OUT AND ABOUT

Dear Readers

A very warm welcome to this weeks ‘Buzz’ readers. I was waiting until this evening which is "Deadline Tuesday" to write my little piece. The reason being was I waiting to get as much up-to-date information as possible on the results of local elections. Why you might ask? Because for me, a local business and also the local residents including the large number of British Ex-Pats, it is very important to understand who will be in charge of the decisions that will effect us. I have talked to many British residents here in the local communities who decided to vote for the first time and you know, I actually felt proud to hear that our voices are actually being heard and counted. Our votes do count and in the case of majority of local town halls, the British Ex-Pat votes could make all the difference to the results. Read the full story inside and follow the ongoing news each week to see how things actually end up, after all, of the further negotiations that will unfold in the weeks to come when forming the new leadership. Well there are a few locals town halls that know where they stand and can carry on business as usual. They include Alfaz del Pi, La Nuica and Javier. I also wanted to say to our readers how amazed I was last week at the amount of people who took the time to congratulate me and the Buzz team on the acquisition of Heat FM radio station. Apart from some negative reports that were directed from our newspaper competitors, I can thank the sincere and loyal readers and advertisers for their ongoing support. It will be exciting times over the next few weeks as locals in Moraira see the new Weekly Buzz signs being erected at the Heat FM studio offices opposite Pepe La Sal supermarket and the announcement of our celebration party in next weeks issue. We will also be printing our summer Heat FM roadshow schedule, bringing the Costa Blanca's Number 1 radio station to you in your town. To remind you again it's 90.3 FM Altea to Benidorm and also on 106.8 Calpe to Denia. Tune in for our daily competitions and most of all great hit music. I welcome your feedback on both the newspaper and the radio shows that kick off each day with "The Big Breakfast" hosted by Shorty B from 8am. My direct email is marco@vistacostablanca.com so please let me know your suggestions and feedback. Aqua Natura is now open. PP AND PSEO BOTH LOSE OUT May 27th – June 2nd 2015

Continued from page 1

The Spanish press is reflecting after all the results that the PP which is the equivalent of the Conservatives and the PSEO – Labour, both performed poorly and lost many votes to smaller individual parties. The PP remained the most voted group but were the biggest losers nationwide. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy appeared before the press on Monday evening announcing that he had taken a decision: that

there was no need to change anything within his party, only to “be closer, and communicate more, with Spaniards.” His message was that he would be doing nothing to alter the structure or composition of the government, nor the leadership of his party, because in his opinion, the PP had done a great job in the difficult times of crisis in which the electorate had chosen them to lead.

Lots of candidates were spotted by press, casting their votes early on Sunday morning hoping to create enthusiasm for their

party. There was some shocks and disappointments as there is with any election however only four towns in the region managed to win an outright majority, meaning that they got over 50% of their councilors in – Alfas del Pi, Finestrat, Javea and Teulada. The others all need to go into coalition with another party to have a majority – or in some cases even that still won´t be enough. Benidorm is a prime example and could see it virtually ungovernable, as the PP would need the support of a further 2 parties to give it a

majority, although Tony Perez (PP) is the likely replacement of the Mayor joined in coalition with Agustin Navarro. In the last election in 2011 it took almost a year to join together in a coalition with Gemma Amor.

The emergence of so many small independent parties has broken up the hold that the two main parties had – PP PSEO. But at local level it is the person rather than the party which residents vote for and what they have done for the community.

ALFAZ DEL PI – PSEO majority: PSEO 12, PP 5, Cuidanos 2, CET 2. 6051 voted = 58% turnout.

ALTEA – No majority: PP 7, Compromis 6, PSOE 4, Cipal 2, Altea MMB 2. 8982 voted = 65% turnout.

BENIDORM – No majority: PP 8, PSOE 7, CBM 3, Cuidanos 3, Liberales 2, Compromis 2. 25,374 voted = 57% turnout.

CALPE – No majority: PP 9, PSOE 4, Gent de Calp 2, APPC 2, SSPC 2, Compromis 2. 7641 voted = 54% turnout. FINESTRAT – PP majority: PP 8, PSOE 4. 2462 voted = 60% turnout.

JAVEA – PSOE majority: PEOE 14, XD-CPJ 4, PP 2, Cpmpromis 1. 9538 voted = 59% turnout.

LA NUCIA – PP majority: PP 13, PSOE 4, Cuidanos 2, Compromis 2. 6912 voted = 57% turnout.

TEULADA – No majority: PP 9, Movimento Red 4, PSOE 3, Compromis 1. 3569 voted = 46% turnout.

VILLA JOYOSA – No majority: PSOE 6, PP 6, Cuidanos 3, Compromis 3, GPV-CS 2, EUPV-CS 1. 14,622 voted = 64% turnout

6 HOMES EVACUATED Subsidised Rabies AFTER ANOTHER FIRE Vaccinations By Fred Archer

Another fire broke out close to the Montgó Nature Monday ngiht shortly before 7pm.

The fire caused a dense smoke that could be seen from both Denia and Javea and 6 homes were needed to be evacuated. The blaze, was under controll two hours later, at about 9pm and shortly after, residents were allowed to

return to their homes. Sources indicate that the fire originated close to the CAlvari chapel and mainly affected mountain área which are not strictly considered part of the nature reserve but still very close to the área, early indications show the fire could have been started by a poorly discareded ciggerette.

The natural park of Montgó has been experiencing some bad times, with two serious fires within the last year, the first, that of Jesus Pobre in May 2014 and then between Denia and Javea last September. Also, only a few days ago we witnessed the terrifying incident between the Vall d'Ebo and Pego.

Benidorm Town Hall, in collaboration with eight veterinary clinics in the town are running a “Rabies V a c c i n a t i o n Campaign” from 1 – 15 June.

During this period the participating clinics will be offering residents the opportunity to have their dogs vaccinated for only €15 – it is a legal requirement that all dogs in Spain over three months are vaccinated.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries recommends a booster every year but the current legal requirement for dogs is

every two years.

Alfaz del Pi Town have also announced a campaign which involves all clinics in the town.

The New Family Bar in La Nucia

Danielle and Lee have just taken on The New Beer Keller in Panorama La Nucia. This is just off the main Benidorm to La Nucia road (CV70) at roundabout 6. The bar had been closed for a while but they recognised a great opportunity when they saw it. It has a perfect large bar area with a glass covered outside area and also a great outdoors terrace that is perfect for taking in the sun whilst sipping at that cold drink.

Danielle and Lee have some great ideas for the bar. They are converting a room into a kids area with TV, games console, and other games machines. This is perfect for keeping the younger ones entertained. Its the old motto, "if the kids are happy, so am I."

Danielles mum and dad have run the succesful Dejuvu chain for the last 12 years and have obviously passed on some of their experience to her kitchen.

There will also be regular events at the The New Beer Keller This Thursday, May 28th there is a friendly Pool Tournament. This starts at 7.30 and Danielle and Lee are putting on a Free Buffet. Come along and play, just watch or simply enjoy the free buffet and meet the team at The New Beer Keller.

Depreciation of Euro U3A MARINA BAIxA helps Spanish exports SUNDAY STROLLERS 6

Spanish goods exports soared in March, after months of modest results, to reach a new record of â‚Ź23.2 billion, making it the best export month in the current historical series, said state secretary for trade Jaime GarcĂa-Legaz.

The figure also represents a 12.5% expansion on the same month in 2014, and coincides with slower growth of imports (6.3% for a total of â‚Ź24.1 billion). The positive numbers have slashed the trade deficit to â‚Ź890 million.

In March, the euro came close to parity with the dollar, trading at $1.05, and remained below $1.10 for much of April, raising the likelihood that exports will

continue to do well for at least a month more. Exports to other European Union members that are

not part of the euro zone grew an annual 17.6%, compared with 9.8% in the latter. Sales in Latin American countries such as Chile, Mexico and Dominican Republic expanded 37%, while exports to Asia grew as well – 33% in China – as did sales in the Middle East (51%), partly thanks to aircraft purchases by Saudi Arabia and the

Spain’s Costa Blanca was the cheapest holiday destination in 2014.

This is evident from data that were announced by the Ministerio de Turismo (Ministry of Tourism). In 2014, the average tourist spent 864 euros for a nine-day stay at the Costa Blanca. That is 36 euros less than the Spanish average and substantially less than in other beach destinations like the Costa Brava, the Costa del Sol and the Balearic Islands.

While it is positive that, even in the years of the worst crisis, the Costa Blanca continues drawing many tourists because of its attractive prices, the Department of Tourist Studies of the University of Alicante reckons it’s about time that rates at the Costa Blanca went up. The prices of many hotels and restaurants are have not risen since 2008 and that means they work with ever smaller margins and cannot invest in improvements or restorations.

Marijuana Club Applications Benidorm – the Benidorm Town Hall has received two applications last week to open private clubs where it will be possible to smoke marijuana.

This year kicked off with the opening of the first club in Benidorm where it is allowed to smoke marijuana. Apparently both the Town Hall and the customers like the idea, because there are now two new requests on the table. The "Centro Cultural La Casa de Marley", located in calle Marqués de

Comillas, is a big success and there are no complaints about it. The Town hall wants Benidorm to become an "open European city without taboos" and to give room to this kind of entertainment. The town hall intends to give permission to the two new applicants: "The one Cannabis Club", in Calle Florida and the "Asociación Stargate Marina Baixa" in the Partida Almafrá. The town hall emphasizes that these are private

clubs where it's only allowed for adults to become members and that marijuana is forbidden to be smoked in public.

In major cities like Barcelona and Madrid, private marijuana clubs are an accepted phenomenon.

ENGLISH CHOIR JOINS EUROPE DAY CELEBRATIONS

The English Choir of Teulada-Moraira were delighted to be invited by the Mayor Antonio Bertomeu to join in with the town’s Europe Day celebrations. The event was held in Teulada’s 600 seater Auditorium.

The out-going Mayor, Antonio, opened the proceedings. He spoke of Teulada and Moraira as being “a reflection of Europe…”He thanked all the people of many different nationalities who had gathered to celebrate Europe Day and said we must all continue to strive to be good Europeans.

Councilors Jodi, Carlos, and Adria were also in attendance and echoed the mayor’s words vowing to continue the good work of integration creating tolerance and respect for all cultures and leading to a harmonious atmosphere in this delightful part of Spain.

The concert which followed was compered by the English Choir’s own musical Director Joanna Baldwin and. at the grand piano was the very talented pianist Heather Butcher. The choir commenced by

singing ‘Sin Ti’ a beautiful Spanish ballad. In contrast they continued with ‘When I’m Sixty Four’ and ‘Super Trouper’ Songs made famous by The Beatles and Abba.

Finishing their spot with a selection of music and songs from Lerner and Loewe’s ‘My Fair Lady’. The choir took their bows to tumultuous applause.

Also taking part in the celebratory concert Coral Teuladina, Cor La Senieta and The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir.

During the finale all four choirs graced the stage to sing the European Anthem ‘Himno a la Alegria’ which is , of course, the Spanish version of Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ This was very well received and the audience rose to its collective feet in a standing ovation.

The English Choir’s next public performance will be on Monday 8th June at Moraira’s Parish Church when they will be singing a full length concert to include music from Phantom of the Opera, California Dreaming, Rutter’s lovely Gaelic Blessing and much more. Entrance is free as it is part of the Moors and Christian’s Fiesta. Further information about the choir can be obtained by contacting Judith on 96 648 0195.

LOCAL MARKET FRAUD

A civil servant has been charging market stalls an outrageous 2,000 euros for a license to occupy a position in the municipal market.

The official allegedly charged an individual 2,000 euros to provide them with a selling spot on the market before anyone else.

The facts were brought to the Guardia Civil by the street vendor, and on Monday night the civil servant was arrested. This civil servant, whose function is known as a “placer”, is one of the people responsible for the collection

Apparently, this official would have demanded amounts of 2,000 euros to market vendors to issue a license. One of them reported these practices to the Guardia Civil after recording a conversation with the civil servant. The Guardia Civil started an investigation which led to the arrest of the civil servant.

The arrested is facing alleged crimes of obstruction of Justice, bribery and embezzle-

From this week, the restored cultural building is 'connected' so visitors can enjoy the network free of charge and in a very organic way: through solar panel. Sunday afternoon kicked off with

The friendly bosses of the hit tv series visited the Emaus Association orphanage in Altea to learn about the type of work that Emaus do. They also learned that many of the Emaus professional that look after the children, abused women and old age pensioners 24 hours a day, 7 days a week have been doing so without wages for the last 6 months due to harsh government cutbacks on essential funding.

With over 6 million television weekly viewers and over 1 million followers on Facebook Derren, Simon and Janine Duvitski who plays Jaqueline in the series hope that they can bring to light the constant problems that the Emaus Association face for survival on a daily basis.

They have pledged to do all they can to help promote the new Emaus donation website www.euroamonth.com where people can make a small monthly donation via PayPal that will go direct to the Emaus Paypal account.

Any company that would like to make a regular monthly corporative donation to Emaus via www.euroamonth.com will have their company promoted alongside

the new high profile website and will also benefit from the 25% tax deduction on the declaration de la renta each year having donated to a registered non-profit association.

NO PLAYGROUND COMPENSATION

Altea City Council are refusing to pay damages to a 5 year old girl who was injured in the La Carrasca Park last year. The town hall have evaded responsibility for the accident the little girl suffered on October 27th 2014, she tripped on a rubber floor tile that was raised about two centimeters, she then hit her head on one of the metal arches that surround the play area.

The 5 year old had two deep cuts on her right cheek and brow. Her parents took her to the local hospital in Villajoyosa who assessed the injuries and transferred the girl to the general hospital in

NO MORE SUNBEDS AND UMBRELLAS

Rojuser is the company that provides the service of the sunbeds and umbrellas for the beaches in Altea and have been operating the service for nearly a year under a license which was never paid for.

The town hall have now terminated the license last week, although the

process w a s started back in February.

T h e council must now re-award the service but because it has taken so long to revoke the license we now do not know if there will be any

Rojuser have racked up a huge total of 45,000 euros in numerous fees since the start of their operation and several attempts

were made by the local government attempting to communicate with the company and find a solution but unfortunately no agreement was made.

We hope with the recent elections more can be done to solve the issue as both residents and visitors rely heavily on the service.

Are you a Brit enjoying life in Spain? Blakeway North, the team that made the hugely successful Benidorm ER series for Channel 5 are back in Benidorm to make a brand new documentary series.

They are looking for expats that have made the move to sunnier climes and are living life to the max – without breaking the bank. Have you come to retire or maybe set up a business here – how does it compare to the UK? Good move or do you regret it?

If you have a big personality with a story to tell get in touch with the production team: You can either email: curtis.leightonjones@ blakeway.tv or call 604 186 639 – there is no obligation to take part.

Something a lot of tourists have been waiting for is the use of a free Wi-Fi connection on the beaches of Benidorm.

The town hall is cooperating with a company to install the so-called "smartwifi" on a part of the Levante beach. The town hall considers “Smartwifi” as something ideal, as it’s free of charge.

By Fred Archer

This means that, a specialized company installs and maintains the WI-FI, while they register data of the Internet users in order to figure out which social network is the most used, what websites are visited, etc.

The first project will start this summer on the Levante Beach, to be exact between Torrejó, Calle Bilbao and the area around the mirador del Castillo, tourist’s favourite spots. Should this be a success then next year all

TOP FLOOR INFERNO

A spectacular fire broke out near the top of a building in Benidorm on Saturday afternoon.

The alarm was raised around 4pm on Saturday as the blaze engulfed the top floor of the Ipanema building on Avenida Dr. Orts Llorca.

According to sources of the Provincial Consortium for Fire Prevention and Extinction of Benidorm, the fire started on the nineteenth floor, which has been completely burned by flames.

The building was evacuated, as the intense smoke increased filling floors above and below com-

beaches in Benidorm will get free Wi-Fi. Benidorm took the city of Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca as an example for installing free wifi connections on beaches.

In particular, Mallorca has the longest beach with free Wi-Fi at 38 points over a length of 10km. Between May and November the Wi-Fi was used at least 300,000 times. Should free Wi-Fi get popular on the Levante beach then chances are that the project will also move to the city itself in the future.

BENIDORM WORKERS REUNION May 27th – June 2nd 2015

Lee and Helen owners of the Pig n’ Whistle held a milestone Birthday party last weekend for one of Benidorms longest standing members of the Benidorm Workers reunion.

Whilst enjoying their fifth reunion in Benidorm. Shirley Frost along with her friends and family celebrated her 60th birthday in style at “The Pig” where she drank as a young girl in the seventies, just as Benidorm was beginning to burst into a holiday resort and only had a few tiny bars and dirt tracks for roads.

The party spilled out into the street after Shirley's friend Sue got everyone in the party mood as she sang a few of Shirley's favorite tunes. Celebrations lasted into the early hours, as Shirley insisting to be the last one to leave as she didn’t want the celebrations to end!

Everyone had such a good time that Michael Britain one of the workers, suggested to throw one big birthday party so that the reunion workers could all celebrate their birthdays together as one on the same night. So Lee and Helen got prepared and held a Birthday Bash for everyone in “The Pig”. They organized all the music, food and games including adult pass the parcel, a

balloon modeling competition, jelly and ice cream shots. Everyone had a cracking night and look forward to doing another Big Birthday Bash next year.

This is the third Benidorm Workers reunion that Lee and Helen have welcomed which started in 2011 when one of the members Michael Britain decided to set up a thread on trip adviser as alias 'jettyman' to try and gather those together that worked in Benidorm in the seventies just as Benidorm was transforming itself in a holiday resort.

They now all meet in May each year and numbers grow and grow each year. Most of the workers worked in bars and were props, and if you stand close enough when they gather against the large stone pillars that have stood for over forty years, you can hear the nostalgic whispers of the stories that they tell, which always ends in belly aching laughter by them all.

The Pig n Whistle is very important to them as it has held its name and stature for over forty years Lee and Helen have ensured that the pig remains as it was when it first opened with its traditional large thick oak bar and wooden beams. The Benidorms Workers, all said “it still has the same feeling, as if they had just walked in there for the first time over forty years ago.”

After work they would all gather in their favorite locals such as Mars Bar, Ex bar, Melodica, Hawaii 5-0 and Bar Calou, all of which apart from the Mars Bar have now changed names and some are no more. This is why the pig is so important to the workers as they can come and sit in the same seats as they did many years ago listen to the same music, remain together, share stories and leave through the window yes…the window. This is how they did it back in the seventies and to this day still

vistacostablanca.com

leave in the same fashion.

Lee and Helen feel so very proud to have such important guests in there pub each year, as without these people who knows, “The Pig” may not have survived through the years, as it was these customers that after they had spent their time in Benidorm went back to the UK and spread the word and have continued to do so for forty years and still do to this day. Lee and Helen would like to give special thanks to all Shirley's friends and family who travelled to celebrate her milestone birthday and assisted the pig bar staff in decorating. They would also like to thank bee bee brewer for supplying the pig

balloons, Pasteleria Alakcons of the Indoor Market for supplying the cake and finally Linda Cotteral, Peter Skelton, Sue Parsons and Michael Britain whom organized Shirley's birthday to ensure Shirleys party went off with a bang. When you visit the old town Lee and Helen will be there to welcome you at the Pig n’ Whistle as you step back in time and listen to your favourite music in one of Benidorms oldest traditional British pubs, now serving

Last chance to visit Craft Market in Javea

will be set up with a variety of crafts: jewelry, designer clothing, toys, decorative lamps, sculptures, leather bags and belts, paintings and caricatures. The fair runs from 19 June till 13 September.

This coming Saturday the people that have set up their craft stalls every Saturday morning for the last five months in front of the Post Office (Correos) in Jávea will take a break till the autumn. In fact, most of the participants will set up their stalls in the summer market on the sea front of Jávea Port.

The craft people setting up in front of Correos feel fairly sure that the weekly fair will work in the coming years. There were not that many visitors during the first five months, but the ones that did come, came specifically to look for the genuine craft work that is the speciality of all Amata markets. Many came to order something special, which sometimes could be made on the spot, at other times could be collected one or two weeks later. The little market begins to be a known meeting point for people who are looking for individually made items and the artesans who make them.

In the summer this meeting point will be in the port of Jávea, on the sea front at the end of the Avenida Jaime I. This will be the third year

Javea U3A WAGS

So this Saturday, 30 May, the craft stalls will be for the last time on the Plaza Marina Alta (from 10am till 2 pm) and then, from 19 June you can see most of them in the Puerto every evening.

A TOTAL of 48 members attended the Javea U3A wine appreciation group’s May meeting at La Cocina restaurant in Javea Port.

WAGS group leader Geoff Woodward welcomed everyone and introduced Alan Hunton, who presented the wine tasting, supported by his wife Bronwyn..

Alan served up four Navarra wines – one rosado (rose) and three tintos (reds). He talked about the area of Navarra and the tasting notes of each wine.

His contribution was enthusiastically applauded when Geoff thanked him at the end of the presentation.

A Barbecue for Afters By Russell Ash

Lunch and much socialising then followed and the raffle tickets were pulled from the bag by Julie Robson. Geoff then talked about the forthcoming day trip to Bodegas Daniel Belda on June 18.

The Javea Players' Summer Show (Monday July 6 to Saturday July 11) offers a remarkably pleasant way to spend a summer's evening. What can be nicer than dining alfresco in a charming walled courtyard and then enjoying a hugely entertaining play in an intimate and very comfortable theatre just a few steps from your dining table?

Your dinner will again this year be served in the lovely Plaza Baix by the highly regarded Bar Imperial. A first course of patas bravas, jamon and queso, croquetas de

bacalao and enslada mixta; your choice of costilla de cerdo or grilled dorada; postre and a half bottle of wine.

Afters will be a barbecue in the garden of the Bulbins on the stage of the Casa de Cultura. No ordinary barbecue this. Teddy Bulbin would be mortified if you thought it was. He sees himself as being something of a barbecue king, a man who barbecues steaks to heavenly perfection. And, could any barbecue that is the creation of Alan Ayckbourn be ordinary? Of course it couldn't. A man who

has been knighted for delighting theatre audiences with his inventiveness and wit for more than fifty years doesn't do ordinary. He doesn't do one act plays often either – just four so far. So, this barbecue on the Casa de Cultura stage really is a bit special. It is highly entertaining too.

The Alan Ayckbourn barbecue is a frivolous comedy of fun, infidelity and food fights. It is called 'The Kidderminster Affair' because this Midland town is where the infidelities took place. In a Travelodge would you believe? Well,

where there's a will etc. The Bulbins and their guest and near neighbour, the Bottlecamps find little to laugh at as the secrets of the Kidderminster Travelodge are revealed but you will. Plenty.

Dinner in the Plaza Baix each evening is at 7 pm. The cost of your evening, dinner and this new Alan Ayckbourn play is just 15 euros and that includes a 1 euro donation to Cartitas and The Harvest Store. Book early on 96 646 2876 or boxofficejp@gmail.com

TEULADA MORAIRA

PEPE LA SAL GIVING BACK

Almost eight years ago now, Teulada Moraira Lions first mooted the idea of a food voucher scheme to go some way towards alleviating the very real hardship which the onset of the economic crisis inflicted on a good number of families living within the Teulada-Moraira area. Supermercados Pepe La Sal were quick to offer their assistance and support, without which it is unlikely that the scheme would ever have got off the ground.

That initial commitment from PLS has strengthened over the years to the extent where, as well as being integral to the success of T.M. Lions´ food voucher scheme, which last year was expanded to include Benitachell, this local, family run, supermarket chain regularly donates to T.M. Lions significant quantities of fresh and frozen foodstuffs which are nearing their "sell-by" dates. T.M. Lions, in turn, work closely with Caritas in Moraira to ensure that this food goes to where it is most needed.

their loyalty card customers the option of gifting their accumulated loyalty points to nominated charities, including T.M. Lions, instead of redeeming them against the cost of groceries in the usual way.

This initiative has proven so successful that T.M. Lions President, Colin Lilley and the Club´s PLS Liaison Officer, John Evans, were invited along to PLS´s flagship store on the Ctra. Moraira Calpe on 21st May to be presented with a cheque for €825.00, being the value of the

loyalty points which PLS customers had kindly gifted to T.M. Lions. At the same time, PLS also presented cheques to the President of La Cruz Roja; the Chairman of the Management Board of The Alzheimer Centre, Teulada; and a member of La Protectora d´Animales, Benissa. Congratulations and a big THANK YOU to Supermercados Pepe La Sal for being so committed to helping the communities within which it operates!

A great end to the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir's summer season in the area took place recently at the Salon de Actos, Teualda, with our special guests, L'Alfaz Canta, whose Spanish programme blended perfectly with the Choirs choice of music.

The audience was thrilled not only by the fine choral music but also by the captivating flamenco dancing on display. To the delight of the Choir and our nominated charity, Guardian Angels, over €1000 was

which emphasised the growing reputation of the choir in the area. More details on the choir on our website www.costablancamalevoicechoir. wikidot.com, or our facebook page ' Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir'.

So for me, it was to experience the fantastic offer of a three course menu for only 11.95â‚Ź.

The menu choice was enough to satisfy most people's taste and for me it was the homemade soup. I chose the tomato, although the other choices of onion soup and vegetable was also attractive. Our other starter choice was macaroni bolognese that had a generous portion of meaty sauce and was served with a separate bowl of grated parmesan cheese. Together with our starter, was a basket of crusty bread with creamy tangy aioli.

The choice of main course included Pizza of the day, a choice of pasta, fish and meats. I just had to go for the slow cooked shoulder of lamb served with chips and vegetables.

Our other choice was the Pizza of the day simply because we know so many of our readers love Pizza we really wanted to be able to tell you about our experience and we were pleased to say that the Pizza was thin and crispy, baked to perfection and

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE33 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Friendships reach new levels of trust and support, and relationships deepen and become more intimate, mainly due to the position of the moon. Even newcomers into your social circle will feel the love and acceptance. You come across as sociable and funny and you are.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Many of your expectations could be fulfilled this week, showing the world that you’re capable of achieving goals, even when the odds are stacked against you. Both friends and family admire your determination to make life better for everyone you love. Go Taurus. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

You’re entering a really busy time professionally, personally and socially, but as long as you remember that work comes first and the rest follows, you should have a fantastic blueprint for making the most of all worlds. Trust your intuition when it comes to love, but don’t push.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You start the week with a more positive attitude than you’ve had in a while, and your desire to succeed will be evident to one and all. You’re putting a lot of effort into work, rest and play and others appreciate your input. Continue this confident approach to make changes. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Your work will take a back seat this week as you try to figure out who and what is most important in your life, and where you should direct your energy. Although you prefer to work on your own, it may be wise to ask for help and support from someone you trust. Together we stand divided we fall remember.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

You’ve been having quite a taxing time where work is concerned, so you’ll be extremely grateful when responsibilities are removed from the equation and you can go back to pleasing yourself. As the week progresses you’ll have more and more freedom. Break free and enjoy.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

If you get the chance to take someone up on their offer to travel in the near future, grab it with both hands. There’s nothing better than going on an adventure and opening your mind to new places and new cultures. It’s a sociable time, but one where you need to watch your money.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

It feels as if others are making bigger and better strides than you, but that’s just because you’re allowing old paranoia to seep into your life. If you feel you’re lagging behind, then look at issues with a longer term perspective. Don’t believe everything you hear either. It’s all here say.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

Although you’re happy working on your own, you seem to get a lot more done where you’re working as a team. Make this a double whammy, as you can feather your own nest this week, but at the same time you can lift the spirit of others and make them more positive. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Be yourself and tell it as it is this week. Others may not be best pleased with you, so try to keep this tactful and diplomatic, however in the end you need to be honest and truthful, so someone somewhere is about to have their true character revealed. No one can say you’re underhand anyway.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

This coming week has a lot to offer you socially, and although you’re just as dedicated to the job at hand at work, your best times come after hours when you’re letting your hair down and having fun with friends and family. Get a few early nights as your energy wont last for ever.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

You’re showing a genuine desire to break free of restrictive situations, made all the more poignant because as the weather improves, the great outdoors looks more and more appealing. Content yourself by planning out a holiday trip for later in the year. Think sun, sea and sand.

2015 SUZUKI VITARA 1.6 DDIS REVIEW T h e L a t e s t B U Z Z f r o m t h e M o t o r i n g Wo r l d

Suzuki is in the midst of a bold assault on the UK market, and the Vitara is a key new model for the Japanese manufacturer. It joins the firm's bigger SCross in the small SUV class, pitched against rivals such as the Citroën C4 Cactus and Renault Captur.

It’s rather an added extra that is handy to have on the rare occasion you may find yourself with some rutted fields to cross.

What’s the 2015 Suzuki Vitara like inside?

We've already tried the Vitara in 1.6 petrol form on local roads, so now we're driving the 1.6 diesel on and off road in the UK. Does the Vitara still stand out in the small SUV class, and does it offer Suzuki's traditionally strong off-road ability for those of an adventurous disposition? What’s the 2015 Suzuki Vitara like to drive?

At 118bhp, the 1.6-litre diesel engine may not sound particularly powerful for a car this size, but it’s very well suited to the Vitara. It’s a bit rattly past 3000rpm but it'll easily haul four people up to motorway speeds and becomes more hushed once you’re up to speed.

The high-speed refinement elsewhere is disappointing, though; there's a lot of road noise and wind noise whipped up around those big door mirrors.

Paired with this 1.6-litre engine is a six-speed manual gearbox. Happily, the diesel's plentiful torque makes this Vitara flexible in gear, so you won’t have to be constantly shifting through the ratios when driving around town.

2WD comes as standard on the diesel, but you're able to upgrade to Suzuki’s 'ALLGRIP' all-wheel-drive system which can be added to range-topping SZ5 trim for an additional £1800.

The Vitara lags behind its rivals on interior quality, with lots of cheap-looking hard plastics on the dash, and the infotainment system isn’t particularly responsive or intuitive, which makes using it on the move challenging.

If you opt for the all-wheel-drive version, then you can select from three different driving modes; Auto, Sport and Snow/Mud. Sport mode noticeably sharpens up the throttle response and makes it a bit more eager to rev in gear which helps overtaking on faster B-roads.

Even if you do decide to go for the AWD version, economy figures remain impressive. The 2WD diesel version emits just 106g/km of CO2 and this only rises to 111g/km on the ALLGRIP.

Along with the all-wheel-drive option, the Vitara also gets some additional off-road equipment that many rivals don’t offer; however, it is only modestly capable off the beaten track.

The AWD system works well, as do features like Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control, but you would be ill advised to buy the car purely for its rugged capabilities.

For interior space, though, the Vitara outdoes many of its rivals. The 375-litre boot capacity beats that of the Citroën C4 Cactus, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke. It’s comfortable and spacious in the front, too, with great visibility forwards and backwards.

Two different trim levels are available on the diesel Vitara - SZ-T and SZ5. Rear privacy glass,17in silver painted alloy wheels and an infotainment with smartphone connectivity and sat-nav comes with SZ-T.

Forking out an extra £2500 for SZ5 gets you luxuries such as LED headlights, 17in polished alloys, suede seat fabric, keyless entry with start button, adaptive cruise control and a panoramic sunroof.

There’s also a lot of room for personalisation. You can choose between 10 body colours as well as a number of other exterior and interior features, like the colour of the front grille and an interior clock design.

RENEWAL OF EUROPEAN DRIVING LICENSES

EU driving licenses are valid for driving throughout the Spanish territory. The renewal of EU driving licenses requires the holder to undergo psychometric aptitude tests and be legally resident in Spain.

WHO NEEDS TO RENEW? The latest EU Directive 2006/126/CE states that holders of EU driving licenses that have expired or are about to expire need to renew their license.

Holders of EU driving licenses that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years for Group 1 (AM, A1, A2, A, B & BE) or valid for 5 years or more for Group 2 (BTP, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE) need to renew their license providing they have been legally resident in Spain for 2 years since 19th January 2013.

TWO ExAMPLES EU license holders that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years, who are legally resident in Spain before or up to 19th January 2013, should renew their driving license from 19th January 2015.

EU license holders that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years, who are legally resident in Spain since 6th June 2014, should renew their driving license from 6th June 2016.

HOW TO RENEW This can be done in the local office of the Spanish Traffic Department, by calling 060 and making an appointment, or online at www.dgt.es

DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED • Official application form (available from local Spanish Traffic Dept. or download from www.dgt.es) • Proof of identity and residency • EU driving license. Original and a photocopy • Results from psychometric aptitude tests from recognised and authorised centre • A recent photograph 32mm x 26mm

IN THE INTERESTS OF ROAD SAFETY These procedures have been implemented to comply with driving license regulations (Directive 2006/126/CE) in an effort to help increase road safety in general. Countries of the European Union have a single driving license for all 28 members, in a drive to harmonise the more than 110 different types of driving licenses currently in circulation.

Treating prickly heat With the end of Spring and the approach of Summer the heat and humidity is with us along with the problem of prickly heat! Prickly heat, also known as miliaria rubra, is an itchy rash of small, raised red spots that causes a stinging or prickling sensation on the skin.

Although prickly heat can occur in the winter, it’s at the height of the summer when it can be most troublesome. This is because it usually develops when a person sweats excessively and the body's sweat glands become blocked. The trapped sweat causes skin irritation and the characteristic heat rash.

Prickly heat can develop anywhere on the body, but it most commonly occurs on your face, neck, back, chest and thighs. The symptoms of prickly heat are usually worse in areas that are covered by clothing. This is because clothing can make you sweat and sometimes causes friction (rubbing).

The rash is made up of tiny spots or bumps that are surrounded by an area of red skin. The spots sometimes look like tiny blisters and can cause: • • •

mild swelling itching a stinging or intense prickling sensation

Obviously you are more at risk if you are in a hot, humid country (such as Spain in summer!) but the following factors will also increase your risk:

• illness and immobility – long periods of time spent in bed can make you sweat more • wearing too much clothing, particularly in the winter • sitting too close to a fire or heater • being overweight or obese – which is more likely to lead to excessive sweating

Babies and children are also more at risk of getting prickly heat, because their sweat glands are not fully developed.

Prickly heat is not a serious condition and rarely requires any specific treatment. The rash usually disappears after a few days. However, there are several things you can do to ease your symptoms:

• Cool your skin down with a cool bath or shower. This will sooth your skin and prevent further sweating • Wear loose cotton clothing in hot weather and avoid synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester • Drink plenty of fluids – avoid dehydration • Use calamine lotion to sooth areas that are most affected • Try a low strength hydrocortisone cream but avoid using on the face and do not use on babies • If you are particularly troubled consult your G.P. who may be able to prescribe antihistamines.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE 44

Last Weekend of the Premier League gave us plenty of excitement and drama.Newcastle's Jonas Guiterrez who survived the battle with Cancer scored one and created the other to make sure Newcastle survived as a Premier League Club whilst Hull City went through the Trap Door after only drawing 0-0 with Manchester United. Liverpool were hit for six by a rampant Stoke City and Leicester City finished their survival Season off in fine style by slamming Relegated Q.P.R. 5-1.

There was 2 Mid-Week Games and a full Premier League at the Weekend which contributed to the Alfaz Fantasy Football League 32 goals,10 clean sheets,34 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Manchester United's hot-headed Fellaini.

With this Season's Alfaz Fantasy Football League rapidly drawing to a close with only the F.A.Cup Final to come. Stoke City Fan Dennis's Team The Potters took over the Summit at Christmas and have been there ever since and they are worthy Winners of the 21st A.F.F.L..They have a 61 point advantage over Super Rhys and with only the Cup Final points to come I think we can safely say it's all over now! The jostling for 2nd,3rd and 4th place is on with only 4 points between Super Rhys,Lenny's Spreaders and Max & Paddy. Down at the other end of the Table Les's Team Have Not Got a Clue and Danny's Boro Man Dan are dead level on points.Les's Team have got 2 Arsenal Players in their line up Giroud & Rosicky while Dan's Team have just one Player Theo

ENGLAND HARTLEY MAY MISS WORLD CUP CONFIRM BAYLISS May 27th – June 2nd 2015

Dylan Hartley's participation in the World Cup has been plunged into grave doubt after the England hooker was cited for an unprovoked headbutt in his club's Aviva Premiership semi-final.

Hartley thrust his head into the face of opposite number Jamie George during an off-the-ball incident that unfolded in the moments after Northampton had scored a try through Tom Wood in their 29-24 defeat by Saracens at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday. George appeared to be unsighted at the time and the incident provoked an angry response from several Saracens players, but neither referee Greg Garner nor the television match official took action despite viewing replays.

Bayliss will replace Peter Moores as permanent head coach, having edged out his compatriot Jason Gillespie, who was seen as the early front-runner for the post. "It's an honour to be appointed England coach," said Bayliss.

He has also enjoyed great success in the T20 format, steering Sydney Sixers to Big Bash and Champions League success in 2012, and won the Indian Premier League with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014. There will be not be much of a honeymoon period for Bayliss, whose first task will be to regain the Ashes from Australia, who thrashed England 5-0 when the sides last met in 2013-14.

Gareth Bale expects to be 'back next season

Bale has endured a difficult second season at Real and has come in for criticism from the club’s fans. He was defended by former Real coach Carlo Ancelotti, per Reuters (via the Guardian), following more whistles during the

second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Juventus.

The player’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, per John Percy of the Daily Telegraph, has also recently insisted that Bale is not planning to leave,

But Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas feels Bale would be open to returning to the Premier League and that United should go allout to sign him. Nicholas said, per Sky Sports:

“If you want to make a serious statement, then you need to throw everything at getting Gareth Bale. He's the sort of player that can create a massive excite-

ment and help United make an immediate impact when they return to the Champions League. I think Bale would be open to returning to the Premier

Bale also confirmed his intention to be at Real next season via his official Twitter account.

Although the bookies favor ite is United, Chelsea are also apparently interested in the Welshman.

MERCEDES TAKE BLAME FOR BLUNDER and Romain Grosjean on lap 64 brought out the safety car.

Mercedes has apologised to Lewis Hamilton after a strategic error cost the reigning Formula 1 world champion victory in the Monaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton was cruising to what would have been his second success around the streets of the Principality until a crash involving Max Verstappen

Even though only 14 laps of the race remained at that stage, Hamilton was brought in to take on a fresh set of supersoft tyres, and he emerged not only behind Rosberg, but also Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari.

Although the duo were on cold and older tyres by the time the safety car pulled back in with eight laps remaining, there was no way past for Hamilton on his fresher rubber.

Asked 'what the hell hap-

pened there?', Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff replied: "What the hell happened there? That's exactly the right question. "The simple answer is we got the math, the calculation wrong. "We thought we had a gap which we didn't have when the safety car came out, and Lewis was behind the safety car. The calculation was simply wrong, hence what happened. In Monaco, you have no GPS and that makes the whole exercise more difficult. This is why we got it wrong when it switched from the virtual safety into the safety car. I went to see him in the scrum and I said 'apologies for that one, it goes on the team'. It was all good between us."
