Felix Camargo is the inventor of the sweetest, most well-known and bestselling souvenir of the city: “La tarta de Benidorm” (The cake Benidorm). Born in Malagon and trained as a pastry chef in Madrid, he moved in the early 80s to the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca. That was when he saw a niche in the market there was no defining food souvenir, it had to be cheap so he used local products such as almonds,

Have you ever wondered about the crowds gathering around that cardboard box on street corners, have you been tempted or been conned? Thieves, Con Artists and Scammers go out of their way to take advantage of others not just here but all over the world. We are all meant to feel safe in our homes, on our holidays and in our businesses but that’s not always possible. We have put together this handy guide which will work not just here but anywhere it is packed full of information and top tips about staying safe and what to look out for whether you live here, work here or your here on your holidays.

Shoplifters

Shoplifters can take on any type of personality and appearance, be wary of suspicious activity especially for people in twos or threes. Often one will keep you busy or act as a look out while the others steal from you and

in more cases than one the tall dodgy looking man who you think is up to no good will just catch your attention while their partner in crime, as innocent as they may look is the actual threat. Shoplifter tactics: Palming: This is the most common technique. The offender places his hands over an item, removes it from the counter or rack and drops it into his/her pocket or purse. Clothing Gimmicks: Sometimes shoplifters try wearing the articles they are stealing, wither by concealing under other clothes or wearing in plain sight. Price Switch: Switching price tags is another tactic used, taking a tag from a less expensive or a sale item and attaching to more expensive item or any merchandise not on sale. Keep your business safe by training staff to be aware and vigilant, keep expensive items in the centre of the store, put up

convex mirrors and avoid blind spots you may have created with new displays.

Thieves & Pickpockets

Thieves rely on the trust that good people place in others and also the art of distraction and sleight of hand. A person might never think that an older woman would steal something from them but your eyes only need to be diverted for just a moment, many different tactics are used to distract you and this type of theft occurs more often than people realize it does. Protect your valuables: Always store valuables in your front or inside pockets, pickpockets will rarely bother to pickpocket your inner pocket unless they have seen something valuable there, the inside pocket is one of the safest places to keep money and valuables if you don´t have an inside pocket keep everything to the front or in a money belt. >>>

It’s all you need for a great read. >>> Don´t Fiddle:

Touching or fiddling with the pocket where you carry your belongings tells pickpockets where you carry your valuables. This is a regrettable error and drops a huge hint of where you keep your things. Try not to fiddle around with money, thieves will take any opportunity to snatch it out of your hands, count your money at home or hotel and keep track of your spending. Shorten the strap on any purse or bag: Don't dangle the purse loose the strap should be short enough that you can keep the purse and its openings under your elbow. Close zippers and clasps on purses and backpacks and keep all on your front in busy crowded areas. Car Safety: Park in a well-lit, well-trafficked area of the parking lot at stores and malls avoid secluded and dark areas. Keep all valuables out of sight and place all belongings in the boot or locked glove box if you have to put them in the passenger compartment, put them on the floor and cover with a blanket.

Scams

Don´t be fooled, there are plenty of scams around and people are always thinking up new ones and different ways to pull off existing scams.

Rigged gambling games: The Shell Game (Trileros) is often seen in the squares and streets of the city, nearest to tourist hot spots. It can be played on almost any flat surface, but on the streets it is often seen played on a cardboard box. Friends and family of the operator (Shills) are used to give passes by confidence to waste their money; the game is rigged as the operators trick is sleight of hand and has total control of who wins and losses. Do not gamble for money with strangers or outside of licensed and

well-regarded gambling venues. Prostitutes: Sexually-attractive people are a fine distraction, and conspicuously available ones even more so. However, sampling the local streetwalkers puts you at risk of crime. Prostitutes can be used as bait for a variety of scams such as leading you into an armed robbery or mugging or having a second person go through your clothes while you are out of them. Fool’s Gold: Do not be tempted to buy jewellery or gold from any unauthorised person or business, no matter how real it may feel or look. This should be common sense; real gold is being bought for good money in proper shops so why sell it on the street for nothing? Don´t be a fool and buy from dodgy street sellers!

what´s On

Bobbys Bar booming

So who said Benidorm was quiet? Popular Bobbys Bar in Calle Ibiza is mobbed almost every day so if you’re thinking of dropping by arrive early or you will find it hard to get a seat. So why is Bobbys is so popular? Can you imagine, this bar was closed for ages like many empty business premises sitting doing nothing and for most people it is a very common sight. We all tend to just shrug it off as another casualty of the recession seeing failure after failure but there really are success stories out there and Bobbys is just one of them. The Bar was only reopened at the end of last summer, Mark and Costas took over the empty premises which honestly didn't have much going for it. There were no existing clients, a bit run down you could say and in need of a lot of TLC so who better than Mark and Costas together with son Gabi and girlfriend Ali it’s a fabulous family team. Month by month they have gradually taken on the job of improvements at the same time as having made a lot of friends and local customers. Having a background in the local bar trade working in Tiggers and The New Beatles Bar over the years it was their turn to take ownership of this old venue and turn it into something everyone can appreciate. So I went along to talk to the team to find out what's behind this success story. Mark told me "well first and most importantly we try to please everyone" "We offer the best value proper British pints we serve a good quality beer that

people know and like and charge the lowest price possible " So at 1€ a pint I asked “can you really make any money?” "Yes because we are busy and we have a good supplier, people stay longer and we now have a new covered terrace creating double the size so people can sit outside all year round". Looking at Bobbys more closely I could see for myself that the reason for their popularity other than the cheap drinks was that they really had catered for everyone, there were tea and coffee drinkers and not just any coffee they have real Italian Manuel Coffee Beans. On draught Amstel and John Smiths Bitter, they have a massive range of bottles, canned beers and ciders. You can play on a full size pool table or have a game of darts, on the TV they have sky with all the sports including the Saturday 4pm kick offs (3pm GMT) so really what more do you need? How about a covered outside terrace for smokers? Oh yes they have that too, you can hardly miss it brand new, it’s big, bright and red if you’re trying to find Bobbys you really can’t miss it! People come to relax and socialise from all ages and nationalities. This to me is the most outstanding part of the Bobbys operation; the clients are made of such a mixed bunch, British, Dutch, Spanish Locals, long term visitors and general holiday makers. All of which I might add socialise together, people are playing cards, chatting and watching sport every day. Before I could leave I was there to witness one of their drinks deliveries, three delivery guys brought in the weekend’s beer barrels and bottle crates which is no small the three of them took sometime so you can imagine it was quite a sizeable load. So really anyone who tells me it’s quiet I say quite confidently "go along to Bobbys".

Full Steam Ahead With The Benidorm casino

The construction of the Benidorm Casino has not stopped since we saw the first crane being erected Christmas Eve, you can see the progress on the building site and they really are digging deep and working at a very efficient pace. Located on the Avd. Mediterraneo you can see how fast this project is going which is a rarity here, it makes a very nice change as in Spain normally you would not see much progress at all for months, if not years!. There is a very large workforce employed on this project and with a constant stream of materials being delivered on the 3,600 square metre construction site including steel and a fair few of cement trucks. The main four storey structure will be soon complete and the internal works will soon get underway as soon as they install the cladding for the corporate facade which will be similar to other two casinos owned by the group ´Acrismatic´ which can be found in Alicante and at La Zenia Boulevard close to Torrevieja. Benidorm is already attracting visitors worldwide and will become even more popular, there has been an increase of Russian nationals visiting and moving to the surrounding towns and it will be certainly a temptation for them as well as Chinese visitors, who

are known to like to gamble. They aim to have everything complete for the summer with the deadline marked for July this year and will provide a great opportunity for employment. The president of Acrismatic, Jesus Del Alamo said “It will provide around 70 direct jobs; this could increase

depending on how the market evolves. A three-storey underground car park has also been built and is already functioning and Del Alamo also revealed before construction that Acrismatic has plans for a four-star hotel on the site “once credit starts flowing again.

Happy Campers

Throughout 2013 the campsites of benidorm enjoyed an increased occupancy, at the end of the year there was an average of 67.1% recorded, that’s higher than 2012 by almost 3 points. The happy campers were treated to some wonderful weather over the December period with very little rain and temperatures you really couldn´t argue about. Figures show that only 6.9% of people camping in Benidorm and surrounding area in December were Spanish, with the British having the highest occupancy at 70.5% followed by the Dutch at 11.4% with Belgians, German

8

and French making up the final numbers. As you walk around Benidorm in this early part of the year you will see a fair few of Hotels closed, this is quite normal for this time of year with lower visitors numbers but they will be open again soon before the Easter rush when Benidorm gets a huge influx of Spanish over their Easter breaks with also lots of Brits returning to the resort for the first taste of summer. See the centre pages for your handy pull out wall planner with all the need to know dates for the year including Easter!

shop till you drop

buzz@vistacostablanca.com We are already in the third week of January and the sales are well and truly underway, known here as "Rebajas" which obviously means SALE or REDUCTIONS you will see the Red "Rebajas" signs in one way or form in every shop window. The sales traditionally start in Spain on the 7th of January which is the day after the "Three Kings", but more and more shops have started their sales before Christmas over the last few years due to the increased trade from international Christmas tradition. There are some great bargains to be found so it really is worth taking a look at what is on offer as often prices are much cheaper than in the UK with shops boasting some great high street names but remember that you have to get your shopping done early or risk it eating into your evening with most shops closing at 2pm and re-opening in the evening after 6pm. It really is quite amazing to walk around the Old Town during the afternoon it is easy to spot the Brits because there are plenty of people who have been walking from the morning time along the beach after having breakfast. By the afternoon after a few stops along the way for coffee, beer, and a bite to eat the Old

Town is on the natural route. Arriving to closed shops and also many smaller bars closed it seems that the difference in the British culture is larger than perhaps we thought. We all know about Siesta time but really seeing shops in the January Sales Closed in prime time Shopping hours it really is bonkers especially knowing that the Brits love to shop and are used to all day shopping before getting back for tea time or perhaps dinner. There are many British and international visitors who will want to be going out for the evening so dinner early is common and normal, evening time is for entertainment and socialising and with so many night time bars and attractions who really wants to be shopping in the evening? As holiday bookings start to be made figures released for last year show that Benidorm registered 11.9 million overnight stays and that 3 out of 4 foreign visitors were British. So are the Spanish Shop owners missing the trick here? Why not keep open for the afternoon during the colder months and during the sales when lots of Brits are looking for great deals, I’m sure it would be a big surprise to see how many more shoppers from the UK and other European countries would visit them.

ELX. City of Palms

Located within the largest Palm forest in Europe. This city has two international UNESCO awards; one for its palm groves and the other for its religious play, the Misteri d’Elx which the people of the city have performed annually in August since Medieval times. The week’s play is rounded off with one of Spain’s loudest firework displays know as the Nit d’Alba. Once you have visited the Tourist Office, just above the car park, you can explore Elche by following our Elche city walking route. Why not climb the narrow steps up to the roof of the Basilica, from where you get a wonderful view over Elche and its palms. You can visit the various museums including the award winning Archaeological and History Museum or get to know more about the palms at the Huerto del Cura. Stroll through the Municipal Park and go into the Visitors Centre for an audio visual introduction to the city or take the small Tourist Train. Elche has some great shopping. The Salvador Artesano shoe factory outlet is the largest of all the Salvador Artesano shops and is a must for all shoe lovers as it is about the size of a football pitch!

Places of Interest

Tourist Office: more information about the museums, cathedral and buildings, as well as the walking routes, a summary of which is after the Ideas of things to do in Elche section. Cathedral: impressive inside and out, you can walk up to the bell tower for some great views. Huerta del Cura: a botanical garden packed with Mediterranean plants and the impressive Imperial Palm. Archaeological and History Museum: award winning interactive museum about the history of Elche. Parks & Plazas: Municipal Palm Park and La Glorieta Plaza, both lovely spaces. Shops: many boutique style shops as well as the usual collection of well known high street names in the centre plus the out of town shopping mall called the L’Aljub, the El Corte Ingles department store and the Salvador Artesano shoe factory. Elche Football Stadium: watch Elche’s football team play their home matches. Train Station: trains to Alicante and Murcia. Ideas of things to do in Elche 12

To get to know the city in one day we suggest starting from the underground car park (charged for by length of stay) with a visit to the tourist office to collect a map and more information. Spend the morning following our Elche city walking route then spend the afternoon relaxing in the municipal park admiring the range of fauna and flora. Spend the morning visiting some of the cities museums like the Archaeological and History Museum or the Huerto del Cura with the famous Imperial Palm. Then spend the afternoon shopping at the nearby L’Aljub, El Corte Ingles and Salvador Artesano shoe factory. Combine Elche with a visit to the interesting El Hondon (also known as El Fondo) nature reserve. Start at the information centre and follow their walking route around part of the salt lagoons and marshes. Then drive into Elche for a spot of lunch and enjoy the atmosphere of the historic high street and the wonderful ‘La Glorieta’. Watch one of Elche Football Club home games. The Spanish are very passionate about their football, like all of the European nations, so enjoy the atmosphere at the ground and then spend some time in the city. Visit Elche by train getting off at Elche Park (also known as Elx Parq), then walk through the municipal park to the tourist office and get to know the city. Trains run from both Orihuela and San Isidro to Elche. The Tourist Office for information about the museums and other places of interest: Remember that most museums are closed on a Monday and for siesta which is generally 14.00-16.00 in the winter and 14.00-17.00 in the summer. Archaeological Museum MAHE: located in the Palacio de Altamir it has permanent displays of Iberian and Roman pieces. Huerto del Cura Museum: is an artistic garden, covering 13,000m2 with displays of Mediterranean and tropical plants including the famous Imperial Palm. Fiesta Misteri d’Elx Museum: a two roomed museum all about the Mystery Play. Arab Bath Museum: displays the remains of an Arabic bathing house. Casa de Belen Nativity Museum. In Spain Valentine’s Day is known as “San Valentín” and is celebrat-

ed the same way as in the UK, although in Catalonia it is largely superseded by similar festivities of rose and/or book giving on La Diada de Sant Jordi (Saint George’s Day). In Portugal it is more commonly referred to as “Dia dos Namorados” (Lover’s Day / Day of those that are in love with each other). February 14th this year falls on a Friday so it's a great start to your weekend if you can plan the ideal romantic day or night. Check out the menus, gifts, ideas and much more here over the next few weeks.

“Always a quality welcome and quality food”

Reviewed 13 January 2014 Great friendly people, and smashing food if you are after a taste of home. Real value for money meals and a cracking cuppa tea. Thank you guys. PS We tried out the new cheffette, and she passed!

“Great all round”

Reviewed 11 January 2014 This was our first time in Benidorm and since we didn’t know the area, Bar Domino was recommended by a friend, we went there for the first time at the beginging of our stay and ate and drank there until we left. The food is amasing and the staff amd atmosphere is so welcoming all the time. The quiz night is also one not to miss, such a laugh!! Deffinately go back when we come again!!

“Friendly and welcoming”

Reviewed 5 January 2014 Del and crew are always welcoming and are always good for a good bit of banter. When cheffette Andy left last year we thought; “who can take his place?”. Need not have worried the new cheffettess is really good. The food is always well cooked and presented. We done we all had a really good time.

“Tip Top Venue”

Reviewed 2 January 2014 Del & Gareth really do run a very welcoming and spotlessly clean bar,The food is amazing value and the drinks are very reasonably priced, Nothing is to much trouble and if you have any queries regarding any aspect of Benidorm Del will have the answer. Really make an effort to pay a visit, I guarantee you will call time and time again and meet up with some great folk.

“New Years Eve Dinner”

“Fine Spanish dining from 4 generations family restaurant”

Reviewed 7 January 2014 we visited in June last year and visited albir for 18 days in December, while there we ate in fandango 6 times and every time was better than the previous. we have not had better food and service anywhere and the staff and chef are the best in the area, also it was great to see peter back as he was missed.if you want a really great meal and evening that is very reasonable priced you must visit fandango. We cant wait to return. Reviewed 1 January 2014 For the 2nd year running, we enjoyed New Years Eve at Very Good Fandango. For 70 Euros we had a mixed meat appetizer 1/2 lobster, fillet steak, then a refreshing iced desert. All Wine & Water was included in the price, together with a sparkling midnight toast. We were entertained by Andy Martin, who was brilliant again. The staff as always were very attentive & friendly & I cannot find the words to say what we think about Migual & his kitchen staff.

“Lovely Christmas Lunch”

Reviewed 31 December 2013 Ate here twice during our recent return visit to Albir including Christmas Day. There was a lovely welcoming atmosphere and the staff looked after us very well. The special set menu for Christmas Day was very nice and included beautiful steaks and very tasty red wine. We were also served a very tasty dessert plus a tray of sweets and glass of bubbly to finish off the meal. It was very good value for money and we enjoyed ourselves very much.

“Good food, and service is satisfactionary” Reviewed 24 December 2013 We were here with my brother and his family. December 2013. Excellent food, good wine and satisfaction service. This restaurant can be recommended.

Reviewed 27 December 2013 We came here for the 3rd time on Christmas day for lunch and asked a couple friends to join us... fix menu, including wine and all drinks...well, it was fantastic, nice portions, good mix of flavours, very interesting and creative, best of the 3 meals we have had here...service perfect...and our friends, who live here, thought it was the best dinner they had in Altea surroundings ever.....

Reviewed 29 November 2013 We first came to El Xato last year and had wanted to return many times. Once we had this chance, of course we had to let friends know we were going and so there were 11 of us for lunch. The menu is mouthwatering and the wine list one of the most extensive in the region - really, the bodega in the cellar is an Aladin’s cave of vino-culture. With so many amazing dishes on the menu it became clear that the best way to savour what El Xato could do was to take the amazing value 5 tapas + desert menu for €22.50. Treat yourself, go there and let the waiter guide you through what they can do. Tell them all your likes and dislikes and they will tailor the food to you - and it’s all home made! Most dishes originated by the family grandmother and over time have had new twists added as each generation seeks to preserve the reputation of this families excellent food.

“Spanish food with a twist”

Reviewed 17 November 2013 The Michelin guide pointed us in the direction of El Xato. If you are at the coastal area of the Costa Blanca, it is not obvious to have lunch or dinner at this restaurant. However, we certainly recommend to go here. The food is very good, Spanish with a twist. Lovely tapas-like entrees, accompanied by different types of bread.

2014Key woMen’s Hairstyle Trend

ASK the Optician:

The link between smoking and sight loss

Hairstyles have turned out to be the most necessary matter for both youth and aged people as far as the today’s world is concerned. No matter male or female both loves to give their hairs a style that suits them the best. Besides all hairstyle really matters when it comes to fashion and trend probably that’s why from celebrities to a normal person all want’s their style to be more stylish and trendy. Similarly for the coming season hairstylists have given a number of varieties in hairstyle trends like long hairstyles, medium hairstyles, short hairstyles, curly hairstyles etc. well as we talked earlier there are a number of styles for your hairs and when it comes to choice it’s really difficult for one to choose which is the right choice for him or her. As far as women are concerned they are more conscious about hairstyle, probably that’s why they are given more styles every season as compared to men. As far as 2014 is concerned for women the short hairstyles with different trendy touch has remained on top as usual and no matter it’s a celebrity or a normal person all loves to go for this style because besides being trendy it also gives you an ease to maintain it. What you need to do is to first get a little bit of knowledge about the styles that you are going to apply on yourself and if you have a hair dresser than you don’t have to worry just choose one style and go for it without wasting your time on thinking that which style to choose. But the style must be the one that suits you the best; moreover your face structure should make a combination to help you look pretty. Once you choose a style then you don’t have to worry about anything just stay cool and let your decision be the best. One tip which I would like to give to the young girls is don’t go behind trend only. You must keep it in mind to choose the right choice, which should make you, look prettier besides being trendy.

Jorge Martinez de Lizarduy Araico, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Benidorm

Q. How can smoking affect my eyes? A. When you inhale a cigarette, approximately 4,000 chemicals such as nicotine, tar, arsenic and ammonia enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Some of these substances cause blood vessels at the back of the eye to burst, damaging the macula and ultimately leading to loss of vision. This is known as Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of severe vision loss for people over the age of 55 in the Western world. Smokers more than double their risk of developing AMD. AMD is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes progressive loss of central vision. AMD affects the macula – the part of the retina responsible for clear vision needed for daily activities such as reading or driving. According to the World Health Organisation the only established modifiable risk factor is smoking. As well as the early onset of AMD, smokers also have a higher likelihood of developing cataracts, a common cause of blindness and visual impairment. In addition, nicotine slowly poisons the optic nerve, causing impaired colour vision. Specsavers Opticas is currently offering free eye tests. It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

The details are overwhelming on Monday and Tuesday. Something small, a proverbial straw on the camel’s back, will be the end of you - unless you do something healthy for your mind and body. Something to blow off steam. Sprinting is one way to go. Or group sports. Wednesday and Thursday, you’ll be so wrapped up in your own head that you’ll forget to pay attention to someone who needs you. As soon as you focus on them, all else will figure itself out. Friday and Saturday are dreamy and portentous, but Sunday is light-hearted, fun and exciting.

CANCER

You are attuned to the edges of things on Monday, the contrasts, the subtle distinctions. You are perspicacious to the last. Dive into a project that needs some cleaning up, that puts you in touch with people you admire and that lets you enjoy yourself. Wednesday and Thursday, enjoyment will be at a minimum - a bump in the road in your relationship with someone at home challenges you - and the work week ends on a hazy note. You go into the weekend unsure of where you stand. Do something for yourself this weekend. Cancel social plans. Be a free agent.

LIBRA

TAURUS

Your life blossoms like a flower this week. Monday and Tuesday you are happier and more engaged than you’ve been in a while. And your heart is thumping faster than ever. You and you-know-who make quite a team. Cash, companionship and concerts are in the stars Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday return you to real life, but everything is brighter and better than usual. Some fairly deep emotions come to the surface on Friday - you clearly care about this person - and Saturday sparks a passionate interaction. Sunday finds you a bit more distant.

LEO

There is less money to go around at the outset of the week than you’d like. Such is life. But strangely, you find being thrifty sort of fun. You can get into eating noodles. By the middle of the week, you are so distracted by the funny things falling out of friends’ mouths you are barely thinking about money (or the lack thereof). A creative date on Thursday might not cost you a dime. On Friday and Saturday, deep issues and family matters are in the stars, as is a strong sense of ego. Sunday is fiery and wild and romantic - you lucky dog.

SCORPIO

A nagging voice in your head is like your own private DVD commentary on Monday and Tuesday. If only it had a sense of humor! Your meticulousness might be your downfall: There are just too many details to deal with. Then, on Wednesday, the irrelevant periphery falls away and you find yourself staring into the eyes of someone you feel awfully strongly about. Ah, beauty! Ah, romance! Your infatuation with this person has you feeling possessive on Friday, but give them space. Saturday you sense that some major changes in your life are afoot, and Sunday you’re glowing.

A secret finds its way into your awareness on Monday or Tuesday. You’ve become someone’s confidante. You are flattered by their trust. Internally, this week is quite positive for you - although midweek you may find you don’t have much patience for small talk, decision-making or social situations, what with all the thoughts swimming through your head - but by Friday you’ll find yourself surrounded by people who are genuinely interested in you. They are drawn to you. They practically idolize you. Saturday and Sunday you get a bit carried away in all the attention.

A simple fact - small, beautiful, true - means the world to you on Monday. It solves a puzzle you’ve been working on for weeks in your mind. It may put you in the mood to conduct still more research, place some calls, advance to the next step in a project. Or maybe you’re ready for a new project: Wednesday is a great day to start something, and Thursday you have energy to spare. Your detachment from emotional matters on Friday puts you in the ideal frame of mind to make a big decision, and Saturday and Sunday find you racing with full speed toward accomplishing a major goal.

Everything is peachy-keen on the surface, but an interest in other people’s motives has you looking deeply at your life on Monday and Tuesday. It’s unclear what the future holds and, especially, what your financial outlook is - so be careful in business deals. Wednesday and Thursday are less about business and more about buddies (you might meet someone new, or connect with a pal in a way you never have before), but Friday once again finds you focused on career matters. On Saturday, avoid situations where you might feel exposed. Then, on Sunday, race out of the house and embrace the day.

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

GEMINI

Every time you add up the numbers on Monday, you come up with a different sum. Frustrating! Your head is clearly on other matters. (On other continents?) Steel your focus on Tuesday and try to get the paperwork dealt with. Wednesday and Thursday you can turn off your brain and be purely on the lookout for a good time. Romance, too, is in the stars. Friday you find yourself entering into a friendship - or a relationship - you feel unsure about. Saturday you’re in observation mode. But Sunday, relationships and partners are positive themes. So is adventure.

VIRGO

You are perfectly happy to spend Monday and Tuesday cleaning out your car, cleaning up your office - cleaning anything, really. You have headphones. You’re in a good mood. And you love it when your life is tidy. New projects figure strongly the first half of the week, but don’t put your money where your mouth is, not yet at least. Be careful about cash flow, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday it may dawn on you that some of your goals are unrealistic, but you’re the kind of person motivated by the impossible. The weekend finds you restless and daring.

SAGITTARIUS

No matter how much you deserve a bonus, the start of the week is not the time to be dropping hints. You’re better off making sure you don’t drop your coffee. You’ll be doing forty million things at once. The fast-forward blur of Monday and Tuesday slows down to a normal pace on Wednesday and Thursday - you may even have enough time to be social midweek (what a luxury!) - and by Friday you’re in bona fide slow-mo. This gives you plenty of time to ponder your future. The weekend, especially Sunday, is ideal for goal setting.

POWER SUDOKU CROSSWORD

PISCES

Your intuition won’t let you down at the start of the week. Feel free to make a decision before you have all the facts you think you need. If necessary, you can always alter course as new information arrives. The new information that arrives on Wednesday and Thursday may strangely enough come in the form of dissention from someone you usually agree with. Give them the benefit of the doubt, but if you suspect they’re walking all over you - as might be the case on Friday or Saturday - well, you are too wonderful for that. Take a stand and you’ll be rewarded on Sunday.

When Gwyneth Paltrow gave up dairy, I rolled my eyes. And when Zooey Deschanel waxes poetic about "g-free" cupcakes, it makes me want to bake some gluten-licious ones stat. In the past few years celebrities have made wheat, dairy, nuts -- you name it -- into public enemies, mostly, it seems, because cutting out these foods helps them fit into their redcarpet dresses. But I found myself wondering if I'd been too quick to judge when my doctor prescribed an elimination diet after medication failed to get my chronic weekly migraines under control. He told me to give up alcohol, chocolate, and bacon -- in other words, joy -- plus nuts and any foods containing nitrates, sulfites, or MSG for an entire month. I did it and my migraines disappeared. Then I reintroduced these foods one by one. After some trial and error I figured out that red wine, nitrates (in my beloved bacon), and aspartame were my key food triggers. The experience made me more sympathetic to friends who have suddenly started pestering waiters with questions about whether a sauce contains soy or cream, because they believe a certain food group is at the root of their breakouts, digestive issues, or other health woes. It turns out that food allergies really are on the rise, although experts aren't sure why. As many as one in 20 children and one in 25 adults are now allergic to some type of food. Peanut allergies have tripled in the last decade, and more than two million Americans have celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the body can't process gluten. A growing pile of research suggests that certain foods can also play a role in chronic problems like migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, asthma, and more.

Garmin’s Vívofit Fitness Band Will Remind You to Get Off the Couch With its new Vívofit fitness tracker, Garmin’s entering a market that’s getting more and more crowded every day. But while other fitness bands allow motivated athletic types to set daily goals and strive to improve themselves, the Vívofit seems to cater to those of us who need a lot more encouragement to get off the sofa, or leave our desks to take a quick walk around the street. And that’s a good thing. The Vívofit’s always-on display lets you keep track of your steps taken, calories burned, how far you are from your fitness goal, and other metrics—but it also features a thin red bar that slowly gets longer and longer after an hour of inactivity, reminding you to get up and at least go for a quick stroll to reset it. Garmin's Vívofit Fitness Band Will Remind You To Get Off the Couch But even more useful for those of us who don’t exactly consider ourselves fitness enthusiasts is the Vívofit’s ability to monitor a wearer’s average activity level, and then automatically set achievable daily

goals. As these goals are met, they increase from day to day, but at a pace that won’t leave someone feeling frustrated or discouraged if they fail. It’s like strapping a personal trainer to your wrist, but one that understands that staying active isn’t easy for everyone, instead of screaming at you when you fail. The Vívofit also tracks your sleep patterns at night—a metric that can be as important as your fitness level when it comes to your health—and of course all of this information is automatically and wirelessly synced to an app and Garmin’s online Connect community so you can monitor your progress, or compete against friends. Available in five different colours at launch, the Vívofit fitness bands will be available sometime in early 2014 and will sell for £100, or £140 if you want one with a bundled heart rate monitor. The bands are of course completely waterproof and can even be worn in the shower, and what might make the Vívofit the new must have fitness tracker is that the non-rechargeable battery is good for an entire year before it needs to be swapped out for a new one.

Man Utd Title Race Over

Good Week palace move up

David Moyes made all the right noises and pulled all the brave faces - but he was fooling nobody by declining to call time on Manchester United's title challenge. There was no talk of throwing in the towel or taking aim at anything less than top spot from United's manager as Moyes continues to endure a tough initiation in succession to Sir Alex Ferguson. Stamford Bridge, however, was where it all ended. Chelsea's 3-1 win cut United adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal by 14 points and they are hardly closer to Manchester City or the team who beat them in relative comfort on Sunday. Moyes was never going to concede defeat, despite the mounting evidence, but there will be no 21st title for Manchester United this season and the Scot faces a major rebuilding project before another will

come into view. It is time to adjust the sights and focus on claiming a top-four place in the Premier League as the best this season has to offer. United have lost seven out of 22 Premier League games. This is not an unflattering reflection on a side that are now reduced to the ranks rather than leading from the front, the position they made their own on so many occasions. Reality has hit the "Theatre Of Dreams" and the cold blast feels even worse when Chelsea do not even have to go near their highest gear to take the three points. It should be stressed that Moyes was without Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, two players who might have made better use of United's short early superiority than Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck.

Jason Puncheon scored the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace moved off the bottom of the Premier League table with a victory against Stoke. Puncheon missed a penalty in the defeat at Tottenham last week but capitalised on Oussama Assaidi’s error to score with a low shot just after half-time.

Spurs Staying Sharp

Tim Sherwood's dream start to management shows no sign of slowing. Michael Laudrup should be starting to get worried as Swansea extended their winless run to eight games with a 3-1 defeat at the Liberty Stadium, This was Spurs fifth successive away victory which equals their away form record. The great Bill Nicholson was in charge of Tottenham the last time they recorded five successive wins away from home, the victory over Swansea City matches a record which has stood since 1960 this is certainly a fantastic achievement for the new Spurs boss especially after only being in the hot seat for a short time, Spurs fans are on the road to achieving that champions league place that was robbed from them last season but they have one of biggest challenges in the Premier League up against them next as they will be at home against Manchester City on Wednesday 29th January, the coming weekend will be FA Cup Matches.
