THE leader of a criminal gang who was declared dead in 2016 has turned up alive and well in Valencia. The Hungarian man was originally charged in 2014 as being the leader of a car theft ring and was allowed to return to Hungary awaiting trial. In 2016 his lawyer presented the Spanish courts with a death certificate showing he had died in Hungary.

As the Hungarian authorities confirmed the authenticity of this document the Spanish courts were obliged to drop the case against him. However there continued to be reported sightings of the man back in Valencia and other parts of Spain. Investigators re-opened the case and were able to confirm he was still alive and well and still pursuing criminal activities.

T h e s e included boat and luxury car theft alongside various other crimes. He has been living here under various false identities and is also likely to be charged with identity theft alongside his latest crimes as

Dear Readers

Welcome readers; I believe we can all agree that the big switch to summer has now been flicked. After a few weeks of weather ups-and-downs we now we have the knowledge of what lies ahead. Yes it’s wall-to-wall sunshine, warm nights and hot days, so if you enjoy the heat then here we go, its here for the next five months or thereabouts. The beaches are getting busier and busier and not so surprising when we think about how the Costa Blanca has such a beautiful coast line. The sea is warming up day-by-day so if your brave enough, give it a try; a quick swim in the salt water is great for the skin and revitalising for your body. This time of year is when some of us start to think “oh dear!” After all of that comfort eating during the winter and now it’s time to sort of expose some bits. The legs come out and shirts are off, whoops... little bit of extra weight reveals itself and “oh dear, I wasn’t looking like that this time last year I’m sure? So what’s happened...?!” Ladies are flocking to the salons for their annual treatments of hair removal bekini lines and the pampering as well as taking the time to keep trim. So for me and the rest of the guys, what’s the plan? Here we are in the sunshine enjoying an ice-cold beer accompanied by those geourgous tapas and bits. Then there is the weekend BBQ’s; yes the food is flowing and so are the extra pounds. Well guys and girls, my plan is the “Big Summer Weigh In.” Anyone can join in male or female and we will track the progress of our readers and radio listeners. So the way it works is send in your opening weight, name and location for the next issue on May 23rd to our Whatsapp number or by Email to Galaxy Radio on +34675237575 / weighin@galaxyradio.es

What’s more important is I’m in this as well as photos of which, I must say, I’m not looking forward to seeing in the next issue! Moving on, the highlight of the month has to be the Champions league final and the end of football season that will determine the line up for next seasons league placements. So enjoy the thrills and spills of the final games. Finally don’t forget to join Star Radio and Mickey Pearce in Benidorm at the Triangle Pub every Thursday afternoon, KM Playa on Wednesday afternoon and every night Tueday to Saturday at Sinatra Premium Rincon. crime which they believe Alicante is vulnerable to. The city ranks fifth across Spain after Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville despite being a relatively small municipality. On an individual level many people are still not taking even the most basic precautions such as changing p a s s w o r d s regularly, having a good anti-virus programme and being careful about what E-Mails they open or respond to.

LOCAL charity EMAUS is well known for its good works in helping the most vulnerable members of Spanish society – the elderly, homeless children, children with mental illness, domestic abuse victims and babies. All are in danger of having this help cut off as EMAUS has been forced to go into liquidation due to monies owed to the Social Security department, much of which is fines for late payment.

While many less deserving causes such as banks and football teams have had these debts recued or waived in the past, the government s e e m s unwilling to take this course of action with EMAUS. They have asked people for support to change this situation by

digitally signing the petition at https://goo.gl/PTytzN or you can go to www.change. org and type “emaus” in the sites search engine.

The police investigation led them to the woman’s son who was in prison for the attempted murder of an aunt in October 2014. The man confessed to killing his mother after an argument and then dismembering her corpse

to dispose of the body. As €45,000 had been taken from the dead woman’s account at first the police suspected that she may have disappeared of her own accord, but their suspicions about the role of her son proved to be well founded.

Tragedy remembered

By Simon Russell

NEXT year see’s the fiftieth anniversary of one of Spain’s worst industrial accidents, an event commemorated on 30 April in the Alicante town of Ibi where the disaster occurred. Known as the Mirafe catastrophe, after the toy factory where the accident occurred, 33 people lost their lives in 1968. The factory had been manufacturing gunpowder for toy guns and the explosion that caused the deaths could be heard and seen for miles around say witnesses who are still alive today. However the accident had many other repercussions. The factory, although a major employer in Ibi, was unlicenced and had scant regard for health and safety. The factory owners took advantage of cheap labour from poorer parts of Spain, workers who knew that if they complained about conditions would lose their jobs and could soon be replaced. Possibly most scandalously, five of the dead workers were

under fourteen years of age, highlighting the then widespread practice of child labour in Spanish factories. Although little was done by the Francoist authorities at the time, gradually the shock and outrage helped contribute towards improved working conditions as Spain’s workers started to be treated on a par with their wealthier European neighbours. There are expected to be major events planned in 2018 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the disaster, probably to be held around the 1 May “workers day” holiday.

Our unique Offer

Last week saw a massive influx of 14,000 cruise ship passengers into Alicante port aboard six cruise ships over just two days. Many of them will have disembarked for some or all of the day, and the city did it’s best to prepare and hopefully benefit from the massive midweek influx of people. Forty buses

were laid on to ferry people into the city, although many will have travelled further afield, with bars and restaurants as far as Benidorm reporting receiving customers from the ships. It is hoped that many of the passengers having got a glimpse of Alicante and its surrounding areas may return at a later date for a longer stay.

Red Rum and coke

By Simon Russell

A man has fallen foul of a little known law and been found guilty of being drunk in charge of a horse on a public highway. The man and his mount were seen weaving all over the road in Galicia, endangering other road users. He was breathalysed and found to be five times over the drink drive limit. Both cyclist and horse riders are subject to the same alcohol limits as drivers of motorised vehicles, although in practice they would have to be judged a danger to themselves or others before being tested.

Big rise in help for the needy

By Simon Russell

THE Red Cross gave some form of assistance to over 440,000 people last year in Alicante province alone, a rise of 20% on 2015. The charity offers a wide range of social help including health, training for employment, child care and general emergency help with the most vulnerable individuals in the province. 2,400 of those who received help were infants, said the

organisations p r o v i n c i a l president Antonio Navarro. The Red Cross has 38 “action points” across Alicante set up to help everyone from the homeless to families struggling with energy bills or even those requiring emotional support. 2.5 million kilos of food were handed out

last year while 5,300 people received training funded by the Red Cross. The hope with employment training

SIX years ago little Oscar Gomez died of cancer; a death that his parents feel has always been avoidable and was a result of medical malpractice. His parents have been campaigning to raise awareness of Oscar’s case and to continue with this, his father Rodolfo is cycling 600 kilometres from Albacete to Cadiz and stopping at sporting events on the way to collect signatures and explain their plight. Rodolfo and Oscar’s mother, Virtudes, are attempting to collect enough support to re-

open their case against Alicante General Hospital, who they believed gave Oscar the wrong treatment and a late diagnosis.

The parents have said their campaign is not about money but ensuring that the same thing never happens again.

A freighter that was due to sail to Valencia port was found to be carrying 230 kilos of cocaine after the boat was searched by police in the Brazilian port of Suape, near the city of Pernambuco. Customs officers and police carried out the search and discovered the drugs inside containers packed with stone garden ornaments and hidden in bags. The Brazilian police are trying to trace the origin of the drugs and who they were intended for when they reached Spain. It is not known whether the cocaine was due to be distributed locally in the Valencia region or was destined for onward distribution to other parts of Spain or Europe. The street value of this amount of cocaine is probably upwards of €8 million.

Brit numbers dwindle further

By Simon Russell

WHETHER it’s fear of Brexit, the falling pound or other factors, it is clear that the number of British expatriates on the Costa Blanca continues to show a downward trend. Based on town hall padrons, the number of Brits living in this part of Spain dropped by 8,000 in 2016 and is now at a level not seen since 2004.

The British still make up a sizeable portion of the population, particularly in Alicante Province where they account for around 15% of the total population. The padron is not an exact science and it is always difficult to state exact numbers although they will almost certainly be higher than the reported figures. However the trend

Orchestral manoeuvres

is certainly downward, something which will be of concern to businesses dependant on British spending power. On the other hand many firms have begun to alter their business models and started to aim at the local Spanish population as well as Brit expats, something which is paying dividends for many.

LOVERS of classical music have plenty to look forward to in May if they live in or around Alicante city with two major orchestras appearing there. On 11 May the world famous BBC Philharmonic is coming to town where they will be performing works by Beethoven and Bruckner.

On 26 May the renowned Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra will be performing works’ by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Both outfits are playing at the ADDA symphony hall and for more information you can visit the ADDA website www. diputacionalicante.es/es/ adda/Paginas/Inicio.aspx

ELCHE Hospital had a spate of twins being born last week, with three sets arriving in a fourteen hour period. As is usual with twins their birthweights were low, ranging from 850 to 1,900 grams. For this reason some had to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for monitoring, although thankfully all appear to be healthy. Two of the delighted though tired parents come from

Aspe while the others live in Orihuela. Elche Hospital is the areas specialist unit for low birth weight babies so will always expect to handle more multiple births than surrounding hospitals.

A bit of Alicante in Portugal By Simon Russell

PROBABLY the most eye catching aspect of Alicante’s promotional trip to Portugal is the placing of an eight metre high Fallas statue in one of Lisbon’s most famous squares. 180 people, many from travel agencies, were in the Portuguese capital over the bank holiday weekend to arrange various promotional activities focusing on Alicante as a destination for Portuguese tourists. As well as promoting the Fallas festi-

vals, the Volvo yacht race, golf, beaches and food were all represented. Portuguese national airline TAP begins flights to Alicante airport from 8 June which continue throughout the summer. The Fallas statue was also used to represent Alicantino culture at the Fitur tourism fair in Madrid. After it has been shown in Lisbon it will be returned to Alicante and finally burnt on the San Juan festival on 24 June.

Not just man’s work

TWENTY years after first being allowed to work in Spain’s docks and ports, female stevedores still only make up 5% of the total workforce. However the port with easily the most female dockers is Valencia, where they make up 20% of the workforce. The group held a meeting recently to try and raise the profile and understanding of their work.

“We do exactly the same job as the men” said worker Natalia, who went on to explain that a qualified stevedore needs to pass several exams – and not be afraid of heights. Some men, particularly some of the old hands at the port, still insist that this is no job for a female, but the group have been steadily setting about proving them wrong for twenty years now.

Hell’s Canyon lives up to its name

By Simon Russell

A 33 year old man fell into the Barranco del Infierno – Hell’s Canyon – in the Marina Alta area and broke a leg, necessitating a helicopter rescue. The accident happened on 4 May when the man was out hiking the area with friends and he slipped on wet rocks after stopping near a waterfall. A nurse attended the scene to treat the man before he was airlifted to Denia Hospital where he will be treated for a broken tibia and fibula. The hiker, who probably won’t be hiking for a while, lives locally and is a resident of Alfaz del Pi.

Cancer campaigner Rally for coastal train

By Simon Russell

By Simon Russell

A Javea woman is leading a campaign to introduce mammograms for all women from the age of thirty in order to increase early detection of breast cancer. Maria Miralles, herself a breast cancer sufferer, noticed the large number of women in their thirties who were being treated for the disease although the current advisory age for checks is fifty. Maria was in her early forties when she had her screening, but as her mother died of breast cancer

at the age of 41 she was deemed a high risk. Her campaign, which started in November, has collected 40,000 signatures of support, both on change.org and in person. While many experts agree with Maria’s views on early screening, other feel that the current age is sufficient, bearing in mind the extra costs. All however agree that women of all ages should monitor their breasts for lumps and if they have any concerns at all visit their doctor straight away.

AT least 3,000 people attended a rally in Denia to voice their support for building the A l i c a n t e -Va l e n c i a coastal train route. A t t e n d e e s i n c l u d e d representatives from all major parties as well as mayors from many towns that will benefit if the

much delayed project should finally go ahead. The crowd gathered in the symbolic location of the old train station on La Via and the movements manifesto was read out. This states that 2.5 million people live along the proposed route, many of

whose lives will be much improved by the arrival of the Costa Train. They reiterated the call that the two major cities of the Valencian Community not having a direct rail link is unacceptable in this day and age, and would benefit both residents and tourists alike.

Invasion of Holiday hikers rescued the jellyfish By Simon Russell

By Simon Russell

JAVEA’S Arenal Beach had unwanted visitors over the recent holiday weekend – swarms of jellyfish. Thousands of the creatures, identified as pelagia noctiluca, bright purple jellyfish that also have the ability to glow in the dark. This trait turned the water at the Arenal a bright

glowing purple. Many were washed ashore and people were advised to stay out of the water as they have an irritating sting. When the sun rose the jellyfish moved away and those on the beach soon disappeared into the sand, although bathers were still cautious.

Power cut By Simon Russell

RESIDENT’S of a small development in Calpe have had their electricity cut off in what seems to be a mix up over their tenancy agreements and rights. There are around fifteen families on the Tossal de la Cometa urbanization and at the moment they are forced to cope with generators and camp stoves while also having the threat of eviction hang over them. An eviction order was issued at the end of last year but apparently not communicated to the residents themselves. This was

after the ownership of the properties has changed hands, the new Madrid based owner apparently being unaware that the houses were occupied. Meanwhile most of the residents seem to be in possession of valid rental agreements, but these are linked to the previous owners and other agencies. While some groups have started to leave the rest insist that there is nowhere to rent in Calpe this time of year and intend to stay put while the courts examine the case.

ALICANTE’S helicopter rescue service was kept busy on the May Day holiday with two groups of hikers requiring emergency assistance. The first call came at about 1pm after a young man from Madrid had suffered a head injury on Calpe’s Ifach Rock. He was hanging from a rope and in obvious difficulty and was not in an area where the helicopter could land. Eventually he was

rescued on foot and transferred to the chopper where he was taken to hospital. The next call was at 4pm in the Sierra de Bernia near Benissa where a man and woman had got lost. They were traced by the helicopter team and led to safety. The holiday weekend saw ideal weather for walking and climbing, and many people travelled down from other parts of Spain for the break.

Hefty fine for non-residents

By Simon Russell

DRIVERS parking illegally in the new resident’s only zone in Las Roques in Denia face fines of €200, despite complaints that the parking restrictions are not clearly marked. Police started the clampdown after Easter when the area was packed with parked cars despite the restrictions which were designed to ease parking and access for the local residents. However many drivers who were ticketed complained that the new signs warning of the parking restrictions

were too small and easily missed. If the fine is paid promptly then it will be reduced by half – but if you appeal against it then the early payment period will almost certainly have lapsed.

Preserving history

By Simon Russell

BENITATCHELL’S “La Rosa en el temps” fiesta has its origins as far back as 1771, but the town is using modern methods to preserve this important part of their culture. They have been employing social media such as Facebook to contact residents and request any photos or other memorabilia relating to the fiesta and some of these are being exhibited in the town until mid-June. The town already had a large stock of photos from renowned photographer Vicente Ferrer and this will form the centrepiece of the exhibit but

there are plenty of other things to see. You can view the archive material which is on display in the Municipal Market from now until 15 June.

Celebrating Europe By Simon Russell

EUROPE Day is held every year on 9 May and its aim is to celebrate peace and unity on the continent. The date is chosen to commemorate a key speech made in 1950 by Robert Schuman, the French foreign minister, setting out his idea for a new form of political co-operation in Europe that would make war between the member nations unthinkable. This was of course the roots of the current European Union which the UK will be leaving within the next two years but which Spain is still a key member of. Spain is an adopted country for many Europeans and one of the

most multi-national municipalities is Teulada-Moraira, which is celebrating Europe throughout the month. 9 May itself sees a special filming of “The Olive Tree” in the Town Hall salon at 7.30pm with entry free for all. On the 13 May there is a special Merianda Europea (Afternoon Tea) from 5pm to 8pm at the La Font picnic area. From now until July there is an exhibition of painting workshops hosted by artists from around the EU. Also from now until 26 May there are Red Cross collection points set up. For more details of any or all events please go to www.teuladamoraira.org or just pop into the town hall.

For the last five years the first hundred kilos produced has been auctioned with the proceeds going to the Caritas charity for the local needy. This year the winning bid was

€1,200 by supermarket giant Carrefour in a hotly contested auction. “This helps us remain true to our policy of supporting local producers and also collaborating in helping local charitable groups such as Caritas” said a Carrefour spokesman. The charity auction stems from a time when there could be a genuine bidding frenzy as a very limited amount of the El Perello tomatoes were produced. However in recent years production levels have risen over tenfold – although you can still expect to pay at least €2 a kilo for perelloneros if you come across them in the shops.

Lucky streak comes to violent end

By Simon Russell

A man who won €3,000 in a casino in Valencia was robbed and beaten after leaving the establishment. He had been observed winning the money on the roulette tables by two Romanian men who even encouraged him to continue playing. After leaving he offered the two a lift, but they then attacked him and stole his winnings plus another €4,000 he was carrying which were takings from his business. The man went to the police who immediately

arranged for him to be taken to hospital as he had sustained injuries including broken teeth. After taking a statement they were able to trace the culprits who were arrested and charged with robbery with violence.

A loggerhead turtle was returned to the wild after completing its recovery in the Oceanografic aquarium in Valencia. The turtle was rescued earlier this year and after being judged well enough to return to sea was released during the Denia Boat Show over the May

Day holiday weekend. Transoceanic yachtsman Alex Pella did the honours aboard Denia’s Marine reserve vessel, while a group of lucky onlookers watched from a nearby catamaran. Loggerheads are found throughout the world’s oceans and are now officially regarded as an en-

dangered species. They can grow as heavy as 450kg and live on average to about fifty years old though can survive much longer. They only lay eggs every two to three years and are also vulnerable to plastic and other pollutants, all factors which have pushed them into endangerment.

Storms to keep beach Grasping the future closed for summer By Simon Russell

By Simon Russell

PLAYA Babilonia in Guardamar will not be open to the public this summer, the local town hall has announced. This is due to the area being deemed as unsafe after the storms in December and January of this winter after a report concluded that the inshore waters pose a serious risk to swimmers.

The storms also caused significant damage to houses as well as the pedestrian boulevard and many of the beachfront properties were built back in the 1940’s with poor foundation that the storms have made dangerously unstable. The main access road was also damaged and remains in a state of disrepair.

IN what could be a significant leap forward in medical technology, engineering staff at the IES El Palmeral College in Orihuela have manufactured a prosthetic arm using a 3D printer. The recipient is nine year old Redovan, who was able to use the new limb to catch and grasp things for the first time. The arm was even able to be made

Free Fiesta

By Simon Russell

EL Campello’s Mig Any 2017 festival starts on 12 May and runs until 14 May. The festivities start with a children’s dance at 5.30pm on Friday the 12th with karaoke, table games, children’s disco and to close the day a mobile disco that starts at 12.30am (sorry early sleepers). The next day starts with a festival breakfast

in her favourite colours of red and pink. The potential for this is enormous, with cost and production times both being significantly reduced. The technology could even be used for things such as dentures, say the developers who made the new limb in their own spare time after hearing of little Redovan’s disability.

at 10am and other events lined up for the Saturday include a tapas hour, live music, a paella competition and an evening festival which starts at 9pm and runs until the small hours. The final day features various parades and the fiesta concludes at 3pm with a special closing lunch. Most events are held in the city centre or Polideportivo and are free to the public; please visit www.elcampello.es for more details in English or Spanish.

Sing while you’re winning

THE 23rd Youth Choir Festival in Torrevieja was won by Moscow children’s choir “Avrora”. The event, held at the International Auditorium, saw the runners-up prize going to the Spanish entrant from Pontevedra while third place was awarded to a Slovakian choral group. Eight choirs participated in the event which the judges all

agreed was of a very high standard. However the young Russian singers stood out for them and deservedly walked away with the winner’s prize of €3,000. There were also special performances by local Torrevieja choirs during the event, which is growing increasingly popular and has achieved international recognition.

Think Pink-Benidorm Pink Weekend By Simon Russell

THE “Pink Weekend” is coming to Benidorm from Thursday 25 May to Saturday 27 May. Based around the cities Old Town there will be pink themed nights in over twenty local bars through the duration of the three day festival. There will also be an open air stage throughout, hosting many performers and DJs, all free to the

general public. In addition there will be a Tapas and Wine route, centring on the Old Town’s bars and restaurants. As one of the most LGBT friendly resorts in Spain, Benidorm is an ideal venue for the event which promises to brighten up the town even more than usual. For more information see the Benidorm Pink Weekend page on Facebook.

Airport award More Spanish please By Simon Russell

By Simon Russell

IN recognition of his achievements since taking over the role, Benidorm Town Hall is to present the soon to be departing director of Alicante airport with the “Distincion Europa” award. Santiago MartinezCava Arenas has been in the role for ten years, a period which has seen major changes

and improvement at El Altet, something many put down to Mr Arena’s strong leadership. Clearly Benidorm is one of the places that most stands to benefit from a successful local airport and it is because of this that they are giving out the award. Mr Arena’s leaves his current role in June this year to take over at Gran Canaria airport.

BENIDORM’S hoteliers have expressed concerns at the drop off in Spanish holidaying in the resort, something highlighted by the 5% decrease in them staying in the town over the Easter period. The British made up over half of the cities tourists over the same period, something which many feel

is a reflection on the UK’s stronger economy as opposed to Spain’s still fragile recovery. Hotelier’ group Hosbec feels that one of the main problems that need to be addressed is the increasing number of Spanish staying in unregistered accommodation that do not then figure in the holidaymaker statistics.

Beautiful Miles

By Simon Russell

NORWEGIAN Conrad Haakansson won Alfaz del Pi’s 9th “Millas mas Bonitas” race on the 30 April, the second time he has triumphed in the event. Designed to highlight the attractions of Alfaz and Albir, the race translates roughly as “beautiful miles” and is run through some

of the area’s most stunning landscape including the Serra Gelada Natural Park and Albir seafront. 300 runners took part in the race with the female event being won by Maxine Mckinnon. Changes to this year’s events included changing the race to the last Sunday in April,

a children’s fun run, and teams of physiotherapists ready to treat the runners as they crossed the finish line. The winner’s prize is a trip to Bern in Switzerland where an equivalent race is held in the Swiss capital later this month.

Food, dancing and bingo

THERE were activities to suit everyone at the annual Acampada festival held in Benidorm over the bank holiday weekend. Although limited to Acampada penistas (social members), the three day event saw 3,200 attendees from 160 registered clubs at the event on Gran Via. There was a paella contest, bingo, zumba dance classes and, of course, copious amounts of food and drink for everyone attending, many

of whom camped over in the pleasant though not too warm weather. Bouncy castles and other games were laid on for the kids during the weekend and the event closed in traditional Spanish style with a concert that went well into the early hours. Despite the large numbers attending and the free flowing drinks, police said that the entire festival passed without any incidents.

Life guards in limbo Harnessing the sun By Simon Russell

THE second Benidorm Festival of Magic is to be held on the weekend of 27 and 28 May and will be split between Benidorm Palace and the streets of the city. Councillor for Culture Ana Pellicer said that passers-by in the Colonia Madrid area as well as Calles Gambo, Escuelas and Armada Espanola will all get the chance to become involved as various noted magicians bring their acts into the town. Ms Pellicer said that the calibre of

performers this year is very high with such well-known acts as Mag Malastruc, Huang Zheng, David Climent and Mago Murphy taking part in an international cast of some of the world’s top performers.

BENDIDORM firm GET have completed what is now the Valencian Communities largest solar power panel. Installed in the town of Villena, the system will produce 100kw of power for the town, at 20% of the cost of traditional power sources. GET, a family owned firm based in Benidorm’s Rincon area, are at the forefront of

solar power innovations, concentrating currently on the Valencian Community. They believe that Valencia still has a long way to go regarding solar power. The region with the most panels is currently Galicia which experiences far less sunshine than this part of Spain – obviously an essential commodity for solar power.

Clean-up call Appeal to bring Benidorm

death fall victim home

By Simon Russell

By Simon Russell

THE socialist opposition party have called for an urgent clean-up operation at the top of the L’Aiguera park area of Benidorm. They said that the overgrown area was making access difficult for pushchairs, wheelchairs etc. and also rather m e m o r a b l y described the area as resembling “a museum of dog excrement”. There were

similar problems about Calle Virgen del Rocio and the group said that they had received several complaints from parents who found the area impassable with strollers. They stated that this is more than just a tidiness and cleanliness issue but it has become dangerous as some people have to use the road to pass, often the more vulnerable pedestrians.

In a story widely reported in the UK media, a young woman fell to her death in a Benidorm hotel over the recent holiday weekend. 27 year old Scot Kirsty Maxwell was on a friend’s hen party in the resort, just a few months after she had been married herself. It appears that Kirsty had wandered into the wrong hotel room after in the early hours, which is where she fell to her death from the balcony. A 32 year old British man, Joseph Graham, who was in the tenth floor room at the time with three other friends, has been formally questioned by Spanish police about the incident. However he has been allowed to return to the UK which indicates that the authorities probably do not see him as being culpable for the death. The real story may never come out, but it appears that the whole thing may well have just been a tragic accident, possibly attributable to sleepwalking. An appeal has been started to raise the money to bring Kirsty’s body back to the UK, and £30,000 has been raised at the time of writing.

Major fire on tourist strip

By Simon Russell

THREE fire crews were needed to extinguish a serious blaze at the Zeus Apartments on Calle Gerona in Benidorm, a street frequented by British holidaymakers due

to its proliferation of pubs and clubs. However as the fire broke out at around 3pm on the 30 April there was no sign of the clubbers who normally crowd the area in the evenings.

The other fortunate aspect was that the apartment where the fire started was empty at the time of the fire so there were no injuries. The fire started on the sixteenth floor of the

apartment block while the occupier was out, and it is not yet clear what caused the blaze. The dwelling and surrounding area were badly damaged in the incident.

Book exchange

By Simon Russell

LA Nucia held its fifth book swapping event in Plaza l’Almaserra recently with over 500 books being exchanged by avid readers on the day. Entitled “Compartir lectura es compartir cultura” – Sharing reading is sharing culture – the event was organised by the Department of Culture. Books available for exchange were organised into different categories of adults and kids books separated by language

with English, Spanish, Dutch, Valenciano, German and French all being represented. There were also local

writers present to sign copies of their books as well as children’s entertainment, book readings and a dance performance.

Chip shocker

By Simon Russell

A British boy came “close to death” according to authorities after eating chips in a Cala de Finestrat take away. The boy ate some chips and immediately went into anaphylactic shock, although fortunately for him the Guardia Civil were close by on normal duties and were able to rush

him to hospital. They were then able to contact the child’s mother and the boy was discharged from hospital the same day. It is thought that the child has a severe fish allergy which was triggered by the chips being fried in oil that had also been used for cooking fish.

Spanish property sales increased in the first few Sales of property in Spain increased across all regions in the first quarter of 2017, up 26%, according to the latest study from international agents with offices around the nation. The increase in the volume of sales has been particularly noticeable in key cities such as a rise of 58% in Barcelona and an increase of 50% in Valencia, according to the latest quarterly market report from Lucas Fox International. The total value of transactions also rose significantly in the first quarter, up by 54% across all regions, by 62% in Barcelona, by

109% in Madrid and by 112% in Valencia. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the number of property sales transactions across the whole of Spain during the first two months of 2017 went up by 10% compared to the same period in 2016. The biggest increases were 23% in Barcelona, a rise of 21% in Girona, up 17% in the Balearics, up 12% in Málaga and a rise of 11% in Madrid. Most indices are also reporting property price increases of between 2.5% and 4.5% across Spain. ‘Our market analysis shows that

home sales across the cities and most desirable second-home destinations maintained a steady upward trend in the first quarter of 2017,’ said Rod Jamieson, head of operations at Lucas Fox. ‘We expect that the recovery will

extend to the surrounding areas of the cities and other parts of Spain during the next 12 to 18 months. With easier financing and continued low interest rates, we predict that the demand for homes will continue to rise,’ he explained.

Carpets For Every Room In The House

A rug can be a statement piece in a living room , or source of softness and warmth. However they should also be practical where you need to use them. Many years ago more than likely you would of bought a carpet in a specialised rugs shop and odds are it would have been made from wool. Wool is one of the best fibers for making rugs

and carpets. It makes high durability flooring ,with some other great advantages. Such as a naturaly flame retardant ,it assits in stabilizing humidity in a room. It has great insulation properties not only for warmth but also noise.it s a natural product and can be more ecofriendly than synthetic fibers.alos wool carpets are naturally dirt resistant. Wool rugs can be great for living rooms or hallways ,but they do have their disadvantages if you wanted to use them in bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and even living rooms. Price can be a large factor when purchasing a carpet and wool rugs are more expensive than rugs made from man made fibers. Plus synthetic rugs have advanced greatly , now they come with stain resitant finishes , They are water resistant which inturn

help stop mold growth, synthetic made rugs are anti alergenic much better for babys rooms or any one sufering from alergys. another benefit is they resist color fade from sun light much better than wool. So we would recommend if you were buying a rug for the kitchen or door way for it to be made of synthetic fibers, preferably with a non slip backing. You can wash these rugs easily and serve for a safer stepping surface. usually retailing from 5,95euro Another room that’s best with a nonslip rug can be the bathroom, microfiber pile is very absorbent ,washes briliantly and dries very fast. The synthetic fiber pile will resist moister in a bathroom and not run its color .plus the value of these sort of bathroom rugs are very reasonable ,for example two of them for 16 euro. At leos softfurnishigns superstore we sell hallway carpets made in spain in lengths of 2m ,3 and 4 meters, prices start from 30 euro,. For your bedrooms nice

warm wool pile rugs, even sheepskins would look great but we can say the feel of long pile rug on your feet is just as good, better value with some great offers on all year round. Plus with an adapting range theres more choice than ever. A desing in color or cut out pattern , weaved rug, long pile , short pile, any style for every room in your house, we believe choice and knowledge is the best way to help our customers.

Don’t put off buying a area rug for your living room, theres nothing better to give that welcome home enviornment ,winter ,spring or summer. Rugs define a space and add softness. The staff at Leo’s have great friendly advice and the knowledge to help any one. Phone for more info on 965484848 or find them on facebook LEOS SOFTFURNISHINGS SUPERSTORE altea.

How to Stop Your Puppy Chewing Problem Learning how to stop your puppy from chewing can become a difficult chore that will leave you frustrated, especially when they get ahold of your favorite pair of shoes, or they are constantly chewing on you. If you want to stop your puppy from chewing, there are a few things that you need to understand about them before you just blame them for their behavior. To begin with, chewing is a natural part of being a puppy. Rather than trying to stop them from this natural

Residencia canina y felina Boarding kennel & Cattery

behavior, you should work towards redirecting the problem to another source. Get them chew toys and a bone thatthey are allowed to gnaw on to their hearts content. It is much easier to redirect a problem than to try and stop it completely, especially when the problem is more of a human problem than a puppy one. Another thing to consider is that certain behaviors tend to instigate chewing, especially when they are chewing on you. This can lead to dog aggression problems later on, so you need to nip it in the bud now rather than putting it off.

But, again, this is a human problem as much as a puppy problem. In order to stop your pupply from chewing on you, you need to pay attention to what you do that instigate it. Certain sudden movements, or aggressive behavior towards your puppy (even in play) will push them into chewing. Also, when you are playing, if they start chewing on you, stop the activity. Dogs can’t distinguish between play time and not play time. Although they love to play, the habits that they will pick up then will transfer to other times.

You should never allow your dog to play aggressively and chewing is one of the easiest bad habits to break. When they start chewing, redirect them to one of their play toys, and separate yourself from them. If the chewing problem persists, you may need to keep them in a kennel until they learn to behave.

Crate training can take some time, but is very beneficial in stopping a wide variety of puppy problems, including them wanting to chew on you. Follow these tips to stop your puppy from chewing, and get them under control. It doesn’t take much, but by paying attention to your behavior and redirecting their behavior to an appropriate toy will help you to get things under control.

Cats and Cancer Just about all there for several reasons as there was always a huge variety to choose from, from the comfort of little kittens to your veterans, which would cherish a new loving home.

While cancer in cats isn’t as common as it in dogs, it’s still one of the main causeof death in older cats. Using the Animal Cancer Foundation, 6 000 0000 cats will be clinically determined to have cancer in the us along. And growcause cats are masters at masking illness, it is usually harder to detect. Cancer once was a death sentence for cats, but recent advances in feline cancer research are making treatment possible on many occasions. Just like with human cancers, early detection is essential to successfully treating feline cancers.

Common cancers in cats Essentially the most common sorts of cancer in cats is lymphoma. Other frequently seen cancers are oral squamous carcinomas, just like what people get. Fibrosarcomas, or soft tissue sarcomas, are tumors developing in muscle or perhaps in the connective tissue from the body. These are generally associated with

injections and vaccinations. Other kinds of cancer are less common, nonetheless they do take place in cats: lung tumors, brain tumors, nasal tumors, liver tumors. There are actually fewer incidences of mammary tumors (yes, cats could possibly get breast cancer, too) since more cats are spayed and spaying is among the best ways to prevent this type of cancer.

veterinarian for just a thorough examination.

Indication of feline cancer

Diagnosis

People and cats both show similar symptoms on the subject of cancer: Lumps, especially lumps that seem to be getting bigger Sores that don’t heal Modifications in bowel or bladder habits Unexplained bleeding or a strange discharge from any body opening Lack of appetite and fat loss Difficulty in breathing Lameness or stiffness that persists over a period of time Bad odor Having problems eating or swallowing food

Diagnosis will vary, according to the presenting symptoms. An exam probably will add a complete blood chemistry, blood count, and urinalysis. Your veterinarian takes x-rays, perform an ultrasound, and take tissue biopsies. According to the place that the biopsies are extracted from, this will require sedation, or full anesthesia. Biopsies might be reviewed with a veterinary pathologist to discover the kind of cancer.

If you notice your cat showing such symptoms, take him for your

Treatment Treatment options for cats are almost as varied as alternatives for human cancers, and will be determined by any type of cancer. Surgery is easily

the most common treatment for the lumps or growths that need to get removed. Sometimes, surgery can be curative. Other cancers may require chemotherapy or radiation. Cats are likely to tolerate chemotherapy much better than people, and may have high quality of life for many months and even just years following treatment. Radiotherapy can also be used for tumors that are not to be removed. This is a more stressful therapy for cats, as it requires sedation or anesthesia for every single treatment.

Causes There isn’t all the research in the causeof feline cancer as you can find to the human side, but I wouldn’t think it’s a leap to assume that many of the same toxins in the environment that cause cancer in humans also cause cancers in our cats.

Swimming Pool Dangers

The heat is on and what better way to cool off than to head for the swimming pool? However, sadly every summer brings swimming pool tragedies, often involving young children. Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates, most drownings occurring in home swimming pools. The risk of drowning is significantly reduced by the ability to swim. All children should be taught to swim – apart from being lots of fun it is a life saving skill. However, even the best swimmers can drown. When anywhere near a swimming pool it is absolutely imperative that young children be supervised by a responsible adult at all times. People are often of the impression that they can lie by the pool, G & T in one hand, a good book in the other hand and keep one eye on the children. Not so! Many drownings are not accompanied by noise and panic which would grab your attention, but occur quickly and quietly. From the age of about five, you can start to explain dangers to children, but you still have to be vigilant with supervision. Among adolescents and adults, alcohol use is involved in up to 70% of deaths associated with water recreation.

Article Supplied by The Family Medical Centre, Albir See our advert on the Puzzle Pages

Alcohol influences balance, coordination, and judgment, and its effects are heightened by sun exposure and heat. Inflatable lilos and toys often contribute to swimming pool accidents making swimmers difficult to see. Accidents are more likely when there are numerous children in a pool as often this means they will be running, jumping in etc. Also,a small child in difficulty may go unnoticed. It is often a good idea to evaluate your own skills and consider enrolling in a resuscitation course should you unfortunately ever be faced with a drowning related emergency. Also, all people (including holiday makers) should have an emergency telephone number at hand. Remember, whilst water is great fun, any one of us can drown. It only takes two minutes to be submerged face down in 9 inches of water for drowning to occur.

La Rioja, Navarra & Aragón All the world’s greatest wine regions share one aspect in common: they produce grapes that ripen slowly and exhibit different and sometimes fascinating flavours in differing microclimates within that region. Today we want to introduce you to 3 amazing wine regions: La Rioja, Navarra and Aragón. La Rioja is both a province and an autonomous region located in the North of Spain. It is situated between Castilla La Mancha to the south, Castilla León to the west, Aragón to the east and Navarra and the Pais Vasco to the north. Of course, everyone knows the wines from La Rioja. This area of Spain has over 500 wineries and is internationally famous for the quality of its wines. As well as wine tasting, a visit to this region also offers a range of activities which take place in and around the extensive vineyards, including horse-riding, hot-air ballooning, 4x4 routes… Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, a charming, tiny region four hours north of Madrid. Famous for its red wine and for being a stopover on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage that cuts across northern Spain. Logroño has plenty of undiscovered merits and allures of its own. After being named one of the top cities to live in throughout Spain, Logroño was also just awarded the prestigious honour of the 2012 Gastronomic Capital of

Spain. Unaffected by the mass tourism that has swept across Spain in the past few decades, Logroño feels like a “traditional” Spanish town with a modern twist, especially when it comes to food and wine. Culture and wine together make an unbeatable combination. And add to that some amazing natural attractions... In La Rioja you’ll find Mediterranean forests, high mountain areas, lunar landscapes… Apart from its capital, Logroño, you’ll be able to explore other places such as Santo Domingo de la Calzada and its cathedral, San Millán de la Cogolla, site of the monasteries of Suso and Yuso, declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO and known for being the birthplace of the first written words in the Spanish language. Alfaro is another Region of La Rioja we would like you to discover, washed by the waters of the Ebro and Alhama Rivers. Stroll through the centre of the town and discover churches and palaces with centuries of history, witnesses of its ancient splendour, such as the old Abbey and Abbey Palace (18th century), and the San Miguel Collegiate Church, a Baroque masterpiece from the end of the 17th century. Besides this, Alfaro has a spectacular colony of storks, the world’s largest nesting on one single building. Watching this number of storks flying

through the air is an unforgettable spectacle. We need also to mention La guardia, a delightful town located at the top of a hill, overlooking vineyards and surrounded by a medieval wall. Navarra is an area of contrasts, ranging from the mountains and fertile valleys of the north to the dry, dusty landscapes of the south. It’s one of the four territories that make up Spain’s Basque Country. Navarra is probably best known to foreigners because of its regional capital, Pamplona, where the famous San Fermin bull-running festival inspired American author Ernest Hemingway to write some of his most famous novels, but it has much more to offer than bullfighting. One of the top sights to visit also in Navarra is the town of Olite, home to the kings of Navarra. There is a marvellous castle that makes this town in an authentic medieval city. Aragon is a quiet and very unspoilt region of Spain. Surrounded by mountains with the Pyrenees in the north and the mountainous Sistema Iberico area to the south. Aragon is home to some of the finest Mudejar architecture in the world. The quiet, serpentine streets of Tarazona’s old town are an evocative re-

Olite Castle

minder of the layout of a medieval Spanish town and contain some absorbing sights. The cuisine of these three regions has in common the presence of the rich vegetables from the lands watered by the Ebro River and its tributaries. La Rioja is a Paradise for those who love good eating and drinking, as most of those who visit the region are seduced by the popularity of its extraordinary wines. The Navarra cuisine can be defined as a good combination of original elements from the delicious kitchen of the northern Spain with delicate French influences. Then the Aragonesa cuisine, as well as the Riojana or Navarra one, it is based on a variety of popular stews that contain meat, vegetables, fish or legumes. U3A Vall Del Pop: Marine Turtle Conservation Tim Watmuff will give a talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 1st June on his “volunteer” experience in the conservation of marine turtles. Tim has been a SCUBA diver for 25 years and as a result he has become enchanted by all things marine. He has dived across a lot of the globe, but have only seen Sea Turtles in the wild about six times, so when the opportunity arose to volunteer to support the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Southern Sri Lanka, he leapt at the opportunity! The Sri Lanka Trip was planned as half-holiday and half volunteering for Tim and his wife, Barbara, and after seeing the delights of Sri Lanka for two weeks Tim went off on his turtle conservation task. He checked into the Turtle project as one of six volunteers, ranging in age from 18 to 30 years old and coming from as far afield as Australia; England; Germany; Norway and Wales. Across the road from his accommodation where the tanks containing turtles from 2 days old to 5 years old. The project has 2 objectives:

• To increase the number of hatchlings that successfully reach the sea, and • To educate the local population about Sea Turtles and the dangers they face. Tim will talk about the project and what “volunteering” involved, and his aim is to make the members fall in love with Sea Turtles, as Tim has, so that they will support the conservation programme in Sri Lanka, and elsewhere in the world. For further information check our website [http:// u3avalldelpop.com]. The U3A is all about enjoyment and learning, and this is particularly evident in the U3A Vall del Pop group, whose members generally meet on the first Thursday of each month at the Centre Polivalent in Murla. Spain probes ex-HSBC executives over possible money laundering A Spanish court is probing seven former executives of HSBC’s private Swiss bank on suspicion of money laundering following an investigation of documents in the “Swissleaks” scandal on bank-supported tax evasion, legal sources told AFP Thursday. In an order dated January but not published until now, the National High Court named seven persons under suspicion of “persistent money laundering and criminal association” who in 2006 and 2007 held senior positions at the Swiss subsidiary of HSBC. They include former chairman of the board Peter Widmer and former CEOs Christopher Meares and Clive Bannister. The investigation, which began in May 2016, is based on the “Falciani list”, a cache of files listing unreported accounts of customers of the Swiss subsidiary of HSBC which was stolen in 2008 by former employee Herve Falciani. The “Swissleaks” scandal has triggered the opening of proceedings in France, Spain, Belgium and Argentina. SEE ALSO: Macau introduces new ATM rules to deter Chinese money laundering According to the order, the Spanish court suspects a possible “collaboration” by HSBC in the transfer and repatriation of funds deposited in the Swiss accounts with “the

intention to conceal them from the Spanish treasury”. To make these transfers, HSBC would have collaborated with the Spanish bank Santander and the Spanish subsidiary of the French bank BNP Paribas. The National High Court said it considered there were “indications of suspicion of money laundering”.

On Wednesday, the Spanish court announced that 10 officials in Spain from Santander and the Spanish subsidiary of BNP Paribas had been indicted in the alleged money laundering case involving the HSBC bank. Judge Jose de la Mata ordered the 10 defendants, seven officials from Santander and three from the Spanish branch of BNP Paribas, to appear in mid-June.

Spain to face tough budget cuts

Spain’s newly elected Prime Minister Mariano Rayoy on Friday is expected to push ahead with one of the nation’s most hard-hitting budgets in recent times. The news comes as almost a million protestors took to the streets late on Thursday after a general strike paralysed heavy industry and disrupted transport in Madrid and Barcelona. Spain’s newly elected Prime Minister Mariano Rayoy on Friday is expected to push ahead with one of the nation’s most hard-hitting budgets in recent times. The news comes as almost a million protestors

took to the streets late on Thursday after a general strike paralysed heavy industry and disrupted transport in Madrid and Barcelona.

But Rayoy said he is adamant and will stand by his promise to the other eurozone members to decrease the deficit in spite of the country’s soaring unemployment and current recession. Rayoy’s Popular party will attempt to bring down the public deficit from last year’s 8.51 percent to 5.3 percent

of GDP. This would mean an estimated €20bn to €30bn in austerity measures in addition to the already announced

€8.9bn spending cuts and tax increases of €6.3bn. Those in opposition believe Spain will struggle to deal with such austere

budget cuts. The action is likely to lead to a rigid recession, which would make the adjustment even harder to meet.

GBP/EUR back to €1.18 despite Macron’s triumph in French election A trio of unexpectedly upbeat UK economic reports for the services, manufacturing and construction sectors left the pound pretty upbeat as markets closed for the weekend and Sterling remains close to multi-month highs. The GBP/EUR exchange rate began this week at €1.1827 (up from this morning’s low of €1.1786), GBP/USD remained above $1.2950, GBP/AUD is trading at AU$1.7534 (up 5 cents from last week’s opening levels of AU$1.7070), GBP/NZD is holding NZ$1.8700 and GBP/ CAD’s current rate of C$1.7735 is one of its highest since the UK voted to Brexit last year. The new French President has intimated he will be taking a tough stance on Brexit, and any further hints that he plans to make the UK’s exit from the EU difficult could send the pound lower. Although the reports aren’t expected to alter the Bank of England’s (BoE) current attitude on interest rates, they are at least an encouraging sign of how the UK economy is performing. The data was enough to give the pound a leg up against its peers and help it shake off

concerns surrounding the fraught relationship between Prime Minister Theresa May and EU officials. Meanwhile, over in France, Centrist Emmanuel Macron managed to crush farright Marine Le Pen in the second round of the French election, taking 65% of the vote. While this outcome has helped dispel Frexit fears, it was so long expected that its impact on the euro was pretty minimal. EUR exchange rates did enjoy a small rally immediately after the results were announced, but quickly fell back to previous levels. The Australian dollar came under pressure this morning as domestic building approvals plummeted (exacerbating worries about the Australian housing bubble) and China’s trade data revealed a sharp slump in imports. Today’s economic calendar isn’t exactly bursting with exciting releases, but there are a couple of reports to look out for. The Eurozone’s Sentix Investor Confidence index for May is expected to climb from 23.9 to 25.2 – a potentially euro-positive result.

Daddy day-care on the increase

By Simon Russel

THE number of men taking paternity leave in Spain has risen by over 6% in the first quarter of this year, coinciding with the increase of the paid leave from two weeks to a month. The numbers are significant as until this quarter the trend had been downward, with this reversal indicating that the new measures are proving popular. Despite the increase there is still a wide gap between the four week paternity leave and the sixteen week maternity leave entitlements. This is a situation seen by some groups as a clear inequality for both sexes, for

men due to the smaller leave entitlement and for women because employers will have the expectation that female staff will be absent for longer, which may affect chances of promotion.

Volvo V90 Cross Country It may have a slightly more convoluted name, but the V90 Cross Country essentially replaces the XC70 in the Volvo line up. Now that XC moniker is only used for SUVs. So where does this V90 fit in? Well it’s a more rugged off-road version of the V90 with a raised ride height - a rival for the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad. And with the latest generation of Volvo models now good enough to be seen as genuine premium cars - it’s a realistic alternative to the likes of the Audi and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain.

But where it has those two beat is on price. The V90 Cross Country starts at £40k new whereas the cheapest A6 Allroad is more than £47,000. It’s well equipped too with dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, navigation and a bright 12.3-inch colour touchscreen among the standard specification. While it may not come with a 3.0-litre engine like the Audi, the 2.0-litre diesel that’s used in both the D4 and D5 models is one of the best diesels around. It’s quiet, smooth and delivers excellent performance for its size.

In fact, the D5 is so good that it’s often easy to forget it’s only a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel. Official economy looks promising with a figure of more than 53mpg for both versions, so expect around 40mpg in real world driving. While it has four-wheel drive and rugged bumpers, the V90 Cross Country is no proper off-roader, but it does have a higher ride height than the standard V90 and makes an excellent tow car with the power to haul a 2.5 tonne braked trailer. The raised ride height means the Cross Country isn’t as good in corners as a standard V90 but it still drives extremely well with plenty of grip and a reassuring feel through the steering. The

impressively comfortable seats and well insulated cabin make this an ideal motorway car too. Only the ride lets it down somewhat. It’s on the firm side due to the tougher suspension and so is susceptible to the occasional jolt as it crosses potholes. The standard V90 rides better. But this is only a minor criticism of what is a very accomplished and impressive estate. The interior is a real strong point with a high quality and solid feel mixed with a minimalist Scandinavian design. The huge iPad-style touchpad in the dash adds to the feeling that this is a car with modern tech on board. And one that’s easily good enough to rival its premium competition.

In Automotive History Henry Ford II is commonly mistaken for Henry Ford’s child when in fact he is his grandson and the son of Edsel Ford, Henry Ford’s only child. It was on this day in 1956 that Henry Ford II resigned as the chairman of the Ford Foundation, a nonprofit set up by Edsel Ford as a way to basically escape certain taxes imposed by the FDR administration. The Ford Foundation, started in 1936, quickly became the richest charity in the country. It all started thanks to particular taxes called “soak the rich” which were forced on estates worth more than $50 million. The Ford Foundation would receive the bulk of the elder Henry Ford’s estate, as well as an endowment from Edsel’s, resulting in a 95 percent (non-voting) stake in Ford Motor Company valued at nearly $493 million. This ensured $25 million of dividends per year, making the Ford Foundation the richest charity in the USA by a large distance. For example, when Henry Ford died in 1947 the foundation saved the Ford Fam-

ily more than $321 million in inheritance taxes. This isn’t to say the foundation hasn’t done great things for society.. In the beginning it had a fairly vague mission statement, claiming it would give money “for scientific, educational and charitable purposes, all for the public welfare.” Until the founding of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 the Ford Foundation continually ranked as the highest giving US non-profit.

Party at the Pig Fight-Night Fighting against cancer is a term often heard in our daily lives. Almost every one of us has experienced some type of encounter with this awful disease; even if indirectly at some point in our lives. The fight continued at the “Pig N’ Whistle” (The Pig) for a charity fund raising event and at the same time, one fight was well and truly underway. The big-fight Boxing clash between two amazing fighters. The days leading up to the big-fight night on 29th April was not only exciting due the fact Antony Joshua was taking on one of the best Heavy-Weight champions of recent years, Valdamir Klitchko. But even more exciting because this spectacular boxing extravaganza was being screened live as part of the evenings entertainment at The Pig along with actor Patrick Murray (Mickey Pierce from Only Fools & Horses) fund raising for the Eva Carter Cancer Awareness Appeal. A night of fun hosted by Lee and Helen at The Pig with music, sport and the celebrity character Mickey Pearce was welcomed by all that attended with individual donations totalling 1,500 euros. The amazing turnout arrived early to ensure their place and to get warmed up for the 10pm arrival of Mickey Pearce, the pub had also been decorated to promote their new range of Armarda Cider and the crew from the drinks company came along to join in the fun and help the punters along to enjoy the three great new tastes of the gluten-free, low sugar cider drink. Whilst we are on the subject of great tasting drinks, we must mention that one of the big attractions to The Pig for many is the range of real Ales. Not only are they the only pub we know in Benidorm, the Costa Blanca but maybe even Spain

to serve a range of draught Ales. Currently Greene King IPA, Spitfire, and now the latest news is that they have Old Speckled Hen (5% abv.) The pub was also showing off it’s new refurbished entrance doors and windows that were suitably designed to retain the pubs traditional character but allow them to have live music and events with what is described as a perfect all round new sound system. The surround sound is perfect for live events, karaoke singalong’s and for us here at The Buzz, the sound is the real-deal when it comes to showing the big sporting events as it just enhances the atmosphere and gets the heart racing all at the same time. So when the famous face of Only Fools and Horses star Mickey Pearce came through the new doors, the crowd cheered and clapped whilst the famous TV show theme tune was played; he was greeted by a host of fans who were absolutely over the moon with the fact he was enjoying the night mingling and taking time to chat to the public as well as having photos with fans and signing photos of himself with Del Boy that was used to generate some welcomed donations to the cancer charity. Lee and Helen were overwhelmed at the generosity and actually sent us a message afterwards asking us to thank everyone who attended, a massive thank you for the donations and for making the night a massive success, together with their thanks and appreciation to the great hardworking team of bar staff who were really bouncing, keeping the drinks served and the crowd happy and safe. Now we have to finish off by saying that the icing on the cake was the most exciting boxing match that We have seen for many years. This

heavy weight clash of two amazing athletes was just incredible. A really enjoyable event full of thrills that had us engrossed for the entire eleven rounds. The crowd lapped up the excitement and the Armada Cider and real Ales were flowing. With all of this in mind, it is not a surprise that the talk of the old town is The Pig N’ Whistle Music Pub and it is official that the best kept secret of the Old Town Benidorm has now been well and truly uncovered. If you haven’t been to this popular venue, then we hope after reading this review on this truly amazing fund raising event, you will come along and meet Lee, Helen and The Pig crew for a really memorable experience. You may even catch us there having a cheeky pint of the Speckled Hen! See all the great photos and full info on Facebook (@pignwhistlemusicpub) and if you attended the fundraiser, make sure to share your photos, hit “Like” to keep up to date on the venue that has become The Pub of Benidorm old town.

With just a few weeks to go in the A.F.F.L. anyone of the top ten teams could still win the much sought after Trophy. At the moment Julie’s team The Gers have a 1 point advantage over Andrew’s Big Tymers.Former leaders Wayne’s Gunnawinitthisyear remain in 3rd spot just 10 points ahead of Billy Super Yids.I have a feeling that this Season’s Fantasy is going to go right down to the last game of the Season which is the F.A.Cup Final and teams with Players still involved are in with the best chance.El.Portet Elite picked up points at the bottom thanks to Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany’s rocket shot against woeful Crystal Palace.

Leo’s 6 in a Row moved a little closer to winning our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League when they extended their lead at the top over Ant & Brads team to 38 points.Rocky’s Super Spurs have replaced Hannah’s Hotspurs in 3rd place and have now got Ant & Brad’s team within their sights.Down at the foot of the table Anna’s Radji United have sunk without a trace and will need snookers to get out the bottom spot as they are now 73 points behind Nathan’s F2 Freestylers. In our Mark Carter Ladies Section the top three places remain the same with Julie’s team The Gers still in a strong position at the top with a 38 point advantage over Joanna’s Hup Hannah City.At the other end of the table Jo Jo Wants a Dog have fell further behind Angie’s Blues the gap now is 36 points.Nicky’s Liverbird 94 & Winnie’s team Winniespoons are both joint top in our 20 euro monthly voucher League which is sponsored by Quick Save the only British Supermarket in Albir. Both teams benefited from Liverpool having 2 games going into the mix last week.Shazza & Mads team 2 Fat Slags are in 3rd place just 5 points behind the 2 leaders. Lee’s Walkden Town failed to pick up any points this week leaving his team trailing the leaders by 25 points. Micky’s team Woodside have won this weeks breakfast for 2 at the 2 C’s in Alfaz after climbing up 24 place s to No 178 in the main League. Tony’s team Y.N.W.A. 21 top scored this week with a tally of 53 points whilst Ged’s team Chino’s Tigers had the lowest score of minus 1.Both teams will go into our Monthly Wine Draw which is sponsored by Wyn at Wyndham’s Bar in Albir. Costa Cobras RFC Successful Fun Day

On Saturday Costa Cobras RFC held their first fun day, we had quite a few juniors interested in joining, we are awaiting response from San Fulgencio town hall about earlier training times for them so watch this space! We also had more interest for the adults, the main reason for organising the day was so the local community got to try the sport out. It was difficult at times to get the kids to stop at the end, which was great. On top of this we managed to raise 175€ for AFA San Fulgencio Alzheimers charity, thanks to the hard work of all the clubs members and families, as well as all of the generous donations from the people who came to see the vice president getting waxed and buying the raffle tickets. A big thank you must also go to Lee Fox of Mercury FM and the San Fulgencio town

hall for letting us have the pitch free, and not forgetting Manolo for the bouncy castle. We now have lottery cards for sale. 10€ each for the Euro Millions, the card is valid till May 2018 and you have 2 draws per week, the cost of the card is split between the club and the charity, the Jackpot if won is shared between everyone in the syndicate, the Jackpot is 17,000,000€ and we have 170 cards for sale, so get them while you can. If you would like to come and join us we train at the football ground in San Fulgencio every Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00. Everybody is welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier. Why not come along and join the fun with the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. For more information about our club, or the lottery cards,

In a pulsating first leg of the play-off quarter final La Vila beat their Basque opponents 22-34. This gives them a 12 point lead for the next leg which is at home in their VilaJoyosa stadium on Sunday April 30th. Kick off is at12.00. Zarautz were no pushover scoring with a penalty which was quickly countered with two for La Vila. Another for La Vila and the score was 3-9. Zarautz then came back with a converted try

making it 10-9. Yet another for the Basque side made it 17-9 and La Vila were feeling the pressure. Just before half time they scored an unconverted try followed by a penalty which made it all square at 17-17. As I have written in the past La Vila are a team that can play fast and furious for the full 80 minutes which they showed to their advantage yet again. 2 converted tries and 1 try in the first 20 minutes of the second half saw

the score 17-34. The home side never gave up and came back just before the finish with a well deserved try. Scorers for La Vila were Fernandez (2), Martinez and Perez with the boot of Matias Jara adding the rest of the points. The Costa Blanca teams fared well in the play-offs with both Hospitalet and Les Abelles winning their home games. If Les Abelles can turn their 3 point advantage into an away win, the Valencian team will meet La Vila in the semi final.

Lions tour set to return in 2019 The Rugby Football League welcomes the announcement made today by the RLIF of the International Rugby League calendar until 2021. The four-year cycle, beginning in 2018, will include the visit of a touring side from New Zealand to Europe in 2018 and from Australia in 2020. The RLIF also announced that there will be a Lions Tour to the Southern Hemisphere in 2019. The final year of the next cycle, 2021, will feature the Men’s and Women’s Rugby League World Cups in England. Rugby Football League Chief Operating Officer, Ralph Rimmer, said: “The announcement made today by the RLIF

is incredibly exciting for Rugby League fans in England. It is great news that touring teams from New Zealand and Australia will visit these shores over the next three years and that there is the opportunity for a Lions tour to the Southern Hemisphere in 2019. “The RLIF have provided a good framework for us to begin planning an exciting four years of international Rugby League that will culminate with a World Cup here in England in 2021. We will now sit down with our partners over the coming months to finalise these plans.” Full details of the announcement can be found on the RLIF website.

Hull make inspired comeback

Jamie Shaul scored two tries in a man-of-the-match performance as Hull FC overturned a 22-point deficit to stun Widnes Vikings in Betfred Super League. Widnes made a fast start and were in total control with half-time approach-

ing, only for Hull to cross just before half-time and then immediately after to spark a remarkable comeback. The 33-22 victory moved Hull back to up to second while Widnes remain rooted to the foot of the table after their 10th defeat of the season.

Back in the top flight

THERE will be another Valencian team in football’s top flight next season after Levante UD won promotion to La Liga with over a month to spare. This signals an immediate return for Les Granotes who confirmed their return with a 1-0 defeat of Oviedo on 29 April, their

twenty third victory of the season. Fans agree that their team have been efficient rather than pretty to watch this season and many would agree that a 1-0 win to confirm promotion is quite appropriate – however few if any of them are complaining.

Harry Redknapp wants Birmingham job Harry Redknapp has confirmed he wants the Birmingham manager’s job if the owners back him with investment for transfers. The former West Ham, Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers boss arrived at St Andrew’s for talks with Birmingham’s owners on Tuesday afternoon, having steered the club to safety in the Sky Bet Championship with a 1-0 win away at Bristol City on the final day of the season. Redknapp won two of his three games - equalling the number of victories his

predecessor Gianfranco Zola managed in 24 games - and despite admitting he “doesn’t need to be chasing work”, the 70-year-old is interested in taking the job on for next season. Asked if he wants the Birmingham job, Redknapp said “Yes, if everything is right. The owners are nice people, having met them I was really impressed so yeah I’m interested On what assurances he would need to take the job, Redknapp added: “Just that they [Birmingham’s owners] are looking to invest and to

crack on. Redknapp still lives in Dorset and has been regularly commuting up to the Midlands while overseeing the first-

team squad during his short time in charge, but the exPortsmouth boss revealed he would need to up sticks if he were to sign full time.

Lewis Aims To Get Back On Top In Spain weekend in both qualifying and the race,” Wolff said in a preview for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, the fifth round of the season, in Barcelona. “We have spent our time since then unpicking what happened to understand why we couldn’t get the car in the right window (of performance) so he could feel comfortable with it,” added the Austrian. “There are no magic bullets to understanding that, just a lot of hard work and attention to detail. We must give him the tools he needs to do the job in the next races and that will be a big focus for us.” Hamilton failed to finish in Spain last year after colliding with

then-team mate Nico Rosberg at the start, a clash that allowed Red Bull’s Dutch teenager Max Verstappen to win. This season, Ferrari and Mercedes have each won two races so far. Wolff said Mercedes,

who lead Ferrari in the constructors’ standings by a single point, needed to make plenty of improvements. “The prevailing feeling is that there is lots of homework to do to come back stronger with a car that can

perform on a consistent level every weekend,” he said. “I have the feeling that we are moving in the right direction, but we need 24/7 shifts to achieve our ultimate targets.”

PUZZLE ANSWERS

Formula One champions Mercedes have no “magic bullets” to solve the problems that slowed Lewis Hamilton in Russia last month, but they are focusing on finding a solution, team boss Toto Wolff said on Monday. Hamilton started and finished fourth in Sochi on April 30, ending a run of eight successive appearances on the podium. The triple world champion was left puzzling over “a very odd weekend”. The Briton had complained of his Mercedes overheating from early on. He ended up finishing 36 seconds behind team mate Valtteri Bottas, who took the first win of his Formula One career. “Lewis had a difficult

Ibrahimovic Salary Revealed

Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the highestpaid player in the Premier League on £367 640 a week when he moved to Manchester United last summer. Astonishing details of the contracts agreed between United and agent Mino Raiola for Ibrahimovic were revealed in a book published in Germany on Tuesday. Fans will be fascinated by the huge figures which are divulged in Football Leaks: The Dirty Business of Football, based on the research of Der Spiegel journalists Rafael Buschmann and Michael Wulzinger.. In addition to his £19m-a-year salary, Ibrahimovic also secured a bonus of £2.86m for scoring 28 goals in his first year in England. However, the knee injury he suffered in the Europa League against Anderlecht last month may cost him the guarantee of a second year at Old Trafford. It is claimed that the contract extension would only have been triggered if Ibrahimovic had made 31 Premier League starts — he fell short on 27 — and United finished in the top three. The 35-year-old Swede had knee surgery last week and could be out of action until 2018. United are open to the idea of the striker doing his rehabilitation with them but it remains to be seen if he plays for United again. Signing Ibrahimovic on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain enabled United to offer

him such generous personal terms. Pogba, on the other hand, cost a record fee when he returned to Old Trafford and his deal is structured rather differently. The Frenchman’s £165,000-a-week basic salary may seem modest in comparison to those of some of the world’s top players but there are substantial incentives built into an exhaustive 41-page contract, particularly if United qualify for the Champions League. His basic wage would rise by £1.875m a year and his commercial rights would go up from £2.87m to £3.125m. From next season, he is also due a loyalty bonus which starts at just under £3.5m, and there are a raft of other incentives that would elevate him among world football’s highest earners. Unlike Ibrahimovic, Pogba has struggled to live up to expectations at times this season. Arguably the biggest beneficiary from last summer’s transfer dealings at Old Trafford is Raiola. The Italian agent’s earnings from the Pogba deal alone are said to be over £41m — a near £23m slice of the transfer fee and five instalments totalling £16.39m from United over the course of his five-year contract until 2020. It is also claimed that the club paid £2.2m owed by Pogba to Raiola’s Monaco-based agency Uuniqq SARL. When the figures were put to United, the club said that they do not comment on their

All-new Mcllroy at Sawgrass Rory McIlroy returns to action at The Players Championship with an entirely new equipment set-up after announcing he had signed a deal with TaylorMade. The significant changes are a reaction to his disappointing performance at the Masters, after which he went through some “extensive” club and ball testing before taking time away from golf for his wedding to long-time partner Erica Stoll. McIlroy has changed every club in his bag and has also opted to put the TaylorMade TP5x ball

into play at TPC Sawgrass this week, and the world No 2 believes his all-new set-up will help him regain the world No 1 ranking from Dustin Johnson, who he will play alongside for the opening two rounds this week. ”I’m really excited that I have teamed up with TaylorMade,” he said at his pre-tournament press conference. “I needed to address a few issues after Augusta, and I alluded to the fact that I wasn’t really happy with the golf ball I was playing and I needed to do something.

contractual arrangements. They are all the more startling given that the defeat at Arsenal on Sunday has all but killed off their hopes of a top-four finish. Failure to reach the Champions League could cost the club as much as £65m in lost television revenue and prize money. United would also forfeit more than £20m of their £750m kit deal with adidas.

Buzz Sport Fury waits on UKAD verdict

Tyson Fury is waiting to discover if he is closer to a boxing return after attending a UK Anti-Doping hearing on Monday. Fury is targeting a comeback fight on July 8, providing he overturns a suspended drugs ban, and the former heavyweight champion left the meeting

shortly after 5pm on Monday. The former heavyweight champion has not fought since ending the 10-year reign of Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, due to a combination of drug issues and mental health concerns. The 28-year-old wants

to fight Anthony Joshua in an all-British heavyweight showdown after his fellow undefeated heavyweight’s thrilling win over Klitschko last month. Fury claims that Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has already pencilled in a fight between the pair in April 2018.
