For some expats who have worked abroad all or most of their lives could find it difficult to qualify as you need a minimum of 10 qualifying years of National Insurance Contributions However you can use two years of work in another EEA country to top up contributions if for instance you have worked for at least eight years in the UK and have made full NI contributions for that time, but of course you will only be paid the basic state pension that matches the 8 years you put into the system It is also handy to remember that for those who have worked abroad, may have been contributing to their version of NI and some of those schemes are more generous than the UK system.

BRITISH CONSULATE PRESS RELEASE Expatriates should plan ahead for their care needs in order to avoid big problems in later years, local charities and social workers have warned. At a workshop organised on the 2nd December by the British Consulate in Alicante, charities and social workers stressed the importance of thinking now about the future in order to avoid problems when expats get older and become more dependent on outside help. Simple measures such as learning some Spanish, registering on the padrón and taking out a funeral plan can all prevent Brits needing emergency support later on. The workshop brought together social workers and charity welfare officers from across Alicante and Murcia, and aimed to equip them with more information on what support is available for vulnerable Brits, both locally and back in the UK. One social worker explained how it is essential to register on the ‘padrón’ in order to

access the same support as Spanish nationals. If expats fail to register, it is important to realise that social services will later be unable to provide any help. Kim Stollard from the British Benevolent Fund, a charity that helps Brits in need, says: “I regularly see cases where a distressed British national needs emergency help because they failed to plan for future difficulties or care needs. My message to expats is plan now so you can enjoy the future more, with the reassurance that you have thought about the care and support you will one day need.” Heathrow Airport Travel Care explained to the charities and social workers how they can help when vulnerable Brits need to return to the UK, and the Red Cross updated the workshop on the agreement that was recently signed with the Embassy, which aims to help British nationals access Red Cross volunteering opportunities and obtain Red Cross support in English.

By SPENCER WILLIAMS As reported in the Telegraph, the cut-off point will be reduced from 13 weeks spent overseas to just four from next April, Chancellor George Osborne announced. Pension credit is an extra payment that guarantees most people over the age of 62 a minimum income. Those on housing benefit will also be hit by the same reduction, which is often claimed with the pension credit. This could leave those who visit Spain during the cold British winters for health or economic or even family reasons in a bit of a conundrum. The single-tier state pension will be worth £155.65 per week from nextApril. This will also mean that it will take longer to get a full state pension from next year as well with National Insurance payments needing to rise to 35 years instead of 30 years. This will also make it more difficult for those that may have

Dutch police officers covertly recorded meetings that proved Dennis and Wilson were sourcing cocaine from South America and arranging its transport in shipping containers carrying legitimate cargo. Their associates were then responsible for extracting the drugs using corrupt port officials. Coordinated strikes in the Netherlands and UK resulted in multiple arrests in October 2013 but Dennis, who was in Spain at the time, evaded arrest for nearly two years. The war on drug trafficking continues as people continue to bring drugs into Spain through “Drug Mules” (people who carry drugs in or inside their body). The National Police dismantled a gang of traffickers in Benidorm last week carrying hashish which led to seven arrests of people involved in the gang. The arrests came as part of an operation during November and ended with the arrest of six men of Moroccan nationality and a Spanish woman as well as the seizure of more than 3.5 kilograms of hashish. The investigations began after national police arrested several people at the border post of Algeciras for trying to traffic Hashish into Spain they also found that Alicante were the drugs final destination. At the beginning of November at the same border point to a 35 year old male from Morocco was found to be carrying more than 100 packs of hashish, weighing

around 1kg The police later detected that two other men who had crossed the border were hiding hashish inside their body, they used this opportunity to keep the individuals under surveillance until they arrived in Benidorm the next day, where they contacted a man and a resident woman in the town and that proved to be the Final recipients of the drugs. The police moved into arrest all four suspects and in this case police found that the ‘’Drug Mules’, had concealed a total of 209 packets of Hashish, weighing close to 2 kg. After these arrests police raided the hose of the couple who were receiving the drugs, where they found several packets of hashish prepared for sale and also arrested two other members of the family. The detainees, who had a history of similar incidents were brought charged after testifying in police

custody in which three of them were imprisoned. Hiding drugs inside the body poses a serious risk to health of the user, exposing themselves if any wrapping

is broken or punctured, and can cause serious bodily injury, often entailing serious consequences and a high risk of a fatal outcome.

GOLDEN LEAVES CONTINUES TO GROW

The party gathered on a sunny Tuesday lunchtime for the grand opening of the prestigious new office of Golden Leaves International on the Avenida del Pla in Javea. The company who primarily focused on Funeral Plans has expanded its interests and formed a hub to grow from. This new centre will host additional services such as insurance, advice on wills and other legal matters, money management and to help with the maze of Spanish bureaucracy making the expats life simpler. The invitees were a pleasant mix of business collaborators and long standing customers who were treated to fine wine and tapas whilst a local musician played in the background. Golden Leaves International directors Stephen Rowland and Barry Floyd

were present to assist the Spanish operations director, Emma Quantrill host this opening event where their guest of honour Jose Cholvi , the mayor of Javea, cut the ribbon to formerly open the site and show the councils support of new businesses. They may be new to Javea but with 30 years’ in the market place they have a wealth of experience to offer.

Dead nurse found in home after five years

The decomposed body of the 49-yearold was discovered on Monday by workmen repairing the outside of her apartment building. Workmen spotted the skeletal remains of the woman, named as Pilar M, on Monday morning while they were working on the outside of her apartment building in the centre of Cádiz, southern Spain. “Some workers who were renovating the exterior of the building noticed an open window and discovered the lifeless body of a woman,” police sources confirmed. They called the fire brigade which managed to access the apartment at around 10am on Monday and discovereand later confirmed that the body was that of Pilar M, who was born in Cádiz in 1961.

They also confirmed that no one had reported the woman missing and that she had left her job as a nurse in 2010 because of “psychological problems”. She lived in the flat inherited from her parents, who had died some time ago, and was an only child. Utilitiy companies had sent her notices of defaulted bills, and finally cut the supplies after not hearing from their client. The body showed no sign of violence, but police said due to the advanced decomposition of the body they were waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The apartment building had no other residents except for an office on the first floor.

A BIT OF EVERYHTING Amateur Painting Group Show Off Their Work

Until the 14th December cultural centre is hosting the exhibition “A bit of everything”, produced by ‘Crearte Albir’, a group of painters which include - Carmela García, José María Kaspers, Pepi Martinez, Julia Serrano, Pepa Vazquez, Susana Gosalvez, Tina Lara, Olga Reinoso and Nieke Vanwambeke. This association consists of amateur painters, and was started in 2008. They meet every Monday and Wednesday at the cultural centre for painting in a relaxed atmosphere. This is not a workshop and are not being taught, but use each other for influence and work side by side as they listen and assist each other. This association is open to anyone who likes painting and drawing and they have room for all kinds of people and styles. “Our goal will is the expression of our artistic concerns through painting, drawing and perhaps in the future also other artwork,” they said from Crearte Albir. The opening ceremony, held on Friday in the House of Culture, was attended by the mayor of Culture, Mayte Garcia, along with several associates.

Albir will be holding its annual Christmas market on Sunday December 6th, every year there is a fantastic hustle and bustle of people looking to grab some Christmas bargains and pick out a few stocking fillers. The market is always popular especially with visitors from nearby towns. U3A Vall del Pop CHRISTMAS QUIZ AT PEPE’S

On Thursday 26th November a gathering of 70 members of the U3A Vall del Pop met at Pepe’ Restaurant, Alcalali to have their brains tested at a Quiz Night. Peter Tomlin was the Quiz Master aided and abetted by Anna Cameron, both of whom had been determined to fox many of us with questions during the first half on Christmas and Food and Drink, followed by some corkers with the half-time cryptic Town Names and Dingbats. While scratching our heads for the answers we also tucked into our delicious supper and were treated to a visit by Santa Claus who presented everyone with a gold coin chocolate ones of course in gold foil! We then got our heads down for the second round for the Music and General

Knowledge questions, during which many groans were emitted as we tried to remember golden oldies of music and film. After great deliberation the winners of the quiz, all of whom received a bottle of wine, were announced as follows:-

CHRISTMAS WINDOW COMPETITION

Councillor for Commerce, Anna Alvado, has announced the basis for businesses who wish to participate in the next edition of the Christmas window competition. Alvado noted, “The aim of this competition is to encourage creativity and decoration in the shops of Altea Christmas. “ As explained by the mayor, the contest is open to all retailers. Those interested can register at the office of Commerce (Tel 965 841 300.) Until 15 December at 2pm. As a novelty with respect to previous editions, this year the judges will be joined by a representative of owners/managers of a local establishments, which will be chosen randomly from among all those who apply. To participate as a judge, they must also notify the Department of Commerce to the 15th of December at 2pm. To do this, they must meet the conditions and be a retailer in the town which is not participating in the competition. All registrants will receive a certificate of participation. As for the awards, three will be awarded: - 1st Prize is worth 500 euros of shopping vouchers for Altea and two weeks on radio Altea, valued at 150 euros; , the second prize is worth 350 euros of shopping vouchers for Altea; -and the third prize is worth 150 euros of shopping vouchers for Altea. man stEALS £4000 of jewellery from airport security tray

by SPENCER WILLIAMS A man from Belfast has been convicted of stealing £4000 worth of jewellery from an airport security tray. Keith Howard (47), claimed that when he saw the jewellery in the tray, he was going to report it to lost property AFTER he returned from his week long holiday in Benidorm. Howard from Banbury Street, Belfast lifted the jewellery out of the tray and told his wife to put it in her handbag on August 22 of this year. He was convicted of theft after a contest was held at Antrim Magistrates Court on Tuesday. District Judge Alan White said Howard’s account was the most ‘preposterous story he had heard in years.’ Judge White said: “You didn’t have to pick it up, you could have given it to security men standing three feet away. To put it into a handbag for a week and take it to Benidorm is absolutely ludicrous.” Speaking at the trial, Howard claimed that when he found the jewellery in the tray in the security area - rather

than report it to staff or lost property - he would do this upon returning from holiday. He said: “I saw the box had jewellery in it. I said to my wife that somebody had left their jewellery behind. I told her to put it in the zipped part of her bag and when we get back from holiday we would report it to lost property.” When asked why he didn’t report it as lost property at the time, he claimed he didn’t know where to take it. “Basically I didn’t know where it (lost property) was in the airport at that time and thought I would have more time to do it when I arrived home.” His wife gave evidence at the contest, she said: “My tray was behind Keith’s he told me to put it into my handbag and give it to lost property when we came home. I wasn’t thinking.” Judge White said “When people leave something behind in the security area they don’t expect it to have gone to Benidorm with somebody for a week. I have absolutely no doubt they were stealing it.”

These awards are given to theme parks across Europe every year, there are 13 different categories which include “Best water attraction”, “Best indoor attraction” (Dark Ride), “Best new attraction” or simply “Best Attraction” - Terra Mitica has been one of the few Spanish parks that have won an award and for 3rd time the ‘Syncope’ ride won Best Attraction. ‘Syncope’ ls a pendulum like ride installed in the area of Greek area of the park, it stands at around 35 meters high and reaches speeds close to 60mph (100kph) and is recognized internationally as one of the best attractions and Europe and won the same award in 2012 and 2013.



Stress is a natural physiological reaction that occurs in all living beings. This method allows for extremely fast detection, and can be monitored regularly and allows immediate intervention if

necessary. This is a huge breakthrough in this type of detection, and now measuring hormone levels in blood is no longer necessary. Saliva collection is fast and does not add to the stress to the animal. The taking of the sample takes a few seconds simply by swabbing the mouth on the mucous membranes to successfully obtain the desired sample. MAN RESCUED AFTER HOUSE FIRE A 93-year-old man was rescued by firefighters last week after a fire broke out in his home in the early hours of the morning in the La Soliva area, He was trapped by the fire which apparently was caused by a short circuit originating from the kitchen in the house,

Emergency services were alerted by a 112 call and local police Guardia Civil patrol and firefighters swiftly attended the scene The local police reported that the house had three occupants, two managed to get out of the house but the 93 year old man was trapped in his bedroom, so firefighters proceeded to the rescue. It apparently took several attempts to get to the bedroom,

due to the significant accumulation of smoke inside the house. Finally, he was rescued and removed from the building alive and conscious he was placed in an ambulance and taken to the hospital in Denia. The fire originated in the kitchen of the two-storey house, which was located on the top floor of the building, apparently as a result of a short circuit in an appliance, sources have stated.

The Tram struck a car last week as it passed through the avenue of Miriam Blasco of Alicante in Sant Joan close to El Campello hand which luckily left the two passengers in the car with only minor injuries, with concussion and whiplash, it was reported by local sources. Apparently, the people in the car were tourists and failed to respect the signalling and clashed with the TRAM, which could not continue its journey and was taken back to the workshops of El Campello to be repaired.

English Choir Concert The English choir of Teulada- Moraira were certainly stepping out in style for their annual Autumn Concert which took place last week at Salon de Actos. Dressed in their in their new blue sparkly costumes they treated us ‘A Transatlantic Conversation’ featuring songs from the shows and popular music from both sides of the great ocean. They promised us a feast of fun as they took us on a musical journey through the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s and the audiences were not disappointed. Excerpts from favorite American musicals such as’ Most Happy Feller’’West side story’ which ‘Paint your Wagon’ was first premiered in 50’s were contrasted with numbers from ‘Salad days’ and ‘My Fair Lady’ which were around at the same time in UK. For the 60’s ‘Oliver’ and ‘were compared ‘The Lion King’ were compared to ‘Sweet Charity’ The Beatles,Mummas and Poppas, and Beach boys music followed and the ladies gave a delightful rendition of ‘Queens’ We will Rock You. It certainly was a fun filled evening and very professionally presented. Under the baton of Joanna Baldwin the choir are now well into rehearsal for their Christmas Carol Concerts. The first one will take place in Lliber Town Square as part of their Christmas Market on Saturday 12th December.

Which Companies Offer the Cheapest House Insurance?

Everyone wants the best deal and over the last few years prices have dropped, most likely due to the lack of demand because of the property slump.

Competition between companies has also grown, and,of course in most cases the main reason why one company will win clients over others is down to the price. During the property boom years, house insurers could barely keep up with the demand as the majority of people that purchased a property through a bank with a mortgage had no choice but to take out a home insurance policy as part of the agreement. With the recent crash, insurers have been hit hard. Consulting agency Global Actuarial has carried out a detailed study into prices currently being charged by home insurance companies what is on offer. The four companies with the lowest prices on the market at the

moment are: Mapfre, Plus Ultra, Reale and Zurich – all fairly well-known names.

Data was gathered for three types of property; a 70 sq. m apartment; an apartment of 85 sq. m; and a 200 sq. m duplex family home that gave the following averages: Plus Ultra: 234€ Mapfre: 241€ Reale: 274€ Zurich: 274€ However, many companies cannot solely rely on a low price to capture new clients. Some, more than others, are also very conscious of the importance of offering a wide range of other services. Some are even offering services like repairing electrical

goods, such as kettles, or even distance IT support and assistance with fitting together and putting up IKEA furniture in a bid to stand out from other companies and attract new clients.

European Commission tells banks to repay customers’ hit by so-called floor clauses in their mortgage People living in Spain could soon receive payouts after the European Commission told banks to repay customers’ hit by so-called floor clauses in mortgage deals. Around 10% of Spanish mortgage holders are affected by the ‘clausulas suelos’. Adicae, the association of Spanish bank users, has estimated that the clauses have cost the average client around €3,000 a year and have been partly responsible for 90% of evictions in Spain over the last few years. These minimum-rate interest clauses charged mortgage holders higher rates, even when Spain’s benchmark Euribor hit historic lows of 1.3%. However, the European Commissions opinion is not binding, but the ruling is requesting payment be made for the full duration of the loan. Still to this day many banks are still refusing to remove the clauses despite Spain’s own High Court ruling in May 2013 that the clauses should be repaid from that date. The banks that have removed the clauses include, BBVA, Abanca and Cajamar, with Caixabank also eliminating most of its clauses at a cost of about €220 million a year to the bank. Banks that still need to remove the clauses include Sabadell and Unicaja.

Christmas Mince Pies

Method

To make the pastry, rub 225g cold, diced butter into 350g plain flour, then mix in 100g golden caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball – don’t add liquid – and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough. You can use the dough immediately, or chill for later. Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6/fan 180C. Line 18 holes of two 12-hole patty tins, by pressing small walnut-sized balls of pastry into each hole. Spoon 280g mincemeat into the pies. Take slightly smaller balls of pastry than before and pat them out between your hands to make round lids, big enough to cover the pies. Top the pies with their lids, pressing the edges gently together to seal – you don’t need to seal them with milk or egg as they will stick on their own. (The pies may now be frozen for up to 1 month). Beat 1 small egg and brush the tops of the pies. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with icing sugar. They will keep for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container.

Method

Place 4 eggs, 2 egg yolks, caster sugar and milk in a saucepan. Heat slowly whilst stirring continuously; bring the temperature up to 72°C then remove the saucepan from the heat and keep stirring until it has cooled to around 60°C, this will take about 5 minutes. Once it is below 60C, pour the mixture through a sieve to capture any overcooked lumps. Add the vanilla extract and the nutmeg, stir and refrigerate the mixture. Once cool, add the plain yoghurt and gently whisk together for a delicious and refreshing eggnog. You can add other flavours in place of the vanilla and nutmeg and/or use double cream in place of the yogurt. Adults might want to add some rum or bourbon too for a grown up drink.

1 tbsp vanilla extract 0.5 tsp grated nutmeg 150 ml (5.3fl oz) plain yoghurt

DO YOU HAVE AN OVERACTIVE BLADDER? Can’t pass a loo without taking the opportunity to nip in?! You may have overactive bladder syndrome Overactive bladder syndrome is also known as an irritable bladder or detrusor instability (the detrusor being the bladder muscle). Symptoms include: -Passing urine frequently ie more than 7 times per a day. Some sufferers need to pass urine much more than this! - Being unable to hold urine in for very long. You need to go, and you need to go NOW! - Not making it to the loo in time. And ending up with a damp undercarriage! -Getting up to pee more than once a night

These symptoms may also be caused by other illnesses or by a simple urine infection but when these have been ruled out and no cause can be found, overactive bladder syndrome may be diagnosed. The cause of this problem is not known but sufferers have a faulty message system between the brain and the bladder! In a normal situation, the bladder fills with urine and when it needs to be emptied a message is sent to the brain to tell us to find a loo soon. We have plenty of time to find a convenience get comfortably seated, the bladder muscle contracts and urine is expelled. Not so with overactive bladder syndrome! Faulty signals cause the bladder to contract suddenly and in an erratic fashion even when there is very little urine in the bladder.

The problem is much more common than you might think, probably due to the fact that people feel embarrassed about bladder problems and many don’t even like to talk to their Doctor about it. Studies have found that as many as 1-6 people are affected and the good news is that there is a lot that can be done to cure the problem! Overactive bladder syndrome can cause terrible embarrassment and curtail your normal activities and thus enjoyment of life. If you are having problems with your bladder find an understanding Doctor or Nurse to have a chat with. It could well change your life.

Serena’s crash & burn on week 7

by DAVID MORRIS - Press Officer After their emphatic 10-0 win last week, Serena’s entertained the London Bar A team in the Benidorm pool leagues and were on the ropes from the start. Andy Scoffham, Tony Harvey, Tom King, & Nick Mcgrath put the London bar in full control by winning the first four singles and the latter paired up to win the first doubles match. At the interval, Nick Mcgrath gave a little pep talk to Tom king & co and reminded them that they still had to win the match “this is important and it’s better to keep the celebrations on ice until we win” he said. Serena’s, now trailing 0-5 had to do something and had to do it quick. Serena’s took the second doubles match followed by the next two singles and all of a sudden, they were back in it as the London bar wobbled. With the London bar leading 3-5 and still needing one more point to clinch victory, it was Nick Mcgrath “The Preacher” himself up next and he did not disappoint. Playing some cool shooting skills he managed to steer his team over the line and on to victory with the match ending 4-6 to the London bar. With Serena’s loss, it was the Tartan bars gain as they moved back to top spot with a strong performance against the ever improving Rockstar. Rockstar’s Juanfran Del Castillo put Iain Carmichael to the sword in the first game only to see his team collapse under pressure from a strong team. With the Tartan’s “Ryan express” Ryan Robinson banging balls

in for fun, it is hard to see this team losing with the quality they have in their team. They took the next seven matches to leave the Rockstar shell-shocked and beaten. The final result, 8-2 for the Tartan bar and back to the top of the league. After a shaky start, defending champions “The Grill House” have got their act together and have now won their last three games, including this narrow victory over the Yorkshire Pride A team. With the match tied at 4-4 and a draw looming, it was Bobby Morris & Philip Cordon who sealed the win for the Grill house taking the last two singles matches. This win moves them up to 4th in the league table, three points adrift of the leaders. Bobby’s bar entertained the Stretford Jukebox who were desperate to put things right after last week’s disastrous 10-0 whitewash. Leading

1-2 it was looking good for the away team but again, the wheels came off. Bobby’s bar won the match 7-3 which condemns the Stretford Jukebox to their 6th defeat of the season and they now sit precariously near the bottom. The last match of the week saw the London bar B team pile more misery on the Peppermill winning 8-2. The Peppermill sit at the bottom of the league table but know if they win their game in hand, it will lift them above the Stretford Jukebox and out of the wooden spoon area. Pistorius Found Guilty of Murder

Anthony Joshua faces Dillian Whyte, an opponent who defeated him in the amateurs, at the o2 Arena in London on 12 December.

A South African judge on Thursday found Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius guilty of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, overruling a previous manslaughter conviction.

Both fighters are unbeaten in the pro ranks, Joshua in 14 fights, Whyte in 16. Whyte, 27, defeated Joshua, 26, in an amateur bout in 2009. Joshua’s clash with Whyte is part of a huge night of action at The O2, with Chris Eubank Jr. and Spike O’Sullivan clashing in a final eliminator for the WBA World Middleweight title. Kevin Mitchell, Luke Campbell and Paulie Malignaggi will also fight on the undercard.

The judge said the matter will be referred to the trial court to consider an appropriate sentence. South Africa’s national prosecuting authority said it was waiting for the court in Pretoria to set a date. A retrial was not expected. Pistorius is currently out of prison under house arrest after spending a year of a five-year sentence in jail. Steenkamp was killed on Valentine’s Day in 2013 after Pistorius shot her through a bathroom door. He maintains he shot her because he thought she was an intruder. Prosecutors believe he became enraged after the couple quarreled. Judge Eric Leach said Thursday in the new ruling that Pistorius “never offered an acceptable explanation” for his actions. Leach and four other judges found that an earlier trial made errors in delivering a verdict of culpable homicide, which is broadly equivalent to manslaughter. In particular, the judge ruled that Judge Thokozile Masipa was wrong in applying dolus eventualis, or legal intention, when he decided to fire his gun. “The accused must have foreseen and therefore did foresee that whoever was behind that door might die,” he said.

cos letting all their players play and not just their strongest team,so fair play to them. Highlight of the night for foleys was a maximum 180 from Mike. In the other game Camping villamar proved too strong for cuba bar winning 10 - 0 for their best result of the campaign. Again credit to cuba bar for fielding a team when things are obviously not going well for them.

This week sees Hepburns travelling to Foleys, villamar at home to near rivals cocos and cuba facing another tough game with a visit to caspers. The table stands with Foleys on top with 19 points followed by Caspers with 11 and in joint third Hepburns and Villamar. Bringing up the rear Cocos is on 4 and Cuba on 3
