Benidorm Pride is a free party week reminiscent of the good old days when people made their own fun in their own way. Dear Readers... September is my favourite month of the year, simply because it's a great month for me with loads of things going on in the Costa Blanca and generally cooler weather that we can appreciate after such a hot month in August. September starts off with the Benidorm Pride now in the fourth year and it seems to be growing both in the number of visitors coming to the area to participate and also the size of the event. Many local businesses support the event and will also be looking forward to seeing the hundreds of visitors, many of those who return each year. The streets of Old Town of Benidorm become dressed in multi colours and flamboyant decoration designs. Known as the "The Gay village" the Old Town in Benidorm is filled with gay friendly bars & restaurants, the maze of little side streets are vibrant and full of atmosphere that appeals to gay and straight visitors for a great night out. Gay Pride is for everyone to enjoy, young and old, single or couples

and you dont have to be gay to be there and enjoy the many events. Read our full Guide to the Pride on pages 12 and 13. With the children going back to school and many business owners who resume normal working hours we can be happy to getting back the normality of living here in Spain. I have noticed already the parking spaces are back and the streets became easier to navigate without having to walk in the road because the pavements were so full. I have also seen the outside terraces of many bars full up due to the start of the football season. Most Brits are loving the fact that the season is back and there is nothing better than a comfortable seat outside in the sun with an ice cold beer complemented by great football match. The biggest news for September for me is all about this newspaper, "The Weekly Buzz" has become bigger and better now with 40 pages offering the only weekly read dedicated to your local area. On a personal note I can honestly say that since the launch of the Buzz last year we have gone from strength to strength. Many more advertisers have seen the benefit of having a weekly read that has great local news and reviews. More and more VISTA CARD offers with new busi-

ness owners joining the scheme each week. Our readers have told us how much they love reading the Buzz it has exactly what they want. And now 40 pages includes "The Property Plus" a dedicated guide to local property - Rentals - Re Sales - New property builds and Business Property. Phil recorded the music video in Weston-Super-Mare with friends and volunteers earlier in the month and has spent the last week editing and ensuring the single was ready for release on Monday. Phil said: “It was great. Everyone who was involved did it for free, and it was fantastic when a couple of my friends surprised me by being there. We all stayed at a friend’s house, and there were something like eight of us in his house, sleeping on the floor and on the couches. WILL BENIDORM BE THE NEW ‘ORLANDO’? The owner of the entertainment group which runs Mundomar, Aqualandia & Terra Mitica has announced the plans to expand around the parks. The long term plan is to become the future ‘Universal Orlando’ resort of Europe by constructing Hotels and facilities closer to the parks. With the success of the most famous resort in the world, it is no wonder why the entertainment group here in Spain want to use the same ideas as an influence for their future. The construction of Hotels and facilities will help combine and bring the theme parks together helping to meet the demands of visitors and would help to attract tourists from all over the world to allowing visitors to stay overnight within the same complex. Aqualandia already boasts that it has over 10,000 visitors per day during August and even over one weekend that figure rising to 12,000, the plan is to build at least three hotels allowing people to make the most of their visit allowing them to spend more time within the resort while also relieving spaces in Hotels in the town of Benidorm. This may not sound great at first for Benidorm’s hotels however there are signs of an increase of British visitors during

August and with the ability to accommodate more people within the area it can only improve help the many bars throughout the town who rely on British trade and struggle immensely through August when they are overpowered by the Spanish visitors. Currently they are still waiting on the permission to start construction but company representatives have said that the detailed plan is set over 20 years but building the hotels and getting them operational is the first and main priority, knowing that they have a plan into the next 20 years we may be looking at the new ‘Orlando’ but in some years to come.

NEWS 7 BENIDORM IS DESTINATION NUMERO UNO

SHOOT & PURSUIT National Police have arrested two men for car theft, attempted murder and dangerous driving, the trouble started when the car failed to stop for a police check point in Benidorm, the two men were in a stolen red BMW and when the car didn’t stop police fired two shots at the car but the men didn’t stop and headed straight toward a group of police officers which they narrowly missed. They lost sight of the vehicle but continued to search for the motor which was heading in the direction of Alicante. It seems that the pair took a chance to fill up

the car so they could continue their escape but was the wrong move as police swooped in on the pair outside a gas station near the Decathlon superstore near Alicante. However the action didn’t stop there as more shots were fired until one of the criminals was shot in the leg, the men of Moroccan origin were described by police as ‘very dangerous’ and disclosed that they had a previous record for violent robbery, drug trafficking, vehicle theft and also kidnaping.

The Mediterranean tourist capital has increased in a 164% the tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom in August bridge according to a study published in this newspaper Benidorm continues to gain popularity among the British tourists according to the study prepared by travelsupermarket, which includes in its pages the British newspaper Daily Mail, in which is told that the British tourist arrivals in August bridge has increased by 164 % compared to 2013. According to this study, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey remain the main destinations chosen by the British in the sum-

mer season. In the country, Valencia and Barcelona also are among the 20 favorite for the English market for these dates, with increases of 83% and 62%, respectively, according to data travel departing between 20 and August 23. However, the report reflects declines in arrivals from the UK to the Costa Blanca with 44% decrease, Costa Dorada (55%), and the Costa Brava (32%) compared to the volume of tourists recorded last year. The data also suggest that due to the economic recovery in the UK the British are taking some additional summer holidays. In fact, the "love of the classic destinations" as Benidorm, Canaries, Balearics and the Algarve is reinforced in this festive period, according to the study. The town of Benidorm has become the fourth Spanish city with the highest number of overnight stays in July with 87.76% (1,199,037), some data only surpassed by the cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Calvia. The Costa Blanca is in eighth place in terms of national hotel occupancy during the month of July with an occupation of almost 80% (79.60%), and second place as peninsular destination.

MONROES PIE NIGHT IS BACk PLUS MUCH MORE! IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE fAMOUS CARVERY Monroes in Benidorm is famous for being the only British Carvery Restaurant, well its not only their famous Carvery that is a favourite. Now they are boasting to be Number 1 for their home baked Pies. With summer soon to be another memory of 2014 we really can start to look forward to the Autumn months as well as counting the weeks ahead before Christmas. The traditional food that us Brits mostly enjoy not only includes a good old fashion Roast Dinner but also all of the other family favourites. Monroes Carvery from September have given their followers a great traditional menu that includes Pie night every Monday. Home made pies served with Chips or Mash together with vegetables from the Carvery. A perfect start to the week Pie Night will be one of my favourites for eating out. >At Monroes the carvery section is laid out with a hot counter offering a full choice of vegetables, mash potatoes and roast potatoes complemented with a pot of thick gravy. Or if you prefer your Pie with chips peas and gravy. The huge pies on display were fresh baked and served onto the hot counter. The pies are are baked fresh with a choice of fillings. Each round pie and stands tall and has a think filling between the crusty pastry.

My choice was "Steak and Ale" also on offer was Chicken, Ham and Leek which also looked very tempting. A generous portion that looked amazing on my plate, I then helped myself to the vegetables, mash and gravy. The filling was juicy and the steak was tender and soft with pleanty of flavour. There were no fatty bits and I really enjoyed the perfectly cooked short crust pastry, my meal was absolutely fabulous. I did actually eat everything that was on my plate, this wasn't as easy as you might think given how tasty the food was but because you can serve yourself the vegetables and potatoes it’s easy to put a little too much on your plate. My excuse is that the serving spoons are very large…no wonder I couldn't manage a dessert! Pie Night is on every Monday at Monroe’s Restaurant and cost only 6.75€ including a dessert. See the menu for the week includes Carvery Special on Wednesday for only 4.95€ Thursday is Steak Night for only 8.35€ and don't forget Fishy Fridays for home battered Fish n Chips. Saturday is Ribs Night that includes a full rack of slow cooked ribs for only 8.95€ plus all week a choice of a fantastic roast Carvery. TAPAS IN THE OLD TOWN

It is essentially a style of eating rather than a form of cooking. Tapas mean sociability, friends and family. The Spanish, in general, won’t drink without eating something as well. Happy hour in Spain is not a half price drink hour. It’s a time when you can have a free small tapa with every drink ordered. Not all bars participate in this modern custom but it is certainly becoming more popular. Many cuisines offer foods meant to awaken the appetite. Antipasti, hors d’oeuvres and mezes are among countless names of dishes typically eaten just before a meal. In some trendy restaurants they turn an assortment of small dishes into the main

meal itself. In Spain, however, eating tapas is a separate dining experience. In fact, the term tapas and its various regional equivalents have come to imply the act of going out bar hopping, or the art of eating while standing. After completing the first round of lively conversation and small plates, the group moves on to the next bar, often only footsteps away. There is no end to the variety of tapas available. Every village, town or city has their own variety of small bites of Spanish flavours. Some of these tapas are common to all districts. Even if the name is slightly different, the recipe will be the same.

MOORS AND CHRISTIAN fESTIVAL IN ALTEA Moors and Christian (Moros y Cristianos) Festivals are held in many towns and cities throughout Spain but most predominantly in the southern Valencian Community. The festivals commemorate the battles which took place for the control of Spain during the period known as Reconquista (from the 8th to the 15th century). One of these festivals on the Costa Blanca is that held at the end of September in Altea. This picturesque town is an easy drive north of

Benidorm, around 10 minutes along the N332. You can park in the new part of town and walk up to the winding, white-washed streets of the old picturesque village. The festival starts on Saturday 27th September although some celebrations get started a week before hand, and the festival runs through until Tuesday 30th September. Sunday is the main day of celebration but there are activities going on throughout the weekend. The 23rd and the 24th are local bank holidays. The ‘opposing forces’ of “Christians” and “Moors” (Moslems) parade through the streets dressed in impressive costumes, painstakingly created for the occasion. The costumes of the “Christians” comprise fur, leather and armour while the “Moors” wear Arabicstyle clothes with swirling scimitars and axes. All accompanied by marching bands playing rousing music reminiscent of the period. (Play the video for an example). Mock battles then ensue and everyone has a great time although the ending is of course the same each year! As you might expect, just like any Spanish Fiesta worthy of the name, there is food, wine and of course fireworks. We will be bringing yhou more information and the event schedule later in the month. If you can’t wait then please do not hesitate to conact us or visit comunitatvalenciana.com for last years schedule

BENIDORM DOG HOMING

What is Benidorm Dog Homing?

Benidorm dog pound is just outside this popular holiday resort. A very short taxi ride from the main hotels and we are always in need of volunteers to walk the dogs in our care. SPAP Benidorm is the agency that runs the pound to look after animals that are sent to it for protection. They have a policy to protect and not destroy animals. However the shelter provides extremely basic facilities, food is donated from hotels, medical Sonja Born Jan 2014, who came to us in August 2014. Young & fresh enough to find a home but much longer in the pound and she will lose that homing chance & will be left with just 1 walk a week. We would love to teach her how to play and have fun but we have no grass available for her to feel and no toys to throw. Shares her pen happily with other young dogs.

care is limited and it is difficult to fully look after up to 300 or more animals.Benidorm Dog Homing are the volunteers who walk the dogs and give vital support. They are the people who take the active part in re-homing and re-introducing dogs back into homes. Amparo Born 2013 and has been in the pound for 4 months now. Bought in totally neglected with matted and dirty fur and at first was very unhappy around people. After a good groom and wash up she has transformed in to a fun loving young dog with energy to play with her cage mates. Take her for a walk and youthful exuberance is in her every stride.

Joshy Born 2011 and been with us over 2 years. Unfortunately in Spain the black dogs are the most neglected and dumped. Hard to rehome due to tradition and them being hard to get a really good picture of. Far too long a stay in a pound and yet still a happy dog who is good with other dogs and now deserves his loving home.

at her. This legend possibly originated in pagan traditions of old times. From there we will have to cross the road to reach La Font Santa. This fountain owes its miraculous origin to the hand of Saint Vicente Ferrer, who brought forth drinking water for the first time to relieve the thirst of his sister Constanza. Be there drought or heavy rain, water always flows. This peculiarity has made it a point of pilgrimage. An hermitage dated on the 19th century is attached to the fountain as well as the the hermit’s dwelling, of the same period, where until recently a family lived.

La Font de L’Horta y Benimarco Starting from Avenida de Mediterráneo, via the camino de San Miguel, we will pass the Creueta de l’ Ave Maria ( a cast iron cross with an inscription in ceramic). The cross indicates the spot where , according to tradition, St Vicente Ferrer halted and blessed the area to prevent the plague and the wrath of pirates from overcoming the population . Taking the lane to the right, we will come to the Font de L’Horta with its two water outlets and a small watering place. This fountain is much enjoyed because of its tranquillity and natural beauty. From there we continue on the Cami del Boticari, starting behind this font. On arriving at the Cami del Pouet del Moro, we turn to the right passing in front of the well which dates back to the middle ages, until we reach the road to Benimarco, which is a typical rural hamlet shared by both Teulada and Benisa. Along this walk we will see many work sheds, typical of this region. We finish up our tour in the square where the hermitage of Sant Jaume lies. The architectural characteristics of the building, with a single nave, are comparable to those of the so-called “conquest” churches. In the square, there is a nice balcony with a great view from the sea. Font Santa Font Santa Hermitage, on the main road to Moraira, after only a few metres we can turn to the right to the Cami de les Rotgetes, that joins on Camí de la Sisca. This peaceful route will take us eventually back to the main road, but just before crossing the road a small fountain with its old watering place will be showed, its “la Font de la Jana” .Here, according to folklore, on the night of 23rd of June appeared a mysterious fairy, “ La Joanaina “, who granted wishes in exchange for carrying her on our shoulders, the only condition being not to turn to look

CHEAP COSTA BLANCA PROPERTIES AS PRICES HIT ROCk BOTTOM. Although hundreds of Spanish families are still being evicted every day for defaulting on their mortgages, foreign buyers have returned in force to the country's depressed property market. According to Knight Frank's Global Property Search, online searches for properties in Spain increased by 29% over the first six months of 2014 compared with the same period in 2013. More than a fifth of all Spanish residential sales – 55,187 transactions – were

to foreign buyers. Foreigners are the only dynamic segment of the market, people buying on the coast it is not just private buyers, institutional investors are also in the market. "The likes of Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Blackstone, George Soros and Bill Gates are all getting into Spanish real estate." Some institutional investors are buying in bulk from Sareb, the so-called "bad bank" that has acquired thousands of unsold properties from failed Spanish banks and building societies. The bank controls about 200,000 property assets – homes and developments – and it is selling houses at a rate of 60 a day. Sareb is now implementing a new strategy for marketing and selling the €50bn in real estate under its control, which could create yet further opportunities for international investors. A surge in sales of both residential and commercial property began at the end of last summer, especially along the coast f the Costa Blanca. A report by Spain's society of prop-

erty registrars says Britons are still buying more property than buyers from any other country; they account for 15% of all sales to overseas investors, but that is down from 34% in 2007. French (10%), Russians (9%) and Belgians (7%) are next biggest. For would-be British buyers, there are two key factors that are enticing renewed interest. The first is a belief that the worst of the eurozone crisis has now passed and that house prices, which have plunged 50% in some areas, are not going to fall much further. People who want to make a lifestyle choice with a second home see that, if prices haven't bottomed out after seven consecutive years of falling, they are close to it. The second factor is exchange rates. The euro-pound rate, which last July stood at €1.05 but is currently €1.26, this is key to the surge in the buying boom! For other, non-EU, nationalities, the Spanish government's so-called "golden visa" is also likely to spur demand. As yet there are no figures showing the impact of the visa deal, which offers legal residency to non-EU citi-

zens who purchase a property valued at €500,000 or more. But estate agent Savills says a similar scheme in Portugal has succeeded in attracting Chinese buyers. It is at the very top end of the market, where the wealthiest overseas investors hunt for a place in the sun, that business is most brisk. The upmarket estate agent Engel & Völkers Spain said in a recent report that the firm's had sold more properties at the top end than in any other year of our 12 years of operations.

DESPERATE TIMES CALL fOR DESPERATE MEASURES Spanish property market in "despair" is almost too weak a word. For the past five years have heaped on misery after misery, the credit crunch unmasked catastrophic levels of overbuilding, and then the ongoing euro crisis has kept the Spanish economy under the thumb. Now the Spanish government is working to revitalise investor confidence, and attract the Brits back to its costas in search of bargains. Banks and estate agents are slashing prices, to help them offload the glut of unsold properties. During the height of Spain’s real estate boom British buyers flocked to the country’s coast. They bought holiday and retirement homes, and fulfilled long-held dreams of a place in the sun. This constant demand inspired builders and developers to keep putting up more houses. A decade-long frenzy saw Spain’s construction industry fuel the nation’s economic boom, before its spectacular collapse when the bubble burst in 2007-08. But now, with an estimated one million unsold new homes alone amid a weak domestic market, Spain’s authorities are keener than ever to promote it as the place to buy. A glance at any property website offering homes in Spain reveals the great bargains to be had. When the bottom fell out of the property market, many developers went bust, and banks were saddled with over-valued properties. Last year, Sareb, the “bad bank” established as a condition for the EU bailout of Spain’s troubled banks, acquired at a discount soured real estate worth €90 billion from troubled lenders. But it’s not only Sareb that is seeking to sell property at vast discounts. Banking groups have been forced to write down losses. This has led to a slash in prices, as they attempt to claw back funds. Chris Mercer, the director of Murcia-based estate agents Mercers, explains:

“Spain is still struggling in contrast with other countries, giving foreign buyers a competitive edge. Other nationalities are comparatively affluent and are finding it hard to resist bargain Spanish property.” Most British buyers of overseas property borrow against their UK home if they need to raise money, and then spend the cash abroad. But it is still possible to get a local mortgage in Spain and some banks are offering attractive deals with the sales. Conti Mortgages Overseas, a Sussex-based broker specialising in mortgages for Britons buying in the eurozone, said it is worth considering a local mortgage especially if it is to be let to generate a euro income. “There has never been a better time to buy in Spain than now,” says Mark Stucklin, founder of Spanish Property Insight, which offers independent analysis of the property market in Spain. “Unlike during the boom times when there was a buying frenzy, there are now fewer cowboys operating in Spain. The malpractice and corruption that was rife just doesn’t exist now. People are also much better informed, so the chances of getting ripped off are much lower,” he insisted. But above all, with the bargains to be had, it’s a buyers’ market. “A buyer today is in a much better position than those who bought in the boom. “Prices have dropped 50 per cent in some areas, those thinking about buying should do so in the next two to three years,” advises Stucklin. He sums up the attraction. “The things that made owning a Spanish property so popular with Britons still exist – the climate, the lifestyle and the proximity to the UK. Spain is still a lovely place to live. That’s its biggest selling point.” Olive groves, sunshine, hot tapas, cold wine, Spain’s charms will outlast this economic crisis, and many to come. These prices, on the other hand, may not!

RENTING OUT YOUR PROPERTY As from 1st June 2013, all homes for sale or to let in Spain are required by law to have an energy efficiency certificate. If you are offering your property for rent after this date, you will need to obtain an energy certificate first. Short-term lets If you want to let your property to tourists on a short-term basis, you must ensure that you are doing so in accordance with Spanish law. The regulations on letting tourist apartments (apartamentos turisticos) and holiday homes (viviendas vacacionales) to tourists will vary depending on the region where the property is located. If you are planning on making a return by renting out your property on a short-term basis, it is best to seek independent legal advice and check what the rules are at the local town hall or the tourist department of the regional government before you buy. Be aware that the marketing of private residential property to tourists is strictly regulated in many regions of Spain. Owners who are caught illegally advertising or letting out their properties without complying with local legislation can be liable for significant fines, in some cases reaching as much as €30,000. If you are planning to buy an apartment which is part of a residential block, you should also check whether there are any rules set by the committee of owners that prohibit or restrict short-term letting. You may want to consider hiring a Spanish letting agent to assist with finding tenants, drawing up rental contracts and managing the property on your behalf. In some regions, such as Murcia, it is obligatory to use a specialist tourist apartment management company for short-term rentals to tourists. Long-term lets Owners who let their properties on a long-term basis are free to do so within the terms set out by the national rental law. However, it is worth seeking professional advice to make sure that you are complying with Spanish legislation and that you are using the correct rental contract. In Spain, there are different types of contracts depending on how long the property is due to be let. You can get copies of these contracts from tobacconists. 10 Tips to Buying Property in Spain – Safely Spanish property has dropped in price radically. Since 2007, prices have fallen by around 35%-50% – thus returning property values to around 2004 levels. Whilst this is terrible news for Spanish property sellers, it provides a fantastic opportunity for anyone thinking of buying a holiday home or permanent home in Spain. Indeed, as a property buyer in Spain you now have a wealth of bargain properties to choose from in virtually every property sector. Spanish property has dropped in price radically. terrible news for Spanish property sellers, it provides a fantastic opportunity for anyone thinking of buying a holiday home or permanent home in Spain. Indeed, as a property buyer in Spain you now have a wealth of bargain properties to choose from in virtually every property sector, from luxury villas and town houses through to beachside apartments, commercial properties and fincas in the countryside. Sellers are desperate and you can negotiate hard before buying a property that, even in these hard times, will prove to be a sound long-term investment – as well as a pleasure to live in! However, the urgent question remains: can you buy safely in Spain? After all, many of us are aware of Spain’s notorious reputation for property “˜problems’, which have been widely reported in the international press. “˜Land grab’ has become a phrase powerful enough to put many people off buying property in Spain altogether and stories about foreigners buying into illegal properties, or those with high potential liabilities, abound – with some justification.

agent etc.), speaks your language fluently, a specialist conveyancing lawyer, and fully qualified with high public liability insurance (check this!). Finally, always get all advice and assurances from your lawyer as to your proposed property in writing.

The truth is that you can buy property in Spain safely. However, to do so you have to be very careful and knowledgeable – with the following guidelines critical:

5. Never sign anything whatsoever at any time, for anyone unless the document concerned has been fully and properly translated into your language and has been expressly approved by your lawyer.

1. Dispel the illusion that the overall operation of Spanish land law is the same as for your own country. Be more careful and more cautious than you would be in your country. 2. Appreciate that there are many illegal properties in Spain and many more that have very considerable potential liabilities often connected to a possible state infrastructure project – the costs of which you may have to pay. In fact, an infrastructure project around your property may even lead to you losing a proportion of your land. 3. Understand an outline of Spanish property law before you go “˜on the ground’ looking at properties. Vitally, know the meaning and relevance of Urbanizado, Fully Urbanizado and Rural and be able to recognise, in principle, where a given property would fall within these designations – as its legality and potential liabilities can sometimes be obvious (until proven definitely otherwise). 4. Find a good conveyancing lawyer before you start looking for property. Spend time and effort to find an excellent lawyer and never, ever allow any conveyancing to be done for you by anyone but your lawyer. Furthermore, always make sure that your lawyer has all of the following characteristics, namely that he/she is: completely independent (of the seller, developer and

6. Never fall into the mistake of thinking that your estate agent is your “˜friend’. He may become so in the future but his aim, whilst you are his client, is to earn a sales commission and so his advice is likely to be biased. Given that sales commissions in Spain can vary from 3%-18% (generally they are 5%-10%) the stakes for the agent are very high, with the sales commission from a single sale sometimes equating to the national salary of some Spaniards. 7. Always use a building surveyor to survey your Spanish property before you pay anything at all for it. However, make sure that your building surveyor is independent (of the seller and agent etc.), fully qualified, fully insured and speaks your language fluently. Ensure that your surveyor provides you with a full written report as to the property, its state and any potential breach of planning controls and that he checks to see that any relevant building licences or building guarantees are in place and valid. 8. Location, location, location – it is critical that you choose the right location for your intended Spanish property and never get so obsessed by looking at individual houses (however wonderful) at the expense of checking and analysing your desired location very carefully – and this should be done both during the day and night. Are all the amenities that you need really there and close enough to be convenient in the long term? Is the land in front of you really non-building land or could a new property be built there, thus obscuring your precious view? Take nothing for granted and, if possible, rent in the area and stay there for a few months before you commit to buying a property 9. Always buy with a view to reselling your intended property. At some stage you will do this, so imagine when assessing the property you want to buy what obstacles might exist to other buyers when you come to sell it. For example, are there many stairs up or down to the house entrance? (This will put off elderly people or those with small children) Are there only two rather than three bedrooms (most people want three), is there good, off-road parking (critical for most buyers), and so on? Compromise on the property you want to make sure that what you buy is easily resaleable to the biggest possible section of the marketplace. 10. Never be rushed (nor rush) to buy a property in Spain as there are plenty of bargains on the Spanish property market and it is always better to miss a fantastic bargain than buy into a disaster. To miss a bargain is a shame but buying into a disaster could change your life completely – for the worse. Good luck!

“food and service was excellent!” Reviewed 2 August 2014 We stayed at the Halley apartments for 2 weeks and for the majority of our stay we ate in this bar. The food and portion sizes were excellent and the service was brilliant. All staff were very polite and friendly! I would highly recommend their Chicken curry! It is now closed until the 16th August which I think they should have waited until later in the year but I would highly recommend this place when staying in Benidorm.

“Excellent service, great food, great price” Reviewed 1 August 2014 We stopped here for tea before we left for the airport and it was great! There were four adults and four children aged 5, 3, 2 and 4 months. The owner came straight over with milkshakes for the children. Our order was taken quickly by a really friendly lady and the food arrived quickly too. Very generous portions and it was delicious! Proper home made chunky chips too. We had pudding even though we were stuffed and that was lovely too. Two courses plus drinks for all of us was only €60! As we were leaving, the owner came out with ice pops for the children, so nice.

My husband and myself both had a lovely meal and the service was very quick and friendly and the price was very reasonable, we will be going again before we go home.

The three course daily menu which includes wine, is great and there is alot to choose from. My favourites are Caprese salad, chicken rolls with bacon and pineapple and the fantastic chockolate and banana cake. In the back of the restaurant there was a small playarea our youngest tried out freequently. We look very much forward to eat there on our next vacation in Albir.

The food has always been top notch. The waiter is very friendly and relaxed. Atmosphere is great as its a small establishment. Absolutely excellent cake for dessert! ARE YOUR CHILD’S EYES READY TO GO BACk TO SCHOOL?

During the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision. Yet, one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Once children go to school, good eye-sight is crucial to keep up with their studies. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books. Specsavers Opticas suggest that a child should have their first eye examination at around three years old, as the earlier things are detected, the easier they are to rectify without delaying the child’s development. This September they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back to school routine so they can be prepared if their child does need glasses. The process of taking an eye test for a child is simple. Firstly, the optometrist will ask the parent or guardian about any relevant family history and any problems their child may be experiencing. Then several child-friendly tests will be undertaken, using special charts and other materials to help children indicate what they can see and how clearly.

They will test the vision of each eye and will check whether they work properly together. They will also measure the child’s focusing ability and the health of the child’s eyes before discussing the results with the parents. If a child does need glasses, there are some great ranges which tick all the boxes of fashion and durability. Kids that wear glasses can now be the envy of all their friends with fun frames in bright colours sporting their favourite character or toy. Popular ranges include Disney, Hello Kitty, Gruffalo, Star Wars™, Simpsons and LEGO and Specsavers have their own kids and teen ranges. YOUR CERVICAL SMEAR TEST... WHAT DO THE RESULTS MEAN? Most women wait anxiously to hear the result of their cervical smear test and in most cases will be told that the result is negative/normal and advised when to have the next test performed. This however is not always the case and it is natural for women to worry if they are asked to see their Doctor regarding the result or told that the test needs to be repeated. In the majority of cases there is no need for concern and being armed with a basic understanding of the meaning of smear test results and terminology, unnecessary

stress can be eliminated! If you are asked to have the test repeated, do not panic! The main reason for this is that the Pathologist is unable to ‘read’ your result. There are several reasons for this including: • An insufficient number of cells in the sample • Current or recent infection which means the cells could not be seen clearly enough • Blood in the sample which can make it difficult to see the cells clearly • An inflamed cervix, which also makes it difficult to see the cells If you are asked to return for a repeat smear, you will normally be asked to do so after around 3 months. This allows time for new cells to grow having been removed during your previous test. Depending on the reason for needing a repeat test, you may be asked to use a treatment such as antibiotics, antifungals or in the case of older women, hormone

treatments. There are several ways in which smear test findings are reported depending upon the laboratory used. However, in general, there are three main categories for abnormal results, these are: - Mild cell changes (also referred to as CIN I or mild dyskariosis) - Moderate cell changes (also referred to as CIN II or moderate dyskariosis) - Severe cell changes (also referred to as CIN III or severe dyskariosis) None of these mean that you have cancer!Your Doctor will want you to have further checks and possibly treatment to prevent cervical cancer which when confined to the cervix, is known as ‘carcinoma in situ . You may also hear terms such as reactive changes, ASC, ASC-US. LSIL, HSIL. These are simply different names for noncancerous or pre-cancerous changes. If you are confused or concerned about your smear test result, speak to your family Doctor or Practice Nurse.

Do you suffer with indigestion, acid, or other gastrointestinal problems? It could be Helicobacter Pylori! Helicobacter Pylori (often abbreviated to H. Pylori) is a bacterium that around half the world’s population carry in the stomach. For many the bug causes no problems, however, it can cause inflammation of the stomach lining that can lead to ulcers. H. pylori bacteria can be passed from person to person through direct contact with saliva, vomit or fecal matter. H. pylori can also be s p r e a d through contaminated food or water. The infection is usually acquired during childhood. Stomach ulcers occur when there is an alteration in the balance of acid needed to digest food, and the mucus that protects the stomach from this acid. This can be caused by anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac etc. However, the majority of stomach ulcers, 80% in fact, are due to infection with H. Pylori. A very small number of people will have other causes such as Crohn’s disease, viral infections and stomach cancer, but this is rare. Symptoms include: • An ache or burning pain in your abdomen • Acid heartburn • Nausea • Vomiting • Frequent burping • Bloating • Weight loss If H. Pylori infection is diagnosed, you will be prescribed what is called triple therapy, i.e. a special combination of two antibiotics to clear the infection and another drug to suppress stomach acid. This treatment is effective in around 9 out of 10 cases of H. Pylori. The unfortunate 1 in 10 will have to repeat the treatment with a different group of antibiotics. We are very fortunate these days that the diagnosis of H Pylori is very simple. Not so long ago the only way to confirm the diagnosis was by taking a biopsy from the stomach. Ulcers themselves very rarely require surgery these days except for in cases of perforation or severe bleeding. H. Pylori is also a risk factor for stomach cancer. Many people try to cope with the discomfort by taking antacids on a daily basis which only masks the problem. H Pylori will not resolve without treatment and treatment will bring immense relief!

Having experienced a range of massage therapies in the past such as Swedish, Chinese and Shiatsu I was looking forward to my first experience of massage in Benidorm. WEEKLY HOROSCOPES wE27

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

You start the month with your energy soaring, and with new opportunities and options coming at you from all directions, you can finally believe that you're getting ahead of the game at last. Make intimate relationships a priority at the weekend. Its vital. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) The best way to tackle the lunar low at the start of the week is to take advantage of the chance to relax and recharge your batteries. You'll be able to focus more clearly on the rest of the week. Make your love life a priority, then money matters, then work. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) Try to go with the flow this week, as there's so many things going on in both work and play , and you don't want to focus all your energy on just the one thing. Domestic and family issues have to come first, then everything else can follow. Something big is coming for you. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Issues from the past which seemed to cause problems, now fade and die, allowing you to get on with your life. You're more positive, much happier and looking to the future with hope now. Slow down and take stock. You don't have to do everything all at once you know. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) Have you made enough time for your partner of late? Can you remember the last time you were alone together? Maybe its time to let everything else take second place for a while, and to relight the flames of passion with the one you love. It's vital this week. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Brain Teaser Rearrange the following letters to give the title of a popular song. ECHO IN MUDDY LANE

Scribble Pad…

You're at your best when working and dealing with others, and this week is no exception. Don't take umbrage if others try to cut in and help you. Its just that they care so deeply for you and they think they're helping. Have patience with them. It's lovely to be so loved. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Both travel and communication are well starred this week, so now would be a good time to meet with bosses and ask for a rise, or fir more responsibility. It would also be great to lay your cards on the table over what you want from partners emotionally. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Now that the lunar high is here, you should be starting to have more faith in yourself and your abilities. Take advantage of what life has to offer. Its one of the only things that's still free nowadays. The itch to travel is growing stronger. Maybe a holiday? SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) Use your ingenuity to put a different slant on tasks this week, and superiors will sit up and take notice of you, mainly because you‘ve broken free of convention yet are getting fantastic results. Maybe that's all you need to push yourself forward and into the main frame. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) When it comes to solving problems, you're one of the best. Its just a shame that untangling your own life isn't always as successful. Never mind, you're on the right track. You've come to a point in your life where you'll either need to build bridges or walk away all together. AQUARIUS (January 21st-february 19th) Be aware that you may be being too outspoken, and if others ask you for viable proof for what you're saying, you may have none. This may leave you with egg on your face. Not a good look at work or socially. Think before you speak and you wont get into bother. PISCES (february 20th-March 20th) Problems from the past once again float to the surface. Maybe this time instead of shoving them to the back of your mind again, you take them and face them head on. and finally get rid of them once and for all. Clearing the slate will allow you to move ahead faster.

TOP 5 TATTOO STYLES Before you head to the tattoo shop, spend some time going over popular types of tattoo art styles to ensure you pick a tattoo design that fits your personal preferences and taste. While you may not know which tattoo style you fancy, the more you explore art techniques you're bound to see a bit of pattern in your interests. Treat your body like you would any other form of fine art and be sure you explore all different art stles and interpretations before you make a permanent mark. While tribal and old school tattoos are some of the more popular forms, black and grey portraits tattoos are a timeless choice if you like fine details. Once you've narrowed down your art style, you can begin to find an artist who specializes in that type of tattooing. From there you can explore design ideas to further enhance your body piece and enrich its meaning. 1. fine line black and grey Fine line black and grey tattoos originated in the Chicano communities of East LA during the 1970s. The use of a single-needle created fine lines with smooth and subtle shading in varied shades of black and grey. Once infamous amongst prison mates, today these artsy sketches include roses, memorial and portrait pieces. 2. Biomechanical For the hardcore sci-fi or industrial types, biomechanical tattoos are a tough choice. Paired with ripped apart flesh or robotic parts, these types of tattoos look best when placed on muscled parts of the body. Think of your legs, arms, or even a neck tattoo, and then get inspired by fantastical machinery for a tattoo design. You may choose to draw the design yourself-or shop around for a skilled biomechanical tattoo artist.

3. Asian Loved throughout the world for their colorful and graceful beauty and designs, Asian tattoos include language symbols to full body art depictions of koi fish, cherry blossom tattoos and dragon and tiger tattoos. Geisha women are yet another popular tattoo design if you want to honor the pinups of the Eastern world. 4. Tribal Depicting rich culture and meaning from Native American history, tribal tattoos became a very popular armband piece in the 1990s and lost much of their significance in the process. True tribal tattoos tattooing practices are often considered rites of passage and may involve monks, blessings, and more painful hand-poked tattooing methods. Rich in spiritual meaning, tribal tattoos mark one part of life to the next. 5. Traditional Old School Traditional and old school tattoos are often used interchangeably and their designs include eagle tattoos, pin-up girls, ships and anchors. From memorial pieces to love and glory tattoos, one of the most popular artists that specialized in creating this type of tattoo style is Norman Keith Collins, also known as Sailor Jerry. You can read more about Sailor Jerry and explore the history of old school tattoos here.

GOOD WEEk Taylor Retains Crown

WIGGINS TO DEfEND TOB TITLE Sir Bradley Wiggins will defend his Tour of Britain title next week after being selected to lead Team Sky at the eight-day race. The 34year-old claimed his first overall victory at his home tour last year and will now bid to become the first twotime winner of the event since its relaunch in 2004. He will be joined by two other Englishmen in Team Sky’s line-up, with Ian

Stannard and Ben Swift offering their support alongside Spain's David Lopez, Austria’s Bernhard Eisel and Colombia’s Sebastian Henao. This year’s race takes place from Sunday, September 7, to Sunday, September 14, and Wiggins is the latest marquee name to be confirmed to take part, after Giant-Shimano named eight-time Tour de france stage winner Marcel kittel in their team on Monday.

MURRAY fINDING HIS BEST fORM Andy Murray believes he is rediscovering his best form after reaching the US Open quarter-final with a 7-5 7-5 64 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Scot had been forced to work for wins earlier in the tournament, but made few errors in a dominant display against the frenchman and set up a showdown against Novak Djokovic. Murray had not beaten a top-10 player since his emotional victory over Djokovic a year ago in the Wimbledon final, but feels he is ready to challenge for another grand slam trophy.

"I don't feel like I'm that far away from playing my best tennis,” said the eighth seed. “It's still obviously a long way from trying to win the tournament but it's only nine sets now, three matches, and I'll just try and take it one set at a time. "I'm maybe five, six days away from potentially winning another grand slam. I know there is a lot of work to be done between now and then, but I'm putting everything out there on the courts. It's the last slam of the year. I hope I can play well."

Phil Taylor was again in supreme form as he comfortably retained his Sydney Darts Masters title to complete an Australian double. The Power followed up last week's victory in Perth with a second straight World Series of Darts crown after overpowering kyle Anderson and Stephen Bunting on the final day at the Hordern Pavilion. Taylor posted a three-dart average of 106.76 as he cruised to a 10-4 win over home favourite Anderson in the semi-finals, while Bunting - in his first World Series of Darts appearance - took out world No 6 James Wade by the same margin.Bunting took the opening leg of the decider, but Taylor replied with a 12-dart leg before moving 2-1 up after Bunting missed five darts at a double.

BAD WEEk from Bad to Worse

India crushed England by nine wickets in the fourth Royal London one-day international to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Even a gem of an innings from Moeen Ali (67 in 50 balls) could salvage a total of only 206 all out for England after the hosts were asked to bat first at Edgbaston. Ajinkya Rahane (106) made his first ODI century for India at better than a run-a-ball as he shared in a 183-run first wicket stand with Shikhar Dhawan (97no) before the tourists got home with 117 balls in hand. It was Alastair Cook's fifth successive series defeat as captain, as a nearcapacity crowd, evidently dominated by opposition supporters, raucously lapped up the occasion.

ENGLANDVS NORWAY WEDNESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER 9PM kICk Off England captain Wayne Rooney was in buoyant mood as he linked up with the rest of the squad for the first time since being named captain. The 28-year-old was named as Steven Gerrard's successor last week, which would have topped off a exciting few weeks for the Manchester United forward, after just recently being made captain for his club side. Just 10 outfield players were deemed fit enough to take part in England's first training session since their disappointing World Cup campaign. Jack Colback, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Rose and Gary Cahill suffered injuries over the weekend and were therefore excluded from Monday's session at London Colney.

ROSBERG SAYS SORRY

Nico Rosberg has accepted blame for his collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Belgian Grand Prix, Mercedes revealed In a statement, the championship leaders said that Rosberg has also apolo-

ALONSO: I'M STAYING AT fERRARI WHITMARSH LEAVES

MCLAREN McLaren have confirmed that former Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh has finally left the company.Joining McLaren in 1989, Whitmarsh was at the helm from 2009 until January this year, when former team boss Ron Dennis was reappointed as Group CEO. A settlement has now been finalised, however, with a McLaren spokesman confirming on Tuesday that "McLaren and Martin Whitmarsh have agreed amicably to part company”.After his return, Dennis promised a “thorough and

objective review” of McLaren, who have struggled in recent seasons and are without a victory since Jenson Button’s success at the 2012 Brazilian GP.With Dennis deciding that the Team Principal role no longer applies to F1, McLaren instead appointed Eric Boullier as Racing Director with Jonathan Neale the CEO of McLaren Racing. The team, who currently stand fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, are set to renew their title-winning partnership with engine supplier Honda next season.

Fernando Alonso has ruled out leaving Ferrari despite another year of frustration with the Scuderia and the flattery of McLaren making their interest in re-signing him public. The Spaniard, a two-time title winner with Renault prior to a tumultuous single year at McLaren alongside Lewis Hamilton, is still widely regarded as the best driver in F1 but has cut an increasingly frustrated figure this year with Ferrari unable to keep pace with runaway championship leaders Mercedes after four successive seasons of playing second fiddle to Red Bull. "Our season has been frustrating because we had high hopes with this year’s new regulations and starting from zero with all the other teams we thought we could have an

advantage with all our facilities and input from everybody. But we have found ourselves not in the right position and not competitive," Alonso told Sky Sports News HQ’s Rachel Brookes in an exclusive interview ahead of this weekend’s Italian GP. "We are further away from the leaders than during any other season this year, we are sometimes oneand-a-half seconds away from Mercedes." But after committing the second-half of his F1 career to Ferrari, the 33-year-old Alonso is not for turning. "It's not my intention at the moment to move, I want to win here and finish the job that we started some years ago and we will see what the future comes," he declared.

Lewis Hamilton insists he hasn’t given up on winning this year’s World Championship as he seeks to cut his 29-points deficit to Nico Rosberg with victory in this weekend’s Italian GP. A forlornsounding Hamilton admitted that “maybe it is just not my year” after falling further behind Rosberg in the wake of a hugely controversial - and, from Hamilton's perspective, luckless - Belgian GP two weeks ago when the German punctured his team-mate’s race-leading Mercedes on the second lap. The incident saw relations between the pair - frosty at the best of times this year reach a new nadir with Hamilton claiming Rosberg admitted he deliberately didn't avoid a collision in an internal post-mortem. Rosberg belatedly apologised to Hamilton for his unpunished mistake five days later at a second Mercedes meeting at the team's Brackley headquarters. By poignant irony, the two friendsturned-bitter-title-rivals first met, and raced against each other during boyhood, at Monza, the scene of this weekend’s reunion when all eyes will be fixed on the two Silver Arrows drivers and the next chapter of their compelling championship battle. fALCAO DOMINATES HEADLINES

TORONTO HOPING TO kEEP DEfOE Jermain Defoe came close to returning to England on deadline day, but Toronto FC are hoping to keep him long-term. The England international only agreed a move to the MLS in January, making his bow in March after bringing to an end a successful second spell at Tottenham Hotspur. Despite spending just five months in the United States, it was suggested on Monday that a Premier League homecoming was on the cards prior to the 11pm deadline. QPR manager Harry Redknapp discusses his new signings, and admits he's disappointed not to have resigned Jermain Defoe. Leicester City were heavily linked with the 31year-old frontman, while Queens Park Rangers were leading the chase for long periods. No transfer was pushed through, though, with Harry Redknapp telling Sky Sports: “Jermain wanted to come. We were hoping to get him. We agreed a deal with Toronto but it was difficult for them to release him.” A second

approach in January is already being mooted, with QPR owner Tony Fernandes admitting that Defoe remains in their thoughts.

ARSENAL SIGN DANNY WELBECk

Hull City were the most active Barclays Premier League club on transfer deadline day - but it was Manchester United's loan signing of Radamel Falcao which proved the headline grabber. While Steve Bruce brought Abel Hernandez, Mohamed Diame, Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa to the KC Stadium, United had to work into the small hours to finalise the signing of the Monaco striker on a season-long loan.Despite details of the move emerging early in the day, United had to have an extension past the 11pm deadline to ensure the necessary documents were correctly filed with the Premier League. They eventually announced Falcao's signing, which has an option to make the move permanent, at 1.30am, a deal which took United's summer spending past £150million. By that time, Arsenal had confirmed United striker Danny Welbeck had joined them, for a reported fee of £16million, after Falcao's arrival made his chances of regular first-team football even more remote. And the presence of the

Colombia international at the club's training complex late on Monday also spelled the end for Javier Hernandez, who earlier in the day joined Real Madrid on loan with a view to a permanent move. United will pay Monaco between £5million and £6million for Falcao and will cover his wages, although they insist reports they will pay the 28year-old almost £350,000 a week are wide of the mark. "I am delighted Radamel has joined us on loan this season," said manager Louis van Gaal."He is one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game."His appearance-to-goal ratio speaks for itself and, when a player of this calibre becomes available, it is an opportunity not to be missed." The grand total spent in the summer window comfortably exceeds a new high of £800million and while the majority of that was spent by those chasing Champions League football, Hull made a serious statement of intent in the closing hours

Arsenal have signed England striker Danny Welbeck from Manchester United for a fee believed to be in the region of £15-16million. The deal was sealed in the early hours of Tuesday morning after the Gunners were given a two-hour extension to the transfer deadline to complete all the formalities. Welbeck, 23, had been the subject of interest from a host of Premier League clubs after being told he was no longer wanted under new United boss Louis van Gaal. Tottenham were seriously interested in signing Welbeck on loan, while Newcastle, Sunderland and Hull City also made enquiries, but Arsenal moved for the forward late on

Deadline Day. Sky sources reported earlier on Monday that the player had left training with England in Hertfordshire to undergo talks with the Gunners and he has now signed a longterm contract with the north London club. Welbeck came through the youth ranks at United and rose to prominence on a successful season-long loan at Sunderland during the 2010-11 season. He has scored 20 Premier League goals in 90 appearances and has won 26 caps for England since his 2011 debut, scoring eight. However, his only start this season came in the 4-0 League Cup thrashing at MK Dons last month

BEN ARfA LEAVES IT LATE TO JOIN HULL CITY

LEICESTER SIGN UNITED DUO

Hull City have signed midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa on a season-long loan from Premier League rivals Newcastle. Frenchman Ben Arfa is out of contract at the end of the season and had been completely frozen out of the firstteam picture at St James’ Park. He was placed in the reserves by Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who questioned his professionalism and said there was no way back for him with the club. He recently turned down a move to

Turkish club Besiktas and did not want to drop down to the Sky Bet Championship, where Birmingham City were interested in signing him. Hull emerged as the most serious suitors late on Deadline Day and they were granted an extension to get a deal completed. “Hatem is a superb addition to the squad, and brings a lot of attacking flair,” said Bruce. “We look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Leicester City have signed forwards Tom Lawrence and Nick Powell from Manchester United. The Foxes just beat the transfer deadline to add the duo and Lawrence has signed a four-year deal while his fellow 20-year-old Powell has joined on loan until the end of the season.Lawrence, who was born in Wrexham, made only one appearance for United when starting the final Premier League game of last season – the 3-1 home win over Hull City. He had previously had loan spells with Carlisle and Yeovil last term, making a total of 30 appearances and scoring five goals. After signing for Leicester he told Sky Sports News HQ: “It’s all sorted so I can’t wait to get going now. “I have been at Manchester United for a long time now, and I can’t wait to get some game time.” As for Powell, Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett said just after 1am: "Nick Powell left the training

ground here about half an hour ago, still not knowing if he was a Leicester player for the rest of the season."The deal has now been ratified and Leicester have signed a second Manchester United attacking midfielder."

PAUL MCGINLEY'S RYDER CUP WILDCARD PICkS

Stephen Gallacher, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood are Europe captain Paul McGinley's wildcard picks for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

McGinley had narrowed his selection pool down to five names, with former world No 1 Luke Donald and Italian Francesco Molinari the unlucky players who will miss out on this year’s highly-anticipated showdown at Gleneagles. Gallacher is the only Scot in the team and his selection will no doubt add to what is expected to be a passionate atmosphere at Gleneagles when the tournament starts on September 26, live on Sky Sports. The 39-year-old – nephew of former Europe captain Bernard Gallacher – missed out on an automatic spot in the team by just one stroke following his third place in last weekend’s Italian Open. On his three Ryder Cup selections, McGinley said: “I think we have three players that will add a lot to the nine already qualified and make the European team as strong as it needs to be to take on the might of America.” McGinley admitted Gallacher’s sterling performance in Italy was a telling factor in selecting the Scottish rookie. He added: “I think his performance last week in Italy under the spotlight was huge. He’ll look back at the end of his career - whatever he may go on to achieve - as being one of his highlights. “What he did, how he did it, all credit to him. I spoke last week about dashing for the finish line and

£835m - RECORDS HIT AS TV DEAL kICkS IN The record amount of money spent by the 20 Premier League sides this summer. This comes after the clubs pocketed their first season of vastly increased TV money. Last year was the start of a three-year domestic TV deal with Sky and BT worth £3.018bn, a 70% increase on the old deal. In fact, the previous record of £630m - set last summer - was broken this year on 14 August - before a ball had been kicked. Dan Jones, partner at Deloitte's Sport Business Group, believes the 2014 World Cup in Brazil also helped to swell the figures. He said: "There are a number of factors contributing to this summer's spend, including the showcase for global talent a World Cup provides. "However, one of the main drivers of Premier League spending continues to be the increased resources clubs now have as a result of improved broadcast deals." Football agent Rachel Anderson said: "Is the spending reckless? It depends how you look at it. If you compare the spending to normal people in normal life then, yes, it is reckless. "But if you compare it to blockbuster movies or a singer from a

TV reality show who can't sing very well, then it is worth it. "It is worth it for the entertainment they produce."

£530M - WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING? Almost two thirds of the money spent by Premier League clubs this season has gone to foreign teams, with £305m staying in England. The figure of 63% is considerably lower than last year, however, when 78% of the total spend went abroad. Luis Suarez joined Barcelona from Liverpool for £75m, but English teams were busy buying some of the best that Spanish football has to offer. The top three clubs in Spain all lost a major player to the Premier League over the summer. Angel Di Maria was the most expensive import, with Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez also arriving. "And the emphasis on recruitment from abroad is not reserved to the Premier League and La Liga either. Many of the big signings in Italy, France and Germany have not come from their own leagues, with the likes of Ciro Immobile swapping Serie A for the Bundesliga, Alvaro Morata heading to Italy from Spain and Xabi Alonso arriving in Germany from Real Madrid."
