TOWN HALL SUPPORTS BRITISH FUN DAY

What’s Hot and What’s Not

2nd Birthday PARTY see page 23

see page 13

This year we had seen for the very first time temporary street bars outside some of the bars in Calle Gerona. The annual fancy dress party event used to be confined to the top end of Calle Gerona at the Yorkshire Pride and also in the English Square from Sinatras down to Cafe Benidorm and has now been extended all the way along Calle Gerona to Morgans Tavern where the road had been closed by the police. All side streets were also closed and no traffic could enter into Calle Gerona, this was the very first time that all the streets were closed. We now believe that the event is being recognised a major tourist attraction by the Town Hall and with thousands of visitors flocking to the area each year the event will continue to grow. Gema Amor Pérez head of Tourism at the Town Hall Benidorm kindly spoke to us. > Page 3

Q- Local business would like to know how to be involved in the event, and what would be considered to help make this an even bigger and better attraction. We have seen with other events, many more things like street stalls, with food and drink, merchandise, games, entertainment and activities. Do the local government consider that this type of thing would be beneficial and be allowed to be planned for the next year. Gema Amor: It could be beneficial for better promotion and advertising of the event, but it must be done while respecting the provisions of municipal ordinances in this regard. Q- Tourism is very important for the local community and the event already attracts thousands of visitors, what plans do you have to build on this and promote this event even more to the British Public? Gema Amor: It is interesting to promote this event. Sudden Cold Snap Hits Costa Blanca

What a difference a week can make, the fiestas were wonderful and the weather seemed to hold for the best part but now summer is over, autumn is here and winter is coming! One week ago we were still experiencing the last of the long summer with temperatures still above 20°C but a sudden cold front came in and we saw temperatures plummet! On Saturday 16th we woke to snow on top of the surrounding mountains, this held a dreadful chill in the air all day and followed in to Sunday. The mercury has barely made it above 15°C and at night we have seen temperatures recorded as low as 3°C. The weather and climate in Costa Blanca is usually excellent with an average annual temperature of 19.3°C and 325 sunny days each year making it a perfect destination for sun lovers. In winter the weather is very mild compared to northern Europe. The temperatures can vary greatly, one day it can be over 20°C and you can be walking around in shorts and t-shirt but on another day it can be 6°C and feel very cold. So remember Spanish winter may not be hot but the sun is shining and the sky is blue!

Transferring Money To Spain With A Foreign Exchange Company

Many UK expatriates living here in Spain have a regular need to transfer money from their UK bank across to their Spanish bank. To the uninitiated, they simply transfer money from bank to bank as they believe that this is less hassle. But is that necessarily the case? Why Pay for Convenience when it can be Simpler and Cheaper? The Benefits of using a Foreign Exchange Dealer when you are sending money to a foreign country such as Spain from the UK, : • All banks will charge you a transfer fee. Not only does this differ from bank to bank, but it also differs depending on the transfer duration period, often the faster - the more expensive. The transfer fees that FECs levy is usually less than that charged by UK banks. • Up until recently, most banks would take up to 3 working days to affect a foreign currency transfer. Many now offer a faster service, but at a premium. FECs can usually transfer money faster than banks. • Many financial institutions charge a commission for each transfer. FECs do not. • The foreign exchange rate is notoriously volatile, and with a bank you will have to pay whatever the prevailing rate is on the day of the transfer. With a good foreign exchange company you will be able to fix a more favourable exchange rate for all future transfers. • As we all know, banks do not have the most friendly opening hours, whereas most FECs are open for extended hours and have friendly staff on hand to help if you need them.

Benidorm’s 30th

Half Marathon & 10K Run

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

Benidorm will be hosting its 30th annual half marathon this weekend on Sunday 24th November. More than 150 people make up the security team for this well organised event and the race continues to improve each year. The route stretches from the far side of the Poniente beach to the end of Levante and almost up to Albir before looping back on itself. This is a 21.24km Run, it has a total ascent of 104.0m and has a maximum elevation of 54.0m – all the affected roads along the route will be closed to traffic. The event attracts runners and spectators from around the world, including runners from Italy, Cuba and obviously Spain. Last year’s race was won by a resident Spaniard in 1.07.44 and following closely behind was Brit Joe Bailey from Salford who managed a very respectable 1.11.2. It all kicks off at the Town Hall Square with the 10k runners at 09.35am shortly followed by the half marathon runners 25 minutes later at 10.00am. For the 30th Anniversary, several events are scheduled to begin on Saturday 23 with an exhibition of photos and memorabilia of the previous races , a trade corridor , a round table and other acts such as prior training and a combat fitness night session and buzzes the day before the test.

Sinatra´s Giant Paella Every year you will find a giant paella outside Sinatra´s, the owner Manolo hosts this fantastic feast year after year. Manolo is the man who started the Fancy Dress extravaganza over 20 years ago; and he brings everyone together the day after with this splendid treat. The paella feeds over 700 people and that’s with generous portions! Many towns do this during fiestas and it really is fascinating to watch it all being made, the quantities are enormous and there is so just much of it they have to use instruments like shovels to turn and mix it all together! If you are interested in creating your own giant paella, check our ingredients list below! Ingredients: • 120kg Meat Pork & Chicken (Any meat will do) • 70kg Mixed Vegetables (We like lots of peppers) • 80kg Short grain paella rice • 1 VERY VERY Big Paella Pan

Bigger & Better, Fancy That! Every year this famous event grows, what started off with just a small fancy dress after party has now grown into what is said to be the biggest fancy dress party in Europe. The party which has now cemented itself into the Benidorm’s calendar of events always starts on the Thursday after fiestas with party goers hitting the streets from as early as noon! The party starts outside Sinatra’s, with people in costume shoulder to shoulder all the way down through the square and finally breaking onto Calle Gerona. This year the road was closed off from traffic, from Morgan’s Tavern all the way down past Jumping Jacks. The party lasted all day and the crowds were treated

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

to a parade themed from “The Game of Thrones” which included a fantastic replica “Iron Throne” great costumes, theme song and real horses! The day would not have been complete without fireworks and at 9pm the sky lit up with a great display over the English Square, a perfect finish to a great day. The amount of people taking part this year was astonishing, and I can only imagine it will be even bigger next year! “The Buzz” was on the scene all day, so for those who missed it, or can´t remember here is a selection of our favourite snaps of the day! Book Early & Don´t Miss Out! Next year the party is on Thursday 13th November.

Valley Pop: inland Alicante

Given the proximity to Easter, I think it is appropriate to publish a getaway that can be very appropriate for those dates, and can serve as inspiration for a straggler that has not even clear your mini-holiday destination. My proposal to spend these days of Easter holidays is the Vall del Pop, a valley in the Alicante region of Marina Alta, in the north of the province. In this valley lies the Commonwealth of the same name made up of nine villages, Benissa, Benichembla, Murla, Alcalalí, Parcent, Jalon, Senija, Llíber and Castell de Castells. Encouragement from here and from now on everyone to know the interior of the province of Alicante, less known than the coastal zone by the vast majority of Spanish, but it has much charm and beauty, worthy to discover, admire and enjoy. I take advantage of every year a few days after Christmas and before kings, to escape from the inside, as in summer usually choose the coast, and this year I thoroughly enjoyed the Vall del Pop. Besides few days were incredibly good. BEAUTIFUL WALKS I did not visit the nine towns of the valley, but it is said there that Llíber is the most beautiful of

all. I really found charming. Also worth a walk in Jalon . Taking advantage of the visit to Landmark, you can not leave without visiting the wineries that sell wines typical of the valley, the most typical and well known is the sweet wine, a delicious sweet wine. Right in front of the trail is Bodegas Jalon , a cooperative of more than 50 producers in the area.

is environmentally friendly and uses recycled water for watering the garden and organic vegetable garden, which also provides your kitchen .

Bodegas Jalon - wINES In the village of Parcent are the Bodegas Gutiérrez de la Vega , that you can visit, do tastings and purchase their products. These wineries shot to fame when the royal family chose one of their wines, the Casta Diva Honey Harvest, for the wedding of Prince Felipe and Letizia Ortiz in 2004. But also endorse him many awards. SLEEP Re eating rural hotel Castell de la Solana in Alcalalí, a small, charming and beautiful hotel with seven rooms, with wonderful gardens and spectacular views. Also this hotel is ecofriendly, as were used in its construction materials and organic, the way we get energy

12

EATING. I’m going to be honest, if you come to this place to enjoy the holidays you can not go away without eating at one of the best restaurants in Alicante, Casa Pepa, of which I spoke recently. Not exactly in the valley, but very close, less than a half hour drive and well worth it. For dinner, the restaurant option Castell de la Solana is phenomenal. In addition, the Pop Valley is an area of many hiking trails, and although I did not do any, you’re eating that you go through the website of the valley where you can inform you of everything that happens there. I hope you take this into account when scheduling your Easter holidays, or for any other occasion. If I managed to convince you, do not fail to tell me your impressions around.

Spanish Ship Finally Leaves Gibraltar

A Spanish ship that refused to leave Gibraltar´s waters has finally departed after a 20 hour heated stand off. Spain risked provoking a serious diplomatic incident on Tuesday after sending a survey ship into Gibraltar’s territorial waters and defying orders to leave by the Royal Navy. The survey ship came within 250 metres of the entrance to the Gibraltar Port on Monday and refused direct orders from British Royal Navy patrol boats to leave. The Foreign Office said it had summoned the Spanish ambassador in London after the Ramon Margalef, a 164ft oceanographic survey ship, defied repeated orders from British Royal Navy patrol boat HMS Sabre to leave the area. The ship entered British Gibraltar

Territorial Waters around 5pm on Monday and was still there on Tuesday afternoon. According to radio exchanges overheard by a local ship enthusiast onshore, the captain of the Spanish vessel insisted he was carrying out survey work with the permission of the Spanish government and continued to ignore instructions and continue to breach and violate the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) governing the right to innocent passage. In a statement, Prime Minister David Cameron´s office said. “Our view on this, about the importance of the territorial integrity of our sovereign waters, is unchanged. It is very important. We have communicated that to the Spanish government.”

It’s all you need for a great read.

It´s a Small World

"Its a small world" is a great name for a restaurant and for me I think the name is very important. I went along to meet Paul and Linda who have been operating the restaurant "It's A Small World" since the year 2000. Previously with a restaurant in Holland just outside Amsterdam they came to look for their life in Spain and found it in Albir. At first looking around for business premises in Benidorm before being put off by the high costs of

rent and key money, then after being introduced to Albir a small place in comparison but with a bright future at the time. Paul told me "it was full of construction works a number of developments, appartments and villas the building boom was inviting to us and the prospect of having lots of residents and tourists coming to the area." "Then we opened with the idea of offering the same

14

business model we had in Holland, you can come for steaks, salads or just for pancakes and a beer." "Something for everyone has always been our aim". Recently refurbished the luxurious surroundings are not only comfortable but also very interesting with a great concept of design. The local was extended into next door within 6 months of their opening 13 years ago and now the reform is has made it even more cosy and and superb restaurant. Paul told me that the open kitchen was the idea from the start so the customers can see the fresh produce being used and the chefs at work, also the chefs can interact with the other staff and clients. "Each year we re investment into making the restaurant better, the outside terrace can be enjoyed all year around seating area for 70 guests". My dining experience included homemade tomato soup followed with a tender fillet steak served with salad and sauté potatoes. The wine selection unlike other restaurants has a wider range from other counties. House wine and the Small World Special Rioja cost only 12.50€ Also there are wines from Chile - South Africa California also from 12.50€ Other favourites include El Coto - Torres Sangre de Toro. I chose a favourite red of mine called Enrique Mendoza Cabernet Sauvigon. There is a kids menu that offers a selection of yummy favourites, chicken nuggets, pastas, sausage and kids burgers. All you need to satisfy the young ones together with a Kids cornerwith a TV showing cartons.

The main meals on the menu include a selection of fish dishes, Plaice baked in butter, Salmon, Scampi, Sole and Tilapia. Many other favorites such as the rack of lamb with honey wine sauce, Dancing Duck with mango peach sauce, Surf and Turf, Steaks, Pork Tenderloin and Chicken Saté with homemade Peanut Butter Sauce with a little spice. Mouth watering food for all tastes. Lovley Big Salads are a variety of four tasty dishes served on a huge plate. To finalise a simply superb dining experience there are nine scrummy desserts including Crepes Apple Cake Cheesecake Chocolate Mousse. Visit Albir soon and "The Small World" is waiting for you. “Nice place”

Reviewed October 24, 2013 Nice plate, friendly straff, but too expensive compared to other restaurants in Albir offering the same

“Tapas Restaurant”

Reviewed September 26, 2013 Very nice restaurant with excellent food. You can choose from the menu for starters, main courses etc or you can have Tapas. Service very good and there is plenty of outdoor seating.

“Best restaurant in albir”

Reviewed June 28, 2013 via mobile We eat here 2 - 3 times per month. Always perfect. Stylish with great food, and reasonable priced (not to be compared with 10 euro chinese, this is a classy restaurant). A must visit in Albir!

“Fantastic food & luxurious service”

Reviewed June 25, 2013 This is absolut the best restaurant in Albir. The owners realy know what quality is. The prices are a little bit over the average, but is it worth every penny. Also the best restaurant for romantic dinners:)

Corky’s Penny Farthing C/Derramador, Benidorm

“Fantastic!!!”

Reviewed November 13, 2013 The food was just like home, unlike most of the cheap crap you get in most of the other cafes. Customer service was great! What a lovely couple. wishing most places in England took so much time to be polite and friendly. Will defiantly be visiting again on my next Benidorm trip. We went here for at least 2meals a day.

“Superb food and great value !!”

“Good food, excellent value, genuinley friendly service.”

“What a fabulous little place!”

Reviewed October 28, 2013 via mobile Simple food done well, best chips in benidorm. Friendly service, tables in sun or shade and free wi fi, great value even by benidorms standards.

“food great.”

Reviewed October 27, 2013 Loved this restaurant. We were out and about at the start of our holiday, finding our feet as they would say, when we got talking to this lovely couple Steve and Gail who are the owners. They are ever so friendly and the staff Andy and Debbie the same, We ate breakfast and lunch here everyday, best fry in Benidorm. I loved their coffee, a proper good mug of home coffee. Anyone visiting Benidorm must stop in to meet these lovely people, their staff and try their good food.

Weekly updates of what the people say

who have been here on holiday.

Reviewed November 19, 2013 NEW only ever had drinks here but we were always met with a smile and a chat. The prices were very good along with the service. Yes sometimes you had to wait for a meal but everything is cooked fresh so waiting 15 minutes for a full English breakfast is no hardship. The location is perfect just a few meters from the beach.

“Great location, great food, fabulous value”

Reviewed October 27, 2013 I came across the Penny Farthing early on during my holiday in Benidorm and I have to say I’m glad that I did. I had the most fantastic breakfast as well as the best fish & chips I have ever tasted, it was so white and fluffy and the batter was fabulous !!! The staff were very friendly and the the service was great. It’s also great value for money. I can highly recommend this restaurant, definitely worth a visit.

“Fantastic little cafe bar”

Reviewed October 29, 2013 I recently visited Corky’s Penny Farthing and the the food was excellent. I had the small breakfast which was lovely and far from being small !! I returned for my evening meal and I had the tandoori chicken with rice, home made chips, salad and mint sauce. The chicken was amazing. The staff here are really friendly and the food is not only lovely but also great value for money !!! I will definitely be back !!!

“A must visit!!!”

Refuel C/ San Pedro 10 | Old Town. Benidorm

Reviewed September 28, 2013 My partner and I eat here on a regular basis in the winter months and infrequently in the summer and we have never once been disappointed by either the quality of food or service. The location is amongst the best in the whole of the Old Town, yet there is NO premium in charges for either food or drink. Fabulous...

Reviewed April 2, 2013 Such a great little bar/ hidden away just above the famous ‘dove park’ Refuel is a right little sun trap! Once there you won’t want to leave your table all day, food is simple but good and very reasonable. “A Terrace to die for.”

Reviewed April 2, 2013 This has got to be our favourite daytime bar/ restaurant. Friendly staff. Good food (including a selection of home made curries). I haven’t tried their breakfasts but I’m told by those who have that they are excellent value. Quite apart from that, the outdoor, sun drenched terrace overlooks the Poniente promenade and beach.

Men’s Heritage Knits The Return Of The Heritage Knit Maybe you’ve noticed a bit of a chill in the air of late. Perhaps the spectre of frosty winter days looming on the horizon has entered your consciousness, and you’ve put your lighter layers and aloha shirts to bed at the bottom of your wardrobe. As the cooler weather arrives, your inner sartorial clock tells you it’s time to layer up with something more substantial. It’s knitwear season. The past few years have seen designers take a renewed interest in traditional knitwear, who along with most discerning dressers recognise the practical and aesthetic merits of heritage knits. In this piece, we present a considered edit of the finest heritage woollens to cosy up with for AW13 and beyond… The Cable Knit Easily identifiable by its rope-like weave, the cable knit’s intricate appearance and texture-rich appeal is not purely visual; the knitting technique was devised long before the invention of technical and synthetic fibres, when heat-retention and waterproofing relied primarily on the density of a material.

The cable knitting technique provides one of the most dense and narrowest-gauge weaves, ensuring superb insulation for the wearer. The cable knit also has the added benefits of being robust and durable – its origins lie in the garments of outdoor working men, such as fisherman and farm hands, who required hard-wearing garments to keep them warm and dry in the face of inclement weather. The coarse, untreated yarn used in cable jumpers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had a certain amount of natural animal oil present in the wool, which provided a form of waterproofing – this was often enhanced by giving finished garments an extra coating of oil or wax. In the twentyfirst century, things have evolved; whilst the modern man would see little point in oiling his cable knit, the superb insulation and aesthetic virtues of the jumper are still appreciated. A wide variety of cable knits can be found this season, in all manner of complex patterns and plush fabrics. Pure wool and alpacacashmere blends are a real indulgence and will never date; if cared for properly, a good cable knit will see you through many a winter to come.

Crafts for Christmas

It gets dark earlier, there's snow on the mountains and Christmas looms. Well, no problem these days getting the pudding or the turkey, and you can buy those nice English Christmas cards in lots of places along the coast. Remains that old problem of what to get the man or woman who already has everything. You can walk into a department store with your bank

card, but then it's a choice between ties and socks for the man, or a silk scarf and bath salts for the woman. Ugh! Amata, the craft association in Alicante, has come up with a suggestion. Rather than spend an hour fighting your way through the department store, why not have a leisurely stroll through their Sunday morning market in La Nucia? Each week some 10 to 15 craft stalls set up shop in the Plaça dels Músics, a square to one side of the main road through La Nucia, and display a variety of goods in which you're bound to find something really different. Something unique, something you won't find in any store; you might find it in a gallery, but not at this price. All of it genuine craftwork or, as Amata puts it in their registered slogan, "Artesanía de Autor". Each Sunday different people turn up; there might be Chema with his hand-bound replica medieval books, Sonja with unusual designs in silver jewelry, Malcolm with steam jewelry (old watch movements mounted as ear rings), Almudena with hand painted cushions and wall hangings, Amparo or Elena with patchwork, apliqué animals and aprons, Vito with beautifully forged iron, Carmen with artistic pottery or Joan with wooden toys and puzzles. They set up at 10 and leave for a well-earned lunch at 2. Some of them will be working beside their stall and you can watch, ask questions (quite a few can speak English) or place an order for a unique

Spartan Selected For Texas Trip Kristian Lee Kane Rodriguez has been specially selected for a trip to America be part of an exclusive training camp with an all European team for the FBU. Born and raised in La Nucia, Kristian thought he was a quiet guy who never excelled at anything. He found his love of American football after reading Japanese anime and found a comic called Eyeshield 21 about American Football. Kristian wanted to take his new found passion to the next level and looked for a place to train and play and right on his door step, he found the “La Nucia Spartans.” On Saturday, November 2 the first American Football Clinic in Spain was held at the sports centre in La Nucia. It was organized by the Football University (FBU). The Clinic was taught by former player and scout Cecil Martin from the Football University League. There were 30 players from different parts of Spain who participated in this training and try out day with one of the legends of the NFL. After the day had ended Cecil Martin was calling names and handing team shirts to the players chosen. One week later Kristian received an email informing him not only he made the cut but much to his surprise he had been selected to visit the United States and take part in a FBU (Footbal University) training camp. This camp is one-of-a-kind and is an invitation-only football camp experience, because they seek to train only the athletes who are the most serious about their football. The camp is taught by their expert faculty of former and current NFL coaches who have a passion for sharing this experience with young athletes. Only one other player was selected, Javier Carrasco from Madrid. Kristian will hope to be travelling with his new team mate to San Antonio, Texas from the 29th of December of 2013 till the 5th of January of 2014.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

Take the first few days of the week for yourself and relax as much as possible. It’s a great time for light socializing or puttering around the house, but not for big emotional business. Wednesday through Friday are much more intense, and you should find yourself letting go of some old baggage that you’re only now realizing has been holding you back for quite some time. Once that’s out of the way, the weekend will be clear for great, energetic fun. You ought to impress someone important with your (possibly newfound) talents.

CANCER

Drink an extra cup of coffee on Monday and Tuesday, or do whatever else it takes to keep your brain buzzing, because it’s vital that you pay attention at all times - there are just too many signals you could miss otherwise. Sometime on Wednesday morning, your natural energy picks up enough to float you through the rest of the week pretty easily. You may want to take time out to help a friend or your sweetheart with an emotional issue. The weekend brings a major purchase or huge party something big and memorable.

LIBRA

Your brainpower is revved up and ready to go as the week begins, so tackle tough work problems, school papers or just some crazy Sudoku puzzles at the first opportunity. You should surprise everyone, even yourself. Spend extra time with friends and family on Wednesday and Thursday, as they need you more than they’re letting on. You may want to try to bring them out a little, but don’t push it. The weekend should be way more fun and lighthearted - a party of some kind would suit you perfectly.

CAPRICORN

The people you meet or hang out with on Monday and Tuesday may drive you a little crazy with their inability to focus - it’s as if you’re surrounded by hummingbirds! Just roll your eyes and get on with your own business. Wednesday through Friday are much more direct for you, your friends and your coworkers, and you should make sure you address big issues while you’ve got everyone’s attention. The weekend might be kind of a slog for you, with too many social engagements or appointments. Try to pace yourself so you don’t end up exhausted!

TAURUS

Monday and Tuesday are perfect for any detail-oriented task, as your willingness to take extra time and look at things closely is peaking. This is happening just as your life is starting to feel more cluttered! The second half of the week is much more focused on family and romance, and your intuitions should mostly be spot-on. You may want to sit back a bit and see if you can learn a thing or two about the people who are most important to you. Watch out for gratuitous displays of ego this weekend - yours as well as others’!

LEO

You’re at your best in the middle of a group - almost any group - early this week. Try not to go solo if you can help it, and look around for teams to join or lead. Your efforts should be rewarded handsomely. Wednesday through Friday are great for romance or family, as your natural warmth is as obvious as it is comforting. Reach out to the right person. The weekend is full of positive, fiery energy, and you suddenly realize that you’ve regained your confidence in an important area of your life.

SCORPIO

Look closely at every document you come across on Monday and Tuesday. It’s not that people are trying to cheat you; rather, the details intrigue you and get you thinking differently. Your confidence and emotional energy are quite strong later in the week, and it’s a great time to improve your romantic situation in some way. Dating and long-term relationships should each bring new satisfaction. Ego issues could arise this weekend, so take a little extra care with those who seem more sensitive than usual.

AQUARIOUS

You’re full of creative energy early this week, and should definitely make use of it in some positive way. Maybe you’re exploring art or finding new ways to please your sweetie - do whatever works for you. Emotions start to well up from deep within you on Wednesday morning, and the next few days may be filled with some long-buried issues you need to deal with. Don’t let them dominate your life, but don’t ignore them, either. Your friends or family are pushing you in one direction this weekend, but you may be able to talk them into a compromise if you’re firm.

GEMINI

Don’t worry about responsibilities on Monday or Tuesday, because your easy energy should make life roll along without any serious effort. Have fun with it, and share the wealth with family or friends. In contrast, you’re much more focused during the latter half of the week, especially when you’re dealing with work or school-related projects. You may find that you achieve quite a bit more than you had expected. Fun banter and conversation fill your weekend, though you may want to watch out for others who could take your opinions more seriously than you do.

VIRGO

You’re at your best in the middle of a group - almost any group - early this week. Try not to go solo if you can help it, and look around for teams to join or lead. Your efforts should be rewarded handsomely. Wednesday through Friday are great for romance or family, as your natural warmth is as obvious as it is comforting. Reach out to the right person. The weekend is full of positive, fiery energy, and you suddenly realize that you’ve regained your confidence in an important area of your life.

SAGITTARIUS

Other people are a bit more trouble than usual early this week, but not in any scary or crazy way. Just expect more complaining and backbiting than usual - and yes, that’s certainly possible! Your display of flexibility breaks the ice midweek and makes Thursday and Friday much more bearable for everyone involved. Make sure you’re ready to lead the way. Your good energy over the weekend manifests as devotion between you and your friends, family or sweetheart, so make the most of it. It’s a great time to improve a personal situation.

PISCIS

Things are surprisingly mutable on Monday and Tuesday, so if you’ve been meaning to make some changes in your life, go for it! People might be a little shocked, but don’t let that hold you back. Waves of creative energy wash over you midweek, and you may find that you’re much better able to handle emotional issues that have been on the back burner for just a little too long. You need to focus on something this weekend, though you may not know what it is until you see it sitting in front of you.

Threadworms

Threadworms are small, thin, white, thread-like worms between 2 mm and 13 mm long. They infect human intestines. They are common in children, but anyone of any age can be affected. Threadworm infection is not normally harmful, the main problem being troublesome itching and disturbed sleep. Sometimes the affected area can become sore. In severe cases the child may develop tummy pain, loss of appetite and weight loss. In girls, eggs may be laid in the tube to the bladder and cause problems passing urine or bedwetting. Threadworms live for about 5-6 weeks in the intestines .During the night, the female worms lay tiny eggs around the anus (back passage). The eggs are only visible with a microscope, but cause itching around the anus. The sufferer then scratches around the anus to relieve the itching without realising during sleep. During scratching, eggs get on to the fingers and under the nails. The eggs are then transferred to the mouth from the fingers. This creates a cycle of infection that goes on and on. In addition to this, threadworm eggs can survive for up to two weeks outside the body. They can live in clothing and bedding, end up in carpets and even toothbrushes!

It’s all you need for a great read.

Treatment for threadworms is a combination of medication and hygiene measures. All household members, including adults and those without symptoms, must be treated. See your Family Doctor for treatment and take note of the following instructions: - Wash nightwear, bed linen, towels, and cuddly toys. This can be done at normal temperatures so long as the washing is well rinsed. - Vacuum and damp-dust your home. Throw out the cloth after use. Pay particular attention to bedrooms, including vacuuming mattresses. - Thoroughly clean the bathroom and throw out the cloth after use. - Wear close-fitting underpants or knickers in bed to help prevent scratching. Wearing cotton gloves to bed can also help. - Every morning shower or have a bath to get rid of any eggs laid overnight. You must do this straight away after getting up from bed. - Change and wash nightwear every day. Anybody can catch threadworms. Although part of the treatment is strict hygiene measures, this is solely to break the life cycle of the worms and does not mean that sufferers are in any way un-clean!

6 Ways to Snack Smarter They Plan Snacks Although you wouldn’t sit down to an extra lunch or dinner, an extra snack seems harmless. Beware: A day’s worth of noshes can add up to a meal’s worth of calories. If you have an apple with two tablespoons of nut butter midmorning, scarf down a handful of pretzels after lunch, grab a cup of low-fat yogurt to power through a long afternoon, and munch on a bowl of popcorn at 9:00 p.m., you’ve eaten an extra 600 calories (hello, that’s dinner!). Two snacks -- one midmorning and one midafternoon -- are probably all you need, says Susan B. Roberts, PhD, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University and a coauthor of The “I” Diet. So instead of grazing willy-nilly, map out your snacks in advance. “Take your total daily calories and divide them into three equal-calorie meals and one

or two 200-calorie snacks,” says Julie Upton, RD, a coauthor of The Real Skinny. For a 2,000-calorie diet -- what the typical active woman needs -- that’s 533 calories each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus two 200-calorie extras. (If you eat lightly in the a.m., steal 150 calories from breakfast and tack them onto supper, so you have 383 for breakfast, 533 for lunch, and 683 for dinner.)

Portugal claimed a 3-2 win over Sweden to send them to the World Cup finals

Good Week Vettel breaks another record

Another race; another win; another record: Sebastian Vettel’s 12th victory of 2013 at the U.S. GP on Sunday was also his eighth in a row, beating Michael Schumacher’s tally of consecutive wins in a season. According to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, Vettel “was pretty emotional at the end of the race because he’s beaten the record of one of his idols and it seemed unlikely that kind of record would be beaten.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant hat-trick to give Portugal a 3-2 win in Sweden and send them to the World Cup finals. Portugal brought a 1-0 lead into their second leg in Solna and after a forgettable opening 45 minutes the game came to life in spectacular fashion with Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic taking centre stage. Ronaldo opened the scoring on 50 minutes before Ibrahimovic then claimed a quick-fire brace to give

the home side real hope with Portugal only leading on away goals. But then Ronaldo took over as he claimed two more wonderful goals in two-minutes to kill off the tie and send Portugal to the World Cup finals next summer. And the tournament would represent a nadir in the Paris St-Germain striker's career. He has never scored at a finals having made two substitute appearances in 2002 and three starts in 2006.

World Cup woe for Zlatan

At the age of 32, Sweden skipper Zlatan Ibrahimovic may not have another opportunity to play in a World Cup finals. And the tournament would represent a nadir in the Paris St-Germain striker’s career. He has never scored at a finals having made two substitute appearances in 2002 and three starts in 2006.
