of the Benidorm Music Festival Day 2 starts with traditional Mass at Iglesia San Jaime at 10am. 12pm see’s the firework display at Plaza Castelar with the “Mascelta” at 2pm. Expect various events thorough what is the first “proper” day of the fiesta. Day 3 sees the opening of the Kids Park at Plaza Reyes de Espana and later on expect theatre for the little ones. More

music can be expected in the evening, Day 4, 5 and 6 many of the previous days events will be repeated at the same venue and time daily from here on. There will always be new additions and events springing up around the town, just check the full schedule. Day 7 Official last day of the fiestas and the different fiesta

committees will be parading around the town. At around 5.30pm expect to see the final parade of floats and spectacular fireworks display. Day 8 is many peoples highlight, the fancy dress party, starting at midday and covering the Old Town and the Calle Gerona/British Square areas of the New Town.

Sleep Well? Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood or banishing under-eye circles. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. Leos Softfurnishings superstore has tried & tested countless mattresses to bring their customers a perfect choice of beds and mattresses. All in the name of a better nights sleep for the right price. next is a help guide to briefly point everyone in the right direction. If you toss and turn at night, your mattress needs are likely not being met. The goal for your new mattress is to find a bed that allows you to lie still for a peaceful night’s sleep on your side or back or on your stomach. What position do you prefer to sleep in?

Side or back Side and back sleepers tend to want a softer sleeping surface. This allows for their shoulders and hips to receive extra cushioning and will help avoid painful pressure points in those areas. Stomach sleepers often desire a slightly firmer sleeping surface so that they can keep their spine in proper alignment and prevent their back from bowing in too much. We look at the pros and cons of the main types of mattresses to help you find the best. Price isn’t everything, though, as what is most important is what you as an individual find comfortable. They also tend not to be as warm as memory foam mattresses, which could be an important consideration if you tend to find yourself too warm at night. Memory foam mattresses, are topped with a layer of temperature-sensitive viscoelastic material (memory foam). Homes Sales Up in Spain but There are Signs of a Brexit Effect Homes sales in Spain are rising again after a summer lull but figures are distorted for a number of reasons, including a potential Brexit effect, according to real estate experts. Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that sales increased in August by 20% compared to a year ago but such a rise was expected because the inscription of many previous sales was delayed in July due to a Supreme Court ruling. The legal ruling on clauses in mortgage contracts meant that property registrars suspended the inscription of sales tied to mortgages affected by the ruling and this has distorted the figures. Resales were up 25%, and new home sales were up by 3%, led by the Balearics where transactions were up 36% in the year to August, and up by 26% in Almeria and 25% in Barcelona. There are signs that the British

decision to leave the European Union may have had an impact on sales to foreign buyers. For example, the growth in the Balearics is being driven by demand from German buyers. In locations like Malaga on the Costa del Sol, Alicante on the Costa Blanca and Murcia which are popular with British buyers sales are still growing, but significantly less than other regions that attract foreign buyers. This could be due to a lower British demand due to the impact of Brexit on British budgets and confidence. Meanwhile, the latest figures from the Association of Spanish Notaries also show that sales increased in August, up 17.4% year on year. But Mark Stucklin of Spanish Property Insight pointed out that the Spanish housing market is still just half the size it was in July 2007 but has recovered from a low of 30% at the end of 2012. He also pointed out that the nota-

ries do not break down their monthly sales figures by region, making it difficult to tell if Brexit is having an effect on the market in the four or five provinces where British demand is concentrated. ‘However, the latest home sales figures from the INE, based on sales inscribed in the land registry in Au-

gust and witnessed by notaries in the preceding months do break down sales by province, and show that growth has been far below the national average in provinces where the British have historically been big buyers. That’s the Brexit effect for you,’ said Stucklin.

Spanish Property Market Recovery Still Continues

The latest detailed statistics regarding residential property sales in Spain which were published on Monday by the country’s notaries show that the market upturn continued in the second quarter of the year, in terms of Notaries confirm continued Spanish property market recoveryboth the number of sales completed and the average market price. More specifically, the notaries report that in the country as a whole the number of sales was 13.3% higher than in the second quarter of 2015 at 122,776, while the average price paid per square metre rose by 1.3% to 1,314 euros. However, as has become customary in the field of Spanish property market statistics, both of these national averages hide considerable variation among the seventeen regions of Spain. In terms of sales volume the picture is at least more or less uniform, with increases being reported in almost all of the regions. The only exceptions are the northern Autonomous Communities of La Rioja (-2.7%) and Navarra (-20.4%), while the year-onyear increases are most significant in the Balearic Islands (27.8%), Catalunya (25%) and Extremadura (21.7%). This increased activity in the

Balearics mirrors the findings of numerous other statistical surveys so far this year, and in general terms the market recovery is strongest here and in the regions of Madrid and Catalunya. The situation regarding price movements, though, is less clear. The regional map shows that almost all of the areas in which the market value of real estate has risen over the last year are in the eastern half of the country, the exception being the Canary Islands, while in the west of mainland Spain the trend is universally downward. Thus, the most significant increases are those reported in the Canaries (7.7%) and Madrid (4.9%), with other significant upward movements having been observed in the Mediterranean coastal regions of Murcia (2.5%), Catalunya (2.7%) and the Balearics (3.3%). On the other side of the coin, though are decreases of up to 34% in

La Rioja and 20.1% in Navarra: the accompanying image shows graphically how the west of the country appears still to be in decline in this respect. Unsurprisingly, the data regarding mortgages reflect the sales and price figures. The total in the second quarter of this year was 26% higher than in 2015 at 56,815 loans to finance purchases, while the average loan capital was 3.5% higher at 130,254 euros. In overall terms, the notaries’ data, which are “real-time” in the sense that they are compiled at the moment a sale is completed rather than when

it is inscribed, often months later, in the property registry office, illustrate that the Spanish property market recovery is gradually becoming more and more consolidated. Sales figures have now risen in all of the last nine quarters, and price increases have been observed in the last five. However, the data also illustrate once again that the recovery does not extend to all regions of the country by any means, and that while the upturn appears to be spreading into more areas of eastern Spain, the situation in the west is still relatively precarious.

Spain’s Largest Leisure and Outlet Centre Will Open Next March The largest shopping and leisure centre in Spain, which is still in the process of being built, is set to open early next year. Sambil Outlet is located in Leganés, a satellite city situated just 11km southwest of Spain’s capital, Madrid. The centre will be inaugurated at the end of March 2017, after an investment of 55 million euro and four years of construction work. The centre, which will have a surface area of 42,000 square metres, is being housed in the old M-40 commercial centre, which after being closed for several years was acquired by the Venezuelan commercial group Sambil at the end of 2012.

One of the many attractions includes the largest wind tunnel in Europe, with different velocity levels to suit all ages and abilities. (For more info, visit: http://sambiloutlet. e s /e s / t u n e l - d e viento.php.) Approximately 1,000 people will work in the new shopping centre, and the project will also generate a further 1,500 indirect jobs. Some of the brands visitors will find within the 177 different stores include Mango, Fifty Factory, Mustang, Shana, Burger King, Lizarrán, Vodafone and Ocean Multicines. This is the first project that the South American group has undertaken in this country, but bosses say that it won’t be the only one.

“This is just the starting point of our business adventure in Spain. Economically, it wouldn’t make sense to just have one shopping centre in Spain, seeing that our head office is more than 7,000km away,” said Arnold Moreno, head of Sambil España.

The group is already planning where their second commercial centre will be located, and are considering other major cities including Barcelona, Valencia, Seville or Bilbao. They are opting to focus more on the outlet/discount type of commercial centre, as they believe that since the economic crisis people are more careful when it comes to spending money and love to go home with a bargain. BREXIT UPDATES

British Consul to advise on Brexit Update, While Town Officially Pledges Support for Resident Brits THERE will be a seminar at Teulada Town Hall on Thursday 3 November at 10am entitled Dealing with the Practical Consequences of the UK’s Exit from the EU. This will be attended by Sarah-Jane Morris, the British Consul, who will update those present on what the consulate knows at this stage. Healthcare will be a particular focus and a lawyer will also be discussing the legal consequences of Brexit.

In further Brexit news, Javea Town Hall held a meeting on October 27 expressing their strong support for the over 5,000 UK residents who have made their home in Javea. They have stressed the importance of this section of the population to the town and have pledged their support and will do whatever the town can to help protect their rights as the Brexit process moves forward.

Theresa May Concedes Need For Brexit Commons Debate

The number of children and young people in the UK seeking help for anxiety has risen dramatically, with many citing concerns about world affairs as the cause. According to the UK’s leading children’s charity NSPCC, there has been a 35 percent increase in anxiety in the past year and children as young as eight have contacted the charity to discuss their fears and worries. During the past six months, the NSPCC’s Childline helpline has received approximately 6,500 calls — which equates to 36 per day — in which anxiety was named as the main problem. The charity revealed that children and young people have said that world

affairs such as the EU referendum, the US presidential election and troubles in the Middle East are reasons for their anxiety. “Things I see on the news are worrying me; things like the EU referendum and the US election, it makes me worry about my future and how things are going to change,” one teenage girl told counsellors. “My anxiety is becoming worse after the terrorist attacks in Paris. I’m really worried something like that could happen in London too,” one girl (age unknown) said. In response to the growing number of children and young people concerned about political issues, the charity creat-

ed a microsite on its Childline website in September, which has received almost 5,000 visits. The site addresses concerns pertaining to extremism, terrorism and radicalisation; attacks and bombings; in addition to bullying and mistreatment. “Seeing pictures of crying and bewildered toddlers being pulled from bomb-damaged homes upsets all of us, Dame Esther Rantzen — president of Childline — said in a statement emailed to Mashable. “At Childline we know children and young people are sometimes frightened and dis-

tressed by events in the wider world,” Rantzen continued.

Valencian Growth Curtailed by Brexit

It’s not only the UK that is predicted to be hit economically by the Brexit decision. The move to leave the EU is likely to have an impact upon all those countries who currently trade with them. This can already be seen in the Valencian community. A recent BBVA research report has identified the slowing down of growth in the region and has linked this, at least partially, to Brexit. The predictions were announced by the head of Macroeconomic Analysis BBVA Research, Rafael Doménech during the presentation of the report Situación Comunitat. It’s not just Valencia’s reliance on the tourist industry or holiday home purchase either. The Valencian community currently exports more vehicles to the UK than the other communities in Spain.

Some good news

The gloomy news about Brexit was however, softened by other more positive news about overall growth in the region and an increase in employment. Tourist figures are up, the price of oil is down and exports from the region have been growing with an increase of 14.5% between January and July this year. Doménech reported that the Valencian economy will still register with a growth of 3.3% at the end of 2016. This figure is projected to be lower than in 2015 when the rise was 3.6%. Projected figures for the end of 2017 are that there will be only 2.2% of GDP growth towards the end of 2017.

These faltering increases have been trickling down to unemployment figures too. Between 2015 and 2016 the region has created 105,000 new jobs with subsequent benefits to domestic income and spending.

Political climate

The report acknowledges that Brexit isn’t the only reason for the decline in growth and that there are other factors that are influencing it too. Contributing to the downward trend is that of the current instability in the political situation. With Spain still facing the possibility of a third general election, there are concerns that this is also impacting on GDP. However, Brexit is believed to be a major trigger and the report concludes that Brexit will reduce GDP growth in the region by five tenths in 2017; higher than the Spanish average figure. The slow down in the British economy and the depreciation of the pound are expected to reduce the attractiveness of Valencian goods and services, including tourism. Currently the UK receives about one-tenth of what Valencia exports and 20% of overnight stays in the region in 2015 were by British tourists. Doménech’s speech continued by emphasising that what’s needed now is a smoother administrative framework to ensure continued growth. This requires a ‘fourth industrial revolution’ in the form of digital technology advances.

MINI Convertible 2016

The MINI Convertible is actually a unique car. Why? Well it has a fully-retractable roof and a pair of rear seats. The competition either have glorified, large sunroofs or, in the case of the Mazda MX-5, two fewer seats. Sadly, the MINI Convertible isn’t without its flaws, but that doesn’t stop it being charming and likeable. The fabric roof can be put up or down at up to 20mph and takes a 18 seconds, so it’s possible to raise it at a set of traffic lights if you get caught in the rain. With the roof down there’s

a bit of bluster, but that’s all part of the experience - as is the fun handling, which is typical of all MINIs. There are four engine options – Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper D and John Cooper Works. For most buyers the Cooper and Cooper D models will work perfectly fine, delivering punchy performance and affordable running costs. The Cooper S and JCW models are much more potent, with popping, burbling exhausts and quick acceleration.

Through corners the MINI Convertible is precise and nimble, with quick, well-weighted steering. That said, you can tell it’s less rigid than the hatchback – the body flexes a little over lumps and bumps. That is especially obvious with the roof up, since there are lots of creaks and rattles on rough roads or when tackling bends. That’s a problem that doesn’t blight the excellent Mazda MX-5, which is more fun. But the Mazda has two fewer seats than the MINI. Those seats may be small, but for younger children they’re fine. They’re nicely trimmed, too – like the rest of the cabin, which feels upmarket and is packed with fun touches, like a toggle

switch engine starter. Boot space is sufficient for the average weekly shop or a trip away. The tailgate drops down and can be used as a picnic table when out and about, while part of the fabric roof can be lifted up to provide better access for loading and unloading. The seats fold, too – so fairly bulky items can be loaded without too much difficulty. If you want real fun then a Mazda MX-5 or Fiat 124 is a better choice of soft top, but the MINI Convertible is a more practical choice that’s still enjoyable. It’s a true convertible, too, unlike the Fiat 500C and the DS 3 Cabriolet, plus there are dozens of customisation options and details to make it your own.

This Week In Automotive History

Ferruccio Lamborghini set out to build road cars that could compete As the story goes Ferruccio Lamborghini had built a small fortune selling tractors and other types of appliances, allowing him access to some of the finer things in life, such as a new Ferrari. However, his Ferrari did not please him and after being unable to be heard by a Mr. Enzo Ferrari himself, Lamborghini decided he would build his own sports car. And so he did. This led to the official incorporation of Automobili Ferruc-

cio Lamborghini S.p.A. on this day in 1963, the same day that it debuted its first ever car at the Turin Motor Show, the 350 GTV. While Ferrari built racecars and adapted the drivetrain to road going bodies, Lamborghini wanted to build road going cars that could compete on the racetrack. Lamborghini had hired several ex-Ferrari engineers to build him an engine for his GT, but when they produced an en-

gine similar to Ferrari’s method of production he was displeased and refused to pay. This is perhaps why the engine bay of the 350 GTV on display at Turin was filled with bricks, instead of an engine! The 350 GTV body was not as well received for its looks as hoped anyhow, and a

redesign was necessitated. The redesigned body was shown at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show, featuring a 280 hp v12 engine designed by Giotto Bizzarrini. Positive press led to production beginning shortly thereafter, with the car named the 350GT. By the end of the year 13 car’s had been built, each sold at a loss in order to keep prices competitive with Ferrari. In total, over three model years, 120 350GTs were built.

By Javeamigos

Councillor Doris Courcelles (Foreign Residents Relations) attended the General Meeting of the Asociación de Vecinos del Montgó. She outlined forthcoming municipal projects and confirmed that the burning of garden waste on private property is prohibited, except for farmers who have applied for specific permission. The councillor explained to the residents about the future projects of the municipal swimming pool and auditorium, the construction of which she assured would start next year. She also explained about the proposal to re-arrange traffic flow in Calle Génova and the surrounding streets as well as the international design competition for the new coastal walkway along the Muntanyar I between the port and the Arenal. The councillor also warned of the dangers posed by barbeques, even on private plots, adding that built-in barbeques sited away from green zones are preferable. Finally, the residents expressed additional concerns about certain anti-social behaviour such as the throwing of glass bottles and cigarette butts which may constitute a fire hazard and requested that specific signs be placed in the area to raise awareness of the danger that this practice poses to the environment.

Murdered With a Frying Pan By Simon Russell

THE trial by jury of a man accused of murdering his wife last year in Javea (Marina Alta) has now begun in Alicante’s Crown Court. The trial began with emotional scenes as the victim’s family yelled insults and accusations at the accused until the judge intervened. The prosecution

allege that after a row the defendant repeatedly hit his wife with a frying pan resulting in her death, with the attack taking place in front of the woman’s mother and children. The man, Mouine B of Moroccan descent, claims his wife fell and hit her head on a table. The jury is made up of seven women and two men.

Benitatxell has received a grant of 1,500€ from Alicante Council to create an ecologically friendly allotment. The individual plots will be located in the Abiar gardens and consist of 4,000 square meters broken down into 25 plots. The land was donated privately with a view to it being used for agricultural purposes, preferably ecologically friendly ones. They are also hoping to train residents in the art of organic gardening and are looking for people to take over the plots. Contact the Town Hall for more information if you may be interested.

VETERINARIANS helping with the investigation of the death of two bison last month have said that the animal’s died of starvation before losing their heads. The grisly deaths of the animals at the Valdeserrillas Reserve at Benageber near Valencia has led to the indictment of Carlos Alamo, one of the reserves management team. This recent finding has also led to the conclusion

that the reason for at least one of the animals losing their head was decomposition rather than decapitation. The Guardia Civil are investigating whether the animals were poisoned and the remaining dozen bison in the semidomesticated herd had all showed severe signs of malnutrition. The Valdeserrillas Reserve is a private concession on public land and operates as a commercial farm.

Cause of Fatal Collision Under Investigation

By Simon Russell

ONE person died and three sustained injuries when two vehicles were involved in a collision in the early hours of 24 October. The crash occurred on the N-340 between Benicassim and Oropesa in the north of the community. The crash was so severe fire-fighters had to separate the vehicles before releasing

the injured and confirming the fatality. It appears that the two vehicles collided head on but an investigation will be launched to try and determine the exact cause of the tragedy. No names of those involved or results of intoxication tests have been released at this stage, or the extent of the injuries.

One Arrest Leads Skaters Hoping to Get Things to Another Moving With Appeal

By Simon Russell

NATIONAL Police have arrested two men for stealing marijuana plants from a smallholding near Elche, which has then led them to arrest the farms owner and charge him with public health disorders. The two men were in a van which was stopped at a random road check where the police noticed the

strong smell of the drug. Upon inspection the back of the truck was found to contain a number of marijuana plants, totalling 50 kilos, as well as cutting equipment. Interviews with the men then led them to the unfortunate land owner. The alleged drug grower has been released pending charge while the other men have been detained in Elche.

A man attempting to travel from Alicante’s El Altet airport to Milan was intercepted with just over 1.6 kilos of cocaine in his possession shortly before he was due to board the flight. Special scanning equipment detected a discrepancy in a painting he had checked in that may have indicated a hidden compartment. The man and the painting were taken away and a thorough check made which revealed the drugs, estimated to have a street value of 100,000 Euros. The detainee, a 31 year old Spanish resident of Nigerian origin, has appeared in Elche crown court and is incarcerated awaiting trial.

Poor Planning Blamed For Hospital Delays

By Simon Russell

Ibex Insurance… closer to you!

DEPUTY PP chairman in the area, Jose Salas, has said that poor planning has led to delays in the ongoing works at Elche hospital. The delays have affected patients in crucial areas such as the oncology and neurological departments, based on the second floor where the repairs are being carried out. Many patients are being forced to go to other parts

of the complex for treatment which are not as well equipped for the specialist care. Another area effected is that of pneumology, which may well cause further problems as we get into the cold and flu season . Mr Salas alleges that the delays are caused by administrative issues rather than the work itself which is an unacceptable state of affairs.

Smart Beaches on the Agenda for Benidorm By Simon Russell

SMART Beaches does not just refer to smart in it’s more literal translation but also refers to smart beach management as well as the very 21st century issue of WIFI for all even on holiday. These are amongst the ideas and issues that were on the table at the XVIII International Tourist Forum of Benidorm held for two days last week. Local collaborators included the HOSBEC hotel association, representatives of the tourism department at Alicante’s University and the Valencian Tourist agency. Arguably Benidorm’s tourism department have gone back to basics by recognising that their greatest asset is, and always will be,

the town’s beaches although many other items were discussed. There were also attendees from other tourist hotspots such as Malaga and Mallorca in what is essentially an exchange of ideas and views as plans begin to take shape for the 2017 tourist season and beyond.

Along with the Alicante Fire Consortium there was the Spain Canine Rescue Unit, Penedes Garraf K9 Rescue and USAR13 health and rescue units and dog units from Madrid and Catalonia. The camp had been turned into a simulation of an earthquake site including collapsed buildings and landslides where volounteers were “trapped” and searched for by the units. The event went

over three days including one activity that went overnight to simulate night rescues. The event was organised by USAR13, a non profit organisation that

has helped in worldwide rescues in such areas as Haiti, Turkey, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. For more information see www.usar13.com

Child Protection Association Started Up

THE “Sweetie” organisation has been established in L’Alfaz del Pi with the objective of protecting children against all types of harm whether it be physical, mental or sexual abuse. The groups president, Enrique Ortola, wants to work as closely as possible with the Town Hall and has met with Alfaz Mayor Vicente Arques this week to discuss the best ways to collaborate. Getting the message out

to local schools is seen as a key move and a guide for parents and teachers regarding spotting abuse of youngsters is to be distributed. Mr Ortola said that according to the European council one in five youngsters will suffer some form of abuse during their childhood, usually without guardians or teachers being aware it is happening.

The final was held near Vizcaya, in the Basque region, over the weekend of October 22 where Paco finished a very creditable sixth. He declared himself delighted with this result as his main goal this year had always been to reach the final itself. At the beginning of October Paco had received an award from Callosa in recognition of his achievements in his chosen field.

Benidorm Wades Into Time Zone Debate

By Simon Russel

HOSBEC, the group representing Benidorm’s hospitality and hotel sector, has estimated that the city loses around 7% of tourists simply due to the clocks going back at the end of October. They have asked the Valencian Generalitat to open the debate about whether the heavily tourist dependent region should damage it’s main income generator just to be in step with the rest of Spain.

Efforts for Sick Child Expand Out To Schools

By Simon Russel

ALL the schools in Benidorm have now joined in with the efforts help raise money for a 9 year old boy in Sax who suffers from multiple sclerosis. As well as the public schools the town’s crèches and private schools will all be

setting up collection points for plastic bottle tops. The local police have been especially active in the campaign which has been ongoing for several months and is now being operated in almost all municipal buildings.

This comes at a time when the Balearic Islands are considering abandoning the six month “winter” time zone for similar reasons. It has also been pointed out that as the Balearics and Valencia are both on the east of the country they are actually more effected by the darker evenings. The switch to European time zones was made under the Franco regime and many feel it is time to seriously consider repealing that decision.

Matsuyama Wins WGC

When Henrik Stenson and Rory McIlroy are in the top five of a golf tournament, the competition is usually better than it was Sunday at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China. That’s because Stenson (16 under) and McIlroy (15 under) got absolutely destroyed by Hideki Matsuyama, who

closed with a 66 in the final round to get to 23 under and win by seven. It was the 10th-ranked Matsuyama’s first win on the 2016-17 PGA Tour season and first WGC win ever. However, it was the second time he has won in the past two weeks after he also took the Japan Open.

This tournament was never really close, either. Matsuyama led by three after rounds two and three and then lapped the field for good measure Sunday. He made 29 birdies on the week and did not make a single bogey in his final 45 holes. Two-and-a-half rounds of basically perfect golf.

Bale Could Finish Career at Real

Gareth Bale has signed a new contract with Real Madrid that will tie him to the club until June 2022 - meaning only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo earn more than the Welshman (and even then, only just). The European champions confirmed the deal – which will see the 27-yearold’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu reach nine years if the full contract is honoured – on Sunday. “Real Madrid and Gareth Bale have agreed an extension to the player’s contract, keeping him at the club until the 30th of June 2022,” read the club’s statement. “Gareth Bale will appear at a press conference in the media room at the Santiago Bernabeu on Monday at 1:30pm.” And the Telegraph explained where that puts Bale on the food chain, so to speak. “Messi and Ronaldo earn net salaries of around €21 million (£19 million) while Bale’s earning puts him ahead of Neymar, whose recently signed deal with Barcelona took him to an estimated €17 million (£15 million)”, they report. Bale signed from Tottenham in what was then a world-record €100million deal in 2013 and won the Champions League in two of his first three years with Madrid. Much was made of Bale’s financial

worth vs Real team-mate Ronaldo’s, but while his transfer fee eclipsed what the club paid Manchester United for CR7, he appears to have consistently remained behind the Portuguese star on the wages front. Bale, who played in Madrid’s 4-1 win away to Alaves on Saturday, has made 135 Madrid appearances in all competitions and scored 63 goals. “I’d be happy to see out my contract here. In the future, I don’t know when I’m going to retire but I’m not looking past the next few years to be honest. I’ve been fully concentrated on Real since I got here. The main thing is to concentrate on my football and everything else is dealt with by my agents.”

Buzz Sport Fuming Mourinho Awaits FA Charge After Burnley Stalemate

Jose Mourinho’s team may not be able to score league goals for love nor money these days but the Manchester United manager could be about to receive his second Football Association charge in less than a fortnight. Last week Mourinho was slapped with a misconduct charge after comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to his side’s match at Liverpool - charges he has until 6pm this evening to answer. But Mourinho is expected to have his collar felt by the FA again following Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Burnley. Despite dominating the match United had 37 shots at goal (their most in a Premier League game since 2003-04 when such statistics began) to Burnley’s seven - the Red Devils couldn’t find a way past the visitors’ defence, and the frustration was too much for Mourinho. The flashpoint was the rejection by referee Mark Clattenburg of a United penalty appeal late in the first half. Mourinho was clearly incensed by the official’s refusal to point to the spot after Jon Flanagan’s challenge on Matteo Darmian, and when he emerged for the second half the Portuguese was escorted to a seat in the stands at Old Trafford. There he remained for the rest of the game, a helpless spectator as his

side slipped to eighth in the table, eight points behind joint leaders Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, all of whom cruised to comfortable victories on Saturday. United have now won just one of their past seven league games and have failed to score in their last three. Indeed, the only league goal they managed in October was Anthony Martial’s strike against Stoke on the second of the month. Mourinho didn’t make himself available for the media after United’s latest setback, leaving it to his assistant, Rui Faria, to field the inevitable questions about his manager’s banishment to the stand. “I don’t know what happened,” he said. “It is not important what Jose said. What is important is what the referee writes in his report.” According to The Sun the FA, who are awaiting Clattenburg’s report on the incident, “are fed up with the Manchester

United boss’ antics and want to come down hard on him”. He will receive an automatic one-match touchline ban and £8,000 fine for the sending-off against Burnley but the paper predicts that those punishments could be increased if Clattenburg’s report is critical with even the possibility of a stadium ban. It’s not the first time that United have had cause to bemoan the officiating of

53

Clattenburg this season; in September’s Manchester derby City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo clattered into Wayne Rooney 11 minutes into the second half. “I know the rules of the game, it’s obvious it was a penalty,” fumed Mourinho after the 2-1 defeat. “We were punished by our bad first half, my responsibility, and we were punished by Mark with his bad decisions in the second half.”

Red Bull: Vettel Demotion Correct ed Bull have insisted the Mexican GP stewards were right to strip Sebastian Vettel, their former driver, of third place for blocking Daniel Ricciardo on the penultimate lap of the race. The ruling promoted Ricciardo to third place in a chaotic end to raceday and demoted Vettel, who may yet face further punishment for a

foul-mouthed ‘meltdown’ over team radio, to fifth. Having previously seen Max Verstappen stripped of third place, Red Bull staged a private podium ceremony at an otherwise deserted circuit for Ricciardo after the stewards’ verdict was handed down several hours after the chequered flag had fallen. By contrast, a thrilled

Ricciardo said “I’m pleased with the outcome.” “The only thing l am disappointed about is not to have been there [on the podium] in that moment but the podium is still there and I’m going up there to celebrate with some of the guys,” he added. The Australian was subsequently joined on the

podium for the spoof ceremony by team-mate Verstappen who had crossed the line in third only to be told he had been demoted while he stood in the drivers’ pre-podium room with race victor Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Ricciardo, meanwhile, is guaranteed to finish third in the Drivers’ Championship behind

the Mercedes pair following his eighth podium-scoring result of the year. “Mercedes have dominated for the last three years but in two out of those three years I’ve at least been the next guy,” reflected Ricciardo. “I don’t want to always be that next guy but it’s a little bit of an achievement.”

Lewis Backs Klitschko Over Joshua

Retired heavyweight great Lennox Lewis believes Wladimir Klitschko’s vast experience will prove too much for Anthony Joshua if the two meet next spring as is a strong possibility. Speaking with Sky Sports News HQ, Lewis said he favours 40-year-old Klitschko to beat 27-year-old Joshua, but only “slightly.” “I would have to say Wladimir [wins] because of the experience,” Lewis said. “We have seen a lot of Anthony Joshua’s fights but he has knocked out everybody so what has he learned? Where is the experience there? You know Wladimir is almost up to 70 fights so you have got the experience and the

old, and you have got the new and the strong. So which one are you going to take? I will take experience but only slightly. When you get experience, you have to look at Wladimir’s body. Can Wladimir’s body take more going into the ring and more fights? I don’t know where he is on at that level. We are going to have to see.” The fight, if it happens, will prove a huge gamble for Joshua, 17-0(17) and yet to be extended beyond the 7thround in a pro fight. But as Lewis asks, how much has the soon to be 41-year-old got left at this advanced stage in his long career? A classic case of Young Tiger taking on Old Lion, this hugely intriguing fight

is about as close to a 50-50 match-up as you could find in the heavyweight division today. We want to see what happens if and when Joshua has to dig deep into his reserves of stamina in the late rounds of a fight. Can Klitschko take AJ there? A Joshua KO win would really be a sensation. Let’s hope this fight gets made. Klitschko has been out of the ring for far too long and fans want to find out just how good Joshua really is. Assuming he comes through okay in his upcoming December 10 IBF title defence (opponent still to be confirmed but Eric Molina looking likely to get the shot) Joshua could be heading into his very first superfight.

TOO LATE FOR LEWIS?

Lewis Hamilton has won the Mexican Formula One Grand Prix but Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg remains in pole position to claim his first world title with two races remaining. Hamilton’s pole-to-flag victory was the triple world champion’s eighth of the season and puts him level with France’s Alain Prost in the all-time lists with 51 career victories. Only Michael Schumacher (91) has won more. Rosberg, who would have clinched the title had he won and Hamilton finished 10th or lower, finished 8.354 seconds behind to anchor champions Mercedes

to their sixth one-two finish of the season. The German, who holds a 19-point championship lead over Hamilton, can clinch the title if he wins the penultimate round at Sao Paulo’s Interlagos circuit in Brazil in two weeks’ time. “Lewis has been too fast this weekend,” said Rosberg. “I just have to accept second place.” Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took third place when Red Bull’s Dutch teenager Max Verstappen, who provided much of the afternoon’s entertainment, was penalised after the chequered flag for gaining an advantage when going off the track.
