Dear Readers

I hope that the sun which arrived and warmed up last Sunday will appear this coming weekend as Benidorm celebrates “Carnival” on Saturday 14th February. As it is also Valentine's Day, why not get out and enjoy the carnival parades (there are separate ones for adults and children) followed by a fantastic meal?

Last week was filled with great sporting events and for me the opening match of the Six Nations was full of surprises – with an unexpected result as England (the underdogs) came back in the second half to secure victory over Wales. The weekend became even more exciting with two big premiership derby fixtures on the same day. There was a big upset in north London when Spurs continued their winning form to beat local rivals Arsenal 2-1. Unfortunately the Liverpool event was not so spectacular, and finished 0-0. The coming week has more premiership games, FA Cup ties for the weekend plus further top class action from the Six Nations. Don't forget to tune into Overseas FM on to 93.4 or 105.4 FM (depending on your location) or listen live via the website or on your mobile with the free download www.overseasfm.com. Listen to the most popular breakfast show in the Costa Blanca with Adam King and if you’re out and about and hear Overseas FM being played in any bar, cafe or shop, then send us a text and we will not only mention this “live on air”, but also enter you in to our holiday competition.

PRESS BRIEFING AT SATE OFFICE 3

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE...

A Weekly Buzz reporter will attend a media briefing on Thursday 12th February, and will have the opportunity to ask the Ambassador about his visit, as well as the issues that affect both British visitors and residents in Spain. Sarah-Jane Morris, Consul for Alicante, will also be attending.

National Police, and was opened last June to provide tourists with help and support. Figures released this week show that the office assisted 1,280 people, who had been unfortunately fallen victim to criminals whilst visiting Benidorm. There has been an ongoing campaign to move the location of the SATE office by “British Benidorm” – a small group of local business owners located in the Rincon end of Benidorm. They want the office situated closer to the many hotels and main area where most British visitors stay, and where most of the crimes are committed.

It has been said that a large number of crimes do not get reported, because of the location of the SATE office and also the National Police Station which is also situated in the Old Town. “British Benidorm” has been campaigning to the Mayor, Agustin Navarro, about a number of problems that are seriously damaging the British Tourist trade. Smaller crimes here in Spain go without punishment, and therefore provide little comfort for the victim. Thieves and pickpockets who are apprehended are let off with only a warning if the value of the theft is under 400€. To make matters worse, the threshold used to be 300€ and was increased recently.

Figures released showed that only 7% of reported crime during 2014 was from Spanish Nationals, and over 50% from British tourists.

With these statistics, the Town Hall should now be quizzed about their plans to reduce crime and the common problems that face the public every day. What is being done to protect people from the illegal activities of street crime, beggars and gangs of con-men who prey on the British – which is ultimately, hurting the tourist market and posing a daily threat to British residents?

BEST POUND EURO CONVERSION RATE IN 7 YEARS £1 = €1.3485

After a slight dip last week the Pound hit a 7 year high and people are hoping to see rates reach 1.35. The main reason for the rise is because the dollar is trading strongly against the Euro and the recent wage growth rises in the US has strengthened the Dollar even further, which means the Euro is also weaker against the Pound.

The number of un-reported crimes is estimated at five times higher than those handled by the SATE office.

The Bank of England is actively trying to control the value of the Pound, otherwise the Euro Zone will not be able to afford the exports and services from the UK, and the British economy could really suffer.

With the forthcoming election in May, these rates are likely to continue for a little longer, and taking advantage now can mean huge benefits in planning for the year ahead – knowing what your money can buy, especially when investing in property.

Talking to Michael, owner of the foreign currency firm “Euro Pound”, he told Weekly Buzz “The last time the rates were at a peak was back in 2004. We had people queuing out of the door and along the main aisle of the indoor market. Everyone wanted to get their money changed and whatever cash the British people had, they came in to exchange it for Euros.” Asking Michael what he thought of the current trend, he replied “we hope it will long continue, and benefit holiday makers and the thousands of retired ex-pats who get their pensions back in the UK”. So what does 2015 have to offer the Brits right now? Well of course cheaper holidays, and once you have exchanged your pounds to Euros, visiting Spain or being

a resident becomes even more affordable. In summary, the British are experiencing a significant difference in the cost of living in Spain compared to 7 years ago, and now is the time to go ahead and exchange money.

SNOW COVERED ROOF TOPS 4

NEWS

Last week, the low temperatures were perfect for snow to cover the mountains in some areas of Marina Baixa and Marina Alta. In 24 hours the temperature dropped by 12ยบC.

Mountains like Bernia, Puig Campana and Montgo plus villages such as Tarbena, Guadalest, Laguar Valley, Coll de Rates, Jalon Valley and others, were covered with a blanket of snow. The weather men expected more snowfall, but the wind changed and it was not as cold as predicted however the temperatures have remained low (about 0ยบC in the coast areas and -5ยบC in inland areas) and for now they will not go higher.

POLICE UNCOVER 36 EGYPTIAN ARTEFACTS IN VALENCIA A Europe wide crackdown on cultural property trafficking has led the Guardia Civil to recover 36 Egyptian artefacts valued at €300,000 at the Port of Valencia.

In a press conference at Madrid’s National Archaeology Museum, antiquarian Captain Javier Morales said the most valuable piece was the bust of Egyptian goddess Sekhmet – worth an estimated €100,000.

Late last year Operation ‘Hieratica’ reclaimed the haul from a shipping container from Alexandria. Five people were arrested in Spain – four Egyptians and a Spanish antiquarian – and two accomplices in Egypt.

Seized artefacts included four canopic jars, several statues of the god Osiris, some small boxes more than three hundred years old, as well as Sekhmet’s bust. The items – hidden in cheap vases – are believed to be loot from the ancient Egyptian Saqqara burial ground and ruins near Mit Rahina.

UNEMPLOYMENT GETS OFF TO WORSE START IN 2015 THAN LAST YEAR

21st Jan - 27th Jan

Registered unemployment in Spain rose last month, but it was the smallest increase for a January since 2007, the Labour Ministry said. There were 77,980 new claims, bringing the total unemployment figure to 4,525,691.

Over the past 7 years, jobless figures for January have risen by an average of 144,000 people. On a seasonally adjusted basis, January claims grew by 42,723. The jobless rate in December 2014 stood at 23.7%.

However, the economy shed 199,902 jobs last month, more than in January 2014, bringing Social Security numbers to 16,575,312. Work was lost in

5

all sectors, including hospitality, construction and manufacturing, but the labour market typically begins the year with a surge in job cuts following the end of the Christmas season.

Only three Spanish regions registered a drop in unemployment: Extremadura, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. Elsewhere jobless claims rose, especially in Andalusia and the Valencia region.

According to the National Statistics Institute, 2014 was the first year of job creation since the crisis began, as Spain added 434,000 new positions.

WOMEN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

On Friday 6th March at 4.30 pm, the Church of England in Albir, one of seven churches in the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy, will be celebrating the World Day of Prayer.

This year the service has been written by the women of the Bahamas, and a warm welcome awaits everyone (not just the ladies). The service is interdenominational and will conclude with refreshments with a Caribbean flavour!

The Church of England uses the premises of the Norwegian Seafarers Church on Carrer Mart, which can be reached from the centre of Albir. Continue up the hill towards Hotel Rober Palas, turn right at the hotel and go past the entrance. Carrer Mart is the next road on the left, and there is plenty of parking. %0- 0;4)51:)81)5 )996+1):165 &$ # 0)<- 68/)51@-, 15 +633)*68):165 =1:0 :0-7)8:4-5: 6. $768:9 6. 3.)9 ,-3 "1 :0- .189: )8+0) )51+8699 6/ they 6/ %0Every Sunday68at 9.45 hold -<-5: =133 :)2- 73)+- 65 $;5,)? -+-4*-8 :0 %0- a)51+8699 19 ) ,19+17315=1:0 ) service of Holy Communion, 365/ :8),1:165 15 ;867- =01+0 19 ,-<-36715/ 15 $7)15 followed : +65919:9 8;5515/ =1:0 by6.fellowship over?6;8 cof.;88? .81-5, =013- :1-, ): :0- =)19: =1:0 ) 3-), :6 :0- ,6/ fee. %069If 15:-8-9:-, you would15 7)8:1+17): like more 15/ +)5 8-/19:-8 .864 :6 )4 15 :0- 7)8215/ 36: 6. )86 ,3*18Chaplaincy %0- 31/0: information on3 the 06;9- +)8 7)82 *? 786<1,15/ ) 2136 6. 565 7-8190)*3- .66, %069=06 *815/ please visit the website 21369 )396 /-: ) : 9018: +644-468):15/ :0- -<-5: http://costablanca-anglican;815/ 8-/19:8):165 <-:-815)8? +0-+29 =133 *- 7-8.684-, chaplaincy.org %0-8- =133 *- 781@-9 .68 :0- :67 :08-- 15 *6:0 4)3- )5, .-4)3- +):-/681-9 )5, ) $631,)81:? =)8, =01+0 =133 *- /1<-5

The flamenco dancer Carmen Perez Castellon, known by her artistic name ‘Rociito’, passed away recently. She lived on Camping Cap-Blanch in Albir for over 20 years and had performed in every venue in the area during this time. In a simple ceremony, many friends remembered how she decided to stay in Albir after acting with her parents as a child, and becoming a singing and flamenco star on the best stages in America.

! ALFAZ DOG POUND UNDER INVESTIGATION !#

The Court in Benidorm has opened preliminary investigations into a kennel, following a complaint lodged by the local Partido Popular (PP) of Alfaz del Pi. The kennel was closed last November by the Town Hall after receiving several reports from Seprona (the unit of the Spanish Civil Guard responsible for nature conservation and management of the hunting and fishing industry) and the Council.

THE CINEMA FESTIVAL OF ALFAZ RECEIVES AWARD

Marilo Albiñana, Head of PP in Alfaz del Pi, has resigned her position due to “personal issues”. Most people know that the PP in Alfaz is already fragmented, but her decision to leave was prompted by a visit from Maite Huerta from Valencia. The attitude of Mrs. Huerta is provoking constant tension and arguments in (and outside) her own party.

Spokesman of PSOE, Toni Such, said: “Huerta has managed to deeply erode the name of her party in Alfaz del Pi due to her authoritarian attitude, unwillingness to listen or talk, much less to distribute power”.

NEW POSITIONS FOR THE MOORS AND CHRISTIANS 2015 Last Friday, The Altea Moors and Christians Association named the 2015 Kingdom and Lieutenancy at the ‘Mig Any’ (Half-year) celebrations. The Christian Queen will be Maica Botella from ‘Fila Els Cebers’ and the Moors King will be Gonzalo Muñoz from ‘Fila Cora d’Algar’. The lieutenants will be Amelia Mulet, from ‘Creuats d’Altea’ (on the Christian side) and Julia Mora from ‘Companya Sarrains’ (Moors). About a thousand people attended the ceremony at the Palau Altea. On the Saturday there was a procession in honour of ‘Sant Blai’, Altea’s patron saint. Traditional ‘Rollets de Sant Blai’ cakes were blessed and in the evening there was a dance in the ‘Plaza Filarmonica’ square.

POT LUCK

A resident called the police thinking there were robbers in the Partida Montemolar area of Altea. The Local Police and the Guardia Civil went to the location and stopped a French Audi car with two suspects inside. The Guardia Civil searched the surrounding area and found a Mercedes Benz vehicle with a flat tyre. On examining the car they found it to contain bags of hashish, with a total weight of 1,200 kilograms. The bags were still wet, so the officers

Media Markt will open a new 2,500 square metre shop in La Marina Shopping Centre before the summer. It will be the company’s 75th outlet in Spain and will create 70 new jobs. There are more than a hundred companies located in La Marina making it the most prime shopping location in the area and with great access from the N332 it means business is booming, unlike the Benidorm centre which has poor access. In the past, Finestrat invested money in the past to improve the access to their Shopping Centre and

was also sponsored by some of the companies located there, while Benidorm has still not improved any access they are still thinking about a project to create a new roundabout to address the problem at the Centre.

Carnival is one of the most exciting and popular events each year. Holiday makers come back year after year to be a part of the fantastic celebrations and parades. You will start to notice that it’s Carnival season when you start to spot school children walking to school in all sorts of odd looking clothes and props from dads tie to socks that don’t match, you may even catch a glimpse of some fake or painted on moustaches. As the week goes on the children will add another obscure item to their outfits each day it really is wonderful to see and always brings a smile to your face. Carnival is celebrated across the whole of Spain each year and always falls on the first Saturday before Ash Wednesday. When you mention Carnival most people will assume you are talking about the world famous festival in Rio de Janeiro in which two million people descend on the city for a whole week and there is a party on the streets every day, the celebrations date right back to 1823! Here on the Costa Blanca we don’t have quite so many people but we still have some fantastic parades that are popular with tourists and residents alike! Most towns have two parades one for the children and one for the adults. One of the most popular places to visit is Benidorm, they have two parades, the one for the children ’normally sets off around 11am down Calle Gambo which is the pedestrianized street in the old town, if you can see Specsavers then you are in the right place and you can follow the celebration into the Town Hall Square. Then the main event is the evening parade which starts right at the top of Calle Ruzafa

next to the Crystal Park hotel, the streets are packed with onlookers, both resident and holiday makers, you will see some fascinating costumes they really do not hold back. Be warned they do turn the volume all the way up so maybe some earplugs wouldn’t go amiss, the procession also leads everyone down to the Town Hall Square and many people will continue to party until the early hours and where better than Benidorm! So if you are staying nearby be prepared for the noise and much like every fiesta in Spain expect some fireworks to be set off nearby. Carnival doesn’t actually finish until Tuesday 4th March (End of Lent, unfortunatly theres not a party for 40 days and 40 nights), on this day they celebrate quite a bizarre but fascinating ritual which is called the “Entierro de la sardine” (Burial of the Sardine). This symbolises the beginning of Lent and we all know what that means…giving up something we enjoy for 40 days, for this final celebration before Lent in which most towns hold another parade in the evening and finish off with the traditional ritual, where the sardine is ceremoniously buried or more often cremated.

Benidorm

Benidorm will be celebrating the Carnival on Saturday the 14th February 2015 with a seperate children's and adult parade.

10:30 Children's Carnival Parade along Calle Gambo, Calle Puente and finishing in the Plaza SSMM los Reyes de España. 21:30 Adult Carnival Parade along Calle

Marte, Calle Ruzafa, Calle Herrerías and finishing in Plaza SSMM los Reyes de España.

Moraira

Starting at 11.00 in the morning on Saturday there will be a parade along Calles Almacenes, Playas, Porches, Mar, Castillo and Barranquet. On the Sunday the there will be another parade through the streets of Moraira at 12:00

important to assess this before you buy.

It really boils down to doing the research in your chosen area, in the streets around the property you like, in the nearest village or town and in summer and winter. Spain offers so much variety that there is somewhere for everyone, but the trick is finding the right location for you and your circumstances. Happy hunting!

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE25 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Don’t let the slow start to your week fool you into thinking there wont be much happening this week. There will. You just need to bide your time. While you’re waiting for life to kick off, balance your finances or work out where to save time and money. Be productive. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

If you feel others are making use of you or trying to pull the wool over your eyes, be it at home or at work, your argumentative side will quickly come to the boil and you’ll be ready to explode. Don’t spoil it all now. You’ve worked so hard to get here. Not long now.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Money matters are starting to improve and if you play your cards right, the financial stability you’ve yearned for could soon be in your grasp. Imagine! As you take a deeper look into yourself emotionally, you may not like what you see. There’s time to change.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

It may feel as though others are making more progress than you, but if you’d only stop comparing yourself to others, you’d soon realise their goals and yours are on totally opposite sides of the playing field. Try to boost your confidence. Be yourself and be charming. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Are your ambitions working the way you’d wished? Are plans of action going in the right direction or have they stalled? It may be time for an assessment of what you want and where you’re going, so deal with issues as they arise to get a clear picture of what can be salvaged.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

There’s a lot going on in your world this week, and for the most part it all seems quite positive, so that should lift your spirits. You’ll now manage to get through obstacles that in the past preventing you from moving forward. That must feel great. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Luck is on your side, but if you’re willing to pitch in and help it along, you’ll achieve more than you could have imagined. Fate is also on your side as you steam ahead into uncharted waters. It’s amazing what some self belief can do to your opinion of yourself.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

You’re starting to see yourself in a different light and its quite a learning curve for you. Personal relationships may cause you trouble when a partner becomes extra demanding, and you’ll need to gently, but firmly, tell them they have to wait their turn for attention. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

You’re surrounded by love and feel warm and safe wrapped in the supportive arms of loved ones. It’s this that spurs you on to bigger and better things. Minor upheaval may knock you off track mid week, but it’s a temporary glitch, so stay focused on future plans. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

It’s a much more laid back week where partners, friends and family all do what they can to make you feel at ease. It’s lovely to feel the warmth and support of others surrounding you, and you’re truly grateful for everything and everybody you have in your life. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

You’re so busy looking to the future where plans and schemes are concerned, that you’re missing what’s right in front of your nose. Strand still and smell the roses. You need to get a new perspective on where you’re going and how you’re getting there. It’s not a race. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

You’ll dig your heels in over an issue you feel very strongly about, but others will become increasingly frustrated with you, even though they grudgingly admire you for standing firm. Its time to broaden your horizons. Thought about holidays yet? It’s time to book. Think exotic.

Las Fallas de Valencia

Las Fallas is undoubtedly one of the most unique and crazy festivals in Spain. Then again, Spain is a country known for its unique and odd fiestas. What started as a feast day for St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, has evolved into a 5-day, multifaceted celebration involving fire. Valencia, a quiet city with a population of just over 1 million, swells to an estimated three million flame-loving revelers during Las Fallas celebrations.

Las Fallas literally means "the fires" in Valencian. The focus of the fiesta is the creation and destruction of ninots (“puppets” or “dolls”), which are huge cardboard, wood, paper-machè and plaster statues. The ninots are extremely lifelike and usually depict bawdy, satirical scenes and current events. A popular theme is poking fun at corrupt politicians and Spanish celebrities. The labor intensive ninots, often costing up to 66, 227€, are crafted by neighborhood organizations and take almost the entire year to construct. Many ninots are several stories tall and need to be moved into their final location of over 350 key intersections and parks around the city with the aid of cranes on the day of la plantà (the rising).

The ninots remain in place until March 19th, the day known as La Cremá (the burning). Starting in the early evening, young men with axes chop cleverly-hidden holes in the statues and stuff them with fireworks. The crowds start to chant, the streetlights are turned off, and all of the ninots are set on fire at exactly 12 a.m. (midnight). Over the years, the local bomberos (firemen) have devised unique ways to protect the town's buildings from being accidentally set on fire by the ninots: such as neatly covering storefronts with fireproof tarps. Each year, one of the ninots is spared from destruction by popular vote. This ninot is called the ninot

city. Spontaneous fireworks displays explode everywhere during the days leading up to La Crema, but the highlight is the daily mascletá which occurs in the Plaza Ayuntamiento at exactly 2pm. When the string-lined firecrackers are ignited, the thunderous, rythmitic sounds they make can be considered music as the sound intensifies in volume. Those firecrackers timed to fall to the ground literally shake the floor for next ten minutes, as the mascletá is more for auditive enjoyment than visual. Falles can be found in the Plaza del Pilar and the Plaza de la Merced, another near the Convento Jerusalén, and others on Almirante Cadarso, Reino de Valencia, Sueca and Cuba streets.

indultat (the pardoned puppet) and is exhibited in the local Museum of the Ninot along with the other favorites from years past. The origin of las Fallas is a bit murky, but most credit the fires as an evolution of pagan rituals that celebrated the onset of spring and the planting season. In the sixteenth century, Valencia used streetlights only during the longer nights of winter. The street lamps were hung on wooden structures, called parots, and as the days became longer the now-unneeded parots were ceremoniously burned on St. Joseph's Day. Even today the fiesta has retained its satirical and working-class roots, and the well-to-do and faint-of-heart of Valencia often ditch out of town during Las Fallas.

Besides the burning of the ninots, there is a myriad of other activities during the fiesta. During the day, you can enjoy an extensive roster of parades, paella contests and beauty pageants around the

QPR TO DRAW UP MANAGER SHORTLIST

QPR are drawing up a shortlist for the vacant manager’s job but no interviews have taken place yet, according to the British media. Harry Redknapp resigned from the post on February 3 as he requires knee surgery, with Chris Ramsey taking over on a caretaker basis. Ramsey’s first game in charge was Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton which saw the R’s concede in stoppage time.

He will again take charge for Tuesday’s trip to Sunderland and admitted at the pre-match media conference he would be interested in filling the position on a permanent basis.

But former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood, a friend of Ramsey’s after they worked together at White Hart Lane, remains hot favourite for the job.

The bookies have unanimously decided that Sherwood is the front runner for the position, the odds-on favourite can be backed as short as 1/14 across the market, but more widely 1/3.

Perhaps unsurprisingly current head of football operations at Loftus Road Les Ferdinand is in the running and second in pecking order. That said, Ferdinand remains a relative outsider at 5/1.

From then on usual suspects follow. Current QPR first-team coach and former England boss Glenn Hoddle is out at 7/1. Current Derby County boss Steve McClaren , who was very recently linked to vacant posts at both West Brom and Crystal Palace, is out at 14/1.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is out of work after losing his job at Championship side Cardiff offers value if QPR opt for a cheap alternative, the Norwegian can be backed at 16/1. For the optimistic Hoops fans Rafa Benitez has been inserted at 20/1, USA boss Jurgen Klinsmann is out at 25s followed by Schalke's Roberto Di Matteo at 33/1.

ALFAZ FANTASY SPONSORED BY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There were Three 4th Round F.A. Cup Replays and a full Premier League at the Weekend which contributed to this Week's Alfaz Fantasy League,30 goals,5 clean sheets,59 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Manchester United's full back Luke Shaw. I'll never understand some of these Players,United had just equalized and with just seconds to go while on a yellow card Shaw makes a ridiculous challenge which makes it easy for my favourite Referee Mark Clattenburg(not ) to send him off. Shaw is the 4th Manchester United Player to be dismissed this Season. At the top of the Alfaz Fantasy League Dennis's Team The Potters remain in pole position 40 points infront of Lesley's Law's Lads who this week swapped places with Keith's Team Max & Paddy. Lenny's Spreaders moved back in contention and are back in 4th place just ahead of Dean's Globe Trotters. At the other end of the scale Danny's Team Boro Man Dan slipped further behind Les's Team Have Not Got a Clue the gap now being 9 points. In our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction the average score was only 6 points mainly because a lot of goals scored this Weekend were by Players who were not selected by Fantasy League Managers. Keith's Max & Paddy seized the chance to extend their lead at the top to 58 points over Vince's Bars a Loner who this Week failed to score. The League Leaders The Potters scored 24 points in this Section which moved them up 7 places to 3rd courtesy of Spurs in form Striker Harry Kane who scored 10 points this Week in the Main League as well as the Boot League.Big Manchester United Fan Dave Morris saw his Team snatch a draw at West Ham but it didn't help his Fantasy Team Casa Stretford Ender get off the bottom spot who are now 11 points behind Colin's Bentley Boys. Lesley's Team Law's Lads are not messing about at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section. This Week they stretched their advantage to 62 points over Sharon's Shaztastic which is biggest margin in any of our Divisions.Down at the foot of the Table Gillian's Gil's Kippax have been stuck at the bottom for the last 4 Weeks since replacing Winnie's Le Hombre Rioja. At the

moment they are 31 points adrift of Kate's Mixed Bunch. After a couple of Weeks rest Harley's Ginger Ninja have moved back to the Summit of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League by taking a very narrow 3 point lead over Dog Dale.Sponge Bob XI are in 3rd place followed by Billy's How's Ya Father. This Division is turning out to be the most competitive for ages. Down in the Basement Adam's Team What's the Point are still losing ground on Calum's Ree's Red Devils the distance now 12 points. Two Teams are going into the Hat for our Monthly Premier Imports Draw for a case of fine Wine and they are Beryl's Team Wozabby who bagged this Week's top score of 38 points and our lowest scoring Team which was Jack's Team Jack's Going to Walk It who only scored a minus 1. Manager of the Month for February is being kindly sponsored by Steve & Tracy at AMICS Bistro in Albir who provide superb food on an excellent Sunny Terrace situated next to where the Albir Sunday Market is. With only 1 Week gone Beryl's Wazabby lead young Marcus's Salford Sausages by 1 point then comes 5 Teams all in joint 3rd place and they are Ginger Ninja,Robinho,Pot Luckers,Harry's Heroes and Wish it was Hibs. The Fastest Moving Team this Week was Heidi's side Pot Luckers who moved up 20 places to No 137 which has earned Heidi a super Breakfast for 2 at Rafters sponsored by Kate. Well after the 3 F.A.Cup Replays have taken place Everton Tom's Team Limoneros Caramelo have held on to the top spot and lead Big Tony by 4 points in our F.A.Cup League. Steve's Team Salford Side are in 3rd place 1 point ahead of 2 Teams Tom's Benidorm Trotters and Marcus's Salford Sausages.Down at the bottom Sue & Alison's Team Mancastle United are 2 points adrift of Richard's Pocket Rockets.Things could change this week with the 5th Round taking place. With a full Premier League taking place during the week and F.A.Cup Ties at the Weekend it's important to clock on how your Team is performing by visiting our website which is www.alfazffl.com or if you can't access a computer why not call into Hepburns or the Local in Albir for all the latest News and Results.

SCOTLAND FEAR NO ONE

Dougie Fife says Scotland are confident they have the ability to defeat Wales at Murrayfield on Sunday. Fife came off the bench on Saturday in Paris and scored a try as the Scots performed creditably in the15-8 loss to France in their opening match of the championship. And the Edinburgh wing says the squad are determined to open their account this weekend against Wales, who were also beaten in their first match.

“We watched the Wales-England game on Friday,” said Fife. “It looked very physical and the breakdown was more competitive than it has been in the last few Six Nations, so that will be a big part of the match next week. "Wales will be disappointed and will be looking for a backlash, but so will we. We respect every side in this tournament but we don't fear

NORTH WAS KO

Wales wing George North was knocked out during the Six Nations defeat to England, WRU medical officials have confirmed. The Welsh team's national medical manager has admitted that had they seen the second-half collision with Richard Hibbard – either live or on a television replay – they would have removed him from the match. North has started his returnto-play protocol after suffering two blows to the head during the game at the Millennium Stadium.

any team. We have the ability to beat anyone in this competition.

"It was very disappointing, the way we didn't get a result on Saturday. We felt we could have won it and it could have gone either way in the end. "We definitely had the belief that we could come to Paris and win. We had a great autumn and thought rolling into this Six Nations we would be starting this campaign off in a good place.

The wing took an accidental boot to the head from England lock Dave Attwood in the first half, and he was temporarily replaced by Liam Williams while he underwent mandatory concussion assessment. North subsequently returned to the field, but he then clashed heads with team-mate Hibbard during the second half in what appeared to be a worse incident, and which attracted attention from rugby union's global governing body World Rugby.North subsequently returned to the field, but he then

SCHMIDT CALLS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt admits the defending Six Nations champions must up the ante following their 26-3 triumph over Italy at Rome's Stadio Olimpico. The visitors were in command throughout, but were made to wait until the hour for their first try of the match. Referee Pascal Gauzere tired of Italy's infractions and sin-binned hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini and within seconds, Ireland turned a 12-3 lead on penalties into 17-3 advantage as Conor Murray dotted down. Ireland were assured victory, but for good measure, space opened for last-minute starter Tommy O'Donnell to run in a second try in two minutes.

O'Donnell started only because flanker Sean O'Brien, set to play his first Test in 15 months after two shoulder reconstructions, injured his hamstring in the warm-up, although Schmidt is "quietly confident" O'Brien will pass scans in Dublin.

"It was a slog, but I don't know if it was that frustrating,” Ireland full-back Rob Kearney said. “Any time you come to Rome that's exactly what you're expecting a slog.

"We knew that if we just kept chipping away and trying to build some phases that eventually we would break them down." Schmidt suggested Ireland's display was "between 30 and 40 per cent off" what England showed in a 21-16 win over Wales in Cardiff on Friday.

clashed heads with team-mate Hibbard during the second half in what appeared to be a worse incident, and which attracted attention from rugby union's global governing body World Rugby.

"In the second incident, regrettably I was unsighted at that moment. The other pitch-side medic on the far side of the pitch was also unsighted.

"All I saw was George North getting up off his knees. When I arrived at the scene, as it were, he was completely lucid and was conversing spontaneously with me. I undertook some on-pitch evaluations, and that point I deemed him fit to continue.

"Regrettably, we didn't get a chance to see the incident, and had I been given that opportunity, there is no doubt that he would have been removed from the field of play.

“There is no pitch-side replays available currently, and the independent matchday doctor was unable also to aid us in that process.

MCLAREN AND HONDA MURRAY “NO ISSUE WITH DJOKOVIC READY FOR CHALLENGE

Ron Dennis has no doubts that the reformed McLaren-Honda partnership will overcome the “huge” challenge they face in the build-up to the new season and eventually go on to win World Championship again. Following a problematic two-day test with the Japanese manufacturer’s new power unit in an interim car at the end of last year, McLaren encountered more teething trouble with the all-new MP4-30 at last week’s opening winter test in Jerez. Across four days in southern Spain, the car was on track for just 79 laps – over 400 laps fewer than world champions Mercedes’ W06, for instance. However, with Honda returning to F1 with a season of the sport’s new turbo era having already been completed, Dennis says both

parties are aware of the task ahead and ready to carry the burden of expectation.

“Honda is a phenomenally committed company and the challenge we face together as we approach the 2015 season is just huge,” the McLaren chairman said. “Our competitors have had one year’s head start, which again amplifies the challenge. The rules and regulations have never been so complex for the power units. “As we approach this first Grand Prix, the expectation becomes more intensive. The pressure from our fans, our drivers, our sponsors, the media gets more and more intense – but we are ready for the challenge.”

Andy Murray says Novak Djokovic has no need to explain himself after their controversial Australian Open final. Djokovic struggled through to an eighth Grand Slam title in Melbourne last week - at one point looking beaten physically but pulling through for a four-set victory at the expense of a furious Murray, who came close to accusing him of theatrics on court.

But Murray insists that he does not hold anything against Djokovic for the way he acted on court. "Everything has been made out to be much bigger than what is was," said the world No 4, who will be back in action in Rotterdam on Wednesday. "That happens all the time these days. In reality, you can go through periods of being very

tired, then get better. You can get a second wind. "As the finishing line gets closer, you can feel better. If Novak feels he has something to explain, I'd be pleased to speak with him - but I don't feel he really needs to explain anything."

Murray is top seed in Rotterdam, and he opens his campaign against French qualifier Nicolas Mahut on Wednesday. Canadian Vasek Pospisil or Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber await in the second round, with Frenchman Gilles Simon seeded to meet him in the quarterfinals. Third seed Tomas Berych, the defending champion, is potentially his semi-final opponent. Milos Raonic is the second seed, with Stan Wawrinka, the fourth seed, and fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov his main challengers in the bottom half of the draw.

ARSENE WENGER CONFUSED OVER FFP DESPITE DEGREE

11th Feb - 17th Feb

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits even he has been left perplexed by Financial Fair Play regulations despite holding a degree in economics. Big-spenders Manchester City and Paris St Germain were both given heavy fines by UEFA last year after investing huge sums of money on players in recent seasons.

England have started their 2015 Six Nations campaign with a famous 21-16 victory over Wales at the Millennium Stadium last Friday.

England fought back from 10-0 down after nine minutes to beat Wales 21-16 in the opening game of the Six Nations, avenging a painful defeat to its fiercest rival on its last trip to the Millennium Stadium.

Despite being ordered to pay £49m by European football’s governing body, City made the biggest outlay by any English side in the January Transfer Window, signing £28m Wilifred Bony from Swansea.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side were also forced to reduce their Champions League squad from 25 players to 21, resulting in Stefan Jovetic becoming unavailable for European competition.

Financial Fair Play as that notion has changed," said Wenger. "Is it just your income created by the gates? Is it the gates and commercial? Is it only the gates and the television? Is it naming rights as well? "It is not clear to people what Financial Fair Play means, the rules are very complicated. "We are a popular sport, so you want to clear and simple rules for everybody to understand. If I ask 10 people in the street today (what it means) and then if you ask me, and I am in the job, I don't have a clear idea anymore of what it means."

Arsenal continue to move forwards from a solid financial base which is built around the revenue generated from their 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium rather than the deep pockets of American owner Stan Kroenke. Wenger said: "The Financial Fair Play rules

Wenger has always supported moves to regulate spending in football but the Frenchman, who studied Politics and Economics at the University of Strasbourg, is confused by what UEFA have set out. "It depends what you call

have to be respected by everybody and if one club respected always the Financial Fair Play, and you can underline always, it is Arsenal, then we do not have to talk about that."
