SPAIN IS PRAISED FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Spain is leading the way for shocking the Eurozone back to life, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Paris-based think-tank picked Spain as the country to follow as their report slammed the attitudes of the Eurozone’s largest economies. France, Germany and Italy were all told they should be learning from Spain – which has pushed through reforms to boost the economy – rather than being bogged down in discussion. Speaking before a meeting of world leaders at the G20 summit in Brisbane, Australia, Catherine Mann – the OECD’s chief economist – praised Spain for restructuring its banking sectors and driving down labour costs to revitalise the economy. The Paris-based think-tank picked Spain as the country to follow as their report slammed the attitudes of the Eurozone’s largest economies. France, Germany and Italy were all told they should be learning from Spain – which has pushed through reforms to boost the economy – rather than being bogged down in discussion. Speaking before a meeting of world leaders at the G20 summit in Brisbane, Australia, Catherine Mann – the OECD’s chief economist – praised Spain for restructuring its banking sectors and driving down labour costs to revitalise the economy. Mann added that world leaders had plans on the table to boost the G20 GDP by about 2% by 2018, equivalent to an extra €1.3 trillion of income.

Spain is home to more endangered species than any other European country According to latest Red List of Threatened Species, a total of 552 endangered species – including the Iberian lynx and the Mediterranean monk seal – live in Spain. This is nearly double that of the second-worst country on the European list, Greece, which has 286 ‘at risk’ species, according to the 50th annual list released by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Southern European countries are particularly bad, with Italy home to 276 endangered species and Portugal home to 254. This follows a worrying global trend with an extra 1,125 species joining the list worldwide in the last 12 months, up to 22,413 species. The announcement comes as green groups – including Ecologistas en Accion and the World Wildlife Fund – have slammed the PP government for continuing to allow hunting in Spain’s national parks.

Workers in Spain are treated to an annual 30 days paid leave, nearly twice as much as their Asian or American counterparts. The figures come from an annual survey by travel group Expedia, which analyses holiday entitlement for nearly 8,000 workers in 24 countries. The survey also looks at how many of those allotted days workers actually take. Along with Denmark, France and Germany, Spanish employees get the highest number of days off worldwide, and make sure they take every day given to them. This gives them more than double the holidays offered to – and taken by – workers in countries as diverse as South

Korea, Hong Kong and the USA. Other Europeans have an average of 28 days off every year. Brits meanwhile take an average of 25 out of 26 days, and are willing to go to surprising lengths to get more.

On 21 December, the Association of Pensioners Raco de l'Albir and Development Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Marina Baixa (MEMBA) are holding an event to raise funds for several local charities.

There will be over 25 stalls selling crafts and second hand items, plus for 5 euros you can purchase paella and a drink. All the proceeds from the giant paella will be donated to the Social Volunteer Association L'Alfas, who manage the food bank. Last year’s event was extremely well attended, and the organisers would like 2014 to be even better.

The organisation, based in l'Albir, was established in 2010 and currently has 368 members of various nationalities.
