Dear Readers

Well I must say we have seen in the new month with a fantastic few days – weather-wise. Goodbye to February and the daily dilemma of not knowing what to wear to go out. This week we have seen temperatures in the middle 20's across the coast, with loads of sunshine. The forecast is a little down, but hey it's March and we know that spring is here, with warmer months around the corner.

March is a month of celebrations for the Spanish and the Irish – and because the Brits love a party, we can all join in. For the Valencian region, the Spanish celebrate "Fallas" from the 15th to the 19th. Expect many street parties and parades with giant statues, which normally characterise local dignitaries.

St Patrick's Day (the 17th) falls on a Tuesday and is also a very popular affair. Brits flock to Benidorm and the area is given over to more street events, with visitors enjoying a day of fancy dress partying – mostly in “green”.

Father's Day in Spain is celebrated on the 19th (the last day of the “Fallas”). This is a public holiday and the giant statues are ceremoniously set on fire to mark the end of the fiesta. For the British living here, Mother’s Day in the UK is on the 15th of March, so enjoy the day, but don’t forget to send flowers and cards back home in plenty of time...

For sports lovers, the Cheltenham Festival starts on the 10th March (until the 13th) followed by another weekend of fantastic 6 Nations rugby. With last year’s winners, Ireland, leading the field, but with Wales to face next (who are in joint second place with England), it’s still anyone's title… with all to play for.

I am pleased to hear that so many local bars, shops and businesses have now tuned into Overseas FM on 93.4 (or 105.4 FM, depending or the area). You can also listen live via the website, or on your mobile phone with the free app download from www.overseasfm.com. Hear the latest news from the UK and Spain, as well as great music from the decades.

For business owners with plans to move their business ahead this spring, now is the time to talk to us. We can provide a marketing proposal that combines local newspaper and radio advertising, together with an online presence – getting the public to notice you.

THE WEEKLY BUZZ EXPAND THEIR OPERATION

From Front Page...Asking director/owner Marco

what was behind the success of the recent expansion he replied: “We have worked extremely hard as a team to provide local businesses with an advertising solution that actually works. So many people have been put off spending hard earned cash on worthless advertising that hasn't worked for them, and with the Weekly Buzz I promise my customers that we will prove we are different.”

A number of high profile and successful businesses in the area have awarded advertising contracts to The Weekly Buzz recently, including: Telitec Connections SL; Specsavers Stores in Benidorm, Javea and Calpe; Beniconnect Travel SLU; Terra Natura SA; PMR Rentals; Real Homes; Sol Albir; Sotheby's; Benidorm Palace; Flash Hotel; Med Playa Hotels. Marco said “The response to our 2015 campaign has been incredible, with so many new customers. Plus we have maintained our long standing clients who we have worked with for many years. We are able to provide our advertisers with a concentrated distribution for our weekly newspaper, covering all of the areas that I call the British “HOT SPOTS” in the North Costa Blanca, those with a high population of British ex-pats and visitors. “Now with over double the number of copies available each week, my target is to see every potential reader with a copy of the Weekly Buzz.

“We opened our local news desk at the Benidorm Indoor Market, which immediately gave us the interaction with local owners and the general public – who visit us from all areas, and as far away as Denia and Javea. Further local offices are planned for this year, together with the recruitment of more staff.

“My individual thanks go to my long-term clients, of whom there are so many, but I would like to mention a few from the extensive list of local businesses who trust us to provide their advertising: Yorkshire Pride Pubs Benidorm; Rays II Chippy; Rock and Roll House Benidorm; Monroes Restaurants; The Pig n Whistle; The Rich Bitch Show Bar.

“The addition of our partnership with Overseas FM is the icing on the cake for us, making our presence even stronger with the reach of our media products “on air” and in all local ICELAND stores.

“We are thinking ahead all the time, and our next planned expansion Listen N ! 93.4fm/10o5w .4fm is to our online services – which will be ready to launch to the public later this month. Our web site (www.vistacostablanca.com) already has thousands of weekly readers, plus it is one of the places to access the online version of the Weekly Buzz Newspaper – for those people who are unable get out to pick up a printed copy”.

SPAIN OUTSTRIPS FRANCE AND ITALY IN WINE EXPORTS

Spain is the biggest exporter of wine in the world, but why are exports mainly in bulk, rather than bottled? Spain is a relative newcomer on the international circuit, compared to the French and Italians, yet it has beaten records to become the biggest wine exporter in the world. According to data published on February 23rd by Spanish wine market observatory (Obervatorio Espaùol de los Mercados del Vino – OEM) Spanish wine exports reached 22.8 million hectoliters in 2014, a

22.3 percent rise on 2013. But while the volume of sales has increased, profits have fallen 2.2 percent since 2013. According to the latest data, France is now the biggest buyer of Spanish wines; guzzling 5.8 million hectoliters in 2014, a 40 percent rise on the previous year, followed by Germany, Portugal and Russia. But if Spain is the biggest exporter of wine

in the world, why have profits fallen? The answer may lie in the fact that the majority of wine exported from Spain, 55 percent, is sold in bulk, i.e. not bottled. Spain, home to the biggest vineyards in the world, has always sold in bulk to its neighbours but profits are falling - the latest figures reveal that in 2014 the average price was 40 cents per litre, compared to 60 cents the year before.

It is often more economic for France to export wine in bulk from Spain and then label it, rather than growing the grapes and making the wine themselves. pany she works only sells bottled wine with declared Spanish origin.

Another important factor in why Spanish wines are so cheap compared to their competitors, according to Chaglasyan, is that Spain opened up to the international market relatively late.

BENISSA’S KYLE SMITH TAKES FOURTH IN OZ

The 23 year old British driver linked to the town of Benissa for many years, Kyle Smith, was born in Huddersfield and moved to Spain when he was 6. He was fourth in the first race of the 2015 Supersport World Championship season. He missed out on a podium finish by 0.032s at Australia’s Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Jules Cluzel won the race. Smith was in control during the first part of the race and was fighting to be on the podium all the time but he had to be careful to preserve the rear tire on his Honda CBR600RR while fighting for a third place against the driver Gino Rea, who could only pass him at the finishing line. Kyle explained to the press: “I had a very good start and two riders passed me while I was preserving

my rear tire. Then they slightly moved away due to the better conditions of their tires and it was a very tight finish with Gino hitting my bike but I will make sure it does not happen in following races”. Next race will be on 22nd March at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand.

VILLA ROMANA RECEIVES 650 VISITORS IN FEBRUARY

The outdoor ‘Villa Romana’ in Albir had 650 visitors during February. It is a pioneer museum which uses 3D technology and has become one of the most visited places in the campaign: ‘We love Sundays Albir’.

The site (which has been dated between IV and VII A.D.) had been forgotten for over 25 years, but the museum ‘Villa Romana’ opened in 2011 after renewed archaeological works.

The museum’s new interactive guide is an iPad app which allows the “virtual” visualization of the thermal baths that were once there.

Visiting times are Tuesdays to Fridays from 10AM-1PM, and Saturdays, Sundays and red days, from 10AM-2PM.

ALBIR CHURCH OF ENGLAND CONGREGATION CURRY FOR CASH !

The money raised will be given to ‘Anemona Marina Baixa’, a self-help group for women with breast cancer. Jose Antonio Rubio, the festival’s musical director, said: “A very special atmosphere was created during the weekend, with a great audience asking

for more, and over 300 singers and musicians from different cities and cultures coming together to support those affected by breast cancer”. During the ‘Coral Polifonica L’Alfas Canta’, the Mayor of Alfaz de Pi, Vicente Arques, was named honorary president and honorary member accolade went to Pascual Albiñana, one of the most appreciated singers in the choir. This charity event was also supported by the Alfaz del Pi Culture and Social Welfare Departments.

LIGHTING UPGRADES

The Provincial Government of Alicante has launched an Extraordinary Infrastructure Investment Plan which will be applied in Altea and La Nucia. These two towns are planning to save energy by updating public lightning and air conditioning.

In Altea, the Town Hall will use its subsidy of around €142,000 to improve the Town Hall and the ‘Casa de Cultura’ lightning systems, by replacing them with LED lights and will also change the air conditioning system within the ‘Casa de Cultura’. The Mayor of Altea, Miguel Ortiz, explained that with this investment Altea will be one of the most commit-

ted towns – with energy savings and zero emissions.

The Town Hall in La Nucia will use the subsidy of almost €240,000 to install new public lights. A total of 1,113 streetlights in 11 urbanizations (La Torre, Arcos Este, El Valle, P a t r a x , Entrepinos, Montebello, B a r r a n c o Hondo, La Venta del Aire, Convent de les M o n g e s ,

ALTEA ADOPTS OBAMA’S TAX TRANSPARENCY

The Town Hall of Altea has recently introduced an application on its website, in order to show the citizens what their tax payments are used for. It is a ‘Calculadora de Impuestos’ (Taxes Calculator) which ranks Altea as the first town in the Valencian Region, and one of the first in Spain offering this service. A banner in Altea’s website (www.altea.es) links to the app, which shows how the money is distributed within the budgets. It considers the yearly fees paid in IBI taxes, water payments,

garbage taxes and IVTM taxes. The aim is to let all residents know the amount of tax that is designated to Social Services, Local Police, Urban Planning, Infrastructures, Education, Culture, Sports, etc., in the clearest and easiest way with just one click of their mouse. This Tax Calculator is also designed to be used through mobile devices, like mobile phones or tablets by just visiting the link (without installing any app).

Benidorm Bahia and Panorama) will be updated with adjustable lamps and equipment, in order to improve energy efficiency. The streetlight structures will remain, but the lamps and electronic devices will be

DOLPHIN DIES AFTER CAUGHT IN LONG-LINE IN BENIDORM

The veterinaries from the Recovery Area at Valencia Oceanografic and Mundomar tried for over an hour to save an adult female common dolphin, which was found last Sunday caught in an illegal ‘long-line’ at Peacock Island in Benidorm. However the poor condition of the animal made it impossible, and the dolphin died just after 3 pm. The beautiful animal was found at 10 am by a family in a boat, who quickly alerted a group of divers from Alicante’s Club Gised. They cut the line and freed the female dolphin, but as the animal was too exhausted to swim away, the divers decided to take it to the harbour. Mundomar veterinaries were first on the scene and adminis-

tered painkillers. When Oceanografic vets arrived they tried to stabilize the dolphin using water mixed with serum and drugs, curing some wounds, removing the bait and implementing a drip. Unfortunately, one and a half hours later the animal’s condition deteriorated and the vets decided to end its suffering. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

6 ARRESTED FOR HOLIDAY SCAM

In June 2014, the Police Station in Benidorm started an investigation after several people reported they had been scammed while renting a holiday apartment through a website. They paid a reservation fee of €800 and once they arrived at the apartment address, they found it did not exist. The police tracked bank accounts in Ecuadorian and between 19 and

the money to several Castellon, and four Colombian people, 27 years old, were

arrested. They were being used as ‘mules’, receiving the money in order to transfer it later, in exchange for a percentage.

The investigation culminated in the arrest of two further Colombian men (aged 19 and 22) who were using the bank accounts to avoid any direct connection with the scam. The operation was carried out by officers from Benidorm Local Police Station and Castellon Provincial Police Station.

Jose Luis Crespo, veterinary from Oceanografic, explained that “common and bottlenose dolphins normally swim in deep water so when they come close to the coast line they are usually ill and this is why most of them end up dying. The percentage of marine mammals which are able to recover is only 1%, whereas with turtles (for example) it is around 90%”. He and Carlos Barros, vet from Mundomar, explained that it is not normal for a dolphin to steal food from a long-line, which confirms that the animal was already ill before being caught.

NO POLICE ON BENIDORM BEACHES 4th March - 10th March

The SPPLB (the Professional Union of Local Police and Fire) and the Town Hall are in disagreement about the hiring of 10 temporary police officers to strengthen surveillance on Costa Blanca beaches.

and the Town Hall says everything is according to the law. While the Union and the Town Hall are still at loggerheads, Marcet has already predicted that with so many setbacks the process will be delayed and it is possible that new agents will not be on the beaches at Easter, as needed. According to SPPLB, this delay is due to the fact that the Town Hall failed to initiate the selection process in October or November last year.

The Head of Public Safety Department, Jose Marcet, added: “the process last year was approved by the Regional Valencian Government and was also supported by the Deputy Mayor of Alicante. Francisco Angel Gonzalez, the general secretary of SPPLB, replied that the Valencian Government only gave approval because of the urgency of the situation and certain legal conditions. One of the most urgent subjects concerning The Mayor of Teulada-Moraira, Antoni Joan Bertomeu, admitted that water supply Moraira-Teulada is the is not guaranteed and he is committed to creating a ‘water bank’ – which allows implementation of the ‘Plan towns with excess water to Director de Aguas provide towns with a shortResiduales’ (Master Plan fall. for Wastewater). Bertomeu is sure there will be a water shortage this summer and the Town Hall is negotiating with Javea to get a supply from its desalination plant. Other towns such as Benissa and Poble Nou de Benitatxell are also participating in these negotiations.

Antoni Joan Bertomeu (in the middle) along with representatives of his party

The Town Hall is studying the way to save €17 Million which is needed to create new sewers and upgrade the existing ones in order to end the reality of a town in which more than half of the homes have no sewage system.

MARINA SALUD HARDEST YEAR

On February 11th the Mayor of Javea, Jose Chulvi, asked ‘Marina Salud’ (the private company in charge of the health management in ‘La Marina’ area) to open an extra health centre during this summer to avoid the health collapse of previous years. However, three weeks later Marina Salud has not even replied to him. ‘Marina Salud’ representatives seem to be “sticking to their guns” even knowing that this could be their last year in charge of health in the area because of the regional elections in May. All the political parties, who want an end to 20 years of Partido Popular (PP) rule, have said that if any of them (PSOE, Compromis, Esquerra Unida or Podemos) win the elections; they will cancel the private health administration, which is not working well in this area. It will not be easy to cancel the contract with ‘Marina Salud’ which does not end until 2023. It will be a long and expensive process, but the policy of saving money to make more profits for ‘Marina Salud’ could be used against them. This policy might be acceptable in a private sector, but not in health.

There have been many mistakes over the past six years, and the outcomes could have been very dangerous: overcrowded emergency departments, patients who are sent home in a hurry, closed clinics in summer due to doctors’ holidays, bed closures, negligence with fatal consequences, health centres almost closed for lack of locums. There was also the chaotic case in Denia when the Public Health Department had to force ‘Marina Salud’ to send patients to ‘La Pedrera’ to be hospitalized, when the company was going to send them home.

STAB AT DAD Officers of the Guardia Civil and Local Police arrested a man after he stabbed his father in law last week at an Electronic Workshop in Javea owned by the victim. The man was bleeding heavily and was rushed to the Denia Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The man ran out of the store asking for help and the residents of the Thiviers. neighbourhood called the police who arrested the attacker while he was entering his car. The Guardia Civil stopped the traffic and sealed the perimeter.

At the end of 2014 Marina Salud wanted to send this really ill 88-year-old lady home instead of to ‘La Pedrera’ Hospital

The Father in law was rushed into Denia Hospital

NEW LICENCE CHANGES DOES IT AFFECT US?? 4th March - 10th March

We have over the last few weeks read many reports about new laws for changing our driving licenses to a Spanish one. Often reports have been conflicting and confusing. Depending on the newspaper you read or the website you check, everyone has a different theory on the new law and whether there is a new law at all.

We spoke to PMR Property Management & Rental and asked their advice on this matter and we received very sound advice. Lisa Turner, Director of PMR based in Alfaz del Pi would recommend anyone who is a Resident in Spain to change their Licence for ease of identification and communication with the Authorities and peace of mind. Lisa gave a scenario that if a UK Licence were to be lost and you are Resident in Spain, you would not easily be able to get a replacement UK Licence from DVLA because you no longer have a permanent UK address. This could be problematic as you are always required to have your Licence with you while driving here and trying to explain your replacement is coming via your best friend’s sister could cause you more problems with the Police if you are stopped and found not to be carrying one. If the same were to happen and you lost your Spanish Licence, this can easily be replaced

because you reside here. The Police cannot enforce their penalty points system if your Licence is not Spanish and as we all know, the laws can often be misunderstood or misconstrued even by the authorities themselves. It is a legal requirement in the UK to change your non British Licence within a certain time frame so we would recommend you apply the same rules while residing here in Spain and carry a Spanish Licence. You can easily change your Licence using the “One Stop Shop” services at PMR. Contact them on 966260877 or email info@pmrspain.com or you can visit their offices which are open from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Friday.

wE25 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

If you stay focused and dedicated to the task at hand, and go all out to win by sticking to the road ahead and not being distracted by anything or anyone. There’s no telling how successful you will be, but I would say, very! You’re making quite a name for yourself. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Old routines no longer have the same appeal, so you’ll strive to make sweeping changes as you work to inject some variety into your busy day to day life. Your magnetic personality draws others to you, so enlist them to help you make these changes happen quickly. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Mercury is in a great position to push you forward at work, so make sure you’re in everyone’s line of vision and that you keep a high profile. It wont be long before you’re singled out for some special treatment. Career developments are on a firm footing. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Work out the best way to make new ideas work for you. Sounds simple doesn’t it, but the reality may be a bit different. Try to get a break from your daily routines as this may help you clear your head. Focus on one issue at a time and do it beginning, middle, end. Done!

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Don’t be too quick to offer your point of view at work, especially if you know it will clash with someone else’s. You’ve been making slow and steady progress recently, so don’t mess it up with a brash comment. Tact and diplomacy go a long way this week. Use them.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Although rules and regulations play a big part in your working life, you’re not above adding a few of your own, if you think someone doesn’t know how the land lies, and would work more productively to your way of doing things. You might be right. Go for it. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

If someone from overseas that you haven’t been in touch with for ages contacts you and asks you to go visit them, read between the lines and start saving. Don’t tie yourself up with tedious tasks. It will drive you crazy. You’ll talk the hind legs off a donkey tonight

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Although life as you know it is moving along and a steady pace, its not very exciting. Just before you start looking for ways to spice it up remember its nice to go at a slower pace sometimes, as your stress levels must be nearly at zero for a change. Chill. Relax.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

The spotlight is on love and romance this week, and although things are jogging along nicely, it may be time to take a deeper look into what makes you tick to see if improvements can be made. You’re making less mistakes these days so success in love is yours for the taking.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

To get the most out of today, you need to be properly prepared. Get rid of anything or anyone who holds you back and jettison that old emotional baggage you’ve been carrying on your back for years. You need to have a cleaner clearer path to advance the way you’d like.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Family matters and lively and rewarding this week, but don’t tempt fate by introducing financial matters into the debating circle. You could be making a rod for your own back. Don’t take anything or anyone for granted, and if you’re travelling at the weekend, double check your itinerary.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

Try not to force your opinions on others and avoid thinking you know everything. It’s starting to really grate on their nerves. This over confident Pisces has taken a lot of people by surprise, so maybe tone it down a bit until everyone gets used to the new you.

be welcome. Really, though, it works very well with the C450’s impressively tied down and very consistent feeling front end. The gearbox is swift and obedient, if lacking the absolute incisiveness of dualclutch units and Jaguar’s eight-speed auto. What about that all-wheel-drive chassis? It’s very, very good. Our test route flowed up into the Portuguese hills over some pretty challenging terrain, and the C450 delivered a brilliant balance of composure and engagement. The front end grips hard, and when you get on the throttle you can really feel the rear bias pushing you through the corner. In some ways it’s actually more satisfying than the C63, because you can deploy most of the power most of the time. It’d be fascinating to compare lap times on a wet circuit.

In Comfort mode the chassis feels very, well, comfortable, with the obvious tradeoffs in absolute handling finesse. Perhaps Sport Plus will feel like overkill in the UK, but on these test roads it worked brilliantly: excellent body control, meatier steering, telepathic gearbox logic and that

more exciting soundtrack.

And all – on these roads at least – without completely destroying the ride quality.

Verdict The C450 AMG neatly fills a fairly yawning gap between the comfort of mainstream C-class models and the outlandish excesses of the C63. The V6 engine, gearbox, steering and all-wheel-drive chassis make this car a great drive in all conditions, with little apparent trade-off in comfort compared with lesser models. It’s a compelling alternative to the Audi S4, though the new rear-wheel-drive Jaguar XE 3.0 S remains a dynamic benchmark – and an all-wheel-drive XE should hit the UK market at a similar time to the Merc.

I drove the C450 only in saloon body style, but the idea of a car this well-rounded in everything-but-the-kitchen-sink estate guise could be a dream combination.

However, the appearance of the rash is not always typical and your Doctor may need to take skin scrapings for examination to confirm diagnosis. The rash may cause only mild discomfort but for some people may be very irritating and itchy. Ringworm is an infectious disease and may be passed directly from person to person by direct skin contact. Sharing towels etc with an infected person can also spread the infection. Contact with an infected animal can also cause ringworm. If you suspect that your pet may be infected, see a Vet before you start itching!!

Fungus also survives in soil and can live on surfaces such as doors that have been touched by an infected person.

Example of person with ringworm

Ringworm can be easily treated with antifungal creams. Sometimes a steroid cream may also be needed to control itching and inflammation .Other forms of ringworm such as that of the scalp normally require treatment with antifungal tablets as cream alone may not clear the infection. Always check with a Doctor before using antifungal preparations as some groups of people such as those with existing illnesses or taking certain medications that interact with antifungals, should not use them. If you have symptoms of Ringworm, see your family Doctor.

HELPING THE WORLD TO SEE

Specsavers Opticas launches national campaign to collect glasses for Lions Clubs International 16th February 2015 - Specsavers Opticas announces the start of a campaign to collect unwanted glasses to present to the Lions Clubs at the beginning of May and start their “Recycle for Sight Month off in the best possible way. There are five Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca; Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja, and they are calling on their local communities to get involved so that they can collect as many glasses as possible and beat their 2013 campaign which collected 4,436 pairs.

Specsavers Opticas and Lions Clubs International are committed to helping the world to see, and this collection will change lives in areas where people desperately need access to glasses. Specsavers are asking community groups, schools and clubs to help them by having a collection and bringing them into their nearest store so glasses don’t go to waste. The campaign will run from 16th February to 29th April 2015, to find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es. After the glasses are donated in store they are sent to the Lions Club’s recycling plant in Alicante where they are first separated into single vision, bifocals, varifo-

cals and sunglasses. They are then graded according to prescription strength, cleaned and boxed for distribution. Lions Club representatives are l o c a t e d across many developing countries including Africa and India. They test the eyes of locals and send requests for the required prescription glasses onto the fulfilment plant. Lions Clubs International collects around 70,000 pairs of glasses in their Alicante Centre to be re-dis-

pensed every year, with each one being donated and hand selected for specific people in need. For more information on Lions Clubs International and to find your local branch visit www.lionsclubs.org

JOHNSON ON BAIL AFTER SEX CLAIMS Millionaire England footballer Adam Johnson was arrested on suspicion of having underage sex with a 15year-old girl after she reportedly boasted about their relationship and her father found out, it has emerged. The Sunderland winger was detained at his six-bedroom £1.85m home in County Durham on Monday morning after the schoolgirl's father reportedly complained to police about the alleged liaison. It is understood the girl bragged about having a 'relationship' with the player, both to friends and on social media,

The Premier League footballer also reportedly posed for photos with the girl on a number of occasions.

The news emerged as the schoolgirl at the centre of the claims - who has the right to lifelong anonymity - was named online. The publication of her name prompted Durham Police to issue a reminder that anyone who names the girl will face prosecution. It comes after the young woman who was raped by footballer Ched Evans was widely named online, forcing her to change her name and move addresses.

After the rumours was reported to police, Johnson was arrested at his

mansion and questioned for several hours. The player, who was signed for £10million in 2012, has since been released on bail. He has also been suspended by Sunderland AFC, pending the outcome of the police

ALFAZ FANTASY SPONSORED BY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

An early start on Friday 20th February from Preston to Euston, and thanks to some excellent travel arrangements from Carl Gleave at BETFRED, two connecting over ground trains and a short walk through West Brompton gardens we arrived at Stamford Bridge.

After a 'brief' visit to Frankie's Bar, listening to the Chelsea fans discussing the match prospects, we checked into the Millennium Hotel, where once again all the arrangements by Carl at BEDFRED made the checking-in procedure very easy.

On Friday afternoon and evening we went into central London, using the oyster card system operating in the capital, for some sightseeing and enjoying the hustle and bustle of the capital. We woke early on Saturday – possibly in anticipation of the afternoon game, so we took advantage of the hotel location and had a walk along the Thames embankment. By the time we got back to Stamford Bridge we could feel the excitement building so we had a walk round the stadium, and some more photos before we got ready to

go to the Chelsea hospitality suite.

We arrived at the Chelsea hospitality suite at 1230pm, minus any football colours, warmly welcomed by the suite manager who provided us with our menus and programmes. We had an excellent meal with suitable liquid refreshments served by our attentive waitress Nicki, until we went to our allocated seats in the West Stand, next to the 'Shed End' goal mouth end.

The atmosphere was superb with a capacity crowd, and the noisy Burnley away fans singing and chanting , the teams came onto the pitch, the Chelsea football song 'Blue is the Colour' was played all the way through, the ref blew the whistle and we were off. The seats were really superb, padded with heaters in the roof blowing warming air down onto the fans – luxury.

The first half was really exciting, Chelsea played well but Burnley had their moments as well.

Back to the hospitality suite for half-term refreshments, including that Turf Moor staple Benny 'n'

Hot, which was being sampled by others in the hospitality suite. We returned refreshed to our seats for an even more exciting half – never has a football match gone so quickly !

Heard from Chelsea fans 'come on Chelsea its not Real Madrid its Burnley'. And what a result 1-1. The Chelsea fans sat near us shook our hands and said 'well done', they were a bit shell-shocked.

We were probably the only ones smiling when we returned back to our seats in the hospitality suite for the post-match drinks, still celebrating the result. More sightseeing in London Sunday and Monday, including the London Eye and the West End. We left the capital Monday afternoon from Euston after having a great time.

We had a fabulous weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves so a BIG THANK YOU to Chelsea Hospitality, BETFRED and Eric and Terry. Elizabeth and John Crabtree Good Luck to everyone this season.

IRELAND TOO STRONG DICKINSON CRITICAL FOR ENGLAND OF REFEREE

Ireland moved a step closer to retaining their Six Nations title and completing a Grand Slam with a 19-9 win over England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Sunday.

The half-back pairing of Conor Murray and Johnny Sexton were in superb form and were the key difference between the two teams. Sexton was excellent with the boot and kicked four penalties as well as converting Robbie Henshaw's try – delivered by a sublime chip from Murray.

England were valiant in defeat but only really started to make inroads when Sexton went off with an apparent hamstring injury. They thought they had scored in the final minute but Billy Twelvetrees' pass to Jack Nowell was judged forward and they had to settle for two penalties and a drop-goal from George Ford.

Ireland's win ended a run of four successive defeats to the English, whose own hopes of the Grand Slam disappeared after this result

Scotland prop Alasdair Dickinson has criticised George Clancy following the Irish referee's performance in Saturday's Six Nations game at Murrayfield.

Scotland suffered a third defeat in this year's Six Nations after being beaten 2219 by Italy - and face the possibility of a fourth wooden spoon in 11 years.

But, while Dickinson said Scotland "should have stopped" the driving mauls Italy used to devastating effect as they came back to win with a late penalty try, the Edinburgh forward insisted Clancy did nothing to help the home side at the scrum. The set-piece duel was held up time and again in the first half as Clancy lectured both sides on their engage method before finally scolding the front-rowers for showing a "terrible attitude".

But Dickinson said he had no idea what the referee's issue was. "I think he was making a mountain

out of a molehill at times. When he let us scrum, we scrummed really well and got penalties," he said. "It was just frustrating that it seemed to take an age to set up.

"The scrum is so heavily regulated now, but it seems like front-rows don't know anything about scrummaging any more and refs do. I don't know many prop refs to be honest. "It's frustrating because the last two games we have scrummaged really well. And at times on Saturday we did."

The Scots' defeat to Italy follows a 15-8 loss to France in Paris and a 26-23 reverse at home to Wales.

ALONSO TO MISS AUSTRALIAN GP

38

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso will miss the Australian Grand Prix following his crash during the second pre-season test in Barcelona. Kevin Magnussen, who Alonso has replaced for the 2015 season, will partner Jenson Button in Melbourne.

Alonso has been ruled out on medical advice but McLaren remain confident that the two-time world champion will return for the Malaysia GP at the end of March.

In a statement, the team confirmed doctors had advised Alonso not to drive in the season-opening race ‘to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is normal medical procedure when treating athletes after concussions’.

However, according to McLaren, Alonso's doctors have detected 'no evidence whatsoever of any injury' and permitted the 33-year-old to resume training. Alonso was rendered unconscious during his accident at the Circuit de Catalunya on February 22 when he lost

4th March - 10th March

control of his MP4-30 car and struck the track wall at high speed. McLaren later attributed the accident to an unpredictable 'gust of wind'.

The Australian event will be the first race weekend that Alonso has not competed in since 2002, when he was a test driver for Renault. The Spaniard tweeted that it would "be tough not to be in Australia" but he "understand the recommendations" and the risk of a second such impact in a short period of time.

PELLEGRINI HITS BACK AT CRITICISM Manchester City boss sure, especially from the

Manuel Pellegrini has come out fighting amid speculation over his future at the Etihad. The Chilean has come under fire in the past week following losses to Barcelona and Liverpool that have damaged City's Champions League and Premier League ambitions.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Wednesday's game with Leicester, the he said: "I never have any pressure to win an amount of titles and to win a title every year if I want to continue here. "I don't feel any pres-

media. I feel pressure only when I don't see my team playing the way I want to do it."

Prior to Pellegrini's appointment, chief executive Ferran Soriano said City's ambitions were to win five trophies in five seasons. Pellegrini won two in his first season but insists he has not been told of any minimum requirement per year.

He said: "When I signed the contract, I was never told I must win a title every year or that I must win five trophies in five years.

CHELSEA W I N AT WEMBLEY

40

4th March - 10th March

Celebrations were in full swing at Wembley Stadium on Sunday as Chelsea beat London rivals Tottenham to win the League Cup. Goals from John Terry and Diego Costa secured a 20 triumph, as Jose Mourinho claimed his first trophy in his second spell as manager.

Spurs impressed throughout the final, with Christian Eriksen rattling the cross bar in the first half with a stunning free kick and Harry Kane threatening late on, but the Premier League leaders were just too strong.

Mourinho started off the celebrations by calling his wife immediately after the match to inform her of the

good news that Chelsea won

‘I rang my wife,’ an emot i o n a l Mourinho explained. ‘She didn’t know the result. I had my son and my daughter here, but my wife was at home and didn’t know the score until I called.’
