Dear Readers

Wet wet wet..... the rain has got to most of us over the last week and today in some parts of the North Costa Blanca it has been hammering down. Grey skies, rough seas and loads of down pours is not why we're here at all. I was talking to a couple staying in Albir at the weekend who had told me that their week here in the Costa Blanca had been wet cold and miserable especially at night, as their apartment had very little to offer by way of heating and it was only the extra blankets that saved them from sleeping in the cold. Most of us living in Spain know only too well that the properties (in the main) are not great in the winter months with poor insulation, poor heating solutions, and the cold nights can be rather uncomfortable if you are not geared up for it. Well the good news is SUNSHINE and loads of it from Thursday onwards, with temperatures on Friday and for the weekend rising up to 23 degrees so YIPEEE......at last the end of March will give us a glimmer of real Spring sun and goodbye to the rain until next Autumn (we hope).

Easter is looming and in only just over a week it is April, which starts with the long bank holiday weekend. Thursday 2nd April is Maundy Thursday which commemorates Jesus Christ's institution of the Eucharist during the last supper, as described in the Christian Bible. This is a National holiday in Spain, followed by Good Friday on the 3rd. Look out for our bumper issue next week with everything possible for your Easter holiday reading including extra puzzle pages, The Weekly Buzz "What's on guide for Easter" and a few other surprises lined up for everyone..... one last thing a reminder to set your clocks to Summer daylight saving time on Sunday 29th March, put them forward 1 hour. So until next week all the best

4U 9525 left Terminal 2 El Prat Airport, but about 45 minutes into the flight the plane went into a sharp and unexplained descent from its cruising altitude of 38,000 ft to roughly 6,000 ft. Contact with the plane was lost shortly thereafter. Most of the passengers (67) were German, but 47 Spanish were also confirmed as being on the manifest. The black box has been found, and no links to terrorism have been reported though the cause for the planes rapid descent remains a mystery. The Spanish king has cancelled his state visit to France, just hours after arriving in Paris as news of the A320 air crash broke. King Felipe, who had travelled to Paris with Queen

Letizia, made the announcement outside the Élysée Palace in front of the French President François Hollande. He sent out a message of support to”all of the families of the victims.”

Only small sections of the aircraft survived the impact

At the same time, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy also expressed his concern on Twitter, stating: “Saddened by the air crash in the Alps. A tragedy. We will work with the French and German authorities on the investigation.”

Books of condolence have been opened at a sports hall in the south-eastern French village of Seyne-les-Alpes, which has become the hub for rescue teams and accident investigators dealing with the incident. KILLER CAUGHT IN THE CANARIES

Shane Walford was jailed in 2010 for the manslaughter of Paul Gibbons at Millsy’s in Earlsdon, Coventry. The Telegraph newspaper has revealed that an ex-soldier and boxer who killed a Coventry firefighter with a single punch has been arrested by police.

Shane Walford was picked up by officers on the Canary Islands yesterday – just days after his name appeared on the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) list of the 10 Most Wanted criminals. Walford, 38, was jailed for four and a half years in 2010 for the manslaughter of popular father-oftwo Paul Gibbons, following an unprovoked attack in a Coventry bar.

2006), the NCA revealed the names of 10 criminals and suspects they believed to be on the run in Spain.

Walford was on the list and his arrest means that in the last eight years 66 out of 76 named suspects have been caught.

The authorities are still appealing for any help in bringing the remaining 9 fugitives currently on the Operation Captura list to justice. By Russell Ash

Walford attacked Mr Gibbons inside Millsy’s in Earlsdon in 2009.

In court Mr Gibbons was described as “the best father to his children and someone who was forever helping friends, work colleagues and even strangers”.

Walford served half of his sentence behind bars but once he was released, he breached the terms of his licence and went on the run.

A stag party were ordered off a flight bound for Spain after they were accused of being 'disruptive' and reducing an air steward to tears because of their behaviour.

After they made a male flight attendant cry, the pilot called the police and ordered the party to leave the plane - which was due to take off from Manchester Airport and fly to Alicante on Friday, March 13.

According to the group, a male steward said he 'couldn't cope' with them and broke down in tears.

One of them, Chris Jones, 32, said: ‘No one was drunk. We were not wearing stag T-shirts or being loud or offensive. 'We had a bite to eat and a beer and got on the plane.

We took our seats and were talking in groups, as you do. About five to 10 minutes later, we heard a whisper the police had been called to kick someone off. We had no idea it was us’. The group lost over £4,000 between them as a result and the groom is said to be devastated.

Police removed a number of individuals from the aircraft, while others disembarked voluntarily.

Each member of the party has lodged a formal complaint with Ryanair and they reportedly received no warnings before being asked to leave.

A spokesman for Ryanair has denied that the group was treated unfairly.

A British writer Susan Greta ReadLobo (Sue Lobo), a member of the Pensioners Association of ‘Raco de l'Albir’ has become one of the winners of the international literary contest ‘Creative Talent Unleashed’, which was held in California at the beginning of March.

Her prize book of poems called ‘The last dance’ speaks about the transition from life to death. “Life and death are two factors which join us together as living beings, regardless of what we will pass during our journey on earth” explained the writer. “This is a book written with the aim of giving hope to people”, she added. In May 2011 Susan wrote a book of memories about her childhood in Africa called ‘Lollipops of Dust. Memories of an African childhood’ explaining how she left England in 1955 with her family when she was two years old to live in the heart of

nature alongside the Bushmen.

The heads of Culture and Elders Departments, Rocio Guijarro and Isabel Muñoz have congratulated Susan for the success. Her book of poems ‘The last dance’ will be published soon.

“The improvement works are running smoothly” said Lourdes Barreiros, the architect in charge of the works monitoring. “Half of

the building is already up and the structure of the building has been reinforced”, she added and also explained: “outdoors the whole plot is being adapted by creating a garden area, which will be planted with native specimens from the nursery of ‘Los Carrascos’ park”.

Twelve students from the IES L’Arabi high school formative program for Professional Basic Gardening are also cooperating with these improvement works, which are part of the Heritage Recovery Plan launched by the local government.

TERRA MITICA COURT CASE FINALLY BEGINS

On Monday 23rd March a court case began involving the officials accused of alleged looting during the construction of Terra Mitica theme park.

This is the first corruption case involving top politicians from the Valencian Partido Popular (PP) and according to the Public Ministry these “so-called” businessmen hatched a plot, in collusion with the heads of the theme park, to defraud the Treasury for corporation tax and IVA (VAT) to the amount of €4.4 million. This long process started with one complaint from the Agencia Tributaria (Tax Office) in 2005. It was shelved twice, but now

Luis Esteban (former president), Miguel Navarro (former director-general), Justo Valverde (former trading director) and Antonio Rincon (former technical director) are sitting in the dock.

35 individuals and 26 companies will take to the stand for 70 sessions during the proceedings, which will last until September. There will be over 120 witnesses called and the judge has requested that bail is set at over €11 million.

three involved – but one of the periods when the men were in business unchecked has expired.

It has been fifteen years since these corruption plots were uncovered. At the time the PP was managing theme parks, race tracks and film studios with public money, plus MRIs and health care. Most of the politicians were not

qualified for the job they held, raised to positions of power simply on family or friend affiliation.

The worse is the negative image which is projected on Terra Mitica, now managed by a private company, and on the town of Benidorm where the implication of “corruption” will take a long time to disappear.

The public prosecutor’s office has asked for Esteban to receive seven years imprisonment for fraud and tax offences, and ten years for the other

THE GREEN PARTY AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSE

In agreement with the new EU strategy concerning animal welfare and other Valencian towns, the ‘Compromis Los Verdes’ party has submitted a municipal motion to the Benidorm registry for the town to be declared “a town against animal abuse”. Josep Bigorra, Head of the Green Party, explained the motion has been submitted with the aim of expanding the animals’ protection bylaw.

The Town Hall would have to conduct campaigns to promote awareness, especially at schools, and they will have to create a new protocol which guides officials and local police on how to proceed after receiving a notice of abandonment,

loss or animal abuse.

The mentioned campaigns would have the cooperation of the Benidorm Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Plants (SPAP Benidorm) and all veterinary clinics and pet stores who want to be involved.

Partner establishments: Mascotas Paraiso, Clinica Veterinaria Costa Blanca, Pajareria Canet, Clinica Veterinaria Europa, Hospital Veterinario Marina Baixa, Como el perro y el gato, Clinica Veterinaria CasaGrande, Caraby, Clinica Veterinaria El Rincon, Hobby Zoo, Kiwoko, L’ anouer, Clinica Veterinaria La Cala, La Clinica de Marina, Ladridos and Tien 21.

They also want to remind everyone that there is a food collection campaign going on until the 31st March.

Every item of food received will be donated to the SPAP Benidorm for the town’s cats and dogs centre. This campaign is sponsored by ’40 Principales’ Radio Station in Benidorm.

SPORTS CENTRE REOPENS AFTER OUTBREAK

The Benidorm sports centre ‘Palau d’Esports L’Illa’ reopened its doors on March 24th after being closed for two weeks due to an outbreak of Legionnaires, which was produced in the pool’s locker room showers. Six people were affected and five of them were hospitalized. All are recovering successfully.

The Public Health Department has authorized the reopening after certifying that the premises are totally safe and there is no trace of the bacteria after the three cleaning and disinfecting processes… as confirmed by Head of Health Department, Mª Angeles Valdievieso.

The reopening will be partial; the gym and pool will be closed for a few more days. RECENT RAIN STILL ISN’T ENOUGH

The rains in the Marina Baixa area during the last week have not been enough to ease the region’s drought. The Guadalest reservoir has measured a rise of 0.03 cubic hectometres, but this is only 33% of its capacity.

The Amadorio reservoir however is losing water every week, as outlined in the periodical reports sent by the Jucar River Basin Authority (CHJ). The last measurements show it has lost 0.02 cubic hectometres during the last week, and is only at 6.06% of its capacity. Last week’s rains have been of low intensity and spo-

radic, so in towns like Benidorm, Altea, Alfaz del Pi and Villajoyosa it has only rained 15 litres per cubic metre during the whole week. Meanwhile in other areas of the Valencian Region they have had flooding and river swelling alerts.

The reason why it has rained more in other areas is the wind. If the wind blows from North-East (as has happened) the clouds arrive to the Marina Alta, L’Alcoia-El Comtat and Alt Vinalopo areas and then they are trapped by the mountains and release most of the water, which then cannot reach the Marina Baixa area.

CRAFT FAIR BACK THIS WEEK recent ' Competiton of the Choirs'

Due to the bad weather forecast the craft people who set up their stalls every Saturday morning in the square in front of the Post Office in Jávea, decided to cancel the fair this week. But, to their annoyance this Saturday, the 21st, proved to be a nice spring day! The artesans want to appologize to all who came to see them and only found an empty square.

They promise to be there this Saturday (the 28th - if the weather permits!), but the next week, Easter Saturday, they have to give it another miss, because the square will not be available. After Easter, from the 4th of April, they hope to be able to set up stall every Saturday again till the end of May. If you want to see if the fair is on, who is com-

ing and what they make (and sell), have a look at www.amata.es under "Coming events". More information (also in English) on 639 979 678.

SPAIN ATTRACTIVE TO INVESTORS 11th March - 17th March

According to a recent study carried out by leading commercial property and real estate services consultants, CBRE, 15% of European investors placed Spain as their favourite investment destination, behind only the United Kingdom, which was chosen by 31% of the investors surveyed.

This demonstrates that the improvement in the Spanish economy is being reflected in the opinion of real estate investors, which puts the country at the same level as Germany for the first time, and indicates that real estate investment in 2015 will consolidate the trend of the previous year, when the investment in Spain exceeded 10 billion euros.

The main reason for this positive trend is that the demand is no longer

focused only on prime products in the major cities but has now spread to a broader spectrum. Diversification into new locations and alternative products makes it more likely that this trend will be maintained, said the experts from CBRE.

As part of this strategy of diversification, 32% of the investors have directed their interest towards real estate debt, which has established itself as the most popular alternative sector, reaching a volume of 49 billion euros in 2014, compared to 10 billion in 2012, while 27% of the investors opted for investment in student residences, followed by the leisure and health sectors, both with 17%.

Another of the conclusions of this report is that Madrid remains in second position, after London, with regard to which cities are most attractive for investment, and stands ahead of Paris, Berlin and Milan, while Barcelona takes the eleventh place in this ranking.

A HOLIDAY HOME IN SPAIN COULD HELP COMBAT WINTER SADNESS

22

BUYING a property on Spain's coasts or islands could help alleviate winter depression – it's official. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as a result of lack of daylight is surprisingly common, leading to lethargy, feeling gloomy and craving junk food, since natural light raises cortisol levels in the brain and leads to better concentration, mental sharpness and feelings of wellbeing.

In fact, the Online Psychology Degree website says exposure to additional daylight alleviates symptoms for between 50% and 80% of SAD sufferers. Add to this that the Mediterranean and southern areas of Spain, and even the Canary Islands which are an hour behind, have record amounts of annual sunshine, including when the weather is cold, a

11th March - 17th March

break on the Costas could be the key to beating winter blues.

With sunlight at 325 days a year the attraction to live in sunny Spain is the answer for those who cannot cope with the long cold and gloomy winter months in the UK. Even though this does not mean beach and pool weather year-round, these areas still have milder winters than northern Europe and sunlight instead of grey skies makes life easier to bear in the chillier months of the year. The vast majority of property buyers who choose Spain say the better weather is one of the many factors they opt for either a holiday home or permanent residence there.

And cloudy skies and dark nights elsewhere in the northern hemisphere could well have something to do with the fact that sales of homes in Spain have risen in the last month, pushing property values up. Foreign buyers shelled out just over €6 billion on property in Spain

between January and September inclusive last year, according to the country's ministry of public works and infrastructure, a rise of 30% on the same period in 2013.

They accounted for 13% of homes bought in Spain in 2014, the ministry reveals, and British purchasers continue to lead the way with 17% of non-Spaniards buying a home in the country being from the UK. The weather aspect means that, not surprisingly, the regions of Andalucía and Valencia were the most popular with buyers - areas that include the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Costa del Azahar and the Canary Islands.

Home values were up by 0.2% in February this year - the most recent statistics available - compared to January, with an average property price across the country of €1,595 per square metre approximately €159,500 for a large, threebed apartment or a small villa or townhouse.

However, the great news for SAD sufferers seeking a bolthole in sunlight is that one of Spain's 'brightest' regions being in Alicante and the North Costa Blanca has some of the lowest home values, meaning bargains galore.

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE25 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

It’s time to put practical matters and work matters to one side and focus on your personal and intimate relationships, as they’ve been left on the back burner for too long. Make your lover your whole focus this week and do what you can to please them. It’s only fair. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

The lunar high lights up your life and shows others that you’re a very positive driving force. You work hard to achieve success and you don’t allow anyone’s negative responses to hold you back from your objectives. Keep your eyes open for new love. It’s coming.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Don’t believe everything you hear in your career zone this week, especially if someone has something to gain by getting you out of the picture. You’ve been down this road before so keep your eyes and ears open. Jealousy is a terrible thing. Don’t buy into it.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

It’s another week of minor, petty conflicts with colleagues and friends and you’re starting to tire of the incessant back biting. Do what you can to create a more harmonious atmosphere even if it means your own projects have to take a back seat. It’s temporary. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

You’ll have the gift of the gab and the ability to charm the birds from the trees this week, so bosses may give you some extra responsibilities at work, and there’s nothing you like more than being in charge. Don’t abuse this power. This could be a secret

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

It’s all very well being measured and weighing up the pros and cons of a working situation, but you cant apply that criteria to love and romance. You have to lead with your feelings, your emotions, your impulses. Yes you have them, so stop messing around. Go for it.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

The time is now right to go out on a limb and take a chance, just not over money though, but everything else is fair game. Avoid confusion in personal relationships by being scrupulously honest with partners and family. Clear the decks of the old to be able to move SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Don’t let the lunar low at the start of the week hold you back. Yes you may feel a bit more emotional or out of sorts than usual, but you instinctively know this will pass, so don’t buy into it. Keep a low profile until you’re confident that you can take the lead SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

You’re feeling confident and creative, so now would be a good time to think about the changes you want to make at home. Firing up everyone else’s enthusiasm wont be hard for you, as others see you as a natural leader when it comes to things like this. Go CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

You’re at your most comfortable at home this week, as the world at large suddenly seems like a threatening place. Some of your duties and responsibilities at work unnerve you. Maybe this is a good time for a sit down with bosses to reasses your job description.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Family trends all look good now, so there may be small rewards coming in. These gains may be financial or they may be emotional but either way, you’re glad they’re on the way. Don’t compare yourself to others at work or play. You’re different to everyone else. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

Work matters continue to be productive and you’ll benefit from taking on new tasks. See existing situations from a different angle and that will help too. You’re making your own luck as you go along and its much more satisfying when you do something on your own merit.

MAZDA CX-5 2015 REVIEW

The Aisin six-speed auto loses 2kg and offers longer high ratios to further aid efficiency, while the engine uses idlestop technology and adopts trick items such as an ondemand water pump to further boost its green credentials.

To these eyes, it’s a more coherent design than its predecessor, but it’s also moving towards German appliance. Like the previous 508 or not, at least it was undeniably a Peugeot; the new one could almost be a Volkswagen.

Opening the door to a mid-spec Allure diesel sedan, priced from €45000, 90 plus on-road costs and the traditional 508 top-seller, the immediate waft of quality leather trim entices. Settling into the comfortable seat furthers this feeling as you note the 7.0-inch touch-screen.

The contrast is in the rear, where the centre fold-out armrest houses two substantial cup-holders for rear-seat passengers, who also gain their own climate-control zones to go with decent leg and head room; is Peugeot after a slice of the silver service taxi market? Regardless, the 508 does feel smaller than large sedans such as the Hyundai Genesis and Ford Falcon. Think of it as a larger medium sedan, such as a Toyota Camry, and you’d be closer to the mark.

In front, there’s a large steering wheel, the Peugeot lion front and centre, while new plastic paddle-shifters feel <.55< almost brittle to the touch. The same can be said of the / cabin plastics, which feel harder than you may expect, with the exception of the soft, beautifully-damped ‘grab’ handles. Overall, the Peugeot is a curious amalgam of quality and cost containment. Firing up the 120kW/340Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel four-pot reveals a sophisticated oiler under-bonnet, idling with little of the vibration generally associated with an engine of this type. The gated gearshift for the six-speed automatic transmission lacks a smooth action, but perhaps that was due to the ‘newness’ of the tested vehicle. With the traditional torque converter gearbox, drive take-

up is smooth and the diesel engine continues to impress, being grunty enough to spin up the wheels away from intersections but quiet enough to enjoy a motorway conversation without a hint of raised voice. Even dropping down a couple of gears and hitting the throttle fails to disrupt its composure, the engine actually taking on a pleasant induction note under power.

In practice, the 5.7L/100km claimed fuel consumption figure is hard to match, even with motorway runs. The record shows 8.9L/100km in general driving.

Moving onto the newly-powered entry-level 508 Active petrol (available from €35,000 plus on-road costs), it does lose some luxuries, but immediately feels a better value proposition. It retains key upgrades such as the navigation and reversing camera, but does without the keyless entry/go and quad-zone climate, though it still offers dual-zone and rear-seat ventilation.

The seats, now combined cloth and leather, remain comfortable and the new driveline is even smoother than in the diesel, while producing 121kW/240Nm from a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol four that consumes a claimed 5.8L/100km.

.

=

$1*74< 08 =8

6*+<+.72-8;6 =8 <.. 918

The petrol-powered 508 immediately feels the betterresolved package. Its relative lack of low-down torque means you won’t be scrabbling for traction away from intersections but the engine remains smooth and offers good response on light throttle loads which, let’s face it, is where it will be doing most of its work. It will also rev out keenly, though there’s no real point as there’s no real power peak to be chasing. Fuel consumption also goes through the roof, sitting at 10.1L/100km over curvy road loop that encouraged low-gear acceleration out of tight hairpins.

The Active also feels lighter on its feet at all times, riding better over bumps and turning-in more keenly. Even the steering feels improved, though it is still slow in its offcentre reaction. Braking, incidentally, is impressive in either variant, with consistent pedal feel and strong stopping power.

At €6000 less than the Allure, it is the 508 Active that is the better overall proposition, though it is the market that will dictate if that pricing is correct, with Falcon, Holden Commodore, Toyota Avalon and even Skoda Superb options available for less money. VEGETARIAN AND PREGNANT? Everybody knows that a balanced, healthy diet is essential in pregnancy. So, what about expectant mums who are vegetarian or even vegan?

It is vital to provide enough nutrients for the pregnant woman’s own health as well as for the development and growth of the baby during pregnancy.

Some of the biggest concerns is that vegetarian and vegan mums-to-be need to make sure they get enough iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D and calcium. Alternatives need to be found!

Iron

Good sources of iron for vegetarians and vegans are: • pulses • dried fruit such as apricots • dark green vegetables • wholemeal bread • fortified breakfast cereals (with added iron) • eggs (for vegetarians who include them in their diet)

Vitamin B12

Good sources of vitamin B12 for vegetarians are: • milk and cheese • eggs

G o o d sources for vegetarians and vegans are:

• fortified breakfast cereals • fortified soya drinks • yeast extract such as Marmite As sources for vegans are limited, a vitamin B12 supplement may

also be needed. If you are vegetarian or vegan your Midwife should check your levels.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is found in meat, oily fish and eggs, but your body can also make vitamin D when your skin is exposed to summer sunlight. This is one of the many advantages of living in Spain! However, for vegetarians and vegans sunshine is not enough and supplements will be necessary.

Calcium

Calcium intake is usually not a particular problem for vegetarians as calcium is found in dairy products. However, for vegans alternative sources need to be found, such as: • • • • • • •

fortified soya, rice and oat drinks calcium-set tofu sesame seeds pulses bread dried fruit dark-green leafy vegetables

When in doubt, speak to your Midwife!

Help is at hand as we have now got the funding and the volunteers to do the work. I will keep you informed as to how it goes on and when we will need extra labour-

ers.....

John Torode and Gregg Wallace put five more keen cooks to the test in the first of two heats, and as usual they begin by serving up their Calling Card, a dish that showcases their talents. The judges' two favourites then sit it out while the others reinvent what they've just made, creating a new plate of food based on the main ingredient from the first round. Feature-length political drama by acclaimed writer James Graham, charting the emotionally wrought and frenzied days in 2010 that led to Nick Clegg's rise from rank outsider to the man who would decide the fate of the country. As he took to the podium for the UK's first-ever televised leaders' debate, the Lib Dem leader (played by Bertie Carvel) had been an MP for just five years and was the new kid on the Westminster block. TRAVEL AROUND

35

11th March - 17th March

MURCIA

Murcia Spain with its about 300 000 inhabitants lies about 75 km south of Alicante about 30 km west of Torrevieja. The city of Murcia can be reached via the national road E15 from Alicante. You can also arrive in this interesting city by bus or train.

Embedded in between the mountains of the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo lies the city which, due to its large and sophisticated watering system, is famous for the mouth watering fruit and vegetables it produces.

From a tourist point of view Murcia offers a huge amount of interesting places to visit as the history of the city goes back to the years 800, when it was originally founded. Certainly amongst the famous visiting points for any traveller is the Cathedral de Santa Maria. Finished in the 15th century the cathedral is the most impressive monument of Murcia.

The city is divided by the Segura River and is known for its beautiful Baroque Cathedral, Almudi Palace and the castle of Monteagudo ( where the Arab influence can be well appreciated ), a fortress from the 11th c., the Market de Veronicas, the Malecon Garden, the University of Murcia, the Casino (A Murcian institution in Calle Trapería - its ballroom is decorated in the style of Luis 15th), and the Museum Ramon Gay, which was inaugurated in 1990 when the artist was 82 years old, and also includes other works of art from other artists. Ramon Gaya was influenced by famous artists such as Vazquez and Rembrandt, to give you an idea of the intensity of his work. The cathedral, which is located at the plaza del Cardinal Belluga, just next to the river, has got different entrance doors, all of which have on their own a treasure.

A CITY FULL OF SURPRISES

The main entrance, called Puerta Del Perdon, the north door, Portada De Las Cadenas and the Portada De Los Apostoles lead you into the impressive Capilla Mayor (Chappel) decorated with lots of gold. When you take a tour around the cathedral of Murcia, make sure you visit the museum inside the cathedral, where many more details are explained.

Right outside the Cathedral you will find the city hall and the Palacia Episcopal, the residency of the Bishop of Murcia. The variety of museums, from the archeological to the museum for water systems, the science museum, to the museo de bellas Artes which shows art from Ballester and Gaya amongst others, means there is something of interest for every visitor. Murcia is the perfect city for strolling around (and a terrible one to drive in, with very complicated one-way systems and crowded car-parks). Everything worth seeing is within walking distance. The most famous commercial streets are Trapería, Platería and la Avda. Alfonso X el Sabio. The Paseo del Malecón near the River Segura is also a pleasant walk out of the city and then back again.

Churches and Convents worth visiting include: Santa Ana church, San Andrés church, San Miguel church. San Nicolás church; San Juan de Dios church and museum, Las Agustinas monastery is just 5km away. Nuestra Sra. de la Fuensanta sanctuary has great views of the city. Shopping: The most typical things to buy to eat in Murcia are meat pies (including

deer pie) from Bonache (in the pretty plaze de las Flores - Flowers square). Shops in the Trapería and Platería are also worth a look. The Verónicas market is good for famous Murcian market-gar-

den products, fish and seafood.

On the outskirts of the city you will find two very large shopping centres, IKEA and the Real Murcia football stadium.

HAMILTON DEAL NEARS COMPLETION JUKEBOX FOOTBALL

Lewis Hamilton hopes his new deal with Mercedes will be signed before this weekend’s Malaysia Grand Prix. Negotiations were put on hold by Hamilton ahead of last year’s Russian GP to allow the Briton to concentrate on his title duel with team-mate Nico Rosberg.

considering a bombshell switch to Ferrari. Whirling the rumour mill into life on Monday, The Daily Mail added fuel to the fire by declaring that ‘the Scuderia’s president, Sergio Marchionne, rates Hamilton top of the drivers available to him'.

Talks resumed during pre-season testing this winter and the partnership which secured both championships in 2014 looks set to be extended. “It is going back between the lawyers so hopefully it is done before the weekend,” Hamilton told Sky Sports News HQ. “That would be great, but if not in due time.”

ALFAZ FANTASY SPONSORED BY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The interminable delay in Hamilton putting pen to paper has prompted speculation that the 30-year-old could be

Referees were once again in the spotlight in the Premier League at the Weekend along with Spur's Super Striker Harry Kane who bagged a Hat-Trick against luckless Leicester City. Referee Neil Swarbrick became the 2nd Referee this Season to send the wrong Player off when he dismissed West Brom's Mc Auley against Manchester City while Liverpool's Stevie Gerrard lasted only 38 seconds when he was sent off against Manchester United for stamping on Herrera by Martin Atkinson. On the bright side there were 4 Premier League games where they was not a yellow card in sight. I can't remember that happening before. Another point worth mentioning is that Manchester City latest signing Bony was fouled by Dawson and got up then he was fouled by Mc Auley and got up. I find that quite refreshing when most forwards are practicing the art of Diving. There was 1 Monday Night game and a full Premier League at the Weekend which gave the Alfaz Fantasy League 32 goals,5 clean sheets,23 yellow cards (the lowest this Season) and 2 red ones which was mentioned earlier. At the top of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League Dennis's Team The Potters are moving into a strong position and are they are now 63 points infront of Keith's Team Max & Paddy. Spur's Striker Harry Kane's form is going to prove pivotal if The Potters are going to lift the 21st Alfaz Fantasy League Trophy. Super Rhys are in 3rd place and will be hoping for a return to scoring form of his very potent attack of Manchester City's Aguero,Chelsea's Costa and Arsenal's Sanchez who have recently been off the pace. Down at the foot of the Table Danny's Team Boro Man Dan are 28 points adrift of Gil's Kippax.

In the U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League Ginger Ninja have managed to close the gap on the Leaders Super Rhys to 26 points. At the bottom Calum's Rees-RedDevils have also moved closer to Adam's Team What's the Point who have returned to the relegation battle after a few Weeks out of it. There has been no change in the last 5 Weeks at the top of our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction.Max & Paddy,Super Rhys and Florida Pearls remain in 1st,2nd,3rd place in that order. At the opposite end of the Table we have a new Manager feeling the heat with Sonny's Curry Potters now hovering over the trap door 3 points behind Danny's Sarita F.C. Hot Stuff Hey ! Our Mark Carter Ladies Section is proving to be the most exciting. After being over 3 Month's at the top Lesley's Laws Lads have been knocked of the Summit by Sarah's Team The Dons. Sarah won the Junior League a few Years ago and is proving a formidable opponent in the Ladies Section. Pauline's Vodka Army who were slow starters at the beginning of the Season are now well into their stride and have moved up to 3rd place.Rachel's Blue Murder are in 4th place and only 28 points separate the top 4.Down in the Basement Gil's Kippax are favourites to pick up the Wooden Spoon as they trail Angie's Blues by 45 points. 60 points was the maximum score this Week by Janet's Team Janski's Jewels while 2 Teams managed the lowest score of 2 points Micky's Woodside and Steve's Salford Side. They will all go into our Monthly Premier Imports Draw for a case of Wine. With the International Weekend ahead

our Manager of the Month has finished a Week earlier which is good news for Janet whose Team Janski's Jewels just pipped Al's Har Joes by 1 point. She can look forward to a super meal for 2 at Sonny's Curry Pot who have recently moved to Arabi Plaza and are well known for their tasty dishes of authentic Indian Cuisine. Another Team dining our is fasted moving Team Colin's Bentley Boys who moved up 32 places to No 149 qualifying him for a Super Breakfast for 2 at Rafters sponsored by Kate. 2 of our Junior Managers made it through to the Quarter Finals of our very popular K.O.Cup Competition and they are Teigar's Tigers who clawed they way through by beating Village Reds 44-29 and Scott's Dog Dale F.C. who disposed of Jarrod's Team We R Leeds 49-32.Two of our Lady Managers also made it through to the last 8. Ann's Golden Girls knocked our Steve's Britannia Foods F.C. by 28-20 while Pam's People edged through by 10-7 against Dave's Jukeboxers. The Draw fotr the Quarter Finals is as follows- Pam's People v Waynus F.C. Jocky's Allsorts v Cowden Red Devils,Dog Dale F.C. v Golden Girls and Teigars Tigers v the favourites Max & Paddy. All games played on the Weekend 25th April any drawn games will be played the following Week.

ENGLAND HAMMER FRANCE IN VAIN

37

11th March - 17th March

England won an extraordinary battle but agonisingly lost the war as they beat France by a record 55-35 in an extraodrinary Six Nations finale on Saturday but came up short of the 26-point victory they needed to deny Ireland a second successive title. After 80 unforgettable minutes, England were hammering the French line in search of one more converted try that would have given them the championship but could not quite complete the job in one of the most remarkable tests ever seen at Twickenham.

After Ireland's victory over Scotland England needed to win by a margin they had managed only once in a century of matches against France and it looked an impossible task after France led 15-7 midway through the first half.

Stuart Lancaster's side surged back, however, with score after score to keep their hopes alive, although France, playing their best rugby of the campaign, refused to lie down.

When the whistle finally sounded England were left second in the standings for the fourth year in a row and France fourth, in the bottom half of the table for the fourth successive season.

"I'm gutted really," Lancaster told the BBC. "It was one of the most courageous performances I've seen from a team. It was an unbelievable game of rugby.

"The first two France tries hurt us. But to come back like we did -- it will go down as one of the great games of rugby." England were rocked by conceding two tries in a five-minute spell in the first half by Sebastien Tillous-Bord and Noa Nakaitaci which turned a 7-3 deficit into a 15-7 lead after Ben Youngs had crossed for the hosts after two minutes.

England hit back through Anthony Watson and a second for Youngs to lead 27-15 at halftime and the tries continued to flow after the restart as Maxime Mermoz and

George Ford each crossed under the posts. Jack Nowell produced a brilliant finish to score again for England but prop Vincent Debaty somehow galloped 70 metres to reply for France after a great break by Nakaitaci.

Billy Vunipola bundled over at one end and Benjamin Kayser did the same at the other before Nowell's second took England beyond their previous highest score against France after their 2001 4819 win and in sight of glory. They pounded the line in a deafening finale but France, who had conceded only two tries in their previous four games, held out, leaving 82 000 England fans breathless, exhilarated and hugely disappointed all at the same time.

MERCEDES TRIED TO DJOKOVIC MASTERS INDIAN WELLS SAVE GERMAN GP

Mercedes offered a "significant contribution" to save the German Grand Prix, however, even their financial offer was not enough to sweeten the deal.

Although the Nurburging was scheduled to host this year's grand prix, the circuit's new owners failed to reach an agreement with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

And with Hockenheim declining the race, the FIA announced on Friday that there would be no German GP in 2015.

Motorsport's governing body stated that "the German Grand Prix has been withdrawn as the CRH and promoter did not reach agreement." And that was despite Mercedes trying their best to sweeten the deal. For the reigning World Champions the German GP marks one of their two home races as it also does for driver Nico

Rosberg. As such, Mercedes offered to help finance a race at Hockenheim. That, though, was turned down. A Mercedes spokesman told the Observer: "The organisation of the race calendar and of individual events is a matter for the FIA, the commercial rights holder and the individual promoters.

"In principle, we do not believe it is the job of the competing teams to provide financial support for individual events and we do not believe this is a sustainable model for the future.

"Nevertheless, the German GP is a core race on the Formula 1 calendar and we have a significant interest in this race taking place. "Mercedes-Benz has participated in discussions and offered a significant contribution to support a successful German GP, at the Hockenheimring, in 2015. "This offer was, unfortunately, not accepted."

When it comes to setting records, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic -the leading three members of tennis' Big Four -- are used to it.

No one, for example, has won more men's singles grand slams than Federer's 17. Nadal is the lone player to claim the French Open nine times and when Djokovic captured the Australian Open for the fifth time in February, he matched Federer's Open Era haul. Djokovic tied the Swiss again Sunday in another category when he beat his 33year-old rival 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-2 for a fourth title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Federer, too, owns four Indian Wells trophies.

It was a landmark 50th title overall and in a few weeks Djokovic will overtake Nadal and move into sixth spot in weeks at No. 1.

Djokovic was cruising in Sunday's final, up a set and a break, but was pegged back when Federer rallied to force a second-set tiebreak.

Serving at 5-4, Djokovic surprisingly struck two double faults in a row.

He recovered, however, to overcome Federer for the second year in a row in the Indian Wells final, last year's edition culminating in a third-set tiebreak.

MAGICAL M ATA

Juan Mata's magical volley helped Manchester United beat Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification while his former club Chelsea nervously regained their six-point lead in the Premier League on Sunday.

At the end of a week where English clubs have failed to reach the last eight of the Champions League for the second time in three years, attention has quickly turned to next term's competition with United now handily placed for a return.

Their Mata-inspired 2-1 win at Anfield left them five points clear of their old rivals in fourth, the Champions League playoff spot, as United seek a return to Europe's top table after this season's glaring absence.

They were aided by pumpedup

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard being brainlessly sent off for stamping on Ander Herrera 38 seconds after coming on as a halftime substitute.By that time Liverpool trailed 1-0 through Mata's neat first-half finish and the Spaniard added his second after Gerrard's dismissal with a stunning left-foot acrobatic volley.

Daniel Sturridge pulled a goal back before Wayne Rooney missed the chance to add a third when Simon Mignolet saved his injury-time penalty. "I think it's my best game in a United shirt," Mata, a bit-part

player under Louis van Gaal until recently, told Sky Sports.

"The second goal has to be up there with my best. After Steven Gerrard was sent off we needed a second goal because they pushed us to the end.

"It was important for me. The last few months I've not had the best moment. It is the manager who decides but I'm happy today," he added.

‘FIGHT OF THE CENTURY’ EXCLUSIVE TO SKY SPORTS Sky Sports Box Office was awarded exclusive live rights to 'the fight of the century', the welterweight world championship unification clash between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, after an agreement was announced on Tuesday.
