Info & Announcements

Dear Readers Finally we see a more settled week of weather, there have still been some very warm days but you can certainly feel October has now transformed the summer into autumn. During the day seeing the many beach lovers bathing you would not really agree its autumn but the coolness of the morning air gives it a much fresher feel to the start of the day. The fact last Thursday was a public holiday the roads were much quieter and there seemed to be less people about in general. Often here workers take an extra day off giving them four or five day’s holiday taking into account the weekend. This is known as a "Pointe" it means a bridge to extend the holiday. This is very common and often we find many business owners and employees taking advantage of this common practice. The holidays and fiesta days are somewhat never ending one holiday rolls into the next it seems. For the majority of people that are here on holiday themselves or retired living here would not notice the amount of public holidays but for the purpose of getting things done if you’re in business or using any government services or departments your tasks an become a bit of a headache. Calpe sees the annual event of October Fest something that I have not visited in the past but aim to this year to experience the very popular beer festival. With now only 24 days to the start of the Benidorm Fiestas it is soon time to prepare this year’s fancy dress costumes for the famous Brit day on Thursday 13th November. The Buzz team will be there to take part in the famous event and capture the hundreds of amazing costumes and goings on. But before we even think about this we should first be thinking about what's going on for Halloween and preparing our costumes for a fun night out. Halloween is becoming more and more popular in Spain as it really wasn't celebrated at all a few years ago. There are now many Halloween events for the children and it is common for restaurants and bars to dress up and decorate for a theme night of fun and games. The shops have themed window displays and sell everything possible to decorate and enjoy Halloween at home or to attend a party event. As we move another week closer to Christmas we hope you will enjoy the Weekly Buzz Christmas specials giving you some great gift ideas and help you with the preparations for home, with now only 10 weeks to Christmas Eve I hope you are ready to start a little shopping. Well for me it's time to sit back and relax with some world class sport on the box as it is Sunday I can enjoy the Russian Grand Prix followed by England v Estonia this afternoon for me it’s an ideal way spend my Sunday.... before do a walk with the dog and a full English brekkie at the Yorkshire Pride what more could I ask for on a beautiful October Sunday in the Costa Blanca. Please share with us your favourite shops and places to visit, what is your favourite sports venue and where to watch the premiership football especially on Saturdays. Here in Spain you will find many bars showing all of the games as well as the 3pm kick offs via the wide range of World Sports Channels available. It is great to share your findings with other football fans who want to find their teams match being televised. Email or text me your comments on +34 673 652 340 - buzz@vistacostablanca.com And don't forget to come along to visit us in the indoor market in Benidorm it is a great place to browse the many shops, you can eat and drink with a selection of cafe bars and you can pick up your FREE VISTA CARD to get hundreds of local savings and rewards. BLACKPOOL AIRPORT “A VERY SAD DAY” From Page 1 After suffering losses for a number of months, the airport went on sale at the end of August in a final attempt to secure its future. However, with no prospective buyers, it has been forced to close. The airport remained open until today (Wednesday October 15th), with schedules running as normal. However, all commercial flights will now cease to operate. Passengers have been urged to contact their flight operators for information on replacement journeys after the airport’s closure. ABTA, the UK travel trade association for tour operators and travel agents, regretted the move. “This loss of a local airport will not be welcomed in the north west of England or by the travel industry, at a time when the UK is crying out for investment in airport infrastructure," an ABTA spokesman said. "ABTA consumer surveys have repeatedly found that people prefer to fly from a local option when one is available. “Without a doubt the sky high aviation taxes we pay in the UK will have contributed to the closure of Blackpool Airport which will have an extremely damaging impact on the local economy.”

Blackpool Airport has said it will help workers to find future employment, in order to support the wider economy. “Working in partnership with the local authorities, regeneration plans are also being developed which will be designed to create future employment and sustainable economic development opportunities for Blackpool and the Fylde Coast,” Blackpool Airport said. Owners of the Airport Balfour Beatty have been trying to find a buyer to take over the operating interests in the terminal, which was bought for £14m in 2008. “This is a very sad day for the airport which has a proud aviation history and a loyal, appreciative customer following. We would like to thank all our dedicated staff who have delivered exceptional service to passengers for many years.” They added in a statement: “Unfortunately, there is no option for the company other than to close.

BLACKPOOL SECOND REGIONAL AIRPORT TO CLOSE IN 2014 Blackpool Airport his the second UK regional airport to cease operations this year, Earlier in October, the site of the former Manston Airport in Kent was sold for redevelopment, despite ongoing last ditch efforts to retain it as an operational airport. Blackpool Airport, which handled 220,000 passengers last year, is owned 95% by Balfour Beatty, with Blackpool Borough Council holding the remaining 5% stake. Jet2.com operated its last flights from the airport last Thursday (October 9th), and has since, moved all its Blackpool operations to Manchester Airport. In a statement, released last

week, the airline said: “Although the airport remains open until Oct. 15, the considerable uncertainty in recent weeks over its future has already led to the withdrawal of key third party facilities, without notice, that have seriously impacted the operation of our aircraft from and to Blackpool Airport. Therefore and in the interests of our customers, with effect from Oct. 10 and until further notice, Jet2.com’s services that were scheduled to operate from Blackpool Airport will operate instead from and to Manchester Airport.” Manchester Airport is to get 26 extra flights a week following the announcement of the domestic closure of Blackpool Airport.

SALES AGENTS REQUIRED JOIN THE TEAM CALL: 602 467 595 FOR MORE INFO

Experts warned the closure of the airport - which traces its roots back as far as 1909 - will badly damage the north west economy. A spokesman said: “We are saddened and disappointed to hear that Blackpool Airport will close.” Owners Balfour Beatty said the airport had been making a loss for many years. In recent years, flights from the airport have served five Spanish destinations in Palma, Alicante, Murcia, Tenerife South Málaga.

LAND AHOY!

The MS Amadea, arrived in Benidorm on Monday (13th October) arriving at 7am allowing its 620 passengers the opportunity to visit the town and surrounding areas. The Mayor Agustin Navarro and the director for tourism Gema Amor were at the port early in the morning to greet the first visitors. The passengers slowly disembarked the ship on a smaller “shuttle boat which was going to and from the Benidorm port through the morning and early afternoon. The cruise ship only moored up for 6 hours before it started its journey once again. This was a bit of a shame because many pasengers had booked excursions out around the area in advance, visiting Guadalest,Alicante, Altea and Calpe. Some passengers did stay to take in the wonders of Benidorm but as the ship left at

1pm there wasn’t too much time to explore the whole resort. The town hall still made the most of the occasion ensuring the streets were perfectly clean and well presnted with banners hanging from lamposts. Even though a lot of passengers did not spend time in Benidorm it his hoped that the efforts made will encourage the cruise operators to establish Benidorm as a port to call on again in the future.

GUT SHOT

A man of 59 years has been arrested for attempted murder and illegal possesion of firearms. Francisco Fresneda handed himself into police in Benidorm last week a few hours after shooting another man. The victim, a 35 year old man has been recovering in hospital after a bullet penetrated his abdomen. Guardia Civil were alerted to the incident and the injured man was taken to Villajoyosa hospital, where he had emergency surgery to remove the bullet from his stomach and has since been in a stable condition and on the mend. It has been reported that Fresneda shot the man after he heard his father’s calls for help, the son was shot while running to his assistance. Fresnada has admitted the shooting to police, but according to his lawyer, he only intended to intimidate him. He fired in the air and could not understand how the injury occurred. The victim’s lawyer spoke up against the statement saying “It’s strange for a bullet to go into a person’s stomach when someone fires into the air, It has since been established that after inspecting the crime scene the shot fired had

7

ricochetd off of a metal railing. After the arrest was made the police searched the home of the culprit and seized a pistol in a holster, several mobile phones, a precision scale and 200 grams of hashish. The weapon found was not the one which was used in the shotting, that weapon was later found accompanied by 3 magazines, two boxes of ammunition and 1 kilo of hashish.

BRITISH MAN FOUND DEAD

The body of a British citizen 70 years yesterday was rescued by a helicopter on a cliff in Benidorm. The body was apparently found on some rocks on a cliff located in a small cove area on the coast of Poniente side of Benidorm. Attempts were made to remove the body by boat as it was impossible to do it by land, however to extremely difficult access to the body because of the location, weather and waves from the tide it was finally decided to request a helicopter from the fire department, which took over

the recovery of the body. Sources have confirmed that the deceased was a British citizen, aged 70, whose disappearance was reported by his family a few hours before, after his whereabouts were unknown by anyone at the hotel where he was staying. They were later requested to visit the police station to provide details of the victim. The body was recovered successfully and was taken back to the fire station and later removed by a coroner.

CONCERNS OVER SAMARITANS IN SPAIN USING A 902 NUMBER

Not all 902 numbers are premium rate numbers. Sadly Telefonica have lumped premium rate and premium service into the one 902 range. Whether the number is premium rate or premium service depends on the fourth number. 902 followed by 1,2,3 or 4 are premium rates costing up to four times the standard rate, and from which the receiving company benefits financially. ‫‏‬ 902 numbers followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9 are to provide a premium service, from which the receiver gains no financial benefit, but does benefit from a premium service. For example the charity Samaritans in Spain uses the number 902 88 35 35, hence the fourth digit is 8. This means that the number is not connected to any local telephone exchange. What this allows the Samaritans to do is have several phones in several locations attached to the 902 88 35 35 number. This means that whenever someone calls their num-

ber, whether they are calling from Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella, and the Balearics or wherever, they are connected to a listener. And it doesn’t matter where that listener is physically located. All for the same fee!

All Samaritans in Spain calls to 902 88 numbers are charged at national call rates. From landlines and public phones the connection charge is €0.08 plus €0.04/min: Mon-Fri 20:00-08:00, weekends & public holidays and €0.07/min: Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00. Sadly calls from mobiles are CONSIDERABLY more. Each mobile provider sets their own rates and, sadly, they can, and often do, range from 0.20 cents per minute, to over 0.80 cents per minute, plus a connection charge ranging from 0.12 to 0.20 cents. Unfortunately, Samaritans in Spain have absolutely no control over these charges, nor do they benefit from them. All the profit goes to the mobile provider. Samaritans in Spain recommend that the

caller bears these charges in mind and where possible use a landline or public phone

It is so sad when we read that ALL 902 numbers are premium rate numbers when only some are. Many, like Samaritans in Spain are premium service numbers which actually benefits both the caller and the receiver. Further information and all the details about Samaritans in Spain can be found on their website at www.samaritansinspain.com or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Samari tans-in-Spain/342312575891259 The Samaritan service in Spain is provided by Costa Blanca Samaritans, a notfor-profit organisation registered with the Generalitat Valenciana, with the Registration Number: CV-01-042952-A and NIF: G54341466 Lubbertus

U3A Marina Baixa Visit Morrella & Peniscola NO GOTA FRIA HERE ! On Friday 3 October 55 members of U3A Marina Baixa headed north – not to Alaska but to Peñíscola. The trip had been organised by their Travel and Events Co-ordinator, Rob Parker, ably assisted by his wife Liz, and true to form they had planned an action packed three days. The afternoon of Day 1 was spent in the ancient walled city of Morella in the province of Castellón, famous not only for its magnificent 14th

century castle and medieval walls but for its cheeses, truffles and its sweet flaons and mantecadas. Narrow cobbled streets, tall stone houses and timbered walkways added to the charm of the old town and the panoramic views from the castle made the climb worthwhile. There was a round of applause as the coach driver made his way through one of the city gates with inches to spare! Arrival at the hotel in Peñíscola was followed by dinner and walks along the promenade with the promise of another interesting day on Saturday. After breakfast the group set off to visit the Molí de Rafelet in Deltebre where rice has been hand milled since 1935. They were provided with a very informative talk on the processes involved from planting and harvesting the rice to cleaning and

packing and the different types of rice used for various dishes. Buying a bag of rice in the supermarket will never be the same again! The owner of the mill provided everyone with a bag of rice before they set off for a boat ride on the river Ebro. What a treat it was to see the water flowing in this enormous river after such a long hot and dusty summer. Freshly cooked mussels and ice cold cava were served on board – very welcome on a beautiful sunny day. A slightly weary group returned to the hotel late afternoon with time to enjoy the sunshine before dinner and an evening of dancing on the hotel terrace until midnight. On Sunday, the final day of their trip, they visited the castle of Peñíscola which was erected by the Knights Templar in the 14th century and later modified by Pope Luna. However, the castle is probably more famous for the filming of El Cid! The castle, despite its age, has been well maintained and several of the rooms house exhibitions of art and history. Leaving Peñíscola the coach made its way to the Coves de Sant Josep in La Vall d’Uixó where another boat ride was

So come along, be determined and meet new friends. Terry (Chairman) Tel 965 020 252 taken, but this time on a subterranean river providing magnificent views of an underground world.

Finally the group descended on a Chinese restaurant near the caves for lunch before returning to Benidorm where unbeknown to all there had been a gota fria in their absence. How lucky can U3A Marina Baixa be! General meetings of the U3A Marina Baixa are held at the Social Centre, Albir at 10.30am for 11.00am start on the 4th.Monday of each month. We went along to meet Vincenzo, Davide and the team and to taste their food and experience the ambiance of the open terrace restaurant in the heart of Benidorm's centre. Our order consisted of a mixture of Pizzas, Pastas and Sirloin Steak, It was difficult to choose from such a fantastic menu but I couldn’t have been tempted away from the Pizza and Pasta not even for a juicy sirloin steak but we all had something different to try and the portion sizes were large enough for us all to sample what others had chosen much to my relief. Everything looked so good I was ecstatic to be able to taste the other menu choices, Italian food is my passion I can live on it and some people who know me say that have never met anyone else who loves Pizza and Pasta as much as I do. The team were all taken by the quality and presentation of the dishes and agreed that El Italiano would be their first choice and all would highly recommend the restaurant. Danielle, Vinchenzo, Davide and their team welcome our readers and have given all VISTA CARD holders 10% off the bill as well as some other fantastic special offers.

Orange Grove Camper Park is NOT facing Closure In last week’s edition of The Buzz, we reported that Orange Grove Camper Park in Albir is an illegal campsite facing closure. We would like to apologise for misinforming readers as this is not the case. Spokesperson for the town hall of Alfaz and Albir Toni Such issued the following statement to clarify the matter; “Right now Orange Grove has all the relevant paperwork it can possibly obtain whilst the DIC license is being processed”. The Orange Grove Camper Park had its temporary licence (originally granted for 2 years back in 2012) renewed in May of this year INDEFINITELY while it awaits the lengthy process of obtaining the final DIC (Declaración de Interes Comunitaria) licence. It is quite common for businesses to operate before the final permission is granted and there are no fewer than 30 businesses (including several hotels, a large DIY store and a garden centre) operating in similar circumstances in Alfaz and Albir alone. The original press release that created the confusion came from leader of the opposition

PP party Maite Huerta, who spokesperson Toni Such suggests “appears to have a personal problem with this type of tourism, which incidentally represents an important part of our tourism sector, and her daring to suggest that these businesses are illegal may well lead her to face the courts”. Orange Grove owner Francisco Such told the Buzz, “I am tired of being accused of operating an illegal business. Hundreds of people pass through our doors every month and spend their money in our shops and restaurants. Maite Huerta seems to be trying to score political points at the expense of my business and I am grateful to the Buzz newspaper for setting the record straight”.

NUEVO ALCAZAR LA NUCIA If you like good food then you will absolutely love this place, it’s tranquil, spacious and so inviting. The cuisine offers a wide range of international dishes that has all of the favourites from around Europe. The Buzz team went along to meet Christopher the owner and his team to discover more about the cuisine at Restaurant Nuevo Alcazar. The setting is combined of a large terrace featuring a centre piece water feature, together with an open dining room leading out onto the terrace also the main restaurant that is split over two levels. The decor is attractive colonial style with decorative pillars and leather upholstered furniture. The table setting is stylish and is complemented with a service that is impeccable. Our choice of starters were Carpaccio of Beef Rossini served with goose liver gratin and truffle oil dressing. The other plate was a Trio of Seafood that combined North Sea Shrimps with king prawns and scampi each served individually onto a salad. The choice of starters on the menu were extensive and there was a selection of Cold and Warm options also a selection of homemade soups. As the temperature of the evening was in the high twenties and my summer appetite had arrived, I wanted to enjoy a healthy lighter dish, so the Seafood Trio was a perfect choice. It was fresh and cool and with a tasty tangy dressing, presented well and extremely enjoyable. The Carpaccio of beef Rossini was a mouth-watering combination that melted away in your mouth and in fact the toast served on the side had been forgotten as the meat was so good it really wasn't needed and was only remembered after we had finished. For main course I was tempted by the variety of fish dishes but unfortunately on this occasion the fish on the menu will have to wait until next time. Although I would like to mention that the

menu offers the best choice of fish that you will find anywhere in the Costa Blanca., there was turbot, cod, monkfish and salmon that all play a big part in the menu as well as others. I decided on the Fillet of Steak with a red wine sauce and goose liver pate, the Rack of Lamb was tempting but I love my steaks, I had it cooked medium which came out fabulous and it was served with a cauliflower and complemented with a potato cake. The other main was Fillet of Pork with cognac and cream sauce with onion and pear, with a choice of sautĂŠ potatoes and French fries were served on the side. The portion sizes were generous and we were absolutely delighted with the quality of the food. There is also fresh lobster on the menu with five varieties to choose from, a Children's menu that has been designed with a variety of the younger generations favourites. The chef, Javier Boccalandro and his team combine the French, Belgian, and Mediterranean cuisines into enticing dishes, prepared with only the best fresh ingredients, they are used to serving a full restaurant of nearly 200 covers most evenings with the visitors coming from far around and have been coming back over and over through the years. I had noticed there was a table arrangement in the restaurant which was prepared for a party that seated 20 and after talking with Christophe he explained that they hosted a variety of parties most evenings. They also have their own extensive wine cellar that holds over 100 Spanish and French wines that simply compliment the excellent service and exceptional setting. This magnificent building is located on the CV70 on the roundabout number six coming from Benidorm towards La Nucia. We were mostly impressed with the quality of the cooking together with the presentation of the dishes. A first class recommendation from us at the Buzz Newspaper.

TRAVEL AROUND

Dénia

Dénia is located on the east coast of Spain, along the coastal stretch known as the Costa Blanca. Denia is very much a family resort and one of the most popular tourist destinations on the northern Costa Blanca. A quiet little town that was once the centre of the region's raisin growing industry. Although tourism has taken over, raisins are still grown here and remain to be a local delicacy. The main avenue in Dénia is the Marques de Campo where you can sit and watch the world go by. In the Plaza de Constitucion you will find a wonderful 17th century church. The area around Dénia has been voted the third healthiest place to live by the World Health Organisation.

What to see in Dénia Dénia is an old town with a long history. Right back to Roman times it was an important centre. As such there's no wonder that there are remains of ancient civilizations everywhere. One of the most important monuments in Dénia is the castle. You can read all about Denia Castle and see a video here. The castle also houses a museum. It was built in the 11th century and has been remodelled several times over the years. You can find the castle at the top end of Denia, close to the town hall. Access is via a maze of narrow streets. The main seafront in Dénia is an attractive road with ample parking and facilities to stop and eat and drink. From the seafront, small roads lead into the town. Behind the first line of buildings are a series of small patios where you will find some superb restaurants amid the little fishermens' houses, all painted different colours. There are some quirky restaurants in this area that make a pleasant change from the seafront. The Marina Dénia is not only one of the most important ports along this coast of Spain but it also has a wonderful marina. The marina has been totally refurbished over recent years and now provides a stunning location to walk, sail and enjoy the facilities there. The waterside is surrounded by bars, cafes and restaurants with a sprinkling of shops and offices. To the side of the marina is a small bay beach. Calle Marques de Campos is the main shopping street. Here you will find most of the major banks as well as designer shops such as Mango. Barrios Antiguos (Old quarter) This is where you will find the town hall, churches, museums and lots of narrow streets. Every

street is diffrerent and there are some quaint little shops.

The Town Hall in Dénia is a fine example of a classical building, built around 1620. There is a unique stone inscription on the wall dedicated to a Roman Dénia of the 2nd century, Titus Junius. You can find the town hall at the foot of the castle in the historic part of town. The town hall have several staff that speak English and are very helpful. Take a ticket from the information desk when you arrive then wait for your number to be called. Recent works on the square in front of the town hall have revealed Roman foundations. Beneath the castle is the old Air Raid Tunnel which was built between 1937 and 1938 as a defense during the Spanish Civil War. It was constructed by the residents of Dénia and war refugees. (March 2011 - the area is being refurbished).

Shopping and markets in Dénia Monday is the main market day in Dénia (8am2pm). There is also an antiques market on Fridays (pictured right). Both are located in front of Jaume I Square. The fresh fish market is located in the port and has a daily auction at 5pm. The indoor market in the centre of town is open daily. There's also a morning fruit and veg market outside.

Finding your way around Dénia The backdrop to Dénia is the Montgo mountain with its natural park (Parque Natural del Montgo) where you can take amazing walks. Behind the mountain you will find the little villages of Jesus Pobre and Pedreguer. Dénia is divided into clear areas (Terminos). The old town centre is the Casco Urbano. To the left of Dénia is the Las Marinas area and to the right is Las Rotas. Some of the larger urbanizations in Dénia include La Sella (surrounding the golf course). Most of the street parking in Dénia is free, however, where spaces are marked with blue lines, you need to purchase a ticket from the machines and display in your windscreen. 127 minutes for 1€ is the maximum stay. One of the nicest avenues in Dénia is Marques de Campo. The trees on either side meet in the middle, offering a shade in the summer. There are some nice shops on this street as well as some fine cafes and restaurants. The N°11 Bar is particularly nice. The historic part of Dénia is best seen on foot as the streets are very narrow with limited parking. You will find several plazas in which to rest. Pictured right is one of the largest, the Plaza Jaime I.

The Almadrava beach - Els Poblets - Denia

Denia Castle There has been a castle gazing over Dénia since Roman times, but one of the most important periods of its development was during the Moorish occupation of Spain, when the lower part of the castle was used by inhabitants in times of siege. The horseshoe arch at the entrance of the castle is from that period. There are remains of buildings from various ages. The castle was used for defensive purposes until the end of the 19th century, from when the terraces were used for growing grapes for raisins, the town’s main export for over one hundred years.

“Fantastic time” Reviewed 9 October 2014 What a fantastic time weve just had in the robinhood very friendly staff food excellent beer tops measures big and atmosphere great would recomend to anybody wanting a good family run pub. See you again when good all benidorm

“Sheer Class” Reviewed 8 October 2014 Have to say after just coming back from a stag do in sunny spain that my stop in bonking benidorm was hilarious. Went to the pub above first but soon went back downstairs because it seems its a local hangout for yobs who have nothing better to do that smoke in your face and try to bait you into a fight. We went to eat and get drunk and not fight. When we went downstairs to the robin hood we saw it was british and found the food to be top dollar. Staff looked exhausted but that aint surprising considering the place was packed to the rafters. Don't know how we missed it but probs because we were dropped outside a macdonalds and the steps right next to it. We went back there a few times, probs because the barman who turned out to be the owner wasnt stingy with the shorts. Happy days, id go again there any day and am happy to recommend it.

“VERY FRIENDLY AND GOOD FOOD, SERVED WITH A SMILE” Reviewed 4 October 2014 I had a jacket potatoe, and also meat pie and chips at this bar, the food was good value, and served with a smile. The place looks at bit tired from the outside, but inside is nice, and friendly. The bar attracts the friendly customers too. Worth a visit.

“Fantastic steak” Reviewed 30 September 2014 We visit this retaurant every time we come to Benidorm we just have to keep coming back the steaks are to die for , friendly staff and a great atmosphere.

“Fantastic Food” Reviewed 28 September 2014 Back in the Robin Hood still fantastic food and atmosphere great family bar thanks for making are holiday

“Cake Heaven” Reviewed 18 September 2013 Just happened on this place by chance and what a stroke of luck !!! I thought I'd pop in for a quick coffee and then spied the showcase. I immediately thought I'd died and gone to heaven but being an atheist I soon realised something much better had happened to me ! I was looking at the most tempting array of confectionery I had ever seen! The pastries! the cakes! the mousse! the ice creams ! it was all too much !! After I had calmed down I ordered a chocolate layered cake and a cafe con leche and spent the next 15 minutes in bliss !!!! If you have a sweet tooth you have not lived until you visit Pasteleria De Sabors!!!

“Amazing ice cream!” Reviewed 22 September 2014 We stopped here after our dinner for ice cream. It was delicious! Very rich and creamy. Perfect after our meal!

“OMG. If you like deserts . . . . !” Reviewed 27 August 2014 Fantastic spot for after dinner treats. Just round the corner from the church at the top of the hill. Save a space for this after dinner. Laid out in cafe style the shop has excellent patisseries and ice creams, although I have to admit on our two visits we never got past the cakes! Patient (as you um and ah over which you want to order!) and great service. Affordable prices and especially good value for this quality. The patissier is based at the shop and serves up various delights on a daily basis.

“Lovely cakes and coffee” Reviewed 24 August 2014 We specifically stopped here due to trip advisor reviews - it's on a lovely, quaint and bustling street in Altea and the cakes were beautifully presented and small enough that you didn't feel guilty eating them! Our boys had ice-cream. Would definitely recommend!

“What a choice.” Reviewed September 20, 2014 A few minutes walk from the Rialto hotel, ideal if you are on half board. A great selection of snacks and meals. Check the chalkboards for specials. Great prices and very friendly staff. A good selection of beers and ciders.

“Excellent” Reviewed September 3, 2014 we called in several times and had breakfast and at night a quick drink before we went out. The breakfast was lovely and the rolls etc really good. Excellent value and the staff were all really nice and friendly. We went in one morning and the lady that served us apologised to us saying she had given us the wrong bill the day before. We asked how much we owed and she told us she owed us 2.4euro. We hadn't even noticed they deducted this from our bill that day. You can have a wee read at the daily newspapers and watch tv. We will be back again on our next visit to Benidorm.

“Best bar in benidorm” Reviewed August 31, 2014 Came here daily, everything on the menu is excellent and great value. Atmosphere was good and staff were very friendly.

“10 out of 10” Reviewed August 24, 2014 Eat here a few times and also called in for a cold drink at the end of a hot afternoon. The food is delicious, great portion sizes and good value for money. The staff are lovely very friendly and welcoming. We have booked our return to Benidorm for next August and we're really looking forward to visiting here again for lunch on our first day.

“great service great food” Reviewed August 4, 2014 Just got back from Benidorm self catering, and found Drop Inn with its brilliant service and brilliant food , also one if best pints of lager, defo worth a visit

“Paris in Altea” Reviewed 14 August 2014 It's so "home" in Altea, this ice bar and patisserie, yet so urban and design-like. Homemade ice cream in a large number and cakes you have not seen before. And yet not expensive, we had breakfast for 3, with croissants, pastries, water, coffee and macaroons for € 10.10. The owner, who has worked in Paris is friendly present almost all the time, the rest of the staff is nice too. Enjoy!

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES wE25

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Emotional issues need to be dealt with this week, but if you’re busy in a practical sense, it may not be your top priority. A heart to heart by the weekend works wonders. Take time to re-assess your opinions of others and you’ll be surprised to find your views have changed. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) You need to take better care of yourself. You’re doing so much for so many people that you’re leaving yourself to the end of the list. Don’t jeopardise your health like this. Personal relationships count for a great deal, so if you get the chance to go away for the weekend, take it. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) Your energy levels are high, so don’t waste them looking in the mirror. Be constructive over work and money issues and do what you can to improve both. Keep a high profile over work and career and if the spotlight shines upon you, make sure you know what you’re talking about. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Your domestic life counts for a great deal this week, but it could also provoke a conflict of interests as not everyone is on the same page. You’ll need to try to split your time between family and friends, and lovers or spouses. You cant please everybody here. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) New experiences over work and health issues gives you a new perspective on a lot of things. Don’t be scared to stick your neck out or take a gamble, especially over money. It looks as if luck is on your side, so go crazy and speculate to accumulate. Could be lucky. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

As you start this new working week, make sure everyone knows that you’re enthusiastic and keen to take control in some way. If you’ve been waiting for important news you may have to be patient for a bit longer. It’s annoying, but it’ll be worth it in the end. Trust me. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) If you’re willing to work hard and do what it takes to get to your destination, you should have no worries about being a success. If on the other hand you think you can sit back, let everyone else do the work while you take the credit, you’re in for a nasty surprise. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) You’d be quite happy to be the centre of attention this week, but the social aspects of your life seem to be on a par with the professional aspects. If love comes knocking at your door, all else will be throw to the wayside. Try to have it all without sacrificing any areas. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) You’re tired and your spirits are flagging, but negative periods never seem to last very long for you, and just as well. The lunar low may be giving you a slower approach, but your mind is still working at breakneck speed. Your agile mind will miss nothing. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) Try to keep everything running at a steady pace as it will leave you enough time to catch your breath between issues. Your hearts desire seems to be within your reach now, but be ready to apply the brakes if you take on more than you can handle. Find a balance. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Brain Teaser Which of the following words is the odd-one-out?

You’ll have a strong desire to agree with others this week, but is it because you genuinely agree, or is it because you cant be bothered thinking for yourself? HOME WORK: NO-EQUIPMENT HOME WORKOUT CAN'T GET TO THE GYM? TRY THIS AT-HOME WORKOUT TO ATTACK EVERY MUSCLE GROUP

Everybody gets pressed for time every now and then (some more than others), and all too often when something’s got to give, it’s the gym. Let's face it, you don't want to skip work or a hot date, so, unfortunately, the gym'd the first thing on the hit list. The answer, then, is a short workout, right? Something that takes, say, 20 minutes tops. You’ll usually be able to squeeze that in between punching out at work and getting ready for your evening activities. But here’s the rub: It may only take you 20 minutes to train, but it takes 10-15 minutes (at least) to drive to the gym, five minutes or so to get in and out of the locker room, then 10-15 minutes to

drive back home. You’re talking at least 45 minutes for the whole deal, but probably more like an hour-plus. Now for the real solution: a 20-minute workout you can do at home. No commute to the health club, no traffic, no packing the gym bag, no waiting for the power rack to open up. Below is a great, quick workout you can do at home (or in a hotel room if you’re on the road) that focuses on the legs, chest and abs. It requires no equipment and, if done with purpose, is intense enough to give you a great pump and shock your system something fierce. Give it a try next time you’re trapped at home and have the training itch.

Short Circuit Perform the following exercises as a circuit, doing one set of each with minimal rest between exercises. If you’re unable to reach the prescribed number of reps in a given set, rest-pause until you reach the rep count. (Rest-pause is where, when

reaching failure during a given set, you rest anywhere from 10-30 seconds and continue repping out.) After each circuit, rest 2 minutes. Repeat the circuit 3-4 times, or however many times you can in 20 minutes. *Feet up on a chair or couch.

PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE..DO I NEED IT?

Most people are aware of the existence of flu vaccines which are now available, but many have not heard of Pneumococcal vaccine. The pneumococcal vaccine protects the lungs from infection by the pneumococcus bacterium (pneumonia). There are 80 types of these bacterium but most cases of pneumonia are caused by the 23 types which are included in the vaccine. In the UK there are around 500,000 cases of pneumonia each year. When infection leads to bacterial meningitis or septicaemia, 20-30% will die. The following groups are recommended to have the vaccine: • All adults 65 years of age and older. • Persons over 2 years of age with chronic heart or lung disorders including: congestive heart failure diabetes mellitus chronic liver disease alcoholism, spinal fluid leaks cardiomyopathy chronic bronchitis or emphysema (COPD) • Persons over 2 years of age with: spleen dysfunction (such as sickle cell disease) lack of spleen function (asplenia) blood malignancy (leukaemias) multiple myeloma, kidney failure cochlear implant • organ transplantation or immunosuppressive conditions, including HIV infection • If elective surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy) or immunosuppressive therapy is planned, the vaccine, where possible, should be given two weeks prior to the procedure. There is also a high rate of pneumonia amongst welders. So if you are a welder, get vaccinated! Unlike the flu vaccine which needs to be given every year, the pneumonia vaccine is a ‘one off’ injection except in special circumstances. Also, it may be given at the same time as the flu vaccine saving you a second trip to the Doctor’s! If you are still unsure as to whether you should receive the vaccine, speak to your family Doctor. Call the Family Medical Centre today, 966 865 072 or visit us on the main road in Albir close to the Sunday market.

BENIDORM DOG HOMING

Where have all the volunteers gone?

Coming to the end of September and we have had a very long hot summer till this last week! Yet throughout the summer the backbone of our group has always been the volunteers. Without them we cannot do the good work that saves the lives of many Spanish dogs. Yet now they have just vanished, so where have they gone? Many people who live here don’t even know that Benidorm has a dog pound to try to help save the lives of the stray and abandoned dogs that would litter the streets. We need to let you know that you can help. Volunteers come and walk the dogs and they come from many places, residents, tourists and people just wanting to do something different and that person could be you and help us fill the huge gap that we have in helpers. Many of whom have been students here over the summer filling in the jobs in your bars and restaurants and getting the chance to learn English. Now it can be your turn to give a little back to this community. So what is Benidorm Dog Homing? Benidorm dog pound is just outside this popular holiday resort. A very short taxi ride from the main hotels and we are always in need of volunteers to walk the dogs in our care. SPAP Benidorm runs the pound to look after animals and they have a policy to protect and not destroy animals. However the shelter provides extremely basic facilities, food is donated from hotels, medical care is limited and it is difficult to fully look after up to 300 or more animals. Benidorm Dog Homing are the volunteers who walk the dogs and give vital support. We need you to spare a bit of your time to help socialize these dogs, take them for a walk and show them that humans can give love too. It’s not just about coming walking, let your fingers help a dog find a home too! Because being a cyberbuddy is a very important job too. I often get asked what a cyberbuddy has to do and I reply ‘Imagine this was your dog and you had to search for a new home, where would you try, what would you do and then please just give it a go and keep your dog’s posts active on Benidorm Dog Homing and other sites a few times a week’ That is the basic job description but what it means to the dogs is

Free varifocal lenses with glasses from 89€

59€ Choose a single pair of glasses from our 59€ range or above, and we’ll give you 1.5 PENTAX Standard varifocal lenses, usual price 69€, free. Or, if you’d rather have varifocal lenses from our other ranges, we’ll give you 69€ off the price, meaning you could get Premium varifocals for 55€, Elite varifocals for 100€, or Tailor-Made varifocals for 165€. And what’s more, an eye test is included in the price. Request an eye test online at specsavers.es or by calling your local store

Benidorm 965 859 577 c/ de Gambo 2 Cannot be used with other offers. Eye test usually 15€. 199€ Fineform and Rimless ranges: include 1.6 PENTAX Standard varifocal lenses. All lenses are scratch-resistant. Extra Options available at an additional charge. Subject to suitability. Ends 2 November 2014. ©2014 Specsavers. All rights reserved.

a chance, hope, a future as without a cyberbuddy on their side it is harder for them to be noticed and their posts slip away deep into the page and they become invisible, forgotten and No Hope! You can find out more about this vital support you can give from anywhere in the world by joining our Facebook page ‘Benidorm Dog Homing’ and looking through all our dogs who are in need of a Buddy and a home. Just mention on the dogs post that you want to be their buddy and I will show you all the information you need and it only takes a few minutes of your time a few days a week. Your help does make a difference and at the happy ending time when a new home is found for your dog, you get to celebrate too! Then the volunteers can take over and with our many language skills we can help get a dog passported and off on its travels to a new home. We do need help and you can make a donation using PayPal to yeso1977@hotmail.com or contact us on Facebook to find out more about our dogs in need! You can help with donations using PayPal to yeso1977@hotmail.com or contact us on Facebook to find out more about our dogs in need! For me walking the dogs gave me connections in this country and help that I never knew I needed. SO being a volunteer is not just about the dogs it’s about us humans too. So now it’s your turn to help, here are The WI! The WI (Women's Institute!) Now named Daisy and Rosie Pound Life Sept 2013- HOME NEEDED This lovely Mother and Daughter (about 6 and 2 years old) deserve some quality time together. They love a gentle walk together, a chance for some company and if they were in the UK you can imagine them wearing straw hats and talking about cakes! Please help to give these girls the home they deserve, they are so gentle and trusting.

leWis Season 8 Episode 2 of 6 Entry Wounds - Part Two Part two of two. Most people, when they retire, look forward to having more time to themselves to enjoy all the things they never had time to do when they were working. But not Robbie Lewis. When this series returned for a new run last week, he was a man lost and, despite his attempts to build a wooden canoe, was feeling rudderless. So, he jumped at the chance to return to the police force, albeit in a temporary capacity. . ITV London 10:00pm Fri 17 Oct

hiTler's hidden druG habiT Obviously today nobody would attempt to paint Hitler in a positive light, but during the Nazi era, he rose to power and popularity for a reason. He was portrayed to the German people as a great man, one who was in control of his own destiny and that of his country, and who was infallible - all but a super-human. Unsurprisingly, this was far from the truth. However, the facts, which this documentary gleans from his physician's diaries, are more remarkable than any fiction. Channel 4 9:00pm Sun 19 Oct

SPORT BENIDORM Vs ENGLAND/SCOTLAND INTERNATIONAL 2014

Last week Benidorm took part in the 1st inter league pool match against an England & Scotland mixed pool team. Although the result didn’t go in favour of the Benidorm team, a lot of good pool was played as the away team had some exceptional players. The games were played over 3 days at The Grill House & at The Jukebox with the away team winning all 3 days and with that THE BENIDORM CHALLENGE CUP which was sponsored by Benidorm Printing.

GOOD WEEK LEVY WINS AFTER WIPEOUT

Alexander Levy captured the Portugal Masters trophy after more rain on Sunday meant the tournament was declared over after 36 holes.

The whole match was played in good spirit with new friends been made all the time. I would personally like to thank all there players and wish them well in their next challenge against the Tenerife league. Hopefully Benidorm can get its hands on the trophy next year.

Leader Levy was able to complete just a single hole before the weather intervened again during the final round at Oceånico Victoria Golf Club. In a tournament already reduced to 54 holes by lightning and heavy rain earlier in the week, another deluge left parts of the course unplayable shortly after the final group had teed off at 1pm.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE As the Fantasy League pauses for a 2nd International Break,we can take stock of what has been happening in our Mini Leagues & K.O.Cup Competition. Last Weeks K.O.Cup Competition didn't provide to many shock Results with the exception of Rocky's Mini Spurs who are top of our Junior League losing to Eric's Team City Slickers, who are currently placed at No 189th in the League by 35-25. Pauline's Vodka Army were the only Team in the top 5 to lose when they lost the Battle with Big Sam's Army by 35-26.Rachel's Team Blue Murder who are the current Leaders of our Mark Carter Ladies Section cruised through to the next Round by hammering Lee's Team Real Lee- Thal by 39 -17.Last Season's Manager Tich who won this Competition saw his Team Blue Tigers scrape through by narrowly beating Vince's Bars a Loner by 21-19. Eight of our Junior Teams progressed to the next Round and they are Sponge Bob,Dog Dale,How's Ya Father,Power Blueboys,Teiger's Tigers,Abby Brigade, Moon Kitten 1 and Boshy's Beasts. Ginger Ninja who are lying 2nd in our Junior League are involved in a Replay with Mel's Blue Boys which will take place this Weekend along with 5 other Ties which finished level. One of the most interesting Ties involved Ian's Team Rock Bottom who played his Missus's Team Never Stop Moaning and came out winning by 23-20. No Tea for Ian that Night ! The next Round will take place on the Weekend 8th & 9th November. The Draw will be up on our website which is www.alfazffl.com as soon as the Replays have been decided. Moving on to have a look at how our Mini-Leagues are shaping up, in Moraira at Tich's Bar Richard's Team Pocket Rockets have a 5 point advantage over Dave's Robbies Teddy Bears at the top. I think Pocket Rockets will be a Team to watch out for in the Main League because they have potent strike force in Aguero,Costa and Naismith who have so far between them have rattled up 113 points. Macca's Albir Villains are in pole position at Hepburns in Albir,Wyn at Wyndhams is in full control of his League with his "B " Team leading Dennis's Team The Potters by 27 points. Also in Albir at The Local Eric's Team Full Metal Jackets have replaced Alan's Donkey Heads at the top with a 10

Sponsored by point advantage. Over in Benidorm at the Rincon end the League Leaders Steve's Cowden Red Devils have a massive 30 point lead over Keith's Team Max & Paddy while up the Calle Londres at the Drop Inn Neil's Blue Moon Rising are just hanging on to a 1 point lead over Clarkie's Deportivoclarkoruna. In La Cala at the Beer Academy Kevin's Team Beer Academy are looking good with a 14 point advantage over Rob's side The Bulgars. Also in that neck of the Woods Terry's Magic Moments League have Ian's Tasty Toffees leading the way. The Las Vegas Clan who have recently visited the Gambling City have John's Team Cracker United backing themselves to finish top of their Mini -League has they are 9 points in front Ginger Ninja. Costa Blanca Electrical Services who have taken part in the Fantasy for many Seasons are being led by Big Sam's Army who are still celebrating their victory over Pauline's Vodka Army in the K.O.Cup.They are 17 points in front of Darren's Finestrat Reds. Last but not least is the Mini -League from my Local in England The Packet who are at the moment visiting Benidorm for a quiet Week's rest. Mark's Team Inter Rubber have a substantial 25 point advantage over Coey & Doey's Team Parkwyddn. At the other end over their Table Mark's Son Calum's Team Rees Red Devils are holding the rest up. Not like Father like Son! Chelsea's Diego Costa is still the Top Player in the Fantasy League with a tally of 52 points. The nearest player to him is West Brom's Berahino with 41 points to his name. Top Defender is Chelsea's Ivanovic with 31 points while the Top Mid-Fielder is Swansea's Sigurdsson with 32 points.Spur's Keeper Lloris has taken over the top Keeper spot from Swansea's Fabianski by 1 point. Well that's the run down on all the Mini-Leagues which we don't normally get chance to do and the Cup K.O.This Week the Fantasy will be back up and running hopefully with all the Players back fit for action.

Wigan prop Ben Flower becomes the first player in Super League history to be sent off in a Grand Final after this moment of madness at Old Trafford. The Wigan prop forward was shown a red card by referee Phil Bentham just two minutes into the derby against St Helens for a punch on New Zealand stand-off Lance Hohaia. lower appeared to take exception to Hohaia's use of a forearm on him during a Wigan attack and reacted by knocking him to the ground with a left hook. Flower then proceeded to strike his opponent with a second punch to his face while he laid motionless on the turf. St.Helens went on to win their first Grand FInal since 2006 beating Wigan 14-6.

MERCEDES SECURE CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPIONSHIP Formula 1. When the German marque last dominated the sport back in the 1950s with Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss behind the wheel, the trophy was not awarded to the best team. It first came into existence in 1958, by which points Mercedes had withdrawn its works team. It would not return until 2010.

Mercedes have clinched their first ever Formula 1 constructors’ championship after Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg finished first and second in today’s Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. The team has dominated the sport in 2014, winning thirteen of the sixteen races so far thanks to its superior power unit and car design following the change in the regulations for this season. No team has come close to challenging the Silver Arrows in regular conditions, with Daniel Ricciardo claiming the remaining three wins for Red Bull at races where Mercedes has hit trouble.

This victory marks the first year since 2009 that Red Bull has not won the constructors’ championship, marking the end of an era. Mercedes needed just 25 points to make the championship safe, but Hamilton and Rosberg clinched it in style by finishing first and second, bringing home the maximum score of 43 points for the ninth time this season.

Today in Sochi, the champagne corks could finally be popped as the one-two finish for Hamilton and Rosberg saw the team pull a further 33 points clear of nearest challengers Red Bull in the constructors’ championship. With just three races and 172 points remaining, this means that Mercedes cannot be caught. Hamilton was quick to congratulate his team over the radio, calling it “history in the making”. It marks Mercedes’ first ever constructors’ championship in

This victory will allow the drivers to turn their attention to the drivers’ championship, which took another swing in Hamilton’s favor after Rosberg was forced into making an early pit stop on Sunday. He fought hard to finish second behind Hamilton, but now trails by 17 points after four successive defeats.

GRAND PRIX GLORY FOR VAN GERWEN World No 1 Michael van Gerwen secured the World Grand Prix title after beating James Wade 5-3 in a thrilling final in Dublin.

Wade was bidding to land the title for the third time, having previously triumphed in 2007 and 2010, but it was reigning world champion van Gerwen who proved too strong on the night. Van Gerwen told Sky Sports 1 HD: "This was an amazing tournament. The performance of everyone was so high. That I could win at this level is fantastic. James deserved more than this because he had a tough week, so I have to say well done to him. There can only be one winner and I'm so glad that's me." Wade, who hit a nine-dart finish in the second round and knocked out Phil Taylor in the last eight, won the opening set in the race to five after his opponent had failed to take out 12 allowing Wade to nip in and land tops. Despite taking 11 darts to get started in the fourth leg of the sec-

ond set, 2012 champion van Gerwen held his throw thanks to an impressive 13-dart leg in the next to level up the final. The 31-year-old Aldershot thrower punished van Gerwen with a wonderful 117 finish in the fourth leg of the third set to the delight of a packed crowd inside the Citywest Hotel.

Nine points from three games in a mediocre Euro 2016 qualifying group means fans can begin to dust off their French phrase books as surely not even England can make a drama out of this one. The expanded format for the next finals has removed any sense of tension from the qualifying stages, leaving Roy Hodgson`s England side to cut loose in a series of one-sided fixtures against Europe`s makeweight nations. That is the idea anyway, although so far there is scant evidence that England are setting out on a brave new path out of the doldrums and apathy hanging over the national team. A decent 2-0 opening victory in Switzerland put England in complete control of Group E but the performances in the next two games against San Marino and Estonia have produced more gloom. It took England nearly 25 minutes to break down Europe`s worst side at Wembley last week on the way to a 5-0 victory over San Marino -- a ludicrously lop-sided fixture in which Hodgson deemed it necessary to start with two defensive midfielders. With San Marino`s sole pur-

pose being to build a wall in front of their goal, England spent most of the first half passing the ball around harmlessly in front of them while the pace and trickery of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andros Townsend and Adam Lallana was left on the bench. Against Estonia on Sunday it was a similar story as Hodgson`s side laboured to a 1-0 win in Tallinn. Wayne Rooney`s strike 17 minutes from time sealed the points but the captain had been so ineffective prior to his goal that he was apparently about to be substituted by Rickie Lambert. "It was a frustrating night for him. He had a lot of the ball, had a lot of half-chances, so I think he`d have been bitterly disappointed if he`d come off the field without having scored a goal and I think he would have blamed himself," Hodgson said of Rooney.

With England trotting out the same old lines and no one capable of a moment of off the cuff magic, it took the visitors until nearly halftime to register a shot on target.

Even when Estonia skipper Ragnar Klavan received his marching orders early in the second half, England failed to break the shackles.

Hodgson will say "job done" but with qualification now almost assured, fans will need to see something to get the pulse racing in the next international break in November if

interest is not to dwindle still further. Englands next match qualifier is against Slovenia on Saturday 15th November, followed by a friendly against Scotland on Tuesday 18th.

EURO QUALIFIERS: ROUND UP LATEST

Group A Iceland beat the Netherlands for the first time in 11 meetings to heap pressure on Hiddink. Sigurdsson scored scored twice before the break. He converted from the penalty spot in the 10th after Stefan de Vrij had brought down Birkir Bjarnason and volleyed powerfully into the roof of the net in the 42nd after the Dutch defense failed to clear a corner. "It really is painful that we lost here," said Dutch captain Robin van Persie. But he refused to blame Hiddink. "Guus is a fantastic coach," Van Persie said. "We are all working as hard as we can to play well." Turkey remained anchored to the bottom of the group with Kazakhstan after gaining its first point with a 1-1 draw at Latvia. After opening their campaign with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and beating Turkey by the same score on Friday, the Czechs wrapped up victory over Kazakhstan inside an hour thanks to goals by Borek Dockal, David Lafata and Ladislav Krejci. The hosts showed off their prowess at set pieces with two late goals by Yuri Logvinenko from corners, on either side of a fourth Czech strike from Tomas Necid. In Latvia, Bilal Kisa opened the scoring for Turkey shortly after halftime with a long-range shot and Valerijs Sabala equalized with a 54th minute penalty.

In Cardiff, Wales took a two-goal lead within 23 minutes through early strikes from substitute David Cotterill and Hal RobsonKanu and somehow still made it a cliffhanger after Vincent Laban got Cyprus back into the game by halftime and Wales midfielder Andy King was sent off in the 47th. In Andorra, Omer Damari scored a hat-trick for Israel and Tomer Hemed added a penalty strike in injury time for the easy win.

Group B World Cup qualifier Bosnia-Herzegovina is in trouble after earning only two points from three games, allowing a victory over Belgium to slip away through the fingers of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who fumbled an easy second-half shot from Radja Nainggolan in a 1-1 home draw. Meanwhile, Wales consolidated the lead in the group by beating Cyprus 2-1 to sit one point ahead of Israel, which swept past Andorra 4-1. Wales has seven points from three games with Israel on six and Belgium on four from two games. Cyprus has three points. In the matchup of the only two nations from the group who reached the World Cup finals, Bosnia took the lead in the 28th through captain Edin Dzeko before Belgium got the equalizer through Nainggolan in the 51st minute. "This is a difficult away game, so this is a solid result," said Belgium captain Vincent Kompany.

Group H Italy hit the goal frame four times but only Southampton forward Pelle could truly find the target against 155th-ranked Malta. Making his international debut at the age of 29, Pelle took advantage of a loose ball inside the box following a corner in the 23rd minute. Both Malta and Italy finished with 10 men. Malta captain Michael Mifsud was shown a direct red card for a foul on Alessandro Florenzi in the 27th even though replays showed there was hardly any foul at all. Still, Malta put up stiff defensive resistance the rest of the way and Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci was sent off for a last-man foul on Andre Schembri in the 73rd. In Croatia, Ivan Perisic scored twice and Andrej Kramaric, Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric also added goals. Plus, there was an own goal from Rashad Sadygov Also, Norway beat Bulgaria 2-1 with goals from Tarik Elyounoussi and Havard Nielsen. Norway's 15-year-old midfielder Martin Odegaard became the youngest player to appear in a European Championship qualifier when he came on as a second-half substitute. Croatia and Italy lead with nine points each, Norway has six, Bulgaria three and Malta and Azerbaijan zero. "Having points in the table should give us confidence," Italy coach Antonio Conte said. "We won but we could have been more decisive in front of the goal. There's margin for improvement."

Big guns Netherlands, Italy and Belgium all struggle

The Netherlands fell to another surprising loss and fellow continental powers Italy and Belgium also struggled in European Championship qualifying on Monday, while Croatia showed off its goal-scoring credentials. Meanwhile, Wales stayed atop Group B with a 2-1 win over Cyprus and are on course to qualify for their first major championship, with the 2016 tournament in France expanded to 24 teams for the first time.
