OUT AND ABOUT

Dear Readers

Writing to you this week is a little different. It's the 21st April and I know for sure its going to be a fantastic day. Why you might ask? Well it's my birthday and apart from that it's almost summer time and being here in Spain makes us all feel great!

The weather last weekend across the coast was magnificent, clear blue skies and warm sunshine. The beaches seemed to be filling up and it reminds me just how lucky we are to have such amazing weather, spectacular views and scenery, and the wonderful people who spend a lot of time helping others.

There is a large number of ex-pats living in Spain who volunteer at the many charities and organisations, making a difference to people who really need help and support. Week after week, all year round in almost every town across the Costa Blanca, I see and hear about people who give up their time to organise events and the huge number of people who support these events by taking part and raising funds. It never ceases to amaze me.

Last Sunday, the Weekly Buzz team took part in a 5 km fun run in support of MABS, and you can read more about this event on page 20. There are many other events coming up, and we would love to meet our readers in person, so see our “LOVE” pages throughout the newspaper for news about these local events. If you are involved in any organisation, or know of any upcoming events/charity fundraising, especially if there are any summer BBQ's going on... please tell us about them!!

In the meantime I hope you enjoy this weeks news and the extra pages, including "Property Plus" dedicated to buying, selling and renting. Our recent expansion into more areas across the North Costa Blanca is part of our ongoing plan to reach out to more and more British Ex-Pats and to be the best and most read local newspaper.

Happy reading!

ELDERLY COUPLE FIGHT PICKPOCKETS April 22nd – April 28th 2015

Brian and Joan Ogden, aged 80 and 78, from Wigan, had been out to eat and were on their way back into the Don Pancho Hotel, when thieves tried to take Mr. Ogden’s wallet. CCTV footage from the hotel filmed the thief in a purple top reaching into

Mr. Ogden’s pocket, while her accomplice attempted to block Mrs. Ogden’s view, but they weren't to be fooled.

After the pickpocket sneakily handed the wallet to her cohort, the Ogden’s followed the crooks out of the hotel and in a short exchange asked for the wallet back, and got it.

Hotel Don Pancho's guest relationship manager, Ana Labord, said “pickpockets are a problem in Benidorm, especially when tourists go to the busy open markets, but they usually do not go to hotels”.

vistacostablanca.com

the thieves, an action she would not normally recommend: “I personally wouldn't confront a thief like that, but in this case they did, and it worked out as they got the wallet back. Everybody should be careful, and not confront them, but in Benidorm violence is not a problem, just the pick pocketing like any other busy tourist area”.

No matter if you live on the Costa Blanca or you are here on holiday, always be wary of pickpockets especially in busy shopping areas, only take what you need and a small amount out with you.

Try to keep your mobile phone and wallet in your front pocket, or a secure bag. Also do not purchase dodgy jewellry or participate in the well known “shell game”, as not only are these in place to cheat people out of their hard earned money, but they can work closely with pickpocket gangs... and always have an eye open for how much money is in your pocket!

ELVIS FIESTA ROUNDUP

Joan and Brian Ogden, of Adlington

The mood in Benidorm since last Friday was one of pure Elvis mania as the fifth Elvis Festival got underway. A great success once again, with record numbers of visitors to the resort witnessing the best Elvis tribute acts in Europe. The writer of TV series “Benidorm” (and a keen Elvis fan) Derren Litten was amongst the guests, together with Tony Maudsley and Tim Healy. Many of the fans were dressed up Elvis style, or simply wanted to go back in time with style of the 60’s, quiffs and sideburns were a common trend. The three day event sold out months ago, and many more fans attended the pool side show each day at the Melia Hotel. The grand finale held at the Benidorm Palace had 12 Elvis Tribute artistes from the UK, Malta, Germany and

When armed officers swooped, Monk was

37, from Acton, was apprehended as part of a separate joint investigation with the Dutch authorities. Officers found McDonald hiding under a bed at an apartment in Amsterdam.

On Wednesday morning Jayson McDonald, aged McDonald had been hiding in Spain but it is believed he based himself in the Netherlands after officers raided a property where he was living in the CoĂn area of Malaga.

Both men are wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of drugs offences and are currently in custody awaiting extradition proceedings.

Dave Allen, Head of the UK International Crime Bureau at the NCA, said: “Our ability to capture two of our most wanted fugitives in different countries within 24 hours demonstrates the NCA’s international reach.

“Nowhere is a safe haven for British fugitives and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners across the world to track them down and return them to the UK to face justice.

Monk was allegedly involved in the handover of one kilo of cocaine in Cockfosters, London, in May 2013, and is also linked to the seizure of 24 kilos of cannabis in Colchester in October 2013.

Shane Walford, aged 38, from Coventry, who went on the run while on bail for manslaughter, was arrested in Fuerteventura as he attempted to board a flight to Ireland.

Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, the Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “It is a fantastic result to have three arrests within the first month of the latest appeal. It really is a testament to the hard work carried out by the NCA, Spanish authorities and Crimestoppers to ensure these fugitives are brought to justice.

“This should be a warning to the remaining 18 individ-

that they cannot hide forever. If the public continue to contact Crimestoppers and give information anonymously, I am confident we will see more arrests in the future.

Information given to Crimestoppers can help locate the fugitives on the Captura list.

while others were in charge of entering the premises and the rest were managing the sale of the stolen goods.

Seven people were arrested in Alicante and one in Picassent, and officers have identified 20 violent robberies from houses and 22 thefts from business premises all of them in the Alicante Province.

During the operation the officers executed five searches in Alicante and Picassent (Valencia) in which they seized electronic, computer and telephone equipment, tools, watches, silver, cash, a massive amount of jewellery and other items. The arrested are suspected of at least 42 robberies of residential and business premises.

The investigation started in January after a series of robberies in Alicante and they realised that a coordinated gang was involved in these crimes. Some of the gang chose the victims,

The operation was carried out by the Provincial Judicial Police of Alicante and the detainees are awaiting trial.

POLICE ARREST THREE FOR VIOLENT ROBBERIES

The Spanish ‘Policia Nacional’ has arrested two men and a woman and accused another two women of at least eight counts of violent robbery from homes in Alicante, Elche, Orihuela and Yecla.

By Russell Ash

The investigation began when officers from the Local Judicial Police of Elche detected an increase of violent robberies in which the thieves stole jewellery and cash.

After painstaking research they acknowledged that the robberies were perpetrated by a five member family clan, who sold the objects in different gold shops in Elche.

The Police have seized jewellery with a value of €10,000 and returned the items to their owners.

The detainees were brought before the Court of Investigation number 3 of Elche.

MEDIEVAL MARKET IN VILLAJOYOSA - 1-3 MAY April 15th – April 21st 2015

This year the Medieval Market being held in the picturesque old town centre of Villajoyosa, will have real craftspeople on the stalls. Men and women who really make what they sell, which makes a change from all those fancy dress markets with barrow boys in medieval costume selling stuff that you can get cheaper in almost any pound shop. Villajoyosa Town Hall has invited the regional craft association Amata to organise the event, and some 40 aficionados are expected to set up shop with a wide range of really interesting and original work. A lively group of musicians, plus a very talented juggler will guarantee a party atmosphere. There is of course, the usual tavern and tea tent, plus a merry-go-round and workshops for younger visitors.

makes 3D caricatures in plasticine (live or from a photograph); what a chance to get a special present for Mother's Day! Quite a few people will be working on their stall so that visitors can see how much skill, patience and love goes into the making of one single object. This is not just a market with 40 stalls - these are real people who have chosen this way of life. Joan makes lovely wooden toys and puzzles (even portraits from a photograph), Mikel makes colourful shoes and san-

Charro Escrig, the town councillor in charge of events like this, decided that this year this particular market would be something just a little different from most of the markets organised in so many places, where in fact little original craft work is to be seen. She chose Amata because this craft association is one of the very few organisers who guarantee the authenticity of all that is sold in the market. Only "Artesanía de Autor" is admitted, which means that whatever is displayed has to be made by the man or woman at the stall. So you pay a little more than if you buy it in your local bazar, but for that you get something special and you pay a lot less than if you bought something in an exclusive gallery.

So the visitor gets a chance to buy directly from the person who made the object and can even have something specially made to order if it is not quite what is wanted, although sometimes delivery might have to be made after the fair is over. All the stallholders bring their tools along and can often adapt the chosen item to suit your particular requirement, for example painting a special design or engraving a name on the chosen piece. Eloisa

dals for kids and adults and José Luis creates lamps that look like giant insects. Francisco's pottery is at the same time traditional and surprisingly modern, the bags made by Tony will last you a life time (take them with you, if you like), Juanjo recycles all sorts of materials and makes original jewelry from spoons or forks and Daniela paints beautifully on Spanish roof tiles. Several stalls offer design jewelry in all sorts of material: macramé, silver, ceramics, silk and even dried flowers.

Younger visitors can play table games, join a workshop or have a go on the merry-go-round, while their elders can fortify themselves in the tavern, the "pulpería" (your chance to try tasty nuggets of octopus) or take a tea or try typical Arab food in the Jaima. The slightly crazy musicians of Sol Redó enliven the market as does Ly, sometimes as a juggler, at others times w a l k i n g around on stilts in a variety of fanciful costumes or amazing the crowd by tying herself into impossible knots while lying on a bed of very sharp nails. The market opens on Friday the 1st of May at 4 pm. On Saturday and Sunday the market stays open from 11 am till about 10 pm. More information, also in English, on 639 979 678 and you can look at photos from other markets organised by Amata on www.amata.es.

Meanwhile, people living in the Jávea area who are looking for hand made gifts for Mother's Day and find Villajoyosa a bit out of the way, can still visit the weekly craft market, also organised by Amata, in Jávea - every Saturday (also on the 2nd of May!) from 10 till 2 in the Plaza Marina Alta, the square in front of the Post Ofiice near the Old Town. A list of participants and products (daily updated) you can find at www.amata.es/Javeasemanal.html.

TELESCOPE 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Spotting marine got easier last year when a telescope was installed at the Albir Lighthouse last year. The telescope, the very first of its kind in the Valencia region, was installed to help people spot marine animals such as dolphins and whales.

The telescope was funded by a campaign organised some very hard working peoplewhich started in 2013. It is free and has already been used by thousands of visitors to this area throughout the last year. Telescope at Albir Lighhouse

The telescope has been a fantastic addition to the Lighthouse experience, and for people who take the hike up, it is an extra attraction in addition to the magnificent view you already get.

The location was chosen because it is the area of the region where the greatest number of marine life sightings are seen.

According to RAD (the network of dolphin sightings) it is very common to see dolphins and whales and other Dolphin spotted off the coast of Albir, Picture sent by Danielle Curtis

NEW ROUNDABOUT OPEN TO L'ALFAS FROM THE N332

Today (Wednesday, April 22) at noon, the new roundabout from the national road N332 to L'Alfas del Pi opens to traffic.

The City of L'Alfas del Pi has been negotiating land rights and permits with two administrations, Central and Autonomic, since 2005 but ultimately this is a private project, valued at approximately 3 million euros. This cost has been absorbed by the four individual property developers.

The new access means the traffic lights currently in operation at the junction of the old road will be removed, and the bus stop, which is located near the Tram station close to the new roundabout, will be repositioned.

The opening of this roundabout by Development Ministry officials means greater security and circulatory flow to L'Alfas del Pi from the N332.

DONATE BLOOD A special donation campaign has been organised by the Department of Health in L'Alfas del Pi and Transfusion Centre of Alicante. This will take place on Wednesday 22 April, from 17-20.30 hours in the culture house.

"The province needs 250 donations daily to meet the needs of hospitals and maintain surgical interventions," said Esperanza Delgado, coordinator of transfusions health center of Alfaz. "From Alicante has it launched an urgent appeal for us to go to donate blood because reserves are at a minimum and makes blood of all blood groups lack," he added. Daily consumption of blood in hospitals in the Region is about 700 units and every day of the year, every minute, blood or a derivative thereof is administered. In the province of Alicante annual consumption is

around 60,000 litres and most is intended for scheduled surgery and cancer patients. To donate, you just have to be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh over 50 kilos and in good health. It is advisable to have rested for at least 6 hours the night before the donation and it is convenient to take the usual breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the time you donate blood. “This is a special campaign we do every year and usually records an average of 70 to 80 donors,” said Vicenta Baldo, mayor of Health. An appeal to regular donors and also to all those who have never participated, especially young people. “Do not be afraid, they are always attended by a doctor who, after conducting a review, determines if the person can donate their time,” said Delgado.

A Council member said “While the new roundabout represents a considerable improvement in the field of communications and removes a listed blackspot on our roads, it also removes one of the obstacles that prevented the development of four Plans of great economic and social importance for the town and l'Albir: “Villa Roca”, “Finca Angelita”, “Ventorrillo” and “New Albir”.

RUBBISH BINS BEHIND THE ART By Russell Ash

Altea Town Hall has started a new artistic project in order to hide those rubbish bins which cannot be buried. The idea is to improve the view and make them less noticeable to residents and visitors in the old town.

They have changed the location of some bins and surrounded them with a metallic structure with old photo captions of Altea. The first bins have cost €1,500 and are located in the Church square. The plan is to install more of the structures in other iconic locations around Altea.

The local government explained that this project “was done as a response to the old town residents and restaurants” and the aim is to transform the town into a more attractive and comfortable place.

FREE ONLINE SPANISH COURSE

The Alicante Province Government has handed out 600 places for a free online Spanish course. The registration deadline has been extended as there are still places available. The duration of the course will be approximately six months and it includes level and progress tests. The course can be completed through the internet on any PC, Smartphone or tablet.

‘FERIA DE ABRIL’ IN BENIDORM By Russell Ash

Until the 26th April, a total of seven restaurants are participating in the fifth Benidorm “Feria de Abril”, which emulates the iconic Seville April Fair by showcasting Andalucian cuisine.

The participating restaurants are: Bar Angelillo, Galera Sport Cafe, Los Rocieros, Taberna Andaluza, Rias

The Mayor of Benidorm, Agustin Navarro, thanked the restaurants for their “effort to agree the same prices in their products for tourists and residents to enjoy the ‘Feria de Abril’ in our town. Benidorm would not be the same without all the people like the Andalucían’s who came to the town to establish their lives. This is a great initiative to let residents and visitors know about the Andalucian culture”.

NOSTALGIC RIDE RECOGNITION

On May 3rd, the candidate from the ‘Ciudadanos’ party, Rafa Gasent, will travel to Madrid on a Vespa motorbike in order to claim Benidorm to be legally recognized as a touristic town.

By Russell Ash

Last Friday he talked to the media and press at the Paseo de Levante while sitting on a Vespa motorbike, in emulation of the iconic mayor of Benidorm, Pedro Zaragoza, who travelled to see ‘Franco’ on a Vespa to ask for women to be allowed to wear a bikini on the beaches of Benidorm in 1953.

April 15th – April 21st 2015

Gasent explained: “Nobody can understand how Benidorm can still not be recognized as a touristic town”. He will travel to the Chamber of Deputies (lower Chamber of Spanish Parliament) to deliver the request to change the Law on Local Treasuries in person. If he succeeds then Benidorm will receive €1 million extra per year from the Spanish Government for improvements. He added: “This kind of situation should have been sorted out decades ago”.

MADGE IS BACK! April 15th – April 21st 2015

Yes that’s right, Sheila Reid who plays Madge Harvey in the “Benidorm” television series has been spotted filming in the resort. The rumours are true Madge is back, ITV officially confirmed last week. The broadcaster released an picture of the 77year-old actress in a leopard print coat holding what appears to be a gold electronic cigarette.

Madge left Benidorm earlier this year when she heard she’d inherited millions in Las Vegas and headed out there with her family. But in the final moments of that episode, just after their plane took

vistacostablanca.com

off, Madge’s grandson Michael asked her if she thought the family would ever return to Benidorm, and she replied: "Never say never!" Madge is one of the most loved characters from the show and many fans expressed their disappointed when she left the show in the last series.

It has been almost a year since the Town Hall of Benidorm requested that the ‘Conselleria’ (Valencian Regional Government) create a great technological park in Benidorm, similar to the Californian Silicon Valley. The Mayor of Benidorm, Agustin Navarro, recently announced that an agreement has been reached with the ‘Conselleria’ after having a meeting with directors of Tourism and Industry.

Julio Sanchez, director of ‘Energy Sistem’, also attended the meeting; it is one of the companies interested in building the technological park or being involved in the project. It will be built on an 80,000 square metre area next to ‘Terra Mitica’ by a private company and, according to the Town Hall, will attract new technology and research companies and create 5,000 new jobs in the next ten years.

But first of all, the draft of the project must be done and the Town Hall promised they will have it ready in six to seven months and they are now studying other similar projects such as the Spanish technological centres ‘Walqa’ in Huesca and the ‘PTFA’ in Murcia. Walqa, Huesca (Spain)

LEONOR BEAUTY AT COBLANCA BENIDORM

Leonor is a family run business where mum Leonor and daughter Leonor have been trading for the last 18 years.

With 12 years experience of semi permanent make up for eyes, eyebrows and lips, Leonor Beauty also offers a complete range of treatments, including facial cleansing, beauty, massage and nails.

Lanor Beauty are currently offering anti-age treatments for only 10€. This month take advantage of the promotional launch of the latest Detox treatment. See the amazing results for yourself.

Master Herb Detox treatment is a 5 day course of “night time” easy to use foot patches that contain a special mixture of natural herbal ingredients. You can actually see the results in the morning, as the patches show the “cleanliness” of internal organs.

It is normal to see a difference between the left and right side of your body so, for example, if you have more deposits on the right side of the patch, then you would know that your organs (such as the kidneys) require more cleansing than the organs on your left side, such as your pancreas, heart and liver.

The results can prove to relieve fatigue, excrete toxins, improve blood circulation and enhance the quality of sleep.

The detox program costs only 50€ for the complete 5 day treatment, with the additional promotion of a Free 20 minute Foot Massage during April & May.

Also available is the miracle face lift “Athena”. In only 7 minutes the face lift wrinkle cream reaffirms the skin and provides a sensation of freshness and you will notice that your skin looks better and that wrinkles are reduced.

The Athena 7 Minute Lift effect lasts up to 10 hours and gives you a fresh and youthful appearance. You can even apply Athena 7 Minute Lift cream over your makeup. The result is achieved through the mixture of 12 oils that the cream contains (jasmine, orange, camomile, sesame, lemon, grapefruit, pink, sweet almond, avocado, olive, lavender, peppermint) and edelweiss extract.

Fruit acid complexes have a firming effect, reduce wrinkles effectively and achieve a more young and smooth skin. Hollywood stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Pamela Anderson already use this anti-ageing and antiwrinkle combination. Try it today at Leonor Beauty for only 10€ and see the immediate results.

ATHENA 7 MINUTE FACE LIFT cost 129€ for 80 applications. The pack includes an application brush and DVD.

CALPE

ACCIONA OFFERS PAPER CALPE IS ONE OF 20 TOWNS AFFECTED BY THE CRISIS COLLECTION SERVICE By Fred Archer

The company ‘Acciona’ (in charge of the cleaning services of Calpe) will collect cartons and papers from May 1st from businesses which request this service.

The aim is to make the paper collection process easier for the stores and to contribute to a more effective cleaning of the streets of the town.

By Russell Ash

Businesses interested in this service will have to compact cartons and papers in an orderly way and leave them outside the door by 2PM.

Companies interested in this service can contact the website: http://www.masbonitaquenunca.es/recogida-en-comercios.

Investments based solely on the property market, which dominated the economy in areas such as the Marina Alta and Baixa, have caused repercussions for most of the Spanish East

Coast Line towns, especially in Catalonia, Murcia and the Valencian Region.

Towns like Calpe, Javea, Denia, Torrevieja or Novelda are included in the list of the fifty towns most affected by the crisis. This list called ‘Atlas de la crisis’ includes all Spanish towns with more than 20,000 residents and explains the crisis vulnerability of those towns which based their touristic development by building massive urbanizations with second residences for people with average incomes.. Nowadays most of those houses are empty. There are no Valencian towns in the list of the fifty less affected towns, but eight of the ten less affected towns are located in the Basque Country in the north of Spain. In general, the Spanish northern and inland areas have been less affected by the crisis because the housing bubble had no effect there, due to the more diversified economy based on industry and exportation.

U3A JAVEA SUPPORT FOR EMAUS

At the March meeting of U3A Javea, Hazel White on behalf of Emaus, received a cheque for 1368€ with the monies to be used at local Emaus homes.

Each year the members of U3A Javea choose a local charity to benefit from their fundraising activities and in 2014 it was Emaus. Although not primarily a fundraising organisation, throughout the year U3A Javea members support and hold events to raise money for the chosen charity which also benefits from any cash surplus generated by the major annual social events. At a meeting of U3A Javea early in 2014 Hazel White gave an informative and emotional talk about

the work of Emaus locally and her experiences of working with the children at the local Emaus homes. Hazel explained that reductions in government funding were severely compromising the ability of the homes to provide even the most basic items such as food, heat, clothing and health products to the children in their care.

On Sunday 12th April almost 100 members of Javea U3A took part in the Bay Radio 3K Challenge to raise funds to support a sustainable farming project at the Relleu Emaus home with one of their members winning the prize for the Most Creative Costume.

FIERy FINAlE AT JAVEA GREEN

Two great days of bowling were enjoyed at Javea Green with 24 teams competing for the ever popular Dragon Aussie Pairs Trophy.

The four successful teams in the League stage progressed to a "four end shoot out" in the semi finals, where the pairing of Keith Hamilton and Greg Sperring defeated Sue Kent and Chris Salter while in the other match Jan Phillips partnered with Gary Kent edged out Sue Simmonds and John North.

The Final looked over and done with as Jan and Gary led 6-1 playing the last end and THE WINNERS held shot with just one wood to be played. Greg had other ideas and after telling the watching crowd that he was "one down but had 5 seconds", proceeded to play a fabulous wood that took the holding shot out BUT on the measure he only managed to pick up a four, so lost 6-5! Congratulations to everyone for entering and enjoying a fabulous competition and a big thank you to our sponsors Dragon Insurance and Maria Morawiec for presenting the Trophy to our winners Jan Phillips and Gary Kent.

U3A JAVEA, HElP DAMA AND ABBA? THE RUNNERS UP

During their AGM in March at the Parador Hotel the members of U3A Javea were addressed by the new President of Help of Denia and Marina Alta, Candy Wright, who explained about the facilities and services Help DAMA provides.

Candy outlined her ambitions to expand the services offered by Help DAMA to start new support groups for Alzheimer Carers and for Stroke Victims. Candy introduced her Vice President, Catherine Pérez Pinto, who is a member of U3A Javea and co-ordinates Help DAMA activities in Javea.

U3A Javea President Stephen Burke explained, “each year the members of U3A Javea choose a local charity to benefit from their fundraising activities and Help DAMA has been chosen for 2015. Although not primarily a fundraising organisation,

throughout the year our members support and hold events to raise money for the chosen charity which also benefits from any cash surplus generated by the major annual social events.”

Stephen announced that the next major event is the U3A Javea 10th Anniversary Ball on 5th June at Salones Carrasco in Javea for which tickets are now available. “I am delighted that we have managed to secure Abba Elite to entertain us” he said. Abba Elite is acknowledged as the foremost live tribute to the world’s favourite pop group recreating and performing all of those classic hits. It will be an amazing evening from which the proceeds will go to Help DAMA. After a Cava reception, there is a gourmet four course meal with two starter and three main course options and coffee; with wine, beer and water available on demand and free of additional

charge, until the dessert course is concluded. After that enjoy the live musical entertainment provided by Abba Elite. Experience an excellent evening at a bargain price of only 35€. Tickets can be ordered at tickets@u3ajavea.org

Stephen told us that “U3A Javea has almost 50 different groups providing a wide range of trips, educational, recreational and leisure activities for almost 1200 members. We meet on the last Wednesday each month at the Javea Parador, new members are always welcome.” For further details visit our website at http://www.u3ajavea.org/

MABS 5K FUN RUN ANOTHER SUCCESS!

Beautiful blue sky, warm sunshine and a perfect Sunday morning for a 5km run. As people enrolled at the MABS desk, I asked myself “should I register”? 5km is not that far.... well unless you are wearing a full “top to tail” fancy dress outfit, then things become a little more difficult. The heat inside one of those costumes after a few minutes is incredible, so to run 5km is a whole different story, not to mention the other people around you running at different speeds. It was my son Marco Jnr who was inside the "Winnie The Pooh" costume, so maybe that's why I was feeling slightly guilty...

the Castle on the Moraira seafront just after 11. The mood was upbeat and for most, they couldn't wait to get the show on the road.

After seeing all the runners off, I felt the urge to partake in a tasty bacon bap from the Castle Bar. It also crossed my mind that a sneaky caña was a good idea, especially as my son and the others were taking on the task of running 5km while I was feeding my face... Guilty again...

Well it didnt take long (around 30 seconds) to convince myself, well it's Sunday after all, my day off so go on it's ok.... and with that I thoroughly enjoyed the refreshments while I passed the time.

stall offering a huge choice of tasty bites, sausage rolls, pastries, biscuits and cakes.

The entertainment carried on throughout the day with music performed by several artists including “Encore” (a local female duo) singing some fantastic jazz and swing, Pauline Gough and the MP7 band.

A big “thank you” to all the organisers and helpers including the marshals and a “very big thank you” from everyone to Pam, who prepared and organised the event which raised over 4,000€ for MABS Cancer Support Fund.

LiONS RAiSE 2175€ FROM BOOTLEg BEE gEES CONCERT

272 enthusiastic and energetic participants set off from

Total FM played some great tunes from the centre stage, plus there were many stands including the MABS cake

On 17th April The Bootleg Bee gees took to the stage in Espai La Senieta, Moraira and for the next couple of hours a packed house rocked to hit after hit from not just the songs made famous by Barry, Robin and Maurice gibb but also from the many great numbers they wrote for other artistes like Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Frankie Vaili, Candi Staton etc.

An already great evening moved up a gear after the interval as the band stormed through their set and had the audience literally dancing in the aisles.

Compered by Barry Moone and Susie Bond from PureGold 94.1FM Radio, the concert itself raised a fantastic 1450€ for TM Lions.

In addition, a Grand Raffle, which had been run by The

Lions Den (the fund-raising shop of TM Lions) over the previous few weeks, and which culminated on the night of the concert, generated a magnificent 725€.

The main raffle prize, of a beautiful hand made quilt generously donated to TM Lions by Moraira Patch-workers, went to brown and white ticket no.118, bought by Krissy Jones, who has lived in Moraira for 11 years and, as it turns out, is a regular volunteer at The Lions Den!

For details of future fundraising events by Teulada Moraira Lions, follow them on Facebook or join their mailing list by sending your details to: mailinglist.tmlions@gmail.com.

COSTA BLANCA PROPERTY PRICES HOLD

The Costa Blanca property market outperforms provinces of Castellón and Valencia As the Spanish property market at last approaches price stability after seven years of crisis, leading valuation firm Tinsa has published its quarterly report for the first three months of this year, concluding that across the country the rate of annual decline has slowed to just 3.1% However, the province of Alicante is one of six where the year-on-year price comparison shows a decrease of under 1%, and while this doesn't quite place the Costa Blanca in the select of group of Teruel, Palencia, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Balearics and La Coruña, where prices are actually reported to have risen, it does at least provide grounds for optimism. In the other two provinces of the region of Valencia, meanwhile, prices are reported by Tinsa to have fallen by 4.4% in Valencia and 4.5% in Castellón since the first quarter of 2014. A similar situation is reported in terms of the city of Alicante, where prices fell by

only 2.2% between early 2014 and early 2015, as opposed to declines of 7.5% and 11.1% in the provincial capitals of Valencia and Castellón respectively. Since the peak of the real estate boom in Spain at the end of 2007, Tinsa now reports that property prices in the

Comunidad Valenciana as a whole have dropped by 47.9%, with the decrease estimated at 50.9% in the province of Valencia, 48.8% in Castellón and 43.3% in Alicante. Again the Alicante figures look the best of the three in terms of the three provincial capitals, with an accumulated depreciation of 40.6% comparing favourably to those of Valencia (54.6%) and Castellón (52.1%).

PROPERTY SALES IN 2014 RECORDED THE BEST FIGURE OF THE LAST SIX YEARS

A report carried out at the beggining of April 2015 has shown the number of property sales during the last year in the Marina Alta area grew 10% compared to 2013, which confirmed a slight recovery of the figures in this sector but the data is still light-years away compared with the figures before the crisis started. The 2014 data seems to consolidate some recovery which was the base of the area’s economy. The 4,599 property sales registered during the last year are the best figures of the last six years in the Marina Alta area and very similar to the 2008 figures when the crisis started.

the last year the sales have increased by 1,015 rising to 4,599. This increase is similar in all municipalities but it is more evident in the biggest towns where the crisis was more notable and also the recovery. total of 10,904 sales. Fish being a favourite dish in Spain, the variety is vast and includes Sole, Swordfish, Salmon and a Special Dish of the Day.

does not live up to expectations. Carbonara sauce can be made so many different ways, but the correct ingredients are pancetta, egg, onion, cream and Parmesan cheese.

To my delight this is exactly how the chefs at El Italiano prepare Carbonara, and the richness of the cheesy cream sauce was probably amongst the best I have ever tasted anywhere. My problem is when I visit I can't just have pasta... I have to have a Pizza to share as well, accompanied by a smooth full bodied red wine that on this occasion was

One of my favourite pasta dishes is Spaghetti Carbonara. The problem when eating out in restaurants is that unless you know the method of cooking and what the ingredients are, you are often faced with a dish that simply

Not only did he choose a wine that absolutely blew me away as far as taste and quality, the real surprise was the price! Amazing value and the best quality I have had in ages... what more can you ask for when dining out?

Great food in a buzzing establishment full of atmosphere with wine to die for! And the wine is a secret, so unless to visit and ask Davide what it was he chose for me then you will not find out.... It is the best kept secret in Old Town Benidorm.

RECENT REVIEWS BY OUR READERS

Frank Sissel GREAT ITALIAN RESTAURANT This restaurant has a warm atmosphere and the staff are really friendly and attentive. The food was excellent and served promptly even though the restaurant was very busy. Some Italian restaurants in Benidorm seem to offer Italian style food but this was way better and reminded us of when we were in Italy. Highly recommended.

John Mayer Smith We went here after seeing the excellent reviews: we were not disappointed! The best meal in a long time. The owners are really friendly. All Italians. They give you space and not hovering over you. The food was homemade and delicious. The drink selection was also good. If we go back to Benidorm we will definitely book!

COUNTRY RIBS A PERFECT BEACH FRONT LOCATION

Our team visit to Country Ribs in Albir last weekend not only resulted in a delicious meal, but was an ideal opportunity to soak up the sun. The day offered uninterrupted sunshine in a idealic location, with stunning views out to the beach front and across to Calpe and the Rock of Ifach. Country Ribs is a perfect place for the whole family and is very popular with children, as the American Diner food is just the taste that most kids enjoy... ribs, burgers, pizza and even meals designed specifically for the little ones with a choice of meal deals that include a drink and desert. The menu choice offers something for everyone and some of the most popular dishes

that we noticed are the ranch style chicken and the juicy steaks. The plates are huge so be sure you visit with a healthy appetite.

The menu has so much to offer plus a selection of specialities with six exciting COMBO style sharing options. The variety is really amazing.

My choice was the COUNTRY R H A P S O D Y, this caught my eye as it included Hungarian Goulash together with a mixture of Chicken, Lamb, Spare Ribs and Pork Kebabs. The serving was huge and filled with sides of potato wedges and chips. I can honestly say the amount of food in the C O M B O was enough for 3 or 4 people.

Being meat lovers this combo was perfect. Lamb chops cooked over the BBQ, together with chicken breast, spare ribs and kebabs, plus the Hungarian Goulash

strategically positioned in the centre of the display. The team ordered a variety of other popular meals, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger and the star of the show was the full rack of baby back ribs with a

choice of 4 tasty sauces. The size of the rack of ribs amazed me, it took over the plate. The meat was falling off the bone and was complemented with a tangy Jack Daniels & Coke sticky BBQ sauce, a smokey but sweet flavour.

Our bench style table had plenty of space to sit our group of five adults plus the high chair attached at the end.

The restaurant was taken over by families so it was great to see that there was no shortage of high chairs and the mums and dads could enjoy their meals, while the smaller ones were also taking part at the table.

Country Ribs is situated in Albir directly on the beach front and also in Benidorm opposite the Riviera Hotel. The restaurant chain has been impressing clients with the quality of their cuisine for many years and has built up a reputation as being the best American diner in the area. Call them to make a reservation on 966 865 597

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE33 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Off the cuff remarks made by someone further up the career ladder sets you thinking in radical new ways, so keep your eyes and ears open for any opportunity to adapt your way of working. You’re looking for new solutions to old problems. You may find them.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

This week's lunar high redresses the balance and will turn recent negativity on its head. You finally feel that luck is on your side, so just accept it, don’t question it. Your open honest communications make you everyone’s go to person, personally and professionally. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Now that you’re finally back on a winning streak, you’ll turn your attention to your flagging social life. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine as you catch up where you left off and will be back to speed in no time. Try to get some along time before the weekend. Time to think.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You may have to cancel some social engagements with friends or partners this week in preference to doing something in your professional life. Others should realise how important your career is right now, and they do, so you feel quite bad about letting them down. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

You’re getting bored and fed up with the same routine at both work and at home, but there’s a boost in your career on the way as long as you don’t push too hard for changes before you get it. Be patient and bide your time. You know what they say about all comes to he who waits.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Now that your life is running smoothly and you’ve no challenges to face, you could feel a bit bored and redundant, so don’t make waves just because it’ll give your life a frisson of excitement. Others are more sensitive than you think to your supposedly witty asides. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

You’re feeling footloose and fancy free and that’s wonderful if you’re single, as it puts you in the right frame of mind to get out there into the world to see what’s on offer. If on the other hand you’re partnered, the warning lights are flashing. Pay heed. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

The breakneck speed you’ve been working to suddenly grinds to a halt. Don’t get annoyed at this, albeit its been rather sudden. You couldn’t have kept up that pace for much longer if truth be known. Take time to gather your thoughts and work out where you go from here.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

You’re focused, positive and determined to do everything right this week, but minor things keep going wrong and you’re starting to stress. Added to the fact is that others you trusted keep letting you down, and your recipe for success seems to be crumbling. Breathe!

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Life seems to be going along nicely for you, not too fast and not too slow, but someone is standing in the shadows watching your progress and seeing how flexible you can be in any given situation. Don’t worry, this is not a bad thing. You’re being sized up to be head hunted.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

You’ll finally manage to convey your true feelings to loved ones this week, and believe me, it’ll make all the difference. You can be such a closed book at times and you rarely give others any idea of how you’re feeling, so they feel they’re stumbling in the dark. Not any more.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

If you want to turn situations around in your favour this week you’re going to have to take your time, think it through properly, and proceed with caution. Yes, you’re going to have to take risks too, but just don’t allow then to be too extreme. Good luck.

All the world’s greatest wine regions share one aspect in common: they produce grapes that ripen slowly and exhibit different and sometimes fascinating flavours in differing microclimates within that region. Today we want to introduce you to 3 amazing wine regions: La Rioja, Navarra and Aragón. La Rioja is both a province and an autonomous region located in the North of Spain. It is situated between Castilla La Mancha to the south, Castilla León to the west, Aragón to the east and Navarra and the Pais Vasco to the north. Of course, everyone knows the wines from La Rioja. This area of Spain has over 500 wineries and is internationally famous for the quality of its wines. As well as wine tasting, a visit to this region also offers a range of activities which take place in and around the extensive vineyards, including horse-riding, hot-air ballooning, 4x4 routes… Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, a charming, tiny region four hours north of Madrid. Famous for its red wine and for being a stopover on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage that cuts across northern Spain. Logroño has plenty of undiscovered merits and allures of its own. After being named one of the top cities to live in throughout Spain, Logroño was also just awarded the prestigious honour of the 2012 Gastronomic Capital of Spain. Unaffected by the mass tourism that has swept across Spain in the past few decades, Logroño feels like a “traditional” Spanish town with a modern twist, especially when it comes to food and wine. Culture and wine together make an

the monasteries of Suso and Yuso, declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO and known for being the birthplace of the first written words in the Spanish language. Alfaro is another Region of La Rioja we would like you to discover, washed by the waters of the Ebro and Alhama Rivers. Stroll through the centre of the town and discover churches and palaces with centuries of history, witnesses of its ancient splendour, such as the old Abbey and Abbey Palace (18th century), and the San Miguel Collegiate Church, a Baroque masterpiece from the end of the 17th century. Besides this, Alfaro has a spectacular colony of storks, the world's largest nesting on one single building. Watching this number of storks flying through the air is an unforgettable spectacle. We need also to mention La guardia, a delightful town located at the top of a hill, overlooking vineyards and surrounded by a medieval wall. Navarra is an area of contrasts, ranging from the mountains and fertile valleys of the north to the dry, dusty landscapes of the south. It’s one of the four territories that make up Spain’s Basque Country. Navarra is probably best known to foreigners because of its regional capital, Pamplona, where the famous San Fermin bull-running festival inspired American author Ernest Hemingway to write some of his most famous novels, but it has much more to offer than bullfighting. One of the top sights to visit also in Navarra is the town of Olite, home to the kings of Navarra. There is a marvellous castle that makes this town in an authentic medieval city.

unbeatable combination. And add to that some amazing natural attractions... In La Rioja you'll find Mediterranean forests, high mountain areas, lunar landscapes… Apart from its capital, Logroño, you’ll be able to explore other places such as Santo Domingo de la Calzada and its cathedral, San Millán de la Cogolla, site of

Aragon is a quiet and very unspoilt region of Spain. Surrounded by mountains with the Pyrenees in the north and the mountainous Sistema Iberico area to the south. Aragon is home to some of the finest Mudejar architecture in the world. The quiet, serpentine streets of Tarazona's old town are an evocative reminder of the lay-

out of a medieval Spanish town and contain some absorbing sights. The cuisine of these three regions has in common the presence of the rich vegetables from the lands watered by the Ebro River and its tributaries. La Rioja is a Paradise for those who love good eating and drinking, as most of those who visit the region are seduced by the popularity of its extraordinary wines. The Navarra cuisine can be defined as a good combination of original elements from the delicious kitchen of the northern Spain with delicate French influences. Then the Aragonesa cuisine, as well as the Riojana or Navarra one, it is

based on a variety of popular stews that contain meat, vegetables, fish or legumes. Join us and visit Navarra, Aragón and La Rioja, for more info contact Beniconnect Travel Agency, visit our website: www.beniconnect.com, e-mail info@beniconnect.com or call us on : 966 811 847

VAUXHALL CORSA VXR (2015) REVIEW T h e L a t e s t B U Z Z f r o m t h e M o t o r i n g Wo r l d

formance. Peak power is up a little to 202bhp, but the big difference is broader spread of useful torque; 181b ft from 1900rpm to 5800rpm as opposed to the previous car’s 2250rpm to 5500rpm.

The new 2015-flavour Vauxhall Corsa VXR recipe’s unchanged. Pluck one of the UK’s biggest-selling hatchback bodyshells from the production line, drop a turbocharged 1.6 in the nose and bathe the rest of the car – brakes, suspension, even gearshift mechanism – in hours of motorsport-inspired, enthusiast-focused go-faster R&D. This time around the result is an altogether more refined fast Corsa, a keen, rewarding hot hatch that works with, rather than in spite of, its torquey turbo engine.

Inside, the new car’s a significant forward step over the old Corsa VXR, with the now-familiar Vauxhall dash – all tasteful chrome and glossy black finishes – and its crystal clear and intuitive touchscreen interface. VXR touches include unique dials, sports pedals, a nice flat-bottomed sports wheel and a pair of fantastically grippy Recaro bucket seats.

The basic price is pleasingly down £1000 over the old car, to £17,995, and there are some nice standard features, including bixenon headlights, Intellilink connectivity, LED running lights and some classy chrome bodywork accents (though you can undo all the latter’s hard with the £150 carbon trim pack. Don’t, is our advice).

Has the the Corsa VXR gone the way of the Renaultsport Clio? Hardly. While the four-door hot Clio’s

embraced a paddle-shift transmission, with mixed results, the Corsa is pure, almost Luddite mechanical hot hatch: two-door ’shell, slick manual gearbox – much VXR-specific effort’s been lavished on the mechanism, and you feel it – and, on cars fitted with the £2400 Performance Pack, big brakes (330mm Brembos up front), big wheels (18in rims wearing Michelin Super Sport rubber) and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Simple stuff, lovingly deployed. And the turbocharged engine?

An evolution of the previous Corsa VXR’s 1.6 turbo four, with tweaks to the fuel injection, air intake system and exhaust (for reduced back pressure) to usefully reduce emissions while increasing per-

An overboost function unlocks a further 26lb ft for a maximum of five seconds for overtaking bursts. It’s not an engine to fall in love with – its delivery is too flat for that, its voice too uninspiring – but it is willing, smooth and always onhand with useful grunt. Any clever tech?

The ESC stability control offers an intermediate Competition setting, which disables the traction control and loosens the stability control’s threshold while retaining a safety net should things get out of hand. VXR development kingpin and former DTM star Volker Strycek is proud of the system, claiming it was added only after the chassis’ mechanical set-up had already been developed to its full potential – the electronics are no sticking plaster – and that it’s intelligent, giving you more leeway if your mad flailing tallies with the system’s idea of calm, measured inputs. It

works effectively, letting the rear of the car wander usefully but stepping in should you run out of talent.

The Corsa VXR rides on bespoke Koni dampers with bypass valves that allow for both firm low-frequency damping, for good body control, and increased pliancy on high-frequency movements, for some semblance of ride quality. Performance Pack cars use the same technology but run a firmer set-up.

Verdict

Better than the old Corsa VXR? Undoubtedly. It’s slicker, quicker and cheaper (PP cars come in at £20,395, £2k less than the old Nurburgring edition). But if you own the previous Corsa VXR then try before you buy. You might just miss the rough edges – those brutal kicks of boost, the wheel-tugging slugs torque and the diff very tangibly going about its business – that Vauxhall has so adeptly ironed out.

HOW TO GROOM YOUR DOG

Regular grooming is very important. It keeps your dog clean, healthy, and manageable, as well as preventing yeast infections caused by matted hair, periodontal disease caused by uncared for teeth, ear infections from

excessive buildup of wax, dirt and bacteria, covers basic at-home grooming and ways to make the process more pleasant for everyone involved.

1. Gather all necessary

supplies before beginning to groom the dog. Always brush your dog first, and do it thoroughly. Mats enlarge and become unmanageable when wet. If a mat goes undetected or coat care is neglected, you may have to shave or cut out the mat so that bacteria doesn't grow between it and the skin and cause a yeast infection. Severe matting can also pull the skin from the muscle! Shorthaired dogs will probably only need to be brushed over with a curry brush or glove, while medium- to longcoated dogs may require special tools like a slicker, a pin brush, or an undercoat rake. Whatever you use, it must effectively remove loose hair and distribute oils from the skin throughout the coat. Start by brushing the dog's coat.

restrain the dog in the tub. Do not put on the dog's regular collar until late in the day (if you bathe in the morning or early afternoon) or the next day (if you bathe in the evening). A collar can cause sores around the neck of a dog who is not fully dry.

Begin on his neck and move down his body, under his belly, and on his tail. If you want, you may use a human comb or hairbrush. Stroke his coat gently with it to make the hairs lie flat. When you are finished, praise your dog.

2. Follow with any necessary clipping or other grooming that needs to be done before the bath. For example, trim out any mats or large amounts of hair that will only waste your time shampooing and drying. Dogs look best when groomed after they are bathed and blow-dried.

3. Get your dog into the tub and, if necessary, secure to something such as a suction cup-type bath lead to keep him or her in place. Some dogs are frightened by the sound of running water - if this is the case, you need to desensitise the dog to the sound. Filling a tub with water and using it for bathing just leaves your dog sitting in dirty bathwater. The regular collar should be off and replaced with one that will not stain the coat or be damaged by water to

4. Thoroughly wet down your dog. If you have a medium or large dog, or one with a double coat, a water pressuriser attached to the hose or a hose attachment for the sink, bath spout, or shower head can help you clean all parts of your dog's body with ease. Just don't force the dog if the noise hurts its ears. Desensitize it to the sound of running water.

5. Begin shampooing at the neck and move downward. It's better to give 2 diluted shampoos that rinse thoroughly than one strong shampoo that leaves residue. When you are shampooing a certain area, give it a few squirts and use your hand to spread the shampoo. For double coated dogs, a curry brush such as the Kong Zoom Groom will help you work the shampoo into the coat, especially long-haired dogs cannot simply be scrubbed with a curry. They will need to have the shampoo worked into the hair by smoothing it into a length of coat and continuing like that over the dog, or you will pay in gigantic mats. Save the head for last, and don't actually use soap around the ears and eyes. Be careful around the nose and mouth too.

6. Thoroughly rinse your dog. As long as you see dirt or soap bubbles in the water coming off of an area, keep spraying, then move on. Shampoo left in the coat will cause hot spots, an irritating spot of bald, itchy, red skin.

7. Towel dry your dog as best as you can. If your dog has a very short coat or you prefer to let your dog's coat dry naturally, you're done. If you have a double coated or long-haired dog, keep reading. Blow dry the dog as best as you can without completely drying him or her. You don't want to dry out the skin. If you have a dog with especially long hair, you may need to dry the coat while brushing it. Dogs with curly coats like poodles and Bichons need to be dried thoroughly or the hair will revert to curl. Feet always need to be dried thoroughly as well or fungus may take hold. When blow drying your dogs hair make sure that the blow dryer is on the cool setting! It may take longer than usual, but it's worth the time because there will be less of a chance your dog's hair and skin will dry out.

O'SULLIVAN COULD PAY PRICE FOR PLAYING IN SOCKS

Ronnie O'Sullivan could be set for a fine after playing with no shoes on for some of his 2015 World Snooker Championship opener against qualifier Craig Steadman on Tuesday.

In terms of the scoreline, five-time champion O'Sullivan enjoyed a relatively comfortable time of it, emerging from the first session of the encounter - that had begun with him making a century break - with a 7-2 lead over Crucible debutant Steadman.

But the world number two, who suffered a broken ankle towards the end of last year, appeared in discomfort due to his footwear at one point and opted to remove his shoes, briefly playing on in his socks. He subsequently borrowed a pair of shoes from tournament director Mike Ganley and put them on, but the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association will look into the matter to consider whether it constitutes a breach of its rules about members' dress code, which could see O'Sullivan handed a fine.

ALFAZ FANTASY SPONSORED BY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There was 1 Monday Night Game,2 F.A.Cup Semi-Finals and 7 Premier League Games at the Weekend which produced for the Alfaz Fantasy Football League 23 goals,6 clean sheets,35 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Burnley's Striker Barnes who picked up 2 yellows playing against Everton at Goodison Park. As the last Day of the Season creeps ever closer Dennis's Team The Potters crashed through the 1,000 points barrier while at the same time they seized the opportunity to stretch their advantage at the top of the League to a massive 75 points over Super Rhys. Steve's Team Themuttsnutz.com are only 5 points behind Super Rhys and have replaced Keith's Team Max & Paddy in 3rd place.Gary's Cockney Army are on the march and have jumped up 6 places to 9th spot which gives them a chance of a top 4 finish. At the foot of the Table Dan's Team Boro Man Dan are still in with a chance of escaping the dreaded Wooden Spoon as they are now only 11 points away from Les's Team Have Not Got a Clue.

In our Mark Carter Ladies Section Lesley's Team Laws Lads have clung on to the top spot for the 3rd Week running. They have a very fragile 4 point lead over Sarah's Team The Dons then comes Pauline's Vodka Army in 3rd place. This League is proving to be the most competitive with all top 5 Teams all in with a chance of lifting this prodigious Trophy. At the other end of the Table Gil's Kippax are still struggling to make up any ground on Kate's Team Mixed Bunch .the gap as now widened this Week to 37 points. Super Rhys are closing in on Max & Paddy in our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction. They have managed to peg back the lead to only 33 points when at one time Max & Paddy had a 61 point advantage. The bottom of this Section is quite unpredictable as each Week we have a new Team with the task of holding everybody else up.This Week Jimmy's Team Simple have dropped in on the bottom spot.I think Jimmy is following in his Missus's footsteps who just happens to be bottom of our Ladies Section. In our U . K . T. V. S P A I N Junior Super Rhys have stepped on the gas and have increased their lead at the top to 49 points over Harley's Ginger Ninja. Sponge Bob XI have moved back into a top 3 place and are back in contention.Last Week I said that Calum's Team Rees-Red-Devils were nailed on to pick up the Wooden Spoon in this Section and so far they are showing no signs of proving

me wrong. They are now marooned at the bottom and are now 73 points adrift of Leo's Power Blueboys. We have 3 Teams going into our Premier Imports Monthly Draw for a case of fine Wine and they are 2 Teams who top scored with 52 points,Gary's Cockney Army and The Potters and our lowest scoring Team which was Ged's Ryan Express who only managed a lowly 4 points. Last Month's Winner was Julie's 7 Palms Rotweiller Pack. Manager of the Month for April is being kindly sponsored by The 2 C's Bar Restaurant in Alfaz who provide excellent Food at reasonable prices. With 1 Week to go there is a real battle at the top.At the moment Steve's Themuttsnutz.com have a slight 2 point advantage over his mate's Team Gary Cockney Army.Rob's Scunny F.C.have dropped down to 3rd and are just 1 point infront of 2 Teams Lenny's Spreaders and Laws Lads. The Fastest Moving Team this Week was Len's Cheshire Regiment who climbed up 16 places to No 71.A breakfast for 2 awaits Len at Rafters sponsored by Kate. This Week the Quarter -Finals of our K.O.Cup Competition takes place. We have 2 Junior Teams hoping to make it through to the Semi-Finals.Dog Dale take on one of our 2 Lady Managers left in Ann's Golden Girls while Teigars Tigers have the tough task of taking on the favourites Max & Paddy. The other 2 Ties are Jocky's Allsorts v Cowden Red Devils and the other Lady Team left in is Pam's People who play Waynus F.C.If any of these Ties finish up a draw the Replay takes place the following Week. With 2 Semi-Finals in the F.A.Cup taking place last Week it will mean there will be changes in our F.A.Cup League. At the time of going to Press I have not had time to collate all the scores.so keep an eye on our website which is www.alfazffl.com for all the latest news and Results. If you can't access a computer you can always call into Hepburns or The Local in Albir and keep up to date with the Fantasy League.

QUEEN'S TO HOST DAVIS CUP QF

Andy Murray is delighted with the decision that Great Britain's Davis Cup quarter-final tie with France will be played at Queen's Club in London.

The July 17-19 match will see Great Britain bid to reach the last-four of the men's tournament for the first time since 1981, when they were beaten 5-0 by Argentina in Buenos Aires.

But PSV Eindhoven's Netherlands forward Memphis Depay, 21, could move to Anfield, though Manchester United also want him. (Express)

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, 31, made his first appearance for the club for two months on Monday, setting up a goal during a 62minute run out for the Under-21 team at Leicester. Netherlands international Van Persie injured his right ankle on 21 February. (Times Online)

Murray and British No 3 James Ward put Britain into the quarter-finals last month with three singles victories as the United States were beaten 3-2 on Glasgow's hardcourts. World No 3 Murray had expressed a desire to face the tough French on grass and he boasts a fine record at Queen's, having won their pre-Wimbledon tour-

nament on three occasions.

"Queen's will be a perfect venue," Murray said.

"I've been playing at Queen's for 10 years now, so I feel very at home there as do the rest of the British team. Fingers crossed it's a memorable summer for British tennis."

"The atmosphere and crowd support will be vital."

Britain already know they will face either Australia or Kazakhstan in September if they make it past France, who used Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon in their singles rubbers against Germany, with Julian Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut playing doubles.

Lewis Hamilton extended his World Championship lead with his third victory of the 2015 season in a Bahrain GP in which a rejuvenated Kimi Raikkonen claimed a brilliant second place.

Although Hamilton never enjoyed a lead of more than six seconds at any stage of the 57-lap night race, the polesitter took control of proceedings from the start and expertly managed his tyres and pace in the evening conditions of the desert to secure yet another win and open up a 27-point championship lead.

Behind the world champion, however, the battle for second place proved to be both tense and fast-changing

Hamilton clears the pits as sparks fly down the pit straight with Rosberg & Vettel fighting for 2nd,

with Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel and, in by far the finest performance of his largely underwhelming second Ferrari career, Raikkonen all going head-to-head and wheel-to-wheel at various stages of the race.

car after Jenson Button’s already nightmare unreliability-laden weekend ended in the same fashion it started when an electrical problem on his MP430 still lingering from his Q1 breakdown meant he could not take the start from his 20th grid position.

However, the green shoots of recovery are still clearly in evidence for the team as Fernando Alonso raced well to 11th place, the Spaniard finishing just four seconds outside the points positions. Armed with a significant upgrade for the start of the European season next month, a top-10 breakthrough may just well be achievable for McLaren next time out.

FALDO & WATSON FINAL FAREWELL

Sir Nick Faldo and Tom Watson will make the final Open appearances of their golfing careers at St Andrews in July.

Six-time major champion Faldo plans to bid farewell on the famous Swilcan Bridge - the iconic landmark which spans the first and 18th fairways - after a hugely successful career which included three Open successes at St Andrews in 1990 and Muirfield in 1987 and 1992.

Five-time Open champion Watson, who lost a play-off at Turnberry in 2009 at the age of 59, received a special exemption from the R&A to play his final Open in 2015, the 40th anniversary of his first victory at Carnoustie.

He and Faldo will be joined by the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson in the Champion Golfers' Challenge on Wednesday, July 15, a four-hole team event played on the first, second, 17th and 18th on the eve of the Tom Watson and Nick Faldo at the 2013 Open at Muirfield Championship.

MATCH OF THE WEEK

VILLA FIGHT BA CK INTO F A C U P F I N A L ASTON VILLA-1 LIVERPOOL-2 Aston Villa produced a stunning fightback to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley and reach their first FA Cup final for 15 years. Tim Sherwood’s side will now face Arsenal in next month’s final but found themselves a goal behind on the half hour mark as PFA Player of the Year nominee Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring. Villa responded just six minutes later as Fabian Delph crossed for the in-form Christian Benteke, who fired his ninth goal in his last six

matches. The turnaround was complete in the 54th minute when Benteke and Jack Grealish combined to release Delph, who fired past Simon Mignolet to give his side the lead.

Liverpool pressed for an equaliser as the game wore on and Steven Gerrard, making his final FA Cup appearance for the club, thought he had levelled the scores with just minutes remaining only for his header to be cleared off the line by Kieran Richardson.

There were four minutes added on at the end of normal time and Mario Balotelli had one final chance but his header flew over the bar as Villa held on to reach next month’s final. Villa will play Arsenal on May 30th at Wembley for the chance to lift their first major honour since the League Cup in 1996, but first Sherwood’s side face five games in the Premier League – starting at Manchester City next week – as they bid to stay in the top flight.

The 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon will see some of the top men's runners in the world compete for supremacy.

Former world-record holder Wilson Kipsang will defend his London Marathon title against Dennis Kimetto in what is being billed as a straight head to head between the two Kenyans.

RADCLIFFE

Radcliffe has made a very different comeback from a foot injury which not only ruined her London Olympics but left her

fearing that she might never jog or even walk again without pain. “It’s been a massive improvement. From June 2012 it was April 2013 before I could do any kind of running … and that was run for a little and then walk. I did five kilometres of that. It was a breakthrough because until that point I’d been struggling to even walk to pick up [her daughter] Isla from school. Walking to her school was painful. Now, just to run and to enjoy it seems almost like a gift.” WATCH THE LONDON MARATHON APR 26TH BBC1 11AM CET
