FIESTA FIRES HEAT UP SUMMER June 17th – June 23rd 2015

Continued from page one

It is a festivity with an ancient origin which combines magic rituals with fire, gunpowder, water and music. All designed to welcome the Summer.

The festivities program has a rich variety of events which include sports activities, street parades, musical performances, concerts, flower offerings, and much more. There are events for all ages and tastes, the running of the bulls and the “correfocs” (firecrackers parade) as well as the huge traditional fireworks display called the “Nit dels Focs”. The festivities conclude on the night of the 24th with the burning of the "Hoguera" monument and a spectacular music and fireworks display.

Correfocs Parade

FIESTAS IN JAVEA "Fogueres de Sant Joan" - Festival of San Juan continues all this week until 24 June, this popular fiesta enjoys the maximum participation from the town’s inhabitants who belong to neighbourhood associations called “peñas” and they all fill the streets to participate in all of the traditions.

The "Hogueras” make playful reference to current events in the town which pay homage to the ancestral tradition w h i c h involved burning old junk on the 23rd of June with the magical goal of purifying the body and soul prior to the Summer Solstice.

“Els focs de Sant Joan” (St. John’s Fires) which decorate the town’s roundabouts are small bonfires over which the citizens jump one by one, decorated with garlands and flower decorations which are burned once the last fires have been jumped. Finally on the 24th of June, the monuments are burned in celebration of St. John's holiday to conclude the festivities.

La Cala Bay near to Benidorm also hosts an annual event for Sant Joan attracting thousands of residents and tourists who dine on the beach in the Cove in the shortest night of the year. Councillor Indalecio Rodríguez said “all preparations are already ready and as in previous years, the City Council will offer a free bus service to residents in the urban area of Finestrat so the people from the residential areas can also enjoy this magical holiday. The party is a tradition, where families will dine at the

vistacostablanca.com

beach and this year, unlike others, the City Council will be responsible for distributing wood to make the bonfires.

The Councillor explained “the reason is for preventing pallets being brought to the beach and then nails are lost in the sand, the beach must be perfectly clean the next day and all debris cleared to avoid any chance of any beach bathers getting hurt. As a novelty this year also some flags in the bonfires be placed to mark them so then all the ash will be removed and avoid possible burns.

The free bus service leaves the Fonteta at 20:00 and 21:00 hours, so approximately fifteen minutes later buses collect the residents of the developments. The music will begin to start the evening at 22:00. The Department of Fiestas has hired an orchestra that will be play until midnight, then the fireworks will start and

the bravest will bathe in the sea and make a wish.

Other entertainment includes a show of aerial acrobats and puppets with live music until dawn. The mayor said that "I take this opportunity to invite all of our neighbours in the region to participate in this night of San Juan where there is fire, music and entertainment".

DEAD SHARK SHOCKS SWIMMERS By Michelle Simon

Last Sunday, the appearance of a dead shark on a beach in Denia surprised the first swimmers last Sunday morning.

the so-called 'suicide' of this type of animals, which is especially frequent at this time of year, which is the time when they travel the Spanish coast.

The shark found was a blue shark, a very common species in the Mediterranean, whose adult specimens can often reach an average length of 2.5 meters and weighs around 80 kilos.

Sometimes, the death of sharks and dolphins is due to the fact that they are stranded while approaching the shore in search of food.

The emergence of dead blue sharks on beaches is not an u n c o m m o n occurance.

Just like other marine life such as dolphins, blue sharks tend to towards the shore to die. It is the mysterious phenomenon of

WHALES SPOTTED IN DENIA June 17th – June 23rd 2015

Whales never fail us. Each year around these dates they are seen around the cape of Sant Antoni (Cabo de Sant Antoni), heading South. They come from the Ligurian Sea.

Last Friday, the crew of a ship that sailed the waters of Denia sighted two whales heading south towards the coast of Les Rotes. Fin whales are the second-largest species of whale, with a maximum length of about 75 feet (22m) in the Northern Hemisphere, and 85 feet (26m) in the Southern Hemisphere. Fin whales show mild sexual "dimorphism", with females measuring longer than males by 5-10%.

By Michelle Simon

and the Generalitat Valenciana, which was 500 meters away from its position, sighted the two copies, discovering another couple at less than half a mile from the previous. They came surprisingly close to the cape of Sant Antoni. Normally, these cetaceans swim at 20 and 30 miles from shore. For this reason, a study is being carried out for more than seven years, to find out why they

vistacostablanca.com

approach the coasts of Denia in their return path from the Ligurian Sea to the south. It has been verified that the whales approach between 200 and 1,000 meters from the coast of Denia until they reach the Cabo de Sant Antoni, the place where they change course and turn around quickly to be separated from the coast.

Year after year, the sightings of whales are more common, not only from boats, but also from the coast. It is more common to find people who have been able to enjoy the wonderful and exciting feeling to contemplate those giants of the seas, that can reach 24 meters in length.

BRITISH CONSUL PRAISES CHARITIES' WORK

The Coast Guard of the City of Denia

By Spencer Williams

Local expat charities are working hard to support both British and Spanish nationals, British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris saw in a day-long visit to the north of Alicante province this week. Mrs Morris spent a morning in the HELP centres in La Xara, and was impressed to see the work that the charity is doing to deliver respite and residential care for those in need.

In addition to the work that they do to help British citizens, HELP Marina Alta and other charities also fundraise for their local communities so that all nationalities can benefit. Recently, for example, HELP purchased hospital beds for local GP surgeries and provided funds to Fontilles care home.

Mrs Morris said: "The work that these charities carry out is really fantastic. Not only are HELP Marina Alta supporting British nationals who need help, they are also

7

fundraising for Spanish charities, such as the Fontilles care home. This is partnership in action – Brits supporting each other and also giving something back to the local Spanish community."

She added: "As always, all the local charities are crying out for volunteers, so I would really encourage anyone who has some spare time to get involved. It can be incredibly rewarding work to help others."

The Consul spent the rest of the day in the north of Alicante carrying out two focus groups, in Javea and Moraira. Britons attending the groups asked Mrs Morris to provide clearer and more up-to-date information on official websites. She encouraged British residents to follow the Consulate on Facebook (www.facebook/BritsLivingInSpain) and to look at www.gov.uk/living-in-spain when they have a question about common issues such as driving licences, residency and the padrón.

HASHISH FOUND BY SWIMMER By Michelle Simon

A foreign resident of Denia who likes to take a dip on the beach of Les Marines every morning, yesterday encountered a square floating object.

He brought it to the shore and found it suspicious. But, instead of notifying the Local Police, he took the bale, which weighed about 30 kilos, and dropped it of personally at the police station.

When he handed it over to the agents, it was still wet, which is a reason to

believe that it had been drifting in the sea for a long time. The police cut it open with a knife and found it was a bale of hashish. The drug was packed. The plastic that covered the bale even contained sea snails and sea algae. The local police gave the bale to the national police, who is now investigating whether it originates from some intercepted boat or some drug trafficker’s attempt to dump their cargo. In the area of the finding, no more floating bales have been found.

According to the club, the majority of the waste and rubbish was found on land, and comprised of "large amount of bottles, plastics, metal and remains of house hold furniture”.

Two teams of 50 volunteers were split up to carry out the cleaning work across the natural park and in the waters that surround it. The majority of volunteers made up the main

The club also clarified that "this highlights the lack of awareness". Among these remains, even a life raft and the structure of an electric toy car of large dimensions were found. They stressed that the results also showed that the seafloor was

cleaner, because during this search they only collected two small bags with plastic rubbish, some bottles and some fishing line, as a result of recent storms, explained the club.

The day ended with a snorkel route led by a professional diver for 25 children, who were taught to identify the species in the area and taught abiut the waste that accumulates in the sea.

HARLEY BIKERS DAY By Irena Bodnarec

The annual Harley Davidson Fun Day took place in Albir last Sunday – with a record turnout. The Eucalyptus Park was transformed into a bikers haven – with around 600 Harley Davidsons parked up, an incredible site. Each was gleaming and in pristine condition – with some costing the same price as a house, hardly surprising!

The Mayor – Vicente Arques came to admire the machines before they set off on a tour, escorted by 50 police outriders. You could hear them long before you actually saw them as they made their way through Albir and headed towards Benidorm, roaring along the Levante promenade to the surprise of sunbathing holidaymakers on the beach. Riding pillion were 19 ´Biker Babes´ who had fundraised for the privilege – a sum of €100 was asked but between them they managed to

raise an incredible €13,000, which was donated to the Emaus ´Make a Smile´ charity. Peter Emmett of the Costa Blanca España chapter organized the event and handed over a cheque to a delighted and tearful Lucy and Tony Grande on behalf of the charity. The Harley Bikers have made a number of donations to ´Make a Smile´ which endeavors to turn the Relleu home into a self sufficiency programme to help sustain other Emaus homes within the Costa Blanca.

Thousands came throughout the afternoon to admire and photograph the bikes, browse the stalls selling biker merchandise then chill and enjoy the sound of the live rock band with a can of beer in hand – a perfect end to the weekend. The date of next years fun day has yet to be confirmed by Peter Emmett said that it will definitely be in June.

clean Up reSUMeS By Spencer Williams

Five months have passed since it was put on the table the possibility that the public company tragsa, would continue the work to remove the stagnant water from the altea coastline following the bankruptcy of the company 'cyes', who left the work unfinished a year ago.

This week, Tragsa have taken over the works that will end the problem of odors and stagnant water in this area of the coastline.

'Cyes' began work to renovate the stagnant "lagoon" in Altea but paralyzed just a year ago when it entered bankruptcy, leaving the area mostly drained but still unfinished

with dirt and muck in the center and was left until now. The stoppage casued the lagoon to accumulate water again which turned stagnant bringing an awful odor to residents and visitors. The town hall tried to gain permission to open a way for water flow in and out to improve the situation but failed. The work will try to be finished as soon as possible even though the summer season is upon us. When completed the new local government will be held responsible for the upkeep and next phases to improve and complete the physical appearance of Alteas’ coastline.

€8.6 Billion Sent teMporary BeacH Service? HoMe By MigrantS By Spencer Williams

By Spencer Williams

Migrant workers in Spain sent €8.6 billion back to their families in their home countries last year, according to a new report. Spain was one of the top countries in Europe for the amount of money that migrant workers sent back home in remittances, according to a report published on Monday by the International Fund for

the summer season has already started, kids are finishing school and tourists are beginning to arrive yet altea is still unsure who will be looking after the beach service which provides sunbeds and parasols.

The City Council convened in mid-May and started a process to find a new company to provide and maintain the service. So far no company has been found, which has led to another meeting with the new town government, they are looking to award a 3 year contract for the company who takes on the service with the possibility of an extra year. The town council withdrew the license to, Rojuser, who were awarded the contract last year but failed to pay fees more than 45,000 euros.

It has now been said that if Rojuser pay "immediately" they will allow to restart renting hammocks and parasols on a temporary basis.

Agricultural Development (IFAD). The report said that this money usually covers "basic goods, such as food, clothing, shelter, medicine and education". Even though the amount of money sent by migrant workers to families outside of the country might seem high, these payments did not result in a "significant outflow of wealth".

BENIDORM’S NUMBER ONE FAN By Irena Bodnarec

It has to be said that Jason Green from Wellingborough in Hertfordshire can most probably take the title of number one fan of the hit ITV comedy series ´Benidorm´.

He has already been out three times this year to catch a glimpse of the filming and even bought his very understanding wife Mandy here for their tenth wedding anniversary back in April. But what makes Jason stand out from the crowd is his homage by way of body art. Not content with his first tattoo, a small one on his arm of the Benidorm logo and main cast signatures, his entire back is now all things Benidorm!

Tavern, the P i n k House and Solana logo, in addition to locations used for filming. He has spent thousands having the artwork done and estimates that it will take about another 40 hours to finish! On his return he will have the pool finished off – with sun loungers, swimmers and palm trees around the edge, the long legged Aqualandia bike man coloured silver and then another one on his right shoulder – possibly Benidorm Palace, which was used for the Christmas special.

He will then have signatures of the remaining cast and crew members inscribed on his side. Jason loves everything about the series and has managed to speak to Derren and several of the cast members on a number of occasions outside shot locations. Back home he has even recreated a ´Bar Solana´ in his garden shed, although not had many opportunities to use it yet.

On one trip last year he was unable to get a direct flight, so flew from Stansted to Bilbao then onto Barcelona and finally to Alicante – and was only here for two nights!

Understandably he runs his own business so is able to reorganize his work calendar in order to fulfill his passion. I feel sure that we´ll see Jason back here again in the not too distant future.

A NIGHT OUT AT ST JAMES TAVERN

The Sol Pelicanos pool, Morgans

A night out in Benidorm could not be missed, especially when the invitation was to join Brett and Loraine at the St James Tavern in Calle Finestrat, just up from the Calle Gerona at the Old Town End.

Brett and Loraine are new owners of the St James Tavern, I say new, but really I only say this because the previous owners had been known by visitors to the town for over ten years, so in comparison Brett and Loraine are new, but have now enjoyed their first year getting to know the returning guests and many locals as well. Benidorm being a place for all sorts of holiday makers and party goers and famous for being a non-stop location for live entertainment seemed to fit in with the new owners plans.

A nice friendly pub with great home cooked traditional food, but that's not all that's on offer. St James Tavern

My partner who chose the steak with pepper sauce, so we decided to share the food so that we could get a taste of each other’s. The baby rack of ribs filled the plate and the meat was falling off the bone. Served with BBQ sauce on the side the ribs were sweet and tangy and the extra sauce was ideal for dipping the homemade chips and onion rings.

also offers a unique side of entertainment, with a weekly Friday Night Extravaganza with "Dusty Crack" a comedy drag show that takes your breath away..... Literally in some people's eyes.

The show starts at 10pm so there is plenty of time for food and drinks first. The cocktails seemed to be very popular with the girls sipping away on Sex on the Beach. For me it was a nice cool beer and the rack of ribs.

The fillet steak was tender and moist served with pea’s, cherry tomatoes and chips. This really was an ideal Friday night supper that we both really enjoyed. The girls sitting next to us were also enjoying a snack with their drinks in preparation of a long night ahead. Chip butties, Chicken Nuggets a selection of great finger food that accompanied the cool cocktails.

In anticipation of what was to come with a name such as "Dusty Crack" it

all made sense as the show got underway. The costume changing and energetic dancing was non-stop and really got the crowd going, including a little bit of audience participation. I was just glad it

wasn't me who got picked out... Go along to meet Brett and Loraine serving food all day including breakfast, also from this week they will be hosting a Northern Soul night every Saturday.

NEW MAYOR FOR BENIDORM June 17th – June 23rd 2015

By Irena Bodnarec

Toni Pérez of the Partido Popular (PP) party was inaugurated as the new Mayor of Benidorm on Saturday, ousting Agustin Navarro of the PSOE. The swearing in ceremony took place in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall in front of invited guests and press. Two large screens – one in the auditorium and another in the foyer broadcast to those that could not fit in. Elected councillors of all the parties were sworn in during a short ceremony and welcomed to take their place on the council benches.

But it will be far from easy as he governs what is the smallest minority council ever seen in the town.

Pérez won only 8 out of a possible 25 seats and has declined – at this point at least, to go into coalition with any other parties to gain a ruling majority. It will certainly be a challenge for him and his party to pass any new legislatures or by-laws

as they would need the support of another five councilors from other political parties. The PSOE Socialists have 7 seats but are technically the polar opposite of the PP, so they would need to rely on the other peripheral parties such as CBM, Liberales, Cuidadanos and Compromis.

Leader of the Cuidadanos for Benidorm p a r t y , Leopoldo Bernabeu was snubbed by many of the councilors, including Agustin Navarro who turned his back on him during his swearing in ceremony.

Leopoldo Bernabeu broke the campaign rules by broadcasting his manifesto on Saturday prior to the election on what is meant to be a day of reflection.

By law no campaigning can take place the day before election Sunday and all the other parties have denounced him – the case is now pending.

Last Saturday, David García Cooke, from TONY’S EXCHANGE in the Indoor Market, one of British Benidorm Associations administrators, celebrated his 40th birthday.

He decided to use this occasion to organise a Charity Fundraiser for the local animal shelters. 70 people attended the event in Albir at the ‘Mahou Cerveceria’ and guests were asked to donate a prize for a raffle as

opposed to a birthday gift. Through raffle ticket sales and other donations a fabulous 635€ was raised during the evening.

FLIRT DARLING 16

CHARITY ORGANISATIONS

What advice do you give an old school friend when she tells you she thinks her husband is having an affair?

Penny Bottlecamp, who with her husband, Reggie are the barbecue guests of their friends and neighbours, Lottie and Teddy Bulbin, condenses her advice to just two words, “Flirt darling”. Join them at their barbecue at Javea's Casa de Cultura one evening between Monday July 6 and Saturday July 11 and enjoy the fun when Penny's advice is taken to heart.

Penny and Lottie have been close friends since their days at St Olaf's where Penny stood up for Lottie when she was being bullied. So, when Lottie finds in the pocket of a suit her husband, Teddy, has given her to take to the cleaners a bill from the Kidderminster Travelodge for a double room, the first person she talks to about it is Penny. Penny is very angry, “Angry for you darling” and she recommends positive action. “Start up a love affair of you own darling. Give him a taste of what it's like to be on the receiving end. Flirt darling with the first man that gives you a second glance.”

June 17th – June 23rd 2015

As you might expect in a play by Alan Ayckbourn, that first man turns out to be Penny's husband, Reggie and for your amusement and delight the Bulbin's barbecue becomes a comedy of infidelity. You'll enjoy it hugely. Before you do so, enjoy dining alfresco in Javea's Old Town's charming courtyard, the Plaza Baix. There the Bar Imperial will serve you a selection of tapas followed by your choice of Costilla de Cerdo or Grilled Dorada, postre and a half bottle of wine. A few steps from your table will take you into the Casa de Cultura there to enjoy Lindsay Johnson's production of 'The Kidderminster Affair'. Dinner is at 7pm. The cost of this very agreeable way to spend a summer's evening – alfresco dinner, Alan Ayckbourn's play and a one euro donation to the very worthy local charities, Caritas and The Harvest Store – is just 15 euros.

U3A SUMMER BALL 1 U3A RAFTING TRIP By Ian Rogerson - Publicity Officer inside with a sumptuous threecourse dinner with wine. Entertainment was provided by ABBA Elite, reckoned to be one of the world-renowned group’s leading tribute bands. And there was no stopping U3A members as they crowded the small dance floor to get in the swing to the sounds of hits such as Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Mamma Mia and Waterloo!

MORE than 200 members of Javea U3A danced the night away to the music of ABBA on Friday night.

They were dressed up to the nines for their big annual summer ball, held at Salones Carrasco in Javea – and it was particularly special this year because they were celebrating the association’s 10th anniversary. Formed in 2005, the popular organisation now has 1,200 members enjoying a host of activities provided by 50 groups.

The 10th anniversary ball began with a Cava reception with canapes in glorious sunshine on the terrace outside and continued

There was also a raffle in aid of Javea U3A’s charity of the year, Help of Denia and Marina Alta, which raised €703.50.

President Stephen Burke thanked Carrasco for hosting the event, ABBA Elite for their performance and especially U3A members for attending and making the night such a tremendous success.

the end everyone was exhilarated, but very wet and tired.

The Seguro River was higher than last year and much faster flowing, which required energetic paddling from all and there was much excitement when the boats bubbled across several small rapids. At the penultimate stop, several of the group requested a swim.

The guides then took the intrepid party a little further up river, where they all bravely, launched themselves into the water. The flow of the river was so fast they couldn't attempt to swim but their cries of excitement were heard before they came floating round the bend at great speed. Fortunately, the guides were ahead of them, as stopping was certainly not an easy task! At

SECOND CLASS PASSANGERS! CALPE

To use the same train, as in this case line 9 of the TRAM that unites Benidorm with Denia, is much more difficult in some populations than in others.

The neighbours who must use this means of transport in Calpe, Benissa, Gata or Teulada have become "second-class passengers", according to the Union Ferroviario-Intersindical, because in these stations tickets, bonus trip tickets or TAT (modality for pensionists or a large family), cannot be purchased. THE CRAFT MARKETS THIRD YEAR On Friday 19 June a motley crowd of crafts people will set up their humble stalls in the square by the sea front at the end of Avenida Jaime I in the port (Puerto) of Jávea.

This is the third year running that Amata (the regional craft association) joins forces with the local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front with a craft fair. A real craft fair, with real craft workers who make what they sell and hope to sell what they make. Not for nothing has Amata chosen the slogan "Artesanía de Autor" which means that what you see is made by the man or woman on the stall - nothing imported, nothing

made by friends or from a small factory.

The stalls can vary from week to week but you will find stalls with leather bags, children's shoes, leather belts, original lamps from recycled material or from artfully formed wire, rag dolls, wooden toys and puppets, jewelry from silver, copper, silk, ceramics, macramé or

SAIL BOAT RUNS AGROUND By Spencer Williams

A sailboat sporting a Danish Flag run aground onto a beach last weekend on to the Portet de Moraira.

The only person on board was a 76 year old Danish man who had dropped anchor to have a rest, however the tide pushed the boat onto the beach which got stuck in the sand.

The man had set sail from the marina of Almerimar, Almeria, his next stop was the Balearics on the way to Sardinia, he did not notice that once he had lowered his anchor it was not hooked properly and dragged along the seabed until the boat finally run aground.

It has been reported the boat was towed back to sea on Monday and the boat did not suffer any serious damage.

SPANISH PROPERTY MARKET STILL ON A ROLLER COASTER

The roller coaster nature of the Spanish property market recovery is laid bare with the latest data on prices showing that the slowdown has not yet gone, nor has the difference between official figures and those from real estate firms.

The latest figures from valuations company Tinsa show that at a national level property prices are still falling although there are regions where they are rising while the latest data from the Housing Department show prices falling slightly.

The Tinsa data for May, based on the company’s own valuations, shows that average national house prices were down 3.6% year on year but this global figure hides considerable regional variations.

For example the biggest price falls are in provincial capitals and large cities with a

decline of 4.9%, while house prices on the Mediterranean coast were down 2.3% and in the Balearics and Canaries there was a fall of 2.1%.

However, year on year house prices on the coast are up 1.4% compared to May 2014 but are still down 48.8% compared to the peak of the market and according to Tinsa the national average peak to present fall is 42.1%.

According to the government figures the average price for Spanish property fell a 0.11% in the first three months of this year, the smallest quarterly decline since

the economic crisis began and down from a fall of 0.36% in the last quarter of 2014. This takes the average property price to €1,458 per square meter and this is down 36.3%, adjusting for inflation, since the peak of the market in 2008 when it was €2,100 per square metre. A regional breakdown of the figures shows that seven autonomous regions registered year on year price growth led by the Canaries up by 3.56%, Aragon up 1.9%, Madrid up 1.67%, the Valencian Community up 0.69%, Extremadura up 0.57%, the Balearics up 0.1% and Andalusia up 0.05%.

The rest of Spain is still seeing annual price decreases. In Asturias prices have fallen by 6.53 year on year, by 3.72% in Castilla-León, by 3.15% in Navarra, by 2.29% in Galicia, and by 1.47% in the Basque Country. According to the Housing Price Index (HPI) published by the National Statistics Institute, the price of homes rose by 1.5% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period of 2014, which is below the 1.8% price increase recorded at the end of 2014.

But the index has recorded four consecutive quarters of year on year increases following six years of declines. The index also shows that prices for new homes are rising faster than others. Second hand homes say a rise of 1.1% in the first quarter of the year while new home prices rose by 4%.

S te p h e n G r i l l s - M y G r i l l e d F l at B r e a d s Preparation time: 30 minutes (plus time to prove) Cooking time: 10 minutes Difficulty rating: Easy Don’t be afraid -- mix by hand!

Some bread is soft and chewy, while others have a firm, tight crumb structure, like brioche. This is determined by the length of mixing time. For my flatbread, we want the first texture, so roll your sleeves up and turn off you mobile phones!.

utes of kneading, it’s a workout! If this doesn't appeal to you, you can mix the dough on low speed in an electric mixer fitted with the dough hook until the rough mass forms, about 1 to 2 minutes. Raise the speed to medium and mix until a smooth ball forms around the hook, about 3 to 4 minutes.

• Want to make yours ahead? No problem. Despite some recipes that may argue otherwise, bread dough can be made ahead of time. Just let the dough

Ingredients

Number of servings: 12 • 1 kg Strong 00 Bread Flour • 1 tablespoon salt • 2 tablespoons sugar • 650 ml tepid water

Method

• First of all empty the bag of flout onto a clean surface and make a large well, sprinkle the sugar and salt onto the flour and crumble the yeast into the middle, then slowly add the tepid water little by little mixing with your hand in the shape of a fork

• Knead, knead and knead. Kneading is where that gluten structure starts to form. Lightly flour your work surface and knead the dough by first pushing down towards the table and then away from your body, then folding the dough back over itself under your hand and giving it a quarter turn. Repeat this movement until the dough smooth’s out. When it’s totally smooth and very pliable, it's ready, this will take about 10 to 15 min-

rise in the refrigerator, covered, overnight. A slow rise like this also gives the dough more flavors, because the yeast will eat the sugars in the dough more slowly. So really, it’s a win-win. Let the dough sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before shaping and grilling.

• Grill on a high heat turning every 4 to 5 minutes. For finishing, I bash the flat breads with the back of my knife and drizzle with different oils, like in this case, garlic with basil and smoked paprika with sun dried tomatoes. Then to finish sprinkle some powdered parmesan and you’re ready to serve! Enjoy!

Reviewed 21 May 2015 Had an excellent meal here last night. I had a stripped steak with parmesan and tomato salad. The wife had a sirloin steak with mushroom sauce. It was a struggle to clear my plate only because the helping was so big. One of the most enjoyable meals in years. The place was very busy with locals as well as tourists. The service was still great and nothing was too much trouble. This was our second visit of the week the first was just as good when we visited with friends.

“Out Of This World!!”

Reviewed 18 May 2015 Just finished a gorgeous meal at Duetto. We been meaning to try every time we been in Benidorm and finally did! We both had lasagne with garlic bread and a portion of chips. And all I can say is WOW! All the food was fresh bar the chips but that was not an issue at all. The lasagne was cooked in a wood stove oven, big portion and gorgeous filling with the sauce and meat. The pasta was fresh aswell and the garlic bread. We finished off with a big slab of cheesecake which was amazing! For drinks we had 2 bottles of mahou. All this for 37€, which was certainly a bargain! We've both already said we will be returning before we go home. Customer service is on point too. Do not give this a miss when in Benidorm!!

“Inviting Terrace”

Reviewed 7 June 2015 Called here on Wednesday just for a relaxing drink as the terrace looked very inviting with curtains around to block the sun. Enjoyed our drinks on the settees watching what was going on. Next week we are going for a steak as the menu looked very nice.

“What An Excellent Restaurant”

Reviewed 4 June 2015 Really a spot on restaurant, its nothing like how it use to be inside and is now a lovely open plan restaurant inside with a view in to the kitchen. We ate off the set menu with lots of choice, i had a fillet steak that came with two sauces included in the price. Portion size was very good and steak cooked just right backed up with the service you are use to in his premium bar a few doors down. People should go out there way to try the food here the quality is easy up there with places like Casa Toni, or Ca pepe. Don’t keep driving past saying we should try there sometime, you will go and def go back. Couldn’t fault a single thing was a great meal and night

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE33 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Your mind is focused and your thinking innovative, so you may find others will be more drawn to you than ever today. They see you as a leader in you field and would no whatever it takes to be allowed on your journey. If only it were this easy when it comes to love and passion.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Now that you’ve got all aspects of your life on a structured positive journey, you’ll do everything in your power to ensure it stays like that. Maybe it’s best to let you high standards slip a tiny bit when it comes to love and passion though. It should be more spontaneous don’t you think?

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Now that your life is less held back and restricted, you’ll manage to move ahead at a much more productive pace, and you’ll start today the way you mean to go on. Your confidence is building up again and you know you’re the best in your field so make sure your salary reflect this.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You know there will be certain times in your life where you need to think outside the box, go out on a limb or take a chance, but today is not one of those times, so don’t allow yourself to be convinced otherwise, or you’ll regret it in the weeks to come. Stick rigidly to your own decisions

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Crossed lines in communication and off hand remarks in the home zone could be caused by everyone having vastly different agendas today. Why not state your case over what you’re doing and allot the time you need to do so. The same applies to everyone else in the equation.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Even if you don’t feel 100% confident in decisions you’ve made, you need to convince others that you are. Make your move in professional or personal situations by being bold and innovative and others wont think to question you. Stutter and stammer and they will. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

It’s just as well that you have luck on your side today as it’ll carry you through any situations difficult or not. If you’ve been avoiding practical issues, this is your best day to finally tackle them. If you can’t do things yourself, others will be happy to help you, and you’ll be grateful for that.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Your persuasive powers are so strong this week you’re positively purring with satisfaction. If there’s something you want others to do, then get cracking. They can’t seem to resist you. Tackle jobs you’re good at first as others will see how talented and competent you are SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

It’s all very well struggling against the odds, but the best thing you could do is to be patient and wait until things take a turn for the better. Yes its annoying and yes its frustrating, but you’ll only make it worse if you take matters into your own hands. All comes to he who waits.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Not everyone will come up with the goods when you want them, but do you see that as them being difficult on purpose, or do you see it as them not being able to cope with the tasks they’ve been given? It’s time to ask if they’re up for the task at hand. If not, get someone else. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Specific objectives in the personal arena are what you’ve been focusing on for quite some time now, but it seems your imagination has led you a merry dance and what you’ve now got is nothing like what you wanted. You’re bored and time is dragging. Make a quick sharp exit.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

There’s no point trying to talk your way out of it anymore. You’re bad at keeping your finances in the black, and now need to take steps to rectify that. Look at your income and expenditure and you’ll soon discover where the problems lie. You’ll need to curb extravagance.

Mr Bean Sells McLaren F1

British actor Rowan Atkinson, most famous for playing hapless comedy character Mr Bean, has sold his McLaren F1 for £8 million - Costing £634,500 including VAT when bought new in 1997, the 240mph supercar covered over 41,000 miles in the hands of the screen star, including two significant crashes.

Atkinson is a well-known petrolhead and has made headlines with his McLaren F1 on two occasions, most recently in 2011 when involved in a huge shunt which he was lucky to walk away from unscathed.

The McLaren spent a year undergoing extensive repairs after Atkinson crashed it in August 2011.

The screen star was driving his F1 supercar when it spun around several times, ran into a tree and a lamppost and caught fire on the A605 in Haddon, Cambridgeshire.

Atkinson's repair bill was said to be close to £1 million - the highest ever recorded in Britain at the time, and undertaken by McLaren's Special Operations division.

Atkinson, also known for roles in Blackadder and Not the Nine O'Clock News, showed off his driving skills on the BBC's popular driving show Top Gear, where he finished second on their 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' segment. He has also attended F1 races in the past, most memorably the 2011 Indian Grand Prix when FOM cameras caught a Mr Bean-esque response to a crash between Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Renault has revealed the pricing and Massa as he watched on from the specification for its hotly awaited Clio McLaren garage. Are your symptoms your enemy? IS IT REALLY A BRIGHT IDEA? Are your symptoms your true PROBLEM? Should you be looking for a way to cover up your Whenever we see famous American stars on TV or at symptoms? If you don Ě t have any symptoms, are you the cinema they nearly all seem to have that "gleamhealthy? The answer to all these questions is NO. ing" smile as if they have been in one of those adverts for the latest miracle tooth paste. Symptoms can be a result of direct damage to the body’s tissues (pain from a fall), or our organism expressing itself You know the type. "Just brush with this supergel paste working for survival (vomiting due to toxic ingestion). A and in one week you will have that Hollywood smile". It is body working badly transmits its unhealthy state through perhaps this stereotyping that makes many of us wish for the nervous system. The purpose of medication is to elim- the pure white smile. Some of you may remember a film inate the symptoms. In effect, this is a way to mask the "Austin Powers" where the main English character had disease and silence the alarm (symptom), allowing the yellowing teeth. This, although a comedy, showed how disease to continue to advance even though we don Ě t the US view the English mouth. have any symptoms. Often the symptoms are truly necessary, as they are a first class mechanism of protection for the body. An example is fever of a viral component. The body temperature is raised in order to kill the virus as quickly as possible and to heal the body. Another example is inflammation which stops us from moving the damaged tissues and facilitate their healing, as in the case of swelling after a sprain. Some people who start chiropractic care suffer what is called “retracingâ€?. Old lesions return or the presenting condition becomes more acute. It all passes very quickly and it is important that is not seen as a relapse, and is recognized as a normal process in the recuperation of health.

In disease process symptoms are the last things to appear. The healing process requires TIME. Time is necessary to replace abnormal or sick cells with healthy cells. Therefore, a person can continue to have symptoms even though they have begun chiropractic care and healthy cells have begun to regenerate correctly. These symptoms could be the body expressing that there are still a number of abnormal tissue cells to be replaced. Therefore more time is required for a complete regeneration of healthy tissue cells. Chiropractic adjustments increase life messages to the body and increase each person Ě s potential for good health by allowing the body to regenerate and function correctly. Some of the most common conditions that respond really well to Chiropractic treatments are Arthritis, Backache, Headaches, Stomachache and much more.

What is it that causes tooth stains in the first place? In all honesty we p r o b a b l y already know that tea coffee and other foods and drinks stain the teeth but if the teeth had been brushed and flossed as we all know we should many of these stains would be avoided or at least reduced. Smoking produces heavy stains on teeth and it is fairly simple to know, just by looking, whether someone has been a smoker for a long time.

There are many products on the market now promising The Whiter Smile. In the USA an estimated 1.4 million dollars is spent each year on over the counter teeth whitening products. That is without taking into account the money spent at dental practices. The question is are these products healthy? It may whiten the teeth but, for example, can the bleach used damage the gums?

So what processes are available and what are the pros and cons of them? In next weeks issue, we will be talking to local dentist Dr. Cardo Canega. He will be looking at the different procedures available and giving his expert opinion on ways to proceed if you want to alter the look of your smile.

Dr. Cardo Canegas practice is situated at Cami de la Monja, 11, La Nucia just off the CV70 between roundabouts 1 and 2. Your first consultation is free with Dr. Canega. Tel 96 62 36 130

TOP SUMMER TIPS!

With record temperatures around the country, it is important to keep your dogs in mind when it comes to keeping cool. Here are some tips for beating the summer heat! Exercise your dog early in the morning or late at night.

is the time of year to back off on exercise intensity. Watch for signs of dehydration. Dogs can't sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot, and it may appear a little pale. If you lift its skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place.

Keep your dog hydrated! Different dogs have different needs when battling the heat. Keep in mind that darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher risk for dehydration. Carry a bottle of water when going on a walk with your dog. Better yet have your dog carry it for you in a backpack or a vest! The water in the bottles will keep the dog cooler and also give the dog a sense of purpose.

Find innovative ways to cool your dog. Don't have air conditioning? No problem! Find a spot in the shade and set up a kiddie pool. Lay down a wet towel for your dog to lie on. Or simply set up a fan in front of a pan of ice. At the Dog Psychology Center, we have sprinklers that spray the dogs with a gentle mist of water.

Dogs cool from the bottom up. Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when spraying it with water. A wet towel does more good on the bottom of your dog than when laid on the top of its coat.

Let your dog dig! Your dog may resort to finding his own way to avoid the heat. Dog in nature dig their dens not out of frustration but to find food, hide, give birth--or keep cool! If it's possible, locate a shady area where it's okay for your dog to dig.

Let your dog check the weather. Dogs don't have the Weather Channel, so they don't know why they are being denied a long walk for the day. Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it is too hot, too wet, or too cold to go on a long walk. Instinctually, the dog will understand that it has to shorten its walk, or simply come back inside where it's safe.

Since these are the cooler parts of the day, this will make the walk more comfortable for both you and your dog. I'm a believer in vigorous exercise for healthy dogs, but this

Never leave your dog in a parked car. The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it is in the shade. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car due to passersby or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely. On longer trips, make sure you have water for the dog and keep the AC running.

Benidorm Dog Homing – Facebook page

Use hot weather as an excuse to swim more often! The best activity you can do in summertime or hot weather is swimming. Instead of walking the dog, take the dog on a swim! If you hold on and allow your dog to take you around the pool, it becomes a powerful bonding experience for the two of you, similar to the walk.

TAX TRIAL GETS ‘MESSI’

A Spanish court has ruled that claiming ignorance about his finances is no defense against charges of evading more than €4m in taxes

Claiming ignorance doesn’t seem to be working for Lionel Messi this time around. After his newest appeal was rejected, it looks like the four-time World Player of the Year and Barcelona star will have to go to court in Spain to face tax evasion charges.

According to the BBC, Messi and his father, Jorge, are accused of withholding earnings between 2007 and 2009 by funneling income through companies in Belize and Uruguay responsible for selling the soccer star’s image rights. The contracts involved companies like Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola and Procter and Gamble. The case against them claims they’ve defrauded the government of over €4m.

His previous appeal, thrown out by a Spanish judge last October, was based on the argument that Messi was not responsible for managing his finances. According to El Pais, Messi’s defense team argued he “never devoted a minute of his life to reading, studying or analyzing” the contracts. Instead, his father was primarily responsible for the player’s books.

A similar appeal was made this time around. But Spanish courts don’t think Messi’s professed ignorance is a good enough reason to drop the charges against him, the BBC reports.

Nadal's dismal defeat against the world number 79 is the latest in a growing list of lacklustre performances in a troubled 2015 campaign for the former world No 1.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner was beaten at the French Open for only the second time in his glittering career when Novak Djokovic won their quarterfinal clash in Paris.

As a result, Nadal's ranking has plunged to 10th – his lowest position for a decade – and to add insult to injury he will now head to Wimbledon, which gets underway later this month, with renewed questions about a decline that hit another low with this setback in west London.

Nadal tried to downplay the significance of the result, saying: "It's a loss. I didn't play bad at all and fought until the end. Games on grass are like this.

Austrian GP preview

After a brief trip across the Atlantic, F1 returns to Europe and the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg for the Austrian Grand Prix.

The race returned to the F1 calendar last year for the first time since 2003 and in addition to the grand prix, the circuit will also host a two-day test on the following Tuesday and Wednesday.

ROYAL ASCOT

BRITAINS MOST VALUABLE RACE MEETING Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable race meeting held, attracting many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for more than £5.5milllion in prize money.

The event has revelaled some of the finest and famous thoroughbreds. Black Caviar, Frankel, Yeats – all are Royal Ascot winners turned household names.

In 2013, The Queen watched her horse, Estimate, triumph in the Gold Cup. A dedi-

cated racehorse owner, she has attended every Royal Meeting during her reign and the Royal Procession is always an iconic moment to herald the start of every raceday, which attracts viewers from all over the world regardless of their interest in horse racing.

The event started on Tuesday 16th June, however there is still plenty more action to come with the Commenwealth and Gold Cup to come.

The Mercedes were actually out qualified by both Williams cars however, the Silver Arrows struck back in the race, however, with Nico Rosberg leading home Lewis Hamilton. Pirelli will bring the two softest

tyres in their range to Austria – the red-marked supersoft and the yellow-banded soft.

The Italian firm say the circuit "features several sharp corners, meaning that the average speed is relatively low. Coupled with unpredictable weather conditions, the soft and supersoft is well suited to the track characteristics".

After victory in Canada Lewis Hamilton remains favourite for the race victory The race will start 1pm UK time Sunday (2pm local) lasting 71 laps, covering 4.326 km..
