hello

Hello readers, The words that I am looking for to describe some of the scenes over the weekend are a mixture of WOW INCREDIBLE - FANTASTIC check our facebook page for all pictures for St.Patricks and Fallas. Moving on to this coming week we have Spanish Father’s Day a public holiday on Wednesday 19th so most Spanish places including supermarkets will be closed or will work “Sunday hours” we also have on the same day the burning of the wonderful statues in three locations of Benidorm so follow the information in our “What’s On” (Page 7) to catch a glimpse of this fantastic event. Last week I mentioned how we saw a change in the weather and again this week we are really revelling in the fact that the sun has been shining and the visitors will be returning home with nice glowing colour and quite possibly a few with too much colour, I have already seen some bright red bodies walking around looking rather uncomfortable! Even now the direct sun can burn your skin so always be careful, use precautions, slap on the sun block and don’t get burnt. There was a sea of red shirts at Vincent’s Pubs in the Rincon End of Benidorm on Saturday with the truly loyal Welsh Rugby fans who visit year after year, only this time not so triumphant as last, but what a week for the Irish winning the Six Nations and then having a double celebration together alongside St. Paddy’s Day. If you have any news, event or announcement to make then please call us on 966 800 551 or email buzz@vistacostablanca.com

Have a great week and happy Father’s Day! Marco Baiardo - Editor & Chief marco@vistacostablanca.com

Department of the Urban Scene has given notice until the end of the month for anyone who has any type of object placed on the base or the structure of La Cruz to remove and recover it . It has also been said that if you are unable to recover any objects by the end of March then they “may be obtained from the offices of the municipal warehouse". Besides removing these elements the council will perform weeding, painting and repair of wooden fencing and milestones keeping an adequate picture of this most visited Benidorm symbol The council is also considering ways to restrict vehicle access to the last stretch of the road where you get to La Cruz. QUICK TIPS- Residency Status

Declaring Offshore Assets

A Few Quick Tax Tips - Declaring Offshore Assets. There has been a lot of controversy regarding the change in the law relating to the declaring of assets held offshore (i.e outside Spanish territory) by permanent fiscal residents of Spain. Here are a few simple facts which may help you to know how this law affects you: • Who should declare assets abroad? If you are a fiscal resident of Spain (if you live here for more than 6 months of the year, your primary residence is here, and/or your main income is here. • What should be declared? Any bank account which has more than 50,000€, any property with a value of 50,000€ (100,000€ for a couple) any stocks, shares, dividends and investments of more than 50,000€. BUT NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT FOR ALL THOSE FEARFUL OF THE TAX AUTHORITIES; Although all the above should be included on your tax return, it is important to note that although you are informing the tax authorities of the existence of these assets, you do not have to pay any taxes on these unless all added together they amount to 1,000,000 euros. (PER PERSON) So all you are doing is telling them about it, this does not imply any payment in most cases. Another important point is that under international double taxation laws you cannot be charged tax in two places on the same income/asset. Las Fallas

The Fallas celebrations have been going all weekend, on Saturday the giant Papier-mâché statues (Ninots) were erected in three parts of Benidorm Rincon De Loiz, Plaza Triangular and The Old Town there are even some smaller ones for the children. Around the statues you will find so much going on with stalls selling snacks, beverages and traditional food such as Jamón there is so much to

occasion but nothing in comparison to the festivities in the city of Valencia. The statues are creations of Papiermâché, wood and wax, these figures, called "Ninots" by the Valencians, often represent current affairs often to do with politics a good example of this is the gravestone marked “RIP Canal 9” on the model in the Rincon (The Valencian Government decided to close Canal 9, a Spanish TV Station). The Ninots, half satirical, half symbolical, are created in a style somewhere between comic strips and Walt Disney cartoons. The main part of the festival is “The Crema”, for some it is the saddest moment, while for others it is the high point of the festival. The figures, which represent a whole year's work for hundreds of people, are burnt on the night of March 19th in towering flames, and each bonfire is a temple devoted to this colossal festival of fire. The final day of the festival is what everyone has been waiting for, starting at 6.00pm there is a huge parade with floats along the Avd Mediterraneo it will finish in the Plaza Triangular and at 11.00pm they start by burning of the children’s statues, from here they will burn the big statues in turn. 00:00am Rincon De Loix, (Opposite Burger King) 00.30am Plaza Triangular, (Opposite The Robin Hood) 01.00am Benidorm Old Town, (Calle Tomas Ortuno)

MARCH ISSUE No.3/ 18th-24th March 2014 (#23)

Ready, Steady, Open the doors!!! In recent weeks we have seen that many bars and entertainment venues were closed for refurbishment, some a lick of paint and a spruce up ready for the season and for many others major improvements. The Loch Ness bar has had a complete new frontage opening out onto the street with new signs and a complete re design. The Hotel Marina has had the terrace closed and the main bar area under construction for some weeks. The new bar area designed specifically for entertainment, cabaret and disco opened last Wednesday and has been renamed the “White Star”. The name White Star line is most famous for the ill-fated Titanic cruise liner, and the hotel use to be called "The Titanic" which explains the connection for the name for the new venue. Also ready for the World Cup this year, a huge 10 metre screen has been erected on the side of the pool area, which will be broadcasting all the big matches and major sporting events, this TV screen is the biggest TV screen you will find anywhere to watch the sport outside on a pool terrace.

MARCH ISSUE No.3/ 18th-24th March 2014 (#23)

It’s all you need for a great read.

YORKSHIRE PRIDE

"Food Glorious Food" There is nothing like good old fashioned, “Yorkshire Cooking” and portions fit for a king!! If you have been to the Yorkshire Pride Pubs and if not, you should get down there and taste some of the best home cooking you will find anywhere. If it’s large portions you’re looking for then this is the best place to be. Breakfast, snacks and Seriously "Massive Meals" is what I have seen with my own eyes, I can't say much about the portion size other than what I have said already but “seeing is believing” then here are some photos of my visit so you really can appreciate what I am saying. "Greedy Man's Breakfast" is it a myth, that people have heard about this back in Castleford as well as all over Yorkshire? No it's not "Greedy Man's Breakfast" is actually the biggest and best brekkie that I have ever seen! It doesn’t end there, so is the Biggest Mixed Grill in Benidorm it really does take two of the staff to carry the plate...Well it's not a plate it's a tray and is one of the most popular and most famous meals you will find in Benidorm. Visitors arrive in Spain come to Benidorm specifically because they have been recommended to visit the Yorkshire Pride for great food and hospitality that goes beyond the normal call of duty. When I visited recently the Yorkshire Pride 1 in Calle Gerona for my Sunday lunch and the Super Sunday

Premiership football I was accompanied by my 14 month old son. Not a problem for me to relax and enjoy a high chair was placed next to my table without even having to ask and I was looked after from the start to finish. My son is a little bit how you would say a “cutey” with his big blue eyes and dark hair so he really gets the attention of others around

12

and how great it is for me as an introduction to speak with the holiday makers and visitors. A couple sitting on the next table to me, told me how they had been coming to Benidorm for 20 years and that this was there very first visit to the Yorkshire Pride that particular week and

had been

back every day since. I really couldn't believe it because normally when you speak with people you assume that they would of at some point or another been to eat or drink here on their travels around the town especially

having been visitors for 20 years and also being so famous and on the main strip, but not in this case and as strange as it may seem so it just goes to show there are always new experiences out there for us all as it took this couple 20 years to eventually fall into the hands of the most dedicated staff and fabulous food at the Yorkshire Pride, now there's no stopping them. For me and many others it is the big screens for all the live sport as there is nothing better than a good feed up whilst watching your favourite team.

Hondon and Novelda

This day is all about the scenery of the mountains of Crevillente and the valley of the Hondons, as well as the spectacular sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene overlooking the Vinalope valley. It can be a very leisurely full day, an action packed half day or combined with a stop at the El Hondo Nature Park, a protected area for birds and a registered wetland habitat. Past Albatera you travel through the fertile plains of the Vega Baja, to the start of the ascent over the Sierra de Crevillente which stand at a height of 838m. Slowly wind your way up and over the pass, admiring the stunning views. After driving through Hondon de los Frailes, the first stop is at Hondon de las Nieves. The name has nothing to do with snow but everything to do with the village's loyalty to their patron saint, the 'Virgen de las Nieves' (Virgin of the Snow). This is a quintessential Spanish mountain village. There are lots of little tapas bars and restaurants for you to enjoy as well as the local Bodega to explore with its little museum and shop dedicated to everything to do with wine! Onwards to Novelda, and the Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene and castle of La Mola. This religious building was built by local Novelda based engineer Jose Sala Sala, with work beginning in 1918 and finishing in 1946. The outside is 100% more impressive than the inside. Next door to the sanctuary is the castle of La Mola, built in the late 12th century. You can climb the 11m high tower (take a torch as there are no lights!) for a true feel of the castle.

Places to stop during a day out Hondon and Novelda Albatera: typical Spanish inland town. Hondon de las Nieves: small inland town with famous local Bodega. Novelda Sanctuary & Mola Castle: impressive church and remains of a castle with great views along the Vinalope valley. Albatera Parking: this isn't an actual stop, but you can park and

explore if you wish. From here: this isn't an actual stop, but a drive through so that you approach the Sierras de Crevillent along the correct road - the CV873. Places of interest and things to do in Albatera Town Centre: relatively large sprawling town with good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Hondon de las Nieves From here: for the village centre walk straight on past the traffic lights and pharmacy , for the Bodega Cerda walk in the opposite direction along the road that you've just driven on. Places of interest and things to do in Hondon de las Nieves Village Centre: small village with a beautiful church and a selection of bars and restaurants. Bodega Cerda: local bodega with small museum shop and wine tasting bar, for more information take a look at the official website.

Novelda Sanctuary & Mola Castle Parking: is in the car park and is free, there are toilets here which are unlocked during opening hours. From here: walk around the road up to the sanctuary and remains of the castle. Top tip: If you want to climb up the inside of the castle (at your own risk) then remember to bring a torch! For more information take a look at the official website. Places of interest and things to do at the Novelda Sanctuary & Mola Castle Sanctuary & Castle: the inside of the church and the castle can only be visited during opening hours, but you can wander around the outside at any time. Admire the architecture and views and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. They are open from 10.0014.00 and 17.00-20.00 during the summer and from Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-14.00 and 16.00-19.00 during the winter.

Coco Loco Beach Albir Paseo De Las Estrellas, 1, 03581 El Albir

“Good food but service slow at busy times”

Reviewed 11 March 2014 We lived in Albir and the coco loco was one of our favourites the menus are varied the portions are large and the food is excellent the location of the coco loco is in front of the Albir beach it is a good choice for a place to eat or chill out with glass of wine or a beer However sometimes in the hight of season service can be slow and sometimes the food we got was not what we ordered but hey anyone can make a mistake give it a try

“Nice food service not great”

Reviewed 9 February 2014 Been here a few times lately. The food is nice not out of this world but ok. Portions are huge! I don’t think that’s always a good thing though. Less is more. Location is fabulous right on the beautiful seafront of Albir. The only thing we didn’t think was that good was the service. They were very slow to come take our order and didn’t come back to ask if the food was ok or if we wanted any more drinks (which we did) one of us had to go up to the bar.

“it wins for midday afternoon brunch, snacking, coffee drinking” Reviewed 10 January 2014 Passed many a sunny afternoon here. The atmosphere is great , always busy, I keep coming back more because of where it is and how it is as opposed to the food. Service can be slow, but we are never in a rush when we come here. Food is ok/good, not bad at all, the locals all like it which is always a good yardstick to use. more of an upmarket beach side cafe scene but with better tun cafe food.

Tacasa La Ferreria, 36, 03580 L’Alfas del Pi, Spain

“Don’t let the location put you off...”

Reviewed 11 February 2014 Situated on the main road, there may be traffic and noise but it’s by no means a nuisance. The outdoor seating area is just beautiful, especially at night with the water feature going. The steak a la barbacoa is very good (better than a la plancha!) and the homemade desserts are to die for. We went here three times in the space of a fortnight while holidaying in August - I had the flan all three times; amazing! Staff were good, although at busier periods, not as attentive.

“Welcome return”

Reviewed 1 December 2013 I previously visited this restaurant on Valentines night 1994 with my now wife and we had a super evening. A friend suggested that we visited a typically Spanish restaurant and were delighted to find which it was. Enough of my rambling! We did not book a table and although the place was extremely busy, since it was lunch time, we were advised that a table would be made ready within a few minutes and shown to the bar where we were provided with a drink and tapas. The majority of the diners were Spanish, always a good sign to find that the locals patronise the place Once at the table we were provided with the menus, both del dia and a la carte. Choices were varied and catered for all tastes. However we chose from the menu del dia which was three courses including bread and wine. Service was excellent and the meals well presented. We all chose different dishes and none of us had a cause for complaint. I had the onion soup, excellent, and solomillo of pork in a delicious sauce. The total cost was reasonable for the quality and quantity. We shall not leave it another 20 years before. I would highly recommend Tacasa to anyone wanting a touch of Spain

Coach and Horses c/ san pedro 26, 03500 Benidorm, Spain

“Advertised as British, But Spanish Run” Reviewed 6 March 2014

Despite the title - it’s a nice place, friendly and always seems to be popular and busy. they do pub food at reasonable prices and quite spacious inside as well as having a nice terrace overlooking the Pointente beach.

“A great bar overlooking the sea”

Reviewed 6 February 2014 Been going here for over 30 years both winter and summer and its well worth a visit. The family make you very welcome and the drinks are a fair price. Eating is to be recommended my favourite is the breakfast but everything is good

“Service”

Reviewed 20 January 2014 We get great service here the staff are so welcoming the food is great we can’t fault it at all we go there all the time.

“A Nice Chill-out Restaurant / Bar”

Reviewed 19 January 2014 We visited the Coach & Horses in a previous trip to Benidorm, and we thought we would come back to see if it was still a good place to hang out on our recent visit. I think we ended up stopping by here every day whilst we were here. It’s a great little sun trap and well sheltered. We always had a bite to eat and a Jug of Sangria.. or two.

“Execlent food we’ll cooked especialy the calamaries just right”

Reviewed 14 December 2013 Always used this bar mainly in the evenings have had fantastic times spent many birthdays don’t walk pass pop in give it a try all staff are very friendly and give you a big welcome as others have said great sun trap I should know being a sun worshiper you will never know if you don’t give it a try so next time pop in and experience the welcome for for self.

PROTEST RALLY ON SATURDAY THE 12th OF APRIL

There will be a "Protest Rally" on Saturday 12th of April, starting at 12 Noon at the Plaza Of Benidorms Town Hall, the protest rally has been set to demand tougher laws and and punishments for criminal acts and improved conditions for the police service.

It has been almost a year now since the British traders of the Indoor Market in Benidorm created the British Benidorm group and started denouncing in the media and on their Facebook page the criminal acts occurring in Benidorm as well as other situations that are not considered a crime in Spanish law that we believe have a negative influence on our livelihoods. For the past month they have been extremely busy setting up what has been called the “PLATAFORMA CIUDADANA BENIDORM 2014” (People’s platform Benidorm 2014) together with S.U.P. (the major National Police Union) and other associations of neighbours from Benidorm. The S.U.P. union has taken notice of all the demands of the people of Benidorm and believes it’s time to take some action and show the local politicians that this is not the correct way to proceed. As well as the people’s demands for better security and the other problems that affect the lives of people in Benidorm, the police union believes that to give an improved service a better police station is needed. All policing duties should be done under one roof thereby making the

service given to residents and tourists more efficient and enabling the police to use their time more effectively. At the moment not only is the main police station in obsolete condition, but also the services that the national police gives to citizens is divided in various buildings around town that are rented. Not only is this a big expense to the taxpayer, but also is an inconvenience as the distance between one building and another is miles away. For these reasons mentioned the People’s Platform Benidorm 2014 has been formed and a formal letter has been sent to the “Subdelegado de Gobierno de Alicante” (Subdelegate of the Government in Alicante – The representative of the Government in the Alicante province) asking that he meets with the representatives of this Civil Group so that the problems can be prersented to him along with the possible solutions. Finally everyone will have a chance to get their voice heard everyone is invited to attend this very important rally on the 12th of April.

CHEERS!

Downing a glass of beer could be good for you, especially if you suffer from high blood pressure. That’s the view of a group of Spanish medical experts who say that supping some booze in moderation ought to be part of a low-salt diet for adults who need to bring down their high blood pressure. The health benefits surround beer having potassium with the doctors defining moderate consumption as one and two Cañas a day for women and two to three Cañas or a pint and a half for men

ASK the Optician: How does my diet affect my eyes? By Claus Weger from Specsavers Opticas Calpe

The saying “You are what you eat” applies to so many areas of our health and wellbeing and it can even help protect your eyes. This month I wanted to deal with this important topic and offer advice on foods for good vision. Q. How can my diet help my eyes? A. Research conducted by America’s National Institutes of Health found that a type of antioxidant known as carotenoids may protect against macular degeneration and revealed that people eating the highest amounts of carotenoids have a 43% lower risk of developing macular degeneration. Studies have also shown that people with higher than average intakes of antioxidants – beta-carotene, lutein and vitamins C and E – also appear to have a reduced risk of developing cataracts.

Trend-wise, the Primark SS14 collection boasts cute pastels and plenty of prints, from dainty polka dots to fierce aztec designs, assuring us that this high street brand has well and truly secured itself on the fashion map. Not that we really had any doubt... Primark has joined the likes of Zara and Whistles when it comes to winning our hearts in the affordable fashion stakes, which means we're just as excited about previewing the full collection. Check out the best bits from Primark spring/summer 2014 right through to the latest high summer drops and start prepping your guilt-free new-season wardrobe now.

Q. What are the best foods to eat for my eyes? A. Carrots – It’s true that these can help you see in the dark as they are high in beta-carotene, which the body can convert to vitamin A and lead to better night-vision. Dark green leafy vegetables contain beta-carotene and vitamin C which can help slow cataract progression. Peppers contain lutein that scientists believe protects the sensitive retina from light-induced oxidation damage and may be responsible for reversing macular degeneration in very early stages. Sardines and Nuts contain Zinc and vitamin E. Zinc is beneficial for wound healing and maintaining the immune system. Studies suggest that vitamin E can protect against cataracts. PREVENTING GOUT

• Drinking too much beer and /or spirits – these types of alcoholic drinks contain relatively high levels of purines. There are two main goals in treating gout: • Relief of symptoms during an attack of gout • Prevention of future gout attacks Complications of gout are uncommon but can include permanent joint damage caused by ongoing joint inflammation if gout remains untreated for many years. Anyone suffering gout should seek help from their family doctor. Gout is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a waste product made in the body every day and excreted mainly via the kidneys. It forms when the body breaks down chemicals in the cells known as purines. If you produce too much uric acid or excrete too little when you urinate, the uric acid builds up and may cause tiny crystals to form in and around joints. These hard, needle-shaped crystals build up slowly over several years. The most common symptom is sudden and severe pain in the joint, along with swelling and redness. The joint of the big toe is usually affected, but it can develop in any joint. Symptoms can develop rapidly and attacks usually last for 3-10 days. After this time, the joint will start to feel normal again and any pain or discomfort should

eventually disappear completely. Most people with gout will have further attacks in the future. Factors which increase your risk of gout include: • Age and gender - gout is more common when you get older and is 3-4 times more likely in men • Being overweight or obese • Having high blood pressure and / or diabetes • Having first degree relatives with gout (gout often runs in families) • Having long-term kidney problems, that reduce the elimination of uric acid • A diet rich in purines; such as frequently eating sardines and liver

BBC One from 11.35pm to 2.00am Friday 21 March 8.00pm-11.00pm BBC ONE and BBC ONE HD 11.00pm-11.40pm BBC TWO and BBC TWO HD 11.35pm-2.00am BBC ONE and BBC ONE HD BECKHAM IN PECKHAM David Beckham joins Del Boy and Rodney for a special Sport Relief sketch that will be shown as part of a star-studded night of Sport Relief TV on Friday 21st March. David Beckham, 38, will join David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst on Friday March 21 on BBC1, as the much-loved comedy is back for the first time in over a decade. Beckham, who has been pictured on set, in the market, wearing a baseball cap and glasses, said that he could 'die a happy man' after filming the Peckham-set sketch. 'I'm a huge fan of the show. I have been for many years, as far back as I can remember,' he said. 'Being from the East End of London, it's what I was brought up on.' It has been written by Jim and Dan Sullivan, sons of John Sullivan, who used some of their dad’s old notes and

unused lines from scripts to ensure the dialogue was right. In an interview with Radio Times, Jim added: 'When he first read the script he was a bit surprised to have been given so much dialogue and was nervous, understandably, about having to act alongside David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst, but he had no reason to be because his acting and delivery were very good,' he said. 'It was lovely to meet him and hear him talk about his favourite episodes and scenes and how his son, Brooklyn, is now also a fan.' He insisted that the sketch was a one-off and that there would be no new series, adding: 'We very much appreciate the passionate and loyal fan base that the show has, and in a perfect world there would be more episodes, but there was only ever one writer of Only Fools and Horses, and without him, there can be no more.' He added that 'as soon as the camera started rolling, David and Nick slipped back into character and it was as though Del and Rodney had never been away.' Sullivan and his brother Dan had written Roger LloydPack into the sketch to return to his much-loved role as the gormless Trigger, before learning that the actor was very unwell. The star, who had pancreatic cancer, died, aged 69, in January. 'We had originally written Trigger into the sketch and Roger was supportive of the whole thing,' Sullivan, who wrote episodes of Only Fools spin-off The Green Green Grass, said. We had heard that he had been unwell, but had no idea how serious it was. It wasn't until shortly before filming that we heard he was too poorly to perform, such was his eagerness to be

involved - a true testament to his

character.' The short film during the broadcast on Friday March 21, so don't miss out, tune into BBC1 from 8.00pm Please be aware all times given are local time (Spain GMT+1)

Dog of the week Titanium

You can call me Titan for short. I'm not super strong its more because of my lovely coat. I came into Benidorm Pound in January and I was put into a small pen, so small that I could not even wag my tail without hurting it! I wagged so hard when I saw people coming to give me a walk that I hurt my tail and I have lost just the tip of it. I was lucky because they moved me into a pen with other dogs and I love having company. The best thing is when the volunteers come and take me into the park for a free run. I love chasing balls and the more you throw, well the better for me as I will run and run till I'm exhausted and need a siesta. I will be a bit shy with you at first as I am still not sure about humans, so give me a chance, throw me a lifeline and you will get a great dog. I promise to love you and be loyal to you as I'm learning this every time a volunteer comes to give me a walk. You can help dogs like Titanium who need their trust in people to be restored. We need dog walkers every Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm. If you can bring a good dog lead and chain with you then that is brilliant. There is always a lead volunteer who will help you and show you what needs to be done. To rescue Titanium call Maria 677 373 396. You can also help by joining our Facebook page and looking at all our dogs who need homes, by joining you will be sharing them and it all helps in home finding. Facebook Benidorm Dog Homing.

U3A MARINA BAIXA - FIELD TRIP TO THE SWEET FESTIVAL IN ALICANTE

On Saturday 15th.March nine members of the U3A Marina Baixa sugarcraft group enjoyed a field trip to the third exhibition of the Sweet Festival at the Recita Ferrial in Alicante. Amazing cake creations of miniature Fallas were displayed in the Exhibition Hall for the cake decorating competition, many to rival the Fallas ninots. The exhibition was smaller this year with 20 exhibitors, but each providing outstanding displays of their craft. This is the second annual visit by the group who hoped to replenish materials needed for their hobby of sugarcraft which are difficult to obtain in Spain. Products required had been carefully listed but the outstanding displays in the exhibition offered a limited range of sugarcraft materials to purchase. Many of the items still need to be brought back by members of the group on their visits to England or by mail order. The ladies were not deterred, they returned to their cars with bags of purchases acquired having enjoyed a wonderful day and with many new ideas for forthcoming projects. The Marina Baixa sugarcraft group meetings are held every Wednesday from 12.30pm – 3.00pm at the Social Centre Albir. New members are welcome to come and see the creative work of this group. The U3A is an association that fosters cultural, intellectual and recreational interests by promoting the sharing of members´ knowledge and experiences through social and other activities. The annual membership fee of €12.00 enables members to participate in any or all of the groups. The member is responsible for the purchase of any equipment or materials needed. For more information visit the website – www.u3amarinabaixa.com Facebook page – U3A Marina Baixa. MARCH ISSUE No.3/ 18th-24th March 2014 (#23)

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

Look out for your fellow humans as the week begins and all will go well. On Monday and Tuesday, you may need to curb your natural competitiveness (and use your ample charms instead) to get ahead. On Wednesday and Thursday, you’re lost in your own thoughts -and they’re not all pleasant, unfortunately. Expect to butt heads if you put those cranky notions into action. (Or better yet, just lay low for now.) On Friday and Saturday, you’re back to your optimistic, outgoing self, so seek out some adventure. On Sunday, trust your abilities.

CANCER

Watch for troubles on the home front as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday could both bring domestic conflicts, but a little empathy on your part could go a long way. By Wednesday and Thursday, emotions are running high. That can lead to excitement in romance and relationships — but amped-up emotions spell nothing but trouble for any financial or legal issues. Play it safe. On Friday and Saturday, give your super-sensitivity a break and take some time out for yourself. This Sunday, find an imaginative way to deal with a problem.

LIBRA

TAURUS

If you’re expecting boredom as the week begins, prepare to be (pleasantly) disappointed. Your routine gets some spark on Monday and Tuesday and you should follow up on any chance for fun -even if it means your work has to wait. On Wednesday and Thursday, your passions will push you into action. Just make sure they don’t push you into trouble, too. On Friday and Saturday, your trademark patience will pay off. Now is the time to pause and ponder, even if others are rushing ahead. Someone in the know will give you the gift of enlightenment.

LEO

Everybody is on your side as the week begins. And how could they not be? You’ve got all the answers (and you’re having all the fun!) on Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy the popularity. On Wednesday and Thursday, you’ll quiet down ever so slightly — now is an excellent time for chin-rubbing introspection and quiet analysis. You’ll kick back into action just in time for the weekend and you can expect applause, affection and admiration wherever you take your dramatic presence. On Sunday, help yourself out by helping someone else.

SCORPIO

Who can resist your flirtatious smile and easygoing outlook? Nobody, at least not as the week begins — you’ll be charming socks off by the score on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, you might still be generous with your attention, but you’ll be stingy with your cash. Put that fiscal fussiness to use by plotting out a smart financial plan. On Friday and Saturday, you’re full of yourself — but in a good way! You’ve got a lot to say and you’re surrounded by people who want to hear what’s on your mind. On Sunday, take some quiet time for yourself.

The week could start on a difficult note. Your heart and your head can’t seem to agree on Monday and Tuesday and this might be a better time to think than act (especially if you can count on some backand-forth banter with friends). Your outlook on Wednesday and Thursday should clear up dramatically, finding you exceptionally charismatic and confident. You’ll know what you want and you’ll know how to get it. On Friday and Saturday, you can expect to get caught up in the moment. Somebody persuasive wants to sweep you up in their plans, but you can count on your instincts to guide you. On Sunday, start something new.

Your ambitiousness will pay off as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both great days to start projects and make things happen. Everyone might not be on the same over-achieving wavelength right now, but they’ll at least have the good sense to get out of your way. Wednesday and Thursday should give you time and perspective to step back and re-assess where you’re at — and you can count on friends to help you take accounts. On Friday and Saturday, you need to stay disciplined in the details, but try to let your mind roam to suss out the big picture. On Sunday, you’ve got the brains and brawn to accomplish anything.

Expect to make close connections as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both perfect days for getting your point across and winning over friends (and maybe even making new ones). Wednesday and Thursday see you slowing back down and turning inward, as thoughts shift to the big picture. Are you making enough progress in your chosen work? On Friday and Saturday, others will expect you to take charge — but in a fun way! Organize an outing (or a party maybe?) with friends both new and old. Don’t bother trying to accomplish anything on Sunday. Just try to kick back and enjoy the day.

Every week should begin this way! You’re full of energy and enthusiasm on Monday and Tuesday - and you’ve got ample charm to inspire others at home, at work or anywhere. Expect to slow down on Wednesday and Thursday, though: You’ll be more intent on analysis than action. That unusual intelligence and insight should carry you well into Friday and Saturday, when you can put those ideas to work - and you can expect some help from a like minded partner to make things happen. On Sunday, be flexible. Use your trademark flexibility to adapt to the unexpected.

VIRGO

Show some prudence on financial matters as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both bad days for impulse purchases but they’re great days for other kinds of exuberance, like spontaneous opinions and wide-eyed ideas. On Wednesday and Thursday, indulge your intellect by striking up conversations and following your curiosity. On Friday and Saturday, resist the urge to rush ahead. Sometimes the most daring - and worthy - risk is to kick back and just let things happen. On Sunday, rest on your laurels. Your hard work has paid off and it’s time for some fun and romance.

SAGITTARIUS

Who loves you, baby? Everybody, apparently - or at least it’ll seem that way as this week begins. Friends and admirers will rally to your banner on Monday and Tuesday and it’s a good time to make your wishes known. You can expect an attentive audience. On Wednesday and Thursday, that outgoing mood could shift to shyness. Maybe it’s time for some peace and quiet to recharge? By Friday (and on into Saturday), you’ll be back to your jovial, genial self and you can count on having fun even if things don’t go the way you planned. On Sunday, do something truly unique and original - even if it’s just a small, symbolic gesture.

PISCES

Watch out for conflict as the week begins. Others might not be on your side on Monday and Tuesday and even former partners could have ambitions at odds with your plans. Don’t be afraid to toss out the old in favour of the new and on Wednesday and Thursday be extra careful of anyone trying to take advantage. Stand up for yourself and don’t back down! If you can formulate a smart plan on Friday and Saturday, expect to have luck on your side. The stars will aid your efforts to do the right thing. On Sunday, take the lead. Others will look to you to provide direction — or to point the way towards someone else who will.

Design First of all, it's big. With its 6-inch screen it measures 161x82mm, making it just a little awkward to hold and use one-handed. It's reasonably thin though at 7.9mm, though its distinctive curve stretches that to 8.7mm at the ends. The casing is made of smooth plastic and curves in a gentle arc giving it a very distinctive, if not especially practical look. It's not only curved, it's also a little bendy. Place it face down on a table and it sits slightly proud of the surface. Press it and it stretches flat, then returns to its original shape. he screen is of the new POLED variety, with the self-lighting pixels of an OLED screen on a plastic, rather than glass, backing. It lies under glass though -- bendy Corning Gorilla Glass. LG’s modifications to the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS include a lock screen animation that rolls as you move the phone -hold it upright to see the sun, and as you lower it you slide down to the surface of the sea and below. It’s a neat trick that shows off the expansive screen and its IMAX-style curve. It’s all clever, innovative stuff, designed to impress and to draw attention. But unfortunately, that’s really the main reason for the curve. Yes it flexes if you sit on it rather than breaking -- up to a point. And yes, the curve does reduce screen glare -- a little bit. But the advantages are small ones, and certainly don’t justify the high price. The curve isn’t the only attention-grabbing feature either. There are no buttons on the front or the sides. Instead there’s a single large power/sleep button flanked by volume controls on the back, just beneath the camera lens. We saw this before on the G2 and it works pretty well, easier to reach considering the large size of the phone -- once you get used to the oddness of it. Curve aside, the screen offers a decent if not outstanding HD resolution of 1,280x720 pixels (245ppi), which is less than we’d expect on a phone with this price. It looks okay, but lacks the super sharpness that the screen’s other innovations seem to promise. Android and processor Surprisingly, it’s running the slightly aged 4.2.2 Jelly Bean version of Android rather than the very latest 4.4 KitKat. In practise, that’s not too much of a drawback, but for a high-ender like this, we’d expect the software to be up to the minute. As if to compensate for these disappointments, the quad-core processor is clocked at 2.21GHz and backed by 2GB RAM. That’s a high spec for a phablet, and sure enough it delivered an AnTuTu score of 35,714 -- putting it very firmly in the top rank and one of the most powerful mobile devices we’ve tested. It certainly feels fast in practise, zipping through multiple apps and displaying HD games with ease and grace.

England Six Nations Blow as Ireland clinch Six Nations

The Ireland rugby team have arrived home yesterday to a rapturous welcome in Dublin after winning the Six Nations. Hundreds gathered to greet the champions, who defeated France in Paris on Saturday. It couldn't have kicked off a better start to the St Patrick's Day celebrations, as Brian O'Driscoll arrived home with trophy in hand following his last international match. Ireland won the RBS 6 Nations title after beating France 22-20 in Paris, to give Brian O'Driscoll a fairytale send-off, in a thrilling final game of the tournament. Johnny Sexton's two tries helped Brian O'Driscoll complete the fairytale ending to his international career as Ireland claimed the RBS 6 Nations title by edging out France in Paris. Sexton ran in two tries, missed five points with the boot and was knocked out cold trying to tackle wrecking ball centre Mathieu Bastareaud. Ireland rebuffed a late French onslaught to claim their first Six Nations title since 2009 and just a second win in 42 years in Paris, with wing Andrew Trimble also on the scoresheet. O'Driscoll capped his 14st and final international appearance with just a second career Six Nations title, the storybook ending so craved by the Irish nation.

Farrell, who again was faultless with eight out of eight kicks at goal. Overall England have still had a fine tournament even if they have not won the Six Nations title. They have moved on enormously since a year ago and revealed a game that is ambitious and wide-ranging. Last autumn they ensured that they had a pack of forwards to compete with the best, and that was evident here again even if the scrummage struggled at first before finishing strongly. Now they have shown that they have a backline that is dangerous, if not fully composed and flowing at all times. Added to that they have a rock-solid defence. The only try they conceded here was a result of late over-ambition from their own 22. They simply had to take the risk.

Wales romped to their biggest ever Six Nations win - and handed Scotland their record defeat in the Championship in the process - as they ran in seven tries against a visiting side reduced to 14 men when Stuart Hogg was red carded. The Scottish full-back was dismissed in the 22nd minute for a late shoulder charge on Wales fly-half Dan Biggar, with the hosts leading 10-3 at that point. England scored seven tries in an emphatic 52-11 victory over Italy on Saturday but their hopes of winning the Six Nations championship still depend on Ireland losing or drawing with France later in the day. Rosberg wins & Ricciardo Punished

Mercedes star Rosberg got a perfect start to claim the lead from team-mate and pole-sitter Hamilton, and never looked troubled thereafter. Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo originally claimed what seemed an impressive second place in front of his home crowd, but was later stripped of his accolade as

a subsequent investigation showed that his car had consistent exceeded the maximum allowable fuel flow rate allowed under 2014 rules. That left McLaren's Kevin Magnussen, originally third, with a stunning second place on his F1 debut, with Jenson Button close behind in third. The shocks of the race were the early retirements of Hamilton and Vettel, however, both of whom suffered misfiring cylinders that saw them missing pace from the start. Fernando Alonso was promoted to fourth after Ricciardo fell foul of stewards, but perhaps the performance of the day came from Vallteri Bottas, who came fifth after twice scything through almost the entire field - once at the start of the race, and then again after hitting a wall, losing his right rear tyre and limping into the pits. Hamilton and Vettel both added that they are confident the issues could be solved quickly - and given the excellent pace of their team-mates, that seems more than likely. Rosberg, tipped to duel with team mate Hamilton for the championship, celebrated his fourth race victory and first since last year's British Grand Prix, when he was also the beneficiary of technical mishaps to Hamilton and Vettel.

Schumacher remains in 'waking-up phase,' as F1 pays tribute in Melbourne

Michael Schumacher's manager has said that the former F1 star is yet to wake from a coma following his skiing accident. Schumacher's previous team Mercedes dedicated their win at the Australian Grand Prix to him. Manager Sabine Kehm said on Sunday that Michael Schumacher's condition was largely unchanged, telling the German television channel RTL that the 45-yearold had not woken from his coma. "Michael remains in the waking-up phase, in other words: he has not yet woken up," Kehm told RTL during their coverage of the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday. "We are of course waiting for that moment, but we have learned

and we also accept that this could take a long time. We've come to terms with this." In a recent statement, Kehm had said thatSchumacher was exhibiting small signs of improvement. She told RTL on Sunday that she still could not elaborate on these signs, describing them as "really the most private of family matters." Many current drivers on the Formula One grid carried messages of support for the stricken seven-time world champion at the season's first race in Melbourne on Sunday. The CEO of Mercedes' parent company Daimler, Dieter Zetsche, said the Mercedes F1 team dedicated Nico Rosberg's victory to their former driver.

Good Week Fulham win to inspire survival?

Fulham boss Felix Magath believes his side’s 1-0 victory against Newcastle can kick-start their battle for Premier League survival. The win, courtesy of an Ashkan Dejagah goal, was the first in 10 top-flight games for the Cottagers, who remain four points from safety. Fulham’s win was the first in four games since Magath took over and came after the German made five changes from the side which had been beaten 3-1 by Cardiff in their previous game. Fulham survived a penalty shout for a Heitinga handball from Tim Krul’s shot after the Newcastle keeper had gone up for a corner in the final moments of the match.

Fabian Delph’s cheeky 82nd-minute finish was enough to wrap up all three points for a spirited Aston Villa side as nine-man Chelsea suffered their first Premier League defeat since December 7. The match was a largely dull affair until Willian was shown a second yellow card for a push on Delph. Jose Mourinho reacted angrily towards fourth official Jon Moss, but his mood darkened moments later when Delph clipped a clever backheel beyond Petr Cech. But, as is always the case with Mourinho, more drama was to come. In injury time the Portuguese raced on to the pitch to confront referee Chris Foy following his decision to show Ramires a straight red for a tackle on Karim El Ahmadi.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE In a fast and furies Weekend a full Premier League Programme produced plenty of action and talking points which included 24 goals,7 clean sheets,45 yellow cards and 4 red ones going into the Fantasy.Liverpool’s Captain Steven Gerrard missed the chance of a unique Hat-Trick of Penalties when he missed his 3rd Pen, all by kind permission our well known Super Star Referee Mark Clattenburg.Jose Mourinho doesn’t want Chris Foy to Referee any more Chelsea Games and I’m not surprised has he sent 2 of his Players off and banished him to the Stands.Just as a matter of interest Mr.Foy comes from St.Helens which is just near Liverpool.(No Comment Jose) Well how does all that effect the Fantasy League. Abby’s Brigade regained the top spot from Danielle’s Charlie’s Chico’s although it’s only a slight 8 point advantage. Rob’s Scunny F.C. are right up there in 3rd place while Neil’s Blue Moon Rising Again hopes of a top four finish did no harm by climbing 2 places to be in the top Four.Heidi’s Pot Luckers are struggling at the bottom and they now trail Ben’s Boys by 35 points. For the 2nd Season running our Junior League has been dominated by 1 Team. This Year Abby’s Brigade are the runaway leaders with a massive lead over Rocky’s Mini Spurs. Things are not much different at the bottom as Ben’s Boys have been there since the 3rd Week of the Season and they have never looked like moving off the bottom spot. Charlie’s Chico’s increased their lead at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section to 40 points over 2nd placed Laik’s Loonies. At the other end of the Table the Pot Luckers are still well behind the nearest Team which is Rachel & Kims El.Nui Baddies. Top Team in this Section and Manager of the Week is

Vina’s Team City Link F.C. who bagged 47 points thanks mainly to her top Striker Stoke’s Peter Odemwingie who collected this Weeks top scoring Player award after scoring 2 goals and having an assist in the Potters 3-1 win over the Hammers. Vina now has a chance of some extra pocket Money if our top Tipster Ian Charman can come up with a Winner with our Cellar Bar Cert Tip. There are no changes in our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction. Abby’s Brigade strike force of S.A.S. was back in action again picking up points while 2nd placed Micky’s Woodside pulled a couple of points back. Alan’s Wangies All Stars are still propping everybody else up at the bottom and they now are 22 point away from Stuart’s Beach Terrace Boys. Three Teams will be entering our Premier Imports Monthly Draw for a fine case of Wine and they are Vina’s top scoring City Link F.C.(47) and our 2 lowest scoring Teams. Mark’s Salford Sausages and Olivia’s Ethnic Warriors both with a minus 1.. Brian’s Stretford Enders are top of our Manager of the Month for March which is being kindly sponsored Rachel at the El Nui in Alfaz who provide super Fish & Chips on Fridays as well as other Tasty Dishes during the week. With 5 Weeks in this Month Laik’s Loonies,Charlie’s Chico’s and Rob’s Scunny F.C. are all in with a chance at the top. Premier League Tightens at Top, but United Drops to a New Low last English league title came in 1990, but Gerrard said the team proved it was a genuine contender by running United ragged in a match that Liverpool could easily have won by six or seven goals. Gerrard scored penalties in the 34th and 46th minutes and missed out on “his hat trick” after hitting the post on his third spot kick in the 78th after Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a second yellow card after fouling Daniel Sturridge, Suarez completed the crushing win with the third goal and his 25th goal of the season. Liverpool and Arsenal capitalized on a rare slip by the Premier League leader Chelsea, claiming away wins on Sunday to tighten an intriguing four-team race for the title. Liverpool dominated Manchester United, the defending league champions, in a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, with Steven Gerrard converting two penalty kicks and Luis Suarez also scoring in a one-sided match that highlighted the gulf that has emerged between the two teams. Tomas Rosicky’s superb goal after 72 seconds gave Arsenal a 1-0 win at Tottenham, a result that also probably knocked Tottenham out of contention for a top-four finish. The gap between Chelsea, which lost, 1-0, at Aston Villa on Saturday, and fourth-place Manchester City is now 6 points, and the three teams chasing the leaders have games in hand over Chelsea. It is shaping up to be one of the most exciting conclusions to a Premier League title race…And for once, it won’t include United. On the darkest day of David Moyes’s tumultuous first season as manager at Old Trafford, United was embarrassed in front of its fans by a rival that is attempting to recreate its glory days of the 1970s and 1980s, when it dominated English soccer.
