Sangria
Sangria is a wine punch typical of Argentina, Spain and Portugal. It normally consists of wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener, and a small amount of added brandy. In the case of fruits, they are chopped or sliced such as orange, lemon, lime, apple, peach, melon, berries, pineapple, grape and mango. A sweetener such as honey, sugar, simple syrup, orange juice is added. Instead of brandy, other spirits may be added. Because of the variation in recipes, sangria’s alcoholic content can vary greatly. The ingredients in sangria vary, particularly in the type of fruit used, the kind of spirits added (if any), and the presence or lack of carbonation. White wine can be used instead of red, in which case the result is called sangria blanca or, as in Argentina, clerico. Some recipes that use heavier reds can be lightened by mixing a bottle of white in the mix. In some parts of Northern Spain, sangria is called zurra and is made with peaches or nectarines • 26 fl. oz dry red wine [1]. In most recipes, wine is the dominant ingredient and acts as a • 16 fl. oz sparkling apple juice base. La Alhambra de Granada La Alhambra, denominada así por sus muros de color rojizo («qa’lat al-Hamra’», Castillo Rojo), está situada en lo alto de la colina de al-Sabika, en la margen izquierda del río Darro, al este de la ciudad, frente a los barrios del Albaicín y de la Alcazaba.

Su posición estratégica, desde la que se domina toda la ciudad y la vega granadina, hace pensar que existían construcciones anteriores a la llegada de los musulmanes. Su conjunto, completamente amurallado, posee una forma irregular limitado al norte por el valle del Darro, al sur por el de la al-Sabika, y al este por la Cuesta del Rey Chico, que a su vez la separan del Albaicín y del Generalife, situado en el cerro del Sol. Se tiene constancia por primera vez de ella en el siglo IX, cuando en 889
Sawwar ben Hamdun tuvo que refugiarse en la Alcazaba y repararla debido a las luchas civiles que azotaban por entonces al Califato cordobés, al que pertenecía Granada. Posteriormente, este recinto empezó a ensancharse y a poblarse, aunque no hasta lo que sería con posterioridad, ya que los primeros monarcas ziríes fijaron su residencia en lo que posteriormente sería el Albaicín. A pesar de la incorporación del castillo de la Alhambra al recinto amurallado de la ciudad en el siglo XI, lo que la convirtió en una fortaleza militar desde la que se dominaba toda la ciudad, no sería hasta el siglo XIII con la llegada del primer monarca nazarí, Mohamed ben Al-Hamar (Mohamed I, 1238-1273) cuando se fijaría la residencia real en La Alhambra. Este hecho marcó el inicio de su época de mayor esplendor. A Yúsuf I (1333-1353) y Mohamed V (1353-1391) les debemos la inmensa mayoría de las construcciones de la Alhambra que han llegado a nuestra época. Desde la reforma de la Alcazaba y los palacios, pasando por la ampliación del recinto amurallado, la Puerta de la Justicia, la ampliación y decoración de las torres, construcción de los Baños y el Cuarto de Comares, la Sala de la Barca, hasta el Patio de los Leones y sus dependencias anexas. De los reyes nazaríes posteriores no se conserva prácticamente nada. De la época de los Reyes Católicos hasta nuestros días podemos destacar la demolición de parte del conjunto arquitectónico por parte de Carlos V para construir el palacio que lleva su nombre, la construcción de las habitaciones del emperador y el Peinador de la Reina y el abandono de la conservación de la Alhambra a partir del siglo XVIII. Durante la dominación francesa fue volada parte de la fortaleza y hasta el siglo XIX no comenzó su reparación, restauración y conservación que se mantiene hasta la actualidad.
Granada’s Alhambra The Alhambra’s Moorish palaces were built for the last Muslim Emirs in Spain and its court, of the Nasrid dynasty. After the Reconquista (reconquest) by the Reyes Católicos (“Catholic Monarchs”) in 1492, some portions were used by the Christian rulers. The Palace of Charles V, built by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in 1527, was inserted in the Alhambra within the Nasrid fortifications. After being allowed to fall into disrepair for centuries, the Alhambra was “discovered” in the 19th century by European scholars and travelers, with restorations commencing. It is now one of Spain’s major tourist attractions, exhibiting the country’s most significant and well known Islamic architecture, together with 16th-century and later Christian building and garden interventions. The palace complex was designed with the mountainous site in mind and many forms of technology were considered. The park (Alameda de la Alhambra), which is overgrown with wildflowers and grass in the spring, was planted by the Moors with roses, oranges and myrtles; its most characteristic feature, however, is the dense wood of English elms brought by the Duke of Wellington in 1812. The park has a multitude of nightingales and is usually filled with the sound of running water
Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It was constructed during the mid 14th century by the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada in al-Andalus, occupying the top of the hill of the Assabica on the southeastern border of the city of Granada. from several fountains and cascades. These are supplied through a conduit 8 km (5.0 mi) long, which is connected with the Darro at the monastery of Jesus del Valle, above Granada. Despite long neglect, willful vandalism and some ill-judged restoration, the Alhambra endures as an atypical example of Muslim art in its final European stages, relatively uninfluenced by the direct Byzantine influences found in the Mezquita of Córdoba. The majority of the palace buildings are quadrangular in plan, with all the rooms opening on to a central court; and the whole reached its present size simply by the gradual addition of new quadrangles, designed on the same principle, though varying in dimensions, and connected with each other by smaller rooms and passages. The Alhambra was extended by the different Muslim rulers who lived in the complex. However, each new section that was added followed the consistent theme of “paradise on earth”. Column arcades, fountains with running water, and reflecting pools were used to add to the aesthetic and functional complexity. In every case, the exterior was left plain and austere. Sun and wind were freely admitted. Blue, red, and a golden yellow, all somewhat faded through lapse of time and exposure, are the colors chiefly employed.

Facts about the Sun Your skin is the largest organ in your body and also the most versatile. Just think! Your skin is responsible for holding everything else together. EPIDERMIS From head to toe it protects all the muscles, bones and all other organs. What does it protect them from? Sun, injury, variance of air temperature, and infection come to mind immediately. In addition it has the job of storing body fat, producing vitamin D and regulating body temperature. Skin is made up of three layers known as the epidermis, dermis and subcutis. The epidermis is the outer layer and is made up of squamous cells, which sit on basal cells which are layered over melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin which causes them to darken as the first defense against sun damage. The dermis is comprised of blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, hair follicles and glands which work together to protect the epidermis from air

temperature changes and drying out. The subcutis layer is defense for the other organs. The primary source of energy for all life, this energy created by the sun is harnessed in a variety of forms. Photosynthesis is probably the most familiar to people. It is the method whereby plants capture the energy of the sun and convert it for the benefit of all life forms. Man harnesses this energy by consumption of plants or consumption of plant eating animals for the fueling of the systems that comprise his body. It is not recommended that the sun be the only source for your daily requirements since skin cancer is a real concern with overexposure. Accepted daily recommendations are 200 IU (international units) for everyone up to age 50. After age 50 the requirements increase to 1000 IU with 2000 IU being the maximum in a day for anyone. It is important that seniors be made aware of the increased need since the tendency is to spend less time in the sun as you age. Taking too much Vitamin D can be as dangerous as not enough. Other sources for Vitamin D without taking supplements are salmon, mackerel, sardine, eggs, fortified milk and cod liver oil. If you become concerned about your Vitamin D level have your doctor perform a blood test. How often do you think of weather as a benefit of the sun? The energy provided by the sun causes the atmospheric circulation because of the uneven heating of the earth. This circulation then causes the wind and precipitation, both necessary in the life cycle of plant and animal life. Wind is considered one of those forms of energy production that researchers have focused on. For years they have also been working on harnessing solar energy for our use. Man has built houses facing south to collect the heat passively and created photovoltaic or solar cells to change sunlight into electricity. How to Make Perfect Paella
Perfect paella. Have you ever really experienced it? Probably not, unless you’ve been to Spain.
Truly spectacular paella, must have a thin layer of rice (no thicker than a half-inch), it must feature a few other ingredients on top (but not so many as to smother the rice), and it must have been cooked and served directly in a real Spanish paella pan. Lastly, if the bottom layer of rice yields a golden caramelized crust, called socarrat, you know you’ve reached the pinnacle of paella greatness! 1. The Rice: The rice should be medium grain. Spanish rice is rounded and short; it absorbs liquid very well, and it stays relatively firm during cooking. Those qualities make it ideal for paella, where the rice grains absorb flavor from the liquid. the rice should be dry and separate when done, not creamy like risotto. The most appreciated variety of Spanish rice is bomba, but you’ll have fine success with the widely available medium-grain rice sold by Goya. Arborio is an acceptable substitute; long-grain rices, however, are not. 2. The Pan: A true paella pan is wide, round, and shallow and has splayed sides. It does not have a lid. It has two looped handles and may dip slightly in the middle so the oil can pool there for the preliminary sauteing. The shape of the pan, which is called either a paella or paellera, helps ensure that the rice cooks in a thin layer. The Valencians say that the cooked rice should be only as thick as “un ditet,” or the width of one finger (about 1/2inch). The key is to maximize the amount of rice touching the bottom of the pan because that’s where the flavor lives. For that reason, paella pans grow in diameter rather than in height. 3. The Heat Source: Try to find a heat source that can accommodate the whole paella pan. Depending on the configuration of your burners, you’ll need to straddle the pan over two burners or set it on your largest burner. Either way, you’ll have to move and rotate the pan to distribute the heat. Or you can cook the paella outdoors on a large gas or charcoal grill, or even over a wood fire, which is how it’s done at paella competitions in Spain. 4. The Sofrito: A sauteof aromatics, called the sofrito, provides the flavor base. The components of the sofrito vary by region. Tomato, onion, and garlic are a popular trio for the sofrito. Some cooks use paprika, herbs, or a dried sweet red pepper. The technique is simple; saute the vegetables over medium heat until they soften and the flavors meld, and the water from the tomato has evaporated. This mixture should be thick enough to hold its shape in a spoon. 5. The Cooking Liquid: A flavorful liquid cooks the rice, while imbuing it with additional character. If you don’t have a homemade stock on hand, improvise one with the ingredients in the paella. For paella with shrimp, for example, simmer the shells in salted water for a quick, flavorful stock. If you use canned stock, choose a low-salt one. You can also use water, as many home cooks do in Spain. Almost every paella recipe calls for the liquid to be infused with saffron, which contributes color as well as a subtle background flavor to the rice. It isn’t difficult to make a fantastic paella (though getting the toasty socarrat to appear on that bottom layer does take a little practice), One of the most common mistakes is to overload the pan with too many ingredients, thereby suffocating the rice. When the rice in a paella is cooked well, nothing else matters-not the chicken, not the clams, not even the artichokes. These other ingredients do have a role to play in the pan, and that is to provide flavor to the rice. For great paella, add them with restraint, and let the rice take center stage.

A big reason to visit Calpe is undoubtedly the beautiful beaches with beautiful sands and crystal clear water. The resort of Calpe is dominated by the huge Peñon de Ifach, an enormous Gibraltar like rock which separates the two main beach areas of Playa la Fossa and Playa Cantal Roig. The Peñon de Ifach is a Natural Park. It is 332m high and extends for a kilometre out to sea. You can climb to the top from the information office at its base but to do so in Summer heat is quite an achievement! If you approach from the coast road from the north you’ll be confronted with a selection of large supermarkets and even larger apartment blocks and hotels running adjacent to the coast. These cater for holidaymakers who come to spend their days on the 900m long beach of Playa la Fossa (also called Playa Levante). Playa de la Fossa is a first class beach with golden sand and excellent facilities including several children’s play areas, tennis courts and even a bowling green. It has been awarded a Blue Flag. The majority of the restaurants along Playa la Fossa are geared towards Spanish tourists with local fish and rice dishes very popular. the occasional British establishment appears with its typical fare which strikes a nice balance as far as the resort is concerned. There is a pedestrianised promenade (Paseo
Infanta Cristina) the full length of the beach with a number of cocktail bars which help generate a lively nightlife scene. On the other side of the Peñon is a smart marina followed by narrow, rocky beach called Playa Cantal Roig. A promenade (Paseo Infanta Elena) runs from here past a Roman fish farm and Roman baths as far as another superb beach at Playa Arenal-Bol. The end of this 2000m long beach is pretty much in the old town. Just follow c/Valencia for two minutes and you’re in the Plaza Mayor. Both of these beaches have also been awarded Blue Flags. The old town of Calpe is worth a wander around to see some historical buildings and squares. There’s a street market every Saturday in the town and a flea market every Wednesday. In the summer months there are crafts fairs in the old town. Another worthwhile visit is to the daily fish auction at La Lonja in the port. These take place every weekday afternoon at 5pm. The salt flats just inland from Playa Levante date back to Roman times and are an important location for many species of migrating birds so don’t forget your binoculars.

Second Home and Garden Open Day A successful second open day On 30, March 31 and April 1, the second Home and garden open day took place. After the success of the first open day, Grupo Navarro hosted the second event on 30th & 31st March & 1st April after expanding the number of days and exhibitors with more activities and workshops. Group Home and Garden is composed of companies from various sectors, whose aim is to provide services to both the home and garden; swimming pools, electricity, landscaping, awnings etc. More than 20 companies, which had a showcase of their products, news and promotions took part. A large number of activities: courses, workshops, children’s parade, bouncy castles, cooking demonstrations by
