OUT AND ABOUT

Dear Readers

A very warm welcome to this weeks ‘Buzz’ readers. I was waiting until this evening which is "Deadline Tuesday" to write my little piece. The reason being was I waiting to get as much up-to-date information as possible on the results of local elections. Why you might ask? Because for me, a local business and also the local residents including the large number of British Ex-Pats, it is very important to understand who will be in charge of the decisions that will effect us. I have talked to many British residents here in the local communities who decided to vote for the first time and you know, I actually felt proud to hear that our voices are actually being heard and counted. Our votes do count and in the case of majority of local town halls, the British Ex-Pat votes could make all the difference to the results. Read the full story inside and follow the ongoing news each week to see how things actually end up, after all, of the further negotiations that will unfold in the weeks to come when forming the new leadership. Well there are a few locals town halls that know where they stand and can carry on business as usual. They include Alfaz del Pi, La Nuica and Javier. I also wanted to say to our readers how amazed I was last week at the amount of people who took the time to congratulate me and the Buzz team on the acquisition of Heat FM radio station. Apart from some negative reports that were directed from our newspaper competitors, I can thank the sincere and loyal readers and advertisers for their ongoing support. It will be exciting times over the next few weeks as locals in Moraira see the new Weekly Buzz signs being erected at the Heat FM studio offices opposite Pepe La Sal supermarket and the announcement of our celebration party in next weeks issue. We will also be printing our summer Heat FM roadshow schedule, bringing the Costa Blanca's Number 1 radio station to you in your town. To remind you again it's 90.3 FM Altea to Benidorm and also on 106.8 Calpe to Denia. Tune in for our daily competitions and most of all great hit music. I welcome your feedback on both the newspaper and the radio shows that kick off each day with "The Big Breakfast" hosted by Shorty B from 8am. My direct email is marco@vistacostablanca.com so please let me know your suggestions and feedback. Aqua Natura is now open. So for a fantastic day out for the whole family which can be joined together with a visit on the same day at Terra Natura Animal Park located next door. Also take a look at page 3 for the very latest discount offer, 2x1 on tickets. You can also win free tickets every weekday morning by listening to our live competitions on HEAT FM. Please don't forget to visit Our web site at www.vistacostablanca.com where you can see all of the latest VISTA CARD news. Benidorm Cast raises over €13,000 for emaus June 3rd – June 9th 2015

vistacostablanca.com

With only one week to sort everything from the event venue, publicity and making sure all the popular Benidorm series actors and actresses had picked their favorite songs to sing it was thought that it had been left a little to late to expect a good turnout from the public on the night of the event.

Little did they know that by eight o'clock on the Friday evening of the event the 350 capacity tickets were sold out with a large queue at the Comedy Cluwaiting patiently all the way down the Avenida Philipines in Benidorm in the hope of catching a glimpse of their favorite celebrities form the number one TV series " Benidorm ".

Derren and Simon wanted to bring awareness to the Emaus association's new donation website www.euroamonth.com which was set up by the Emaus association bosses in the hope that they can create a long term independent income without having to rely on the dwindling government funding which is leaving Emaus in a very dangerous situation with the threat of closure a constant worry.

For Benidorm series fans it was a unique one off opportunity to meet and rub shoulders with many of the cast members and each one received a Solana “all inclusive” wristband! Many of the cast members turned out and took to the stage including Jake Canuso, Tony Maudsley, Tim Healy, Sherrie Hewson, Johnny Vegas, Julie Graham, Elsie Kelly, Danny Walters and Janine Duvitski who is Ambassador of ´Euro a Month´. As of Monday afternoon the official total raised was €13,039.52, an absolutely incredible sum thanks to the generosity of those that attended

of that Tiger Aspect donated €1000 and Derren made a significant personal contribution. Montserrat Fiter, President of the Emaus Association was overwhelmed by the turnout and support for the charity by the British, sadly the dire financial situation that EMAUS are in means that they a reliant on such donations. As of Monday morning, Montserrat confirmed that Emaus have gone into voluntary insolvency, meaning that they are protected from creditors yet will be able to continue functioning.

Emaus are owed several million by the Valencian Government and as a consequence, they have a debt to the Social Security and tax departments,on which 20% interest per MONTH is accrued. An administrator has been appointed for the day to day running of all the homes and any donations received are ring fenced for specific purposes.

The money raised on Friday will be used to pay for basic needs such as food, medicine and fuel to take the children to school and every cent will be accounted for, something which Montserrat wanted to assure everyone that gave so generously. Staff from the Emaus homes are staging a 24 hour protest outside Altea Town Hall – taking turns in small groups to highlight their plight that the Valencian Government have not paid the workers for over seven months.

Temperatures across the entire country, even the usually cooler northern regions, are set to soar with unseasonably warm weather expected this week.

Temperatures are expected to hit at least 35C according to the latest weather reports. While Spain is known for its sunny weather, temperatures are unseasonably high for this time of year thanks to a warm front moving over the country. Cocaine-stuffed pineapples seized

Spanish police seized 200 kilos (440 pounds) of cocaine found inside hollowed-out pineapples that arrived by ship from Central America.

The drug-stuffed fruit was found among 10 shipping containers filled with pineapples that arrived in the southern port of Algeciras, one of Europe's largest ports. The pineapples arrived from an undisclosed country in Central America and were en route to two companies, one based in Madrid and the other in Sant Quirze del Valles near Barcelona.

Among the thousands of fresh pineapples inside the containers, they found fruit that had been hollowed out and stuffed with drugs and then covered with a yellow wax that simulated the colour of

pineapple pulp," the statement said. Both companies were said to be run by Spanish nationals of Colombian origin. Three people were contained as part of their investigation and have not ruled out more arrests.

Last year, police in Algeciras seized 2.5 tonnes of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of pineapples arriving from Costa Rica - one of the biggest ever seizures of the drug in Spain. Smugglers have used increasingly ingenious methods to get the drug past Spanish customs. In recent years police have found cocaine inside a plaster cast encasing a man's broken leg, a wig, breast implants, as well as inside a 42-piece crockery set, consisting of bowls, plates and saucers.

Elaine Kaufman - Insurance Altea

Elaine Kaufman has been living in Spain for over 30 years after leaving the UK as a young lady wanting to see the World and find greener pastures. Settling in the Costa Blanca well in fact in and around Benidorm Elaine just seemed to fit into the Spanish way of life and most of all enjoyed the lifestyle and the Mediterranean culture.

Working in the Insurance industry for many years around the areas of the Costa Blanca it became evident that with the knowledge and contacts that Elaine had built up was soon to develop into her own business. With clients

in all areas across Spain it was in 2007 Eliane took over the form that she had been working for Insurance Altea and since then has not looked back. Striving in her chosen field of insurance in Spain and using the many years of knowledge to provide her clients with the best policies and prices ensuring that the right product is provided for the right reasons.

Elaine explained to me "the prices of insurance has dropped over the last few years well since the financial crisis the industry in general has just got more and more competitive. In some cases it has become so ridiculously cheap the loser is not just the insurance agent but in most cases the end user because the cheaper policies often do not provide the correct cover."

Even though Elaine has earned her success at the most difficult times of recession and the European crisis it has also been a time that has seen many agencies going out of business and therefore leaving the stronger and more versatile business to strive forward.

Elaine told me it's not all about work "I love my water sports and Kite Surfing

is my passion, I like to keep fit work out and enjoy a healthy life style". I asked Elaine where she would choose for a meal out? "Restaurant Sabor is one of my favourites although I also enjoy Difference. opposite the harbour of Altea".

Elaine loves the life in Spain and enjoys her work just as much, meeting all different people and speaking in English Spanish and German Elaine provides a complete insurance service for all international communities and residents. With this third position, the Altea Yacht

The female team has done a very good season, finishing with bronze at the national and silver at the autonomic, and at the same time maintaining the same athletes throughout the season and without strengthening the team with professionals, something that does occur in other clubs, who like to strengthen their team with national or Irish sportsmen.

BASE JUMPERS BACK IN BENIDORM June 3rd – June 9th 2015

vistacostablanca.com

By Irena Bodnarec

The eight B.A.S.E Jump Extreme World Championships are taking place in, or rather off the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala this weekend – Friday 5th and Saturday 6th June.

The Hotel Bali, located at the La Cala end of Benidorm is 160 metres tall with spectacular views of Benidorm - not that the jumpers will have much time to admire them. Base Jumping is an extreme sport where participants jump from fixed objects and use a parachute to break their fall ... as opposed to a body part!

BASE is an acronym that stands for the four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: Buildings, Antennas, S p a n s (bridges) and Earth (cliffs). BASE jumping grew out of skydiving but are made from much lower altitudes and the jump takes place close to the object serving as the jump platform. The main risk is that most BASE jumping venues have very small areas in which to land. After parachute deployment, a skydiver may have a 3 minute parachute ride to the ground whereas a BASE jumper will have only 10-15 seconds! Adrenaline junkies love the danger involved -

there's certainly no room for mistakes.

There will be a panel of judges that award marks for the seconds it takes to open the parachute, the opening angle, the accuracy of landing and the security throughout the jump.

On Friday, starting at 7am until 12 Noon the qualifying rounds will take place and then later, between 5pm and 8pm there will be some exhibition jumps. On Saturday between 7am and 8am the semifinals will take place and the finals straight after.

More demonstration jumps are scheduled between 9am - 1:30pm and then again from 4pm until the award presentations, which will take place at 6:30pm. All times are subject to change at short notice due to weather conditions.

Visually Impaired Can Now Swim Safely June 3rd – June 9th 2015

From this summer, the visually impaired will have a point where they can swim safely. The city of Benidorm will enable an acoustic swimming aid system to facilitate this activity to visually impaired people, located at the accessible beach point by of the Parque de Elche (Dove Park), Poniente beach. The device 'audioplaya' consists of the interaction of different elements with acoustic signals to allow users to move from the access of the beach to their spot and to use the toilet whenever they want, with the help of this device. This system includes different elements, such as a reception pole able to indicate the location of the toilets. Furthermore, users will be able to position their selves on the beach thanks to touch markers. There will be a beach pole which indicates the num-

ber and position of the poles in the sea and deliver a specific message to return safely along the poles.

Once in the sea, users will find beacons of information announcing both the number of poles and the distance to the beach, and even the depth of the water; an emergency pole connected to a lifeguard, who will receive emergency calls and information of the users; and each user will be wearing a clock which will be their

communication device with the lifeguard and with the beacons of information.

The Councilor of beaches, Pepe Marcet, indicated there will be three transmitting clocks. To implement this new system, the town hall has invested 11,000 euros while the Valencian Tourist Agency subsidized another 9,000 euros. The councilor has stressed that "it is a very important service to the accessible beach points. It is a good investment.”

NEW BLUE ZONE PARKING CAUSING PROBLEMS

The new contract of the blue zone parking is already creating countless problems, especially among the residents of the new blue zone areas where from Monday this week they have had to pay for parking. New parking meters require you to add your license plate, On Monday nobody knew exactly how the new machines worked and if you even had to pay, because during the first 15 days of operation the company would not hold sanctions against anyone who did not pay.

Throughout Monday and Tuesday you could see queues forming at the meters and people complaining about the lack of information provided by the operators about the new system.

U3A’S MONTHLY MEETING

THE guest speaker at Javea U3A’s May monthly meeting was, as always, in fine voice. Mike Evans, president and founder of the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir, entertained the audience at the Parador Hotel with an interesting insight into the history and current activities of the popular choir. He illustrated his presentation – entitled “St Leonards to the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir” - with photos as well as the intermittent echoes of enchanting choral music and singing. Mike explained that St Leonards Church in Chelsham, Surrey, was his inspiration and how, as an 11year-old Boy Scout, he joined the choir after being promised “vast amounts of money” to sing at services! He learned to read music and harmonise on a summer course at the Royal School of Choral Music at Addington Palace and later learned to play the cornet. He joined the RAF in 1961 and during his 38 years’ service he played in various bands and groups as well as a church choir.

In 1989 he moved to Kent and his love of male voice choir music blossomed as he joined Thanet Male Voice Choir and later sung in Huntingdon Male Voice Choir in Cambridgeshire. Mike moved to Spain (and Moraira) in 1999 and joined the Costa Barber Singers. But male voice choir singing was always his first love and in 2007 he started the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir along with musical director Heather Butcher. Since then the choir has gone from strength to strength and today it has 50 members and is about to release a CD. Mike told U3A members: “The ultimate for me is the sound of a male voice choir – the larger the choir, the deeper the sound.” He invited budding choristers to join the band and he assured anybody who might be interested: “You don’t have to be able to read music!” Mike was thanked for his informative speech by Javea U3A president Stephen Burke and presented with a bottle of wine …. no doubt to lubricate his precious vocal cords!

After the four-hour Saturday morning hike, the walkers

Property Price Reduction Lowest Since 2008

HOME sale prices fell by 0.11% in the first quarter of 2015 - but this is the lowest drop in value since the start of the financial crisis, when the bursting housing bubble led to property prices plummeting by an average of 30.4%. But as home values are still dropping slightly, it means now remains a good time to strike while the iron is hot and snap up one of the many bargains to be found in Spain.

three bedrooms needing a bit of cosmetic renovation starting at as little as €20,000 in some parts of the country, and the most expensive areas in Spain involving prices of several million for a top-quality villa with 'smart' features to make life easier, central heating and air-conditioning, cinemas, gyms and indoor and outdoor heated pools. In order to find out the average price per square metre, just under 92,600 valuations were carried out across the country, both mainland and islands.

The average price of a property stands at €1,457.90 per square metre, but the variations are vast, with flats of two or even

When inflation is borne in mind, properties have fallen in price on average by 36.3% since 2008, when the housing bubble had undeniably burst, although inflated values back then were partly due to banks and sellers over-pricing properties - future home values are likely to be more in line with reality and, in the long term, may rise to those of 2007 again or even more, but this will be a better gauge of what is

Whilst the UK suffers from a housing shortage nearing crisis point, Spain is in the opposite situation with a glut of homes for sale, making it a buyer's market and meaning purchasers have considerable bargaining power. And what was once an expensive luxury in 2007 has now become an excellent alternative to a pension fund - but unlike a traditional retirement plan, it is one that the investor can use for some memorable holidays in the meantime.

And compared with the final three months of 2014, when property values fell by 0.36%, figures show that once inflation has been taken into account, prices have actually grown in the last year by 0.9%.

affordable and what buyers are willing to pay Homes of less than five years old continue to hold their value better, with average prices of €1,723.80 per square metre, compared to older properties of €1,448.50 - but this is no indication of what will happen in the long term, since once the current excess of supply begins to dwindle, it is likely homes over five years old will also rise in value.

Seven of Spain's 17 autonomously-governed regions saw an increase in home prices year-on-year between the end of March 2014 and the end of March 2015. These were, in many cases, the most popular holiday destination regions - the Canary Islands saw a value increase of 3.56%, way ahead of its nearest rival Aragón, one of Spain's most heavily-frequented skiing destinations, with a rise of 1.9%.

Properties in Madrid went up by 1.67% and the Comunidad Valenciana, which includes the attractive and dynamic city of Valencia, the tourist belts of the Costa Blanca and the relatively undiscovered coastal resort areas in the province of

Castellón saw an overall increase of 0.69%.

For popular summer beach tourism areas, only Murcia saw an above-average fall in prices at 1.35%, the same as in the Spanish-owned city-provinces of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern coast of Morocco, with the other falls in home prices seen in Asturias, Castilla y León, Navarra, Galicia and the Basque Country. All of these are picturesque, verdant regions with dramatic scenery and a very 'northern European' feel, sometimes being likened in appearance to Switzerland, central France or Ireland, with mild summers and, in the case of Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country, greater overall wealth than in more southern areas.

Figures are not yet available for the second quarter of 2015, which ends on June 30, but the start of summer normally sees an increase in sale prices as this is the time when most potential buyers from abroad are more likely to search for their dream homes.

C O S TA B L A N CA S B B Q K I N G !

Hi I’m Stephen Grills! Each week i will be bringing you the very best BBQ recipies, tips, tricks and even a secret or two exclusive to the Weekly Buzz. With my help your BBQ will be all the hype among your friends and neighbours!

My Crispy Porchetta on the Rotisserie

Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 3 hours Difficulty rating: Intermediate I may talk a barbecue game, but when it comes to cooking pork on a rotisserie, you are at the top of your game. Nothing quite matches the simplicity and utter mastery of this Porchetta. What comes off the spit is a sight for sore eyes. The magic dust paste gives a nice addition to the roll, but the sheer awesomeness of the juicy, flavourful meat and the salty, crunchy rind makes this dish one to remember! Number of servings: 8 Ingredients: • 2 kg belly pork • 4 tablespoons of olive oil • 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar • 3 crushed garlic cloves • 6 tablespoons of magic dust • 2 teaspoons of salt (for rind) • Butchers string to tie • 1 disposable tin foil try • 1 bottle of Magners cider • 1 instant read thermometer Method • First In a small bowl, whisk together oil, garlic, vinegar and magic dust until a paste is formed.

• Lay pork belly on a cutting board skin-side down. Score flesh diagonally about every 6cm. Repeat in opposite direction, creating a diamond pattern. Spread garlic paste mixture evenly all over flesh

• Roll pork into a cylinder and tie tightly with butcher string about every 2cm and season with salt.

• Light the grill and back burners on a high heat. Place the foil pan under the centre grill and fill with some cider. Cover grill and allow preheating for 5 minutes. Run spit of the rotisserie through middle of pork and secure ends with rotisserie forks. Place on the rotisserie, cover, and cook at medium heat 160°C to 180°C until skin has darkened and crisped and pork registers 75°C when an instant read thermometer is inserted into the thickest part of the meat, about 3 hours. Remove from grill and let rest for 10 minutes. Remove spit, slice, and serve. Enjoy!

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE33 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Friendships reach new levels of trust and support, and relationships deepen and become more intimate, mainly due to the position of the moon. Even newcomers into your social circle will feel the love and acceptance. You come across as sociable and funny and you are.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Many of your expectations could be fulfilled this week, showing the world that you’re capable of achieving goals, even when the odds are stacked against you. Both friends and family admire your determination to make life better for everyone you love. Go Taurus. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

You’re entering a really busy time professionally, personally and socially, but as long as you remember that work comes first and the rest follows, you should have a fantastic blueprint for making the most of all worlds. Trust your intuition when it comes to love, but don’t push.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You start the week with a more positive attitude than you’ve had in a while, and your desire to succeed will be evident to one and all. You’re putting a lot of effort into work, rest and play and others appreciate your input. Continue this confident approach to make changes. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Your work will take a back seat this week as you try to figure out who and what is most important in your life, and where you should direct your energy. Although you prefer to work on your own, it may be wise to ask for help and support from someone you trust. Together we stand divided we fall remember.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

You’ve been having quite a taxing time where work is concerned, so you’ll be extremely grateful when responsibilities are removed from the equation and you can go back to pleasing yourself. As the week progresses you’ll have more and more freedom. Break free and enjoy.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

If you get the chance to take someone up on their offer to travel in the near future, grab it with both hands. There’s nothing better than going on an adventure and opening your mind to new places and new cultures. It’s a sociable time, but one where you need to watch your money.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

It feels as if others are making bigger and better strides than you, but that’s just because you’re allowing old paranoia to seep into your life. If you feel you’re lagging behind, then look at issues with a longer term perspective. Don’t believe everything you hear either. It’s all here say.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

Although you’re happy working on your own, you seem to get a lot more done where you’re working as a team. Make this a double whammy, as you can feather your own nest this week, but at the same time you can lift the spirit of others and make them more positive. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Be yourself and tell it as it is this week. Others may not be best pleased with you, so try to keep this tactful and diplomatic, however in the end you need to be honest and truthful, so someone somewhere is about to have their true character revealed. No one can say you’re underhand anyway.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

This coming week has a lot to offer you socially, and although you’re just as dedicated to the job at hand at work, your best times come after hours when you’re letting your hair down and having fun with friends and family. Get a few early nights as your energy wont last for ever.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

You’re showing a genuine desire to break free of restrictive situations, made all the more poignant because as the weather improves, the great outdoors looks more and more appealing. Content yourself by planning out a holiday trip for later in the year. Think sun, sea and sand.

Volkswagen's most efficient petrolengined Golf will go on sale this month. The BlueMotion TSI is powered by a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine and returns a claimed 65.7mpg with 99g/km of CO2.

Priced from £19,740, it's the first BlueMotion Golf to be powered by a petrol engine which it shares with the Volkswagen Up. The 115PS unit still gives decent performance with a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds, helped by 200Nm of torque. The standard gearbox is a six-speed manual while a seven-speed DSG is also available with no effect on fuel consumption.

To improve economy, the BlueMotion TSI has a 15mm lower ride height and special underfloor panels which improve aerodynamics. As with most eco-specials,

it also has low rolling resistance tyres although Volkswagen has dropped the cam chain for a toothed belt in order to reduce friction and there's no sare wheel only a tyre repair kit.

Vauxhall has revealed the new Astra which will go on sale this November priced from around £13,000 - similar to the current entry-level Astra.

Despite being smaller on the outside, the Astra has more rear legroom thanks to redesigned seats. Vauxhall is promising a high-quality interior with a much cleaner and less button-heavy look dominated by a large central touchscreen.

The weight reduction is as much as 200kg on some models - the same as two rugby players - helped by a lighter body shell. This will be good news for fuel economy and emissions with the 1.6 CDTi 'whisper diesel' expected to emit less than 90g/km of CO2.

The 1.6 CDTi will be the most popular engine choise and comes in different versions of either 110PS, 136PS or 160PS. Alongside this will be a new 1.4-litre Turbo petrol with 145PS, shared with the latest Corsa and Adam. The entry-level model will be powered by a 1.0 Ecotec Turbo engine with 105PS.

There are no specific details on pricing and specification yet but we do know that the new Astra will come with the same instrument display as the facelifted Corsa along with a new IntelliLink system that works with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

MATCH OF THE WEEK

SEPPING D OW N ! Sepp Blatter has resigned as Fifa President.

His resignation comes following last week’s revelations of corruption in the organisation. In declaring his exit, Blatter said an extraordinary Fifa congress had to be held ‘as soon as possible’.

He said: “What matters most to me is the institute of Fifa and football around the world.”

Last week, charges of racketeering and money laundering were made against multi-

ple people involved with the world football organisation.

A separate criminal investigation is also under way into the allocation of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Blatter told the news conference: “I will organise an extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president. I will not stand. I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. For many years we have called for reforms. But these are not sufficient.
