Brits Encouraged To Volunteer by Simon Russell

THE British Consulate in Spain have issued a statement clarifying the role of the Red Cross in Spain and how it effects the expatriate community. Not all people were aware, for instance, that they could use the Red Cross’s “panic alarm” emergency service which allows vulnerable and solitary residents to continue living an independent home life. The other thing that the Red Cross constantly needs is volounteers and the call

for help has gone out to the British expat community, especially the existing network of charities and volunteers. English speakers are particularly sought after to help with services such as the panic alarm which is available in English for those who request it. For further information visit the consulates Travel Aware site at www.gov.uk/travelaware or see their Facebook page.

Huge Waterspout Forms Off Valencia Coast By Spencer WIlliams

A very large waterspout, tornado over water, was seen in the Gulf of Valencia, Spain on November 27, 2016 and recorded by numerous witnesses. The rotating column of air over water was described by the national weather service Aemet as “the clearest and most imposing one” sighted in an entire decade in the Valencia region. Locals and tourists waited with bated breath after a huge waterspout patrolled the southern coast of Spain dangerously close to the shore. The waterspout, which was thought to have had a wind speed of around 50 miles per hour, veered off further into the sea instead of reaching land and becoming a devastating tornado The vortex was best seen from the towns of Sueca, Cullera, Mareny de Barraquetes and El Perelló, where people quickly shared videos of the rare weather event in the social media. “There are many reports of waterspouts, but it would be hard to find another one with such an imposing structure as Sunday’s,” said Aemet. Much of the Valencia region had been on a weekend alert for heavy rains with wild weather affecting road and rail links. Traiguera, in Castellón province, registered 81.4 liters of rainfall per square meter on Saturday,

while Sueca and El Perelló also reported hailstorms. Intense rainfall is expected again on Monday in several parts of Spain, particularly in the Valencia region and the Balearic Islands, according to the weather service. Tornadic waterspouts like the one spotted off eastern Spain are tornadoes that form over water or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado and are associated with severe thunderstorms, high winds, large hail and dangerous lightning. They are common in tropical and subtropical waters such as the Florida Keys but are not a regular occurrence off the coast of Spain. The average spout is around 165 feet and their average speed of 50mph corresponds to the weakest type of tornado on land. The largest waterspout can have diameters of 330 feet and last up to one hour, although the average lifetime is just five to 10 minutes. Waterspouts are regarded as dangerous to swimmers and people on boats. They also pose a risk to aircraft. Helicopters flying near waterspouts can be damaged and thrown off-course.

Giving4Giving Raise 4500€ In November

By Simon Russell

Giving4Giving had a busy November with 2 cabaret events earlier in the month raising 4500 euros for local charities and also have just finished help with the painting of a children’s home in Ondara and bought the children a tablet each for Christmas as a special surprise. A local painter and decorator and his wife from Albir painted the childrens home for free with Giving4Giving providing the materials and expenses with the charity Grant a Wish taking care of a hotel for them as it took 5 days to complete. A job like this would be in the region of 2000 euros so it was a very generous gesture of Barry and Donna who did the painting. Giving4Giving has now donated over 65.000 euros to charity and will donate much more before the end of the year.

Sports Dopers Stopped In Their Tracks

By Simon Russell

NINE people have been arrested by the Guardia Civil suspected of selling illegal anabolic steroids and similar drugs. The gang specialised in sports doping drugs, such as steroids, and it is believed their activities could have netted them around 2 million euros. Valencia and Alicante were key cities in their operations network while Malaga and Granada were also being used as bases for their activities. The operation has been ongoing for over three years and various

arrests have been made over this period related to the doping network. However the Guardia are hopeful that these recent arrests are close to the heart of the operation. The police now have a significant amount of potential evidence to plough through including paper records dating back to 2007, further complicated by the fact that much of the money has been laundered over the years. The police may also have an interest in looking into groups linked to the money laundering activity, often legitimate businesses.

Smaller traders join in with Black Friday By Simon Russell

ANOTHER import from our friends in the USA, love it or hate it Black Friday appears to be here to stay. Originally a sales day in the US for the day after Thanksgiving this soon spread online and is now firmly entrenched in shops across Spain in the “real world”. In Alicante about 25% of smaller traders were offering Black Friday discounts and were expecting to see an increase in sales of over 10% with

many people starting their Christmas shopping early. The day has been popular with large stores for a while but this is the first year that the smaller traders have really got on board - although increased sales at a discounted price is not something that all of them can afford to be a part of. Some of the larger retailers started the sales before Friday itself and others have even introduced a Black Week or Black Weekend.

Gender Violence Awareness Campaign Comes to City’s Bars

By Simon Russell

BENIDORM’S Council for Equality is distributing serviettes in the towns many bars and café’s with the logo “No to Gender Violence” alongside the town logo. 25 November was the Day Against Gender Violence and this move is part of the campaign to spread the message that in this day and age gender violence is unacceptable - and the days of the police possibly turning a blind eye are long gone. Most of the towns and villages in the area recognised the day in some form. Denia had a musical theatre presentation illustrating the issue while Calpe

has been focusing on a programme of talks aimed at educating teenagers about the problem. Torrevieja released balloons at 11.00 pm across the city to coincide with the schools morning breaks and pupils will receive an explanation of what the day is about at this time. Crevillent council will be reading out the town’s manifesto at midday exactly on the 25th which will include a workshop on the subject aimed at secondary school pupils and their parents. 37 women have died so far this year in Spain as a result of domestic abuse.

Kids Come to Parliament

By Simon Russell

AS part of UNICEF’S Children’s Forum, students from twelve of the regions secondary schools attended a special “children’s sessions” of the

Valencian Parliament in Valencia city on 21 November. Vice president of the Generalitat, Monica Oltra, ran the session while other senior members were also there. The students discussed issues close to their hearts such as children’s rights and the environment. The importance of youngsters taking interest in and, where possible, taking part in, the political process was also discussed as this is one of the key aims of the UNICEF initiative.

Record Turnout for Marathon

By Simon Russell

19,000 runners took part in the 36th Valencian Marathon on 20 November, the highest amount of contestants ever to take part. The event, recognised as one of Spain’s premier marathons, was won in 2.07:38 by Kenyan Victor Kipchirchir with fellow Kenyans following him home in second and third.

The woman’s event was also won by a Kenyan athlete, Valary Jemeli Aiyabei, in a new event record of 2.24:48, over two minutes better than the previous best. The good times were achieved despite the unseasonably warm late November weather, with cool overcast conditions being the ideal for distance runners.

Skiing Season Set to Commence

By Simon Russell

ALTHOUGH it only seems like yesterday that the summer was in full swing, the first opening of Spain’s ski resorts serves to remind us that we do have more than one season over here. As usual the first resorts to open are in Aragon, although the projected opening date of the last weekend in November is earlier than recent years due to the cold spell of weather

in the region. The handful of skiing areas close to Valencia, mainly in Teruel, are not yet ready to open but are hoping to commence their season on the weekend of December 5, weather permitting. Spain’s skiing industry has suffered recently, due to a combination of the recession and the milder winters, and many are hoping this year will reverse the trend.

School Bullies Arrested

By Simon Russell

A gang of four fourteen year old children carried out a systematic catalogue of abuse on a classmate at an Alicante secondary school. Their victim, a girl also aged fourteen, suffered verbal and psychological abuse at school, on social networks, and even outside her own home by the bullies. She had begun to suffer anxiety attacks and her parents changed

schools, but the bullying continued unabated before eventually the police stepped in and arrested the group, three boys and a girl. Bullying is seen as a serous problem in many parts of Spain, especially in the 11 to 16 age group. Online bullying in particular has seen a huge increase in recent years with many victims suffering severe psychological problems as a result.

Rains Cause School Evacuation

By Simon Russell

HEAVY storms on 22 November caused the evacuation of the College 103 in Valencia, not the first time that this has happened. The school, which is located within a barracks, had been evacuated twice earlier this year alone and teachers and parents have again protested to the authorities.

When the school leaks water comes in near lighting and power sources, so an immediate evacuation is required for safety reasons. The repairs required have been tendered out but no final decision has yet been made, and there is concern that this situation will continue through the autumn and winter months.

Three Torrevieja Beaches to Get New Walkways

By Simon Russell

Torrevieja Council’s Board of Governors has approved the start of a procedure to revise the General Urban Land Use Plan (PGOU), which dates back to 1986 and has been modified 103 times since by successive Partido Popular (PP) local governments. Councillor Fanny Serrano said this revision is especially important because the current situation has no coordination or coherence and should

never have been allowed to get this bad. The process is a slow and complex one, as the first step is to draw up the conditions for the contract to carry out the revision and this will take about two years. The Board also approved minor spending of €21,489.60 to acquire walkways for beaches. Serrano noted that this amount only covers one year

and therefore will have to be budgeted for in future years as well. The Town Hall had already obtained the necessary approval from the Provincial Coasts Service. These concrete walkways will improve accessibility to the beaches of Los Locos, El Cura and Los Náufragos. Also approved was multi-annual spending to supply materials for the Town Hall’s printers and faxes, at a cost of €74,380.16 per year. Documentation was requested from the person contracted to be the Town Hall’s legal representative, who was given the contract after presenting an offer of €41,788 per year, compared

to €180,000 under the previous contract. Finally, urgent spending was approved for the public awareness campaign to eradicate violence against women, and spending was reallocated to enable payment of productivity bonuses for the last two months of the year.

Bikes Burned In Revenge For Sacking

By Simon Russell

A 32 year old man has been accused of destroying 15 Telepizza delivery scooters in what is thought to be a revenge attack for the fast food company firing his girlfriend. The incident took place in Sant Vicent del Raspeig (Alicante) earlier in November. The delivery bikes were all stored overnight in a garage when the blaze occurred and police investigators had reason to believe that the fire was started intentionally. The Guardia Civil interviewed several persons of interest and after the man’s story had various contradictions he was arrested and charged.

The value of the destroyed scooters is around €30,000 while

the garage was also damaged in the fire.

Did the Earth Move For You?

By Simon Russell

AN earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale occurred in the Elche and Crevillente area on 23 November. It’s epicentre was calculated to be alongside the small resort of Albatera and about 10 kilometres underground.

The quake was felt by many and social networks were busy with the reports for a while. However this is the second such quake in the area this year so it will not have been as much of a shock to the locals here as in other parts.

There was also no reports of emergency services being alerted, with landslides being seen as the biggest threat in the area. Towns as far from the epicentre as San Isidro and Catral reported feeling tremors.

Himalaya Tandoori Altea This amazing restaurant is a dining experience to remember, which I can put this down to one main aspect and that is the fantastic taste and quality of the cuisine. I thought there was an outstanding menu choice together with quality cooking to back it up. A perfect place to visit during this festive season the Himalaya offers first class Indian and Nepalese cuisine. The bustling atmosphere gives the feel of a restaurant that is a home to many regulars as most of the tables were occupied, a good sign I’m sure you’ll agree. There was also a birthday party in full swing at a large round table including a sing along to Happy Birthday song as well as the popping open of a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the occasion. I had been served a basket of half round poppadoms with dips that were delicious and crunchy, a tasty start to what was a great night out. While we were taking the time to choose our main course the owner had recommended we shared a Deluxe Mix Starter an amazing combination of King

Pawns, Chicken Murgmalai Tikka (with Cheese), Makhmali Seekh Kebab, Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Spring Roll, Chicken Tikka, Aloo Chop (Nepalese Potato Ball) served on a large platter that was decorated with leaves, tomatoes and lemon together with a combination of 5 different sauces. (mint, tomato salsa, sweet chilli and mayonnaise) The mild spicy tastes of this mixed starter all combined to make an exotic array of the finest Indian & Nepalese food. Our main courses consisted of a King Prawn Goan Curry, Nababi Chicken Tikka that was served on a sizzling plate, also a Lamb Kadai served in a hot iron dish and a Chicken Tikka Labab. The four different dishes gave our team an assortment of tastes from a mild coconut Goan prawn curry to a hot and spicy Chicken Tika Labab. We all have our own tastes when it comes to how spicy we want our curry to be and it seems that the difference with dining at the Himalya Tandoori is the special Nepalese spices and cooking technique. The chefs original recipes and tastes match

the cool and friendly environment and there is a really great choice of different types of curries. To complement our main dishes we were served a selection of rice and Naan bread that included a Cheesy Naan and a Garlic Naan that were truly mouth watering. Dessert included a choice of Pisachio Kulfo or Mango Ice Cream both home made on the premises The restaurant was founded in 2004 and was the first Nepalese restaurant in the Costa Blanca. Located on the sea front just past the harbour the setting is beautiful to go along with the exceptional service in a comfortable and relaxed surrounding. The kitchen is led by head chef Mr. Keshar Bahadur Thapa who has over 28 years of experience in cooking Nepalese and Indian dishes that are simply delectable. Visit their web site at www.himalayatandoorialtea. es or TripAdvisor page for up to date information and special events or call to book on 965 840 968. If you enjoy Indian cuisine then you will love the food at Himalayan Tandoori at Altea.

Four Seasons Restaurant

The Four Seasons restaurant in Old Town Benidorm is probably the busiest British diner in the area. A well known establishment and one that has a history dating back to the days of Michaels Restaurant, it is now in the safe hands of John, former owner of the Two Palms. His food choice really is hard to beat for both menu choice and quality, not to mention the prices starting from 8.95€ for the early bird 3 course menu.

deep-fried Brie served with a raspberry coulis. The presentation of the dishes is superb and the taste is just as good. For the main course I had the Dutch fillet with a pepper sauce and homemade chunky chips. For meat lovers there is a a full range of steaks and grills with the option to add a starter and dessert for only 3€ each! The main menu offers three cours-

The restaurant has a clean crisp décor and the large dining room comfortably seats over 70 guests so it is an ideal venue for a private party. With tall windows giving natural light all the way around and stylish table settings it is a place that has a relaxed ambiance enhanced with gentle background music. The drinks menu is on the table when you arrive and it has a choice of nine cocktails, as well as an extensive range of modern wines. The list includes Pinot Grigio, Mateus Rose, Faustino as well as Sangria and Cava. If you want to complete the after dining experience, there is also a choice of 12 delicious liquor coffees. Our visit started with a warm breadcrumb covered Chicken Pakora served on salad and we also had the

es for 13.95€, a wide range of dishes that include traditional favourites such as Roast Beef with Yorkshire pudding and fish and chips. The chips are big, crispy and very chunky, served on the side. The vegetables also are served separately while the overall portion sizes are fantastic. Our other main course was the medallions of pork, tender meat pieces that offered a rich flavour. Both of the meals were well presented, good quality, hearty food. The Four Seasons restaurant can be found in Calle La Biga, Old Town Benidorm. Easy to find, the Four Seasons is located just off the Ruzafa by Hotel Mayna. Don’t miss the 4 Course Sunday lunch menu for 9.95€

Stress Free Family Christmas, It’s All In The Planning!!! Christmas is a time where families and friends get together. Unfortunately families all under one roof for a long period of time can be stressful. Cooking, entertaining and trying to please all members of the family can be difficult to achieve. Firstly resolve any grievances in the past year with family members or friends that are going to be around. This will stop old grudges and arguments from being ignited. Give people jobs to do on the day, people like to feel useful. By delegating the pressure of doing it all is relieved and the feeling of being taken advantage of will subside. The more active people are, the less likely they are to be confrontational or grumpy. Do not be a martyr - allow people to help!! • Discuss beforehand what your visitors would like to eat and watch on television, and what the children would like to do • Try and have some kind of timetable otherwise people will just sit for hours watching television. • Avoid spending too much time with individuals that you do not always get along with. • If people or children are getting restless or overexcited, go for a long walk. A change of scene and fresh air will make everyone feel better.

• Try not to drink too much alcohol!!! Ha! • If you are going to a family members for Christmas set boundaries beforehand like the time to arrive and when you have to leave • Avoid certain triggers like conversation topics such as religion, politics Think positive, every family has some conflict. It is normal and every family has it. You will survive it just pre plan before, try and get a good night’s sleep the night before. At some point during the day sit back and enjoy it!!! And for those who STILL haven´t finished their Christmas shopping for that special person or loved one, remember Christmas gift vouchers are still available at The Family Medical Centre, Albir.

One of the wonderful things we all love about cats is their soft, delicate fur. When they ingest dead, loose hairs in the process of grooming, what usually happens is that they pass through the digestive system without any problems. However, if too much hair builds up in the stomach, it causes irritation of the stomach lining, and this when a furball will be produced. Fur balls can be a recurrent problem for cats, particularly those from long-haired breeds. It is an unpleasant experience for cats, and symptoms generally include vomiting, unproductive retching, constipation and a loss of appetite. This article looks at how cats suffering from fur balls can be treated, and what can be done to prevent them becoming a problem. Sometimes cats who suffer from furballs may eat grass and garden plants to try and medicate themselves. Grass causes them to vomit, which may also bring up the fur ball as well. Thus, if you see your cat eating grass, this may be an early indication that they are suffering from fur balls. One thing owners can do to help prevent fur balls is regular combing of their cat’s hair. This will get rid of much of the dead hair before it can be ingested. Fine-toothed combs are best for short haired cats, while widetoothed combs tend to be more suitable for long haired cats. It’s not advisable to use brushes, because they are much less effective at getting all the loose hair out. One of the traditional remedies

for furballs is petroleum jelly. A small amount is applied to a cat’s paw, so the cat can lick it up. The molecules of petroleum jelly are too large to be absorbed, so they retain their form and act as a lubricant to help the ingested hair through the cat’s digestive system and out in the normal way. There are varieties of petroleum jelly in different flavours (such as tuna) which are designed especially for cats. These will make the jelly more palatable to cats, so are a good option if your cat shows reluctance towards this treatment. Another common treatment for the condition is natural herb tablets. These tablets are a mixture of herbs including valerian root, dandelion root, and senna leaf, powdered and pressed into tablet form. It works as a gentle laxative, so it is generally

given for the relief of constipation or to help treat cats suffering from furballing. It is recommended that cats who are experiencing noticeable discomfort because of furballs are given one of these tablets daily. In addition, it is also a good idea to give cats who are prone to fur balls one tablet a day during their moulting period. The one caveat to bear in mind when giving herbal treatments such as these is that they are not suitable for pregnant or lactating females. Once cats get rid of their furballs, they normally recover quickly, and are soon back to normal. However, it is important to be aware that your cat may be suffering from dehydration because of the vomiting, and may need a special diet for a few days. Skiing In Spain Believe it or not Spain is a fantastic place to go skiing. Despite Spain’s hot climate due to it’s location in Southern Europe it is actually the second most mountainous country in Europe, which surprises most people. The most/best ski resorts in Spain are located in the Pyrenees on the border with France. Nevertheless it is even possible to ski in Spain on the Southern coast – the Costa del Sol – in the Sierra Nevada resort close to Granada.

Other ski resorts are located near the major Spanish cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. The cost of skiing in Spain is relatively high when compared to many other resorts in Northern Europe, both for ski hire and for lift passes. In some resorts a day’s lift pass can be as high as 40 euros. There are many ski resorts to choose from no matter what area of Spain you live in or intend to visit.

There is just one ski resort in the very south of Spain and you might expect this ski resort to be small and with a very short season – not so – this is a major ski resort by any standards. Set very high giving a very long ski season this is a very large resort with plenty of runs for all levels and it has even hosted World Cup skiing events. Sierra Nevada – Europe’s most southern ski resort situated on the Costa del Sol famous for it’s sunshine and hot climate! It literally is possible to ski in the morning and in the afternoon be sun-

bathing on the beach. Set high up at 2100 to 3300 metres in the Penibetico range and 32 km from the historic city of Granada. Seriously good skiing with 87 kilometres of pistes.

Skiing In The South Of Spain

Ski Resorts Near Valencia Considering it’s southern location in Spain and apparent lack of a major mountain range most people are amazed when told that there is skiing in this region close to the Costa Blanca coast – a major tourist srea for sun lovers. Nevertheless the height of the mountains near Teruel is above 2,000 metres although do note that these ski resorts are very, very small and do rely heavily on artificial snowmaking machines.

250x170mm

Javalambre– Just 1 hour drive west of Valencia towards Teruel is this tiny ski resort with 6.9 kilometres of runs. A very open ski resort – few trees and wide runs mean this is ideal for beginners. Valdelinares– Also just 1 hour drive west of Valencia in the direction of Teruel is this tiny Spanish ski resort. There are only 7.5 kilometres of runs. Mainly set in trees this ski resort has a real alpine feel to it and some good red runs.

Clubs & Charities U3A Marina Baixa Opening Night a General Meeting Great Success Last Monday, the U3A Marina Baixa held their Monthly General Meeting at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. There were 170 Members in attendance, including 8 new Members, plus 2 visitors. Following this months meeting, there was no speaker, instead there was a display of the Members Craft Group, which included many hand made Christmas cards, which were available to purchase. There was also a selection of the watercolour groups

As this is the AGM, the doors will open from 9.30 am to enable Members to pay their 10 euros Membership fee prior to the start of the Meeting.

A full house turned up at Gata de Gorgos’ Union Musical Theatre for Javea Players adaptation of “Our Man in Havana” by Graham Greene. The theatre was a perfect setting for the play, with good acoustics and no problem hearing the dialogue. Regarding the performance itself, the first half set the scene nicely introducing the audience to the various characters and locations while building the plot. The second half had more belly laughs as the play rattled along nicely to it’s climax which I won’t spoil here for those unfamiliar with the story. The standout actors for me were Andrew Cleven as a world weary Jim Wormold, the main protagonist, and Nigel Poole’s suitably pompous Hawthorne, the MI5 man.

However the cast were excellent all round with most playing several parts and no-one who could be accused of the classic amateur dramatics trait of over acting. Credit as well to the set designers and the cast for managing the multiple set and costume changes throughout the evening. All in all an excellent and very enjoyable production and very professionally executed throughout.

20% Of Foreigners Plan On Buying A Holiday Home In Spain

According to a study carried out by franchise estate agent’s Iberia Real Estate, two out of every ten foreigners plan on purchasing a second home in Spain. The most popular destinations for these potential foreign property buyers are located along the Mediterranean coast. With the rise in tourism and the threat of terrorist attacks in nearby countries, Spain is becoming even more popular with foreign visitors who are thinking of

buying a holiday home abroad. Tourism is up 6% on last year, with more than 42.4 million international tourists visiting the peninsular and its islands in just the first seven months of the year. Iberia Real Estate’s survey has revealed that the Germans are the most interested in acquiring a second property in Spain, particularly in the beach areas of the Levante, Cataluña and Mallorca. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the study has shown that

coastal destinations along the Mediterranean continue to attract the greatest number of potential foreign property buyers, other sources have also revealed that many others are looking at other areas including Andalucía, Cantabria and Galicia and destinations slightly inland where property is much cheaper. Many are still opting to buy repossession properties from the bank due to the accessible prices, often as much as 50% cheaper than their market value, and conditions on offer.

Home Mortgage Arrears Continue to Fall

According to data published this week by the Bank of Spain, the number of households defaulting on their mortgage for a home purchase stood at 4.65% of the total housing mortgages in the second quarter of 2016, down from 5.2% in the same period of 2015. Compared with the first quar-

ter of 2016, the number of mortgage defaults moderated slightly, as the rate then was 4.78%. El Mundo reported that, in total, the value of all mortgage loans granted to households for the acquisition of a home in Spain stood at 523,595 million euros at the end of June this

year, which is 18,940 million euros less than the figure quoted last year, representing a decline of 3.5%. Of the total housing loans, some 24,535 million euros were in question in June of this year, compared with 28,216 million euros in June of 2015. The number of loans for home

purchase began 2016 low, after accumulating five consecutive years of moderation to the end of 2015. Since 2010, the last year in which there was an increase in home loans, the value of home loans has fallen by 16%, dropping from 632,449 million euros to 531,256 million euros at the end of 2015.

Christmas Craft Fair in Altea

This year Amata, the regional craft association, sets up shop in Altea with thirty craft stalls next to the Town Hall, between Thursday 8 and Sunday 11 December. Amata is a craft association that insists that each and every stall taking part in one of its markets sells only goods made by the person behind the stall. No imported bits and pieces, and nothing made in a facto-

ry - just original creative work, that reflects the care and attention to details of the craftsman or woman. Some of the people taking part will be working quietly at their stall and you can watch while they work. Most of them are more than willing to talk about what they make, and why they make what you see. These are not people shifting boxes, these are people who have chosen this way of life because they feel it is important, and they want to share their enthusiasm. The market will offer a wide choice of original craft work: toys and puppets, paintings, pottery and decorated boxes, leather bags an belts, hand made shoes and boots, 3-D caricatures, candles and beautifully painted Spanish roof tiles, and several stalls with jewelry in silver, macramĂŠ, brass, origami, ceramics, wood, bone, horn or enamel. There are also a few stalls with cheese,

dates and dried figs, honey, jams and typical Christmas sweets. Besides the stalls there are workshops for the younger visitors, where they can be shown how to use their own hands to create some original Christmas decorations. There are ponies on which children can ride round the fair, an old fashioned merry-go-round and in one corner wooden table top games. All around the square are bars and restaurants and the old town has quite a few picturesque streets, cozy little squares, pretty town houses and quite a few craft shops. Between the craft fair and the old town, Altea is just the sort of place any person who is looking for a tasteful and original Christmas present would be tempted to visit. The Christmas Fair starts on Thursday 8 December at 11 am, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday opening times are from 11 am till 9 pm, and on Sunday 11 December from 11 am to 2 pm. If you want to look at the sort of stuff displayed on the stalls in typical Amata Fairs, have a look at www.amata.es (also in English). For more information (in English) you can call 639 979 678.

El Gordo de Navidad (The Big One)

El Gordo de Navidad is one of the largest and richest lotteries in the world, while the first prize is currently ‘only’ 4€ million, El Gordo has the biggest prize pool of any lottery in the world, last year totalling over two billion euros! The lottery, officially known as Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad or Loteria de Navidad, began in 1812 and has become an annual Spanish tradition. El Gordo is drawn every December 22. and is considered a national event, it differs from standard lotteries in

two important aspects. Unlike other lotteries, whose draws are generally brief and completed with relatively little fanfare, El Gordo de Navidad draws take hours to complete due to the sheer number of prizes and the format is closer to a raffle than a standard lottery. The balls are drawn from two huge spheres called ‘bombos’, One holding wooden balls with the 5 digit numbers on them and the other holding balls with the prize amounts. As the draw takes place, two

children stand next to one of the spheres and one takes the ball with the prize amount while the other takes the ball with the ticket number. They then take the balls over to a table where the official lotto observers are and the members of the lottery commission take note of the winning number and corresponding prize. then the balls get placed in a type of rack for the records. This repeats for hours until all prizes are given out.

How to Play

Tickets cost 200€ each, but they can be split into decimos tenths. If you only buy a single decimo then you can only win a tenth of the prize that the ticket wins. There are 160 series - each series has a jackpot of 4€ million and around 15,000 smaller prizes. Each series has

Open Air Ice Rink

Christmas preparations are well under way in Benidorm and that means the return of the Ice Rink. The rink will be installed as usual in the Town Hall Square and is usually open daily from 10:00 - 22:00 until the 11th of January (approximately). It is advisable to wear suitable clothing and gloves 100,000 tickets - num- are obligatory. bered 00,000 to 99,999. The Town Hall Square also has the traditional Bouncy Castles, and other entertainment for the What is the younger kids as well as food stalls.

BREXIT UPDATES

Brexit Could Stop All Brits Could Buy Flights From The UK EU Membership MICHAEL O’Leary, the outspoken Ryanair CEO, has accused the British government of “acting like Dad’s Army” in how it is conducting talks with the EU over leaving the Union. He also said that there was a genuine risk that if there is no bilateral deal in place for the airline industry at the time of the UK’s exit, then flights into EU countries

would have to be stopped. O’Leary made his comments at the Airport Operators Association conference in London. At the same event earlier in the week transport secretary Chris Grayling had assured the industry that aviation would be prioritised in any negotiations. However many critics, O’Leary clearly amongst them,

feel that the negotiations have been amateurish and unproductive from the UK’s perspective. Making a more pragmatic point regarding his companies schedules the Ryanair chief said “I need to know by March next year what’s going to happen in Britain in summer 2019. There isn’t a politician who knows that.”

THE chief EU Brexit negotiator, Guy Verhofstadt, has stated that he supports the idea of a motion allowing UK citizens to pay a fee to Brussels which will allow them to retain all the benefits of EU membership when Britain eventually leaves the Union. The motion has been tabled by Charles Goerens, an MEP from Luxembourg, and the statement from respected figures such as Verhofstadt (also the former Belgian prime minister) means it may be getting serious consideration. One aspect of such a proposal would be that the large

number of expat Brits in various EU countries who are currently enquiring about citizenship in their new homes would be able to bypass this by using the buy-in method. Andrew Bridgen, a pro Brexit Tory MP, has called the plan “an attempt to subvert the referendum vote backed by a Brussels which will try every trick in the book to stop us leaving the EU“. Nonetheless, many expatriates here in Spain and other EU countries will be watching this latest development with interest.

Euro Forecast Back to 0.90 Against the Pound

The Euro to Pound Sterling exchange rate (EUR/GBP) is forecast to move higher once more but it will avoid the all-time highs achieved back in 2009. The Pound is ultimately likely to fade against the Euro over coming months with expectations growing that the EUR/GBP will appreciate back towards early-November highs. This is the view of analysts at Danske Bank. However, Danske have actually upped their forecasts for Pound Sterling in the wake of recent economic resilience and assumed a greater Brexit premium. As such, the all-time highs in EUR/GBP seen back in 2009 will be avoided. Why is the Pound’s outlook a little better than it was a few months ago then? Danske argue the prospect of a “renewed special relationship,” between the UK and the US since Trump’s ascendancy is one reason to be a little more optimistic on the UK currency. Upbeat data and the surprisingly good Q3 GDP data, which showed a 0.5% rise and beat estimates, are another reason. Inflation – that harbinger of higher interest rates is also set to continue rising as the depreciated Pound takes its toll. “CPI printed at 1.1% y/y in October and we expect it to increase sharply in coming months – due primarily to the weakening of the GBP. We expect CPI inflation to remain elevated for a period and to peak just below 3% in coming years,” says Danske Bank’s chief analyst Allan Von Mehren. Another notable positive for the Pound is the much-changed outlook for monetary policy. From being convinced the Bank of

England would have to stimulate the economy more – thus putting pressure on the Pound – the consensus now appears to be that they will probably keep shtum. Nevertheless, Brexit uncertainty will probably trump all other considerations since Sterling is expected to weaken to the Euro. And the Euro itself will probably weaken short-term due to increased political risk in the Eurozone prompted by the rise of the far-right and their anti-EU policies. Between December 4 and May 2017, we have the Italian referendum, the Austrian Presidency, the French Presidency and the Dutch General Election. At least two out of the four above are likely to lead to wins for far-right anti-EU parties (Austria and the Netherlands). There is also the possibility of Italy’s referendum leading to a snap general election, which could see a victory for the anti-EU Five Star party, but currently, there is only a 15% chance of this happening.

Ford Ka+ 2016

Despite the name, the Ka+ is not actually related to the Ka - it’s actually based on the Fiesta. Yet, despite being shorter than Ford’s best-selling hatchback, the Ka+ is a proper five seater and has a useable 270-litre boot. There are only two trim levels to choose from - Studio and Zetec - but both versions get lots of kit as standard, including front fog lights, electric door mirrors, Bluetooth and electric front windows. However, unlike the competition, there are no colourful

customisation options for the interior, which means you have to make do with lots of dull grey plastic. Despite being the entry-level car of the Ford range, the Ka+ doesn’t feel below par when it comes to quality. All of the doors shut with a satisfying clunk and the switchgear in the cabin feels on par with anything you’d find in the Mondeo or S-MAX. Soundproofing levels are also impressive, which means the cabin is quiet and a relaxing place to sit. The Ka+ impresses on the road with a smooth ride that does a good job of ironing out bumpy roads and potholes. The steering is precise and light, which makes it easy to navigate tight urban streets and exploit gaps in traffic. The large windscreen and wide door mirrors also provide excellent visibility, which makes reversing and parking a stress free experience. The engine and gearboxes choices are limited. In fact, there is just one engine - a 1.2-litre petrol that comes in two versions - 70PS or 85PS. And there’s only a five-speed manual gearbox. Both versions of the four-cylinder engine return an official 56.5mpg, however, even in its most powerful form, the Ka+ is slow footed, with

0-62mph taking 13 seconds. Opt for the 70PS unit and you’ll be waiting 15 seconds to hit motorway speeds, which makes busy junctions and slip roads a frustrating experience. Despite its shortcomings, the Ka+ is a decent small hatchback, even if it sorely lacks Ford’s excellent 1.0 EcoBoost engine. The interior gets all the basics right, with lots of space and impressive build quality. Running costs are also low, which makes the Ka+ an appealing choice as a second car. However, there’s no hiding the fact that the 1.2-litre engine is weak on performance. The dull interior only enhances the fact that the Ka+ desperately lacks the fun and style of its rivals.

Fatal Traffic a Major Headache Crash In City A 25 year old Italian man died as a result of head injuries sustained in a moped accident in Valencia city on 22 November. A girl of 22, who was on the bike with the dead man, was also hurt but her injuries are not understood to be life threatening. The crash occurred in the early hours of the morning on Calle Alboraya in the city centre. Emergency services were quickly on the scene but were unable to help the young man who was declared dead in the ambulance at the scene of the crash. It had been raining at the time of the crash and police are looking into whether this was the cause of the accident.

ANYONE familiar with the stretch of the N332 road between Oliva and Gandia will be aware how unpleasant it is both for road users and residents. Official acoustic readings now back this up with the noise level registering at up to 32 times what is judged to be acceptable. The busy road runs through the heart of the small villages of Bellereguard, L’Alqueria de la Comtessa and Palmera which are sandwiched between the La Safor areas two major towns, Oliva and Gandia. Around 25 cars per minute pass through the towns although as progress is invar-

iably slow, the noise levels increase further. Noise at this constant level can cause health problems including headaches, insomnia and hearing loss and around 800 residents live in the worst effected areas i.e. directly by the road. This study will be one of many used as ammunition by campaigners aiming to by-pass the N332 in the area or, failing that, make the A7 motorway which runs alongside the N332 toll free. At the least HGV’s should be banished to the A7 many feel, as they contribute significantly to both air and noise pollution.

This Week In Automotive History

The first organized automobile race in the United States took place on this day in 1895 following a July 10 announcement from the Chicago Times-Herald that it would host the race, with a winning prize of $5,000, about $143,000 in today’s dollars. There were 83 vehicles signed up for the race but only six arrived for the race

as many automobiles were incomplete or damaged en route to the race. Two were electric vehicles, entered by Morris & Salom of Philadelphia, and Sturgis of Chicago. Four gas powered Benz vehicles ran the race, imported by H. Mueller & Go. of Decatur, Illinois, R. H. Macy & Co. of New York, and The De la Vergne Re-

frigerating Machine Co. of New York. A Duryea Motor Wagon was the final entrant, and the first to cross the finish line. The Duryea, driven by Charles Duryea, finished the 54 mile course in seven hours and fifty-three minutes, traveling an average of 7 mph. Second place went to the Mueller Benz (pictured).

Clean-Up To Clear Wet Wipes Washed Ashore After Storm

By Javeamigos

Part of the coastline of Xàbia between the port and the Arenal has been invaded by disposed wet wipes after the storms of the past few days whilst the sandy beach of the Arenal has been affected by seaweed. The area affected by the baby wipes stretches from the Triana Bridge to the middle of the beach and cleaners from the municipal company CEPSA have begun the clean-up operation to remove the detritus which is considered to be hazardous waste. Mayor José Chulvi said that the Ayuntamiento depends on the awareness of its residents. He said: “We must stop throwing away these baby wipes irresponsibly because not only is the image of our town at stake

but also the health of our sea which affects sailors, divers and the balance of a unique ecosystem.” The Arenal beach was affected by seaweed and CEPSA have deployed staff to collect and dispose of it. A representative said that it cannot use a vehicle to do the job since the sand is wet and the beach could be badly damaged. In a 2015 report by the Marine Conservation Society, it was reported that the disposable wet wipe had become the fastest growing cause of pollution on beaches with volunteers from the society picking them up at a rate of 35 wet wipes per kilometre of coastline in the UK. In addition, the casual disposal of the wipes down toilets increases the chance of clogging up sewage systems with these blockages often resulting in raw sewage flooding into homes through toilets and sinks. The material used in producing the wet wipe doesn’t break down easily and can often float about in sewers and in the sea for some years. The appearance of supposed ‘flushable’ wet wipes makes no difference.

Tasting The Good Life

THE third weekend in November saw El Poble Nou de Benitatxell represented at the Gastroma food and drink fair, an opportunity to showcase the town’s unique food and drink produce to the wider Valencian Community.

The Biomoscatell project for the area focused on two main products, it’s Moraig wine and their special ecological fruit juice. Co u n c i l l o r for Tourism and Economic promotion, Manolo Segarra, stated that their presence in this type of fair is a benchmark of their ambition.

Reclaiming the Beach

By Simon Russell

THE continued existence of many beaches in the area involves a constant battle against Mother Nature.

The El Portet beach in Moraira is no exception and plans have been announced by TeuladaMoraira Town Hall to reclaim 50 meters of the

sands lost to erosion. As part of a general coastal plan the work has been announced by the team responsible for the responsibility of coastal areas and should begin shortly. The Town Hall have asked people to be aware that algae and vegetation washed up from now until April will not be removed as this is key in helping prevent erosion by forming a barrier against the sand itself.

Taking The Bull By The Horns

By SImon Russell

THERE are plans for Pedreguer to hold a referendum amongst it’s citizens over the future of aspects of it’s Bous al Carrer fiestas. Pedreguer, in the Marina Alta, is one of the most important towns in the community regarding the bull running festivals but also one of the most dangerous and controversial. Two “bull runners” have died at the Pedreguer event in recent years and the controversy comes from the lighted torches

attached to some of the bulls which many feel makes an already inhumane practice even worse. The town hall have announced the peoples poll this month on the practice of the bulls running with fire and how they are caged. While there are many in the town who are fiercely against the activity there are also many supporters who feel that Spain’s traditions are being increasingly undermined by outside forces as well as local government.

World Class Restaurant Retains It’s Status

By Simon Russell

THE Quique Dacosta restaurant in Denia is the only establishment in the Valencian Community to attain the prestigious three Michelin stars rating. The restaurant has now had it confirmed that they have retained the rare rating for a fourth year and the eponymous head chef and proprietor Quique Dacosta and his staff are obviously delighted. Working his way up by starting as a dishwasher at the restaurant which now bears his name Quique celebrates local Valencian and Deniense dishes such as rice and seafood but with a unique twist. The Michelin panel also awarded two stars to the BonAmb Restaurant in

Javea and it’s head chef Alberto Ferrus. Michelin itself defines a two star eatery as “excellent cooking worth a detour” while the maximum three stars is defined as “exceptional cuisine worth a special journey”.

New rules for keeping animals By Simon Russell

TEULADA-MORAIRA Town Hall have issued a decree which sets out clear guidelines for any residents who keep animals as pets or wild-stock. While aiming to protect the rights of animals, the legislation also ensures that the public are protected in matters of hygiene and safety. Specific rules are now in place concerning the keeping of certain animals judged to be potentially dangerous regarding both care and situations where they are in public spaces. Broadly, the guide covers upkeep,

hygiene, interaction with the public and other rules such as humane killing for animals raised for food. Disposal of excrement and proper registration/ micro-chipping etc is also covered. For full details see the Town Hall website www.teuladamoraira.org

Guardamar Town Hall & Local Opticians Fight Blindness By Simon Russell

Dog Beaches Discussed

By Simon Russell

JAVIER Manzanares, Torrevieja’s councillor for beaches, has reported that there is widespread backing within the Town Hall for the proposal to hold a referendum on the subject of dog friendly beaches. The referendum will be to decide where to locate the beach from a choice of six sites. The beaches involved, or in

some instances sections of them, are Cala Ferris, Cala de los Carabineros, Cala del Moro, Cala de los Trabajos, Cala Cornuda and Playa de la Mata. If the change to the local bylaws goes ahead, and once a suitable site has been decided on, they are hoping they will be open to our four legged friends and their owners by next Easter.

The Guardamar Town Hall has launched a campaign to prevent blindness by bringing together several local opticians to offer free eye tests from the 21st of November to the 16th of December. They are inviting all local residents to visit their nearest optician during this period to take advantage of the free eye tests and make sure that eyes are healthy and that their vision is good. One of the participating opticians Specsavers Opticas on Avenida Pais Valenciano is delighted to be part of this important campaign and hopes that everyone will make the time to get their eyes tested. “There are approximately 285 million people worldwide who

live with impaired vision and blindness. Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable through treatment and protective measures. This shows just how important it is to take steps to prevent avoidable blindness from conditions such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.”, explains Francisco Manuel Jurado Alonso, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Guardamar. “All of these conditions and many others can be easily identified with a complete eye test and early diagnosis is crucial to effective treatment and

avoiding permanent vision loss. If necessary, the optometrist will refer you directly for further medical examination with an Ophthalmologist or doctor. We hope that the residents of Guardamar will participate in the Town Hall’s excellent programme to prevent blindness and go and get their eyes tested between 21st of November and the 16th of December – this is an important health check as well as simply because you think you may need glasses.” Specsavers Opticas Guardamar is located in Avda. País Valenciano 43-Bajo, Guardamar del Segura, Alicante, 03140. Call 965 083 273 to book an eye test or visit www.specsavers.es for more information.

Helping Raise Migrant Awareness By Simon Russell

THE photographic exhibition “Somos Migrantes” (We are migrants) is touring the Alicante province until 19 January. Organised by the Orihuela-Alicante diocese and the Migrants with Dignity group the aim is to raise awareness of the plight of migrants and to see them as individuals rather than just considering them in negative terms. The tour will take in Alicante City, Onil, San Vicente del Raspeig and Crevillente after starting earlier this year in Elche. In the spring of 2017, after a break, it is

expected to visit Oriheula. The photographs illustrate some of the difficulties migrants around the world have faced to force them to leave their place of birth such as wars, poverty, persecution and hunger.

Keeping the Religion Out Of Christmas

By Simon Russell

A school in Elche has asked the parents of it’s younger pupils not to bring in religious ornaments to decorate the classroom this Christmas. Whether political correctness gone mad or appropriate sensitivity to other peoples religions depends on your viewpoint, but not all the parents are happy. Many have taken to social networks to air their

views, the crux of many being that Christmas is, by it’s very nature, a religious festival. Others have described the move in stronger terms as “anti-Catholic”. The Education Ministry has commented that each school plans it’s own seasonal activities and these are usually agreed by school boards that includes representatives of parents and families.

Fire-Fighter Dispute Continues

By Simon Russell

THE fire brigades in the Vega Baja towns of Almoradi, Torrevieja and Orihuela are effectively on a work to rule basis as they refuse to do overtime. This is the second such action in an ongoing dispute over what they believe to be a lack of staff. Due to the age of the existing force and other factors they feel that around 100 new recruits will be needed in 2017 to offer a safe and comprehensive service for both the fighters and public. However Alicante government has

made no official response to their concerns. Currently there are plans for around 30 new vacancies to be offered next year.

Unplanned Caving Adventure for Pensioner

By Simon Russell

AN 80 year old man was rescued from a cave near the Banos de la Reina at El Campello on November 20 after falling down a slope and becoming trapped. Fortunately for him a man and his son were nearby and witnessed the incident. They were able to hold onto the man while the waves were breaking around him and the emergency services were contacted. A special Guardia Civil unit was quickly on the scene and managed to extricate the pensioner who had minor but not life threatening injuries. The Guardia praised the efforts of the passersby whose brave actions may well have saved the man’s life.

Fiestas Help With Tourism Boost

By Simon Russel

HOSBEC, the Benidorm hotel and hospitality representative, has confirmed that November has seen the town make the anticipated strong start for tourist traffic. Hotel occupation for the first half of the month was 85%, just over 4% better than last year. The good weather and the annual Benidorm Fiestas provided a boost in what is a very quiet month for many beach

resorts. In fact HOSBEC described the town’s fiesta as the second biggest festival of this type for the Brits after the famous Notting Hill Festival. The occupancy rate for the second part of the month is expected to dip to around 70% but is expected to rise again over the Christmas and New Year period when, once again, the town has many attractions for tourists and residents alike planned.

Post-fire Committee Sits For the First Time

By Spencer Williams

By Simon Russell

THE roundtable group set up to address the issues arising from the fires in September that devastated 450 hectares of local forestry in the municipality, met in Callosa d’en Sarria on 17 November. The group will be looking at two main areas, regeneration of fire damaged land and prevention of future incidents. Chaired by Delia Alonso, Valencia’s Director General of Forest Fire Prevention, the group included landowners effected by the fire, emergency services, and environmental officers among others. The initial meeting focused

on the report just published by the Centre for Environmental Studies on the impact of the fire. Issues such as the clearance of hazardous debris, measures to prevent erosion and restoration of the historic terraces were all discussed. Work groups have now been agreed and put in place and short term

measures agreed with further meetings scheduled.

Fishy looking Small Fry Seized By Simon Russell

INSPECTIONS at Villajoyosa’s fishing port have resulted in the impounding of more than 500 kilos of undersized fish that was for sale there. The action was undertaken by Seprona, the wildlife protection section of the Guardia Civil, as the sale of undersized fish is illegal due to clearly laid out fishery rules regarding size. It is believed that the fishermen and sellers involved were purposely selling the undersized fish on the quayside rather than in

properly registered premises and were therefore fully aware that their sale was illegal. As

the fish was still fresh it was distributed to local charities rather than being destroyed.

Zombies Back In Town

By Simon Russel

One of the twists is that the town itself becomes the set for the adventure with the Town Hall turning over specific buildings and areas for the event. An overnight activity, appropriately enough, things kick off at 11pm and run until 5am.

Vicente Sanz, from the company running the event, says that changes and improvements made in the twenty one cities where they have subsequently run the event will be incorporated in the Altea night, which they also see as a form of homecoming, being back where it

all started. About a thousand people took part in the last Zombie day so expect a big turnout. If you are interested in taking part, as a zombie or survivor, you can find more information on www.lastzombieday.com or the town hall website.

Mr Puig was greeted by members of the Roman Hispania Cultural Association dressed as Roman soldiers and civilians to reflect the buildings treasure trove of belongings from this era. The museum has a laboratory specifically to restore Roman archaeological pieces found underwater. There is also currently a display of pieces specially selected to show the history of Villajoyosa including Phoenician gold necklaces

LGBT Rights To Be Recognised

BENIDORM looks set to become one of the first town councils in Spain to approve an official LGBT municipal plan. The proposed text has been approved by a special commission and will include measures to combat hatred and ensure full equal rights for the lesbian, gay and transgender community in the town. La Cruz Road Block

By Simon Russel

BENIDORM’S city hall are considering closing the access road to La Cruz de Serra Gelada to traffic. A group representing the environment, the Serra Gelada Natural Park and local residents amongst others met with the council recently to discuss the feasibility of the proposal. There appeared to be general agreement that the restriction

would benefit the beauty spot and the proposal is now with the town’s technical team to make a final report on the practicality of the closure. It was noted that the Town Hall is already working to improve signage and the general image of La Cruz de Serra despite a lack of staff in the park itself..

LOCKDOWN

Escape Room Benidorm By Spencer Williams

It was with a certain amount of fear and trepidation that three ‘’Soldiers’’ from Planet Buzz squadron, entered the zombie infested, Lockdown bunker (situated on, Calle Ibiza 6, Benidorm). It was Friday evening, and the day was giving way to night. Our nerves were as brittle as a zombie’s skull. Our task, which was explained to us, in our induction, by Tania Sotto, and her crew, move from room to room, solving cranial bursting challenges and clues, on route to the safety zone and freedom. Armed to the dentures, we were hustled into one of the mazes. These can be changed for repeat visitors. Avoiding blood thirsty zombies, we completed all of our obstacles, and emerged, unscathed with 20 seconds of our allotted hour to spare. To finish your experience there is a Team photo, complete with props, against a green screen creating a fantastic backdrop image just like you were in a Hollywood movie, which is emailed to the team and added to LockDown’s face book page. Drunken Tourist Attacked by Cabbie During Fiestas

By Simon Russel

POLICE have reported an incident at Benidorm’s recent fiestas where a British man had his nose broken by an angry taxi driver. It appeared the

man had been drinking heavily and fell asleep in the taxi during the early hours. When he woke up for some reason he refused to pay his fare and after an altercation the well

lubricated Brit ended up with a broken nose. The Guardia Civil quickly tracked down the cabbie who had fled the scene, and arrested him close to the site of the incident.

all, this was a fantastic team building exercise, and a great way to kick of an evening out in Benidorm, it is highly recommended as if you have never partaken in an escape room it is an experience you will always remember. It’s not just for lads either, although I think high heels would be a mistake! It really is something that everyone can enjoy and they are already in the process of a whole new escape game which will be open soon. Overall the game makes you feel more alive, than walking dead, it’s really worth getting locked in, Lock Down. Give Tania a call, on 865 67 41 89 to book your escape! .... Just watch behind you.

Six Nations to Introduce Bonus Points System A bonus points system will be introduced in the Six Nations next year, the competition’s council has announced. This system will be implemented on a trial basis for the 2017 Championship - as well as in the Women’s Six Nations and the U20 Six Nations - and will be reviewed after the tournaments. The Six Nations Council made the decision to trial a bonus points system in an attempt “to encourage and reward try scoring and attacking play”. Competition points will be awarded in all 2017 Six Nations matches based on four criteria: 1. A team winning a game shall be awarded four match points or (if it scores four tries or more in the process) five match points. 2. A team that loses the match shall be awarded no match points or (if it scores four tries or more in the process or loses by a margin of seven points or fewer) one match point or (if it scores four tries or more in the process and loses by a margin of seven points or fewer) two match points. 3. Teams that draw a match shall each be awarded two match points and any of them that scores four tries or more in the process shall be awarded a further one match point. 4. A team that wins all five of its matches (a Grand Slam) shall be awarded a further three match points. A similar formula is already used in other major rugby union events like the World Cup, Rugby Championship, Aviva Premiership and Guinness PRO12, while the three

additional points awarded for winning all five games removes the unlikely possibility of a country having a 100 per cent record and still not being crowned champions. Six Nations chief executive John Feehan said: “The drama and excitement of the last weekend of the Six Nations is unique and is, more often than not, driven by a number of teams on equal Championship points all competing for first place on the table. “It is important for us to ensure that any bonus-point system which is implemented would not, in any way, take away from this unique dynamic. ”At the same time, we are also conscious that we must reward try scoring and an attacking style of play that will deliver more tries and greater rewards for fans and players alike. “We are very excited about the potential that this new development will bring to the Championships and we look forward to trialling it next February and March.” The 2017 Six Nations starts on February 4 with Scotland taking on Ireland at Murrayfield and England facing France at Twickenham.

Owen No Longer Liverpools Youngest Ever Goalscorer

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits teenager Ben Woodburn has to be handled carefully after he became the club’s youngest goalscorer. The academy graduate, at 17 years and 45 days, beat Michael Owen’s record by 98 days to write his name into Anfield history books with an emphatic 81stminute finish in the 2-0 win over Leeds in the EFL Cup quarter-final. Woodburn had only made his firstteam debut in Saturday’s victory over Sunderland - and that was barely a minute at the end of the match - but he is highly-rated within the club. The fact he was born in Chester, like Owen, will only lend itself to comparisons - something Klopp is keen to avoid so early in his career. “It’s all good. We know what Ben’s capable of,” Klopp said. ”My first job is to help these boys be the best. There’s a lot of things to do, especially to keep the public away as long as possible. That’s quite a difficult thing to do. “But we only bring him when we want to use him. That means when he is on the pitch, he is absolutely allowed to score goals. “I am really happy with him, the only problem is I am a little afraid about you

(the press). ”We know how to handle the situation. I can say whatever I want but if he scores goals, it’s difficult to stay cool from your side, no problem. “Nothing what we say here is important enough to help Ben Woodburn or myself.” Woodburn’s strike, and a second in as many matches for Divock Origi, offered a welcome positive after a difficult few days in which Liverpool lost Philippe Coutinho for at least five weeks with ankle ligament damage, having already been without Danny Ings (knee) and Daniel Sturridge. Lucas and Divock Origi react to Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Leeds Lucas and Divock Origi react to Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Leeds “Tonight it was very important that we could have him (Woodburn) on the bench and bring him in the game because of our situation in the offensive department,” added Klopp, whose side booked a record 17th League Cup semifinal and their fourth in the last six years, having lost the final to Manchester City last season. “So it’s very important for us today and he scored a goal, that makes it much more enjoyable.”

World Champ Rosberg Retires The Mercedes driver made his announcement during the FIA world champions gala on Friday in Vienna, just five days after securing his title. Rosberg, 31, clinched his first title in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, beating Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. The German said that, having achieved his childhood dream, he felt it was the right time to stop. “For me it is a very special day to receive the trophy. This evening is going to be amazing but for another reason: I want to take the opportunity to announce the end of my F1 career,” said Rosberg. “Since I was six years old I had a clear dream, that was to become F1 world champion and it was very clear in my mind, whatever I could think, I have achieved it. I will remember forever. “I have achieved this childhood dream now, so I’m not willing to do more commitment. I don’t want to do it again. I have decided to follow my heart. “I want to call it a day and go on to other things and it feels right to me. “I feel excited, my wife is excited. Thank you very much for the support these

years.” Rosberg said that his only regret regarding the announcement was that it put his Mercedes team in a “difficult situation” - the German having originally been signed through to 2018. “For me personally [the decision] is not that difficult, it feels right,” Rosberg said. “The only thing that makes it [difficult], I am putting my racing family into a challenging situation and that is the hardest part for me.” Elaborating on how the idea to retire came about, Rosberg said: “It was after Suzuka. In Suzuka, it became my title to lose - and that is when the pressure really started also, and when I started to think about this: ‘If I do achieve my childhood dream, then it would be great to end there.’ “This year was the best I can be, definitely. In the preparation and anything, I put everything into it. “I achieved what I set out for. It is clear from six years old, starting off in gokart, it was dream already, inspired by my

Terry Wanted in China

Chelsea captain John Terry is reportedly pondering a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League to work under Gus Poyet at Shanghai Shenhua when his contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season. The centre-back has been limited to just seven appearances in all competitions this season due to various injuries, while Antonio Conte has settled on a three-man defence with Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill. Former Chelsea midfielder Poyet was appointed by

Shenhua on Tuesday, and it is believed that he will consider making a move for the exEngland international. According to the London Evening Standard, Terry is open to the idea but the financial offer will play a major role in his decision, as will Chelsea’s stance because the 35-yearold would prefer to stay at the Premier League club. The report adds that there has not been any indication from Conte that Terry, who has been a Chelsea player since 1998, will be offered a new deal.

David Haye appeared to throw a punch at Tony Bellew during a badtempered press conference for next year’s grudge fight. The bitter rivals will meet at The O2 on March 4, live on Sky Sports Box Office, and Haye seemed to aim a blow at Bellew as tensions boiled over when they posed for pictures. Security staff quickly stepped in to separate the feuding pair before they could become embroiled in a physical confrontation. Haye had earlier mocked the Liverpudlian by claiming he could knock out Bellew while “drunk out of my head”.

“You and your whole team are going to get destroyed,” said Haye. ”Whatever I do now in my life is irrelevant because on fight night, you’re going to get knocked out. “I could go clubbing every night. From now until the fight... get smashed out of my mind every night, and I’ll still knock you out. “I will turn up, drunk out of my head, and you’ll get knocked out.” Bellew is the current WBC cruiserweight champion, but suggested he had to agree to a number of demands from Haye before the fight was finally made.

Gareth Southgate has been handed the England manager’s role on a permanent basis and will lead the Three Lions through qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and the European Championship two years later. Southgate had been in charge as a caretaker manager ever since Sam Allardyce left the job after being caught up in a newspaper sting in September. As interim boss 46-year-old

Southgate enjoyed two wins and a draw in three World Cup qualifying matches as well as a friendly draw with Spain and he believes the future is bright. He said: “I think there’s huge potential, I think there’s a lot of hard work ahead. I was really pleased that our performances progressed and improved as we went through those four games, as we were able to work in more detail with everybody. And I

think at all age groups there are exciting England players coming through.” The former Middlesbrough manager who played 57 times for England, has signed a four year deal with the FA, reportedly worth the equivalent of 2.3 million euros a year.
