BENIDORM CASINO GETS ITS FINAL TOUCHES

After having the opportunity and pleasure of meeting Miguel Angel who is the commercial director at the new Casino Mediterráneo in Benidorm only this this week, I was shown around the brand new and exciting venue. I can report that the new casino opening has been delayed until Thursday 31st July subject to the final technical equipment being installed and tested. Miguel said "we are very proud of the work that has been completed so far in the time given. It has been a building project with very strict deadlines and so far we have met most of them". I asked Miguel for a tour of the building and also asked for further information for our readers. The ten poker tables were all set out and the area designated for Texas Hold‘em Poker was

Welcome Readers... I had said last week that the heat was on, and yes it certainly has been HOT… The expected heat wave covered the country and not only here in Spain but also across Europe with the temperatures in many places in the UK getting above 30 degrees however although it is hot back home, the heat is not the same in the UK with intense humidity and very high UV levels. For thousands of travellers to Spain and the Costa Blanca it's all about the wonderful surroundings, sandy beaches and so much to do.' The breeze here this last weekend made it a bit more comfortable and if you were heading for the beach then it was even better. The winds were much stronger across

the coast line and there were big waves seen coming into the shore. Once again caution must always be taken against the strong sun as in the summer we see time and time again people suffering from being burnt especially when there is a breeze as you just don't feel it until it is really too late. I had guests with me this weekend and we went to visit the Paradise beach in La Villa Joyosa, and even after applying factor 50 sunblock they both seemed to catch the sun and were quite red by the end of the day. Not burnt thankfully but red enough to know that they were on the border line, any more and their skin would of burnt. So keep up the good work and keep yourself and others safe

and keep reminding everyone of the danger of sunburn. For sports fans this weekend it was all about the start of the Commonwealth Games from Scotland, the Formula 1 German GP and the fact that Rory McIlroy claimed his first British Open title at only 25 years of age, it was a weekend packed full of surprises. Cricket takes over the screens for the rest of the month with England taking on India for the third test as well as the football friendlies with all the premiership teams out on their pre-season tour. For those who like to know what's going on around the Costa Blanca and also looking for entertainment then read on to find out what’s coming up. I am off to enjoy the Moors and Christian Fiestas in Villa Joyosa, I've not been before but have been told it is an event not to be missed. The town becomes the centre point with roads closed and the celebrations go on throughout the night. I have in the past heard the loud blasts of the cannons when they’re reenacting the fighting, it is so loud and goes on for ages you

can hear the blasts from Benidorm and beyond!! Imagine what it’s like if you are actually there! If you are visiting one of the famous three theme parks here in Benidorm then make sure you take with you a FREE VISTA CARD you can get amazing discounts on the entrance fee and also make huge savings across the Costa Blanca. The food is the best I have ever tasted . The atmosphere is the best . The drinks are served like a piece of art work . The staff are all so friendly and lovely and relaxed. Everything is carried out to the highest standards without feeling formal. I have to mention Argentinian steak is an experience. It is something everyone must try! I hold noa gormet in the highest regard and again spending most of my nights there.

“Best service and food in Benidorm!”

Reviewed July 6, 2014 The head chef/manager of this restaurant knows what he's doing! Great food at a very reasonable price and a fantastic welcoming atmosphere. The menu is quite small but this can be justified as there seems to be only one chef who also prepares his food beautifully and quickly with a large knowledge of where his ingredients come from. His high experience and passion shows through his ability to offer alternative dishes, lovely welcome and genuine interest in his customers as well as food. It felt like we were getting fed by a friend! The only restaurant we've tipped in Benidorm and we hope to return in the future.

“Outstanding food, best Mexican restaurant on the costa Blanca!” Reviewed July 6, 2014 For all those who haven't visited sabor a mexico, it is a must visit! The food is carefully prepared by the head chef of the restaurant, and your in for a treat if you enjoy Mexican food. Me and my other half chose sabor a mexico for our final meal in Benidorm, for two reasons. A) The food is awesome, and B) I've never felt so welcome in a restaurant by both the chef and waitress. The chef speaks to each customer giving them information on the dish they've ordered. I found the chefs knowledge of food insipirational. Keep up the good work guys, and we shall definitely recommend to others.

"Authentic Mexican in Benidorm!" Jul 10, 2014 Do not miss to experience Mexican food in this restaurant we meet the good atmosphere, views and delicious food made by his own Roman, 100% Mexican Ciudad Juarez. I recommend to finish the fried banana and a splash of mezcal.

“Welcoming owners and a great afternoon spent in the bar” Reviewed July 15, 2014 We were out for a walk and stumbled across this lovely bar on the promenade, we went in and had a fantastic afternoon with Julie and Neil the owners, they were very accomodating to my very special diet and extremely helpful, what was a chance encounter turned into an absolutely lovely afternoon, after a couple of glasses of wine and coffee we left and went on our way, but assuring them that we would be back very soon, this was one of the most pleasant afternoons we spent with these very special people in there lovely establishment Highly recommended for service, food and friendly owners.

“Johns stag brekkie.” Reviewed July 15, 2014 Julie and Neil were brilliant. We found the best English brekkie in Spain, exactly what we were looking for,I'm sure we'll be back. Thankyou.

“Great, friendly place to visit! ” Reviewed July 13, 2014 This was our second visit to Benidorm together and we made sure we came back to the 7 palms after discovering it last year. Julie and Neil were as friendly as always and very welcoming. The food is fantastic with massive portions at a very reasonable price! We will definitely be coming back here on our next visit. Outstanding!

“Fantastic cocktails and bar snacks” Reviewed July 14, 2014 I didn't have dinner here, but came for cocktails and shisha on multiple nights (as they were showing the World Cup). They have comfy white leather sofas that you can lounge on while you do shisha and sip on their very generous sized cocktails. The staff are really friendly, and we received free tapas or snacks with most of our drinks which is great! The food did look amazing, I would definitely recommend Noa.

“Great place! -Well worth a visit!” Reviewed July 1, 2014 Noa Lounge & Gourmet is a great place to dine with friends and family as well as to chill out on the comfy sofa's with your friends and loved ones and enjoy the best Mojito or a deliciously prepared G&T, the place has a sleek decor and seaview. They serve the most delicious Argentine sirloin steak, and new this year they also serve yummy tapas's. The staff are very friendly and attentive! Been there a few times for dining as well as just for a relaxing drink. and we shall be back soon.. ;-)

“Great atmosphere, drinks and food at Noa!” Reviewed June 21, 2014 We had a great time at Noa; the mojito and the frozen strawberry daiquiri are an absolute must; apparently it's the best mojito in Spain, gotta have it!!!! And then the sliced sirloin beef was just delicious! Great time at Noa all in all plus amazing look over the beach.

“Nice place” Reviewed June 1, 2014 Noa is there every thing is good i liked the food, tapas,it's A very nice . The service also is very well. I have been a week ago with my friends so I was happy there..!!!!!

www.vistacostablanca.com - 23rd July - 29th July From Page 1 extremely comfortable with plush decor and a soothing calming ambiance. I sat at one of the Poker tables with Miguel Ángel to discuss what the venue had to offer. Miguel said "we have set out an amazing and exciting venue, offering visitors comfort, fun and excitement." "It's all here we have Poker, Blackjack and Roulette tables that can be enjoyed in a relaxed environment". The Benidorm Casino is the third opening for the Casino Mediterraneo Group, the other Casinos are based in Alicante and in La Zenia Boulevard Torrevieja. The tour started in the main area on the ground floor, the large carpeted room was surprisingly quiet considering that there were workers everywhere with training sessions for new staff, constructions being finished off and even the cleaner’s busy clearing up behind everyone. You could feel that the decor and construction had been undertaken with the focus on making sure that it would deliver the correct environment for people to enjoy the games. The entrance led into a section of slot machines of all shapes and sizes, I didn't have a clue about the different games and certainly wouldn't attempt to play them without someone’s help and knowledge. I immediately got the

impression that the slot machines would be a very popular area of the casino, it's the lights flashing and the sound of the machines paying out that you see in the movies but standing there surrounded by them was amazing I could easily imagine how very soon the place would be buzzing! My tour continued and Miguel had explained how the focus on all live sports had been included so wherever you were in the building you could see live TV action. They have a designated area for Live Sports Betting with giant screens and live commentary. All UK live sports TV will be shown together with the ease of being able to have a bet on the game. I was taken to the first floor which is a private room for functions all laid out ready for private Casino nights, the plan is to have regular private casino parties, some of which will be targeted specifically for the Brits. Further plans have been made for the third floor to provide a restaurant and different food offerings. Both the main Casino room and the first floor private area have a fully stocked bar and snacks are available. Whilst the final touches are being completed the confirmed date of the opening will be made public on Monday 28th and is likely to be the following Thursday 31st July. SPONSORED SWIM FOR MABS When Ann Southam from Busot heard about Stephen Sutton, who died tragically from bowel cancer in the UK at the age of 15, she was inspired to do something to mark his short life. So on the 19th June, Ann decided to do a sponsored swim in her own 8 m length swimming pool and clocked up 200 lengths amounting to 1 1/2 kilometres in 1 hour 12 minutes and raised an incredible 800 Euros. Jacqui Philips, MABS President congratulated Ann on her remarkable achievement and thanked her for the donation which will go towards supporting the newly opened MABS Hospice facility within Fontilles. Sue Reula, Director South received a cheque from Ann and thanked her for the work she does as a volunteer in the Muxtamel charity

shop along with her volunteer colleagues who were present. Ann said she hoped that when people read of her efforts, it will inspire them to do something to raise vital money to help people with cancer.

THINK GREEN

Glass recycling is on the up throughout the Valencia government region, with a four point four per cent rise in the number of people being environmentally conscious in 2013, compared to the previous year. Alicante Province alone, including the Costa Blanca, accounted for 35 million kilos of glass being recycled last year.

FEWER DEATHS

Road fatalities across Alicante Province and the Costa Blanca fell by 13% in 2013, compared to the 2012 statistics. 42 people lost their lives on the regions’ roads in last year as opposed to 48 in 2012. Safety

groups are concerned that the downward trend in death figures may be reversed, especially with speed limit rises on Spain’s motorways.

VILLAJOYOSA MOORS & CHRISTIANS FIESTA 24th - 31st July For eight days, the whole town steps back in time to hold a spectacular re-enactment of a battle fought in 1538. The festival of Moors and Christians is the biggest event of the year in Villajoyosa it is well worth visiting and is rated as one of the best in Spain. The festival has been held for over 250 years in honour of Santa Marta (St. Martha) and commemorates events which occurred in 1538, when Berber pirates led by ZalĂŠ-Arraez tried to attack Villajoyosa. According to legend, St. Martha came to the rescue of the townsfolk by causing a flash flood which wiped out the enemy fleet, thus preventing the corsairs from reaching the coast. To show their gratitude, the town made her its patron saint and hold this annual festival in her honour, the main

event being a re-enactment of the Moorish landing. The festivities commence with the fabulous processions of Moors and Christians: The various factions that make up each procession march majestically through the streets to the sound of music. The highlight is the beach landing at dawn on the 28th; while the Christians make ready their artillery to defend the shore, over 30 Moorish vessels approach the coastline. Once they have landed, both armies battle it out until they reach the foot of the castle, which is eventually taken by the Moors. Spectators begin assembling on the beach at around 5am so it is an early start should you wish to catch it. Or you can do as some of the locals do and simply stay up all night! In the afternoon, the Christian soldiers come back and retake the castle: first of all, they try to persuade the enemy to surrender, but after some unsuccessful negotiations, another great battle follows resulting in the retreat of the Moorish troops.

Villajoyosa is brimming over with fun and merriment during these festivities, so when you’re not in the heat of battle there are other events to enjoy, including concerts, dances, cooking competitions and (no Spanish fiesta is complete without one) fireworks displays. Moors and Christians is a popular festival in many parts of Spain and each place has its own original way of celebrating, depending on their particular history and tradition. The re-enactment of the landing is unique to Villajoyosa and sets it apart from all other festivals of its kind.

Brits Have More Unprotected Sex In Benidorm It may be Shagaluf Magaluf that has a tawdry reputation, but it turns out Benidorm is where the real debauchery is happening. According to the Huffington Post Benidorm has been uncovered as the Mediterranean hotspot for unprotected casual sex, according to new research into the behaviour and health of British holiday-makers. The national survey found that almost one in ten Brits (9%) have had sex with a stranger on holiday without using a condom. When asked if it happened in one of Europe’s popular summer destinations, Benidorm came out on top (12%), followed by Ayia Napa, Faliraki and Rome.Over indulgence, law breaking and sex-ploits were just some of the things revealed by the 2,029 Brits who took part in the research, which was commissioned by the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service. Excessive drinking and a ‘you only live

once’ attitude were the source of much remorse - of the under 36s, 15% regretted something they did on holiday, which they wouldn’t have done at home. The survey also found: • 45% wouldn’t necessarily get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) if they had unprotected casual sex – many only prompted to do so if they had symptoms (22%). • The under 36s admitted to most reckless holiday pursuits, including drinking alcohol to excess (31%), eating nothing but junk food (20%) and smoking more or for the first time (13%). • Almost one in 10 under 25s (9%) said embarrassing pictures or videos were posted online. • One in 50 (2%) admitted they’d performed a sex act in public. • Almost half (48%) have suffered sun burn.

The price of petrol and diesel have continued to go down over the last 2 weeks. Since the beginning of July average prices of fuel have kept on dropping, fuel prices had reached a historic high at the beginning of the high season and now as the prices continue to slowly decrease motorists are letting out a sigh of relief. Even though we have seen prices steadily decline fuel still costs 3% more than it did at the beginning of the year. Average fuel prices at the beginning of the month were €1.456 for petrol and €1.346 for diesel now we can see the average price across all providers at €1.444 for petrol and €1.327 for diesel. This means petrol has been reduced by 0.55% and

diesel 0.74%, Spain still remains under the European average for the cost for fuel, most European consumers pay a yearly average of €1.616 where as consumers in Spain pay around €1.589

FUEL PRICES CONTINUE TO DROP

COUNTRY RIBS A TASTE OF MINESSOTA Our visit to Country Ribs in Benidorm was a family affair, not just for us but because the first thing that I noticed was in this American Diner most tables in the restaurant were full of families enjoying the taste of Benidorm's most famous ribs, ranch style chicken, juicy steaks and many more specialities on the menu. The portion sizes being served around the tables were noticeably very large and therefore I decided a starter was not necessary, I really didn't want to ruin my appetite for the main course. There was lots of choice on the menu choice and offered something for everyone, there’s salads, burgers, steaks and even pizzas, for me it had to be one of the six great COMBOS, the variety is amazing but I had to make a decision so I chose ‘COUNTRY RHAPSODY’ this caught my eye as it included Hungarian Goulash together with a mixture of Chicken, Lamb, Spare Ribs and Pork Kebabs. The metal dish that the food is served in was huge and was filled with the sides of potato wedges and chips along with 4 different sauces or dips, I can honestly say the amount of food in the COMBO was enough for 3 or 4 people. For being meat lovers this combo was perfect, lamb chops were cooked over the BBQ together with the Chicken breast, the spare ribs and kebabs

made the display of meat simply incredible not to mention the dish of Hungarian Goulash a strategically positioned in the centre of the display. My guests ordered a variety of other popular meals, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger, chicken Caesar salad and the star of the show was the full rack of baby back ribs with a choice of 4 tasty sauces. The size of the rack of ribs simply amazed me it took over the plate, served with the Jack Daniels & Coke sticky BBQ sauce. The meat was falling off the bone and was perfectly cooked complemented with the tangy original JD & Coke sauce and a Smokey but sweet BBQ flavour. Our bench style table had plenty of space to sit our group of five adults plus the attachment of a high chair to the end of the table that was clamped in place by the very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant was taken over by families so it was

great to see that there was no shortage of high chairs and the mums and dads could enjoy their meals while the smaller ones were also taking part at the table. Country Ribs have been situated in Benidorm for many years and have built up their reputation for the quality of food in a relaxed American style diner, ideal for families with children as well as enjoyed by adult groups out for their party night. Country Ribs also have a beach front restaurant in Albir that offers a great outside ranch style terrace overlooking the promenade with spectacular views across the sea to Calpe. The Weekly Buzz team had an amazing night at Country Ribs Benidorm and have awarded them the Weekly Buzz GOLD STAR RECOMMENDATION. Go along and see for yourself, take the amazing adventure of dining at Country Ribs and tell Pepe and his staff that you have read this in the Weekly Buzz!

CARTAGENA Port of Cultures

The maritime enclave of Cartagena was already known to the Carthaginians and Romans, and its name today comes from the Latin name, Cartago Nova. Cartagena was under Arab domination until Ferdinand III the Saint reconquered it and incorporated it into the kingdom of Castile. Its port played a key role in the War of Succession and the Peninsular Wars. Today the city is a major naval station, one of the most important in the western Mediterranean. It has a population of 218,210 inhabitants. Cartagena has been inhabited for over two millennia, being founded around 227 BC as Qart Hadasht during the Phoenician conquest. The city lived its heyday during the Roman Empire, then it suffered a period of ups and downs during the Umayyad invasion of Hispania, under its Arabic name of Qartayannat al-Halfa. For a bird´s eye view of the famous harbour why not catch the “Barco Turístico”, which leaves at half past every hour, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm from the quayside near La Patatacha floating restaurant , and costs €5. It goes to the Fuerte de la Navidad, which opens 1 0 a m 2.30pm and 4pm-7pm daily except Mondays, admission costs €3.50. Built in the 18th century, la Navidad was intended to guard the entrance to the port of Cartagena by laying down crossfire with the battery of Trincabotijas, opposite. It was restored in 2006 as part of the ongoing project to make Cartagena more tourist-friendly. For a different perspective, climb the hill above the castle and look back over one of nature's great harbours and its city. Save yourself a euro and don't bother with the lift up to La Concepción Castle. Instead walk up from Calle Gisbert opposite the old 18th century Autopsy Pavilion, which was built outside the hospital so that it did not upset the patients. It's a stiff climb but it takes in great views of the old bull ring, built on top of a Roman gladiatorial arena, the 18th-century autopsy theatre and the interior of the old cathedral. Follow signs to the mirador (panoramic point) for great photos of the harbour. At the top you can pay €3.50, to visit the castle interpretive centre which opens 10am-7pm daily except Mondays. It tells the story of Cartagena from its settlement by Hasdrubal in 227 BC. Alternatively, if you do not fancy all that climbing there is a very pleasant amble to be had along

the city walls if you get on at the Puertas de San Jose tourist office, and follow Muralla del Mar south to Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The amphitheatre is an impressive achievement of the Romans and was carved into the hill side rock near the port; it has been dated to approximately 1 BC. It was excavated to generate the tiered bowl of an amphitheatre which would have held 6,000 people. It was destroyed by a fire and its remains were built over, then it was not re-discovered until the 1980’s, but since then it has been preserved and remains part of Catagena’s heritage. The museum stands on the site of the original Roman necropolis of San Antón, built at the end of the 4th century AD. The museum now contains some of the most important ancient inscriptions in Spain. Your weekly Horoscopes Aries -

The thing you want to achieve most this week is harmony and balance at home, and everyone working on the same page at work. Keep both factions separate, whilst paying equal attention to each. The latter end of the week brings disappointments but nothing you cant handle.

Libra -

Taurus -

Scorpio -

Your professional life is highlighted this week which can either mean you’re being promoted where you are, heading off into a new exciting direction, or actually getting work if you’ve been unemployed. No matter how you look at it, it’s a step in the right direction.

_

Gemini -

Circumstances are improving over your financial status, and you’ll find you actually have a good head on your shoulders for most of this week. You’ll make a favourable impression of the people who matter in your working life, and that leaves you feeling great.

Capitalise on everything the big wide world has to offer you and make sure you do what you can to avoid being stuck at home doing nothing. Get involved in group related activities. The bigger the group, the more fun you’ll have. Communications are great.

e

Sagittarius -

What goes on in and around your home has always been the backbone of your existence and this week is no different. Focus your attention on family matters and you’ll feel warm and cocooned in everyone’s love. Need support? All you have to do is ask.

Leo -

The lunar low advises you to adopt a more low key approach. I know you have many issues burning in the back of your mind, but taking a day or two to centre yourself is the best thing you could do. Allow any confusion over communications to abate before making comment.

Aquarius -

Virgo -

Pisces -

A relaxed easy going approach works best when you’re with friends this week, and dividing your life between responsibility and enjoyment shouldn’t be that hard to master. Every now and then stop in your tracks and consider if plans are going the way you want.

Scribble Pad

There’s every reason to amp up the tempo of your life this week, so when others fall by the wayside, you’ll still be keeping up a steady rhythm. Be willing to change direction mid stream if things don’t go the way you’d expected. That should get them paying attention now.

You’ll feel frustrated if you think others are keeping you out of the loop at work, but you have more important things to worry about, and that’s your career and health. Focus on what’s important to you and let everyone else get on with it. Watch your money.

g

With the lunar high activated you can afford to act on impulse and make snap decisions. The originality of your nature is on display and you wont have any bother attracting people into your sphere. You come across to others as quite different and quite outrageous.

h

Make sure you don’t double book yourself this week or you’ll get into a fairly frantic panic and could end up messing up. Keep work and pleasure separate. Get someone to help you map out your diary. As bigger goals and objectives come into the equation you’ll need to be more organised.

Hatton Garden has been London's jewellery quarter for more than 200 years. Located north-west of the City, it's a half-mile stretch where millions of pounds of gold, silver and precious stones are bought and sold every day. This documentary goes behind the scenes, meeting the wheelers and dealers and bespoke designers working in the area, from a trader who conducts the sale of a diamond ring in the back of a taxi, to a metal reclamation expert who gives an insight into her often mucky job.

Last Saturday the seventh edition of the night walk organized by the Department of Sports L'Alfas del Pi was performed in collaboration with the Department of Sports Altea, and the association of Nordic Walking. The walk began in the sports area of the river in Altea where buses moved the participants to the barrier of Guadalest starting point of the longest walk which was a total of 20 km. The shortest hike was 15 km and was beginning a little before reaching the same dam, in Guadalest. The organization had provided two aid stations at mile markers 9 and 15 of the walk the walk began and ended in Guadalest

beaches in Altea This edition was extremely successful thanks to 300 walkers of all ages. This hike is organised so it always coincides with the full moon in the month of June which offers its participants, which incidentally are of different nationalities, the opportunity to make the descent from Altea to Guadalest by the river, in the light of the moon and with a soft night breeze lightens the walk. The main organisation is in the hands of the Nordic Walking Association which like every year ensures there’s 4x4 support in supplying water to the participants, and a car available to help in case of possible injuries.

In the main Avenida D' Albir coming from the N332 you will find the market it is easy to find. The number 10 bus from Benidorm takes you to Albir or for a little more fun take the open to city tour bus. There is no better way to spend your Sunday morning early brekie and then off to the market. Albir offers one of the best markets in the area, a huge range of clothes, jewellery, fashion items and leather goods. Also local fruit and vegetables and of course the best spit roast chickens to take home for lunch or a late afternoon salad. There are over 100 stalls offering bargain prices on just about everything you could possibly want for your home or if your on holiday some fantastic gifts to take back for your friend and family. Even if you are not likely to want to take much back due to those luggage restrictions, the atmosphere is reason enough to spend a few hours here. There are lots of smaller items such as handmade stylish jewellery and loads of Nic-Nacs for just a few Euros that will certainly tempt you to buy as well as the favourite souvenirs. If you are shopping for Sunday lunch or perhaps on holiday staying as self-catering then Albir market is perfect to pick up fresh produce such as sliced meats, ham, fresh bread and pallets of in season strawberries at only 2 euro for two kilos! Vegetable stalls

sell a fantastic range of cheap veg that has not travelled far as almost all of it comes from nearby growers, helping to keep the local economy going. If you are nuts about nuts and have a sweet tooth, then look out for the pitch that sells simply nuts. When you get tired of mooching around there are several eateries to put your feet up and enjoy a ice cold beer and snack. The market is all but over by 2pm so arrive early and take your time and consider staying for lunch at one of the very many local restaurants that offer almost anything you could wish to eat. You one chance needed! Hi, I would love to tell you about my life. For three years I have lived in Benidorm Pound. I was born here, yes Born here! I hav never had love, affection, cuddles, a warm bed. I was shut in a pen with my Mother and other dogs untill the kind volunteers noticed me in the corner. Cowering, scared, afraid of human company and slowly a volunteer called Rosalia took pity on me and started to try to talk to me. To sit with me in the pen and to be patient with me. She showed me a lead and well yes it took a while but in the end I was happy to put me head through that loop. Now I look forward to my two short walks a week. I really am good on a lead and if introduced to a home and real love....well then life would be fantastic. I just need one chance. Please help me! For more dogs please check out our facebook page Benidorm Dog Pound needs your help to raise funds to treat our dogs in need. We need you to help us walk our dogs and socialise them to be ready to move into a new home. You can donate unwanted items to our stall on a Saturday at El Cisne. Donate funds using paypal at yeso1977@hotmail.com. How about spending an hour or two with us walking the dogs any day between Monday and Saturday 10am to 1pm. We love meeting you and so do the dogs. Call Maria on 0034 677 37 33 96. If you can bring leads along then that

would be fantastic too. Another way to help is to become a cyber buddy for a dog. We have so many dogs that a lot don’t ever leave the pound and end up dead one morning on a cold concrete floor. A cyber buddy changes that and you can help from anywhere in the world. It’s easy to do and makes a huge difference to a dog finding a new forever home. It takes just 2-3 minutes a day for you!

DUTCH CONSULATE TO CLOSE

The Dutch Foreign ministry, aiming to reduce costs by 20 percent, is closing several embassies and consulates. The La Nucia Dutch consulate is due to close on the 1st of September, the office currently has 120,000 Dutch nationals in need of their services in the Valencian Community, The Dutch Foreign ministry is having to make drastic cut backs and the La Nucia consulate is just one of many embassies and consulates due to be closed. Consulate Erick Duriex has said roughly half (of the Dutch Nationals) live in Benidorm and the Alicante province including areas such as Denia and Torrevieja. He went on to add that more than 1,400 people are registered on the Padron

for La Nucia although the number is closer to 2,500. The Dutch minister of foreign affairs has been written to by the La Nucia Town Hall stating how important the consulate is, “It handles more procedures than the Barcelona office and has the largest workload in Spain, owing to Alicante Province’s large Dutch community,” said Bart Gommans councillor for Foreign Residents. The consulate does not incur much expense for the Dutch government. In the future Dutch residents will have to visit or contact the embassy in Madrid, although residents of the Marina Baja area are fighting the closure with a petition, the petition so far has more than 5,000 signatures and that is expected to continue to rise.

DR. HILARY JONES VISITS THE FAMILY MEDICAL CENTRE The Family Medical Centre in Albir had a very special visitor on Thursday of last week. The well known and loved Dr Hilary Jones from ITV´s Lorraine Kelly show visited the centre to discuss health care provision for expats and holiday makers. Dr Hilary was also very interested to find out how and why Nurses Dawn and Amanda came to set up their own Medical Centre. Amanda explained, “Dawn and I have worked together with GPs here in Spain for the last 8 years. When our last job ended due to retirement of the Doctor we decided to set up our own Practice. We had a very clear idea of the type of environment we wanted to create and services we wished to provide for the community” Nurse owned medical centres are not something that you come across every day and you certainly get the feeling that there is something different about this place. From the warm and welcoming décor to the lively, chatty atmosphere in the waiting room. Dr Hilary fitted in perfectly! Many people including expats are struggling financially at the moment. Expat pensioners have seen their pensions shrink and many workers are on minimum

wage. Dawn and Amanda explained that in light of this they decided to set the consultation fee at 38 euros to see a GP, Nurse or Midwife. Dr Hilary asked about SIP cards and EHIC cards. Dawn and Amanda explained that although many people are entitled to health care on the Spanish health system they come to the Family Medical Centre for a variety of reasons. Dawn explained “the main reason our patients feel so comfortable is that we are all English speaking. Many holiday makers tentatively come into reception and very slowly say ‘do….you… .speak….English?’ and when we answer ‘yes, I am

renowned for making nervous patients immediately feel at ease as soon as they step into our clinic. There are no grouchy receptionists or pompous medical staff here!!” Patients and the crowd that gathered, were delighted to meet the famous TV Doctor who was charming and happy to have his photograph taken with his fans (mostly female!). He interviewed several patients in the waiting room. They explained how happy they are to come to the Medical centre with it´s unique happy and friendly atmosphere and caring staff. The show will be aired in about 2 weeks time.

English, how can I help you?’ their relief is immeasurable! Also, for our ‘resident’ patients who are entitled to care on the Spanish health care system, they often prefer to speak to a doctor or nurse in their own language, especially if their problem is of a sensitive nature. We are also

ROSBERG COASTS TO GOOD WEEK FIRST GERMAN GRAND PRIX WIN JUDD ‘TRUMPS’ ROBERTSON

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg coasted to his first home German Grand Prix win at Hockenheim on Sunday to extend his lead over teammate Lewis Hamilton in the Formula One championship. Williams' Valtteri Bottas took second, with Hamilton in third after muscling his way up through the pack from 20th on the grid. Rosberg's fourth win of the season, cheered on by Germany World Cup winner Lukas Podolski in the Mercedes garage, lifted him on to 190 points. The 2008

champion Hamilton is now 14 points adrift. There was drama at the start when the Williams of Felipe Massa, starting from the second row, somersaulted spectacularly. The Brazilian's car came to rest in the safety gravel and he walked away unscathed after the accident triggered when Kevin Magnussen's McLaren clipped the rear of his car. For Rosberg the result capped a memorable week in which he watched his country's footballers win the World Cup, married his longtime girlfriend and signed a new deal with Mercedes. on 1st lap

Judd Trump saw off home favourite Neil Robertson in the Australian Goldfields Open final on Sunday. Trump claimed the $75,000 (£43,700) prize in Bendigo after wrapping up a 9-5 win, his fourth ranking title. The 24year-old Englishman kept his opponent at bay having gone into the final session 5-3 ahead from the opening one. Sunday's first six frames were shared, with Trump making the bigger breaks of 50 and 71 before runs of 55 and 114 gave him the last two of the earlier session.

BAD WEEK TOUGH START FOR ENGLAND

TAYLOR SHINES IN BLACKPOOL

Phil Taylor began the defence of his World Matchplay title in impressive fashion as Raymond van Barneveld comfortably came out on top in an all-Dutch battle in Blackpool. With his new darts finding the target in impressive fashion, Taylor managed to record a 101.79 three-dart average as he recorded a 10-3 win over former practice partner Darren Webster. 'The Demolition Man' took the first leg against the throw and then needed only 12 darts to make it 2-2, though his hopes of an upset were quickly reduced to rubble. Taylor took the next five legs on the spin to open up a comfortable cushion and hit a superb bull, bull, double 16 out-shot to wipe out 132 and move to the brink of victory. "It was a good game. That's the best I've played all year, to be quite honest with you," 'The Power' told said afterwards. "He was gutsy, he's got a lot of bottle has Darren. He just doesn't give up. I

Ishant Sharma bowled India to a 95-run win over England, and a 1-0 series lead, on the final day of the second Test at Lord's. GERRARD QUITS INTERNATIONALS England captain Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from international football. The Liverpool midfielder quits as his country's third-most capped player having made 114 appearances over a 14-year international career.

Gerrard delayed a decision on his future in the immediate aftermath of this summer's World Cup, but a substitute's appearance in a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte will be his last in England colours. "I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country and it is a sad day for me knowing that I won't pull on the England shirt again," said the 34-year-old, who will take up a role as an FA ambassador. "However, I do look forward to continuing my strong relationship with The FA and helping out in any way I can going forward. "I'd like to firstly thank my family and friends for all their support throughout my England journey. I'd also like to thank everyone who has been part of my international career, from the England Managers I've played under to the staff at The FA and, of course, all the players I've been fortunate to play alongside. "In particular, the supporters have been amazing, not least in Brazil when they got behind the team despite the disappointing results. Gerrard made his England debut against Ukraine in May 2000 and went on to captain the side 38 times, earning two England Player of the year awards along the way. Hodgson said: "While I’m disappointed in the decision, I can entirely understand Steven’s situation and can have no complaints given the incredible service he has given to his country.

TRANSFER UPDATES

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra joins Juventus.

fee for the Cardiff captain and the deal has now moved a step closer. Mats Hummels is set to choose to join Manchester United. The 25-year-old is likely to cost around £16million should be make the switch to Old Trafford. It has been said that moves are afoot to bring for-

mer Chelsea striker Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge next season, possibly in a player-coach role. Toni Kroos has revealed he "wanted a change", but only decided to move to Real Madrid from Bayern Munich after winning the World Cup with Germany. Arsenal have allowed Brazilian winger Wellington Silva to link up with Spanish side Almeria on a seasonlong loan. Federico Macheda says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was key to his decision to join Cardiff City. The Italian striker, who is just 22 years of age, has severed ties with Man United after seven years.

MCILROY COMPLETES OPEN TRIUMPH

Rory McIlroy claimed his first Open title with a twoshot victory at Royal Liverpool, but Sunday was far from the expected stroll for the Northern Irishman. He started the day with a six-shot lead and that had been whittled down to just two over Sergio Garcia with three holes to play. But to his credit McIlroy held his n e r v e a d m i r a b l y, making a twoputt birdie on 16 to stretch his lead to three. He followed that by getting up and down from 40 yards at 17 for a par, then made par five at 18 for a oneunder 71. McIlroy finished two clear of Garcia w h o endured yet another nearmiss at a major champ i o -

nship despite a closing 66 - and American Ricky Fowler. Fowler birdied three of the last four holes to card a 67 and has now finished fifth, second and second in the year's majors. It is the 10th time that Garcia has finished in the top five at a major and he is still to break his duck. In stark contrast, his third major title means McIlroy will head to Augusta next year bidding to complete a career

grand slam at the age of 25. McIlroy is already the first European player to win three different majors since the Masters was founded in 1934. Even greats such as Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros won just two of the four. The Northern Irishman becomes just the third man in the modern era after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win three majors by the age of 25, while the first prize of £975,000 was not the only windfall for the McIlroy family his father Gerry and three friends each won £50,000 after putting £100 on the 15-year-old at 500-1 a decade ago to lift the Claret Jug before his 26th birthday. Back up to second in the world rankings, McIlroy needs to win the Masters to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only men to have won all four majors. He led by four shots going into the final round at Augusta in 2011 only to collapse to a closing 80.
