Happy ending in missing pensioner

AS concern for the welfare of a man who went missing in Benidorm grew, there has been a happy outcome after he was discovered safe and well in the resort. 65 year old Donald Cheetham from Redcar in the UK was holidaying alone in Benidorm and was due to fly home on 12 May. However he did not board the flight
and when it was found that his luggage was still in his hotel, friends and family used social media to start a search. Last week Donald was found wandering along a road in the town by Paul Spencer, and it transpired that he had forgotten where his original hotel was and had booked into a new one. He is said to be in a slightly
confused state but otherwise c o m p l e t e l y u n h a r m e d . Cleveland Police, who were also involved in the search, posted on Facebook on 19 May “Redcar man Donald Cheetham, who was reported as missing in Benidorm, has
been found safe and well. Thank you to everyone who shared the post.”
Jail term requested for balcony mum

THE preliminary hearings have started in the case of a mother whose six year old child managed to dangle herself from a seventh floor balcony of their home while she was left alone in the house. Prosecutors have asked for a two year prison sentence for the crime of child
abandonment, while the defence thinks that she should not have a case to answer, although she has admitted that her actions were a mistake. The mother had left her child alone at around 10pm while she went to the gym for around fifteen minutes. The child somehow got
out onto the balcony and appeared to be in danger of falling while fire services tried to get to her after they had been alerted by neighbours. At this stage the mother returned home and was able to enter the apartment and reach her child who was shaken but unhurt.

A fight broke out between animal rights protestors and circus employees in Aspe, forcing the Guardia Civil to intervene. The group of young protestors were distributing l e a f l e t s highlighting what they perceive as the cruel treatment of animals at these events, although Aspe is one of several towns that have banned the use of animals at shows in the area.
Things got out of hand after the protest group had reason to believe that two lions were being kept in a truck, something backed up by a video they made. This led to scuffles between the two groups, although both sides claim that the others started the incident. It is reported that the lions have been taken to the rescue centre for exotic animals at Villena.
Body may be missing backpacker By Simon Russell
THE mystery of what happened to a Spanish tourist who disappeared in Brazil two years ago may have finally been solved although with a tragic outcome. 27 year old Ferrara Tormo was last heard from in December 2015 when he was backpacking in the Bahia area of Brazil. His family contacted the authorities and even offered a reward for information about the whereabouts of Ferrara. However no trace of him was found and the
trail went cold until a rucksack was discovered in April this year. The pack belonged to Ferrara and included a diary with an entry stating he had suffered a bad accident. Using information from the diary Brazilian police were able to retrace what they think may have been his route. This search found a body and although DNA tests need to confirm this, it is assumed that this belongs to Ferrara. According to his diary the injuries
were received after he fell from a waterfall and

UK Terror Threat Highest Level

Twenty two people were tragically killed while 59 others were injured in the suicide bombing during an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester UK. Emergency services were called to the arena shortly after 10.30pm on Monday evening. British security services’ have raised the UK terror threat level
from “Severe” to “Critical” meaning that the UK’s army can deploy up to 5,000 troops across “sensitive” security locations such as the Houses of Parliament in the wake of the Manchester terror attack. The decision to raise the terror threat to its highest level came from Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) and means “an attack is expected imminently,” Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Tuesday evening (23 May). The threat level has only hit “Critical” twice before since its introduction in 2006 – the first time in reaction to the foiled transatlantic
aircraft plot when terrorists planned to use liquid explosive devices. The second was in response to two cars laden with explosives being discovered outside a nightclub in London’s Haymarket in 2007. King Philipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has offered his condolences and support to the victims of the Manchester terror attacks. It’s not yet known if anyone from Spain has been injured or killed in the incident. The Spanish Embassy has set up an emergency telephone number for those with concerns. Spanish first for Netflix

DIGITAL TV giant Netflix has debuted its first Spanish series specifically produced for the channel. “Las Chicas del Cable” or cable girls, is set in the fledgling telecommunications industry in 1928. Created by Spanish production company Bambu it centres on four female cable operators in a Madrid based phone company, Spain’s first telecoms firm. Filmed on location in Madrid with a mainly Spanish cast it has been well received by viewers, with Madrid itself being seen as one of the stars of the show. It portrays young women in at the beginning of what
was to become one of the planet’s largest industries within a few years. It is also seen as a feminist production by many, for its portrayal of a new sector of business that depended heavily on female staff to operate.

ALICANTE City has installed its first charging point for electric vehicles while there are plans to introduce another five to ten across the city by the end of the year. The first point is located at 25 Avenida Alfonso El Sabio and is free to use. The charge will give a range of about 100 kilometres depending on the vehicle, and last for about two hours. Drivers need to book a recharging slot by using a phone app that has been set up for this purpose. Alicante has around 400 electric cars currently registered and the number is expected to increase dramatically in the next few years, helped along by the installation of city wide charging points.

Cycling tragedy may bring about change in the law

RAKEL Cernicharo, a local restaurateur and chef, has won the fourth series of the hugely popular cookery programme “Top Chef”. She defeated rival Victor Gutiérrez from Salamanca after cooking a special meal for 25 specially selected members of the public. These 25 had the final decision on the winner which had been judged by a professional panel up to this stage of the competition. Cernicharo made few friends among other contestants throughout the show but let her food do the talking on the final day of judging. Rakel’s Valencian establishment, “Kakara”, is already a popular destination for foodies and is sure to get a boost after her win.
GREGORIO Serrano, head of the country’s DGT traffic department, has called for repeat offending drunk drivers to face stronger penalties. This follows on from the accident earlier this month between Oliva and Denia where a driver killed three cyclists while under the influence of alcohol. The female driver had also consumed drugs and had previously been convicted of driving under the influence of both substances back in 2013. Mr Serrano said “The number of cyclists who die every weekend (on Spanish roads) is unbearable. We cannot keep having people going for a simple bike ride and not returning home alive.” Meanwhile
another cyclist died on Valencia’s roads on after a 60 year old man was found lying on the road near Lliria Benisano on 17
May. However, although this has not yet been confirmed it is believed he died of natural causes while cycling and that
no other vehicles were involved. An autopsy is to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

Prison time requested for playboy

PROSECUTORS have requested a five year prison sentence for a young millionaire businessman who was participating in illegal road races using performance cars such as an Aston Martin and a BMW M3. Javier Martinez already
has convictions for reckless driving and has been accused of being one of the drivers in the road races in Elche, Albacete, Alcala del Jucar and Almansa, all in urban areas and with a blatant disregard for the safety of others. Martinez
is co-founder and director of Alicante firm Hawker’s sunglasses. He has recently been the centre of another car based controversy after continually parking his Ferrari in not one but two spaces designated for disabled drivers in Elche.
Martinez was far from contrite in his response saying he needed two spaces so drivers did not open their doors onto his car. Payment of fines would not have posed a problem for Martinez who has an estimated wealth of well over a million euros.

Scuba tragedy

A 60 year old man died while diving off the Valencian coast, authorities have confirmed. The incident happened on 16 May while the man who was a regular diver was in the water off Arenal Perellonte where he frequently went to dive.
His wife was accompanying him and noticed that he was not moving in the water. An emergency ambulance attended the scene but he was already dead by the time they arrived. The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation into the man’s death.

Hen party mum loses fight for life

A British woman who collapsed suddenly in Benidorm on 29 April has lost her fight for life, her husband confirmed on a Facebook post. 48 year old Mandy Farrell from Radcliffe near Manchester was on a hen party but was drinking nothing stronger than coffee when she felt ill. Her condition rapidly worsened and a brain aneurysm was diagnosed. Her family, husband Paul and children Kieran and Olivia flew out to Spain to be at Mandy’s bedside at Benidorm’s Levante hospital although she sadly passed away after nearly two weeks in intensive care. Her son Kieran said “I know there are going to be a lot of heartbroken people but Mum wouldn’t want that. Thank you to each person that left messages of support because that’s what kept her going for thirteen days.”
Run causes road chaos

THE eighth Alicante City half marathon was held on Sunday 14 May, although many road users were unhappy with the effect the event had on the city’s traffic. Dozens of minor and major streets were closed for the race and the city centre was inaccessible. The marathon effectively cut the city in half,
with access from one side to the other being impossible for the duration of the race, even for residents who were merely trying to get home. Alternative routes were clogged with traffic as vehicles were diverted around the race which was organised by Alicante’s Department of Sports.
Alzheimer’s assault

A carer of a 69 year old woman with Alzheimer’s disease has been charged with her assault by police in Valencia. A neighbour whose balcony overlooked the
house of the victim witnessed what appeared to be an attack and alerted the authorities. He said he had seen the woman being kicked, dragged and having her pulled by another female.
Police arrived at the apartment to find the older woman lying on the floor in obvious distress and arrested her 61 year old Colombian carer and charged her with abuse.

Virus avoided

ISSUES with the “ransomware” computer virus which struck operating systems worldwide earlier in May were largely avoided in Alicante. However there were disruptions in the Department of Justice, who had been advised that their systems were vulnerable and decided to temporarily disable their network servers as a precaution. This increased the workload for the Department but they were
able to largely manage without the systems. Government computers across the region reported thousands of attempted attacks on their computer systems but all were successfully repelled by anti-virus software. Alicante’s health service reported no problems caused by the virus, in contrast to the UK’s NHS which was badly affected by the bug, causing major disruption for patients and staff across the UK.
History underfoot

EXCAVATION work under Villajoyosa’s Plaza de la Generalitat has uncovered a house believed to date from the sixteenth or seventeenth century. The work was being done to improve the drainage network after storm damage but has been suspended while the find is evaluated. On the excavated building, you can clearly see two rooms with walls made from masonry and limestone plus a doorframe. The dig has also uncovered what appears to be a rubbish tip dating back from
the Roman-Iberia era, probably from the fourth century AD. This contains various materials from that era such as ceramics, lamps and bone needle decorations. Both the Mayor and Councillor for Culture have been along to view the discoveries themselves and archaeologists will now determine their importance.
Studying for night-owls

OLIVA’S Youth Centre is staying open until the small hours for the next three weeks to allow the town’s pupils to study in peace and quiet. The centre will be staying open until 2am on weekdays until 9 June, the Education Department have announced. The initiative, entitled “Estudia en Pau”, or Study in Peace, coincides with older
students busy exam season and recognises that not every house is a suitable place for studying in the evenings. The Education Department have also extended the Oliva Library’s opening hours until 7 July with it being open from 9am to 10pm Monday to Saturday (including lunchtimes) and from 9am to 2pm on Sundays.

Controlling the wetlands

THE Environmental Protection Office has started work in the Senillar wetlands around Teulada. The plan is to control the water level in the fragile ecosystem which will be done by methods such as installing sewer ports. A team of scientists from Valencia University will be leading the work and will also be trying to find out more about the area. The Senillar wet-
lands have been officially protected since 2014 which has prompted the work aimed at regulating and preserving the area.
New courts for Alcoy

VALENCIA’S Justice Minister, Gabriela Bravo, visited the new courtroom in Alcoy which she herself signed off on last year. The new court is over 3,000m2 and ideally located on Plaza Mare de Deu. It occupies a previously run down building which the Justice
Ministry paid to renovate in exchange for a year’s free rental. Alcoy has long expressed a need for this extra courtroom and continues to lobby for a further court to meet the town’s growing demands in a judicial area that includes outlying smaller towns and urbanizations.

Toddler gravely ill after pool incident

A child of three was rushed to Denia Hospital after falling into a swimming pool in the area. The youngster’s condition has been described as serious and he had to be resuscitated after the incident which occurred on the afternoon of 17 May. As Denia’s hospital has no specialist paediatric
intensive care unit, he was later moved to Valencia’s Santa Fe Hospital which has the required facilities. It is not clear how the child came to be in the pool, however the authorities praised the swift action of both the police and members of the public which preventing the child from drowning.

THE crematorium at Denia is introducing an online system that allows people unable to attend a funeral service to view the proceedings on their PC or phone. Family of the departed will control the privacy settings on the application so that the ceremony can be anything from available to all or just a selected few. The application is particularly aimed at people who are unable to attend for reasons such as health or distance and will also allow anyone who attended the service to watch it back at any time they want. A similar system already operates in Torrevieja and Almeria and has proven very popular.
ARGUABLY the biggest such event on the Costa Blanca, the Moors and Christians Festival comes to the municipality of Moraira and Teulada on the 3rd June. The main events start on 10th June and run until the 19th while preceding events include the annual Moraira Music Festival. This is held on Sunday 4 June at 6pm by the castle and runs until the small hours. Acts and groups featured this year include Bella Luna, Steve Delaney, Shondell Mims and The Brink Band. The main fiesta itself starts at 7.30pm on 10th June with the opening of the Medieval Market and has events far too numerous to mention here until the festival closes with a Gala Parade at 7pm on 19th June; however www. morairaonline24.com has all the details. For those of you not aware or are on holiday over here, the Moors and
Christians fiestas take place in towns up and down the Costa Blanca at different times of the year. They are held to commemorate the occupation of Spain by the North African Moors that started in 710AD and their routing by Christian forces some 500 years later. Unsurprisingly such a long occupation left its mark on Spain and is still
reflected in everything from architecture to culture. However the festival is very much a fun event with parades led by groups dressed as Moors and Christians alike-with the piratical Moorish outfits proving popular amongst younger participants in particular. Definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been before.

Lucky escape after roof collapes Bus ban

THE sudden collapse of a roof on an apartment block in Orihuela has left four families temporarily homeless, although thankfully no-one was hurt in the incident. A family, including a pregnant woman, lived in the apartment directly below the roof although they were out at the time of the collapse. However the pregnant woman had been in the residence until just before the incident and

was lucky to avoid a tragedy. Firefighters came to the building to assess the damage and the area was cordoned off to pedestrians and vehicles. It is hoped most of the residents affected can return shortly, but those close to the accident may have to wait some time.

the Straits of Gibraltar. Clearly visible from the shore, the whales are quite a common sight further north in Alicante but are unusual in this stretch of the Mediterranean Sea. The whales were travelling at about 12 knots per hour as they made their way to the waters around Gibraltar.
AS part of the ongoing pedestrianization of Elche’s Calle Corredora, buses will no longer be able to use the street, a measure which is now in effect. This follows restrictions on when other vehicles can use the road, with the exception of residents with mobility problems who require access. Alternative stops have been arranged for the redirected buses on Calles Juan Ramon Jiminez and Eugeni d’Ors. After discussion with local traders, the council will also be installing around twice as many signs indicating where the local car parks near the street are. Shops and other businesses on Calle Corredora have previously expressed concerns about the impact on their trading of the street being pedestrianized.

THOSE of you on holiday or new to the area may be surprised to hear that the second largest density of Norwegian’s abroad (after London) is in a small town just outside Benidorm. Alfaz del Pi has at least 4,000 Norwegian residents out of a total population of 22,000, and each year they celebrate their National Day on the streets of the town. For the last 46 years Alfaz has taken on a distinctly Nordic feel as Norway Day is celebrated on 17 May. The Norwegian consul attended the party and read out a telegram from King Harald V emphasising the strong ties between his homeland and the Alicante province. Regional costumes, food and speeches were all in evidence and only the weather made you realise that you weren’t on the streets of a Norwegian town. The day itself marks the anniversary of the country’s constitution being first drawn up in 1813 and is celebrated by expat Norwegians worldwide.
Making their voices heard

REPRESENTATIVES of Town Halls from around the region attended the inaugural meeting in Benidorm of “Women’s Voices” an association set up to help victims of gender violence. As well as Benidorm, Polop, L’Alfaz del Pi, Callosa d’en Sarria, Finestrat, Villajoyosa, La Nucia and Altea were all represented. The group aims to both inform and help victims and potential victims of gender violence in the Marina Baixa.

Callosa’s Councillor for Equality Rosa Savall, who attended, said “This is a pioneering regional initiative which we should all lend our help and support to. We need to end once and for all the social scourge that is gender violence.” The meeting was held in Benidorm’s Town Hall although a permanent venue is still to be decided. For the time being the plan is to switch the meeting between different municipalities in the area.
BENIDORM Mayor Toni Perez has said that his council have submitted all the required paperwork concerning the proposed new health centre for the Rincon de Loix. They are now waiting on the Valencian Generalitat to move things forward, although there have been delays caused by the Generalitat’s Health Department submitting some inaccurate paperwork which now needs to be corrected or resubmitted, said Mr Perez. The plot for the health centre has been identified and confirmed as suitable, so for the time being matters are in the hands of the Generalitat.

Death plunge victim’s husband wants answers

ADAM Maxwell, the husband of Kirsty Maxwell who fell to her death from a balcony in Benidorm recently, has told the UK media that “something dark happened in that room” on the night Kirsty died. The room in question was the hotel room his wife fell to her death from which had five men in it, none of them
known to Kirsty before she went to Benidorm for a hen party. Adam said that suggestions that she either killed herself or was on drugs are completely incompatible with the young woman he knew who didn’t even smoke. He described the five men’s statements as suspicious and contradictory and
expressed his astonishment that Spanish authorities allowed them to return to the UK. The case still appears to have more theories than answers, with sleepwalking being looked into as another possible cause of Kirsty’s tragic death.

Stemming the flow

BENIDORM Town Hall has published plans to alleviate the flooding which sometimes occurs in the vicinity of the Lope de Vega School in the Rincon de Loix. One of the businesses worst affected by the flooding has been the La Torreta campsite, something leading to the revocation of its licence, a decision the sites owners, which include former mayor Salvador Moll, are challenging. The site had been judged a danger to
users after severe flooding in last December’s storms. If fully agreed the drainage and channelling project will cost just over €1 million to complete.

A crowd that Mayor Jaume Llinares described as the largest he has seen in Altea watched a special production of “ Fr a n k e n s t e i n at the Beach” earlier this month. Staged as part of the towns 400th anniversary celebrations, the event was primarily organised and run by some 1,500 secondary age pupils and their teachers from Valencia, Catalonia and the Balearics. Several thousand people came
to watch the show at the Algar car park where a giant screen had been erected for the occasion. Mayor Llinares offered his thanks to everyone involved in the spectacular show as well as the police and civil protection groups who ensured the whole thing was trouble free.

Medieval makeover

THE Magic Hotel chain which is based in Benidorm and has several hotels there has refurbished and upgraded two of its establishments. The Excalibur in Alfaz del Pi has been given a medieval
theme and renamed the Magic Robin Hood. The former Monika Hotel in La Cala Finestrat has been given a Caribbean theme and renamed the Magic Tropical Splash and includes
a state of the art water park and large video game area for kids of all ages. Both reopened their doors at the beginning of this month, in plenty of time for Benidorm’s summer season.
A park for everyone

LA Cala is to construct a children’s playground that will have equipment specially adapted for children with disabilities or mobility problems. This was one of the pledges of the Ciudadanos party and their spokesman said “this action continues our efforts to adapt Benidorm’s parks so they are suitable for all children.” The project will cost €15,000 and has a completion deadline of the end of June although it is hoped the work will be completed in time for the start of the summer. La Cala Park is the site for the new area, conveniently close to two schools.
Civil war pillbox to be restored

A machine gun pillbox emplacement in Altea dating back to the Civil War is to be fully renovated. The building stands on the seafront and has become weather worn and daubed with graffiti over the years. The towns Department of Planning said that when the restoration work is completed the structure will be opened to the public, although it is currently closed off. Councillor Imma Orozco described the
emplacement as an important part of the town’s heritage, however uncomfortable some people may be about the Civil War. It also stands as a reminder of Altea’s role in the conflict which ran from 1936 to 1939.

Demand for Spanish property coming from at home and abroad Growing demand from homes in Spain from domestic and foreign buyers boosted the property market in Spain although prices have fallen slightly. The activity is regarded as good news for the recovery of the country’s real estate market with sales buoyant According to the latest figures from the Notaries Association in Spain, sales increased by 19.5% in March compared with the same month in 2016. But the new homes market is not doing as well, with the figures showing that sales of new builds
were down by 11.5%. Apartment sales were up by 20.5% and family homes up by 15.6%. Overall prices fell by 1.3% to €1,277 per square meter, driven by a decline of 6.2% in the price of single family homes of -6.2%, while apartment price remained unchanged. However, when subsidised housing is excluded, the average price of a flat sold in March rose by 0.3%. ‘The notaries’ housing market figures are the most timely we have, and show that the recovery in sales continues unabated, though the average price shows little enthusi-
asm for getting off the ground,’ said Mark Stucklin of Spanish Property Insight. ‘Bear in mind the average price disguises wide regional variations,
with prices surging in hot markets like Barcelona and the Balearics, whilst continuing to decline in large parts of the Spanish interior,’ he added.

Spanish Marinated Red pepper Beef burgers Barbeque Chicken
This delicately spicy marinade for chicken is great for barbecue cooking and is a fantastic, simple dish full of flavour and summer tones. Serve with a crisp green salad and new potatoes for a filling outdoor lunch. Marinated barbeque chicken: -Mix all of the herbs and spices together. -Add the sugar, lemon juice, onion, garlic, vinegar and olive oil, mix well. -You can add a little white wine if it is too dry. -Add the chicken and ensure a good covering. Leave to marinade in the fridge for at least 2 hours. -Barbecue for around 20 – 30 minutes until cooked through
INGREDIENTS
4 – 6 chicken legs separated into thighs and drumsticks Half cup of extra virgin olive oil ½ onion, peeled and finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed Juice of half a lemon Splash of wine vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar ¼ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon chopped dried chilli ½ teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon salt
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6. Put the pepper on a baking tray and rub with 1/2 tbsp oil. Roast in the oven for 25-30 mins, turning once halfway through. Remove and allow to cool slightly before finely chopping. Tip the mince, roasted pepper, egg, carrot and breadcrumbs into a large bowl and mix well. Using your hands, shape the mixture into six equal burgers. Heat the remaining oil in a large, heavy-based, non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the burgers for 5-6 mins each side until cooked through. Top with slices of cheddar. Spread the rolls with mayo, add the burgers and top with slices of cucumber.

On Friday evening 19th May at 7.30pm Jalon Valley ARC had a telephone call from a distraught Spanish lady who, whilst taking her rubbish to the bins, was alerted by movement in a cardboard box. The box was secure and upon opening she found a Siamese type female with 6 kittens. Next to the box was a child’s suitcase and on closer inspection the lady found another cat was inside. She quickly put them in the car and raced to Jalon and
stopped at Faula Pet shop and Tanya called us. The cats and kittens were very lethargic due to overheating and cramped conditions. They were taken to Bernia vets who kept one female for treatment. All the others are in our care and after food, water and rest are doing really well. The other cat is now back with us. The sad thing is these are “PET” cats and the kittens are used to human touch, the adult females are in excellent condition albeit a
little traumatised, but in time will settle. The ARC is now over full and urgently looking for foster or forever homes for a total of 11 kittens and adult cats. The 6 ‘BOX’ kittens are 3 black and 3 black and white. Only one girl amongst them. Type 2 Diabetes - There are estimated to be millions of people with undiagnosed Diabetes, are you one of them? Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high. There are two main types of diabetes – type 1 and type 2. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or the body is unable to use the insulin that is produced. The pancreas (a large gland behind the stomach) produces the hormone insulin, which moves glucose from your blood into your cells where it is converted into energy. This is because it releases chemicals that can upset the body’s cardiovascular and metabolic systems. • Ethnicity – being of south Asian, Chinese, African-Caribbean or black African origin (even if born in europe) Other risks Your risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also increased if your blood glucose level is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. This is sometimes called “pre-diabetes” or impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). If you are concerned that you might be at risk a simple blood test can check your blood sugar and relieve your mind. Once more unto the beach - the craft market in Jávea port
Sunday 28 May will be the last time that the little craft fair in the square by the sea front at the end of Avenida Jaime I in the port (Puerto) of Jávea, will be set up in the morning. After that they take a short break and on Friday the 9th of June they will come back, but now in the afternoons and they will stay the whole summer. For the fifth year running Amata (the regional craft association) joins forces with the local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front with a craft fair. A real craft fair, with real craft workers who make what they sell and hope to sell what they make. Not for nothing has Amata chosen the slogan “Artesanía de Autor®” to announce their fairs, which means that what you see is made by the
man or woman on the stall - nothing imported, nothing made by friends or from a small factory. The stalls can vary from week to week but you will find stalls with leather bags, leather belts, original lamps from recycled material, rag dolls, wooden toys and puppets, jewelry from silver, copper, ceramics, macramé or dried orange peel, hand painted designer clothes and even some paintings and sculptures. Many of the people on the stalls bring their tools and can add a name or a detail to a chosen item, or, if you can wait a few days, you can get them to make something to order. Amata was set up in 1998 and remains true to its original philosophy, which is that only goods made by the people on the stalls
can be sold on the craft fairs it organizes - not something that can be said of many other craft fairs. That is why more and more aficionados have come to appreciate this special quality - the quality of a gallery even if it is sold in the street from a stall. Different stalls come for the whole summer, or just a few weeks so as to combine a few weeks at the beach with the possibility of earning a living. It’s a varied show, week by week. Never boring. A visit to the market can be combined with a stroll to the port (with its fishing boats and fish market) and back along the promenade with its attractive bars and restaurants, shops and terraces, to enjoy the cool sea breezes and watch all the other visitors walking, jogging and cycling along. And, if you like modern architecture, you can have a look at the Virgen de Loreto church, a concrete structure shaped like a ship! The market starts on 9 June; in the beginning it opens only in the weekend, but from Thursday the 22nd of June they are
there every evening till 6 September (except for a few days when the locals celebrate their fiestas) and opens at 7 in the evening till midnight. U3A Vall Del Pop Support Jalon Valley Help The Vall del Pop U3A group supported Jalon Valley Help [JVH] at their 25th Anniversary May Fayre in Jalon on Sunday 14th May with performances from the Casual Choir and the Line Dancing Team, and just by manning a few stalls to promote and sell the U3A’s Writers Group book “All in the Mix”, the Casual Choir’s recent Beatles CD and the game of skill “Hook a Ball”. The U3A Casual Choir, under their new Musical Director Philip Ashley, gave their first performance of the year, performing a medley of pop music hits, including numbers from the Beatles and US artists. The choir were elegantly decked out in smart new waistcoats and presented their songs with the slickness of performance we have come to expect from them. We look forward to their usual continued development of the repertory in readiness for the autumn and winter concert season. The U3A Line Dancing team, led by Rosita Spark-
es, gave a fine demonstration of their skills to a selection of different tunes with various combinations of integrated technical steps. The enthusiasm of the group was clear for all to see, with their premier danseur´ [or etoile] leading the way for others to follow – come on men let´s see more of you in the team next year. Local Freemasons Celebrate Ladies Night
On Saturday, 25th May, local Freemasons from Arenal Deportiva Lodge No 65 celebrated their annual Ladies Night in style at Satari’s restaurant in Moraira. Arriving for a cava and canape reception, at seven fifteen, almost seventy Masons, Ladies and guests arrived to a glorious summer evening and chatted among the flowers and bougainvillaea’s of the restaurant. At eight o’clock they entered the restaurant for what turned out to be a fantastic four course meal prepared by the owner, Abi Satari, which included a wide selection of well prepared and well cooked food, including a delicious starter consisting of Persian specialities. During the meal the guests were entertained by the internationally renowned, and always popular, Ian Henry who played a wide variety of tunes on the piano and sang beautifully. Later, after dinner, many of the guests danced to more music
and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There were gifts and flowers for all of the Ladies as a small thank you for all the support they have given over the past year. The evening was hosted by the President of the Festival, WBro Bob Bullingham and his lovely wife Avril. This was a great chance for Bob and all the Masons of the Lodge to relax after a hard years work. This is Bob’s last formal event as Master of the Lodge as very soon at the beginning of June he will be installing his successor, WBro Ian Brown to take his place.

Is it the end of the road for QROPS?

QROPS, or Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes, are a type of overseas pension that have been a popular option over the last 10 years with British expats, so why are Chorus not recommending them as the default option to our clients? QROPS used to offer several benefits over UK based pensions as a transfer option if you lived abroad, but recent changes in legislation have equalised the benefits of transferring to a UK based pension, rather than a QROPS. In addition, HMRC have removed 9 countries and over 30% of existing QROPS providers from their approved list, and introduced new legislation that could lead to a potential tax charge of 25% for new QROPS applications received after March 9th 2017. So, what is the alternative? At Chorus we recommend you consider a UK based pension called a SIPP. A SIPP offers all the main benefits of a QROPS – flexible access from 55, passing on more to your loved ones, consolidating multiple pensions into one plan – but benefit from lower fees and the protection offered by UK FCA regulation coupled with the Financial Services
Compensation S c h e m e , neither of which are available with a QROPS. SIPPs are often cheaper and are subject to far stricter regulation than QROPS, including full transparent charging, and strict rules for the investments held within your pension. This can lead to substantially reduced annual costs, often saving clients thousands of pounds a year, and leading to superior growth of your pension funds. It is worth bearing in mind that many financial advisors in Spain do not have the correct licenses or regulation required to recommend a SIPP so may only use QROPS, even if it is not necessarily the best option for you. We would always recommend getting a second opinion and work with UK regulated pension experts to ensure you receive the best advice.

Pound exchange rates dip as Conservative lead narrows With the Conservative’s lead over labour falling in the latest polls, the pound edged lower as a new week of trading began. Monday’s pound losses were largely due to the news that the latest polls relating to the fast-approaching UK general election revealed a decline in the Conservative lead following the publication of the party manifestos. According to Reuters; ‘May had been on course for a landslide with a majority of up to 150 seats, opinion polls had indicated in the early stages of campaigning ahead of the June 8 national vote. Four polls on Saturday however showed the Conservatives with an expected vote share of between 44 and
46 percent, still easily ahead of the Labour Party on 33 to 35 percent, but pointing to a smaller projected majority of about 40 seats.’ As a greater Conservative majority is expected to improve the UK’s hand in Brexit negotiations, the news that the outcome might be tighter
than previously projected left Sterling struggling. The pound recorded losses against all the majors and fell back below $1.30 against the US dollar after previously benefiting from dovish interest rate related comments from a Federal Reserve official. GBP/EUR was also
floundering thanks to the news that Greek MPs had supported the introduction of more austerity in order to receive the nation’s next batch of financial aid. Additional pound losses are likely if the Conservative lead narrows further over the next couple of weeks.

Judge denies, parental financial support Under Spanish law, parents are required to support their children until they reach financial independence, with no age limit, and a string of cases in recent years has cemented the rule. But parents are fighting back, and a court this month reinforced an important caveat to the rule: It doesn’t apply to adult children who are “lazy”. A YOUNG woman with no income has been denied financial support from her parents by a court because she is ‘too lazy to earn a living’. The regional court in Cantabria rejected the 23-year-old’s appeal against the verdict by a judge in her home town of Castro Urdiales, stating that the plaintiff had been ‘wasting her life’. Parents in Spain are legally required to provide the basics, including food, for their children until they reach 18, and must continue
to do so beyond this age until the adult child is earning enough to feed him- or herself. But this includes a caveat: if the adult child’s financial dependence is caused by his or her own behaviour, parents are no longer obliged by law to feed them. The legal precedent for the rule began several years ago, when young Spaniards began suing their parents for financial support. An adult Spanish woman who sued her divorced dad for a €500 allowance in 2015 was one of several test cases which had the effect of deepening parental responsibilities in the nation, which has the second highest rate of youth unemployment in Europe. The man, who had been estranged from his daughter for a decade, refused to support her while she continued her university studies — but was forced to do so by court order, and his bank accounts frozen when he failed to comply.

Suzuki Swift 2017
With agile handling, eager yet economical engines, generous levels of equipment and sensible pricing, the Suzuki Swift is a great car. It’s practical and well made, but it doesn’t feel quite as plush or substantial as a SEAT Ibiza. Even so, it’s still one of our favourite hatchbacks. It might look chunkier than the old Swift, but the new car is actually more or less the same size – so it’s at home on tight city streets and in multi-storey car parks. But it’s just as happy on a country road, with precise steering loads of traction and
great handling, thanks in part to its very lightweight design. There are two engine options – a 90PS 1.2-litre DualJet petrol, as seen in the previous Swift, and a 111PS 1.0-litre BoosterJet petrol. The 1.2 is revvy and enjoyable, but the BoosterJet is even better, with the same free-revving character plus an added injection of punchy, mid-range torque and excellent fuel economy. Rear head and leg room is surprisingly decent, with room for a pair of adults if the front seat occupants aren’t too tall.
The 265-litre boot capacity isn’t huge, but it’s plenty for shopping and the rear seat backs fold down for some extra space – although not completely flat. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, Bluetooth and DAB radio, but we’d go for a midspec SZ-T to gain alloy wheels, better infotainment, a reversing camera and the excellent BoosterJet engine. But even top-spec SZ5 models are well priced and come with the option of an automatic transmission and even all-wheel drive.
The Suzuki Swift is easily one of the best small hatchbacks around. Forgive some slightly cheap looking interior plastics and a slightly small boot and there’s really nothing else to pick fault with – the driving experience, running costs, price, and equipment levels make it a superb buy.
In Automotive History This week in 1906 brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright received their patent for the flying machine. They originally filed for the patent in 1903 prior to their first powered flight on December 17, 1903, a few miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The brothers had been experimenting with manned flying machines since 1900 when they began to test their gliders. They had been working on unmanned flyers since the year prior and developed a basic
design upon which they continued to improve upon once a pilot was put on board. Their first U.S. patent, 821,393, did not claim invention of a flying machine, but rather, the invention of a system of aerodynamic control that manipulated a flying machine’s surfaces. While not directly related to the automobile the invention of the flying machine forever changed transportation forever and eventually heavily influenced cars in relation to aerodynamics and style.

Expunging the past

VALENCIA City is set to change over 50 of its street names to remove any connections with the Franco era of Spain. Done in compliance with the Law of Historic Memory, most of the streets affected were named after characters close to the Franco regime in a period of Spanish history that most feel should not be commemorated in any way.
The work in identifying the places needing changing was carried out by the City’s university over the last five months. When the names are changed, streets will have both the old and new title side by side for a year to help the changes bed in. Many of the new streets are expected to be named after local women with only 5% of
Valencia’s street names currently being female. Although not covered by the Historic Memory law, other areas are also being renamed such as Plaza de America which celebrates the Spanish brutal conquest of South America and Calle Belchite, so named to commemorate the fascist bombardment of the village of Belchite in the civil war.

TWO speed cameras located in Alicante province are amongst the most lucrative in Spain based on fines issued in 2016. One on the A-31 as it passes through Villena grossed just under €600,000 in twelve months. Well behind but still a nice little earner is a camera on kilometre 521 of the A-7 motorway
near Elche which took around €380,000. This gives the two cameras a combined income of just under a million Euros last year, or €2,700 a day, give or take. The radar that took the most income from fines in Spain last year was one near Cordoba which raised an astonishing €4 million.

THE Spanish entrant for this month’s Eurovision Song Contest finished in last place after failing to get a single vote from the professional judges. Thing’s did not bode well for Manel Navarro’s English language “Do it for your lover” after it was booed by the audience when it was originally selected as the Spanish entry for the contest. The judges at the main event were in agreement with this verdict, and Navarro only avoided the dreaded “nul points” after the viewer’s round of voting gave him five points. Despite its somewhat naff image in the UK, Eurovision is hugely popular on the continent and is the most watched music contest
in the world with an estimated 200 million viewers tuning in. This year’s contest was won by Portugal’s Salvador Sobral, the first ever win for our Iberian neighbours, while the UK came in fifteenth. And for anyone wondering, yes the UK can still enter after they have left the EU.
PUERTO Rican pop star Luis Fonsi has hit the number one slot in the US Billboard charts, the first Spanish language song to achieve the feat in over twenty years. Fonsi’s worldwide smash “Despacito” was confirmed in the top spot in the middle of May, helped on its way by guest vocals from teen idol Justin Bieber.
The group Los del Rio had the last Spanish language number one in 1996 with novelty record “The Macarena” which proved to be something of a one hit wonder. Fonsi’s brand of Latino pop will almost certainly guarantee him a longer career and he is appearing in Benidorm on 15 July as part of his current world tour.

La Vila have promotion in their sights
The sign of a great team, be it soccer or rugby, is to win even when you’re having a bad day at the office. La Vila, playing away to Burgos in the fist leg of the promotion final, turned in what was for them a lack lustre performance yet they were still able to win 1620. This gives them a 4 point advantage for their home tie on May 28th. at their VilaJoyosa Stadium kick off 12.00. In a match where they were second best in three key elements of the game lineouts, scrums and turnovers, their defence and passing was outstanding. The first half was fast and furious with the home side first to score with a converted penalty 3-0.
Matas Jara countered with a converted a penalty 3-3. Burgos then scored a try 8-3. A converted La Vila try made it 8-10 however another unconverted Burgos try sent the home side in 13-10 at half time which was a fair indication of the game. The second half scoring began with a converted La Vila try, 13-20, and it looked as if La Vila were on a roll. The Burgos lads had other ideas and put tremendous pressure on La Vila which resulted in a converted penalty 16-20. The magnificent La Vila defence thwarted the continual Burgos pressure until the final whistle of a second half that had 5 minutes of added
time. The Burgos squad will play the final leg knowing that they gave a very creditable performance against a side that has now won 27 from 27 this season. La Vila at home will be a different proposition and whatever the outcome the loser will still have a chance of promotion into Honour Division A by playing the second from bottom team in that division, Cajasol Ciencas. Lions tour set to return in 2019 Former Warrington player Michael Monaghan says he has mixed feelings over his appointment as co-caretaker coach of Catalans Dragons. Monaghan and fellow assistant Jerome Guisset have been placed in temporary charge of the Super League team following the French club’s decision to part company with head coach Laurent Frayssinous on Monday. Monaghan, 37, who joined the Catalans backroom staff after retiring as a player at the end of the 2014 season, and ex-Wigan and Warrington forward Guisset will be in charge for the first time when the Dragons go to Salford on Friday before hosting Hull in Perpignan

Real Madrid snatch 33rd La Liga title Thousands of Real Madrid fans, many decked in the famous white team jersey, converged in the centre of the Spanish capital to celebrate the club’s 33rd league title after a 2-0 win over Malaga on Sunday, May 21, AFP reports. Antoine Griezmann says he is ready to leave Atletico Madrid in order to pursue a dream of winning trophies consistently. QUITS PALACE AND FOOTBALL C r y s t a l Palace’s former England manager Sam Allardyce has quit the English Premier League club five months after being appointed, saying that he was now leaving football management for good. Allardyce, 62, kept south London side Palace in the top flight after replacing the sacked Alan Pardew in December, when the club was in 17th place just one point above the relegation zone. He had signed a 2.5-year contract.
“It’s been a privilege to have worked here for the past five months. But there comes a time when you have to take stock of what direction you want your life to take and that’s been the simple part for me,” Allardyce said. “This is the right time for me. I have no ambitions to take another job, I simply want to be able to enjoy all the things you cannot really enjoy with the 24/7 demands of managing any football club, let alone one in the Premier League.”
