100 YEARS ON This week the British newspapers were covered with headlines to mark the 100th year since the start of the First World War. Most of us British expats have family connections back home who would of seen the many tributes and ceremonies taking place all over the country, sometimes given to remember those who died for their country and so many of whom were very young. Continued from page 1...The 4th of August 2014 marked the anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War – known as The Great War, with fighting continuing until the 11th of November 1918, Armistice Day. The Royal British Legion was founded by British veterans in the aftermath of the First World War and is at the forefront of Centenary commemorations. As we come together in remembrance of events a century ago, we are reminded of the important welfare work the Legion continues to provide today and will need to provide in the future. A century on from the First World War, those serving in the Armed Forces, veterans and their families still call on us for help with almost every aspect of daily life. The problems facing First World War veterans when they returned to the UK continue to affect serving personnel and veterans today: whether living with bereavement or disability, finding employment, or coping with financial stress. Our grandparents and their parents lived through these terrible times and gave up their lives for our future. On Monday 4th August the members of the local branch of the Royal British Legion met up to mark this special occasion. The Poppy Tea Dance that took place in Alfaz del Pi. I went along to talk to some of the members and also had the pleasure of meeting the district Chairman Nigel Hails. Nigel looks after all of the Royal British Legion branches from the North of

Spain from the French border down to Baza at the tip of Andalucia this area includes 19 individual branches of the RBL and the geographical size is larger than the UK. Nigel formerly served in the British Army, he has now lived in Spain for 8 years and joined the RBL to enjoy the prospect of meeting people and giving up time to help the cause of the legion. Nigel told me a little about his role. "My role is to ensure that the members within the districts abide to the requirements and charter of the RBL. The job I do is simply to help administer the requirements and to ensure compliance especially with the very strict financial controls over the funding. We had attended the Poppy Tea Dance in remembrance of the conflict of World War 1 and our meeting up has given us the opportunity to discuss all of the aspects of the RBL. Membership of the Royal British Legion is open to all, there are no age limits and you do not have to have served in the forces. So why would you want to join? I talked to Pamela Dawson Tasker the branch chair person who explained that for most people it gave them an opening to the social scene that includes meeting British people in the area and of course living in Spain this is very useful and important for ex-pats. Coffee mornings are held on a regular basis And a full diary of events that you can read about on page 3 of the local Weekly Buzz Newspaper.

WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT TELLS US Restaurante Sidreria Aurrera Martinez Oriola 18, 03501 Benidorm, “Go for the lamb” Reviewed 23 June 2014 My second visit to this restaurant was as good as the first, I ordered the roast suckling lamb. If lamb can be cooked better I am yet to find it served with lightly sautéed potatoes. The whole leg of lamb takes up most of the plate. and the meat falls from the bone. My son did not get his first choice of meal a particular type of shell fish was not available, however he was not disappointed whit his alternative choice. As a previous poster has said it looks a bit expensive from the outside. We ate off the main menu so it was probably a bit bearer than most of the meals we ate in Benidorm (around €25.00 a head) But oh so worth it. Most of the front of house staff are not good English speakers, but this didn't detract from the meal. If anything a complaint if I have one when we asked for the bill we got liqueurs it seems to be something they do, and It just took ages to be able to settle up. As we had an appointment later in the Old Town we where nearly late because of this. Had it have been a different night where I didn't have to go somewhere else I probably wouldn't have noticed. Thoroughly recommend if you are looking for somewhere special to round off your holiday.

“Superb meal” Reviewed 3 June 2014Just out looking for a decent restaurant on our last night in Benidorm. Stumbled across this place thinking it appeared a bit expensive but thought we would give it a go. How wrong could we be, I had the set menu deal and all I can say is wow. Baby Peppers and Chirizo sausages followed 2nd course of fresh cod. Then a very large Ox chop and wedges, all finshed off with a Crème Caramel, all for 25 euros each. Oh, and half a bottle of a very nice Rioja in the price as well. There were 15 in our party, some had fish and steak dishes which were equally as good. There were comments of one of the best fillet steaks some had eaten. i did taste the fillet and again wow. Definately will go again if in Benidorm old town. Food and service 10/10

"Best of Benidorm" Reviewed 23 July 2014 I've been going 13 years with family, friends, couples ... and always a great time. Excellent food and better treatment, congratulations!

"Great food and good treatment" Reviewed 19 July 2014 Nice restaurant in a place where food is abundant touristy. The lounge is very welcoming, very friendly and courteous, and the food excellent. The yogurt salad is spectacular.

"Quality and excellent treatment" Reviewed 4 July 2014 Quality dishes, show cooking customer with great professionals, is a must for people who already know Benidorm and for those who do not know. All dishes are recommended, meats, fish, salads, dishes. Above all, the price, good value. In my opinion, one of the more upscale restaurants in Benidorm.

“Great food and excellent customer service!!” Reviewed 28 July 2014 Had lunch here today and would 100% recommend eating here when visiting benidorm! We have visited places on the beach front and in the old town and this place beats them all on quality of food and customer service! Fantastic place and will definitely be revisiting :)

“Best place to eat in Benidorm!!” Reviewed 21 July 2014 I never usually write reviews but I feel as though this place deserves one. There is not one thing I can fault, English breakfasts really are English breakfasts here!!!! Amazing quality food and worth every penny and more

“Amazing food at great prices” Reviewed 16 July 2014 Service was amazing even when 19 of us turn't up for food. Ate here for 3 days and couldn't fault it or its staff in anyway. Staff were very welcoming and extremely friendly. Deffo recommend this place to anyone visiting Benidorm...

“Totally fantastic” Reviewed 24 June 2014 Just finished our second meal in as many days always cooked fresh fantastic service value and food I am writing this review on the fast free with fi will come again

“Best trip yet” Reviewed 28 May 2014 The Penny Farthing has been Abercarn RFC's home in Benidorm for many years, so it was with a certain amount of intrepidation that we ventured back this year. The new owners Steve & Fiona were just brilliant hosts, nothing is too much trouble for them. The food quality is just perfect and always served with a smile, and when 27 hungry and thirsty guys decend on the place, they were more than able to cope. Well done to Kieth & Andy & Andy's wife, you made our week. Keep up the good work guys, see you in Wales

“good food, friendly staff” Reviewed 8 May 2014 we called in penny farthing after Wednesday market....we had fish, chips and mushy peas...was really nice and reasonably priced...staff were really friendly and inviting too.

“Excellent” Reviewed 11 March 2014 We came across this cafe by accident in feb.So glad we did. Food is first class. All freshly cooked. Best breakfast around.we came back in march with other friends julie and mike who also luv it. the staff are great. Steve and his wife are lvly.really friendly cant do enough for you. So areball the staff..Please dont listen to any bad reviews. I dont know what's the matter with some people. we were given wine on the house which was nice. We highly reccomend this place.

HAVE YOUR SAY!

“Just brilliant ” Reviewed 31 July 2014 Had a fantastic meal so good going back Saturday to try out other things on the menu. Rack of lamb was mouth watering would highly recommend.

“A quality restaurante at a reasonable price” Reviewed 28 July 2014 We were a party of four and were greeted as soon as we walked in and shown to a table. Minutes later the waiter arrived with a complimentary drink. What a pleasant start ,but things just got better. Our order was taken and our starter arrived in due course. The presentation was superb, worthy of a five star restaurant, You just knew it would taste good and it did. Our main meal was just as good, just as well presented and cooked to perfection, exactly how we had asked for it to be cooked and all our sweets were home made. The Sun Garden restaurant is fairly new and therefore fairly quiet. I just hope as the word spreads, people will find out just how nice it really is. We certainly will be visiting it regularly.

“A Hidden Gem” Reviewed 28 July 2014 We visited last night and had the most exquisite food- the chef is clearly talented and everything was cooked perfectly. Cost was very reasonable for the standard. As it's a fairly new restaurant and it's away from the Main Street it was very quiet. We will definitely return while staying here and can't recommend this restaurant enough. We are a family of foodies and, this restaurant is one of the best we have visited. The food is fresh, presentation is wonderful - and it's nice to see something different in the area. Well worth five stars.....

“This restaurant deserves it's No1 placing!!!” Reviewed 27 July 2014 We have now visited this restaurant on several occasions both in small groups of 4 but also in a large party of 30 - the quality and presentation of the food is excellent and the service cannot be faulted. The menu is limited as all food served is fresh, but we are hoping that as word spreads about this superb restaurant then there will be wider menu choices. I say this due to the fact that we live here and would very much like to taste more of what I'm sure would be very good food!

“Brilliant!” Reviewed 6 July 2014 Sun Garden is definitely the place that will not fail you on quality. Both food and service top class! Nice and relaxing surroundings as well. Menu is rather small so to ensure all ingredients are super fresh and tasty. Owner/Front of House very friendly and genuinely does care, goes extra mile every single time. I strongly recommend also for value for money!

KEEP YOUR PASSPORT SAFE PASSENGERS WARNED British holidaymakers arriving at Alicante airport this summer are being confronted with banners warning them to keep their passports safe, as part of a campaign to reduce further the number of British nationals who lose their passport or have it stolen whilst on holiday on the Costa Blanca. Alicante airport has agreed with the British Consulate in Alicante to display banners in the arrivals area, warning tourists that losing their passports will cause frustration and inconvenience as they miss out on valuable holiday time whilst they visit the Consulate and pay for an emergency passport to get home. Over two million British travellers, who make up 45% of

all those who use the airport, will see the banners titled “Lose your passport, lose your holiday” as they head for passport control. They

will again be reminded of the message when they get to the b a g g a g e reclaim area. P o s t e r s encouraging Britons to look after their valuables, especially their passports, will also be displayed in all the main tourist information offices across the Valencia region. Every year the Consulate in Alicante issues around 1000 emergency passports at a euro equivalent cost of 95 pounds each. It’s a number that British consul, Paul Rodwell, is keen to reduce. Says Paul:, “We want to prevent British nationals from getting into trouble in the first place. Everyone arriving in Alicante is being reminded to think about where they’re going to keep their passport for the duration of their stay. My advice: lock it away somewhere safe and, if you have to take it with you, keep it in a zipped bag or pocket to ensure a hassle-free holiday. “Partnership is key in preventing consular and tourist authorities for agreeing to display these banners and posters free of charge.”

CRISSY ROCK HAS THE WRITING BUG Crissy Rock is famous to most of us thanks to ITV's sunny sitcom Benidorm, after her autobiography This Heart Within Me Burns in 2012 made the top ten best-seller list, she got the writing bug. She's recently released a tense thriller called Revenge Is Sweeter than Flowing Honey about paganism and the church, and she has recently returned from filming the new series of Benidorm, Crissy spoke to Eamonn

Holmes and Ruth Langsford about her latest exploits on This Morning. Revealing all she could about her Benidorm return, Crissy said: "I've come back for revenge. Well, we can’t say too much...but I’m back with a vengeance." The comedienne is delighted to have been a part of

such an iconic British show. She said: "I was in the right place at the right time. I watched Benidorm come from a tiny seed to blossom into the series it is and I’m privileged to be a part of it."

MOBILITY SCOOTERS GET REGISTERED Following a huge amount ofcomplaints about drunken tourists, especially younger holiday makers, racing along Benidorm's promenades and streets on mobility scooters, the council took action and introduced a new bylaw that obliged companies that hired them to register them with the town hall. Mobility councillor Mª Carmen Martínez said this week that the council now has a census of over 600 such vehicles and that the companies and hotels that hire them out have presented all of the documentation needed to the town hall.

The news was confirmed by Scotland's Royal Lyceum Theatre, where Kenny was creative director for over a decade until 2003. the theatre said in a statement "An outspoken supporter of cutwilture in Scotland, and in particular the value of theatre in public life, Kenny Ireland was a strong proponent of a National

Theatre for Scotland and a genuine, passionate champion of the arts "He is an important part of the Lyceum’s story and of the story of theatre in Scotland and he will be greatly missed.".In Benidorm, he played Donald Stewart alongside actress Janine Duvitski. NEW GO KART TRACK GEARED UP

We had previously told you about the new Go-Karting track when construction was halted over a dispute of building licenses, since then it has seems the company has managed to regain permission to continue construction. Over the last few weeks we have seen lots of activity starting with a huge amount of tarmac being put down and flattened out. From there we have seen them already draw out and paint the track outline, there seems to be lots of turns and corners which will be great fun for those thrill seekers. They have finished the track off with a whole lot of used tyres, out of nowhere we have seena massive mountain of tyres appear and slowly be sistributed round the track. Over the last couple of days they have been putting up some fencing on the site which is a slight inconvenience as it is much harder to grab a glimpse of activities while driving by. The new Go Kart track has been under scrutiney from local organisations and businesses believeing that the opening of the track will cause a huge amount of noise pollution and have a direct efeect on their businesses, we will be bringing you the latest news on the track in the next issue and will try and find an opening date! If you are a business owner or live nearby please contact us with your thoughts and opinions, we love to hear from our readers and hear what they have to say. Thetrack can be found on the old N332, just passed the BP petrol station next to the nightclubs, on the way out of Benidorm towards Alfas and Albir.

On the last Sunday of the month you can find the Royal British Legion at El Cisine Market on the N332 raising funds and meeting people. Last year fund raising here in the region increased by 104%. The annual Gala ball is held at the end of January in the Hotel Albir Gardens. Members on holiday in the area are also welcome to join in, the RBL web site informs its members visiting Spain about the local events. I asked Nigel "So where does the money raised in Spain actually go? Nigel explained "Emergency funds are available for anyone here in Spain who may need help to travel back to the UK as an emergency also for the help and support of the many ex services personnel who may find themselves in need of financial help". "The money raised here in Spain is used here in Spain and any surplus is sent to the UK where the continued financial input is required for the service men and women of today who

are injured or killed in the many conflicts that they are and have been serving". The legion spend approximately ÂŁ1.5 million each week to provide care and support and nearly a quarter of those getting the help are below the age of 44 and as your as 18 years old. We all recognise the Poppy Appeal and each year this appeal raises around 36 million pounds. TERRA NATURA SAY TIGER POPULATION DOWN 97%

Experts at Terra Natura park have expressed their concern about the high rate of extinction of wild tigers. In fact, it is estimated that in the last 100 years the population of wild tigers has declined by 97%. To raise awareness of this problem, the professional team of the resort havr launched an awareness campaign. It is estimated that there are currently only about 3,000 tigers living in the wild compared to the 100,000 who lived decades ago. This and other information about the tigers and their survival will be addressed in the talks that have been organized for the awareness campaign. The professionals have pointed out that three subspecies of tiger are already extinct. The extinction of these animals is due to habitat loss, as they have seen their natural habitat reduced by 93% due to the expansion of cities and farming. Declining ecosystems cause the tigers to be more vulnerable to poaching and have more conflicts with humans. Climate change is another of the most serious conservation threats to this species, as rising sea levels affecting many of the habitats where they

live. During the campaign there will be a special emphasis on the need to buy food and household products that contain palm oil obtained from reliable sources, wood products certified with the Forest stewardship Council (FSC), and not buying any medicine or objects made from parts of tiger and sign the petitions to close tiger farms in China to help promote the protection of this animal. Terra Natura Benidorm contributes to tiger conservation through captive breeding programs that have allowed the birth of a baby tiger, called Kali, in 2010. Likewise, the park conducts educational activities, assists in raising funds to finance actions for conservation and research. The park maintains in its facilities two subspecies of tiger, bengal (Panthera tigris tigris) and Sumatran (Panthera tigris sumatrae). Currently, the Sumatran tiger is one of the worst conserved subspecies, barely surviving in the wild about 500 are left. Because of this fact, this tiger is part of the European program of conservation of endangered species (EEP), which Terra Natura is a part of.

Food & Drink Nuevo Alcazar-La Nucia If you like good food then you will absolutely love this place, it’s tranquil, spacious and so inviting. The cuisine offers a wide range of international dishes that has all of the favourites from around Europe.

The Buzz team went along to meet Christopher the owner and his team to discover more about the cuisine at Restaurant Nuevo Alcazar. The setting is combined of a large terrace featuring a centre piece water feature, together with an open dining room leading out onto the terrace also the main restaurant that is split over two levels. The decor is attractive colonial style with decorative pillars and leather upholstered furniture. The table setting is stylish and is complemented with a service that is impeccable. Our choice of starters were Carpaccio of Beef Rossini served with goose liver gratin and truffle oil dressing. The other plate was a Trio of Seafood that combined North Sea Shrimps with king prawns and scampi each served individually onto a salad. The choice of starters on the menu were extensive and there was a selection of Cold and Warm options also a selection of homemade soups. As the temperature of the evening was in the high twenties and my summer appetite had arrived, I wanted to enjoy a healthy lighter dish, so the Seafood Trio was a perfect choice. It was fresh and cool and with a tasty

tangy dressing, presented well and extremely enjoyable. The Carpaccio of beef Rossini was a mouth-watering combination that melted away in your mouth and in fact the toast served on the side had been forgotten as the meat was so good it really wasn't needed and was only remembered after we had finished. For main course I was tempted by the variety of fish dishes but unfortunately on this occasion the fish on the menu will have to wait until next time. Although I would like to mention that the menu offers the best choice of fish that you will find anywhere in the Costa Blanca., there was turbot, cod, monkfish and salmon that all play a big part in the menu as well as others. I decided

on the Fillet of Steak with a red wine sauce and goose liver pate, the Rack of Lamb was tempting but I love my steaks, I had it cooked medium which came out fabulous and it was served with a cauliflower and complemented with a potato cake. The other main was Fillet of Pork with cognac and cream sauce with onion and pear, with a choice of sautĂŠ potatoes and French fries were served on the side. The portion sizes were generous and we were absolutely delighted with the quality of the food. There is also fresh lobster on the menu with five varieties to choose from, a Children's menu that has been designed with a variety of the younger generations favourites. The chef, Javier Boccalandro and his team combine the French, Belgian, and Mediterranean cuisines into enticing dishes, prepared with only the best fresh ingredients, they are used to serving a full restaurant of nearly 200 covers most evenings with the visitors coming from far around and have been coming back over and over through the years. I had noticed there was a table arrangement in the restaurant which was prepared for a party that seated 20 and after talking with Christophe he explained that they hosted a variety of parties most evenings. They also have their own extensive wine cellar that holds over 100 Spanish and French wines that simply compliment the excellent service and exceptional setting. This magnificent building is located on the CV70 on the roundabout number six coming from Benidorm towards La Nucia. We were mostly impressed with the quality of the cooking together with the presentation of the dishes. A first class recommendation from us at the Buzz Newspaper.

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES wE19

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) You’re not known for being obsessive, especially in the emotional vein, but someone has grabbed your attention and you’re becoming increasingly besotted. You’re finding it hard to be objective about this person, but you’ll have to be or others will know of your infatuation. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) No one can deny that you’re popular and easy to be around ,and it seems your fan base is growing, but be careful when you’re doling out advice to others, as they may take your advice too literally and could end up in a pickle. Love and passion comes at you in waves at the weekend. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) This is the week to put new career plans into action. You’ve talked and planned, and talked some more. Now its time to take the bull by the horns and go for it. Just stop and think before taking on any major financial commitments. Why have more than you need. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Once you make up your mind to get something done, there’s no stopping you, and your expectation is that others will either join in and help you, or will simply move aside. Think long and hard before coming to any definite decisions about money. Compromise. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) The lunar high offers you new incentives and the chance to put yourself in the path of lady luck. Don’t allow yourself to be held back by petty details. Get out there and let everyone know you’re here to stay. Be careful who you confide in at the weekend.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Let the rest of the world pass you by as you decide to take a little break from all the action. You’ve been clearing the decks for action for a while now, so just before everything kicks off, you want to regroup and recharge by taking a back seat. Quite right too. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) You’ll approach life with gusto and determination this week and your focus on the job at hand will be second to none. Commit yourself fully to getting ahead and ignore detractors when they talk of limitations. Communications are both positive and clear. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Love romance and relationships are well highlighted, and it’s in this direction that you’re encouraged to turn your mind. You cant expect to get on with everyone this week, so it’ll be tricky to deal with anyone who thinks they know better than you how to live your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) The way you deal with others in the workplace is important, and a fine degree of balance is called for, especially if you’re in a position of authority. Look at the broader aspects of life and keep your options open over everything. Not just work but love too. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) You can be very animated and energetic when it comes to showing others you’re the right person for the job, but going over the score just looks desperate, so try to find a balance that shows you in a good light. Home and family matters are improving. Stay focused. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) A week to focus on property and possessions. New plans out into practice now mean greater gains further down the road. Your vitality and charm makes you popular with all and sundry, but being made to stay in the same place all the time wont appeal to you. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Planning every detail is all important when it comes to a project that’s close to your heart. You’re about to prove to others you’ve got talent, but your self confidence is lacking. Think about what you’re going to say before you open your mouth. That’s a good start.

CRYPTIC CROSS WORD

DOG OF THE WEEK

Avatar

Beggars Belief! This is Avatar. A very friendly little dog that’s just learning to be a pup again. `A pup again` you say? Yes, a pup again. You see Avatar is not all that he looks. Yes, he is a pup, but he is not spotty. He was brought in to the Benidorm Dog Home as he was rescued from street beggars who kept him on a short lead and didn’t let him move and because he wasn’t cute enough and getting them money, decided to paint the spots on him. Yes. Those aren’t his real spots but black paint that you use on your house or car, which has marked Avatar badly. It will take time for the painted spots to go away completely and leave him `spotlessly` clean, but that hasn’t restricted his loveable self. In the park at the dog pound he was let off the lead to run free, but he didn’t. He didn’t know how to. We threw a ball for him to chase and fetch, and he didn’t know how to. With patience, and understanding for this little guy, and a great deal of showing him how to play with the ball, he turned around and started to run after the ball and catch it. Finally he now runs after the ball and catches it, brings it back but won’t let it go. Another lesson to be taught to him, but for now he loves the ball throwing game. He runs after the thrown ball like the character Forrest Gump, all legs going everywhere, and trots back to you with paws that look to big for his little legs and ears that are bolt upright and a look in his eyes of excited triumph. Yes, this little guy is a pup again, needing comfort, protection and love. He`s got a rare second chance of life again to be a pup and grow up being loved.

U3A MARINA BAIXI GAMES EVENING

The third annual silly games evening of the U3A Marina Baixa was held on Tuesday evening 22nd July at 6.00pm in the Parc Municipal, Raco de L´Albir. This social event was the inspiration of the Travel & Social Events Secretary Rob Parker with the additional help of his wife Liz after the

Olympic Games in 2012. On a wonderful evening, after a very hot day 52 members of the U3A arrived with their picnic tables, chairs and sun parasols to participate in whatever Rob had deemed suitable for a group of competitors who aged from 7 years (visiting grandchildren) to 80 years. The group were divided into 4 teams who proved to be very competitive. The co-ordination of the members was a joy to see as competitors discovered they had a skill with certain games they were previously unaware. Bill Flint managed to aim all 3 of his bean bags into the net – others missed completely. The catching a potato on a fork proved we still do have good reflexes. The knack of throw-

ing the bean bags into buckets was more difficult than it appeared – people reminiscing when they would throw balls in the fairground and win a goldfish! The teams competing for the over the head through the legs ball down a team of 12 needed Rob to call on additional adjudicators as members forgot whether the ball went over the head or between their legs – no cheating allowed, if it was in the wrong order they started again. Team B were very successful until the leader of the team Peter Rogers happily stood at the end of the line holding the ball – not realising he was supposed to run back to the front – team B came third, the overall winning team¨ D¨ ! One competitor discovered an easier way to knock down the sand filled beer and pop cans when their bean bag hit the table leg and all the cans fell from the shaking table. Passers by walking down the road stood in amusement at this crazy group of people obviously having such fun. . The Dining Out Group met on Friday 25thJuly at the Moli Xirles, a wonderful summer evening dining outside by the water with an additional celebration of Liz Parker celebrating her birthday. General Meetings of the U3A Marina Baixa are held at the Social Centre Albir at 10.30am for 11.00am start. There is no meeting in August. The next General Meeting will be 22nd.September. To check the groups still meeting during August visit the website:www.u3amarinabaixa.com Facebook Page:- U3A Marina Baixa. Health & Family Heavy Drinker? Return to Normal Drinking

No one likes a drunk. At best, the person may become a little drunk at a party, and we excuse it. At worst, the person may be regularly drunk, embarrass themselves and everyone within hearing distance. Everyone knows that their drinking is out of control except the drinker. This type of drinking is not carried out for pleasure; it is compulsive drinking, or drinking with a purpose. The good news is that it is not necessary for people to give up alcohol completely. It is possible for them to return to normal drinking like the rest of us. Reducing the alcohol intake is not easy. If consumption has reached a point of physical addiction, a return to normality must be carried out carefully. If the body has adapted to the large amounts, it must readapt to lower levels. This can be carried out rapidly but is not nice and may require medical supervision, or reduction can be carried out gently. The aim is for the person to return to normal drinking which is moderate social drinking and moderate drinking with meals. Partners of heavy drinkers usually want zero intake but this is

often not realistic or even necessary. There are many reasons why people want to reduce their alcohol consumption. The main ones are: to improve their health, increase their lifespan, improve their quality of life, keep their job, keep their partner, save money, and be safe again. There is a program to return to normal drinking. It does not require turning to God, becoming a Buddhist, being locked up in a clinic, or drinking two gallons of fizzy gunk every day. What it requires is a decision to return to normal drinking and a willingness to work through a program to make it happen..

The stages are as follows: 1 Decide on what alcohol consumption is acceptable. This may be times of day, amount per day, occasions when it is acceptable. This must be decided by the person, not by the partner, doctor or therapist. 2 Identify the reasons for drinking to excess. Common reasons given include: escape from life, boredom, helps with communication when shy, helps with communication if oppressed by someone, celebration or reward, social, with meal, to help relax, to help sleep or generally a bad habit. 3

Deal with each of the causes of drinking so that there are new and better ways of coping with the problems.

4

Monitor the drinking by recognising the reason for having each drink. 5 Drinking reduces naturally and establishes a habit of drinking less.

6

Remove the thought that drinking helps deal with problems.

There is no magic to the program; it simply recognises that some people use alcohol as a coping mechanism and they need a better one. They can then drink socially or at meal times without a driving need or craving to keep on drinking. The author, Grahame Milton-Jones is a Psychotherapist working at the Family Medical Centre, Albir and can be reached on 966 865 072.

Sporting Life UNITED CLAIM CHAMPIONS CUP

Wayne Rooney was among the scorers as Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-1 in the International Champions Cup in Miami. United came from a goal down thanks to second-half goals from captain Rooney, Juan Mata and youngster Jesse Lingard securing the trophy for new boss Louis van Gaal. Liverpool took the lead in the 14th minute when United defender Phil Jones upended Raheem Sterling in the box and skipper Steven Gerrard scored from the spot. David de Gea made a fine save to deny Philippe Coutinho, and Sterling felt he should have had a second penalty when he was brought down by Ander Herrera. Rickie Lambert made a hash of a chance to add to their lead before half-time, and United proved to be in a much more ruthless mood after the break. It took them until the 55th minute to

level the scores, with Rooney side-footing home a cushioned volley at the back post from a Javier Hernandez cross. Two minutes later, United were in front with Mata striking a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection off Mamadou Sakho and flew past Simon Mignolet. United thought they had a third goal soon after, Rooney again on target from close range, but video replays inside the stadium showed Ashley Young's looping effort had hit the back stanchion of the net, not the crossbar, and rebounded to Rooney. Referee Mark Geiger consulted with his assistant and the goal was ruled out. But they did go 31 up in the closing stages, Lingard sealing victory with his strike from 18 yards ensuring United remain unbeaten in pre-season under their new manager.

GOOD WEEK Phil Taylor Hungry For More

World Matchplay champion Phil Taylor is not resting on his laurels and is targeting another tilt at the world crown. Taylor notched his seventh successive World Matchplay title and 15th overall with a 18-9 demolition of World No 1 Michael van Gerwen in Blackpool on Sunday. Taylor admitted afterwards that the last few months had been “an absolute nightmare” after struggling to find form. The World No 2 is now targeting another win at the World Championships, which he last lifted in 2013. “I mean the one thing I’m after is the World Championship – not because people write me off, but to prove to myself that I can do it once more and keep going and keep proving to myself that you’re a winner.

Woods a doubt for Ryder Cup

Monday 18th August 2014 20:00 Burnley vs Chelsea

It is more than likely that Tiger Woods will miss out on this years Ryder Cup, Woods may have returned from back surgery too early, following his operation on March 31. He made his comeback barely three months later and is yet to show any significant form – his most recent PGA Tour top-10 came almost 12 months ago. Woods was forced to withdraw from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club event during Sunday's final round with a back problem. The 38-year-old, who has won this tournament eight times, hit a number of poor shots in the fourth round and, after missing the fairway with his tee shot on the ninth hole he grimaced and reached towards his back before being driven off the course in a golf

Glasgow 2014 has been hailed as "the standout Games in the history of the movement" by Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper. After 11 days of action across 17 sports, the event came to a

close at Hampden Park on Sunday evening, with hosts Scotland finishing fourth overall with a record haul of 19 golds and a bestever tally of 53 medals. England topped the medal table for the first time in 28 years, Wales surpassed their target of 27 and Northern Ireland reaped their largest tally since the Games was last in Scotland in 1986. The Isle of Man had a silver to celebrate thanks to cyclist Peter Kennaugh's efforts in the points race, but Jersey and Guernsey failed to register. It is the third time in their 84-year existence that the Games have been staged in Scotland - after Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986 - and chief executive Hooper maintains they have been the best. "In my view, they are the standout Games in the history of the movement," said the New Zealander of the 20th edition. "The way in which the people of Scotland and Glasgow have embraced the Games right from the get-go has been incredible." After an underwhelming staging in Delhi four years ago, and the withdrawals of a succession of big names in the buildup to Glasgow, there had been concerns over whether such success would be forthcoming. But all the events have been well attended and, for the most part, the weather has also been favourable, as a new generation of athletes have taken their chance to impact on the public consciousness.

GLASGOW 2014 BEST IN 84 BEST IN 84 YEARS

After being accused of paying a bribe to a former banker, F1 chief Ecclestone has been on trial in Germany since April. However, state prosecutors in Munich have agreed to end the trial after the 83-year-old Ecclestone offered to pay a settlement worth 100 million dollars. The deal is believed to be the biggest of its kind in German legal history. The state prosecutor told the court on Tuesday that Ecclestone's age supported the acceptance of a settlement. Craig Slater reporter for Sky Sports F1 said: "The case had been going well for him and it's important to emphasise that this would not be happening unless the judge thought that the case was pretty weak against Bernie Ecclestone.“Had there been any great gravity of guilt then this potential outcome would not be possible.” Had he been found guilty, Ecclestone faced up to ten years in jail and would have had to surrender control of F1 after effectively running the sport since the 1970s.

LAMPARD TO PLAY FOR NEW YORK & MAN CITY

Frank Lampard will join Manchester City on loan until January, Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed. The England midfielder signed for City’s sister club New York City FC this summer, ending 13 trophy-laden years at Chelsea. With the 2015 Major League Soccer season not starting until the spring, there was speculation that Lampard would head to Melbourne City, the third club owned by the City Football Group, on a short-term deal. But after the Premier League champions’ friendly against Olympiakos in Minneapolis on Saturday Pellegrini confirmed the 36-year-old will now move to the Etihad before the next American season begins in March. “As you know, Frank has signed a contract with New York City and hewill start working here [the United States] in January as the season starts in March,” Pellegrini announced after the match. “From next Wednesday he will start working with our team and will play for us until then. At the moment he will work with the squad and be a member of the squad. He will fight for a position.

Man City will pay all wages Manchester City will pay all of Frank Lampard's wages during his loan spell with the club, amid suggestions they are using the deal to bypass Uefa's Financial Fair Play regulations. “Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger questioned whether the move was designed to "get round" FFP rules - which Manchester City failed to meet last season. "Is it a way to get around the fair play? I don't know," said Wenger."It looks like all of these 'City' clubs will feed the main club Manchester City - I heard they want to buy five clubs all over the world. "I don't know the rules well enough, but they bought a franchise for £59.4m to play in the States next season." Lampard left Chelsea in the summer after his contract expired and it is understood City will pay his entire salary while he is with them and New York City will take responsibility thereafter. The midfielder will become one of the minimum five homegrown players City need in their 21-man Champions League squad to comply with FFP.
