22.

THERE was a strong police presence on the streets for the Three Kings parades in all of Spain’s major cities, triggered by the recent terrorist attacks in Berlin and Turkey. Any large crowd would always attract a police presence, and an estimated 200,000 people turned out to watch the Magi and their parade of animals, jugglers, dancers and multitude of floats in Alicante. However there was a noticeable step up in the police presence with many being armed and on high alert throughout the event which thankfully went

along without a hitch. Huge crowds also turned out in Valencia city for their spectacle which included thirty floats, eight bands, a massive

fireworks display - and a 40% increase in police presence from 2016. Almost every town in the region and across Spain would have had their

own parade, big or small, in what is the greatest night of the year for most Spanish children. by Simon Russell

Snow by the lorry-load

By Spencer WIlliams

THIS corner of Spain may have seen plenty of rain in recent weeks but in those areas where hopefully it would have fallen as snow the wet stuff has been in short supply. The Catalan ski resort of Baqueira-Beret has resorted to the unusual practice of literally shipping the snow to the slopes on lorries, bringing it down from higher parts of the mountains. No other resort in Spain uses this method, in fact in most ski resorts when it does snow the coverage tends to be across both

the higher and lower parts of the slopes. In Teruel, the skiing area closest to Valencia, most of the slopes and lifts are open for business though

snow coverage has been described as patchy - although of course conditions can change quickly. Always check skiing conditions before going if you can.

Poverty risk in Alicante towns

By Spencer WIlliams

JAVEA, Denia, Orihuela, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Elda are all Alicante towns described as having the most inhabitants (per capita) at risk of poverty. The qualifying criteria range from single person households with income under €8,000 per annum

to a household of four where the income is under €17,000 pa. Torrevieja has 36.6% of it’s population within these criteria, followed by Orihuela, Benidorm, Javea, Denia and Elda, all of which have over 30% of their population classed as at risk of poverty.

Towns with a high expatriate community figure prominently on the lists and there may be several factors behind this. This ranges from the general difficulty for foreigners to find well paid work to that fact that many expats may not

A 19 year old Ecuadorian national has voluntarily appeared before the Valencian courts after being sought by police since last July on sexual assault charges. Connected for free

By Simon Russell

ALICANTE is expecting to introduce free wi-fi in large parts of the city, hopefully starting in April this year. Over a period of just over a year from the initial rollout date the areas they plan to cover are Postiguet, the Mercado Central, Cigarreras,

the Tabarca island and parts of Santa Barbara. The firm supplying the wi-fi, Wificom, are able to do this for free as advertisements will be streamed on the service for users. Pedro de Gea, head of the Department of Commerce,

said that it is hoped to include the entire city within four to five years. De Gea also pointed out the significance of the inclusion of the Island of Tabarca to it’s residents and tourists as it has previously been isolated with regards to wi-fi coverage.

A Valencian man who featured on the reality TV show “Mujeres y Hombres y Viceversa” faces prosecution after his dog was so malnourished it had to be put down. It appears the man handed the dog into an animal protection centre in Paterna giving a false name and claiming

he had found the obviously poorly dog. The man, identified as Javi C, was later traced as the owner and he then claimed that the dog had been in the care of a friend. If found guilty of the charges the accused could face a sentence of up to a years imprisonment.

Murdered for their apartment

By Simon Russell

THE trial is set to start in Alicante of a couple accused of killing their elderly neighbour so they could occupy his apartment. The couple, a Dominican man and his Spanish partner, were about to be evicted from a dwelling in the same apartment block as the deceased. They were aware that the man lived alone and had no known friends or relatives and thought his disappearance would go unnoticed.

They allegedly entered the apartment of the man, who was in his seventies, and strangled him while he slept. The prosecution allege that the couple had even gone so far as to cherry pick the ground floor apartment as it would be suitable for the female accused who had mobility problems. Prosecution evidence includes possession of keys for the apartment and tapped phone conversations.

English most spoken foreign Second A&E centre for city on it’s way language in Spain By Simon Russell

OVER half of the Spanish admit that they cannot communicate in English - or nearly half of the Spanish can communicate in English depending on your outlook. Either way English remains very much the second language of Spain, with 28% describing themselves as fluent speakers followed by French at 9% with German and Portuguese only being spoken fluently by around 1% of the native population. Another 20% would not boast fluency but say they can communicate in English. Almost all school children

Tiger Mosquito fight underway

THE Department of Health in Elche has announced that a second PAS centre will be opening in March this year. The PAS (Punto de Atencion Sanitario or point of care) is very roughly equivalent to a British Accident and Emergency unit and will be incorporated into the Altabix health centre. The new facility will be open overnight from nine in the evening and is designed to ease the overflow of patients

from the existing unit in El Toscar. Elche Mayor, Carlos Gonzalez, also announced that the cities General Hospital will be receiving a complete reformation this year, work he described as long overdue.

By Simon Russell

THE recent heavy rains have increased the risk of tiger mosquitoes in the region due to additional lying water, a favoured habitat for the pests. Alicante City Council has announced a series of measures to prevent an outbreak of mosquitoes in

the area, which include a mix of education and practical measures such as the fixture of devices that prevent the laying of the creatures eggs. While the town halls can take various preventative measures the most common outbreaks are on private land, usually due to standing

water such as swimming pools, water troughs etc. While the peak time for the tiger mosquito is the summer, the egg laying cycle can begin in March or April depending on the weather and the unwanted insects start appearing shortly after.

Explosive discovery for dog walker

By Simon Russell

A woman walking her dog in Alicante was startled to find what looked like a hand grenade, especially as she was in the vicinity of a school. She reported the find to the police who confirmed that the item was indeed a hand grenade, albeit one that had badly deteriorated. The local Security Brigade immediately

cordoned off the area around the grenade, while a specialist from the bomb squad was then called who made the device safe. It appeared that the grenade was a Polish model, without a firing pin or safety lever, although what the grenade was doing in the area is unclear at this stage.

“Patriot” sparks terror alert

By Simon Russell

POLICE in Valencia were alerted to a possible jihadi terror attack on New Years Day after a man in combat dress and with his face covered was seen driving erratically through the city centre. When they stopped the car the man was in possession of two pistols as well as axes, a machete and ammunition. Upon closer questioning the man was identified as a 58 year old Spanish urban planning officer who has been suffering from psychiatric problems.

He claimed he was planning to test his pistols at a local woodland but had become disoriented in the traffic. He states that he is a Spanish patriot and former army reservist who has the right to bear arms to defend himself against attack. Police are keeping the man in detention while

they do checks on his background and deciding whether to level charges against him.

A woman was arrested in Valencia on New Years Day after allegedly offering her baby for sale, for €800, to a stranger who immediately reported the event to the police. The incident happened in a park near Avenida Pius XII where police traced and then detained the woman. THE Valencian Tourist Agency, with the full support of the Generalitat, has launched a legal action against property rental website Airbnb. They are focusing on the fact that they have a number of unregistered properties in theValencian Community despite warnings going back to 2015. The Tourist Agency is arguing that they have failed to regularise a number of properties on their books and are launching the action to protect those property owners who have done things by the book.

ALICANTE Town Hall have said there are no plans to reduce or even ban the bullfighting in the cities bullring this year. Rumours had been circulating that this was the case but Councillor for Infrastructure, Gloria Vara, said they were merely looking into ways of utilising the arena for events in addition to - but not instead of - bullfighting. The city wants to make the most of an important and well located space for a variety of cultural events and festivals. She also added it is not within the cities remit to control bullfighting as it is a state protected cultural event.

THE body of a man thought to be around 60 years old was found on 2 January at La Cantera beach in Alicante by a local resident walking in the area. The corpse was lying between two rocky areas on the beach and had no documentation or other clues as to who the victim was. The body has been removed from the area after the police conducted their initial forensic

More regulations for cyclists proposed

This would include the implementation of a points card where penalties are incurred for offences such as using bikes under the influence of drink or drugs or

other traffic violations. They have also suggested that bikes should have registration numbers again bringing them into line with other road users. However the president of Valencia’s Cycling Federation, Amadeo Olmos, disagrees, saying that this will discourage cyclists from taking part is what is a far healthier

CHURROS CON CHOCOLATE

These days, people are going gaga over churros con chocolate, normally a breakfast fare but is savored any time of the day. Crunchy on the outside but meltingly soft inside, freshly baked churros is like heaven on earth, so to speak, when dipped in a thick, almost gooey, chocolate sauce. It may seem difficult to make, but in truth it’s not. With only a few basic ingredients and simple steps, you can actually replicate your favorite commercial churros at home. The chocolate dip, which plays a big role in the eating experience, is also easy to do. Here’s the ultimate recipe to make your own churros at home, just like they were at the churrería stands. Of course, the difference here is price. Here you can make a whole batch for what is cost for a few. Once you make the churros, you can make the authentic chocolate dip to dunk them in. Ingredients: (Makes one platefull) Vegetable or Olive Oil 1 cup water 1/2 cup margarine or butter 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup all-purpose flour 3 eggs 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional) Prepare to fry the churros by heating oil in a pan (1 to 1&1/2 inches) to 360 degrees F.

To make churro dough, heat water, margarine and salt to rolling boil in 3-quart saucepan; stir in flour. Stir vigorously over low heat until mixture forms a ball, about 1 minute; remove from heat. Beat eggs all at once; continue beating until smooth and then add to saucepan while stirring mixture.

Spoon mixture into cake decorators’ tube with large star tip (like the kind use to decorate cakes). Squeeze 4-inch strips of dough into hot oil. Fry 3 or 4 strips at a time until golden brown, turning once, about 2 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. (Mix Sugar and the optional cinnamon); roll churros in sugar

or dump the sugar on the pile of churros, like the pros. That churro taste will take you right back to your favorite summer days walking the paseos of Spain. Note: REAL churros in Spain are made without cinnamon mixed with the sugar, but the cinnamon adds an extra nice flavor. Chocolate for Churro Dunking 4oz dark chocolate, chopped 2 cups milk 1 tbsp cornstarch (also known as cornflour and is the powder that causes the thickening) 4 tbsp sugar Place the chocolate and half the milk in a pan and heat, stirring, until the chocolate has melted. Dissolve the cornstarch in the remaining milk and whisk into the chocolate with the sugar. Cook on low heat, whisking constantly, until the chocolate is thickened, about five minutes. Add extra cornstarch if it doesn’t start to thicken after 5 minutes. Remove and whisk smooth. Pour and server in cups or bowls for dunking churros. Do not pour over churros, but use the mix for dunking churros after every bite. Served warm.

Monroes Pedreguer Restaurant Review

Monroes has been operating as a carvery since 1988 and although most people I speak to have heard of them not everyone has actually been and seen for themselves what great food, great service and a great atmosphere they have there - not to mention the unbeatable value for money. It is a genuine carvery offering homemade cooking of traditional British fayre. To welcome in the New Year Heidi and Sam have put together an amazing offer of the most tempting dishes for only 5 euros, yes 5 euros I am serious! Where else could you go and get home cooked fresh food for this price? Why you might ask.. well that’s exactly what I said and went along to meet with the couple to find out more. Sam said to me “Come on Marco you should know what January Sales are all about you’re the marketing guru”... well as much as I agree with Sam that marketing is my field of knowledge I still needed to see this amazing offer for myself. Heidi then showed me the offer of the day and between them they have produced a selection of some of my favorite winter warmers served throughout the week from 6pm. On Monday there are homemade pies,Tuesday is BBQ Chicken, “The Carvery” is on Wednesdays, Thursday is liver and onions, Fish and Chips on Friday and even Steak Strips in a pepper sauce on Saturday. The Carvery is also available every day, offering roast meats and fresh vegetables served with home made Yorkshire puds baked fresh and served straight from the oven. The carvery section is laid out on the hot counter with a great choice of fresh vegetables, mash and roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and a wonderful thick gravy. You get a generous por-

tion of hand carved meats, sliced and served onto your plate, and it always looks amazing. Personally, I like the beef rare in the center which is exactly what I got. There was no way I was going to see the owners without staying for a roast dinner, even though I have had a few more than usual over the festive period. I have to admit I couldn’t actually finish everything that was on my plate, although this wasn’t as easy as you might think given how tasty the food was, but because you can serve yourself the vegetables and potatoes it’s easy to put a little too much on your plate. My excuse is that the serving spoons are very large! Also a reminder if you didn’t know, Monroes also make their own desserts including chocolate brownies, apple crumble and Banofee Pie. My choice was Apple Crumble with Custard which I enjoyed immensely. A super menu deal is on offer including wine at only 9.95€ for a 3 course Carvery menu available Mon-

day to Saturday or two courses for 7.25€ (lunchtime only). Take my advice and make Monroes in Pedreguer a must for January and please mention each time you visit that you saw them in the Buzz Newspaper and you can pick up our next issue each time you visit them.

Keep Kids Safe Around Your Dog

Small children and dogs seem to go hand in hand. Boys and girls see puppies as huggable friends that are wonderfully cute plus furry. The truth, nevertheless, is that not all dogs are safe close to children. Children should be taught ways to respect puppies, and also to know that each dog is unique, with his or her own personality plus temperament. Educating children to respect dogs for who they are will greatly lower the number of dog attacks on children, which will probably bring peace of mind, and peaceful living, to all children and also parents. Each time discussing puppies, “temperament” means that the normal attitude as well as personality traits.

Breeds of dogs are proven to have certain temperaments, which usually allows people to understand each breed, however it does not stop there. Each individual dog will also have his or her own temperament, which dog owners will get to understand as they get to know their puppies. For example, puppies that are working canines are known for their working temperaments. They will probably be active, and not like to be still or quiet, mainly because their work demands these actions from them. In the event that you are picking a dog for your family, you must look beyond a dog’s size, as well as whatever grooming requirements it may have. It is very important also take into account the temperament of the dog. Have you got younger children? In that case you will probably want a calm, peaceful dog that will not Residencia canina y felina accidentally harm your desde/sin Boarding kennel & Cattery ce children when they are playing together. Have you got older children? Then you may find that an active dog is a better fit for your family, considering that older children can deal with the higher-level of play which an active RESIDENCIA CANINA Y FELINA dog will have. BOARDING KENNEL & CATTERY Consider also a dog’s possible need for Habitaciones individuales Individual rooms dominance. Dogs which Ozono Ozono want to be dominant Hilo musical Music will never be suitable for Calefacción Heated floor system families with young kids or babies. However, dogs Parques ajardinados Landscaped playgrounds that are too submissive Servicio a domicilio Free home delivery service may be frightened of noisy Admitimos todas las razas All types of dogs & cats allowed children of any age, and nip at them in defense. You will also want to consider how trainable a dog’s temperament is. Generally speaking, the more clever a dog is, the easier he is going to be to train. On the other hand, remember that

1977

an intelligent dog will also get bored if not presented with enough mental stimulation. This kind of boredom will bring about destructive behavior, as the dog tries to find the mental stimulation in his environment that his family is not offering him. When it comes to picking out a dog, it is usually much simpler to predict the temperament of pureblood dogs, for the reason that their breed’s general personality traits are known. Excellent dog breeders will be able to help choose a puppy dog for a family by matching up the demands of each and every family with the personalities of their pet dogs. Looking for your dog is just the start. The moment you bring your puppy home, you need to start schooling your children good behavior close to your new dog. You should not let your kids wake a sleeping dog, simply because this will probably take your dog by big surprise, what may end up in a bite. The phrase, “Let sleeping dogs lie” ought to be known and respected by all members of your family. Any time your dog eats, he needs to be left alone. Dogs are very protective of their food. If perhaps your boy or girl tries to take his food, he may aggressively attempt to protect it. That is true of dog food, however especially of bones. Educate your children to never approach a dog which is chewing a bone, whether it is your dog or someone else’s. With regards to someone else’s dog, it is far more important which you remind your children to behave and react respectfully. They ought to know that certain dogs are suspicious or perhaps fearful of strangers, and may bite anyone they do not know that gets near them. Adolescent kids might not have an innate fear of dogs, yet quite a few

young children do. Whenever dogs run at children, they may fully freak out, causing them to run from the dogs whilst screaming. This is totally the wrong thing to do, and also may cause an otherwise friendly approaching dog to all of a sudden become aggressive simply because the child is acting just as frightened prey. Teach kids of all ages the way to react to an approaching dog: To stand still, stay calm ( do not scream! ), as well as to not look the dog in the eyes. They additionally have to know what to do in case a dog knocks them over. They ought to roll into a ball, just like a pill bug, plus stay quiet and still. They need to stay in this way till the dog losses interest in them and leaves. They need to continue to stay quiet as they stand up, to avoid getting the dog’s interest back to them. Undoubtedly you already know that your dog ought to go through dog training. It is also essential to include children in this training, in case they are old enough to participate. The reason this is significant is due to the fact it can help your dog to view your children as ranking above him in his pack (your family). This will lead to your dog treating your children with much more respect than he would treat anyone he views as beneath him in rank. If perhaps you have kids and you take some time to think about a dog’s temperament just before choosing one, you are going a long way to making sure that your dog and young children will live safely as well as happily for a long time to come.

Alicante City

Alicante past present and future. Different civilizations have passed through these lands, leaving their mark which can be seen in all corners of this emblematic city. All of this adds to the appeal of this modern city with a primary focus on tourism, but also a special interest in industry and commerce. Alicante, situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, offers not only a great variety of services but also a wide range of cultural activities, with its museums, its festivals and its nature areas, in particular the Island of Tabarca (Mediterranean Marine Reserve). Alicante’s well-known climate and beaches make this a perfect city for spending a few pleasantly relaxing days away from it all.

Central Market

This building contains some modernist features and was built between 1911 and 1912 under the management of Juan Vidal Ramos over Balmes Square, over which there was still a part of the 18th century wall. With its rectangular shape, the Market mimics the layout of a basilica, with a circular appendix on the Southwest side covered by a semispherical dome called La Rotonda (the roundabout). The building is split into two floors, one of which is a semi-basement due to the irregular surrounding streets.

The front of the building was designed by Enrique Sánchez Sedeño and is presided by an impressive staircase surrounded by two emerging figures with decorative features. On 25th May 1938, the Mercado Central was hit during the worst bombing suffered by the city of Alicante during the Spanish Civil War, which resulted in 300 civilian victims. The Italian air force was responsible for that tragedy. All kinds of high-quality products can be bought at the Market, especially local fish and seafood, vegetables and fruit, as well as other typical local products. That is why the city’s top restaurants source their food from the Mercado Central.

profile on the south western slope, known as the Moor’s Face, which is best viewed from Postiguet Beach. The Museum of the city in Santa Barbara´s Castle “MUSA”, housed in the Castle itself, was included to this cultural offer and it explains in five theme rooms the history of the city of Alicante and their inhabitants. To descend down from the Santa Bárbara Castle take the route through Parque de La Ereta, along the mountainside. Its location and views trans-

17

Visitors can also access the castle via a lift built within the rockface opposite El Postiguet beach.

Tabarca Island

A visit to Tabarca island is an absolute must for visitors. Boats from the company Kontiki depart from the marina in Alicante several times a day during the summer months. In low seasons confirm timetables beforehand.

Santa Barbara Castle

visit to the Santa Bárbara Castle is highly recommended. Located atop Mount Benacantil, at a height of 166 metres, it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, with unbeatable views over the Bay of Alicante and on clear days you can see all the way to Tabarca Island. Such is its importance that during the 20th century it was declared a Monument of Historic and Artistic Importance and a Site of Cultural Interest. Here we can also find one of the most characteristic images of the city, a rock formation resembling a man’s

form it into a place of relaxation as well as a great meeting place. It also has a spectacular restaurant and, on the way down to the old town quarter, you can visit the picturesque, quintessentially Spanish Santa Cruz district. Another attractive option between the castle and the Santa Cruz district is walking along the remains of the walls that surrounded the Castle, which now end in the Santa Cruz district.

250x170mm

The journey takes around one hour from Alicante. The route will give you the opportunity to enjoy the coastline. Try one of the traditional fish stews on the terrace of one of the restaurants. Also, on the island, you will find nice little bays to swim in as well as a beach offering different facilities. If you decide to stay overnight on the island, there are also little hotels peppered along it.

Radio Station Has The Gall To Save Christmas

When Planet Benidorm Radio presenter Ian Bennett saw a post on a Facebook page he decided to find out more. He discovered that a Family from Herefordshire on Holiday in Benidorm had been stranded here for Christmas and were set to be all alone on Christmas Day Mark “Lenny” Lubuck , his wife Carole and Carole’s Mother Dorothy were enjoying a break and were due to fly back to The UK on the 20th of December when a few days into the holiday Lenny was rushed in to Clinica Benidorm with an infected Gall Bladder , an Emergency Operation took place to remove his Gall Bladder and a period of convalescing meant that all three of them would

be in Benidorm over the Christmas period missing all the Family Celebrations back in the U.K. With their Children and Grandchildren. With the Combined efforts of Planet Benidorm Radio, Grizzlys Restaurant and The Grantawish Charity the Three people had a family Christmas Day to remember. There was already a Fantastic Charity event planned on Christmas Day with an outside broadcast from Grizzlys Restaurant to raise much needed funds for a 4 month old Baby Girl called “OLAYA” who has Brittle Bone Disease. The Family were invited along and made to feel a part of the Celebrations on this Special day. Lenny posted this on Facebook when he found out that he had been

invited to Grizzlys for Christmas Day “Merry Christmas everyone. Just had the news that we’re flying back on the 27th so that would be Christmas buggered up for us except..... I posted on Benidorm radio FB page to thank them for keeping me sane and everyone else who have helped us and now have been invited to their Christmas party. Overwhelmed by the kindness out there in what can be a terrible world for some. Once again merry Christmas everyone. See ya soon”

The Day proved to be a huge Success with a Fun time , a Full Restaurant and Three People stranded in Benidorm made to feel a part of a Very Special day and over 400€ raised towards The OLAYA Fund.

Honoured for tireless charity work

THE Points of Light award was launched in the UK in 2014 to recognise outstanding individual volunteers and a local British expatriate has now been honoured with the award, the first time it has been given to an expat in Spain. The recipient was Candida Wright - Candy to everyone who knows her - and recognised in particular her current role as president of HELP Denia and Marina Alta, a charity she has been helping out for thirty years. Help now has 200 active members and the charity plays a vital role in many peo-

ple’s lives when they are needed, helping out with such things as interpreting, transport, anything that can help people who are struggling for health or other reasons. Help is far from the full extent of Candy’s charitable work as she is also president of the Careline Theatre Group as well as helping out at men’s and women’s shelters in the region. British Prime Minister Theresa May wrote her personal congratulations to Candy saying “You have dedicated an extraordinary amount of time to local

charity work in Spain. In particular your work with HELP has been instrumental in supporting the charity to grow and extend it’s services to even more people in need.” Candy said she was very excited by the award and while volunteering at Denia Hospital just this week she was touched by the amount of well wishers that came up to personally congratulate her. In a typically selfless comment she also said that it was good to see

the expatriate British community being recognised for their good works in light of the recent Brexit events, in a good news story that many Spanish media outlets had picked up on.

Spanish Property Prices Increase By 0.8% YOY, But Recovery Pace Varies According to Tinsa (real estate appraisal company), the average housing prices in Spain increased by 0.8% in Q4 2016, marking the end of a good year, which is expected to continue in 2017 with a slight upward trend and moderate growth. The regions where prices grew the most were Catalonia (+7.2% YOY), Madrid (+5.2% YOY) and the Basque Country (+4.3%). Prices in the Canary Islands (2.8%) and Andalusia (2%) also grew above the Spanish average. Meanwhile, the regions that registered YOY price decreases were Murcia (-4.8%), Castile and LeĂłn (-3.9%) and the Balearic Islands (-3.1%). In terms of provinces, price increases were led by Barcelona (+8.4% YOY), Palencia (+7.8%) and Gipuzkoa (+7.4%). Meanwhile, Huelva and Lleida were in negative territory, with respective drops of 6.9% and 6.5%. There are three capitals that stand out for having registered a price increase of more than 10% in the peri-

od analysed: San Sebastian (12.1%), Bilbao (11.6%), and Barcelona (11%). However, among the capitals that have not yet finished the downward adjustment of prices are Leon (-11.1%), Murcia (-7.3%) and Valladolid (-6.6%). Affordability ratios keep improving Tinsa’s report also shows that the average buyer needed six years of salary to purchase a home in Spain, two year less than in 2007-08 and four months less than the figure from two years ago, but still above the four-year rate that is considered optimal. A Spanish family would have to allocate 21.5% of their gross income in order to make the mortgage payments in the first years of the loan, according to the analysis. This has also improved from the 33% that was required in 2013 and the 42% registered pre-crisis. Another trend highlighted is the generalised reduction in average sales times, from ten months to 9.9 months. Here again, the trend varies widely by region.

The shortest average selling times were seen in Ceuta and Melilla, with an average of 2.8 and 4.9 months, respectively. These were followed by the provinces of Madrid, at 5.7 months, Las Palmas (6.8 months), and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (6.8 months). Cantabria (18.6 months), Segovia (16.2 months) and Avila (15.4 months) were the provinces with the longest terms in Q4. Only in Segovia (16.2), Murcia (11.6), Teruel (9.2) and Soria

(8.3) have the average sales time increased over the previous quarter. The terms are much shorter in the two large Spanish capitals, where they barely exceed four months. While in Madrid it takes 4.3 months on average to sell a home, in Barcelona the average time is 4.4 months. Valencia is the only one of the five largest Spanish cities where this figure exceeds a year, at 12.9 months.

THIS WEEKS

ARIES

Down

25

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Your fire burns brightly this week and you’ve much more to offer than people first think. The weekend helps you with a reality check, and the cosmos helps you clear the way ahead for a fresh start in love or friendship. Don’t put absolutely everything under the microscope. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) It’s not what you say but how you say it this week, and people will pull you up on it if you don’t, and you’ll be very drawn to this kind of combative attitude and a battle of wills could ensue.

GEMINI

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) Seeking the limelight and basking in it are two different things this week. Call upon your friends, as they’ll keep you on the right track. You’ll be more sensitized by the weekend because you’re tuning in to emotions. Whatever happens at home is for your benefit.

CANCER

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Single? The game’s afoot, and you’re going to stand up and be counted here. You’re offered a way to cut through so much confusion, and any romantic connections get strengthened this weekend as love planet Venus aids and abets your sense of the dramatic.

LEO

VIRGO

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) All that glitters isn’t gold, despite what is presented to you as such this week. Look out for a cryptic clue, or a pointer, rather than hard facts. The weekend’s sky tells you to look very much towards who you are, what you want, and where you’re going. VIRGO (August 24th-Sept 23rd) People may try to play games but you’ll be the one in control. You’re going to be shredding and cutting and changing aspects of your life that you no longer want or need. It’s very important that you keep it real, however. You’ll know where you stand in a friendship by the end of the week also

LIBRA

SCORPIO

LIBRA (Sept 24th-Oct 23rd) Flashes of flirtation can be yours if you put your head above the parapet. I know you’ve a lot of work on right now, including decision making, but other people want your attention too. Someone pulls you into a sense of awakening. You can see through walls where love is concerned. SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd) You’re sexy, sophisticated and secretive, but you’re also level headed, and this combo gives you an edge and an advantage this week. If you’re in a confused place by the weekend, you just can’t go wrong by applying more reason and less emotion. But who will be the winner in the end? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st) Dynamic, direct and slightly playful pretty much sums you up this week. These are the qualities you possess, so why hide them away from the rest of the world?

SAGITTARIUS

CAPRICORN

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th) Are you power mad? I don’t think so, and if others do, then they just don’t get you. It’s time to set the records straight. Beneath everything there’s a bubbling sensation of fun going on and my advice to you is to just enjoy it. Fight someone’s corner at the weekend.

AQUARIUS

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb 19th) Up, up and away, as the song goes. Yes, you just want to be free this week - or stick your head in the clouds. But Venus won’t allow that. You’re looking good, so why hide it away? Single? You’re drawn to a highbrow nature, but you need a cuddle like everybody else.

PISCES

PISCES (Feb 20th-March 20th) Do you know what you want? Others don’t seem to know. You may have to repeat yourself this week as some people just won’t get you. Mercury and the moon help you identify what you want in your life to make you feel contented. Love well…I’d say it’s open season.

THE FACTS ABOUT INSTALLING A SOLAR ENERGY GRID-CONNECTED ELECTRICITY SYSTEM Electricity bills have increased by an average of 20% each year over the past 5 years and the cost is likely to increase by similar amounts over the next few years.

years. Both the solar panels and the inverters used by Solar in Spain are guaranteed for 25 years. Only the very best quality equipment will cope with the harsh environment.

Do I need permission from my utility company to install a system in my property?

Does solar energy only work on sunny days?

Yes you do. This is very important and must not be overlooked. Permissions need to be obtained before the installation takes place. Every grid-connected electricity system needs authorisation from your electricity supplier and the Spanish Government. Iberdrola is currently issuing fines for unauthorised installations so it is very important that your installation is completed correctly.

What is the life expectancy of a solar grid-connected electricity system? A well designed solar system will easily last for 25-30

No. Solar panels do not need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate electricity on cloudy days. However, the stronger the sunshine the more electricity is produced.

What happens to the electricity that is produced but not used? We can install equipment in your property that ensures 100% of your solar energy production is consumed at the property. This maximises the financial return of your solar installation. If you decide you want to export electricity Iberdrola will buy back any solar elec-

tricity that is sent back to the grid.

Do I have to pay tax to the Government if I install a system? In 2013 the government

published a draft proposal which proposed a tax on electricity. This draft proposal was against European Union directives and was met with enormous opposition. On 9th October 2015 the Spanish Government updated this

JS

draft proposal stating that grid connected solar installations that produce less than 10kW per hour will not be taxed. This is excellent news for home owners as it has removed the threat of any type of solar tax.

BREXIT UPDATES

Fewer Britons buying property in Spain after Brexit vote

There has been a sharp decline in British demand for property in Spain since the EU referendum, according to the latest figures from the Spanish Association of Land Registrars. The data reveals that the number of British property purchases registered with the Land Registry fell by 16% year-onyear in the third quarter, and the signs are that the Q4 figures could be even worse. A separate survey conducted by

Spanish Property Insight suggests a big overall drop in British buyer activity, especially in the top two destinations of the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. Mark Stuklin of Spanish Property Insight commented: “To get a better idea of the impact in the months since the British voted to leave the EU I’ve carried out a survey of property professionals in different parts of Spain including estate agents, buying agents, lawyers, mortgage brokers and

Brexit Could Stop All Flights From The UK THE pro-Brexit Change Britain group have claimed that a “hard Brexit” from the European Union will create 400,000 jobs in the UK. This is based on prospective trade deals with non-EU countries such as India, the US and China that would not have been possible within the current EU trade framework. However in the latest round of claim and counter claim leading economists have criticised these figures. They accuse Change Britain of looking only at the possible job creation areas without taking into account jobs in danger from the exit. They also feel that rather than increasing the chance of new trade deals, leaving the EU will actually make new deals less likely, while the UK will also lose the benefit of existing trade agreements.

The Change Britain statistics were described as “basically junk” and “entirely fictional” among other things. However Change Britain are standing by their claim, saying that a number of countries have already expressed an interest in striking free trade agreements with the UK.

surveyors, working in Barcelona, the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, Valencia, Costa del Sol, and the Balearics, answering questions about the market between July and October. I got 22 responses back in October and November answering questions on British buyer interest, sales, budgets, concerns, and vendor behaviour. “Despite variations between regions and price segments, the overall picture was one of a big decline in British buyer interest in

the months leading up to, and just after the referendum. However, there are also some signs that British buyer interest might now have stabilised at a lower level, helped by a bit of a recovery in the pound, though it is still too early to tell.” “I have also noticed that some Spanish property companies have decided to drastically scale back or even stop marketing in the UK, which is just another reflection of the Brexit impact,” he added.

Sterling weakness continues

Last week’s currency movements could potentially be a preview of what to expect for 2017. The US dollar showed sensitivity to Fed announcements after the release of December’s FOMC meeting minutes. Meanwhile, Sterling remained on the back foot and performed poorly in most currency pairings for the majority of the week. This was due to Brexit related headlines about the difficulties that lie ahead for the UK in its EU negotiations. Sterling weakness continues this morning, whilst, EURUSD is starting the week with little change from where it closed last Friday. The main focus today will be on Theresa May after suggestions that the UK will give up its single market membership in Brexit negotiations. UK participation in the European customs union is also in question. In response to Theresa May’s comments, Steve Baker of the Tory party actually stated: “This is a welcome clarification of a sensible position by the PM. We won’t be clinging on to bits of EU membership. The best outcome for the UK is an ambitious trade deal plus control over our laws,

trade policy and borders. The PM’s interview is great news for the UK.” The week ahead will be sparse on macroeconomic data. In regards to the US dollar, the main release of note is Retail Sales data for December due out Friday afternoon. After a disappointing November figure, sales are expected to have put in a stronger performance during December, which should help to lift the dollar. Regarding the Eurozone, German GDP for 2016 and Eurozone unemployment for November are the only highlights, meaning that the euro may not get much movement from the macroeconomics this week. It’s a similar story in the UK, with monthly and industrial production data due out on Wednesday; but overall, Sterling remains vulnerable to further Brexit developments.

Flooding has knock on effect for grocers

COMPANIES that specialise in supplying Spanish fruit and vegetables to northern European retailers are anticipating a supply problem arising from the recent floods in southern Spain. Verfru Europe, which supplies mainly to Belgium and the Netherlands said this week “In the south of Spain mostly lettuce, endive and spinach were lost in the flooding. Broccoli prices are also 30-40% higher than last year as it cannot stand in water. Generally prices of outdoor vegetables are much higher”. Grocers and suppliers across Europe are

reporting similar problems and a price hike seems inevitable, both here and abroad.

Leaving the family

ONE of Valencia’s best known businesses, the Lladro porcelain company, is being sold after being family owned since it’s inception in 1952. At it’s last shareholders meeting the decision was made to put the company up for public sale. This has come as no great surprise as in the face of falling sales they have been looking for buyers and investors. 2015 sales were €35 million compared to their peak time when sales reached as much as €180 million annually. The decline has been ongoing for over a decade and suffered badly in the recession and in recent years operations have been cut back and staff let go. The current owners are Juan, Jose

and Vicente Lladro and their children who it seems will be the final Lladros in charge of the business. The business is based in Tavernes Blanques, often dubbed “Porcelain City” as a reminder of how much Lladro dominates the local area.

Trump causes concern at Ford City PROTECTIONIST comments from US President elect Donald Trump are causing worries about planned future investments at Ford’s giant plant at Almussafes, just outside Valencia. He has been on the attack against American firms who are investing and creating jobs outside of the US, something which many believe led to Ford cancelling a planned new plant in Mexico last week. €60 million is earmarked for

expansion plans at “Ford City” as the Almussafes operation is known. Although nothing official has been said, there are worries that Ford will come under pressure to spend some or all of this cash in Ford’s home country. However, Ford has sound financial reasons for having many operations outside of the US and time will tell if Trump is willing to follow through on his threats once he takes office on 20 January.

Dieselgate British motorists sue

Ten thousand Volkswagen owners who feel they were misled into buying polluting cars are seeking £3000 (R50 000) each in compensation – a total of £30 million (R500m). The figure could exceed £3.6 billion if VW eventually has to pay £3000 for each of the 1.2 million cars including Audis, Skodas and Seats affected by the emissions scandal in the UK. The VW emissions scandal

involved around 11 million cars worldwide. The UK class action surrounds the fact that drivers paid a premium price for what they thought were clean diesel cars. In fact emissions of NOx gases – a combination of the pollutants nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide – were far higher than the company stated. NOx gas emissions are associated with, among other things, childhood asthma and are linked

to 23 000 premature deaths every year in the UK. People who bought the vehicles say they should be compensated for over-paying for a polluting car. Rather than offering compensation in the UK, VW is recalling all the vehicles involved for what it calls a ‘fix’. The legal case is being spearheaded by Harcus Sinclair UK for a consortium of law firms including Slater and Gordon.

Lawyers will allege that the affected vehicles passed official emissions tests only because their engines were fitted with a ‘defeat device’ using cheat software which reduces NOx emissions under test conditions. Environmental engineers exposed VW’s cheating in September 2015. VW Group UK said it could not comment for legal reasons.

Worrying trend on road deaths

RECENTLY released figures have confirmed 116 people died on roads in the Valencian Community in 2016, an increase from the 97 fatalities in 2015 which was itself an increase on the 87 in 2014. Serious injuries also rose significantly, up from 22 to 51, while minor injuries also increased by around 30%. 40 of the deaths occurred in Alicante province, compared to 33 the previous year. Fatalities in Castellon had doubled from 20 to 31 while in Valencia province figures rose only slightly from 44 deaths in 2015 to 45 last year.

Ten years without traffic lights IN 2002 the Valencian town of Xirivella voted to take the unusual step of switching off all the town’s traffic lights, a system that has been fully operational since 2006. The plan was to prioritise pedestrians while also improving the flow of traffic for vehicle users. Accordingly over 500 zebra crossings were installed in the town although all are dependant on road users stopping for pedestrians without a red or orange light warning them. Ten years on the initiative has been dubbed a success with accidents reducing by 60% and the town,

whose population is around 30,000, has one of the lowest road accident rates in the region for it’s size. The scheme was backed up with other measures such as bringing in lower speed limits throughout the area and many larger cities are now looking into the Xirivella model with the possi-

bility of introducing it into their own traffic control systems.

Fake policeman drives into trouble

A man who was stopped by the local police in Seville compounded his offence by impersonating a police officer. He was originally seen travelling at excessive speed in a residential area and appeared to try and run over one of the police when he drove into their breathalyser security zone. Upon being stopped

he claimed he was a Guardia Civil agent on duty - however the police shield he showed was clearly a fake. When finally breathalysed the driver was found to be five times over the alcohol limit and as well as drink driving he has been charged with dangerous driving plus impersonating a police officer.

Forest fire work continues By Simon Russell

THE first week in January marked the completion of the replacement of the 680 metres of water pipes on Cumbre del Sol damaged in last September’s fires. The work, centred around the Girasol area of the urbanization, cost €52,000, all funded by the Benitatxell Town Hall. The 81 fire hydrants in the area, vital to

the control of the fires, have also been checked and repaired where applicable. The Generalitat has reiterated it’s fire prevention guidelines which include not having trees within 10 meters of a property, regular clearings in the wooded sites, pruning back of trees and removal of foliage etc from the ground.

Help with the local language By Simon Russell

DENIA city council has been awarded a grant of €15,500 to help cover the cost of promoting Valenciano in the municipality. The grant comes from the Directorate for Language Policy and the Department of Education. As well as education the money is set to cover such things as signage, cultural activities, language awareness campaigns and

THE Guardia Civil raided four shops in Benidorm and removed over 600 items of sportswear that are believed to be counterfeit. The raid took place early in the new year and three men and one woman of Indian origin have been arrested and charged with breach of intellectual property rights. The final total of 664 items seized included fake Barcelona FC and Real Madrid shirts as well as various other items from brands such as Nike and Adidas. Benidorm vice ring broken up

By Simon Russel

THE arrest of a prostitute in Bilboa led police on an unlikely trail to Benidorm and culminated in the release of seven young women who were being held captive and forced into prostitution there. The young woman detained in Bilbao in the north of the country told police about the Benidorm connection after being detained by them and promised protection. It appears that a well organised Nigerian gang had been operating between the two cities. The gang was led by three women who specialised in convincing young Nigerian women to move to Spain for a better life

before trapping them in a ring of vice once they arrived here, often by threatening the girls family back in Nigeria. Bilbao appears to have been the base for the operation and once arriving there the victims were registered as asylum seekers to help legitimise their status. Other methods used to ensure the women’s compliance included physical violence and even the threat of voodoo against the largely uneducated women. The gang leaders face a number of charges including people trafficking, prostitution and various financial crimes.

Low Cost Festival not as low cost as it could be

By Simon Russel

BENIDORM city council is planning to look into the costs incurred by the annual Low music festival, previously the Low Cost Festival. While undoubtedly a major source of tourism, and therefore income, for the city, some within the council feel that some of the costs could be more fairly shared with the event organiser. For example the city currently picks up the bill for the post festival cleanup operation. The council plans to approach event

organisers Producciones Baltimore to look into some possible re-negotiation of costs. Last year the Low attracted 75,000 festival goers and generated an estimated €14 million for Benidorm.

Costa Cobras RFC Great Start To The New Year

Costa Cobras RFC towards the end of the year had to move training grounds, but it was for the better as it has given us a permanent place to train and a central base in the area for the club to move forwards in leaps and bounds, thanks to the support of San Fulgencio town hall and Vicente. In the middle of December we were very fortunate to have a local contact with San Fulgencio thanks to one of our new members, Luke, and since then we have not looked back. We started off with few players training and every week we have seen more and more people coming training from juniors, an eleven year old who has never played before, to experienced junior and senior players, so we have a great mix of experience and non experienced players. Even more players will be joining

us this week and looking really good for putting teams into the beach rugby tournaments and with the numbers improving as we are looking forward to putting a team in the Valencia league next season at this rate. We are now training at the football ground in San Fulgencio on Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00 and then meeting up at Power Pub in the town after training and using this is our club house. All the players are training at the same time, but once we get more juniors and seniors we will be doing two separate sessions. The second half was fiercely fought with fortunes swinging both ways, however La Vila maintained persistent pressure culminating in a try by Jara which he then converted. At the end the Barcelona side let themselves down by having two of their players yellow carded but La Vila were unable to take advantage and the score remained the same 23-7. World Champ Rosberg Retires The Mercedes driver made his announcement during the FIA world champions gala on Friday in Vienna, just five days after securing his title. Rosberg, 31, clinched his first title in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, beating Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. The German said that, having achieved his childhood dream, he felt it was the right time to stop. “For me it is a very special day to receive the trophy. This evening is going to be amazing but for another reason: I want to take the opportunity to announce the end of my F1 career,” said Rosberg. “Since I was six years old I had a clear dream, that was to become F1 world champion and it was very clear in my mind, whatever I could think, I have achieved it. I will remember forever. “I have achieved this childhood dream now, so I’m not willing to do more commitment. I don’t want to do it again. I have decided to follow my heart. “I want to call it a day and go on to other things and it feels right to me. “I feel excited, my wife is excited. Thank you very much for the support these

years.” Rosberg said that his only regret regarding the announcement was that it put his Mercedes team in a “difficult situation” - the German having originally been signed through to 2018. “For me personally [the decision] is not that difficult, it feels right,” Rosberg said. “The only thing that makes it [difficult], I am putting my racing family into a challenging situation and that is the hardest part for me.” Elaborating on how the idea to retire came about, Rosberg said: “It was after Suzuka. In Suzuka, it became my title to lose - and that is when the pressure really started also, and when I started to think about this: ‘If I do achieve my childhood dream, then it would be great to end there.’ “This year was the best I can be, definitely. In the preparation and anything, I put everything into it. “I achieved what I set out for. It is clear from six years old, starting off in gokart, it was dream already, inspired by my

Payet could leave West Ham’

Dimitri Payet is likely to leave West Ham if the club are unable to improve their form, according to Sky Sports pundit and former Hammers striker Tony Cottee. Payet enjoyed a sensational debut campaign in the Premier League after arriving at West Ham from Marseille for £10.75m in June 2015, helping Slaven Bilic’s side finish seventh and secure Europa League qualification. But the 29-year-old,

who scored 12 goals in 38 appearances during his first year in England, has been unable to recapture the same consistent form this season having starred for France at Euro 2016. West Ham currently sit just seven points above the relegation zone in 13th spot and Cottee fears his former club will be powerless to stop Payet from leaving if their results do not pick up in the second half of the season.

dad, and all the way through. There it was more a childhood thing, going for that – I have done it and I am so happy.

“At the same time, it was a very, very tough year and I don’t want to do that again.”

48-team World Cup approved

IFA’s council members have unanimously approved Gianni Infantino’s plan for a 48-team World Cup. The council members chose Infantino’s plan above four other options, one of which was to leave the tournament in its current 32team format. The new structure, featuring 16 groups of three followed by a 32-team knockout, is scheduled to be implemented in time for the 2026 finals. Infantino put World Cup expansion at the top of his agenda when he was installed as president Sepp Blatter’s replacement last year, and a number of proposals were put forward.

Two involved 48-team finals, another two suggested expansion to 40 teams and the final option was to stick with 32 teams. Critics of Infantino’s preferred plan, which will see the number of matches rise from 64 to 80, included several high-profile clubs and the German Football Federation, which does not currently have a representative on the FIFA council. And the European Club Association reacted to the FIFA vote with a statement repeating its opposition. Germany are the current World Cup holders having won in Brazil in 2014 Germany are the current World Cup holders having

won in Brazil in 2014 It read: “We fail to see the merits to changing the current format of 32 that has proven to be the perfect formula from all perspectives. “Questionable also is the urgency in reaching such an important decision, with nine years to go until it becomes applicable, without the proper involvement of stakeholders who will be impacted by this change. “We understand that this decision has been taken based on political reasons rather than sporting ones and under considerable political pressure, something ECA believes is regrettable. “ECA will analyse in detail the impact and the

consequences of the new format and will address the matter at the next meeting of its Executive Board scheduled for the end of January.” But supporters including Jose Mourinho have pointed

out the maximum number of games any team can play will remain the same at seven, while Infantino insists the format can fit into the current 32-day timeframe.

Paddy Lowe leaves Mercedes to join Williams for 2017

Paddy Lowe has left his role as Mercedes executive director to join Williams, Sky sources understand. It is understood Lowe has been allowed to leave without serving a notice period so he can join the Grove team, with Valtteri Bottas poised to move in the opposite direction to partner Lewis Hamilton. Lowe joined the Silver Arrows in 2013 to work alongside Toto Wolff but his contract was set to expire in May. Bottas has been in talks with Mercedes about replacing Nico Rosberg for the upcoming season, with Felipe Massa set to come out of retirement to return to Williams. Lowe started his career at Williams in 1987, enjoying a successful six-year period as joint head of electronics, in which Nigel Mansell won the world championship for the Grove team. His 20 years at McLaren culminated in three more drivers’ titles, and Lowe advanced to the team’s technical

director by 2011. His move to Mercedes two years later brought more success, with the team going on to win three successive Constructors’ Championships. But Lowe said he would sit down with team boss Wolff to discuss his future at the end of the 2016 season, and it now looks like he will link up with Williams for the second time in his career following Pat Symonds’ exit before Christmas. Lowe has been linked with a management role at Grove. Mercedes, meanwhile, could replace Lowe with former Ferrari technical director James Allison. The highly-rated Englishman left the Scuderia last July, with his gardening leave period thought to last for 12 months.

F1’s world champions have been in negotiations with Williams, who they supply with engines, over the release of Bottas since December. A

Where’s the Kit?

West Ham have once again proved just how astute and scrupulous they really are after an “administrative error” meant that they were unable to wear their limited edition FA Cup kit in the FA Cup this season. At the start of the season, the Hammers proudly unveiled a special all-navy ‘Thames Ironworks’ strip in honour of their industrial roots, which was specifically set aside for use in their cup campaign.

However, keen-eyed fans may have noticed that West Ham were wearing their standard home kit when they got pulverised by Man City in the FA Cup third round on Friday night. According to the Daily Mail, this was because West Ham officials mistakenly assumed that the FA had okayed the use of the shirt, only to find out later that it contravened advertising regulations. A source close to the FA said the problem stemmed

from a commercial issue with the shirt. There are strict guidelines over the size and prominence of sponsors’ logos on teams’ shirts. So now, with West Ham tumbling out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle, the Umbro kit – which cost £90 all-in and sold out within days of its release – will now go unworn, other than in a pre-season friendly against Juventus back in early August.
