The big television switch/off has started, last Thursday hundreds of thousands of expats with access to Freesat found to their dismay that they had no signal for any of BBC’s channels. Current reports suggest this signal loss could be permanent. Popular shows such as Eastenders, Strictly Come Dancing, Dragon’s Den and Top Gear have been lost

to expat viewers, but households in Spain have also been deprived of leading reality shows and soaps such as Coronation Street, the X-Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, which are aired by ITV. The loss is not unique to Spain, and readers across the border in Portugal and as far afield as Sweden and France confirmed the loss of all BBC channels there

hello

Hello readers, welcome to another fun packed edition of “The Weekly Buzz” with so much to write about we really did have trouble fitting it all in. For those who are taking part in Valentines weekend I do hope you have a truly wonderful time. For those who are happily single, unable to share the occasion with a loved one or maybe some who just actually choose not to do anything special then it’s all about doing what you most enjoy at the weekend and yes there is plenty of choice right here in the Costa Blanca. If you have been affected by the changes in the UK TV satellite change over last week and have lost BBC1 then you will probably see again this week there are more changes planned and many of us watching UK TV on a satellite dish may lose ITV channels on Wednesday. There was so much talk about this happening last year and we all thought it was all hyped up and not likely to affect us and now it has happened there are many Brits left without their favourite program’s. Lucky for most of those with a 1.4m dish or larger have not been effected and can carry on as normal. We have included on page 15 the latest information that is available along with the best tips and advice to solve your UK TV issues or you can e mail us on info@vistacostablanca.com for more info. Once again we have a week full of sports as the Winter Olympics gets underway not to mention Premiership football games mid-week and FA cup action at the weekend so to find out more about all of this week’s sport turn to our back pages. For me the highlight of the week is all about another week of fabulous sunshine we have a forecast of mainly sunny days with it getting warmer as the week goes on, so great news for visitors and for me getting out for walks to just enjoy the outdoors.

>>> front page follow

There are reports that you can restore your service by some dish re-alignment but more than likely the majority of people will not have a big enough satellite dish. Reports from France are that a 1m dish is struggling to get signal if any and for southern Spain you will need at least a 1.4m dish or more, Expats are counting the cost of this switchover with prices of bigger dishes and installation at a high with no guarantees of reception, many people in Benidorm live in apartments and having bigger dishes are not a solution. Alix Pryde, Director of BBC Distribution showed little sympathy, saying: “The overspill of the BBC’s services will be reduced so viewers outside the UK will find it even harder to receive them. I know that this causes unhappiness to some of you living outside the UK. However, it is entirely appropriate because the BBC domestic services are for people living in the UK only.” ITV RELEASE STATEMENT ITV have said that their channels will move to Astra 2E between Tuesday & Wednesday. As part of the satellite operator’s on-going renewal programmer, our services will transfer to a new satellite with a tighter beam on Tuesday 11th February. The new satellite footprints have been designed to meet the requirements of broadcasters who distribute their channels in the UK and hold broadcasting rights for the UK but not for other countries. Viewers in the UK will not be affected by the changes. So, what is the solution? It seems that IPTV is the best solution but with many different companies offering the service what do you choose? See Page BLANK for our guide to IPTV.

Benidorm a firm favourite with Liverpool

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

One of Spain's leading hotel groups has revealed that Liverpool is their top city in the UK for holidaymakers after London. MedPlaya.com, which operates hotels in Benidorm and the Costa del Sol, receive thousands of enquires every month about holidays to the popular resorts. In the last three months the hotel chain has also seen enquiries from Liverpool residents rise by almost 70%. MedPlaya.com say they have seen an upsurge in bookings to the resort since series’ six and seven of the popular show Benidorm which were commissioned in April last year. Jan Guile, Marketing and Commercial Manager at MedPlaya.com says: “Benidorm has been a favourite with UK holiday makers since the nineteen seventies. It’s a fantastic resort, full of fun and with a unique charm and identity and offers fantastic value for money. “The show, whilst obviously exaggerated for comedy value, does succeed in capturing the character of the place and the mix of personalities we find on holiday here. We do see a variety of people through the door at MedPlaya.com, from families to single travellers and often groups of friends , but they all have something in common, they’re all seeking of fun in the sun and value for money, and Benidorm certainly delivers." Also in the top five cities for enquiries were Leeds, followed by Newcastle and Sheffield. MedPlaya.com offers a range of hotels including the stunning fourstar Hotel Regente, a favourite with families. Situated in the heart of Benidorm, just minutes away from the Levante Beach, the 195-room hotel has been recently refurbished to offer the highest level of comfort. MedPlaya.com’s full range of two, three and four-star resorts can be booked directly online. Visit www.MedPlaya.com to find a wide range of deals plus activity packages to enhance your stay

All you can eat for 10€ It sounds too good to be true. Well it’s true, how do we know you might ask? Because we went there to find out! It just sounded amazing all you can eat for 10€ at an Argentinian Steak House there was obviously some catch, the trouble was that there really was no catch, except that the offer was for a mixed grill to share served with a choice of Jacket Potato or Chips. The sizzling platter was served in the centre of the table for us to share piled high with Ribs, Steak, Chicken, Sausage and an amazing Black Pudding. We got stuck in and enjoyed every mouthful, half way through I had to mention that I really didn't think that we could order any more food even though it was eat as much as you like..... The portion size for two was amazing but there was no way we were able to ask for more, I had to explain to the waitress that next time I would starve myself before so that I could enjoy a second helping. Well maybe my humour was not understood as she looked at me quite as if I had said something bad, for me it was a compliment and a recommendation because if the food was not good then I wouldn’t plan on going back, however I will return but not to eat as much as I like, it was so good, next time I want to try a full Argentinian steak.

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

After this I had explained that I was from the Weekly Buzz Newspaper and that I was extremely happy with the food, the special offer price was superb value and that the service had been truly impeccable and this was the reason that the restaurant really did deserve a write up. So take it from me and visit them soon whilst this offer lasts. And by the way I nearly forgot to say that as I had heard about this offer listening to VERONICA RADIO 93.4 FM they also gave me a bottle of wine on the house (Free) so tune in to VERONICA and hear it for yourselves! Spanish Princess Awaits Word on Tax Probe

to the door and emerged from the car smiling to television cameras and greeting the waiting press with a cheery “buenos dias”. The princess testified on Saturday that she was unaware of anything questionable about the funds under investigation and that she hadn't been involved in the consultancy's day-to-day activities, said lawyers representing the plaintiffs present at the closed-door deposition.

Hundreds of demonstrators blew whistles, revved motorcycle engines, honked car horns and chanted “Out with the ¬Spanish crown” just 100 yards from the side entrance of the courthouse. The youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos has not been charged with any crime but has been named as a suspect in a pre-trial investigation into whether she illegally used funds from a company she co-owned with her husband, Inaki Urdangarin. The royal couple are accused of diverting money from their Aizoon consultancy firm to pay for a lavish lifestyle, including parties for their four children, foreign trips and renovations of the family’s palatial home in Barcelona. Other company expenses, which were allegedly never declared on the couple’s income taxes, included a £4,000 painting, private salsa lessons and even a set

of Harry Potter books. Former Olympic handball medallist Urdangarin, who was given the title of the Duke of Palma on their marriage in 1997, is separately accused of embezzling up to £5million of public funds from the Noos Institute, a charitable organisation that ran sports events in the Balearic Islands. The Infanta Christina, 48, is the first Spanish royal to be questioned in court since the monarchy was restored in 1975. She was dropped off outside the court in Palma on the island of Majorca by a modest Ford C-Max hatchback. Speculation mounted last week over whether she would walk the 50 yards down an alley to the entrance, which would have taken her past onlookers and pro-republican protests. She was driven straight

"We are very happy with the way things went," said Miquel Roca, one of the princess's lawyers. "She has taken on the questions, without any privilege, just like anybody else would. After long hours of deposition, everybody must be satisfied."

Alcoi - Moors & Cristianos of imagination take us back to the 13th century, to remember the Battle of Alcoy. Streets decked out like the Middle Ages, magnificent processions, exciting mock battles…This is the festival of Moors and Christians: days filled with magic, legend and spectacle. For over four centuries, this festival has recreated the historic clash between two cultures. Come and enjoy this unique festival in which thousands of people take part year after year, all trying to outshine each other in splendour and brilliance.

The metallic structure of the Viaduct of Canalejas, one of the emblems of Alcoy, was quite innovative at the time it was built: the beginning of the 20th century.

The Riquer and Molinar rivers meet in the capital of the region to form the Serpis river. This fact, along with the numerous bridges and industries located by the rivers, and the homogeneous historic quarter, has determined the tourist character of Alcoy. The expansion of the medieval centre forced the creation of bridges, so the new suburbs could grow; this is the reason why nowadays the city is known as "city of bridges".

The square of Plaza de España is the nerve centre of the city. In the medieval quarter we can visit the old City Hall, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Festivities of Moors and Christians. Going on the opposite direction, up San Nicolás street, we will discover the Modernist part of town. The festivities of Moors and Christians, which honour the patron saint San Jorge, are celebrated in Alcoy during the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of April; this "fiesta" is rooted in tradition, and commemorates the historical events of 1276. Music, pomp, and a burst

make up the Moorish and Christian factions march in procession, desperately trying to outshine each others sumptuous costumes. It tends to be one of the most popular and impressive events and in certain cases, such as that of Alcoy, over 5,000 people take part in the procession.

The festival of Moors and Christians is a very old tradition that dates back to the 16th century. It commemorates the confrontation

that took place between Moorish and Christian soldiers in the 13th century over the rule of Spain. The events are held in honour of the city’s patron saint who also played a decisive role in the battle. Thanks to the saint’s sudden and unexpected intervention, victory went to the Christians in spite of their being outnumbered by the Moors. The attraction, grandeur and popular nature of these festivities have caused them to spread to many parts of Spain, although they are especially popular in Valencia and Alicante. There are many variations on these festivities, as each place has its own history and unique elements that set it apart from the rest. The festivals of Alcoy and Villajoyosa stand out for their spectacular nature and both are recognised as being of International Touristic Interest. By taking part in this festive re-enactment, you will have the chance to discover an important piece of Spanish history, at the same time as you enjoy a festival which never fails to outshine that of previous years.

Another part of the festivities are the religious ceremonies held in honour of the city’s patron saint. Yet there are still many more exciting moments awaiting you, such as the spectacular final battle. It follows the so-called “embajadas” (meeting of envoys) in the castle, in which each side reads a text in an attempt to persuade the other side to surrender. Once negotiations have failed, a mock battle ensues in which thousands of kilos of gunpowder is used, ending in victory for the Christians. The final battle also marks the end of the festival and three days of fun, colour and extravagance. But don’t worry, you will be able to enjoy the Moors and Christians again next year in Spain, in an even more spectacular and astonishing festival.

Spectacular participation

The start of the festivities is truly spectacular and well worth seeing: the arrival of both armies in the city. Beginning in the early hours of the morning, the streets, balconies and windows fill with people intent on not missing a single thing. To the accompaniment of music and with all the pomp and majesty you could hope for, the various groups that

What is IPTV? (Internet Protocol Television) Over the last decade, the growth of satellite service, the rise of digital cable, and the birth of HDTV have all left their mark on the television landscape. Now, a new delivery method threatens to shake things up even more powerfully. IPTV has arrived, and backed by the deep pockets of the telecommunications industry, it's poised to offer more interactivity and bring a hefty dose of competition to the business of selling TV. The video channels and programs are delivered to the television sets through a broadband connection, instead of being delivered through the conventional cable or broadcast formats. Many satellite and television installers are discouraging people to go out and buy IPTV, but why? Well it is obvious the more people switching to IPTV, the more it will take a massive effect on their business, not just by 1st time installations but by ongoing services as well including money made on commissions for subscriptions etc. Many satellite installers are starting to wake up and also offer an

IPTV solution after worrying about missing out on the sudden “Gold Rush” since the new Astra Satellite switch over. The truth is each person is different; they live in a different location and have different sized satellite dishes. The further you live south the bigger the issue it will be and for those with dishes smaller than 1.4m the problem looks like it will be permanent but it does depend on location. If you do not have a satellite dish IPTV is definitely an option for you as long as you find the correct provider but remember you do need internet, if you currently have a satellite dish and are currently subscribing to SKY then you may only be missing a number of channels and feel you can cope with online services such as IPLAYER…but for how long. Benidorm and the Costa Blanca are full of high rise apartments which will prove difficult on large dish installations, regardless of your personal situation and viewing capabilities this might be a good time for us all to rethink and take our best option especially if your already paying out for Sky you could save yourself a

load of money but don’t act too fast as most IPTV boxes look all the same on the outside but it’s the overall price you may want to look at, we have included some handy tips to help you decide if IPTV is for you. Which IPTV box should I buy in Spain? This really will come down to your personal preference. There are two different types of packages on offer from IPTV providers in Spain. • Standard Channel List – These providers are offering the channels that have been lost to the change in satellite reception. If you are going to keep a Sky subscription then this is probably your best option as these are the only channels you will need to have your full viewing back again. • Extended Channel List - These providers generally offer some premium channels on top of the standard channel list, such as Sky Sports and Sky Movies. If you don’t have a Sky subscription, or you are thinking about cancelling due to the costs of receiving IPTV in Spain, then this is the best option for you. • Can I self-install IPTV? Yes. Most boxes are plug & play. The only issue you may have is if your TV is not next to your broadband router in which case you will either need to run a network cable from your router to your IPTV Box or you could purchase a power line adaptor kit which will cost around €40, WIFI dongles are also available but not recommended. Lots of people say the power line adaptor is an easier and cheaper way to connect your IPTV box to your router however it’s just a bit messier and can be a whole lot cheaper • What Broadband Speed do I need? Most services recommend a minimum of 2 Mbps; at the minimum but recommend 3Mbps, this is the biggest give away for IPTV boxes not up to a professional standard! • What if it breaks? Make sure whenever you buy electronic equipment it comes with some form of guarantee; most electronic products always come with a minimum 1 year warranty, make sure you are dealing with an official company and there is a long term customer service system in place.

Benidorm Series 6 Hannah - who plays new girl Tonya Dyke in the ITV1 comedy - revealed her exciting news this morning, adding that it has come as a wonderful surprise because she was suffering with fertility problems. During an appearance on Lorraine, Hannah said: “I am [pregnant], which will be a bit of a shock to some of my friends who I’ve not managed to call yet… I’m pregnant! She added: “I don’t mind saying it, I know plenty of women go through it, but they kept telling me that my fertility was so low and that it might not happen. “I just feel massively privileged and blessed. It just feels more important than any other job I’ve ever had. It’s incredible how it hits you suddenly. It’s taken my breath away, I’m so pleased.” Hannah, who made her Benidorm debut this year, had kept her pregnancy a secret as she had been feeling poorly. Thankfully, the early symptoms have passed.

Final Episode features Joan Collins

The former Dynasty star, now 80, doesn’t act a lot these days but she was very keen to do Benidorm. For several years there’s been talk of Joan Collins making a guest appearance We’re now into series six, and it’s easy to look back over the past few years to spot roles that could have been set up for her, had the filming dates suited. In the final episode of Benidorm (ITV 13 February), Joan is playing Crystal Hennessy-Vass, "top dog" of the group that owns the Solana Resort. She turns up at the resort with her chauffeur Elvis, one of many cameos that Derren Litten has had over the years however chain-smoking Crystal is none too pleased Jake Canuso (who plays randy barman Mateo) reveals that Joan Collins’s arrival meant that the street had to

be closed off. We had ten policemen, security guards.” Out of of all the Benidorm regulars, she only features in scenes with Canuso, Sherrie and Tim Healy. Jake loved working with her. “She was great. She’s such a good sport.” Apparently he was a bit wary at first, however. “It’s Joan Collins! At my age you’ve been brought up with her in Dynasty and you think she’s going to be a bitch, but she’s a good sport, very professional, very funny, witty, on it, old school. She tweeted about it and was very excited to be here.” Catch the final episode on the 13th of February on ITV.

STOPPING MOBILITY MADNESS!!

AMIGO 24 - Interview with owner Mario - 6 Feb 2014 an update on the new law AMIGO 24 the providers for Madge’s Scooter BENIDORM TV Series • The Rules • Only people aged 50 years or more are allowed to hire a mobility scooter. • Any disabled person either with a disabled badge • Any Person with physical impairment that can be seen and identified such as an arm or leg in plaster I asked Mario so how do these rules apply to overweight people? Is being overweight a physical impairment or a disability? He said “well without a disabled badge then no, they are not allowed, in extreme circumstances when you can see that the person has difficulty in walking then yes we would be allowed to hire the mobility scooter to

them.” So really there are no rules for people overweight and the argument will be that, who will decide if a person being overweight is allowed or not. One might argue that people should be made to walk as exercise and that it is a good thing and should be encouraged. To stop the hirer who is over 50 years old or disabled allow others to ride the

18

It’s all you need for a great read. mobility scooter will be fined so There should be no borrowing or lending of the scooters and the riding rules include driving the mobility scooter whilst being drunk or under the influence of drugs and this law will allow the Police to remove the mobility scooter to a pound and their would then be a cost for getting it back. There are no rules on the speed that one is allowed to drive at but any wreck-less driving or irresponsible behaviour would allow the Police to issue a fine. Mario has explained that the new laws are very bad for business there will be less people to rent too and that in the last couple of years, Benidorm has seen so many knew mobility hire companies that have allowed young people to hire their scooters and this has led to the huge numbers of complaints because the young people are joy riding, drunk and dangerous to the public. Mario told me that before all the new companies started this there were only isolated incidents and that this situation was in control. He said “I have been in business for 15 years with no problems but things have just gone crazy! It’s just got worse, crazy people, stag and hen groups who are hiring the scooters for fun, people have seen the Benidorm TV series and Benidorm is the place for mobility scooters they are famous and that’s why people think that they will come here and hire a mobility scooter they are everywhere”. By Easter the laws will be in force for Benidorm so the local Police will have a job to do in the monitoring of mobility hire and the control of those who are allowed to rent but are breaking the rules. Someone could then easily rent from outside the area, I asked Mario what would stop someone going to La Cala which is not too far away, renting a mobility scooter and then riding it along the seafront into Benidorm. He replied “as far as I know that would be allowed but I don’t think people will be bothered to do this”. So it remains to be seen if this will happen or not the riding laws would still apply, or companies from outside Benidorm, start doing special deliveries to peoples hotels, as this is a service Amigo 24 provides. As far as we know the on the spot fines will be set at 90€

The Curry Mile Dr Severo Ochoa, Benidorm

“Can’t wait to get back!”

Reviewed 28 January 2014 We were staying in a good all inclusive hotel but we still went here twice in a fortnight, i had to fight the temptation to go a 3rd time. The curry was in a different league to your average curry house and only 9.95 euros for a starter a main course and half a bottle of wine. This is also a clean and friendly establishment , I wouldn’t go anywhere else for a curry if I lived in Benidorm. “Yet another superb meal!” Reviewed 26 January 2014 Visited the Curry Mile last night with our daughter and son-in-law for the second time and had an amazing 9.95 meal. Couldn’t fault a thing. As usual Ronnie was the host with the most and Gill, the perfect waitress. Although the chef keeps to the kitchen (only catch a glimpse of him) feel he should come out and get a round of applause _ definitely the star of the show! Never tasted such good curries in Spain before - this restaurant easily matches the top London Indian restaurants any day! Will return time and time again! Well done guys.

“BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT IN BENIDORM” Reviewed 24 January 2014 The food was superb, service was good and the owner added that personal touch to make the occasion more enjoyable.

“Best curry ever!”

Reviewed 17 January 2014 Went for the 9.95 set menu last night. Didn’t particularly have any preconceived high expectations but wow! How wrong could we be! The food was absolutely first class....good choices....delicious flavours and the waitress was lovely and friendly. The owner was soooo warm and welcoming and accommodated our every need. He is So nice that you feel you want to keep going back to support him and see him succeed in growing the business. rer De La Palma 17, Benidorm

“Very good carvery”

“Great night out”

“Best meal in benidorm”

“Great value for money. brilliant entertainment”

Reviewed 27 January 2014 Been here a coupe of times and found it great value for money - veggys always fresh and loads of meat chocolate brownie was one of the best ive ever eaten - very clean and good service - highly recommened Reviewed 17 December 2013 We went monroes at least 5 times over our holiday. The chicken pie was to die for and the carvery always hot and fresh. We loved it and the staff are lovely and helpful, always smiling.

“Three visits”

Reviewed 13 December 2013 Had 3 superb meals at Monroe’s. Two were carvery’s & we went for the steak special. The carvery was always fresh and hot & the steak was the best cooked steak I have had in a long time.

“Best value for money in Benidorm. ”

Reviewed 26 October 2013 U can’t believe the value for money. E4.95 one course, 6.95 two courses. Full roast bead and/or pork. Yorkshire puds and carvery veg i.e. Help yourself to as much as you like. Fresh carrots, cabbage etc. Benidorm is often known for fried breakfasts, fired chicken etc. This was real fresh veg and lovely meat! I had the cod I parsley sauce last night and apart from occasional bone, it was fantastic.

“Excellent once again!”

Having been away to the UK for the summer we were pleased to see that Monroes Benidorm is once again back to thier normal menú after a summer break. The food was excellent, we chose the 3 course menú which includes a drink and a whole bt. of wine to take away each! The carvery was our choice for the main course and again up to its usual standard, lovely and hot on piping hot plates, the beef was delicious as were all the fresh veg and thier always great Yorkshire puddings.

Reviewed 4 February 2014 Great show and a fantastic night out. get there early for a better view but all in all most seats tend to have a decent view.

Reviewed 3 February 2014 The show was excellent, much of it was traditional Spanish dancing, but it was also very diverse, with a Michael Jackson, Riverdance tribute. There was also a juggler who was very original and entertaining. Dancers were entering the huge stage on flying peacocks or down staircases which suddenly appeared. An amazing routine with lasers was stunning and most peoples’ favourite was the slow motion acrobatics by three men to brilliant music. The lighting and stage effects were captivating. For smokers there is a large smoking area with an unrivalled view of the show, but this is very poorly ventilated and is very stuffy, though some people were sat there for the entire evening. To my surprise and delight the drinks were reasonably priced at 3 or 4 Euros. We didn’t eat but the food looked and smelled nice and was well presented.

“Party of 14 for a big birthday”

Reviewed 22 January 2014 The atmosphere was really good as we sat down for pre-dinner drinks...which were not expensive! Wine was included in the price of the meal and show (€42) and we all agreed the food was excellent, 4 courses to include smoked salmon and fillet steak cooked to perfection! The show was something else, fantastic acts from comedy to dance and magic! When it came to what we thought was the end it was announced there would be a second half after a short interval. Could not have faulted anything, excellent evening, excellent food, excellent atmosphere, definitely a must for anyone visiting Benidorm, we will be going again!

Winter Skin Care Tips

For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling: They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema (in which the skin becomes inflamed). 1. Seek a Specialist If you go to your local drugstore, you'll be hard put to find a salesperson who can give you good advice. That's why going to an esthetician or dermatologist even once is a good investment. Such a specialist can analyze your skin type, troubleshoot your current skin care regimen, and give you advice on the skin care products you should be using. But that doesn't mean you'll be stuck buying high-end products. "Inexpensive products work just as well as high-end ones," says David Voron, MD, a dermatologist in Arcadia, Calif. "In fact, the extra price you pay for the expensive stuff is often just for packaging and marketing. What's most important is how your skin responds to the product -- and how you like its feel, not how much money you paid for it." Hydrate for Your Health, Not for Your Skin. 2. DRINK WATER If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking. In fact, it’s a myth. Water is good for your overall health and “the skin of someone who is severely dehydrated will benefit from fluids. But the average person’s

skin does not reflect the amount of water being drunk,” Kenneth Bielinski, MD, a dermatologist in Oak Lawn, Ill., tells WebMD “It’s a very common misconception.” LaPlante agrees. “I see clients at the spa who drink their 10 to 12 glasses of water a day and still have superdry skin. It just doesn’t do that much.” But choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face. Instead, look for "nonclogging" oils, like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil -- or butter -- is controversial, because it can clog facial pores. And vegetable shortening, LaPlante says, is a really bad idea. "It would just sit on the skin," she says. "And it would be really greasy." You can also look for lotions containing "humectants," a class of substances (including glycerine, sorbitol, and alphahydroxy acids) that attract moisture to your skin. 3. Slather on the Sunscreen No, sunscreen isn't just for summertime. Winter sun -- combined with snow glare -- can still damage your skin. Try applying a broadspectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they're exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

ASK the Optician:

The link between smoking and sight loss Jorge Martinez de Lizarduy Araico, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Benidorm

Q: I have relied on glasses for years and want to try contact lenses, but am worried I might not be able to wear them. What do you recommend? A: Soft contact lenses are the most popular type, as they are very pliable therefore easy to get used to and comfortable to wear. They cannot be dislodged very easily from the eye and they give excellent all round vision. Your optician will show you how to insert and remove them, which is easy once you know how. Q: I want to try contact lenses for the first time. What different types are available? A: You can choose from daily disposable lenses which you throw away every day, or monthly disposable lenses which last a month but need to be cleaned and stored in solution overnight. Now there are even all day-all night lenses you can sleep in. Q: Why is the prescription for my contact lenses different to the one for my glasses? A: Contact lenses float on the surface of the eye, but glasses lenses are several millimetres further away, these few millimetres can make a difference to the lens strength needed. At Specsavers you can currently try contact lenses for free, for more information visit www.specsavers.es or by calling your local store on 965 835 367

It’s all you need for a great read.

For the love of a dog Yes it’s the week to celebrate St Valentine’s Day, the patron of love. So give one of our harder to home dogs, the gift of love and you could be surprised at the results. It’s been a funny journey for me, coming to Benidorm area not knowing any one and for the first time in my life all I had to do was ‘nothing!’ Yet time started to drag and I began to wonder if there was something I could do, that could help the place I had come to live. Looking through this paper I noticed an article about bedding being needed for a dogs home and having lots to spare I went along to donate. I was not a dog lover but this was the start of getting fit, making friends and finding love in an unexpected place. I’m fitter now than for quite some time and I’ve seen amazing changes in other volunteers too. With all this exercise and fresh air my sleep is better to as I can rest knowing that a dog is in better care just from the 20 minute walk and short cuddle that I have given. That dog is now much more likely to find a home when you walk through the doors looking for a best friend. Finding friends has been easy. We all share the same values of the good and simple things in life and in such a short time I have had help and support from them too. Love in an unexpected place, yes! Not a partner but a feeling of connecting again as the dogs recognise you, the tails wag, the ears bob up and down and the deep ‘woof’ of appreciation and expectation comes from them It really is love in an unexpected way, I’m fitter and sleep better, yes with all that exercise and fresh air then I have lost

weight, a dress size! I sleep well at night knowing that the dogs have had a great walk and some love and attention. Benidorm dog pound is a very basic place for the animals in their care. They have wooden pallets for beds and slops from Benidorm Hotels for food. Could you adopt one, foster one or become a regular dog walker? To find out more checkout the Facebook page Benidorm Dog Homing and ask to join as a member to share in our work or call our English speaking volunteer Maria on 0034 677 373 393. Gill Brookshaw, Life performance and Business Coach at www.recoveringme.co.uk Dog of the week Beni! Beni, A big teddy bear with his soft fur and a love for having his ears and neck scratched. He has been in Benidorm for about a year and yet is still house trained to refuse to use his home as a toilet! Seeing those ears bounce as he has a run is a wonderful sight that makes us all smile. Please give him a home as he is going grey before his time with being in the pound.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

On Monday and Tuesday your mind seems divided. Mostly you have differing thoughts about your time and the pace at which you’re moving. Should you slow your goal trajectory a bit? Should you accelerate it? Are you walking too quickly when you could be enjoying the stroll? On Wednesday and Thursday, you’re not really bothered by such questions, mostly because you’re so intensely happy. Nothing seems to bother you at all. But on Friday and Saturday, a few minor financial frustrations underscore a certain level of crankiness.

CANCER

What’s your gut feeling? Your instincts can make short work of any uncertainty at the beginning of the week, if you just tune into that inner voice. The stars favor whatever moves you decide to make. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, though, you may be inclined to act on impulse when it’s a better idea to think the implications through. What you do now could have long-lasting effects. You’re industrious this weekend, but you’re also adept at communicating and connecting, so make sure you get out and about!

LIBRA

Adapting to changing circumstances is key as the week begins. Have your contingency plan at the ready, and actively seek out others’ input, both professionally and in your personal life. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, others are likely looking to you for your expertise or just your wise perspective. Help them see the bigger picture rather than just issuing your opinion. When it comes to the weekend, you’ll want to mix it up - meeting new people and getting stuff done, balanced with some time well spent doing nothing at all.

CAPRICORN

Are you feeling social or are you zeroed in on one person at the beginning of the week? Follow your mood and keep your options open. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, you may want to be in charge, but there’s a limit to how much you can control. Changing how others are is highly unlikely; understanding them, much easier. Ask questions of the open-ended variety. You’re a master planner from Friday afternoon through the weekend, with a stunning command of the details and facts at your disposal. Accomplishments of all sorts are a cinch.

TAURUS

A special dining experience at the beginning of the week with a friend or a loved one (or a potential loved one!) is an excellent idea. Making it yourself makes it extra charming. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, you may have some issues with authority. Remember to show proper respect-even if you’re not feeling it-or be prepared to deal with the consequences. Good times are coming your way if the stars have their say from Friday afternoon through the weekend; you may especially enjoy nature now, and romance is in the air.

LEO

Objectivity isn’t your strong suit as the week begins, but your emotional responses tell their own tales - ones that are just as valuable as logic. Exploring your feelings takes you important places now. Then from Wednesday through the end of the workweek, the stars are sending inspiration, excitement and pure radiance your way. The spotlight’s on you - be ready to shine, at work and at play (and particularly when it comes to affairs of the heart!). When the weekend comes, you may be ready for some downtime, perhaps because you’ve got something to mull over.

SCORPIO

You’ve got both the brains and the brawn at the beginning of the week - the big ideas and the drive to see them through. Be sure to allow for circumstances beyond your control, though. Expect some tension between you and a certain someone between Wednesday and the end of the workweek. Make a real effort to see it from their point of view; start by asking them more about why they feel the way they do. From Friday afternoon through the weekend, fostering friendships and making future plans are favored - combine the two for extra fun.

AQUARIUS

Feeling out of sorts at the beginning of the week? Don’t overlook the physical part of the equation; a little extra exercise can get your mind and body much more in balance. Suddenly a problem doesn’t seem so monumental. And you’ve got the creativity to find multiple solutions to all sorts of issues from Wednesday through the end of the workweek. Set fixed ideas aside and find flexible, workable options all around. This weekend, you’re extra grounded and extra perceptive. A realization about someone you know may change your point of view.

GEMINI

You’ll put up a fight for what you want at the beginning of the week. Make your case logically, and don’t sully it with extra little quibbles. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, it’s more about brainstorming with others than it is about ideas that are in conflict. Collaborating’s fun now, and the concepts you come up with can become very sweet in reality. The weekend’s perfect for concrete accomplishments, and crossing things off your to-do list is extra satisfying. Admittedly sometimes you’re all talk, but not right now.

VIRGO

You’re a people-person as the week begins. Working in groups is fun (and for once it’s actually more productive than just doing it yourself!), and socializing’s favored now too, even if it’s just mellow hanging-out time. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, you may feel like you’re at a disadvantage of some sort, but you’ve got what it takes - or if not, you can figure it out quickly. Expect everything to get much easier starting around Friday afternoon and lasting through the weekend. These are some of the best days you’ve seen in a long time -how will you use this great energy?

SAGITTARIUS

You and a certain someone may not see things the same way at the beginning of the week, but sorting out why doesn’t have to involve a big conflict. Gain understanding, and consider agreeing to disagree. From Wednesday through the end of the workweek, an infusion of confidence and high spirits is your gift from the stars. Your job? Use it to explore your world - professionally, personally, even romantically. By the weekend, though, your challenge is to look at what’s already close to you, and look at it closely.

PISCES

You’re a real inspiration at the beginning of the week - and you may be inspiring someone in a romantic fashion. Sharing your own feelings when it comes to matters of the heart is favored now - will you spill ‘em? Then from Wednesday through the end of the workweek, watch out for getting entangled in issues that aren’t actually any of your business. Be neutral, especially in the work environment - it’s safest now. This weekend, offering a helping hand makes you look like a million bucks, particularly if others are only offering criticism.

Slapped cheek disease, otherwise known as fifth disease or erythema infectiosum, is an infection caused by the parvovirus B19 virus. It most commonly occurs in children aged 4-12 years, but anyone can be affected. Some people, especially adults, have few or no symptoms. The infectious period is for 4-20 days before the rash appears Normally the rash looks like a bright red scald on one or both cheeks. It looks as if the cheek(s) have been slapped. Sometimes there are just a blotchy red patches on the face. The rash is painless. Sometimes a faint rash will also appear on the body, arms, and legs. Occasionally, the rash on the face and body comes and goes for up to four weeks. It is more usual for the rash to disappear within a few days. Although the rash can look quite dramatic, the illness itself is usually mild. You may have a headache or mild temperature for a few days before the rash appears. Occasionally, mild pain and stiffness develop in one or more joints for a few days. This is more common in adults than children.

The illness may become more serious : • In children with some types of hereditary anaemia such as sickle cell disease, betathalassaemia and hereditary spherocytosis. This virus can cause these types of anaemia to become suddenly much worse. • In people with a weakened immune system. If you have leukaemia or cancer, have had an organ transplant or have HIV infection then you may develop a more serious illness with this infection. • In pregnant women. Most pregnant women are immune to this virus, or will not be seriously affected if they become infected by it. However, like some other viruses, the virus that causes slapped cheek disease can sometimes harm an unborn child. Miscarriage is more common in women who are infected with this virus before 20 weeks of pregnancy. Therefore, if you are pregnant, keep away from people who have slapped cheek disease. If you are pregnant and have been in contact with a person with the virus then your doctor may arrange for you to have a blood test.

Easybreath snorkeling mask

One basic problem with snorkel masks for underwater adventures is the comfort level while wearing it and the awkward breathing method through your mouth. It just doesn’t feel natural with your nose closed and taking air through your mouth. Also there are many other problems with snorkel masks like water entering into the mask itself and creating a panic for a novice diver or the natural instinct of breathing through the nose creating fog in the mask rendering visibility to zero. This was a challenge for designers at Tribord to come up with a unique design that would not require the diver to breathe through the mouth and also eliminated any chance of fog being created. And hence came to life the an

award winning (2014 Oxylane Innovation Awards)Easybreath snorkeling mask that is a full-face snorkeling mask which allows you to breathe naturally underwater, just as you would do when out of water. Easybreath snorkeling mask makes it possible with double air-flow system that keeps out all the condensation that can be produced on the mask itself. Made from silicone skirt and polypropylene rim, the mask has a full 180 degree field of vision that keeps the diver aware of what’s happening around him/her. To ensure that water doesn’t enter from top of the snorkel, a dry top mechanism is plugged-in making it ultra-safe for first time divers or people who are skeptical

about the traditional snorkel masks. Easybreath snorkeling mask is one of its kind in the world and looks good to become an integral part of underwater diver’s kit simply because of the ease of use. You breathe in naturally and breathe out in the same way as you would do by instinct. Tribord Easybreath weighs only 550 grams and comes in a plethora of color options like blue, translucent purple or translucent atoll. The price tag of €39.95 is also completely justified considering the ease of underwater snorkeling it permits unlike other snorkeling masks that require you to breathe in a very unnatural way. Six Nations 2014 Weekend Review

England shut Scotland out to claim Calcutta Cup Scotland 0 England 20: England successfully handled an appalling Murrayfield pitch to complete a comfortable Six Nations victory over Scotland that was founded on efficiency. One week after losing to France in agonising circumstances, Stuart Lancaster’s side reestablished their title credentials with an easy rout of potentially awkward but ultimately feeble opposition. Luther Burrell celebrated his second cap with his second international try, once again looking at home in the Test arena, and he was followed over the whitewash by man of the match Mike Brown. Owen Farrell converted both tries and added a

penalty, while his halfback partner Danny Care kicked a drop goal. Englands next game is at Twickenham against Ireland on Saturday 22nd Febuary while Scotland face Italy on the same day away at the Stadio Olimpico.

Ireland has a sniff of its first Six Nations rugby title in five years after humbling defending champion Wales 26-3 at Lansdowne Road on Saturday. Ireland scored the game's only two tries from superb rolling mauls while Jonathan Sexton kicked four penalties, his only miss from beyond halfway. By contrast, Wales' only shot in anger was a second-half try disallowed, while Ireland's superior discipline gave Leigh Halfpenny only one penalty kick, nearly an hour in. Wales, trying to become the first team to win the championship three successive times outright, promised to be direct and physical but was overwhelmed by a swarming defense and forced into multiple errors; 15 penalties and two free kicks, 16 missed tackles, 10 turnovers, two chargedowns. Wales paid for it with a first away loss in the championship since 2011, when it also last failed to score a try. Coach Warren Gatland, following Wales' biggest Six Nations defeat in his seven-year tenure, called it his lowest moment. "We won't be thinking in terms of retaining the Six Nations, we'll be thinking about improving for our next game against France,'' he said. The 13-0 halftime score fairly reflected Ireland's control. Cristiano Ronaldo Red Card Ref Suspended For A Month

The ref who handed out the red card to Cristiano Ronaldo during Real Madrid’s match against Athletic Bilbao has received a suspension of his own; he will be out for a whole month. The controversial call had many questioning if the Ballon d’Or winner’s actions warranted such a harsh measure, especially in light of videos reviewing the incident which show the Bilbao player was trying to instigate. It wouldn’t be the first time, nor the last,

that opposing teams try to provoke the hot-blooded Portuguese star into committing a foul for which he could be ejected. In the case of Cristiano Ronaldo’s altercation with Bilbao players Carlos Gurpegui and Ander Iturraspe, the ref clearly overreacted and slapped the Real striker with the red card. Spanish radio station Cadena Cope reports that Spain’s refereeing technical committee has suspended Miguel Ángel Ayza Gámez for a month in the wake of his performance in the match. Additionally, Ayza Gámez will not be called to any further Real Madrid matches this season and is in danger of being relegated from the list of La Liga match officials. If Real Madrid Team Manager Carlo Ancelotti had any hopes that his star player’s suspension would be lifted, he was in for a disappointment as it didn’t make any difference in the team’s quest to reinstate Cristiano Ronaldo. The Spanish football association (RFEF) ruled on Friday that due to the insulting gesture by Ronaldo, the three-game suspension stands.

Sochi 2014: Jenny Jones wins historic British slope style bronze

Snowboarder Jenny Jones made history in Sochi on Sunday by winning slopestyle bronze - Great Britain’s first medal on snow in the history of the Winter Olympics. Jones, 33, held the lead after scoring 87.25 points in her second run and had an agonising wait while 10 athletes tried to better her score. American Jamie Anderson eventually took gold with 95.25, ahead of Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi on 92.50. “I did the best run I could have done,” said Jones ones scored 73.00 to place fifth after the first round, just 4.25 points off the podium places, and after an impressive second run she secured the bronze when the final competitor, Austrian medal prospect Anna Gasser, fell. “It feels amazing,” added Jones. “I cannot believe it, I just can’t believe it. I knew I was going to drop [from first place] but I didn’t know how far. I am just so happy. “It was so difficult waiting. I thought I did my best run and landed it as best as I could.” Jones, from Bristol, becomes the first Briton to win a medal at a Winter Games on snow rather than

Liverpool tear Arsenal Apart

Liverpool made a mockery of Arsenal’s status as Premier League leaders by handing out an emphatic beating at Anfield. Two goals apiece from Martin Skrtel and Raheem Sterling, and another composed finish from Daniel Sturridge, handed Liverpool a 5-1 trouncing however the result still did not reflect Liverpools dominance with Suarez hitting the woodwork with a superb volley from outside the box, Sturridge missing a reletavly easy chip and many more close chances.

bad week

City still struggling

Presented with an opportunity to go back to the top of the Barclays Premier League following Liverpool’s demolition of Arsenal earlier in the day, Manchester City were frustrated, being shut out by Norwich and forced instead to settle for a point. Coupled with a Chelsea win at home to Newcastle, the result saw City drop to the third with Chelsea the new leaders having engineered a five-point swing on City over the past week.

Man Utd draw with Fulham was a new low, says David Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes saidconceding an injury-time equaliser to Fulham was "as bad as it gets" after his side failed to win for the 13th time in 25 league games this season. United are now nine points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the chase for a Champions League place. The Red Devils had 21 more points after 25 Premier League games last season. United boss Moyes said: "It's been a bit like that

this season. [Sunday] was as bad as it gets. We dominated." The hosts had 75% of possession and sent in 81 crosses, the most by a Premier League team since 2006. Despite dominating against the top flight's bottom side, that had lost its previous four league games, United could not hold on to their lead. Moyes's side have now lost 10 matches overall this season, five at home, and won just three of their nine games in 2014. Moyes, who said his players were "hurting", added: "There was only one winner in the game, and that was Manchester United. "I don't know if we could have done an awful lot more. Maybe we could have defended a couple of times a bit better, taken a few more of the chances we made, but we completely dominated and we should have won the game." Moyes, who took over from Sir Alex Ferguson last summer, saw his side recover from Steve Sidwell's opener as Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick scored to put United 2-1 up with 10 minutes left. But Darren Bent's header in the 94th-minute led to boos from some home fans at the final whistle. "Being one down was bad enough. The amount of attempts, chances and play we had was unbelievable. How we didn't win I have no idea," Moyes added. "It's goals that count. You can have as much possession as you like. We should have scored more. You've got to try and keep making it work. The players tried that and eventually the goals did come and I was more disappointed we didn't make it 3-1.
