British expats can currently still vote for 15 years, with their votes counted in their old constituency. Hello readers, Under the Lib Dem plans, expected to be approved After writing to you last week and mentioning the weather at the Spring party conference, MPs would provide I said it was to be sunny and warm but i started to worry a expats with a voice back in the UK. little as the clouds and rain set in on Tuesday. Seeing such Many European countries already have a system like wonderful sunshine and higher temperatures after a bit of this in place. France, for example, has six seats spread mugginess was exactly what I had hoped for. Today I’m sitting on the terrace in the warm heat of the sun across Europe, two in Africa, two in America and one in and apart from a little breeze it is really pleasant. Yesterday Asia. The plans, titled Power to the People, also include was the first day for a while I didn’t need to take out a jacket lowering the voting age to 16, a special seat for the and was more than comfortable in a polo shirt. House of Commons speaker and allowing two people Again in the UK it’s been a week of rain, high winds and more floods not at all nice for our friends and families. We are spoilt and extremely lucky to be able to enjoy the outdoors and fresh air here; it makes me feel great to sit at home with open windows and doors allowing the breeze of fresh clean air to circulate around the house. With Valentine’s day past I hope you had a wonderful weekend, if you went out for a meal I would love to hear about it so please take a few moments to send me an email marco@vistacostablanca.com We can now look ahead to Carnival and Fiestas taking place very soon, March will be here before we know it with only 10 days left of February and with such a busy month ahead for us Brits with our own events and celebrations but we also can take part in the Spanish events starting on Saturday 1st March Carnival and continuing with Fire Fiestas from 15th. Not to mention St Patricks Day and Spanish Father’s Day…we will be worn out before Easter!! I have been out and about again this last week meeting some fantastic people; this included some of the group and organisers of The Royal British Legion at the “Why Not Bar” it was an informal meeting, drinks and quiz, I also I met up with Anne and Pam the official fund raisers and collectors of the EMAUS Children’s charity. They helped me piece together some of the history of Benidorm from the 70’s and 80’s discussing the original fiestas, Moors and Christians and also some of the fund raising activities from around the region telling me about some very special people who have been behind the events and ideas over the years. Talking to these wonderful ladies is always so interesting and such a pleasure. This week’s feature I have written is about a couple of special people who Anne and Pam have had so much help and support from so please take your time to have a read on page 11.about Claire and Ivan from the Original Benidorm Joke Shop. Sports highlights this last week have been both the FA cup weekend as well as the Winter Olympics a weekend full of action and amazing skiing and snowboarding skills. GB has 2 medals whilst Spain have been in search for their first, there is just one week left before the closing ceremony so to find out more about all of this week’s sport turn to our back pages. For me this week’s highlight is all about food and the local Gastronomy events, I will be going to visit some of the local restaurants to make my reviews and enjoy the experiences that they have to offer. The event details are listed on page 6.

The idea is expected to be on the agenda for the Lib Dems’ spring conference scheduled for next month in York, and the timing means that it could be included in the party’s manifesto ahead of the UK General Election in 2015.

A few quick tax tips Non–Residents It’s that time of year again when we are supposed to make a declaration to the tax office. The whole mess of taxes can be confusing with regular changes and updates to a system of bureaucracy which is complicated already. But as Oscar Wilde famously said “these cannot be avoided” (usually). We get a lot of enquiries about who should declare their assets in Spain and what about those who live here but receive their income or pensions in Britain. Tax matters such as wills and inheritance are very much based on an individual basis but if you are not a tax resident of Spain but own a property in your name here, you should pay a tax annually. As this property is considered a second home, it is considered therefore as a “luxury asset”. Here are a few quick tax facts which will hopefully clarify the situation as it relates to you. •HOW MUCH DO I PAY? The amount you pay is based on the ratable value of your home as calculated on your “SUMA” bill. • WHEN SHOULD I PAY THIS? You can make this declaration anytime throughout the year and corresponds to the previous calendar year. • WHY SHOULD I PAY THIS? Well, apart from the fact that it is the law, the payment of this tax is particularly important when planning to sell your home as these are tax benefits on the sale if you are up to date. Also, if you do not make this payment voluntarily each year and the tax office write to you they can reclaim up to 5 years previously with compound interest. There is a second “wealth tax” which they charged on the potential rental income from the property many on the local gossip vine claim that this has been abolished, in fact it still exists but the rate is currently set at zero so it can be brought back in the future. Next week we will discuss the recent law brought in 2013 regarding declaring offshore assets to the Spanish tax authorities.

Respect the Spanish Hunting Dogs Rally to support hunting dogs on Sun 23 Feb in Benidorm. Across Spain on Sunday 23rd February there will be marches to show that hunting dogs deserve to be a part of your family. They are not just working dogs that can then be abandoned after their working life but loyal and loving pets. Walks have been confirmed down the main streets of many Spanish cities from Bilao to Barcelona and Pamplona. Benidorm is joining in by having its own walk at the same time as all the other cities to show support for these wonderful animals. The event is to show people that these dogs are much more than a dog of work but that they

make wonderful pets because of their calm and trusting nature. We are asking that all dogs wear an emblem of an orange scarf, handkerchief or coat. It’s not a protest but more a demonstration of support for these marvellous dogs and at the end of the walk a short informative reading will be made. If you can come along and show your support for these breeds of dogs then we are hoping that more walks will happen and respect will be given and attitudes changed for the Spanish hunting dogs. Join the march at Paseo De Poniente on Sunday 23 February at Noon people will be dressed in orange, definitely a way to get noticed!

More Improvements at the indoor market

Howard Stirrup, Vice President of the community of the Indoor Market and founder of British Benidorm has taken the initiative and time to look at what was most needed to improve the market for its visitors. He has worked endlessly while and thought of new ideas and ways of generating money that can be spent on maintenance and improvements making the market more visitor friendly and a place to visit safe and secure. This weekend hand rails were installed, a simple addition which might not seem that important to some but what a fantastic investment, it will help the access for elderly and disabled visitors who make up a high percentage of visitors and residents here in Benidorm. It wasn't long before we saw them being used and could see how important they are for people.

It makes you think how people have coped beforehand and how no one else had thought of this before with so many people struggling to walk up and down the steps. The new addition has already influenced the much needed plan for a new handrail for the staircase which leads down to the toilets and people have already commented on the fact hand rails should have been a necessity from the beginning and his tremendous hard work is not going unnoticed. The funds have been gathered for these additions from funds generated by new advertising boards as they don’t come cheap (2200 €) with more are to be added to cover all 3 entrances. Howard has also invested funds into brand new benches with hope for more, perfect for people who wish to take a break, have a snack or read the paper. The list goes on how he has managed to get so much done in the time he has been vice president is unbelievable with information leaflets, security signs, numbering of aisles, mobility scooter designated parking and more already complete or on the agenda. There are future plans to install much needed air conditioning in the market but unfortunately Howard will not be able to see

this project through as he has decided to resign for at least the next term so he does not burn himself out as focus on his business “Just Denise Curtains” as well as working for the needs of British Benidorm.

food & drink MONROES MONROES CARVERY HAPPY MONDAYS Benidorm PIE NIGHT

Monroes in Benidorm is famous for being the number one British Carvery Restaurant, well now they are boasting to be Number One for their home baked Pies. Pie and Mash has always been one of my favourite British dishes and i couldn't wait to go along to see what Heidi and Lauren had to offer. The carvery section is laid out with a hot counter with a full choice of vegetables, mash and roast potatoes, as well as wonderful thick gravy, they also offer a choice of chips peas and gravy but I like my mash too much! The huge pies on display were fresh baked and served onto the hot counter. Round and standing tall each pie offered a different filling. My choice was one of my favourites "Steak and Ale" there was also Chicken, Ham and Leek which looked also looked very tempting. Lauren sliced and served what I thought was a generous portion that looked amazing and, I helped myself to

the vegetables, mash and gravy. The filling was not only tasty and juicy but the steak was tender and soft there were no fatty bits and it was covered in a perfectly cooked short crust pastry the meal was absolutely fab. I did actually eat everything that was on my plate, this wasn't as easy as you might think given how tasty the food was but because you can serve yourself the vegetables and potatoes it’s easy to put a little too much on your plate. My excuse is that the serving spoons are very large…no wonder I couldn't manage a dessert! Pie Night is on every Monday at Monroe’s Restaurant and cost only 6.50€ including a dessert or 5.25€ for the main course only. WANT TO ENTERTAIN?

THEN VISIT THE ORIGINAL BENIDORM JOKE SHOP move premises. After finding a new location it was only a short time before they needed to expand so they took over the shop next door, their stock of fancy dress was growing massively year on year and they just didn’t have room for it all along with hundreds of accessories. After 18 years later they are still going strong providing fantastic props and costumes along with exceptional customer service. The Benidorm Series have recognised The Benidorm Joke Shop as their official supplier for props and accessories

Find a massive selection of entertainment props, jokes and fancy dress costumes to hire or buy at the "Original Benidorm Joke Shop". THE ORIGINAL BENIDORM JOKE SHOP The Original Benidorm Joke Shop was once situated in the Avenida Meditteraneo in a place that was called Las Terrerzas and for over 15 years Claire and Ivan were serving their range of imported goods to the residents and visitors of Benidorm. They opened the first shop in 1981, the original idea to open a Joke Shop abroad they set their sights on opening in Ibiza but due to the fact there was no direct flights they changed to Benidorm. We asked why Benidorm? Claire and Ivan told me “Well it came from nowhere really, Benidorm just happened to be a place that we decided would be as good as anywhere else.” "We came and found a local and then it took us 18 months to open" to open a shop you needed the goods to sell of course so Claire and Ivan decided to Import loads of stuff from UK little did they know at the time what a nightmare this exercise would be! The stock arrived but it was held by the authorities. This was because the weight that was declared in Manchester was different from the weight in Alicante, the authorities deemed this as smuggling and their entire stockpile was inaccessible, this was only the start of the problems because also all the rubber goods that were made in China were not allowed into the country and had to be sent back. All goods from China were banned in Spain so at this time there was going to be extremely difficult in getting a range of products in to sell. This is a significant contrast to today's outlook of selling goods made in China, I suppose we could say the complete opposite and that now we find it hard to find products that are not made in China!! For Claire and Ivan there was so much rigmarole with opening the business and even though they had no immediate need to employ anyone else the law said you

had to employ a Spanish person to open the business, whether you could afford to employ someone or not that was the law. With one thing and another problems were there to overcome and the first ever Benidorm Joke Shop was opened. From 1983 the business had an influx of new customers from the 18-30's groups that visited in there hundreds, the groups had theme nights each week and this was the main business back then. Claire explained also that Easter time was full of Portuguese school trips the kids were aged from 14 to 18 and came for long weekends; they liked to buy things like whoopee cushions, cigarette bangers, false skin and blue chewy sweets that turn your mouth completely blue, these are just a few of the favourites the children liked to buy however the Portuguese children were causing a lot of problems stealing, vandalising property and other things around Benidorm so eventually after so many complaints the trips were stopped. After a few years the Russians started coming on holiday and they loved to visit the shop and buy jokes and tricks they also enjoyed bartering on the price on each and every sale which can be tough when they already offer such fantastic value but the Russians were helping with trade and were an important part of the Benidorm tourism. Then the Benidorm Fiestas started to help sales, it was the Bees organisation for Entertainment in Benidorm who started the English Fiestas and Dany Carr and Jason Kaine from Cafe Benidorm supported the Children from Emaus with donations taken during the fiestas from the swear box and other collections. Each year the Bees made a show for the Children at the Fiestas every year until they stopped allowing the Children to visit. In 1996 the shop had to be closed because the building was condemned due to diseases in the bricks and with only one weeks’ notice you could be evicted so the decision was to

El Campello

El Campello is a delightful holiday resort situated in a perfect position on the Costa Blanca coast of Alicante. This is a town that has resisted the lure of mass tourism and with its unpretentious air; this resort is perfect for both couples and families alike. Its natural surroundings and kilometres of beaches and coves make this an ideal destination for a range of sports .El Campello is about 14 kilometres from Alicante. Situated in the heart of the Costa Blanca, it has 23 kilometres of coastline with beautiful beaches offering a landscape of contrasts. Along with broad, sandy beaches such as Muchavista, there are also cliffs and small coves, such as those of La Coveta Fuma or La Venta La Nuza. Its crystal clear waters and excellent year-round weather make this an ideal place for water sports such as sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing. In fact, El Campello has a Marina and a Sailing Club. Hiking and cycling routes in the surrounding mountains are other activities available here. In one of these mountains you will find the Canalobre

Caves, of great speleological interest. During Easter week, the Naucotur fair is held here - it focuses on sailing, trade and tourism. It is also well worth going to the fish auction held every afternoon of the year, Monday-Friday, at the Market on the Port. Lying between Alicante City (13km) and the busy resort of Benidorm (26km) it offers a history and a charm all of its own. With miles of wide sandy white beach, a pretty fishing harbour, views of the mountains and a wide selection of friendly eateries and bars, you can have all the advantages of a small, peaceful, relaxing resort but with the vibrancy of Alicante City and Benidorm within easy reach. El Campello has a proud history giving the town a unique feel. Around the port area archaeological remains of circular cabins dating back to 3000BC have been found and the little fishing harbour with its adjoining mariner are overlooked by a 16th century watchtower that acted as a warning against raids from Berber Pirates. In the present day tourism is the town’s main draw and no wonder! Dominating the resort is the blue, sun-kissed Mediterranean backed by a broad, pearl white beach stretching for miles. But the real difference is that the town planners have carefully considered the impact tourism could have and made sure that the individuality of El Campello is maintained. There are excellent beach facilities, as you would expect and a large number of good qualityrestaurants and café bars that spill out on the modern promenade that sweeps around the coast. However in El Campello you will also find families still living in tiny seafront houses painted in bright colours, that once were homes to fishermen. And as an example of the town’s character it still holds a bustling weekly fish market, which the local restauranteurs take full advantage of! There are few high-rise buildings, the town preferring to offer smaller, friendlier but no less equipped establishments as tourist accommodation. This makes it a more relaxing environment in which to take a holiday.

the population until the 1940s, was an island. The place shows signs of occupation from the late third millennium BC . In times roman on the Iberian prehistoric ruins and a farming village that had small thermal baths are raised. From this period are rafts, connected to the sea, where they were reared fish, these constructions give the name of the Baños de la Reina to the area of the reservoir, because according to the popular imagination were the bathrooms of hopscotch.

From the Middle Ages to the present municipality

After the Christian conquest of the area by King Castilian Alfonso X the Wise in the mid- thirteenth century , the term of Campello, apparently without significant population centers, became part of the term of the town of Alicante , within the Crown Castile.

A population this figure should be added the floating population is not enumerated, it is estimated that more than 70,000 in summer.

A very important part of the population is scattered developments located in a wide coastal strip. Featuring a large population growth since the ‘70s, in the period 1990-2005 the population grew by more than 100%, this rapid growth can be explained on one hand by tourism, and on the other by its growing role as a fully residential area integrated into the metropolitan area of Alicante.

Supporting the British economy

Expats now able to buy locally grown British produce from the comfort of their homes British expats living around the world now have the option to support the UK economy from afar, and have British produce delivered to their doorsteps. In the last few years online supermarkets have begun offering expats a home delivery service for their favourite foods from the UK, but up until the last year this has generally been restricted to ambient products such as Bisto Gravy and Marmite. However, supermarkets such as BritishCornerShop.co.uk (BCS) have now started to export fresh produce to selected European countries. Jo Parker, procurement manager at BCS says: “Initially our service was simply to help Brits abroad enjoy things like, a cup of Tetley Tea in the morning, or a bowl of Heinz Tomato Soup for lunch, but we now also offer a range of chilled products, giving our customers the opportunity to support not only local producers but also the British economy. So far 8 European countries including Spain can order in British fruit, vegetables, meats and cheeses from brands such as John Thorner’s, Bernard Matthews

and Covent Garden, as well as local producers like Somerset Camembert.” In light of the recent struggles of British farmers and local producers, highlighted today by Environment Secretary Owen Paterson, there is no better time for services like this to exist. Whether expats are buying from supermarkets such as British Corner Shop because they miss a proper British bacon sandwich, or whether they do so to support the economy, both help British made products get

of products such as British cheese are among the hardest hit, as they struggle to compete against the larger supermarkets. So it’s a real pleasure for us to be able to work with them and give our customers the chance to buy from and support businesses like this. We’ll continue to add to our fresh range of products and are always open to suggestions from customers should they wish to purchase particular items.” BritishCornerShop.co.uk is currently

the support they deserve. Jo added: “Smaller local producers

Folic acid is a vitamin that is required to make new cells in the body. Unfortunately the body does not store very much folic acid therefore a regular fresh supply in needed to keep us healthy. The need is especially great in pregnant women whereby folic acid is utilized by the developing fetus. Folic acid can be found in many foods including green vegetables, potatoes and some bread and cereals which are fortified with folic acid. However, even if you have a good diet it is certainly beneficial to take folic acid supplements if you are planning a pregnancy. Once pregnant you should continue to take supplements for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Research has shown that taking folic acid supplements reduces the risk of babies being born with spina bifida and cleft lip & palate. In addition, a recent study found there to be a significant decrease in the rate of premature labour and the delivery of premature infants in those mothers who take folic acid supplements for 1 year prior to conception. For the majority of women a daily dose of 400 micrograms (0.4mg) is sufficient. However, if you have had a previously affected pregnancy or you or your partner have a spinal cord defect the dosage will be higher. This will be decided by your doctor. There are also certain medical conditions whereby the

dosage will be increased by your doctor. Do remember that supplements are not a substitute for eating a healthy well balanced diet. Healthy eating is important for us all but especially for expectant mums. As soon as you know you are expecting, see your Midwife to receive accurate, professional guidance.

El Corral Del Pollo Calle Lepanto, Benidorm

“Simple but spot on.”

Reviewed 7 January 2014 The chicken coral has been in Benidorm for as long as I can remember but on a recent trip we called in to see if if things have changed at all . As long as you stick to the simple dishes you just cannot go wrong. Garlic tomato bread, mixed salad, roast chicken a few chips and a huge jug of wine to wash it all down make for a very tasty meal. The surroundings have been greened up to make you feel as though you are sat in a huge garden but the skyscrapers are still visible.

“Good reviews must have come from owners!”

This place looks lovely, all wooden surrounded by trees, paradise. Don’t be fooled. I can only think that the good reviews of this restaurant are written by the owners. My uncle ordered the salmon pasta, which I firmly believed had been sitting in a pan somewhere as it was all stodge and stuck together, and was simply that - pasta bows with about 5 tiny bits of salmon about half the size of a 5p piece. My husband ordered something that I cannot remember the name of, unfortunately, as if you eat this you are sure to be ill. It had an indescribable taste, we all had to taste it, and spit it out, something like cobou or copou. Anyway, eat that at your perill. We ordered the half a spit roast chicken for my friend who was meeting us there. When it came it was ‘half a chicken’, to our amusement nothing else, just half a chicken in a pool of oil; no salad, no chips, nothing. The chicken actually looked lovely, tasted lovely, but by this time we were seriously feeling physically sick so had to leave, we just couldn’t bring ourselves to eat it. Perhaps if we had ordered the chicken we might not have thought this place was too bad, just slightly bizzare as the chicken comes on its own. We paid the bill and left a tip because that’s what us English do. We went to meet my sister afterwards and they said they would have told us not to go there if she had known, her and her husband and their big group of friends who had previously had the misfortune to eat there now call this place El Corral Del Crappo. We are not complainers and are normaly easily pleased but this place ‘Seriously Awful!!!!’

Grill House Avda Mediterraneo 29, Benidorm

“wow wow wow”

Reviewed 8 February 2014 We ate here twice during our stay, the beef chop is to die for, my partner had the ribs one night, and sirloin the next night, her words were....perfect...... the welcome from the guys and girls was fantastic, we even asked for a take-away apple pie, so we could eat in our room later, as we were so full from main course, this was no problem...and the next night, I cheekily asked the young waitress is she could wrap the bone from my chap, for a friend who was sleeping off the afternoons drinks as a joke, she said no problem, would you like me to put a few chips in for him?? bless her..... thank you all, and see you next time we are over

“lovely ribs”

Reviewed 17 January 2014 The ribs in the griihouse were great and very tasty, and the meal was of excellent value, we will go again.

“Disappointed”

Been going to Benidorm for years and always had a meal at the Grill House and always enjoyed it but not this time got my normal baby rack of ribs with baked potatoe but this time ribs very tuff and crispy the normally melted in your mouth husband got steak it was the same told waiter when he came to clear table he just said sorry so won’t be going back I always looked forward to going to grill house while in Benidorm so very disappointed

“BGK could be better”

Went for several meals meals here in October this year mainly because it was near to where we stayed ,the food is more like fast food level which is ok so don’t expect too much.I think it is slightly overpriced but the portions are generous. Try the chips they are really good,it can be noisy some nights with the multi screen rock music so if this is not your thing go after 8pm when they open the other side of the restaurant it’s more quite.staff are mainly good but there’s always one isn’t there.go with low expectations and you will enjoy it.

Restaurant at the Queens Hotel Plaza Constitucion | Old Town

“Show and food”

Reviewed 5 February 2014 We saw Levi a few years back here and he was fab! Captured everyone’s attention The bar had a lot of drinks offers on which is ideal and the punters were the nice type too, no rowdiness or overly drunks. Food was nice and good price, presented well and fast service. Would visit again

“Not the best”

Reviewed 2 February 2014 We did go to the bar expecting a show but were advised that we could wait but no guarantee it would take place unless there were at least 10 people in the bar. As this was January it was unlikely to be full and the show did not happen. I would suggest they do not advertise a show unless they know it will happen. Food was reasonable and very friendly staff

“dont go there”

Reviewed 26 January 2014 we ate there a few years ago and went back thinking we would enjoy the meal , its been taken over I ordered cottage pie it was floating in oil I was offered another meal but declined, a few days later we decided to give it another chance big mistake I ordered beef curry and was given beef korma ? I always thought of korma with chicken not beef, would not go again

“Staying at the Royal Queens Hotel, Benidorm, Spain”

Reviewed 17 December 2013 Stayed HB for the first few nights... food was great, freshly cooked and more than enough....Breakfast sets you u for the day and can have it until 2 pm I believe..... Dinner you can have from 4 pm until 10 pm three courses included in the HB deal.... Great .

“Great place”

Reviewed 13 December 2013 Great place, brilliant staff, food ok, and customers are always up for a laugh, love the terrace will be back.

Shopping & Style The Story of Denim

When and how was denim created? Denim as we know it was never created but evolved and still does today over time. During the 1600’s historians believe the French made garments using woolblended fabrics called “serge de nimes”. Around the same time, Italians produced apparel from a fabric called “genes” supposedly named after the city of Genoa. Both were natural indigo twill fabrics. Levi Strauss historian Lynn Downey claims Mr. Levi Strauss “was the inventor of the quintessentially American and now global garment.” Levi Strauss made durable garments for gold miners fusing rivets for reinformcemetns. Lee Jeans made overalls for mechanics who painted to protect their good clothes. Evolution of Jeans: Jeans has been, and is an important item of clothing for many decades. Denim garments came into existence during the 18th century, a time when there was abundant production of cotton. During that period, it gained importance due to its aspects of durability, and not easily torn which benefited physical labourers much. During the 19th century the garment was popularized by Levi Strauss, a well-known name in the jean world. Denim clothing was manufactured by them for miners. 20th century brought jeans as a fad of pop culture. Western cowboy movies portrayed people wearing blue jeans. The 50s witnessed the cloth becoming a craze of the teen age population.

Manufacturers utilized the situation by coming up with innovative designs like new colours, embroidery and patch works. During 60s and 70s bell bottoms and hip hugger patterns became popular. It was during the 80s denims started drawing attention of the fashion designers. New and

metamorphosis of jeans from a commodity to a fashion item happened during the 90s; when jeans evaluated into a number of various other items such as jackets, shorts, skirts etc apart from the normal pants. Earlier different models like hippie bellbottoms, and tapered legs, were popular. Current trend is all about variety and views denim as an item with bold styles to keep pace with the fast track life style.

glamorous patterns were created and were brought to lime light by popular models in commercials. Puffy pants, puffy shoulder pads, and puffy hair became a style. In the 90s; it became one of the most sought after garment. To skim the cream of the denim market, manufacturers then, came up with various innovative ideas of using the denim fabric like poodle skirts, caps, handbags etc. It was during that time the denim sales skyrocketed. Currently the new millennium finds denim in each and every home; worldwide. Denim as a Fashion Icon: From the place of normal clothing, denim has risen to be a fashion icon and is being adorned by fashion models. It has now become a symbol of modelling and modern culture. Getting Crafty

The enjoyment of a variety of crafts led to Barbara Price a member of the U3A Marina Baixa forming a craft group in February 2013 at the Albir Social Centre. This has progressed with other members who have since joined bringing a variety of their own favorite pastimes and introducing new activities and techniques. Some enjoy making various types of greeting cards and the standard produced is extremely high. Materials are gleaned from many sources, old greeting cards, ribbons, scraps of materials, maybe sheet music which can be dipped in tea to give an aged look. The imagination of the members is quite extensive. One member, Elaine Mitchell is very gifted in the art of architectural origami and produces wonderful results which are much sought after.

It’s all you need for a great read. Barbara the group leader enjoys Pergamano which is the craft of making cards and decorations from stiff parchment paper. This involves embossing and then pricking out intricate designs to give the effect of lace. It is a craft originating from the women of South America and can be very intricate. Members who began this craft with the group are becoming quite proficient with the help of Barbara. The craft of patchwork produces quilts of high standard and some have been donated to childrens charities and hospitals. Members enjoy many other crafts including cross stitch which is always a popular pastime. All these crafts are easily transportable and this makes them popular for the meetings. Barbara enjoys making jewellery and also glass painting but these activities are not practical at the meetings (no paints are allowed in the new Albir Social Centre). A very popular craft learned is the decorating of candles. These are very popular for Christmas and many have been sold at the U3A craft fair held in November. The U3A Marina Baixa craft group meet each Thursday at the Albir Social Centre 12.30 to 3.00pm.The group although small in numbers welcomes visitors to either learn new crafts or demonstrate their own. Materials are available if there is any craft they would like to try. U3A Marina Baixa general meetings are held on the 4th Monday of the month in the Albir Social Centre (near Mercadona) 10.30 for 11.00am. The next meeting is Monday 24thFebruary when the speaker Elaine Mitchell will present a slide show ¨Life in the U3A during 2013¨. They play both Full contact tackle football as well as the non-contact version of the game Flag football; flag football is suitable for everyone regardless of age or gender. After 18 months of being a flag team the Spartans made the step to become a full tackle team, playing its 1st game at home on the 17th of March 2012 beating the Cartagena Pretorianos in front of over 300 fans, not bad for your debut! They host a tournament every year to celebrate the start of the team which becomes increasingly popular every year, it’s called The Bowl de Verano, it takes

place in August every year, which you may think is crazy because of the heat but it is a fantastic occasion with lots of teams, fans cheerleaders and people getting involved. They stage live music and activities and if you ever get too hot you won’t be on your own if you fancy a dip in the pool The Spartans are on the lookout for anyone interested in the game to get involved, everyone is welcome but they are making special requests for Juniors and the ladies!...They are still looking for adults to join the team as well but are really hoping to push the numbers in the smaller programs, training is free for your first month so there is no harm in trying it out, it is a fantastic way of getting fit and socialising and there’s no commitment to play if you don’t want to. The contact version of the game requires insurance so don’t worry you’re not going to turn up and get tackled on your first day. The team trains 3 times a week Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays and if you were to become a member you get social membership at the La Nucia Sports Centre which gives you massive discounts on all the amenities and also discounts around Benidorm including the Theme Parks. The head coach Ben has been involved in American football since he was four years old and , has been coaching in Spain since 2007, before Spain he has coached under 13’s and under 19s in Great Britain flag football and then went on to coach the Great Britain under 10’s team into the European Championships landing them 2nd place, a tremendous achievement for a sport that is not well known in the UK, for his superb skills he was awarded British coach of the year in 2000. You can find the team training at the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano in La Nucía You can also find them online http://facebook.com/lanucia.spartans1 http://www.lanuciaspartans.com

Issue 19 / 18-24 February 2014

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

If you’re accused of selfishness at some point in the first half of the week - or if it suddenly dawns on you that you’re being selfish - the easiest fix is to turn the glow of your attention onto someone else. Think about them. Do them a favor they didn’t ask for. Be charming. By Thursday, you register your own growth as a person. It’s a slow process, a lifelong process, but a sense of renewal is definitely within you on Friday. The laziness you feel at the end of the week contrasts sharply with the million-miles-an-hour mode you’re in on the weekend.

CANCER

You may be in the mood to buy a new stove, or repaint the kitchen, or go in a new direction with the layout of the garden. But have you considered that what’s really getting under your skin has nothing to do with the kitchen or the garden? If something’s bothering you at home, deal with it directly. That’s easier said than done, of course. Thursday is defined by emotional upheaval, and Friday you’re basically useless at work, what with all that’s on your mind. Saturday and Sunday, get out of the house. Why not take yourself to the movies?

LIBRA

TAURUS

There isn’t anything particularly unusual about Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, but something wonderful is definitely afoot. It’s a feeling. The everyday stuff seems fascinating. Your friends are funnier than ever. Your attachment to them is so strong that on Thursday, when you have coffee or dinner with one friend, another may become jealous. This kind of jealousy is ridiculous, but it speaks to how much you adore one another. On Friday, you’re moody (and a bit sensitive yourself!), but Saturday and Sunday you’re utterly charming.

LEO

‘You plus friends’ is a winning combination on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday as well - whether it’s you or them or something in the air that none of you has anything to do with, you seem almost psychically connected this week. Your romantic life is active, too. Your needs are being met in just about every realm. It’s only natural that on Thursday you begin to think deeply about this state of happiness, such as where it comes from and how to maintain it. On Friday, your thinking is concentrated on thwarting the efforts of plotters, but your attitude is unchanging. The weekend is out of a storybook.

SCORPIO

You’ll blush so many times between Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon that someone may ask you (jokingly) if you’re having an allergic reaction to something. What is it that makes everyone want to flirt with you right now? Is it your sly smile? Your shoes? Your social life is in tip-top shape until around Thursday, when work woes weigh you down. Business matters figure strongly on Friday as well. Maybe you’re making up for all that time you spent in coffee shops earlier in the week. On Saturday and Sunday, you finally achieve a nice balance between what you have to do and what you want to do.

You could go either way. You can see both sides. You’d love a lot of toppings on your ice cream, but ordering it without toppings has an appealing simplicity as well. You’re in love with so-and-so; you’re not in love. Sheesh! How do people make decisions in this world? Have patience. Toward the second half of the week, an amazing thing happens: Many answers become apparent. They reveal themselves. You barely have to decide anything. The people you’re drawn to are suddenly drawn to you. Chalk it up to chemistry. This weekend, caught up in the magic, you may go on an unlikely adventure.

You’re well aware of what everyone else thinks. The pressing question at the start of the week is: What do you think? There couldn’t be a better period of time to initiate new projects than Tuesday and Wednesday. But if you’re unclear on what you want, how will you get it? What should the shape of your next project be? Friends might help you with this. Pay someone a visit on Thursday - go for a walk or possibly bowling - and talk it through. On Friday, your deepest hopes suddenly seem clear, and you have the resources you need to make them come to fruition. Take this weekend to plan.

Your new ally may come in a funny disguise at the start of the week. Everyone’s seems to be wearing some kind of mask right now. Go outside of your comfort zone and try to connect with someone you almost assuredly have nothing in common with; you may be surprised how wrong you are. The energy you get from this burgeoning friendship will have you buzzing on Wednesday. Thursday or Friday, you’re required to say something in front of a group, which has you completely nervous. Saturday and Sunday are a blast.

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

GEMINI

You’re busy this week - especially the first half. Action, romance, partnerships and new projects all come into play. Those new projects may not all pan out the way you’d like them to, but your talent right now is simply getting things started, so don’t worry. Thursday and Friday find you more calculating - you’re taking measure of your life and work, asking tough question of good friends and reading heavy books. But the weekend is filled with plans and pals. On Sunday, watch your dogmatic streak. No one (not even you) wants to be preached to.

VIRGO

If you’re going to the store at the start of the week, bring a friend. Your shopping is best done with a partner right now. You may need some advice, or you may go in on a big purchase together. The benefits of the shopping excursion also may have nothing to do with the shopping itself. A conversation with a pal on Wednesday about the difference between the things you want and the things you need sets you up to be in deep-thinking mode on Thursday and Friday. This weekend, if you’re feeling stuck, take a risk.

SAGITTARIUS

You need some time to think things through. You need to prepare for what you’re getting into. The major message broadcasted during the first half of the week is that you’re loved by your friends. But that doesn’t solve your career-related quandaries. On Wednesday, the law (or a lawyer, or justice itself) comes into play in some way. Thursday and Friday, you’re contemplating the big picture in a nonspecific, hard-to-articulate way. Your subconscious is going crazy. But by Saturday and Sunday, the atmosphere of the weekend takes over, and joviality and lightness dominate.

PISCES

People are crazy. Just when you feel like you and you-know-who are going to take over the world together - in a peaceful, wonderful way - they flake out on you. They become distracted. Their reasons may be valid, but the truth remains: If you want something, it’s on your own shoulders to make it happen. You can handle that. You have great shoulders. Toward the second half of the week, your resolve strengthens even more, and you take someone who’s treating you like a doormat to the curb. You do it smiling. You’re a pro. This weekend, things finally start going your way.

So as long as you’re above ground and not under some sort of rainforest canopy, you should be able to connect from literally anywhere on Earth. Because the Iridium GO! creates a whole Wi-Fi zone, you can set it out in the open while you yourself are using your phone in a heavy tent, or under an overhang, so you can remain within your shelter. The Iridium GO! will be rolling out sometime in the first half of 2014. The price will depend on retailers, but Iridium expects it to be under £500. Yeah, that’s steep, and don’t forget you’re going to need a plan in order to connect. Again, plan pricing will be set by retailers but Iridium estimates that they will begin around $35 (£21) a month on the low end, and about $130 (£80) a month on the high end for unlimited data.

SUDOKU ANSWER

Look at this little guy. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but powerful enough to enable you to make phone calls, text, and use data virtually anywhere in the world. Even on the peaks of remote mountains or in the middle of uninhabited deserts, thanks to the magic of satellites. The Iridium GO! creates a Wi-Fi network anywhere, and allows you to connect up to five devices at once for little things such as making an emergency phone call, emailing the embassy, or downloading a map to keep from dying. It also sounds extremely easy to use. Just flip up the antenna, and it connects to satellites and creates a Wi-Fi network with a range of up to 100 feet. Any iOS or Android phone or tablet can connect through Iridium’s app (just make sure you download it before you hit the trail), and then you can use your phone similarly to how you normally would. This is a significant innovation. While we’ve seen satellite-enabled iPhone cases, this has the advantage of connecting to multiple devices simultaneously (including Android devices), and giving you more flexibility in where it’s used. Great Britain's women make Olympic curling semis

Great Britain's women curlers are through to the Winter Olympic semi-finals in Sochi, but the men must face Norway in a play-off. The British women face Denmark in their final roundrobin match, but they have already done enough to qualify. David Murdoch's men lost 6-5 to China in their last group game and Norway were beaten 5-3 by Denmark. They will play each other at 06:00 (Spanish Time) on Tuesday, with the winner going on to face world champions Sweden. The men's match was a tight affair with both sides trading singles until China scored two in the fourth end. Murdoch's team pulled it back to 5-5 after nine ends but China skip Liu Rui scored a perfect draw to take the final point and the win. Great Britain's women beat Russia 9-6 in the early game on Monday. Then a combination of other results, win/loss records and the draw shot challenge, where each team fires one stone into the house and the nearest to the button claims the hammer, meant that irrespective of their result against Denmark, they were through. Great Britain face Sweden on Wednesday with the two teams involved in major finals over the last year.

British skier Rowan Cheshire remembers little of crash

British halfpipe skier Rowan Cheshire says she cannot remember much about her Winter Olympic training crash which left her unconscious. The 18-year-old spent the night in hospital after falling heavily on her face at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park in Sochi on Sunday. She tweeted a picture of her bloodied face and wrote "Wasn't the best day yesterday, still don't remember much! "Thanks everyone for the lovely messages." Cheshire, who won her first World Cup event in January and was considered an outside medal chance in Sochi, was scheduled to compete on Thursday. A decision has not yet been made as to whether the teenager from Stoke-on-Trent can make her Olympic debut. Team GB said she had had a restful night and was being discharged on Monday. Her coach Pat Sharples had stayed with her overnight and Team GB skiers Katie Summerhayes and Chemmy Alcott visited her.

Cruel Runnings! Jamaica lie dead last on bobsleigh comeback after 12 years away >>>

Despite support from Usain Bolt and much of Sochi Jamaica's two-man bob team struggle to keep pace with the competition Winston Watts, 46, was part of Jamaica's bobsleigh teams in 1994, 1998 and 2002, and this time teamed up with brake-man Marvin Dixon.

Watts had to contend with almost snapping off his helmet visor at the start of his second run, saying: "It's just one of those things. "I pulled my visor and with all the adrenaline it just broke, and I said: 'Well, I'm not going to stop now, I'll show the world I've got heart and I'll take my sled down.'" Asked about regular comparisons to the film 'Cool Runnings', featuring a Jamaican bobsleigh team, Watts added: "Cool Runnings is a very nice movie and it opened such a nice way for us, but a lot of people look at that movie and see us as jokers.

Vanessa-Mae ready for Olympic debut Violin virtuoso Vanessa-Mae will make her Olympic debut in the women’s giant slalom event from 06:30 Spanish time on Tuesday. She will compete for Thailand under her father’s name Vanakorn after qualifying for the Games last month. The British citizen, 35, who has sold more than 10 million records worldwide, has been skiing since she was four. Vanessa-Mae, who was born in Singapore to a Chinese mother and Thai father, was brought up in England but will be only the third person to represent Thailand at the Winter Olympics. She is comfortably the lowest-ranked racer in the field, at 2,253rd in the world, but some of skiing’s biggest names are looking forward to competing alongside her.

FA Cup Quarter Final Draw FA Cup Holders Wigan have been drawn away to Manchester City and Arsenal will host Everton There will be a repeat of last season's FA Cup final after holders Wigan were drawn against Manchester City in the quarter-finals. Ben Watson's late goal gave Wigan a historic triumph at Wembley in May, and Manuel Pellegrini's City side will be hoping to avenge this defeat when the two clubs meet again at the Etihad on the weekend of March 8th and 9th while Everton will travel to face Premier League rivals Arsenal. The Toffees enjoyed a 3-1 win over Swansea at Goodison Park on Sunday. Goals from Lacina Traore, Leighton Baines and Steven Naismith sealed victory for Roberto Martinez's men. There is also the possibility of a Sheffield derby at Bramall Lane after Wednesday and United were drawn against each other. The League One Blades saw off Nottingham Forest 3-1 on Sunday, while Wednesday's tie with Charlton was postponed on Saturday due to a waterlogged Hillsborough pitch. A new date is yet to be confirmed. There was the brief prospect of a Merseyside derby, but Arsenal ended the hopes of Liverpool by beating them 2-1 at the Emirates. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored in the first half and then set up Lukas Podolski for a second goal soon after the break. Steven Gerrard pulled a goal back from the penalty spot on 59 minutes, but the Gunners held on to gain a measure of revenge for their recent 5-1 humbling at Anfield in the league. Quarter-final draw: Games to be played 8th or 9th March Arsenal v Everton Brighton or Hull City v Sunderland Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday or Charlton Manchester City v Wigan

Barcelona set up an El Clasico final in the Copa del Rey (Kings Cup) despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad in the semi-final second leg. Lionel Messi scored the only goal for the visitors with Antoine Griezmann grabbing an equaliser with three minutes to go, securing a 3-1 aggregate win Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are now sharing the top spot in the Spanish football league with 57 points each, only separated by goal difference. Barcelona are still in contention to win all four major trophies this season but with the an El Clasico set for the Copa del Rey and the top of the league so close it will not be easy. The final will be playedon April 19th and like any El Northern Trust Open: Bubba Watson seals victory in Clasico final it will be full of action and excitement, California. The 35-year-old edged out Dustin Johnson don’t miss it! and finished 15 under as he claimed his first PGA Tour title since a dramatic US Masters win in 2012 .Fellow Americans Jason Allred and Brian Harman tied for third on 12 under.England’s Lee Westwood, who recently split with coach Sean Foley, shot a final round of 71 to finish six under.

Liverpool FA CUP KO

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says it was a “strange decision” by Howard Webb not to award his team a second penalty in their 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Arsenal. The Reds, who had already scored through Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick, felt Luis Suarez was fouled by Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Referee Webb, who was well positioned, ruled it was fair as Arsenal went on to reach the last eight. “It was probably more clear and blatant than the first penalty,” said Rodgers.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE A mixed bag for week 24 as the bad weather throughout the week caused a few postponements , leaving 8 Premiership & 5 FA Cup matches contributing to the week´s points, Hull´s game against Brighton, playing Monday night, will go into next week´s results. So, there were 29 goals, 46 yellow cards, no Reds & 9 clean sheets. Abby Brigade are back on top of the league 7 points above Charlies Chicos, this is really developing into cliffhanger , as is the Premiership proper. None of the top Clubs seem to be able to hit that extra bit of consistency to get a real grip on the title, great for the entertainment , but not so good for the nerves. The Mark Carter Ladies League & Juniors League remain the same, top Ladies scorer with 47 points was Beryl´s Liverbirds, let´s hope that Ian Chapman can get back into his winning ways for the Cellar Bar Cert!!

George Groves Gets His Rematch

Froch v Groves II - one of the most eagerly anticipated events in world boxing -will be shown exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office on Saturday, May 31, 2014. Boxing fans around the world called for a rematch the moment the clash between Carl Froch and George Groves last November was stopped in the ninth round and Froch awarded victory by technical knock-out. Froch will once again defend his WBA and IBF world

super-middleweight titles against the young Londoner. Should Groves win, he will become a world champion, take Froch's titles, and propel himself to the forefront of the super-middleweight division. "I know that George Groves was gone, even the people that thought the referee stopped the fight too early, still agree that the fight was only going one way which was George Groves being flat on his face," Froch said. "The British public are behind this and this was almost the only fight out there for me to reasonably take. I've given the British public what they wanted for years and years and I won't stop doing it now." Groves, who sensationally put the champion down in the first round last time, added: "Carl has to fight me now because the fans demand it and because I am mandatory for the IBF title so that's where we are at." Froch v Groves II is also part of a busy May on Sky Sports that includes live coverage of golf's Players Championship, the final day of the Premier League season, UEFA Champions League Final, Spanish and Monaco Grand Prix, Heineken Cup Final, Super League's Magic Weekend, Sky Bet Championship and League 1 and 2 Play-Offs and Finals, and Scottish Cup Final.

Schumacher ski accident No criminal wrongdoing

French investigators have ruled out any criminal wrongdoing in the debilitating ski accident of Formula One great Michael Schumacher, a state prosecutor said Monday. Albertville prosecutor Patrick Quincy said "no infraction by anyone has been turned up" and the probe has been closed, his office said in a statement Quincy's office said the rock that caused Schumacher to fall was 10.4 meters (34 feet) away from another rock upon which he hit his head — and each were more than 4 meters away from the edge of the red-level piste that he was on. Schumacher has been in a medically-induced coma in a Grenoble hospital since his accident two months ago. His spokesman said on January 30 that the drugs used to keep him in a coma were being reduced with a view to bringing him back to consciousness. His family said last Thursday he was "still in a waking up process" and that only time will tell whether he makes a full recovery. Some experts have said it will likely be months before Schumacher's prognosis becomes clear — and that lasting brain damage is a possibility.
