More jobs and lower taxes were promised by the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, during a big debate in the Spanish Parliament which focused on the state of the economy. With a General Election taking place before the end of next year, Rajoy pledged to scrap income tax for the less well off in 2015, and increased the predictions of economic growth. The Spanish leader’s speech seemed to go down well with the voters, with two national opinion polls rating him and the ruling Partido Popular comfortably ahead of his Socialist rival, Alfredo Rubalcaba, based on their performances in the chamber this week.

The Prime Minister said that Spain had turned a corner and was “part of the driving engine” of Europe, adding that economic growth forecasts for this year have been up-rated to 1% and to 1.5% for 2015. Rajoy claimed that the recession was over and that the emphasis would be on “positive” growth. Rajoy also pledged to slash tax, promising that taxpayers earning under 12 thousand Euros would not have to pay income tax from 2015, irrespective of whether or not they have dependent children. The minimum taxable threshold is to be increased for the disabled and those with dependent children, and Rajoy pledged additional aid for low-income families – although he was ‘unable’ to give any further details. People earning 20 thousand Euros would also get a reduction, which apparently means that 12 million of Spain’s 17 million taxpayers will see more money in their pockets. Some economists commented that there was little difference between Rajoy’s proposals and the actual tax structure, as currently workers who earn 11,162 Euros a year don’t have to pay taxes. “About 97 percent of the workers who earn 12,000 Euros a year already don’t pay taxes and the rest pay less than 300 Euros,” said Santiago Díaz de Sarralde, an economics professor at King Juan Carlos University. In other measures, contracts for new staff at all firms will carry a flat rate of 100 Euros a month in Social Security payments made by the employer on behalf of the Go to page 3

QUICK TIPS- Residency Status

Following our recent articles about resident and non – resident tax declarations I have received various queries regarding Residency status itself. Although the rules and regulations in this country seem to constantly change like quicksand this is how the residency issue stands currently.; Since abolishing the plastic photo id credit card format “residencia card” after ONE European gentleman complained to the Court of human rights that his personal rights where infringed by requesting he give fingerprints when he had committed no crime and already had a valid ID card from his home country, Spain opted for the large green sheet of paper which although it confirmed that one was signed on a European Citizen register, as financial and industrial borders no longer existed, this green form served little purpose- as it stated clearly on it that “this document does not accredit the identity of the bearer!” but it seemed this form is requested to carry out almost any financial transaction. This form has now been replaced by a “credit card size” green form, which is as useful for accreditation as the large one but fits more comfortably in one’s wallet. Under recent changes to the healthcare regime, to avoid “health tourism” one must now have residency to receive a SIP (healthcard) in order to benefit from the Spanish National Health service without being charged. Even if a person had a previous Spanish health card they may find that this ceases to work and may need updating. When should YOU become a resident ?; When you have been in Spain for a minimum of three months and have intent to reside for a minimum of six months each year, this classifies you as a “habitual resident” when your income is received here and you pay your taxes here then you are classified as a “fiscal resident” usually these are one and the same – but there are exceptions. How do I obtain this card if I do not have one already?; You will need to demonstrate to the police what is known as the “wonderbra rule” ie; adequate coverage and a visible means of support. (Proof that you receive an income and will not be a burden to the state or the healthcare system.) The simplest way to demonstrate this is if you are on a contract working here in Spain you can show your work history (vida laboral) together with your sign on to the Spanish social security office as an employee or selfemployed person. If you are retired then you should show your S1 form from the UK department of Work and Pensions together with a certificate from the bank showing proof of monthly pension income. You will still have to attend the police station in person with originals and copies of various documents and of course there is an administrative tax to pay. Like anything bureaucratically related in this country, everybody´s case can be different depending on personal circumstances, so you should seek advice from an integration consultant if you are unsure of how residency affects you. We recommend ALBA Consultas Ltd who´s details you will find on this same page.

Trams Back Up & Running

After more than three months without rail connection, FGV restored service to the Train Tram Line 9 last Friday; this line runs between Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi. Although service resumed it wasn’t without its problems, a fault in the automatic locking system, which regulates the movement of trains through light signals failed forcing the operators to control the old-fashioned way. Calls were made by staff of each station to warn of the start and finish of each convoy, and thus avoiding the situation of two trains at once on the same route. It was also confirmed that they had located the cause of the fault and that the problem is completely resolved. The works have a budget of 3.3 million the first stage of works is now complete and more work will resume in April lasting for two more months. Apart from this fault, restoring trains between Benidorm and Alfaz have prevented travellers from having to cover the distance between the two towns by bus, as they have been doing since November. Therefore, many regular users of this transport showed their satisfaction yesterday and agreed that, although the buses were proved to be a great alternative travelling all the way to the Tram is "more comfortable. "Frequent users were still unaware over the weekend of the reopening of the service and for some at Benidorm station; change platforms generated some confusion among users.

It’s all you need for a great read.

COFFEE SHOP REVOLUTION COMING TO SPAIN The Macchiato Coffee Shop recently opened in Benidorm it is the town’s only real Coffee Shop. Is this the start of the Coffee Shop revolution?

In the UK there is estimated to be over 16,500 Coffee shops and this number continues to grow, last year they showed a strong sales growth of 6.4 with a £6.2 billion total turnover. This would be the 15th year the coffee shop industry in the UK has shown considerable growth; the coffee shop sector continues to be one of the most successful in the UK economy. Costa Coffee are currently the market leaders in the UK they have 1,670 outlets followed by Starbucks Coffee Company with 790 and Caffè Nero at 560 these are the UK’s leading brands with a 54% branded chain market outlet share. If you think the market is flooded think again the Coffee Shop market is still growing strong and Costa Coffee alone added 118 UK outlets in

12

2013. With an 18% sales growth, so what’s happening with the Coffee culture in Spain? According to “Costa Coffee” European Franchise Director Ralph Llanwarne, the chain’s priority in Spain will be gaining visibility in travel structures before investing in the street market in which they plan to open more than 70 Costa Coffee outlets in central and southern Spain. The 180 square meter flagship store, located at the Terminal 1 “El Prat” Barcelona Airport opened in June 2013 by Airfoods, a Grupo Enasui subsidiary, and then next came Costa Coffee at Alicante “El Altet” Airport in September 2013. The UK is now a nation of great coffee drinkers, 1 in 5 coffee shop visitors visit coffee shops every day. Coffee venues increasingly play an important social and community role as well as being a large contributor to UK employment and the economy something that would be welcomed here in Spain. European and British tourists coming here looking for Coffee Shops would surely offer the ideal market place in establishing the Coffee Shop trend. The Macchiato Coffee Shop offers real Italian “Manuel” Coffee products, which has 50 years of expertise roasting coffee beans. The Manuel Cafe is the specialist supplier of the best products to bars and coffee shops; they also offer a range of Tea products including 10 fruit infusions, there are 24 types of tea sachets covering 4 classes, with so much choice this really is a great place to visit or get you’re the best quality products for your business or home. Macchiato Coffee Shop sells all of the Manuel Caffe products as well as items for your home and gift sets. We recommend that you taste the quality of the Coffee and other specialist beverages on offer and if you are feeling hungry then have lunch or a snack from their menu, they offer

12" Homemade Pizza from 6€, Wonderful Burgers, Hotdogs & Cheese Dogs, Panini's, Sandwiches and a selection of beautiful salads. torrevieja

Internacional de Musica, Centro Cultural del Carmen, Teatro Municipal and Palacio de la Musica. Market day & night: along the promenade, mainly tourist and trinket stores no fresh produce, smaller with shorter opening hours in the winter, it is open all day and all night, all of the year. Funfair: during the summer evenings only, lively atmosphere. Marina Promenade: 1.3km long elevated pier good for a brisk walk, it is floodlit every evening.

Torrevieja is a busy, bustling town that has a lively atmosphere all year round, day and night. The two harbours offer a relaxing atmosphere where you can sit back and unwind or enjoy a boat trip to either Tabaraca island or a short Coastal Experience. The promenade and 1.3km marina promenade are both excellent places to stretch your legs or burn off the ice cream! There are two major beaches either side of the marinas which get very busy during the summer. The day and night market along the sea front means that there is always something to do and the funfair provides more entertainment during the summer evenings. Try the tourist train to find out about the history of Torrevieja or visit the Tourist Office for information about its museums. The Habaneras is a modern open air 3 story shopping mall which includes all the usual shops such as Zara, H&M, C&A, Gerry Weber, Pull and Bear and Mango. There are cafes on the top floor giving stunning views towards the mountains and the setting sun. It is normally open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm. The Ozone Complex is situated behind the Habaneras and offers great

fun for the whole family. There is a Ten Pin Bowling Alley with arcade games and pool tables and a Crazy Golf course. There are many ‘fast food’ type restaurants in and around both the Habaneras and Ozone. There are two water parks in Torrevieja. The Aquopolis is ideal for teenagers, whilst the Flamingo Park is great for young children under the age of ten. Both are open during the summer months only and make for a fun packed day out.

Places of interest in Torrevieja Town Centre: large selection of shops and restaurants. Tourist Office: more information about the Submarine S61 Delfin, Albatros III, the Sea and Salt Museum, the Salt Industry Information Centre, Nativity Museum, Museum of Printing and Curiosities, Ricardo Lafuente Habanera Museum, Natural History Museum and Tourist Train. Cultural Venues: Auditorio Conservatorio

MARCH ISSUE No.1/ 4th-10th March 2014 (#21)

Denise and David Stirrup have been in the "rag trade” for 30+ years. In in UK they owned a clothes manufacturing company called “Howie`s Fashions” and managed 50 people sewing, cutting and pressing fabrics into clothes for brands like Fred Perry, Simon Jersey, Empire Stores and other catalogue companies When moving the family to Spain in 1998 they tried to continue the business of tailor made garments by themselves in the popular calle Gerona and later moved to Benidorm Indoor Market to try and help increase production. With little interest from residents and tourists they soon realised that they needed to change their profession to drapery as more people were asking for curtains to be altered and also people were bringing material from the outdoor market to have it made to measure. Realising that there would be more demand for

Spanish materials as people would want to take home something different, they travelled inland Spain and found wonderful Spanish Laces and great PollyCotton Heavyweight fabrics. Now they also purchase materials from Germany and Voiles with high quality embroidery from Turkey to offer a wide variety and keep ahead of competition in bespoke window treatments! Just Denise Curtains shop is now managed by Howard the son and has expanded by opening a new showroom on the main aisle of the Indoor Market to help catch more passing trade and also exhibit more fabrics than ever before. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality and options available…pairs of full length starting from as little as 60€/£50, made within a few days for collection or delivered to your home address by FedEx.

AVOID THE KILLER CATERPILLARS

These caterpillars represent a public health hazard because they have thousands of hairs which contain an irritating protein called thaumetopoein. These hairs can be blown by the wind into contact with people and animals, resulting in painful skin irritations and rashes and, in some cases, allergic reactions in some people and animals. They are native to, and until recently were only found in the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and some areas of the Middle East and southern Europe. In Spain especially, they are a huge problem. They feed

off the needles of pine trees and it is very easy to spot their nests. Looking at a pine tree, if you see a white ball, which resembles cotton wool or candy floss, that is them. More commonly referred to as the pine processionary caterpillar as its name implies, they are a kind of caterpillar that lives on the tree tops of Pine Trees. The word processionary comes from the fact that they line-up forming long caterpillar lines that can reach several meters long, although generally they only measure around a centimetre in length. If you come across them, do not touch them! Warn your children that they are not like the friendly English caterpillars. The very fine hairs on these

creatures are poisonous and most dangerous. They are most noticeable from January to mid-April and are at their most dangerous in mid/late February. The caterpillars are often seen in the evenings, walking in procession from tree to tree. If they drop onto you or your pet, don’t brush them off with your hands because the effect is most unpleasant, causing great irritation, rash and pain. Dogs, cats and people can suffer from shock. The hairs of the caterpillars are still very harmful even when the creatures are dead. Do not hit them with sticks because hairs flying in the air are just as dangerous. Burn them, but be careful of floating hairs. If the caterpillars are in the tree cocoon state, first spray the nest with hair spray (to seal down the hairs), cover the cocoon and the affected part of the branch with a plastic bag, cut down the branch, place it on clear ground and burn it. Most councils in Spain take this problem very seriously and they will be trimming the pine trees and treating them so that they are not infested. So when you are out with your dogs, keep a look out for the nests in the trees or a line of caterpillars following each other. If you spot them, get your dog away from them instantly or it could prove to be an extremely painful lesson for our four legged friends as well as for us.

Carpe Diem Alameda del Alcalde Don Pedro Zaragoza, 24, Old Town

“Cheap, cheerful and perfect for benidorm weekender”

Reviewed 9 February 2014 Ate from the Menu of the Day and it was fantastic, good fresh wholesome food very tasty and served with friendly and efficient service. The restauant and bar was very clean and it has a very nice ambience I was a solo diner and was made to feel very welcome and given a good table in the main body of the busy restaurant, which on a Saturday evening was quite refreshing . All in all i would definitely recommmend Carpe Diem for a very friendly relaxed dining experience.

“Great tapas and service”

Reviewed 13 January 2014 Visited old town Benidorm for a week in January and spent several evenings in Carpe Diem. Service was excellent, beer served in iced glasses, cava not expensive. Always had a few tapas as lots of locals were doing . Lots of choice and constantly kept fresh and renewed. Enjoyed the Pa ‘n’ tomate [toast with tomato pulp and garlic] and the potatas bravas.

“Best mojitos in benidorm.”

Reviewed 6 January 2014 On a very busy street with outdoor tables.very spanish style food but in a beautiful old building.even though it was january we still sat out.mojitos are wonderful.

“Favourite bar”

Reviewed 3 November 2013 love this place. the staff are friendly and you can always guarantee a lovely pint of beer. I miss seeing the man with the dodgey music box! he was really bad but it always made me laugh seeing him.

“Tapas in the park”

Reviewed 21 September 2013 We were walking around town on a Sunday afternoon and stopped here for lunch. Very nice tapas and lots of locals. We had the croquetas and they were delicious. Good place to relax after too much walking.

Two Palms Restaurant C/ La Palma 30, Benidorm

“70th Birthday”

Reviewed 28 February 2014 Nine friends, and myself, Tricia and my husband Neil celebrated my 70th birthday on the 13th February, 2014. Banners, balloons etc. food out of this world, service excellent as usual. Friends provided the cake. Wonderful time had by all and the best restaurant in Benidorm, cheers and thanks john!

“That extra something”

Reviewed 27 February 2014 Just returned home after a 10 week stay. I ate at Two Palms on numerous occasions and every one was fab. There are other restaurants in the street who provide excellent quality but this place has something more. The décor , the ambiance, the quality of the food, the price and John and his team were 5 star.

“Eat here 5 nights out of 7!”

Reviewed 27 February 2014 We just love Two Palms. The food is brilliant and service is excellent. I highly recommend it. IT was full every night we were in.

“Outstanding food value and service”

Reviewed 26 February 2014 We have been to this restaurant 3 times now and each time was better than the last, the food is absolutely fabulous as was the service and value for money

“What Great Food & Value For money”

A small but very intimate restaurant, situated in the Old Town, Benidorm. Very well run by English owners and staff. The four course meal we had for 9.95 euro was simply one of the best meals I have had for a long time. Home made tomato soup, followed by mussels ( out of the shell ) in a lovely creamy wine sauce. Pork loin in an apple and cider sauce - The pork was just so tender, it sliced like butter. And then to top it all off, a ‘ to die for’ chocolate and mint cheesecake....My wife started with melon served with ground ginger, then also the mussels. Please note, reservations are a must !....Enjoy your meal :-)

Le Boulevard C/ Ruperto Chapi 12. El Albir

“WOW! Enjoyed and Excellent”

Reviewed 3 January 2014 Just loved this place and Severin’s food concept. This was our (wife and I) first visit on Xmas Day, so we took a risk, but we trusted the other great reviews on Trip Advisor. From meeting to seating to eating - they put not a foot wrong. The place was full, the staff attentive and of course the food was simply excellent. The chef told us we would not be disappointed and indeed we were not. We loved all 5 dishes we had + starter dips. The house wine was very good (we had a bottle each). There is no ‘menu’ as such - the concept is the very skilled and passionate chef cooks seasonal and changes daily - (perhaps not to everyone’s fancy) but as we love most things we enjoyed the surprise, presentation and taste of all our dishes. The Chef Sevrin is very attentive and explains his dishes as they are served. We had: Duck Confit with Figs | Cocktail of roasted pumpkin.parsnips and goats cheese | Lobster cappuccino + pan fried scallops | Veal medallions + morils | 4 mini desserts (creme brulee, tiramisu ice, vanilla cream, strawberry macaroon INCREDIBLY presented and so tasty... theLobster Cappuccino was delicious! Highly recommended!

“Michelin Star Standard!”

Reviewed 22 December 2013 A real personalized dining experience! FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIENCE - this restaurant has it all in abundance... My husband and I found this restaurant through Trip Advisor - so thank you Trip Advisor! The owner of this delightful restaurant met us at the door and from the very first moment made us feel most welcome and indulged us in explaining every morsel of the Chefs Menu of the day. With aperitifs, tasters & sorbet in addition to the traditional three courses with half a bottle of wine per person this was excellent value for money at 29,50 per head. If you are searching for some fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere then this place makes Albir a must visit.

Shopping & Style THE NEW LUNCHTIME LIFTS

Feeling not so fabulous under the office fluorescents? These fast face fixers promise to give you a youthful new look in an hour. Consider it a lunch date. LING ENERGY LIFT FACIAL Just sitting in New York's zen Ling New York spa and drinking green tea for an hour could probably take a few stress lines off your face, but owner Ling Chan claims a lot more with her new Energy Lift therapy. Combining far-infrared light, heat, and acupressure, the treatment begins with 20 minutes of heat therapy on your back, neck, and shoulders. Chan's "heat machine" is embedded with tourmaline crystals that emit far-infrared rays. As you lie facedown on the treatment table, Chan runs the hand piece over your back. It feels like a hot stone massage, sans sticky oil. Chinese medicine practitioners believe that far-infrared energy is the

same frequency as our chi; consequently, the treatment promises to increase energy, oxygenate the blood, and detoxify. In any case, studies have shown that the rays reduce aches and pains as well as boost long-term collagen and elastin production. Next is the facial, which includes a glycolic peel, a massage, and multiple masks. After applying her Apple Stem Cellular Energy serum and DNA DoNotAge Cellular Youth Extension cream, Chan performs her signature acupressure technique with the far-infrared device, leading to a (temporary) lift, a healthy flush, and plumped-up wrinkles. "Most of my clients look at least five years younger," says Chan. VOLUMA FILLER INJECTIONS Though it's not a procedure to be taken lightly, facial filling by a skilled cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon can make a dramatic change in minutes, reversing the sagging, hollow look that slowly descends after 40 (sigh). Voluma, the newest filler, is made of hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar that attracts and holds water. It's a favorite because it can fill and lift. If done correctly, "people can expect to see lifting of the face and replenishment of youthful contours such as cheekbones, jawlines, chins, and temples," explains Fredric Brandt, a New York and Miami dermatologist. Think of it as a thicker Juvéderm or Restylane, meaning that it gives that much more "fill" and a "high lifting capacity," notes Brandt, who says results "can last up to two years." Although serious side effects are rare, bruising and swelling are possible. Your doctor will evaluate your face and determine the best places to inject. "On certain areas you can place the filler under the muscle, which will add volume but also give a more contoured and structural effect." (Hello, cheekbones!) But research

your doctor well, cautions Brandt. "The filler is only part of the equation. The technique in which it's used is an equally or more important part of the treatment." LEAF MD IV VITA-INFUSION FACIAL Fancy a cocktail at lunch? This custom blend promises to leave you refreshed and energized—and we're not talking about a short-lived G&T buzz. No need to bother with a glass; at Leaf MD Skin Care Clinic in Beverly Hills, cocktails are mainlined. Yes, delivered through an IV. And rather than alcohol, the cocktail is a high-potency-vitamin mixture: vitamins B12, B5, B6, B9, and C, as well as calcium, magnesium, and the über antioxidant glutathione. As you absorb your cocktail, you enjoy a luxurious facial. Appointments start with a consultation about how you're feeling. Tired? Jet-lagged? Flu-ish? A registered nurse mixes your blend and sets you up with an IV while you're comfortably lying down in aesthetician Maya Zeineddine's treatment room. Zeineddine performs a personalized facial as the IV sends the vitamins directly into your bloodstream, says Caroline Alexander, practice director for Leaf MD. "Some people feel energized immediately, or sometimes it happens a couple of hours later. You just feel really good." Adds Zeineddine: "After one treatment your skin looks great. After two or three, you will definitely see a difference in your hair and nails too."

Saltitos This lovely dog has been in Benidorm pound for 4 years and has recently become severely depressed. His legs have swollen and we are getting him urgent veterinary care. His pen is small and with only 1 short walk a day it is most likely this lack of exercise that is causing his current poor health and depression. Now he needs a foster home to help him recover and to give him love. He is timid and likes other dogs company when he goes for a walk. At the moment he is refusing to leave his pen and he needs time and care to help him. When in a foster home he will then have much more chance of finding his forever home. Will you help? U3A MARINA BAIXA PICNIC - VILLA GADEA

The sun was shining so the sudden drop in temperature was no deterrent to the hardy U3A Marina Baixa picnic group in February. Donning boots, coats & scarves they met at Villa Gadea picnic area for their monthly get together. Taking the N332 through Altea to the Villa Gadea Hotel the picnic area is at the side of what must be the most beautiful location for the Altea local police. This is the most northern location used for the picnics with beautiful views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Bernia. Tables erected it was predominantly flasks of hot soup the favorite food, but as an extra treat Hazel Layt had baked a cake and Liz Parker produced mince pies! The group enjoyed a pleasant distraction being entertained by a red squirrel scampering up the Palm and Olive trees. Elaine Mitchell took over leadership of this popular group in November 2011 and it continues to thrive. It is not unusual to have over 30 members in attendance especially as the weather becomes more settled. Every month Elaine prepares a quiz, often topical – no prizes, so no pressure! Just good fun and invariable causing some amusement! After the quiz Elaine entertains the group with a poem or a recitation that is normally very humorous. The group gathers on the 2nd.Tuesday of every month. The venues are varied to ensure the same members are not always travelling from one side of the catchment area to the other and also depending on whether shade from the sun is needed or not ! From October through to May the group enjoy afternoon picnics and meet at 1.30pm but for pleasant evening picnics from June to September the time changes to 6pm. A favorite summer venue is Playa de Torres near Villajoyosa, with the Eucalyptus trees offering shade. Many of the popular picnic areas are suggested by the members, the most central for most is the Eucalyptus Park in Albir and the Scandinavian Park in Alfaz del Pi. A very popular summer picnic location is the picturesque Amadorio Resevoir near Orcheta. On Tuesday 11th.March the picnic will be Parc Font de la Favara, La Nucia on the CV715 at 1.30pm. MARCH ISSUE No.1/ 4th-10th March 2014 (#21)

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

It’s definitely your time to shine as the week begins. While sometimes haste makes waste, the more you do now, the merrier you are, and those around you are pretty pleased, too. Then, around Wednesday and Thursday, money or the things it can get you might be on your mind. Don’t forget the virtues of simple goodness — less really can be more (like less stress, for instance). Watch out for jumping ahead this weekend. You’re thinking fast, which is great, but if anything serious is at stake, you’ll want to change your pace.

CANCER

You’re always an emotional creature, but the strength (and maybe the rapid changeability!) of your feelings might surprise even you at the beginning of the week. Think about what to keep to yourself. If you’re thinking about a date or fun with friends, Wednesday and Thursday are your best days to be a total charmer and have a great time. Consider cozy at-home social time instead of going out. If you’re going back and forth about something, the rest of the week brings an opportunity to get off the fence — and make a splash while you do it.

LIBRA

TAURUS

You’re liable to do something rash as the week begins. If it’s in the career department, consult with someone first; when it comes to love, though, go for it. Why not? Let your heart have its way! You can set the stage for some especially sweet stuff around Wednesday and Thursday, when you’re both rock-solid and you possess a kind of magical appeal people can’t quite put their finger on. For the remainder of the week, apply your natural determination to observing all that’s around you- especially the interpersonal element. Something interesting’s afoot!

LEO

Your go-getter attitude and assertiveness as the week begins can take you places. Be logical instead of getting into dramatics. Put something unusual in your organized plan around Wednesday and Thursday, and allow extra time for truly absorbing it. Whether you’re learning something new or hanging out with someone great, it’s time well spent. Things really can go either way for the rest of the week, but luckily you’re in control. If you feel anxious, examine why; get exercise for good energy; and plan a nice little treat for yourself (and maybe for someone sweet!).

SCORPIO

Pay particular attention to a tete-a-tete or heart-to-heart you have as the week begins. The stars are sending an opportunity for improved interpersonal stuff, but things could also go sour if you’re not careful. Around Wednesday and Thursday, you’ve got the magic touch, putting people at ease and skillfully working through any issues in ways that benefit everyone. Plus you’re just plain hot! When the weekend comes, your energy’s not so much about tackling tons of projects and getting stuff done as it is about sharing your feelings and quietly enjoying life.

How are you feeling at the beginning of the week? Tune into the signals your body is sending, as well as your emotional state, and be proactive about maintaining good physical and psychological health. Around Wednesday and Thursday, someone’s got an advantage over you, which is rare! Can you avoid discord and create an alliance here? Then, over the next few days, any financial matters that involve others work budgets, joint accounts, even a loan for lunch - could quickly get problematic. Be very clear about terms, and get on the same page about expectations.

Expect a delay or postponement as the week begins. Even if it’s you that’s pushing a deadline or promising someone a rain check, it might be frustrating to feel like you’re not keeping pace. But with all of your awesome powers augmented around Wednesday and Thursday, you can catch up and then some. Open yourself to your imagination; it’s got an alternative that’ll make you look like a genius. Everything and everyone’s all over the place this weekend, but you can depend on your own instincts and be the eye of the storm. People are definitely coming to you now.

You aren’t like everybody else, so why try to blend in as the week begins? Showing your independent side — your imagination, your own style, your bright and unique ideas — gets you major gold stars now, at work and off the clock. Then, around Wednesday and Thursday, you may be dragging, with mundane stuff getting you down. But something funny’s afoot, and if you notice it, your interest will be renewed. And when it comes to renewed interest, your energy this weekend is definitely sparking exactly that. Light a fire under your social or love life!

Be the one to make the first move at the beginning of the week. It’s a ‘you snooze, you lose’ time for you, so set the alarm a little early, beat a work deadline and tell someone how you feel! Then, if there’s conflict in some sphere of your life around Wednesday and Thursday, don’t avoid it. Unsure how to proceed? Find someone who’s handled something similar in a way you admire, and just ask. Over the next few days, your always-abundant interpersonal skills are even better than ever, and everything that’s wonderful about you is even more so.

VIRGO

Your go-getter attitude and assertiveness as the week begins can take you places. Be logical instead of getting into dramatics. Put something unusual in your organized plan around Wednesday and Thursday, and allow extra time for truly absorbing it. Whether you’re learning something new or hanging out with someone great, it’s time well spent. Things really can go either way for the rest of the week, but luckily you’re in control. If you feel anxious, examine why; get exercise for good energy; and plan a nice little treat for yourself (and maybe for someone sweet!).

SAGITTARIUS

Life looks fun - and you look great! - as the week begins. Anything creative you attempt ought to go especially well (and don’t forget the creative element of any romantic endeavors!). Then, around Wednesday and Thursday, the universe is directing your attention to seeing both the grand scale and some particularly pertinent microelements. Yes, you want to think big, but look closely, too. The energy for you is unusual this weekend, which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s negative. In fact, lots of positive movement can happen now. Just be sure you put that slant on your dealings with others.

PISCES

Pick up a good book or see a great movie at the beginning of the week. Your imagination’s active now, and if you don’t give it something to chew on, you might find fantasy mixing in with reality. Then, gosh, you’re warm and wonderful around Wednesday and Thursday. Hanging out with friends (or, better yet, a ‘more than friend’) makes for beautiful bonding. When the weekend comes, plenty of choices present themselves; getting another opinion can help you decide. Then again, not deciding and following your nose can lead to some sweet places, especially on Sunday.

It does seem as though the advent of new smartphones continue to be a crowd puller every single year, no doubt about that. The iPhone kicked it off all the way back in 2007, and since then, we have seen our fair share of smartphone releases from various hardware manufacturers. The Samsung Galaxy S series really made its mark with the introduction of the Galaxy S2, and hence, it is not surprising to see the Galaxy S line go all the way to the Galaxy S5 now, where it has been designed for what matters most to consumers. It is said that the new Galaxy S5, unveield at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, Spain, will offer consumers a refined experience with innovation of essential features for day-to-day use. Just what kind of goodies can one expect to arrive from the Samsung Galaxy S5? Well for starters, it will arrive with a new 16-megapixel camera at the back that boasts of an enhanced menu and user interface which would enable consumers to effortlessly take, edit

Ronnie O'Sullivan wins Welsh Open with record-breaking 147 World champion Ronnie O’Sullivan made a record 12th 147 maximum break to beat Ding Junhui 9-3 and win the BetVictor Welsh Open and he even rounded the match off in the ultimate style with a maximum, playing to the crowd as he switched to his left hand to sink the final black. The magical moment brought the house down at the Newport Centre and took the Rocket clear of seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry, who made 11 maximum breaks. O’Sullivan, 38, who will be going for a sixth world crown next month, pocketed the £60,000 first prize and become the first British player to win a ranking event this term. He also grabbed a £12,000 bonus for his superb clearance in the final frame, which saw him pot the final black lefthanded. O’Sullivan said: “I thought it

was on from about 48 and it is nice to nick one of Stephen Hendry’s records. I am playing near my best. “This tournament may be moving to Cardiff next year, so it was nice to give the fans here something to remember.”

The Festival concludes with the climax of the entire Jump racing season it’s the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, the highlight of arguably the best day’s racing of the year, with an atmosphere to match. Bobs Worth took the crown in 2013 ahead of stable mate Long Run, with six other magical races also on the card for Friday March 14. Two more Grade 1 events and three fiercely competitive handicaps are included, making it a day to remember.

MARCH ISSUE No.1/ 4th-10th March 2014 (#21)

Six Nations Preview As the RBS Six Nations reaches its penultimate

fixtures, it's all to play for at the top of the table. Ireland, England, Wales and France all sit level on four points in an exhilarating tournament which could still be won by fifth-placed Scotland. Italy remain rooted to the foot of the table without a single point; however, a final-day match against England could still see the side play a pivotal role in this year's competition. Wales face the prospect of winning the Six Nations for a record third time in succession, but this week's match against an in-form England could make or break their chances of title retention. The Six Nations champions face their arch rivals at Twickenham on Sunday for the first time since demolishing them 30-3 in last season's title decider. Wood admits England were left "shell-shocked" by their heaviest ever defeat in a fixture which dates back to 1881. A six-point loss and they would have been champions.

Ireland v Italy After Ireland's 13-10 defeat by England in Round 3, the onus is on the hosts to get back to winning ways if they are to keep their place at the top of the table: England v Wales Both sides recorded victories last time out, and England will be looking to make it two wins on the bounce at Twickenham as Wales come to town. Scotland v France After the last-minute win against Italy, Scotland coach Scott Johnson must keep his side's feet firmly on the ground if they're to record a win against France.

FA Welcome NEW LEAGUE

Discussions about a new competition which is set to feature all 54 UEFA member nations competing across nine divisions over a two-year period are believed to be at an advanced stage. The tournament is expected to see teams promoted and relegated with semi-finals and a final being played, as well as prize money and wildcard places at Euro 2020 at stake. Good Week Hamilton, Mercedes on top as testing ends

Lewis Hamilton returned Mercedes to the top of the times while Red Bull’s struggles continued during the final pre-season Formula 1 test of 2014 in Bahrain. After three tests in which Red Bull have floundered, perhaps more so than any other reigning champions for a long time, and Mercedes have hammered in the laps – quick ones too – it is hard to leave the desert with any conclusion other than that Mercedes are at the very least favourites. The guesswork will be over in 13 days in Australia, but Mercedes were the first on track in Jerez, and finished in Bahrain with more mileage than any other team under their belt.

Alan Pardew gets £100k fine

Newcastle have hit manager Alan Pardew with a formal warning and a £100,000 fine after he appeared to headbutt Hull midfielder David Meyler in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League match at the KC Stadium. On Sunday night FA insiders were not ruling out a stadium ban that could run for at least six games, and possibly even as many as 10, which would keep him away from Newcastle games for the rest of the season.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE There was low scoring Week in the Fantasy mainly because 4 Teams were not involved in the Premier League which gave us a low 17 point average. In the 8 Premier League games & the 1 F.A.Cup Replay which did take place they provided the Fantasy with 25 goals,4 clean sheets,30 yellow cards and 1 red which was shown to Swansea’s Flores Chico for a clumsy tackle on Palace’s Murray. There was no changes at the top of the Fantasy League with Abby Brigade,Charlie’s Chico’s and Little Hulton Albion all staying at One Two Three in that order. Micky’s Woodside moved up 1 place to 4th and they are only a few points behind the Leaders. Down at the foot of the Table Heidi’s Team Pot Luckers are looking a good bet to pick up the Wooden Spoon as they now are 35 points behind Ben’s Boys. Not much to report on our Junior League where Abby Brigade have a strangle hold at the top over Rocky’s Mini Spurs while at the bottom Ben’s Boys go from bad to worse as they trail Jack’s Bubble Jack 8 F.C. by 99 points. Charlie’s Chico’s are making a fist of it as they have remained top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section for 6 weeks now her nearest challenger is Laiks Loonies who have moved into 2nd place and are just 37 points behind the high flying Chico’s. Pot Luckers stay rooted at the foot of the Table and they have now fell further behind Kim & Rachel’s Team El.Nui Baddies. Top Manager this week in this Section is Rachel with

her Team El.Nui F.C. who collected a very creditable 46 points thanks mainly through Aston Villa’s Striker Benteke who slotted home a couple of goals in Villa’s excellent 4-1 win against Norwich. Rachel has now qualified for a stake on our Cellar Bar Cert Tip selected by Ian Charman who was among the Black Cats at Wembley last Sunday.(Unlucky Ian). The Golden Boot League sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction is still being dominated by Abby Brigade although this week 2nd placed Woodside did manage to move a little closer but there still a lot to pull back.At the other end of the Table Stuart’s Team Beach Terrace Boys left Alan’s Team Wangies All Stars trailing in their wake as they moved 10 points above them. Last Month’s Winner of our Premier Imports Draw for a case of fine Wine went to Michael’s Team Longs Way To Go.The 2 Teams going into the Draw this Week is Brian’s Stretford Enders with a highest score of 51 points and lowest scoring Team which was Gary’s Blue Moon F.C. who finished up with a minus 1. Rachel at the El.Nui in Alfaz is our new sponsor for Manager of the Month for March. The El.Nui provide the best Fish & Chips in the Area as well other fine dishes. At the moment with 1 week gone Brian’s Stretford Enders are in pole position 1 point infront of John’s Team Dodgy Dribblers.Boshy’s Beasts and El.Nui F.C. are nicely placed in 3rd & 4rh spot.

Luis Suarez did have a £40m buy-out clause Liverpool owner John Henry confirms Luis Suarez did have a £40m buy-out clause in his last contract Liverpool owner John Henry has confirmed Luis Suarez did have a £40m buy-out clause in his last

contract, but the club decided they would hold on to the striker at all costs. The Gunners famously made an offer of just one pound over £40m in the summer in the hope of activating the Uruguayan’s clause, but Henry says Liverpool weren’t prepared to give up their star asset that easily. At the time Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola accepted there had been confusion over what the clause meant as Liverpool insisted they merely had to inform the 27-year-old of bids in excess of £40m. Henry, speaking at the Sloan Sports Analytics conference in America, suggested there was slightly more to it than that “Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the English Premier League which is arguably the top soccer league in the world, he had a buy-out clause - I don’t know what degree I should go into this but he had a buy-out clause of £40m. So Arsenal, one of our prime rivals this year, they offered £40m and one pound for him and triggered his buy-out clause.” Henry continued to reflect on the situation by saying, “But what we’ve found over the years is that contracts don’t seem to mean a lot in England - actually not in England, in world football. It doesn’t matter how long a player’s contract is, he can decide he’s leaving. We sold Fernando Torres for £50m. We didn’t want to sell but we were forced to. For the first time (with Suarez) we took the position that we weren’t selling.”

Oscar Pistorius'

murder begins The trial of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius begins

in Pretoria yesterday. Pistorius has won six Paralympic

golds, including two at the 2012 London Games, during an illustrious athletic career. But he now faces trial for the murder of his girlfriend; model Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day last year. Double amputee Pistorius, dubbed the "Blade Runner", shot Ms Steenkamp dead at his home but claims he thought she was an intruder. The trial, at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, is expected to hear from more than 100 witnesses, including neighbours and ex-girlfriends of the 27-year-old athlete. Much of the trial will be broadcast live and with media coverage at frenzied levels, however testimony from Pistorius will not be shown. Pistorius is accused of the premeditated murder of 29-year-old Ms Steenkamp, who died of multiple gunshot wounds. Prosecutors allege he shot the model and reality TV star four times through the locked bathroom door at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of 14 February 2013. Pistorius claims he thought an intruder had entered his home, but prosecutors say that even so, an "error in persona" did not affect the fact he intended to kill someone. On the anniversary of Ms Steenkamp's death, Pistorius made a statement on his website saying: "No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved - and continues to love Reeva. The mandatory sentence for an individual convicted of premeditated murder in South Africa is life with a minimum of 25 years in prison.
