More jobs and lower taxes were promised by the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, during a big debate in the Spanish Parliament which focused on the state of the economy. With a General Election taking place before the end of next year, Rajoy pledged to scrap income tax for the less well off in 2015, and increased the predictions of economic growth. The Spanish leader’s speech seemed to go down well with the voters, with two national opinion polls rating him and the ruling Partido Popular comfortably ahead of his Socialist rival, Alfredo Rubalcaba, based on their performances in the chamber this week.

The Prime Minister said that Spain had turned a corner and was “part of the driving engine” of Europe, adding that economic growth forecasts for this year have been up-rated to 1% and to 1.5% for 2015. Rajoy claimed that the recession was over and that the emphasis would be on “positive” growth. Rajoy also pledged to slash tax, promising that taxpayers earning under 12 thousand Euros would not have to pay income tax from 2015, irrespective of whether or not they have dependent children. The minimum taxable threshold is to be increased for the disabled and those with dependent children, and Rajoy pledged additional aid for low-income families – although he was ‘unable’ to give any further details. People earning 20 thousand Euros would also get a reduction, which apparently means that 12 million of Spain’s 17 million taxpayers will see more money in their pockets. Some economists commented that there was little difference between Rajoy’s proposals and the actual tax structure, as currently workers who earn 11,162 Euros a year don’t have to pay taxes. “About 97 percent of the workers who earn 12,000 Euros a year already don’t pay taxes and the rest pay less than 300 Euros,” said Santiago Díaz de Sarralde, an economics professor at King Juan Carlos University. In other measures, contracts for new staff at all firms will carry a flat rate of 100 Euros a month in Social Security payments made by the employer on behalf of the Go to page 3

QUICK TIPS- Residency Status

Following our recent articles about resident and non – resident tax declarations I have received various queries regarding Residency status itself. Although the rules and regulations in this country seem to constantly change like quicksand this is how the residency issue stands currently.; Since abolishing the plastic photo id credit card format “residencia card” after ONE European gentleman complained to the Court of human rights that his personal rights where infringed by requesting he give fingerprints when he had committed no crime and already had a valid ID card from his home country, Spain opted for the large green sheet of paper which although it confirmed that one was signed on a European Citizen register, as financial and industrial borders no longer existed, this green form served little purpose- as it stated clearly on it that “this document does not accredit the identity of the bearer!” but it seemed this form is requested to carry out almost any financial transaction. This form has now been replaced by a “credit card size” green form, which is as useful for accreditation as the large one but fits more comfortably in one’s wallet. Under recent changes to the healthcare regime, to avoid “health tourism” one must now have residency to receive a SIP (healthcard) in order to benefit from the Spanish National Health service without being charged. Even if a person had a previous Spanish health card they may find that this ceases to work and may need updating. When should YOU become a resident ?; When you have been in Spain for a minimum of three months and have intent to reside for a minimum of six months each year, this classifies you as a “habitual resident” when your income is received here and you pay your taxes here then you are classified as a “fiscal resident” usually these are one and the same – but there are exceptions. How do I obtain this card if I do not have one already?; You will need to demonstrate to the police what is known as the “wonderbra rule” ie; adequate coverage and a visible means of support. (Proof that you receive an income and will not be a burden to the state or the healthcare system.) The simplest way to demonstrate this is if you are on a contract working here in Spain you can show your work history (vida laboral) together with your sign on to the Spanish social security office as an employee or selfemployed person. If you are retired then you should show your S1 form from the UK department of Work and Pensions together with a certificate from the bank showing proof of monthly pension income. You will still have to attend the police station in person with originals and copies of various documents and of course there is an administrative tax to pay. Like anything bureaucratically related in this country, everybody´s case can be different depending on personal circumstances, so you should seek advice from an integration consultant if you are unsure of how residency affects you. Freemason peaks Mt Aconcagua for Alicante charity

A FREEMASON'S quest to summit the highest mountain in the Americas has raised more than €5,000 for the homeless in Alicante province. Thomas Ronning, from Alfaz del Pi, is a local Fremason who recently scaled and reached the summit of Mt. Aconcagua (White Sentinel) in the Andes mountain range in Argentina scaling the 'Polish Traverse' which took in total 20 days. In doing so has raised over €5,000 for the 2014 Valencian Provincial Feemasonry Charity in aid of purchasing an Ambulance and a soon to be presented 'Mobile day Centre for the Homeless' for the Cruz Roja in Alicante. The Mobile Day Centre is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain and will attend to the poor and destitute on a routine basis at dedicated points across the province.

Massive Attack and Kaiser Chiefs at Low Festival 2014 The Low Festival have confirmed new international names for this year’s festival which will be held 25th to 27th of July in the sports complex of Benidorm “Guillermo Amor”. This new batch of confirmations has a very British flavour, as six of the seven bands announced are from the UK heading these announcements are Massive Attack and Kaiser Chiefs. Massive Attack will return to Spain after a long time away the legendary band from Bristol will perform on the Budweiser stage with amazing show combining staging technology, music and political content, undoubtedly a unique experience. Also announced are the Kaiser Chiefs, the boys from Leeds will be performing tracks from their new album, 'Education, Education, Education and War', which is due to be released on the 31st of March, you can catch their first single from the album “Coming Home” on you tube, we still expect to hear some classics as well such as Ruby and Everyday I love you less

and less' alongside these another five bands have also been announced: Holy Ghost, Yuck, Palma Violets, We Have Band and Andie Wee and the Midnight Sound all but one of these bands are from the UK. Londoners Palma Violets have been a great surprise among critics and audiences since their debut single "Best of Friends". We Have Band, a trio from Manchester, visit with a new album entitled "Movements", the third in their career that will be released on April 28th. Andie Wee and The Midnight Sound, bring in an Irish touch composing, soul, groove and dance. The last of the UK bands announced Yuck are from London, and they bring you some very enjoyable and catchy riffs. Holy Ghost!, the New York synthpop duo land at Levante after a full tour of the United States and Canada, their new album 'Dynamics', which has won three awards from the New Pitchfork Music Awards and regarded as "an unavoidable dance pop album." RAISING A BIG SMILE FOR DEBRA

The Smile Charity Group have been very busy again with their Fund-raising activities. Recently, thanks to a fantastic night's entertainment from Maria O'Hara, Vinny Mack and Benny, they managed to raise just over 1,000 euros for DEBRA (Butterfly Children). On 19th March they will, once again, be hosting a Rock 'n' Roll Night with ‘WOODY & THE PECKERS’, and raising funds for the ‘BENIJÓFAR CRISIS APPEAL’. Trams Back Up & Running

After more than three months without rail connection, FGV restored service to the Train Tram Line 9 last Friday; this line runs between Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi. AVOID THE KILLER CATERPILLARS

These caterpillars represent a public health hazard because they have thousands of hairs which contain an irritating protein called thaumetopoein. These hairs can be blown by the wind into contact with people and animals, resulting in painful skin irritations and rashes and, in some cases, allergic reactions in some people and animals. They are native to, and until recently were only found in the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and some areas of the Middle East and southern Europe. In Spain especially, they are a huge problem. They feed

off the needles of pine trees and it is very easy to spot their nests. Looking at a pine tree, if you see a white ball, which resembles cotton wool or candy floss, that is them. More commonly referred to as the pine processionary caterpillar as its name implies, they are a kind of caterpillar that lives on the tree tops of Pine Trees. The word processionary comes from the fact that they line-up forming long caterpillar lines that can reach several meters long, although generally they only measure around a centimetre in length. If you come across them, do not touch them! Warn your children that they are not like the friendly English caterpillars. The very fine hairs on these

creatures are poisonous and most dangerous. They are most noticeable from January to mid-April and are at their most dangerous in mid/late February. The caterpillars are often seen in the evenings, walking in procession from tree to tree. If they drop onto you or your pet, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t brush them off with your hands because the effect is most unpleasant, causing great irritation, rash and pain. Dogs, cats and people can suffer from shock. The hairs of the caterpillars are still very harmful even when the creatures are dead. Do not hit them with sticks because hairs flying in the air are just as dangerous. Burn them, but be careful of floating hairs. If the caterpillars are in the tree cocoon state, first spray the nest with hair spray (to seal down the hairs), cover the cocoon and the affected part of the branch with a plastic bag, cut down the branch, place it on clear ground and burn it. Most councils in Spain take this problem very seriously and they will be trimming the pine trees and treating them so that they are not infested. So when you are out with your dogs, keep a look out for the nests in the trees or a line of caterpillars following each other. If you spot them, get your dog away from them instantly or it could prove to be an extremely painful lesson for our four legged friends as well as for us.

“Cheap, cheerful and perfect for benidorm weekender”

Reviewed 9 February 2014 Ate from the Menu of the Day and it was fantastic, good fresh wholesome food very tasty and served with friendly and efficient service. The restauant and bar was very clean and it has a very nice ambience I was a solo diner and was made to feel very welcome and given a good table in the main body of the busy restaurant, which on a Saturday evening was quite refreshing . All in all i would definitely recommmend Carpe Diem for a very friendly relaxed dining experience.

Reviewed 13 January 2014 Visited old town Benidorm for a week in January and spent several evenings in Carpe Diem. Service was excellent, beer served in iced glasses, cava not expensive. Always had a few tapas as lots of locals were doing . Lots of choice and constantly kept fresh and renewed. Enjoyed the Pa ‘n’ tomate [toast with tomato pulp and garlic] and the potatas bravas.

A small but very intimate restaurant, situated in the Old Town, Benidorm. Very well run by English owners and staff. The four course meal we had for 9.95 euro was simply one of the best meals I have had for a long time. Home made tomato soup, followed by mussels ( out of the shell ) in a lovely creamy wine sauce. Pork loin in an apple and cider sauce - The pork was just so tender, it sliced like butter. And then to top it all off, a ‘ to die for’ chocolate and mint cheesecake....My wife started with melon served with ground ginger, then also the mussels. Reviewed 3 January 2014 Just loved this place and Severin’s food concept. This was our (wife and I) first visit on Xmas Day, so we took a risk, but we trusted the other great reviews on Trip Advisor. From meeting to seating to eating - they put not a foot wrong. The place was full, the staff attentive and of course the food was simply excellent. The chef told us we would not be disappointed and indeed we were not. We loved all 5 dishes we had + starter dips. The house wine was very good (we had a bottle each). There is no ‘menu’ as such - the concept is the very skilled and passionate chef cooks seasonal and changes daily - (perhaps not to everyone’s fancy) but as we love most things we enjoyed the surprise, presentation and taste of all our dishes. The Chef Sevrin is very attentive and explains his dishes as they are served. We had: Duck Confit with Figs | Cocktail of roasted pumpkin.parsnips and goats cheese | Lobster cappuccino + pan fried scallops | Veal medallions + morils | 4 mini desserts (creme brulee, tiramisu ice, vanilla cream, strawberry macaroon INCREDIBLY presented and so tasty... theLobster Cappuccino was delicious! "Norwegian nucieros" visit the headquarters of the Local Police A group of Norwegian residents of La Nucia visited last Thursday 20 February, the Central Local Police in La Nucia. This neighborhood group of 30 people was interested to know first hand this public building and see a practical demonstration of the camera system control and traffic surveillance La Nucia. During the visit they were accompanied by Bart Gommans, Councillor for Foreign Residents of La Nucia and the head of the local police in La Nucia. During the visit special emphasis was placed on the

telecommunications room and the modern control and traffic surveillance. Norwegian neighbors made different questions about this system and the local police in general were answered by Councillor Bart Gommans and the head of the local police in La Nucia. The experience was so positive that from the Department of Foreign Residents already working on coordinating another visit to other municipal departments with this group of "Norwegian nucieros" living in different developments of La Nucia.

A GROOVY NIGHT AT LIL´S LOUNGE BAR

A 60´s/70´s theme night was held at Lil´s Lounge Bar in Albir on Saturday 22nd February in aid of MABS Cancer Support Group, Benidorm Branch. Customers turned out in fancy dress costumes, from 60´s rock chicks, lads in hippy outfits and ladies in flower power dresses. The entertainment for the evening was karaoke with everyone having fun and singing along. During the evening a raffle was held with prizes being donated by local businesses followed by a buffet. Leigh, representative from MABS, thanked Debbie, owner, Clare, manager and staff for all their hard work and continued support to MABS and to their customers who made the evening such a great success. A staggering 865 euros were raised.

Saltitos This lovely dog has been in Benidorm pound for 4 years and has recently become severely depressed. His legs have swollen and we are getting him urgent veterinary care. His pen is small and with only 1 short walk a day it is most likely this lack of exercise that is causing his current poor health and depression. U3A MARINA BAIXA PICNIC - VILLA GADEA

The sun was shining so the sudden drop in temperature was no deterrent to the hardy U3A Marina Baixa picnic group in February. Donning boots, coats & scarves they met at Villa Gadea picnic area for their monthly get together. Taking the N332 through Altea to the Villa Gadea Hotel the picnic area is at the side of what must be the most beautiful location for the Altea local police. This is the most northern location used for the picnics with beautiful views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Bernia. Tables erected it was predominantly flasks of hot soup the favorite food, but as an extra treat Hazel Layt had baked a cake and Liz Parker produced mince pies! The group enjoyed a pleasant distraction being entertained by a red squirrel scampering up the Palm and Olive trees. Elaine Mitchell took over leadership of this popular group in November 2011 and it continues to thrive. It is not unusual to have over 30 members in attendance especially as the weather becomes more settled. Every month Elaine prepares a quiz, often topical – no prizes, so no pressure! Just good fun and invariable causing some amusement! After the quiz Elaine entertains the group with a poem or a recitation that is normally very humorous. The group gathers on the 2nd.Tuesday of every month. The venues are varied to ensure the same members are not always travelling from one side of the catchment area to the other and also depending on whether shade from the sun is needed or not ! From October through to May the group enjoy afternoon picnics and meet at 1.30pm but for pleasant evening picnics from June to September the time changes to 6pm. A favorite summer venue is Playa de Torres near Villajoyosa, with the Eucalyptus trees offering shade. Many of the popular picnic areas are suggested by the members, the most central for most is the Eucalyptus Park in Albir and the Scandinavian Park in Alfaz del Pi. A very popular summer picnic location is the picturesque Amadorio Resevoir near Orcheta. On Tuesday 11th.March the picnic will be Parc Font de la Favara, La Nucia on the CV715 at 1.30pm.
