COCAINE SANDWICH

see page 11

A man caught with a ham and cheese sandwich stuffed with drugs has been arrested in the holiday resort of Benidorm. Spanish police detained the Colombian national after discovering the snack, which contained more than 100g (3.5 ounces) of cocaine. A photo of the sandwich-stash was tweeted by @policia. It shows a piece of bread containing slices of ham and melted cheese, as well as nine cylindrical packages wrapped in plastic.

The tweet revealed the man was arrested at Benidorm

bus station was suspected of trafficking.

and

Officers reportedly searched the 29-year-old's home and discovered "more than a kilo of cocaine powder and pieces, as well as marijuana and tools to handle drugs". Spanish police confirmed another suspected trafficker, reportedly a 20-year-old Colombian, had been arrested. Reports suggest the two are housemates in the coastal Mediterranean town. Spain's ties to Latin America have made it a common entry point for cocaine into Europe.

WATCH OUT FOR YOUR BELONGINGS!

British Consulate, police and tourism partners work together to reduce petty theft which represented 80% of crimes reported in Alicante province in 2013. With the busy tourist season already upon us, the police and consular staff met with tourism partners in Benidorm last week to encourage them to help keep tourists safe. The National Police prevention team gave the representatives from hotels, campsites and apartments in Benidorm some simple tips to pass on to their guests: · Beware of “triles” - groups who trick tourists with fake street games · Mobile phone theft is on the up – don’t leave your phone on the table or take it to the beach and look after your passport. · Take advantage of the “Operación Verano” – in July and August anyone can get a free certified copy of their passport from the police so they can leave the original at the hotel · People approaching tourists to ask them to sign petitions or for money are sometimes looking for opportunities to steal from them so be wary The Consulate welcomed this proactive advice to avoid petty crime and also talked about the importance

of working together to support tourists when something does go wrong, which can have a huge impact on how the victim of crime recovers from the experience.

Mr. Rodwell encouraged the hotel staff to inform guests of the National police’s “SATE” office in Benidorm, where victims of crime will be supported and assisted in English to make a police report and make any emergency calls they need to. The office is located in the Centro Municipal Torrejó, Plaza Canalejas and is open from 9am-9pm Monday to Friday and 9am-2pm at the weekend. The Consul also showed the hotel staff their prevention posters and a short video titled “Enjoy your holiday” on YouTube, which the hotels, apartments and campsites were keen to

use. Following the event, Mr Rodwell said: “The Consulate is committed to supporting vulnerable British nationals in Benidorm by working closely with the Spanish national police and tourism partners. This event was a great opportunity to gain a greater understanding of each others’ role so that we can help British nationals more effectively.” The event was opened by the head of tourism for the Valencian region, Sebastian Fernandez Miralles, the deputy Mayoress of Benidorm, Gema Amor, and the head of the National Police in Benidorm, Juan Carlos Hernandez.

Welcome Readers...

I am absolutely delighted to say that after a week of hard work and plenty of eating out that the month of May has so far been exactly what I had hoped for. Yes thats right....as you probably have guessed SCORCHING HOT SUNSHINE perfect temperatures for Alfresco Dining, Beach Bathing, Pool Cleaning, Patio Washing, Dog Walking or basically anything else that includes being outside to enjoy the Spanish Sunshine. I don't know about you but the change in temperature was more noticed in the early morning and evening, the duvet is now packed away for the next six months and is a sure sign to a life of outside living. Holiday makers are living it up and even with light cloud or overcast days the warmer air simply means HOLIDAY TIME! The smiles are back on their faces and the cash registers are going "Ching Ching" a perfect combination

of happy holiday makers and happy business owners. For me and many residents it really is time to get into the summer mood of evenings under the stars reflecting on why we are here and what the life we have is all about. There is everything we want right here in the Costa Blanca, perfect walks with stunning views, the peace of the mountains or the amazing sounds of the sea. There are activities for everyone day and night and the best choice of eating out establishments that any city or country could offer. 9 national Spanish TV channels stopped broadcasting via the terrestrial TDT system at the end of Monday night’s programming to comply with the Supreme Court verdict for broadcasting outside the scope of the Communications Act. The government has denied any interference which has seen the plug pulled on channels like Xplora, Nitro, and LaSexta3 to make space for an auction of broadcast spectrum for mobile phone operators which will ultimately benefit the coffers in Madrid. Most of the “pulled” channels are continuing to broadcast via satellite.

AIR RISE

Alicante-Elche airport is well on target to have more than 10 million passengers going through its doors by the end of the year, as April’s figures showed a 9.6% rise compared to the same month last year. An element of that rise would be due to the fact that Easter

fell in April this year as opposed to March, but all 4 months this year have shown rises compared to 2013. Airport owner, AENA, has also announced that it will be freezing its airport charges for carriers next year.

STOWAWAY FOUND CLINGING EL TORO TO FERRY WOULD LIKE IT

A small town offered a new perspective on publicising a bull-running festival, by hiring a woman to walk around the streets promoting the event in only her knickers. La Vall d’Uixó in the Valencia region holds Bous al Carrer, an ancient bull-running festival in which the animals are let loose in the fenced-off town centre. As a way of promoting

the bulls they had put money on, two local groups or

peñas, hired a woman to

walk around topless through the streets with an advertising banner. Although not everyone is opposed to the move, local political groups have called for the peñas to be fined as a means of setting a precedent for similar sexist acts. "This does no favours for gender equality in our region or in Spain as a whole,".

Video footage has captured the moment a stowaway was discovered hidden inside the engine housing of a ferry travelling from Morocco to southern Spain. The Moroccan man, wearing a wetsuit, had clung to the left turbine of the ferry for the 35-minute journey across the Strait of Gibraltar between Tangier and the port of Tarifa, near Cadiz. The 20-year-old, who was carrying a bag of belongings

tied to his arm, was arrested by officers from the National Police at around 11am on Wednesday. He was then taken to an immigration detention centre. It is believed he was intending to jump into the water and swim ashore before arriving at the

port to avoid immigration barriers after completing the 18 mile journey.

NO DINERO NEW CARS UP Nearly half of young Spaniards aged under 30 get virtually no money, whilst only 1 in 5 can afford to set up home on their own. A total of 47.5% of young Spaniards aged between 16 and 29 receive no formal income at all, the study by youth lobby group CJE shows. THIS YEARS NEXT TOP MODEL... NOT!

An Iranian man conned 10 women into being his sex slaves after pretending to be an oil boss who owned a luxury villa in Marbella. The fraudster first captured the young women’s attention by pretending to be a wealthy businessman with an impressive list of contacts in the fashion industry. With the promise of making them all top models, he moved them into his luxurious villa. “He enjoyed their company whenever he wanted,” sources close to the investigation said when describing how 50-year-old Shoja S. managed to set

up his own private harem.

Although the women soon became aware that their lover was no more

than a conman, he kept them under his thumb with physical and psychological abuse. After three years living under the same roof, Shoja fathered seven children with his ten concubines. “It was the girls who paid for everything after asking their loved ones for money,” according to the source. One of them has filed a lawsuit against Shoja for allegedly forcing her family to pay the monthly €6,500 rent for the villa, whilst eight others have since pressed charges against him for physical and psychological abuse.

HIGH SPEED CROOKS

9 people have been arrested as part of an embezzlement plot linked to building the high speed rail link between Madrid and Barcelona. Police searched 11 homes and offices as part of their investigation, including the headquarters of state railway company Adif. Some 6 million Euros of public money is said to have been stolen in a project that ended up costing close to 4 billion Euros, with the line having opened in January 2013.

GLUTEN DONA

Supermarket chain Mercadona has increased its gluten-free product range and now offers more foodstuffs for the wheat-intolerant, or coeliac, which they claim is more than any other retailer. The recent introduction of 50 new items has brought the Valencia-based chain's range up to 850 products, giving those allergic to gluten a much wider choice and more opportunities for a varied and interesting diet.

VLAD’S NASTY GANG

The trial has started of a Romanian prostitution gang in Alicante, with 20 defendants facing charges of pimping, rape, conspiracy, and prostitution, though their leader Vlad Costel is in a Romanian jail. Nicknamed “El Gordo”, he is accused of controlling one Europe’s largest prostitution networks, which operated around Alicante, Elche, Guardamar and Orihuela. Many of the victims were women and children, who were beaten after being

shipped over to Spain from Romania with promises of a better life. The case has taken over 10 years to come to trial, with some of the defendants having died or been arrested for crimes in other countries.

TO THIS LAPTOP I THEE WED

A man has launched a court challenge for the right to marry his laptop. Chris Sevier filed a 50-page motion to the 10th US Circuit Court of Appeal because he was denied the right to marry his MacBook "machine spouse" by Utah officials. He argues the love he has for the "pornfilled" Apple device is no different to that shared between gay partners. The move is an intervention in a separate lawsuit challenging the state's same-sex marriage ban. In his motion, Mr Sevier wrote: "They dis-

criminated against me when they rejected my request to marry my computer.

"I approached the Utah clerk to have a marriage licence issued for me and my machine-spouse. "The clerk denied my request for a marriage licence … my object of affection was outside the scope of the narrow definition." He added: "If anything, my marriage to a machine possesses less of a risk, since a possible acrimonious divorce proceeding

I just nicked your son… ...any chance of a lift? A police officer lost his car keys after arresting a suspect… and had to ask for a lift to the station from the prisoner’s mother. The officer accidentally locked the keys in the boot as he was about to put the cuffed man in the patrol car. Sheepishly, he went back to the suspect’s house to ask his mother if she had a car and if she could drive them to the police station. She agreed and ushered her son

and the officer – still handcuffed together – into the back of her three-door Vauxhall Corsa as neighbours on the housing estate jeered and laughed. The officer’s gaffe was revealed today in Police magazine. According to the report, he was ‘met with some hostility’ when he arrested the man for assault in Nottinghamshire last month. It went on: ‘The officer, having seized evidence from the suspect’s bedroom, carefully placed it in the boot of the

police car and then promptly locked the car keys inside as he closed the boot lid. ‘Being in the middle of nowhere, the officer – with his head bowed –knocked on the suspect’s door, asking kindly whether his mum could transport them to the local station.’ The report added that the sight of them being driven away was ‘greeted with waves and polite gestures (at least that’s what the officer reported)’ by residents.

could be avoided, if the marriage fails." Last year Mr Sevier filed a lawsuit trying to intervene in similar circumstances in Florida. The judge threw out his challenge, suggesting it was "removed from reality" and saying it had "no place" in the ongoing lawsuit. Mr Sevier has previously tried to sue TV network A&E for firing Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson in the wake of homophobic comments. And he also attempted to claim damages from Apple for failing to add a "safe mode" to his computer, which he said led to his pornography addiction.

HALF PRICE STEAKS ARE MAGIC

The VISTA CARD REVIEW TEAM went along to the Magic Restaurant in Calle Ibiza Benidorm. It wasn't that long ago when we went along to check out the new menu of the day known as the "Lunch Club" but this time our visit was because of their latest promotion for our readers and for VISTA CARD holders. A fantastic offer to promote their Steaks and Grills, now in the second week of the promotion and they have already been the talk of the town so we wanted to go along for the experience and to see what great value this offer is. "Half Price Steak" when you pay for one meal from the grill menu the second is half price. Talking to restaurant owner Paco the man behind the very successful VINCENTS pub chain he explained “Half Price Steaks give people the opportunity of enjoying a succulent steak or a meal from the Grill Menu at an incredible discounted price. This offer has introduced many new customers and has been designed to offer a great choice of popular grills that include Fillet and Sirloin Steak, Lamb and Gammon steaks using only the best quality products and ingredients this is home cooked food at its best". Taking our seats in the typical British Pub Restaurant setting with comfortable chairs and nice big tables which allow plenty of room to spread out on. There are high chairs for the little

ones and even the TV's are on without sound so the boys don't miss the big match. We were greeted by Bret who offered us a choice of seating areas and then continued to take our drink order once we were seated. The restaurant was busy with a mixture of guests ranging from couples to a large group of 24 all seated together for a special occasion. The fact that the restaurant was busy did not impact on the service we had been provided at all from the very start it was service with a smile. Our order was taken swiftly and the food was served in a

very reasonable time frame, the team had all chosen something different but for me it was the Fillet Steak cooked medium and that was exactly how it came, not too red but juicy and pink. The plate was dressed with grilled tomato, mushroom and peas. The choice of jacket potato or hand cut chips were available and we all love our chips and the topic of the conversation for the start was all about how great the chips were. My colleague had a full rack of ribs that were enjoyed by the fact he had to get stuck in with his fingers, a messy job but well worth it I was told, the meat was falling of the bone and the tangy sauce had been generously applied. I had noticed that the large group had already been served with their meals not long after we had been served, this seemed quite a task of getting everyone served at the same time although the staff seemed very competent and the smooth running of the restaurant was the team work and efficiency of the waitress together with the manager Bret. We all had positive feedback and empty plates too, our satisfaction was a combination of great food and great friendly service. Go along and experience the best tasting Steaks and Grills in Benidorm the Magic Restaurant Calle Ibiza, Bret and the team are waiting to welcome you. Don't forget they also cater for all types of celebrations and will make your party a very special occasion.

“Tapas and Cava” Reviewed 3 May 2014 Love the atmosphere of this little gem in the old town. Food menu is extensive and reasonably priced. Had platters of cheese, patatas bravas and their lovely chicken wings.

“Fantastic” Reviewed 7 April 2014 As we were in Spain I really wanted to go to an authentic Tapas bar and was really not disappointed. Our taxi driver recommended this place and told us its where all the locals eat. It was busy but we found a place to sit and ordered a varied selection of dishes and wines which were delicious. The people behind the bar speak little English but they were patient with our broken spanish ordering. If you want a true authentic experience try here and you won't be disappointed.

“A must visit” Reviewed 10 April 2014 My husband and I came across this very atmospheric tapas bar whilst walking around the old town of Benidorm and decided to stop for lunch. It is very, very popular and we were lucky to get the last two seats but we so enjoyed our lunch of tapas and wine and we would definitely seek this out next time we visit. There is also free wifi here!

“The Best in Spain” Reviewed 27 April 2014 Me and big outy will be back here for lunch on tuesday 20th may at 1pm. Cant wait to eat here again with a nice bottle of chilled white wine sat outside people watching

BENEFITS OF GRAPEFRUIT JUICE Are you taking medication? Are you a lover of grapefruit? If so, are you aware that grapefruit and grapefruit containing products and certain other citrus fruits can interact with a range of prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications? This interaction was discovered completely by accident when researchers were investigating whether alcohol interacted with the drug felodipine. The alcohol was mixed with grapefruit juice simply to mask the taste of alcohol for the study. Researchers discovered that blood levels of felodipine were increased several times compared to previous studies where no grapefruit juice was used. It is important to be aware if the drugs that you are taking are affected as some can cause potentially dangerous problems. Certain chemicals that grapefruit products and citrus fruits contain can interfere with the enzyme CYP3A4 that breaks down various medications in your digestive system. This can lead to a dangerous build up of the drug causing overdose and serious side effects.

The compounds thought to cause this problem are called Foranocoumarins and can block digestive enzymes in excess of 24 hours meaning that grapefruit must be completely avoided .

Pomelos and Seville oranges, a type of bitter orange often used to make marmalades and compotes, may have a similar effect . The majority of medications do not interact with grapefruit juice. However, grapefruit juice does have an effect on more than 50 different drugs. If you are being treated for any of the following conditions, check with your Doctor or Pharmacist to find out it is safe for you to consume grapefruit or other citrus fruits. - Abnormal heart rhythm - Allergies - Anxiety - Asthma and COPD - Blood clots - BPH (enlarged prostate) - Cancer - Cough - Depression - Epilepsy - Erectile dysfunction - Heart disease - High blood pressure - High cholesterol - HIV/AIDS - Hormonal conditions - Infection-viral, bacterial and fungal

CHILDHOOD OBESITY THE SHOCKING FACTS

Like children’s waistlines, the problem of childhood obesity is getting BIGGER AND BIGGER!!! Facts from the most recent large scale survey in the U.K. reveal that: • 25% of boys and 33% of girls aged between two and 19 years are overweight or obese. • Obesity currently costs the country around £2 billion annually. • Obesity shortens child’s lives by nine years, due to the associated health problems. Some health experts even believe we’ll soon see parents outliving their children. Health risks associated with childhood obesity include heart disease, high blood

pressure (certain studies show that overweight teenagers were eight and a half times more likely to develop high blood pressure and almost 2 and a half times as likely to have high blood cholesterol levels), certain cancers, joint problems, psychological problems and diabetes. Diabetes UK believes there are currently around 100 children with the condition, although some experts believe the figure could be as high as 1,400 based on the number of overweight and obese schoolchildren there are in the UK. Experts relate this solely to the increase in childhood obesity. One of the biggest

concerns is that parents are getting so used to seeing overweight children they don’t recognise their own children are obese.

Unfortunately, there’s no mystery as to why children are getting so fat: • Poor diet containing too much fat, salt, junk food etc. and too little fresh fruit and vegetables. • Lack of exercise, computer based activities being the favourite pastime of most children. Unfortunately for some, problems start early in life. A survey by Mother & Baby magazine revealed that nine out of 10 toddlers eat junk food, with chocolate, biscuits, crisps, fish fingers, chips, cake and chicken nuggets appearing in their top 10 favourite foods. In an attempt to stem the problem of childhood obesity the most important thing is to encourage eating habits from an early age.

LEWIS Part one of two. After seven years of ducking the issue, Lewis and Hobson are embarking on a relationship, but the detective also has a new case to solve. Elderly don Richard Seager is murdered on the night of his release from prison, having served a sentence for causing death by dangerous driving. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Euro-Cars La Nucia celebrated their 20th anniversary last week, the company started in 1994 with the sale of cheap and slightly older cars and over the years they have evolved into the very best place to get a fantastic deal on almost new cars, they also pride themselves on being specialists in automatic vehicles. We went along to congratulate them on their special day and enjoy the party. Upon arrival we could see people having a look at some of the great cars on offer and could see that some had already been purchased or put on hold, people definitely got there early to snap up the best bargains. We looked around a bit more and then settled into some comfy

Their hospitality easily reflected on why they have become a successful business along the years looking after their customers and going the extra mile, we had wished we could have stayed all day but sadly we had to get back home. We will definitely be back for their next birthday and will be the first place to call upon when looking for a change of transportation.

Your weekly Horoscopes Aries -

Because things have been going so well of late, minor hiccups this week may seem more negative than they actually are. Taking a calmer more contemplative approach would settle your nerves. When you work towards a goal you feel you’re moving forward.

Taurus -

You may need to be a bit pushier than you have been of late if you want to reach your goals, and if others have not been pulling their weight, you may have to tell it to them straight. You’re heading into a sociable weekend, where you may just get some extra spice in your love life.

CRACK CODED TWEETS FOR A JOB AT THE NSA

It's not a typical job application. No CV, no covering letter, just cryptic tweets that you must decipher to be in with a shot at a job at the America's top intelligence organisation. The National Security Agency (NSA) – the subject of the controversial Edward Snowden snooping revelations – is hiring. Last night, a tweet was posted on its @NSACareers account made up of a series of apparently random letters and spaces. Some Twitter users suggested the feed had been hacked, or a disgruntled employee was playing a prank. But the NSA later confirmed the tweet was part of a month-long campaign of coded tweets to "explore careers essential to protecting our nation". A spokeswoman told said: "The NSA is known as the code makers and code breakers. "As part of our recruitment efforts to attract the best and the brightest, we will post mission related coded Tweets

on Mondays in the month of May." Within minutes, the code was cracked. It was a simple letter substitution puzzle that translated simply as: "Want to know what it takes to work at NSA? Check back each Monday in May as

we explore career essentials to protect our nation." The puzzles are expected to get harder in the coming weeks. Those who are able to crack the most complex codes are likely to be of interest to the NSA's recruiters.

NASA JOYSTICK AUCTION

The joystick used to land Apollo 15 on the Moon is to be auctioned. With a starting bid of $10,000 (£5,900) it is a chance for space enthusiasts to own a piece of lunar history. But potential bidders are warned that the final selling price could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars in the online auction. It comes with a two-page letter of authenticity and explanation from astronaut David Scott, who used the device during Nasa’s eighth successful manned Moon mission.

His three-strong crew spent three days on the Moon during the 1971 mission, which was hailed as the most successful manned flight ever achieved at the time. It was the first 'J mission' – longer stays on the Moon with a greater focus on scientific exploration. The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) was also used for the first time. In the letter Mr Scott wrote: "This has been in my personal collection since returning to Earth." The joystick is significant because

the lunar module from Apollo 15 was nearly 3,000 feet south of its landing spot when Mr Scott had to steer it back on course. He added: "This remarkable device … provided the Commander and crew with 11 separate functions during four major phases of a lunar landing mission." Other items that will be featured in the auction include Buzz Aldrin's Nasaissued glove worn at the Tranquility Base during the first lunar landing, and a ceramic tile flown in lunar orbit.

SHINJI KAGAWA IN JAPAN SQUAD

Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa has been included in Japan's 23 man squad for the World Cup. Kagawa has struggled to win a regular starting spot at Old Trafford since his move from Borussia Dortmund in June 2012, but Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni has still named him in his party for Brazil this summer. Southampton defender Maya Yoshida is also among 12 Europe-based players selected by Zaccheroni. AC Milan midfielder Keisuke Honda has also been included along with Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki. Joining them are veteran forward Yoshito Okubo, who played for Japan in South Africa four years ago and has scored eight goals

this season for J-League club Kawasaki Frontale. Japan, who co-hosted the World Cup with South Korea in 2002, are preparing for their fifth consecutive World Cup campaign and face Ivory Coast, Greece and Colombia in Group C.

COLE RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

Ashley Cole has retired from international football after being told he would not be in England's World Cup squad. Chelsea left-back Cole, 33, has struggled for playing time with his club this season, with Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta having been preferred by Jose Mourinho. The decision brings an end to a lengthy

international career for Cole, who made his England debut against Albania in 2001 and has won 107 caps since. Cole, who is out of contract this summer as well, wrote on his Twitter feed: "I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now.

There were some surprise omissions, however, especially that of experienced Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, who is on the stand-by list. Norwich keeper John Ruddy, who lost out to Forster, is also standing-by. Promising Liverpool youngster John Flanagan is also on the list of spares along with Everton centreback John Stones, Man United's Tom Cleverley, and strikers Jermain Defoe of Toronto and Andy Carroll of West Ham. The group will prepare for England's first pre-tournament friendly against Peru at Wembley on May 30 before Hodgson confirms his final 23-man squad on June 2. LA LIGA FINAL DAY SHOWDOWN

Barcelona set up a finalday La Liga title showdown with Atletico Madrid on Saturday after drawing with Elche. It keeps Barca three points behind Atletico going into that game at the Nou Camp, where victory would see Barca win the title on head-to-head record. However, a Barca win over Elche would not have

changed anything in terms of what was needed on the final day. The visitors had the best chances with Andres Iniesta hitting a fantastic volley which was saved by Manu. Alexis Sanchez, Pedro and Lionel Messi all had opportunities before Adriano curled just wide late on for Barcelona. Elche, whose point has secured their safety from rel-

egation, failed to test Barcelona keeper Jose Manuel Pinto in the 90 minutes. Had Atletico beaten Malaga in their match which was being played at the same time, Diego Simeone's team would have won the title. However, that match finished 1-1. Last weekend, Barca's title hopes looked over after drawing 2-2 with Getafe to leave them three

points off Atletico, with the club rumoured to be in talks with Luis Enrique about replacing head coach Gerardo Martino. However a lot can change in eight days and they are now favourites to win the league in Martino's first season in charge. Barca and Atletico drew 00 in their previous league meeting in January.

HANSEN LEAVES MOTD AFTER 22YRS Alan Hansen has retired as a Match of the Day pundit after 22 years on Britain's mostwatched football show. "I've had a great 22 years and the Premier League has gone

VILLA FOR SALE

American owner Randy Lerner has confirmed that he has put Aston Villa up for sale. Lerner bought Villa from Doug Ellis in 2006 but there has been uncertainty over his future throughout a difficult campaign which ended in a lowly 15th-place finish after Sunday's 3-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. And Lerner has now declared that he believes it is the right moment for the club

to sell and look for new owners who can push them forward. In a statement published on the club's website, Lerner said: "I feel that now is the time for me to look for new ownership and thus new leadership. Lerner, who owns NFL franchise Cleveland Browns, paid £60m for the club in 2006 and has since invested £200m.

from strength to strength." Hansen's contract with the BBC will end after the summer's World Cup. Hansen, who started his career at Partick Thistle, said leaving his role after the summer was "a good way to go out" and that he could not be convinced to continue, having initially planned to retire at 55. During his time as a pundit, Hansen has been widely recognised as a voice of authority - casting opinion on the controversial moments at the heart of the game. "When me and Des Lynam sat down initially to do Match of the Day, we decided we wouldn't say the obvious," said Hansen, who narrated the closing sequence of Match of the Day for the 2013-14 season. He turned down managerial roles including Manchester City in 1995 - to prosper as a pundit, working alongside presenters Lynam and Gary Lineker.

Celta Vigo ended any lingering hopes Real Madrid had of Primera Division glory by claiming a 2-0 victory over Carlo Ancelotti's men at Estadio Balaidos. The capital club needed a remarkable set of results to go in their favour to take the title, although rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona's failure to win on Sunday night gave them a superb opportunity to catapult themselves back into contention following draws in their last two fixtures. Cristiano Ronaldo was absent due to injury, while Gareth Bale was an unused substitute for Los Blancos, who were lacking a creative spark in the opening stages.

MADRID MISERY FOR OFF-COLOUR MURRAY

A lacklustre Andy Murray suffered a third round exit at the Mutua Madrid Open after a comprehensive straight sets defeat by Santiago Giraldo. Murray had won his first match on clay in almost a year on Wednesday evening when he defeated Nicolas Almagro in three sets, but he never looked like repeating the feat on Thursday as Giraldo recorded a 6-3 6-2 win. It was the Colombian's first victory over Murray in three attempts and comes on the back of his impressive run to the final in Barcelona a fortnight ago. Although the South American was impressive, Murray was a long way from his best and contributed to his downfall with 24 unforced errors during the contest. The tone was set as early as Murray's first service game with the Scot sending a backhand long on breakpoint to hand his opponent a 2-0 lead. That proved the only break of the set with Giraldo

serving out to love at 5-3 to move ahead, a raking forehand winner closing out the game. Murray did fashion a break-point opportunity of his own at the start of the second, but he netted a weak forehand return to let his opponent off the hook and Giraldo would go on to hold. It would prove a costly miss as the Colombian broke in the very next game; although Murray did well to fight back from 0-40 down, an unfortunate net-cord would ultimately hand his rival a 2-1 lead. From that point the British No 1 did not threaten to get back into things and Giraldo gave himself the insurance of a double-break when another poor Murray backhand found the net as he fell 5-2 behind. Giraldo made no mistake when serving for the match, a booming ace confirming victory and a quarter-final clash against Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut.

SHERWOOD MEL LEAVES INVITES FAN TO WEST BROM SIT ON BENCH

Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood invited a fan to sit on the bench during the club’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday. During what is likely to be Sherwood’s final game in charge at White Hart Lane, the Spurs boss invited season ticket holder Danny Grimsdale wear his gilet and sit in the home dugout next to his assistants Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund. “It's something that I won't ever forget,” Grimsdale told BBC Radio Five Live. “To be fair to him, he's not fighting with the fans. He's always happy to chat and have a laugh with us. I called a couple of subs he should

make and it just so happened he made them. “We were 3-0 up at the time and I thought it would be a good chance to bring some youngsters on and he said ‘you know what, why don't you come and have a go’. “It was just surreal. I didn't know what to make of it, or if I would get in trouble for going over the barrier. “I’m a lifelong Spurs fan so I'm not going to turn down the chance to sit in the hotseat. As I was walking away he said "you can keep the jacket" and he shook my hand and patted me on the back.

West Bromwich Albion have parted company with Pepe Mel by mutual consent just five months after he arrived at The Hawthorns. The former Tenerife and Real Betis boss was brought in by Albion to replace Steve Clarke after his dismissal

last December. Albion finished fourth from bottom in the Premier league, just three points ahead of relegated Norwich. Following discussions between the West Brom board and Mel, Albion's sporting and technical director Richard Garlick con-

firmed the decision. Garlick said: "We would like to thank Pepe for his efforts over the past four months in helping to keep the club in the Premier League and wish him well for the future. David Gomez has also left West Brom following the completion of his coaching contract, but assistant head coach Keith Downing and

goalkeeper coach Dean Kiely will remain in their current roles. "The search for a new head coach has now begun. We aim to find the most suitable candidate who, with the support of the structure we have had in place for six years and are presently strengthening, will enable the club to be more competitive next season."

MAN CITY WIN PREMIERSHIP

Manchester City wrapped up a second Premier League title in three seasons after beating West Ham United after Liverpool's come-from-behind win over Newcastle United proved to be in vain. Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany scored the goals as Manchester City beat West Ham 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium to claim the title by two points. Liverpool came from behind to round off their excellent season with a 2-1

home win over Newcastle, who finished the match with nine men. Norwich City's relegation from the top flight was confirmed after a home defeat by fourth-placed Arsenal, while Tottenham Hotspur booked Europa League football for next season by beating Aston Villa. Ryan Giggs' likely last game as Manchester United manager ended in a draw at Southampton, as FA Cup finalists Hull City were beaten at home by Everton. Bottom club Cardiff City bowed out of

the Premier League with a home defeat by Chelsea as fellow relegated side Fulham twice came from behind to draw with Crystal Palace Stoke City recorded their highest Premier League finish with a win at outof-form West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland's recent flying run was checked by Swansea City. A 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane, in what could be Tim Sherwood's last match as manager, guaranteed European football for Tottenham next season.
