Last week the Christmas lights were switched on in the town square and it magically transformed, welcome to Plaza De Navidad, (The Christmas square) During the festive season the square will be packed with people and more importantly family’s, everyone will be enjoying themselves and taking in the atmosphere which is really magical, there are lights everywhere, festive greetings, lots of little stalls selling food and souvenirs and on the edge of the square you will see the

traditional nativity display of Jesus in his crib. Christmas is for all the family but really it’s all about the children and in the square you get the same feeling, with rides for the kids that look fantastic in the dark with all the flashing lights and also a bungee trampoline where kids can bounce a little bit higher in the safety of a harness. Best of all you will find the wonderful ice rink for all to enjoy. Plaza De Navidad will be open right up until the Three Kings festival on the 6th of January.

Three Kings

T

he 5th of January celebrates the end of Christmas and the arrival of the 3 kings, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar. Every year they parade with their fellowship along the streets of most Spanish cities and Benidorm will not be the exception, for those who have not seen it before, it is a very special event with a magical atmosphere, there are fantastic costumes, music and best of all the Three Kings ride along on floats throwing hundreds of sweets out to children, this celebration is very typically Spanish. You will love it. The procession starts around 6pm from the Doves Park Benidorm (Parque de Elche) and finishes by plaza de navidad (The Christmas Square) next to the Town Hall; this will be the last evening visitors will be able to enjoy all the Christmas magic. After the parade and festivities, the children rush home and they place their shoes on the windowsills and fill them with straw, carrots and barley for the donkeys some also put milk and biscuits next to the Christmas tree for the three kings and some water for their camels, the children go to bed excited to wake the next morning for gifts brought by the kings.

The 6th of January is a national holiday, children wake up and open their presents. If they have been good they will find lots of nice presents, but if they have been naughty they will find coal. These days, the coal is actually made from sugar but some years ago they used Real coal!

A popular tradition is to eat a Roscรณn, a sweet, donutshaped bread (though much bigger than a donut) covered in glacier cherries and sugar. A plastic toy is buried inside the mixture, so don't dive in too quickly. He or she who finds the toy gets good luck for the next year.

Christmas TV: Top Ten Picks

Downton Abbey Christmas Special 25th December, ITV It seems odd that Downton has decided to celebrate Christmas by setting their episode six months after the end of series four, meaning it is in the summer. Downton is set to be livelier than last year when Matthew was killed off and Christmas was ruined for multiple fans. That’s the hope, anyway. Strictly Come Dancing 25th December, BBC One A Christmas special and the final? Just days apart? Christmas really is treating the fans of the hit dancing show. Strictly will hope to dominate the ratings on Christmas Day with their festive edition of the show

The Christmas TV line up has been announced and it is time to begin arguing about which show should take priority only to remember that there is always the beauty of catch-up TV to solve (almost) all your family dramas. So which shows are worth watching? Here are our top ten picks this Christmas. The Great British Bake Off 17th December, BBC Two For anyone wanting to give some baking a go this Christmas, even just to take some of the pressure off

the parents, these baking tips are perfect for making this year a stress-free Christmas. Doctor Who — bye-bye Matt Smith, Hello Peter Capaldi Christmas Day, 7.30pm, BBC One After the 50th Anniversary delivered spectacular TV, we’re being spoiled again with another Doctor Who episode for Christmas Day; Peter Capaldi is the next incarnation of the Doctor as Matt Smith exits in this Christmas special.

Call the Midwife 25th December, BBC One This year offers another festive special from Poplar as the nuns and nurses return to celebrate Christmas in the year 1958. The last series may seem like an age ago, but bring on Series 3, which is to be aired early next year. Gangsta Granny 26th December, BBC One Last year it was Mr Stink, now David Walliams’ new Boxing Day TV adaptation is based on his book Gangsta Granny. this family comedy is based on an 11-year-old boy’s (rather dull) relationship with his grandma, this is set to be another Christmas hit.

Sherlock New Year’s Day, 9pm, BBC One the return of Sherlock to our screens comes with a far greater weight of expectation than earlier seasons ever had to bear. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return. David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive. New Year’s Day, Sky1 The inimitable David Attenborough is magical any time of the year, but this brand new show bringing to life the dinosaur specimens of the Natural History

Museum looks set to be a real treat. The Toy Story triple whammy December 23rd, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, BBC One Is there anything more Christmassy than living toys? The BBC has pulled off a real coup here, bagging all three Toy Story movies, including the premier showing of Toy Story 3 on Christmas Day, and playing them in sequence across three consecutive days. The Whale December 22nd, 9pm, BBC One — a new look at the Moby Dick tale

Telling the tale that inspired the classic novel Moby Dick, The Whale has an all-star cast and lavish period production values. The Muppets take on Lady Gaga Christmas Eve, 8pm, Channel 5 If you were on the hunt for a gang to out-barmy Gaga, The Muppets would be top of the list. Putting them in the same room together for an extended Christmas special? That’s a recipe for a beautiful, laugh-filled disaster.

El Gordo Spanish Christmas Lottery

The world's biggest lottery is in Spain and is called Lotería de Navidad or El Gordo which means “The Fat One” This huge lottery is drawn on 22nd December every year and the whole of Spain watches on TV. In 2013 El Gordo celebrates its 201st anniversary. The lottery drawing ceremony is at Teatro Real de Madrid in Madrid, Spain and is broadcast live on Spanish TV and on the Internet from 8am. Back in 2011 there was the "fattest" El Gordo in history so far the biggest winning number in 2011 paid out 4 million euros, and the total prize money last year spread across just over 15,000 winning numbers was 2500 million euros. This year the total prize amount will be over 2.2 billion euros that can be won by just over 15,000 winning numbers. El Gordo 2013 is broadcast live on Spanish TV channel "La 1" from 8am on 22nd Decemberand you can also see it online on the RTVE website from anywhere in the world. You can buy El Gordo tickets at lottery offices, on high streets and at some tobacconists. You can also buy tickets online if you are in or outside Spain, there are various websites that offer El Gordo tickets such as Buena Suerte and Bon Sort.

The Prize Draw From 09.00 in the morning of the 22nd December every year forty children aged 8 to 14 years old from the school "Colegio de San Ildefonso" in Segovia called "Los niños de San Ildefonso" - pick out small wooden numbered balls out of the two big golden drums that contain 100.000 numbers. This ceremony is called "el soniquete de los Niños de San Ildefonso." One drum has the winning numbers and the other has the prize amounts. The children pick and sing out a lottery number from one drum, and then pick and sing out prizes for that number from the other drum. The ceremony takes place at the "Teatro Real de Madrid" and takes just over three hours. It’s very sweet and Christmas in Spain just wouldn’t be the same without it. Naturally because of the money involved it’s very exciting viewing, at least until the 1st prize, 2nd and 3rd prize is drawn. The Tickets The numbering system itself is quite complex. You don't pick your own numbers. For El Gordo you buy a pre-printed ticket. Each ticket number has a picture of a nativity scene which changes every year. An El Gordo ticket (billete) has a pre-printed 5-digit number and is like an A4 sheet with 10 smaller

tickets on it, a full ticket sheet (billete) costs 200 euros and in 2013 there will be 180 series of the same ticket (billete). Each ticket sheet is divided into ten smaller tickets called “décimos” which cost 20 euros each. Most people buy a “décimo,” which like a full lottery ticket, but as explained above, a “décimo” is technically a tenth of a ticket.

The Newly Refurbished Rock And Roll House

Now Open For Christmas and New Year

New Year’s Eve Special Show Free Party Bags & Grapes A Fantastic Line up

The owners of the rock and roll house proudly present the very newly refurbished and best live entertainment venue in Benidorm. I went along to talk to them and see what has been going on for the last month whilst they were shut for a refurbishment. I had driven past several times and seen the huge amount of building materials in the front terrace and thought to myself wow, the guys there had told me it was just a small job and a few things to improve but it looked to me much more. Well now I can see exactly what was being done and had a chat with Alvero. Due to be open sometime this coming weekend I was shown what still seemed to be construction work in progress and I suppose that’s normal, what seems to be a long way to go when having building work done is often turned around all at the end and the project takes shape out of nowhere. What I did see was most impressive and I could not help myself to say to Alvero “this is Benidorm not Las Vegas” wow, how cool was the decor in the loo’s even the toilet seats were themed, I really hadn’t seen anywhere around with such amazing toilets and if there was to be a competition for the best loo’s in town I’m sure the newly reformed Rock and Roll house would be in first place. A new outside terrace together with a massive neon

display sign will help remind you where you are! You know big signs in glowing bright neon colours start to get you going before you even walk through the doors, well that’s what Rock and Roll house and Rock and Roll music is all about, it’s the biggest and most electric live music venue with the very best artists in town. Now after nine years the venue has been continually improved and together with the best ever memorabilia and decor to complement the very best music the venue has been probably one of the most successful in the whole town of Benidorm. I had also recently met up with one of the top stars of the show Dean Ryan who is (Mr Shakin Stevens) the only act of its kind here and also teamed up together with Simon Patrick for the Elvis and Shaky Show the number

one and most popular live music act in Benidorm. Dean has been in Benidorm since 1999 working around the venues before settling down at the Rock and Roll house for the last three years. Dean grew up listening to Shakin Stevens and loves Rock and Roll, he started performing with his dad when he was 17 and then went on to Pontins holiday centre in Great Yarmouth in 1987 he also performed in Ibiza working the hotels, so for the last 30 years Dean has been performing. Dean told me “I love performing at the Rock and Roll house it really is my favourite place it’s my home , the audience love us and come specially to enjoy the line-up, 5 hours of live music”. Dean went on to say “Benidorm is one of the only places in Europe offering such good entertainment, its free and there is so much great variety for the visitors, I love the town and the lifestyle.” “My mum is here with me most of the time that makes it all worthwhile. I lived in California and did not perform for four years. It really wasn’t me, I live to perform it’s in my blood and being here is like living a millionaire’s life style without the millions”.

Denia Calpe Altea

Use your own car, take the boat from Dénia to Calpe, take the train (the Trenet de La Marina) or take the bus. From Dénia to Calpe If you go by car, take the motorway AP-7 (exit no.63, Benissa-Calpe), or use the main road N-332, via Gata-Teulada-Benissa-Calpe. CALPE is situated 30 kms from Denia. Look out for the imposing Peñón de Ifach (the Ifach Rock) which you can see from the road as you approach; Spain declared this a Natural Park in 1987. The archaeological remains of “Los Baños de la Reina” (The Queen´s Baths”), dating from IV-V centuries AD, are located between Calpe town and the Peñón; these remains of a Roman villa formed part of a fish factory which, as you will see, is still in a good state of preservation. Peñón de Ifach Natural Park. Climb up to the summit of the Peñón to enjoy the beautiful views. You will be amazed at how big the Peñón de Ifach actually is; its imposing shape reaches a height of 332m, as it rests in the Mediterranean waters far below. At the summit we are surrounded by incredible views, the immensity of the sea, the reflection in the water of Calpe itself, and all the nooks and crannies of the rocky coastline. The Ifach is also a favourite destination for rock climbers and deep sea divers. Visit Calpe. In the old town you will find the “Torreó de la Peça”, which houses the architectural remains of a military fortress dating from the end of the 14th century. These remains were reinforced in the 18th century by order of Felipe III and further restored in 1981. Nearby are the “murallas” (XIV and XV centuries), and the”Forat de la Mar”, which is a gateway into the town opened by the French troops in 1813. “La Iglesia Antigua” (“The Ancient Church”, is the only example of Mudéjar Gothic architecture in the Valencian Community, and “la Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de las Nieves” (“The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Snows”) is of great interest for its stained glass windows and its façade decorated with mosaics. Next you can make your way to the “arrabal” and visit the Archaeological, Fiesta and Collectors’ Museum and the “Casa de la Senyoreta” (a typical urban mansion dating from the 18th century).

12

Lonja (the Guildhall). In the early evening, about 5.00 pm, from Monday to Friday, just like in Dénia, the fishing boats land here and set up the fish auction in the Port Lonja. You can watch the auction taking place from the visitors’ viewing point inside the Lonja Tourist Information Point In other parts of the town you can visit the San Salvador and the San Juan chapels (18th century), and the 19th century Pou Salat. Coastal walk. Parallel to the coast are the promenades and walkways known as the Infanta Elena promenade, -along the Arenal-Bol beachand the Infanta Cristina promenade –along the Levante or La Fossa beach. The Prince of Asturias Promenade is situated at the foot of the Peñón de Ifach, bordering the southern slope. The glass-bottomed boat based in Calpe harbour is worth checking out. A trip in this boat will allow you to observe the sea bed as closely as if you yourself were a fish living down there! It´s also possible to take boat trips to Jávea, Dénia, Altea or Benidorm, sailing down the whole coastline.

ALTEA, our next stop, is located 10 kms from Calpe (N-332).

Altea, a bohemian village atmosphere living and breathing art and culture round every corner!

Visit Altea In the centre of Altea you will come to a crossroads with traffic lights and a small square with a church, which was a former Franciscan convent. The commercial town centre is situated all around this square. From here, you begin the ascent up to the old town, following Calle Pont de Moncau, until you reach a road junction where you take a right turn. On the corner is the Casa de la Cultura, the”Navarro Ramón” Art Museum and the “Casal Fester” Museum with its exhibitions about the local town fiestas. Further along the same street, you come to the barrio de Vella Guarda, a part of the town where you can see the reconstrucción of an old watchtower. Having arrived at the Plaza de la Cruz, proceed to the Cuesta de los Machos and from there to Portal

Vell, the old town gate; it´s now clear that we are in the old walled part of the town: el casco antiguo. On Costera dels Matxos you will see the Fundación Scholter (Scholter Foundation) exhibiting paintings. You should also pay a visit to “El Palau” a beautiful modern concert hall, also containing the Museum of World Musical Instruments, displaying an interesting exhibition of musical instruments made of cane and wood. Go up the Calle Mayor (Main Street) and admire the cobbled and stepped streets, and the balconies with their wrought iron balustrades. Before you know it, you´ve arrived at the outstanding Plaza de la Iglesia de la Virgen del Consuelo (Church of the Virgin of Consolation). A typical Mediterranean atmosphere fills this charming part of the town, with the church of the Virgin of Consolation crowned with unusual blue and white tiled domes. The magnificent buildings clustered together in the old town give it a unique charm. The peace and quiet and tranquility of the old town have made Altea into a haven for artists and artesans, whose shops and stalls fill the old quarter with a bohemian atmosphere. The Craft Fair is held from 7.30 pm until midnight during the summer season and at Easter, with stalls selling glass objects, puppets, hand made gold jewellery, silver, leatherware, etc.. In the evening, this is one of the best areas in the town to have a good dinner in one of the many restaurants. Continue your walk, going down the Calle Costera del Mestre de la Música towards the Paseo del Mediterráneo promenade, where you will find lovely gardens and a wide selection of cafés, restaurants, and shops – in fact everything to help you enjoy a gentle stroll.

From this Mirador beside the Church Square you can enjoy magnificent views. The Mirador.

Weekly market. This is held on Tuesdays beside the river, in cami del Algar, just beside the Sports Centre. Get back to Dénia feeling satisfied and relaxed after a morning spent out in the fresh sea air, having enjoyed the beautiful countryside, the rich cultural history of the monuments and buildings you have visited, and the delightfully old fashioned ambience of Altea.

Lee and his guests will be celebrating twice on New Year’s Eve to give everyone a chance to experience the celebration in both Spanish and British fashion. The first celebration will of course be at midnight, there will be free grapes for all and some Spanish tapas with a local Spanish chupito to see in "Nuevo Anos Espanyo” (Spanish New Year) However the party does not stop there, the celebrations continue with a countdown to the British New Year with Big Ben live on his HD screens, followed by fireworks from around the world and of course the famous circle of crossed hands held and singing together as one for “Auld Lang Syne” Lee will also be providing a free traditional British tapas buffet for everyone to enjoy, including a free glass of Cava! The music theme for the night will be a time travel through the decades promising some classics and some unforgotten ones too as Lee tries his best to be as diverse as he can be- It really is something for everyone and don’t forget as usual “U R THE DJ” every night in The Pig and it´s YOUR MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG all your requests and dedications will be catered for. It’s all you need for a great read.

Christmas at Tapas Alley You can get a taste of Spain any time of year and the best place to do it is right in the heart of Old Town Benidorm. Visit Tapas Alley for a real taste of Spain this Christmas! Tapas (finger food) are served in many bars along this busy street. You can´t be in Spain without visiting this famous street and without tasting some of Spain’s most tasty food that includes: fresh squid, meatballs, Serrano Ham, Mussels and so much more. The range is never ending you would be there for hours trying to get a taste of everything, a perfect way to spend an evening with a few glasses of wine or a beer. Situated at the top of Tapas Alley opposite Queens Hotel in Plaza de la Constitucion, there is always a fantastic buzz of people enjoying the famous Spanish style food with amazing wine, beer or even more common this time of year is to see people treating themselves to some Cava! Walking along the covered part of Tapas Alley you will find many other bars and restaurants, this part of the Old Town is made of many little narrow walking streets and just a couple of streets along you can find Patrizzi offering a huge choice of Tapa on display, many people like to jump in and out of the little bars and restaurants to get a taste of everything, not just the food and wine but the buzzing atmosphere that surrounds you.

Jamón

Many people visiting Spain wonder about the large legs of meat, hanging in supermarkets and stores all year round let alone the vast amount and range of choice that comes out at Christmas time. The meat you see are pork, legs from pigs dried and aged, these cured meats are very popular all year round and very delicious. Jamón serrano literally (hill ham) it is a type of dry cured Spanish ham which is generally served raw in thin slices, or occasionally diced. The majority of Serrano hams are made from the Landrace breed of white pig and are not to be confused with the much more expensive and entirely different Jamón ibérico. Fresh hams are trimmed and cleaned, then stacked and covered with salt for about 2 weeks in order to draw off excess moisture and preserve the meat from spoiling. The salt is then washed off and the hams are hung to dry for about 6 months. Finally, the hams are hung in a cool, dry place for six to eighteen months, depending on the climate, as well as the size and type of ham being cured. The drying sheds (Secaderos) are usually built at higher elevations, which is why the ham is called mountain ham. There are many producers of Spanish hams but the level quality can be judged by the following • The type of pig used. • The way the pig has been fed. • The part of the pig used to make the ham. • The way the ham is cured.

Types of Cured Ham

The four major quality categories of cured ham are as follows, from highest to lowest quality. Jamón ibérico de Bellota Free range, acorn fed Iberian pigs. Jamón ibérico de Recebo Acorn, pasture and compound fed Iberian pigs. Jamón ibérico de Campo Sometimes just known as Jamón ibérico for short and also known as Jamón de Pata Negra, Black Iberian pig, range fed and fattened on acorns. Jamón Serrano Also known as Jamón Reserva, Jamón Curado and Jamón Extra made from compound fed White pigs.

“EXTRAORDINARY Pizzas”

Reviewed 19 October 2013 When i visit in El Albir or pass by there I stop for pizza because as the title says they are EXTRAORDINARY.

La Parrilla de Hector Avd Comunidad Valenciana 1 | Benidorm

“Improving”

“Tasty pizza, not expensive”

Reviewed 23 November 2013 This time I visited the site on the newly opened Gerona street. The service was second to none, but really slow in serving food ) at all times the staff were very nice. Tiny but clean and well decorated room. We ordered a Mediterranean, very little good salad but the egg rolls I personally have had better, too oily for my taste, though not bad. The meat was very good, served with potatoes and corn. For dessert- rice pudding that I did not like. The service has improved a lot, but need to polish the quality / price.

“Amazing pizzas and lovely salads”

“Excellent Food at Excellent Prices”

Reviewed 09 October 2013 Extensive choices of pizzas. Choice of thin or thick crust. Want a tasty pizza and not too expensive, then this is the right restaurant.

Reviewed 30 September 2013 Fresh ingredients , lovely atmosphere and good service. Happy with the bill too. Highly recommended especially for families with kids as they provided colouring in pictures and crayons to amuse the kids while they waited for their pizza. We had the chicken salad to start which was massive, cheesy garlic bread followed by a selection of their pizzas. All good from start to finish.

“2 words: PIZZA KEBAB!!”

Reviewed 11 August 2013 The first thing we do when we are in the neighbourhood, is get the kebab pizza (the thick one) at pizza4you. They’re absolutely fabulous. The problem is the thin crust pizza’s are delicious too. But no worries, if there are leftovers they give you a box to take it all home and by lunchtime the next day it’s all gone. The service is friendly and quick with a free bottle of wine when they realise something went wrong with our order. On busy days it might be quicker to pre-order and eat at home or on the way home :-)

Reviewed 14 October 2013 Hector’s Argentinian Grill has just moved to a new place on Calle Gerona and to be honest, it’s just amazing. It’s perfect for the more discerning customer in Benidorm who’s fed up of the standard egg and greasy chips. The menu of the day for 9.90 (all day every day) allows you to experience juicy, tender steak served with chips, salad and the famous churri churri sauce. Menu also includes free drink and a dessert/ coffee. Best restaurant in Benidorm by far and one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

“O.m.g. Wow.”

Reviewed 29 August 2013 We went looking for a restaurant we read about on trip advisor and im so glad we could not find it but we did find this gem of a place. All i can say is if you like steak you will love this place. Diego and the staff made us feel like royalty. I had my steak cooked to chefs(papa) recommendation and all i can say is WOW. You will not be disappointed. Please when in benidorm you must try this place. We had t bone, fillet, two sweets 2 bottles of house red 2 beers 4brandies and 2 free shots. Our bill was 56euro’s. I asked had they made a mistake as i had 100 ready to hand over. Value for money oh yes.

Bikini Beach Bar Avd de Madrid 32. Benidorm

“Wonderful Setting”

Reviewed 14 December 2013 Lovely setting for people watching, seeing the sun set over the sea with a lovely happy hour drink or two .

“Sit back, watch the world go by”

We have had coffee in this restaurant virtually every day, great coffee, served with a mini croissant, and great service, wonderful sitting on the front and just take it all in, great spot for people watching!

“Classy sea front restaurant”

Reviewed 9 November 2013 This restaurant/ bar is a classic old style beach bar with a wide menu of burgers, breakfasts, milk shakes etc together with a full selection of alcoholic drinks. I had the bikini burger and a banana milk shake on my last visit and it was absolutely yummy. The wonderful sea view makes for a pleasant experience. Thus far the rowdy beer boys who make the other sea front bars somewhat unattractive have not reached this bar and so you will have a good time here.My only issue is that the serving staff are somewhat surly, which is a pity in what is otherwise a very nice place “A great place to relax from the beach.” Reviewed 23 October 2013 A fantastic Vodka, chilled and served in a nice big glass, perfect for watching the world go past. A few rowdy fellas in there but hey this is Benidorm, they wernt being rude just having fun.

“Happy hour and sunsets”

Reviewed 8 October 2013 popped in for a drink one evening as we strolled along the promenade happy hour was still on so had a couple of beers and cocktails whilst watching the picture perfect sunset nice laid back feel to this bar great location over looking the beach.

Dressing For The Occasion: Black Tie

Tuxedo, dinner suit, black tie, cravat noir… Call it what you will, this formal code of dress is probably the smartest ensemble most modern men are expected to don during their sartorial career. With a lack of regular occasions to wear black tie nowadays, many younger gents may be unfamiliar with the art of effectively executing the look. In the United Kingdom, the tailored component of a black tie ensemble is known as a dinner suit. The name is self-explanatory; it was your uniform at the dinner table, and evolved as a more casual alternative to white tie (tailcoats and all). Black tie was exclusively an evening dress code, and remains so. Six o’clock or when darkness fell (whichever occurred first) was your cue to don your dinner suit. We’re all familiar with the look of a tuxedo (US vernacular) from black and white films, but how do you put this look together and what are the finer details of its component parts? With party season upon us, we examine how today’s gent can approach this distinct area of formal wear, and how this traditional form of dress has evolved to cement its place in the menswear wardrobe of today… The Jacket The first item to begin with is the jacket. This should be made from pure wool and is traditionally jet-black. Midnight blue also looks rather fetching and is ideal for gents who are more inclined to make a statement; this tone appears ‘blacker than black’ under artificial light, and was particularly favoured by the always dapper Duke of Windsor in the thirties. Burgundy has also made a return to the black tie sphere, with a number of designled brands utilising the rich shade in recent collections, including Swedish label Acne and British stalwart Reiss. Whilst this may be stepping into smoking jacket territory, this modern twist on black tie is most definitely worth considering. The white dinner jacket was created for tropical climes, and as such, should remain there – it looks distinctly out of place in the damp and dark surrounds of Europe.

Benidorm residents donated over 70 pairs of glasses to Specsavers charity campaign

Recycling For A Better Future

The Ecopark (Alberca Ecoparque) in La Nucia is nearing completion. Phase 2 of the work being carried out was completed last week after being plagued by stoppages and delays to the installation since 2011, the city council expect that operation will be up and running, recycling 30 different types of waste in 2014. The 4,000 square metre site, will start its third and final phase at the beginning of the next year which will include fencing off the land, landscaping and final equipment installations. The centre will provide appropriate containers for all materials people wish to discard as well as an administrative area, a lecture room and an exhibition hall dedicated to environmental education and the promotion of recycling. The town hall also hopes that the Ecopark will discourage the present habit of disposing of rubbish by throwing it into gullies or on waste land. Mayor of La Nuicia Bernabe Cano said “The town will be cleaner as well as sustainable, Recycling concerns us all and the Alberca eco-park supplies what was missing.

Issue 13 / 20 Dec 2013- 08 Jan 2014

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

You’re full of extra enthusiasm and even some great new ideas as the week kicks off-just be aware that one or two of the little things could escape you now. From sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday, home is where your heart is. Get your digs in order and settle in; you’ll deeply enjoy being mellow, whether it’s solo-style or with family or friends. Different, hotter energy comes your way late Thursday and extends through most of what just might be an extremely romantic weekend. Are you ready for some amazing adventure on your love path?

CANCER

Doing something a bit out of character can be extremely liberating at the beginning of the week, though you may want to do it outside of the context of work (or at least make sure your boss isn’t around!). Take a bold, positive step, and then watch the stars push you further and faster from sometime Tuesday through Thursday. Is romance on your mind? You’re very good at it right now! If you’re thinking about a major expenditure (financial or even emotional) around Friday or this weekend, be sure you’ve considered the long-term impact.

LIBRA

TAURUS

You’re just not as practical as usual as the week begins. Avoid making any major financial moves or career decisions now, and any planning should be of the short-term variety. Then, from sometime Tuesday through Thursday, the energy’s ideal for sharing your feelings; you’ll recognize the right moment instead of kicking yourself later. Go on, say it! Someone you interact with on Friday or this weekend may be every bit as bullheaded as you. It’s annoying, yet also intriguing. Imagine what you can accomplish if you join forces instead of butting heads!

LEO

Friends are in your personal stars as the week kicks off. Workplace camaraderie feels great, and a new off-the-clock connection can truly blossom beautifully. Looks like you’re in a mellow mood from sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday - could it be that you’re sorting something out? Perhaps something deep? Don’t forget to let your instincts weigh in; they’re excellent now. You’re feeling excellent yourself starting late Thursday and through most of the weekend. Everything that’s wonderful, generous, lovable and creative about you is highlighted. The world’s truly your oyster!

SCORPIO

Your mind’s sharp and your instincts are good as the week gets going, and it’s an excellent time to share what’s in your heart. Anything (or even anyone) new is favoured for you now. From sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday, however, it’s best to chill out and stick with what’s working. Finish up a current project instead of kicking off a fresh one, and save any major romantic stuff for later. Sometime around Friday, you’ll have a more accurate big-picture view of your personal scene - and through the weekend, the view looks better and better. Enjoy!

Handle all work-related stuff with extra care and your boss with kid gloves as the week begins. Resist the urge to do something risky. You’ll be glad you did. From sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday, though, your intuition’s spot-on. Oddly, getting what you want may just be a matter of letting your original plan go. Around Friday and even this weekend, stressing out is one way to react to the situation; it’s up to you to find a better one. To pre-empt freaking out, get proper exercise and rest, and talk about what’s up with you now.

Thinking clearly is key as the week gets under way. Figure out what makes you feel centred, grounded and high-functioning, then do it and take on the world. From sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday, you may be having that ‘grass is greener’ sensation. Take your desire for something different into serious consideration, but make any major changes slowly, in increments. Then take special care with work and projects on Friday and Saturday. Have a backup plan (and maybe a fire extinguisher!). Reach out on Sunday; your touch is wanted.

Get online, on the phone or in touch in any and every way as the week kicks off, especially if you have a romantic connection. You’re on it when it comes to communication now. From sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday, however, it’s internal talk that may occupy you. Find ways to tune into your inner voice among the busy day-to-day. That voice has something major to say! Then it’s your creative powers that figure prominently from late Thursday and through the weekend. Exercise that imagination … learn, love and live fully. On Sunday, though, don’t lose track of something important.

AQUARIUS

GEMINI

The stars are highlighting everything that’s amazing about you as the week begins. You’ve got a way with words that’s extremely winning, and everyone’s loving you. Make some moves in all areas of life! Around Wednesday and Thursday, however, it’s time to stop and reassess. Get yourself to sit down and make a list of career goals, romantic ideals or just plain old errands. From Friday through most of the weekend, you’ve got massive can-do energy, incredible intelligence and quite the sense of adventure. You’ll want to be all ready for action!

VIRGO

While your mind’s working splendidly as the week gets started, the brain-to-mouth connection could be a little problematic. Don’t turn off that internal editor, because how you say it is just as important as what you say. Somebody, or maybe a whole crew of somebodies, is ready to lend you a hand around Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. These people could be from work, in your family or even perfect strangers. From Friday through the weekend, your challenge is to maintain flexibility, both of body and mind. Do some yoga, then change your plans at the last minute. It’ll feel great.

SAGITTARIUS

Life looks busy at the beginning of the week, but don’t forget to consciously choose your path. You’re the captain of your destiny, and your actions speak at least as loud as your words. Relationships of all varieties figure prominently from sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday. Put the people factor first, and be ready to negotiate and compromise, rather than ignore an issue or walk away. Life looks fabulous starting later on Thursday and lasting through most of the weekend. Let your sense of fun (and some amazing luck!) Be your guide.

You’re much more likely to give an indirect answer than a simple yes or no as the week begins, and hey, it’s your choice. Maybe you just need a little more time to think, because from sometime Tuesday through most of Thursday, you’re ready for action. Romance can really heat up, and your greatness is appreciated in all areas of your life now. Take advantage of the energy to start something new. Another hint: Take particularly good care of your health from Friday through the weekend. It may be a bit delicate, so be smart and keep in balance.

Roys Amazon Plan

It’s all you need for a great read.

Boris Becker to coach Novak Djokovic

Good Week

Roy Hodgson has revealed that England will travel to Manaus a day earlier than normal ahead of their opening World Cup game with Italy. England were drawn in Group D and were handed a tie in the Amazon in the north of Brazil for their opening clash, something they had hoped to avoid. "We know it's a tough group, as most of the groups are, but we didn't want to be based up in the north," Hodgson told the FA's official website, "We've already decided that we'll go with the team [to Manaus] two days before, not the usual one day before. Hodgson revealed he will be travelling to the Amazon early next year with Team England managing director Adrian Bevington on a fact-finding mission, whilst they will also be in Miami, where their pre-World Cup base will be situated.

Novak Djokovic’s has chosen his new head coach, Boris Becker he will replace Marian Vajda. Vajda will remain part of the Serb’s coaching team along with Miljan Amanovic and Gebhard Phil-Gritsch. Becker now 46, a six-time Grand Slam champion, 64time tournament winner on the ATP Tour and former world number 1, will work with Djokovic from the first grand slam of the season, xt month’s Australian Open in Melbourne. He will also accompany him to the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as tournaments in Dubai, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris and the season-ending World Tour Finals in London. The German is best known for being the youngest Wimbledon champion at the tender age of 17 in 1985 and went on to become one of the most successful players in the history of the game. Becker told national media “I am proud Novak invited me to become his head coach,” “I will do my best to help him reach his goals, and I am sure we can achieve great things together.”

Sunderland Stun Chelsea

Chelsea dominated the majority of the 90 minutes, though their goal was fortuitous, with Lee Cattermole poking the ball into his own goal. The Blues seemed to be heading to the last four until a late Fabio Borini equaliser took the match to extra time. From then on the Premier League strugglers were the better side with Ki Sung-Yueng's thumping winner deserved.

bad week Aguero Out

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could be out of action for up to eight weeks says manager Manuel Pellegrini. The Argentine, City’s leading scorer this season with 19 goals, injured his calf during Saturday’s 6-3 victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal. It was originally thought he would be out for a month but “The doctor has said he has at least one month or eight weeks,” said Pellegrini.

Another One Bites The Dust

Tottenham have sacked yet another underachieving manager and handed their bemused fans a familiar dose of seasonal bewilderment and uncertainty. Yes, chairman Daniel Levy has pulled out his trusty axe once again and clipped the head off another hapless victim, fearing that the club’s hopes and dreams for the season are going pear-shaped. Europa League knock-out stages with a 100 per cent qualifying record? Capital One Cup quarter-final spot? Seventh in the table, still above champions Manchester United and still just five points outside the top four. Andre Villas-Boas became the 19th manager to leave

a club this season when he was sacked by Tottenham on Monday. His departure came after 5-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday - Spurs’ worst at White Hart Lane in 16 years. But, Villas-Boas left with a win percentage of 53.7% in the league, which is the highest of any Spurs manager since the Premier League began.. He was the fifth Premier League manager to depart this season, which is a big contrast to the end of December 2012 when only two managers had gone Mark Hughes at Queens Park Rangers and Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea - and there are undoubtedly others in the Premier League who will be glancing nervously over their shoulders. Who Next? Fabio Capello is an early favourite to be the next Tottenham manager after the club parted company with Andre Villas-Boas. Capello is currently in charge of Russia and planning a campaign for the World Cup in Brazil next summer, but may leap at the chance to return to club football. Glenn Hoddle has reportedly thrown his hat into the ring as well at a chance to return to White Hart Lane. Hoddle, who has not managed a club since he left Wolves in 2006, previously managed Spurs between 2001 and 2003 – and is well loved among the club’s fan Former Tottenham striker Jurgen Klinsmann, currently the USA manager, has also been rumoured to be linked with the vacancy.
