Dear Readers

At last it’s here! Cooler weather and the month of September is now upon us. With loads of Brits returning from their holidays out of Spain coming back to seek out the last of the summer before settling down here for a quieter autumn. I really haven’t appreciated how many thousands of people actually leave their homes in Spain for a cooler climate during July and August. The belief from most people is that the summer in Spain is absolutely (chock-a-block) full with packed beaches as well as the problems that come with this silly season, like no parking and bigger queues. However I have found that this is a total misconception about the Brits in Spain. It seems that the summer period does bring the busier months but in reality it’s not TOO busy! It is only the busier months for the thousands of tourists from within Spain, France, Italy, and other European countries. Most of us know some of our neighbours, friends and family that have taken the summer out of Spain which has an impact each year on local businesses having less clients which means that many are forced to close up for the summer, to try and make savings on staff costs. Other businesses that try to ride it out actually end up losing a lot of money. I actually enjoy the cooler nights and I am looking forward to having the company of the long-term winter stayers as well as friends and family back around. Seeing the local bars and restaurants buzzing with the massive footfall of local ex-pats, and for September the three big Heat FM events raising money for charity here in the Costa Blanca. Our next event is taking place on Friday 11h September at “Buena Vista” in Altea for a Charity Cocktail Party starting at 7pm. Then we have the International Charities Fair at El Cisne N332 Benidorm on Sunday 20th and finally on Saturday 26th at Monroes in Pedreguer for an ‘End of Summer’ BBQ from 6pm. All three events are with Heat FM’s live radio broadcast with Ian Oogly and JB. Oh and not forgetting the action packed weekends of Premier league football, plus the arrival of the long awaited Rugby World Cup that starts on Friday 18th September when England face Fiji in the opening match. There are more exciting plans for the Buzz Media Group with the opening of new Heat FM radio studios in Calpe and Benidorm plus the exciting news to be made public very soon for the new Heat FM show line up. See all the latest news about the EMAUS charity events as well as loads of local news packed out in this week’s newspaper. Tune in to the one and only Heat FM Spain on 106.8 from Calpe to Javea & 90.3 from Altea to Benidorm or listen live via our website www.heatfmspain.es Please don’t forget that if you are involved in any organisation or charity you can get in touch with us at any time. Also you can tell us about any local events, charity fundraising or if you know of any summer BBQ’s going on please tell us about it! email buzz@ vistacostablanca.com

How Many Cheats Are Near You?

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

From Front Page...With this information readily available, Spanish company Technologica, created an interactive map which shows the location of over 50,000 locations around the world where users are living. By clicking on the different dots you can see the ratio of men to women and the amount of users in the municipality, you can zoom in and choose any area that has atleast 10 registered users.. The North Costa Blanca (Marina Baixa and Marina Alta) has over 5000 registered users with the highest percentage of users in Benidorm with 1915 people followed by Denia with 1236 beating other areas by a wide margin. Javea had 398 people,

Villajoyosa 474, Altea 392, Calpe 274, Alfaz 216 are among the locations with the next highest amount of memebrs. The site allows users to sign up for free and see profiles of local members, with information ranging from the type of relationship the person is looking for (“whatever excites me” or “cyber affair” are some of the options.) The site also highlights selected members that live in the area you indicate on your profile. Free members can’t initiate chats or emails

but they can receive and respond to messages; sending initial emails to contacts will cost you credits which are purchased through Ashley Madison with real money. The dating site opened in 2001, with the slogan, “Life is short. Take a lover.”

Photo Fine Scrapped

Spanish officials have scrapped an €800 fine against a woman for posting a picture on Facebook of an illegally-parked police car after admitting the image did not contravene a controversial security law. The woman who received a €800 fine for posting a picture of a police car in a disabled bay and was condemned under the “gag law” has seen her fine scrapped! The “gag law” the legislation, which came into force earlier this year, bars unauthorised use of police images for security reasons, and unauthorised protests in public. The picture was posted online last month, which showed a police car parked in a disabled parking space in a town in south-eastern Alicante. The police said the officers were rushing to stop vandals in a nearby park, and quickly filed a complaint against the woman. However the central government’s representative in Alicante shelved the complaint, scrapping the €800, a statement released said it had “nothing to do with the Citizens Security Law, it was just a picture of a vehicle that was published”.

English Teaching Group by SPENCER WILLIAMS

The Voluntary English Teaching Group is a group of around 30 volunteers who have been successfully teaching English to unemployed residents of Javea for the past 5 years. Classes are held every morning from 9.30 to 12.00 at the Escola d’Adults FPA Xábia, Calle Ramon Llido, situated in Javea old town. The next course starts on October 19 and finishes at Easter. We are now looking for a Coordinator

for the conversation classes, which are held on Wednesday mornings. This is a key role, and knowledge of teaching, or teaching English as a foreign language, and of Spanish, would be a huge advantage. The Coordinator will liaise with the teachers and assistant teachers of the grammar classes (which are held Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) and will be responsible for planning and coordinating the conversation classes,

which are taught at 5 different levels to reflect the grammar classes. Although we have filled most of the teaching and assistant teaching posts, we also have one vacancy for an assistant teacher to work Fridays at an intermediate level, and for conversation teachers to work on Wednesdays. For these roles, Spanish is not essential. Over the past 5 years, we have provided English lessons, support and encour-

News agement to 500 students, made friends, deepened our understanding of the place we live, and drawn huge amounts of satisfaction from knowing that our work is appreciated and valued. If you are interested in finding out more about these roles, please contact Tanya Sedgwick attanyasedg@gmail.com or on 605 780 689.

Spain Has Third Largest Pot-ulation

Spain is now the 3rd largest cannabis smoking nation overtaking the Netherlands as a marijuana smoking nation. “Recovery Brands”, which operates addiction rehab and recovery websites have created maps revealing Spain third largest in the world for cannabis use and being one of the cheapest places of the drug per gram in Europe, so is this a contributing factor? Catalonia and the Basque Country have become the mainland for cannabis clubs however, such clubs are on the rise all across Spain, in the newspaper El Pais last week it was reported that 40 cannabis associations have opened in Madrid since 2011. Spain has been dubbed the new Amsterdam of Europe with the rise in these legal members-only cannabis which take advantage of Spain’s drug laws that forbid trafficking the substance or smoking it in public, but allow marijuana

"

to be grown and consumed for private use. While the buying or selling of cannabis is a criminal offence in Spain, growing it on private property for private consumption is legal. Back in December a new study by Spain’s “Foundation for Help Against Drug Addiction” (Fad) showed that A total of 52 percent of Spaniards were in favour of legalizing the sale and private consumption of cannabis Spain has people smoking cannabis than tobacco and even more young people are smoking it compared to other countries in Europe.

‘The Extra Chromosome Means Nothing’

by SPENCER WILLIAMS Louis Killick is a six-year-old boy with Down syndrome who has taken to the catwalk and shown the world that he won’t let his disability hold him back. Louis from Caterham, Surrey shocked the modeling world by taking part in his very first catwalk show even though his parents were worried about other peo-

ple’s reactions. The show went so well that he is now set to appear on billboards after being signed to modeling agency ‘Models of Diversity’. Louis’ parents Anita and Jason got in contact with “The Weekly Buzz” news desk while on holiday in Javea.

They have been so proud of Louis that they have wanted to share his story with the whole world and we were so happy to hear his story that we just could not refuse. Anita, 43, was put in touch with agency Models of Diversity, who campaign for a more diverse range of models in the fashion industry and founder Angel Sinclair was won over by Louis’ cheeky charm. ‘It was a lovely surprise when Angel chose Louis to take part in a catwalk show” Anita explained, “People look at me, then look at Louis and I can tell they’re judging us. I often want to say something but it’s not worth it. The extra chromosome means nothing, Louis is just Louis.” Anita, who is also mum to Hannah, 15, Nathan, 12, and 14-month-old Hayden

said she couldn’t be more proud of him and is calling on more agencies to recruit ‘children who are different’. Louis’ has been enjoying a well-deserved holiday with his 3 other siblings and parents at a villa near El Tosalet, his father Jason said “we have friends and relatives in Moraira and Javea so this seemed a natural choice. We have rented a villa which is lovely and it gives Louis and the whole family some time to relax and have fun.” Down syndrome is a developmental disorder caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 (which is why the disorder is also called “trisomy 21”). Having an extra copy of this chromosome means that individuals have three copies of each of its genes instead of two, making it difficult for cells to properly control how much protein is made. Producing too much or too little protein can have serious consequences. Genes on chromosome 21 that specifically contribute to the various symptoms of Down syndrome are now being identified before birth. The team at The Weekly Buzz wish Louis the very best in his future career as a model and hope that other children and parents can use his story to give them the confidence and not let any disabilities hold them back.

Sate Office May Be Moved The town hall finally wants to move the SATE office to Benidorm Rincón de Loix to bring it closer to tourists who visit the city for their holidays The current SATE office, is located in the old town next to the tourist office, and is not on street level making it difficult for some people to access, if you’re a victim of crime this is the place you currently have to report to, here you can talk to the consulate, cancel credit cards etc., use internet

facilities and make free telephone calls. They hope to move the office into the Rincon de Loix where the other tourist office is however it will not be big enough so they would have to construct a whole new building. The mayor said that location is “unbeatable” and more accessible, as it is located at street level. The proposal is currently being discussed between building developers and the police to ensure all

areas would be covered if the proposal is to go through, the new building could cost 200,000€ which would come out of next year’s budget. The Facebook group “British Benidorm” have been campaigning for the SATE office to be moved for years, this is defiantly a win for the tourist population as more people stay here on their holidays than anywhere else in the town. Benidorm Colour Race

Benidorm’s ‘Colour Race’ takes place this week on Sunday, September 6 from 11am. The ‘Colour Race’ is pretty much self-explanatory, sometimes known as ‘Colour Runs’ you run a course just like any other race however, everyone starts the race dressed in white and along the way you get sprayed, showered, and completely plastered with different coloured powders. This year the race will start at the SSMM Plaza with the course 5km in length, and the finish line

is back at the start The event is sure to be a great success as with like most things in Spain the more extravagant and flamboyant the better! Back in June Sports and Festival councillor, Juan Ramón Martinez said: “In a city where athletic events such as the Hotel Bali steps contest and the half marathon are so popular, the Colour Race is sure to appeal.” Carlos Mateo who has organized the event explained more “Every kilometre the runners will pass under an arch of colour where they will be sprayed by around 10 tonnes of safe and biodegradable powdered colours. Thus runners begin the test dressed in white but end it looking very different.”

Pink Explosion! Las Salinas also known as the salt marshes in English, is perhaps most famous for its colonies of flamingos. These lovely and majestic creatures attract a lot of attention from everyone who visits the place; professional bird watchers, locals and tourists as well, who, like the birds, return each year to enjoy the amazing and unique surroundings that Las Salinas offers. Calpes iconic salt marshes (Salinas) provide a fantastic treat to visitors during the

spring months, attracting birds from all over Europe as they make their migratory journeys. This year we have been especially lucky as the beautiful flamingos have stuck around, the town hall has praised the salt marshes for providing all the nessecery nutrition for all kinds of species and despite a drop in the water levels earlier this year the marshes are exploding with life. Apart from the flamingos there is also ample opportunity to spot a

wide variety of different species of birds, marine life and animals, all of which make Las Salinas their home. Currently there are over 300 flamingos settled in the Salinas most of the birds are from the Camargue in France but this year have been attracted from other areas. More than 500 species of birds migrate year after year to escape winter, among the flamingos there are also black headed gulls, moorhens herons and plovers.

Ancient Gate Uncovered A gate which residents and travellers used to use to access the Pobla d’Ifach during the 18th century has been discovered. The tenth season of excavations of the ancient medieval town of Calpe, have uncovered this iconic gateway which is in excellently preserved condition. The gate reaches more than six meters high in some parts but the findings this summer do not end there: the excavation team have also exposed a building which would have been used to guard the city. The building has solid masonry mud brick walls, keeping it in its excellent condition. Inside they found many pieces of carved stonework including twelve carved corbels that supported the roof deck, as well as the remains of two divided windows.

The latest findings of the campaign were announced during a visit by the director of the excavations, Jose Luis Menendez and mayor of Alicante Calpe,

Cesar Sanchez, who pledged to promote this heritage as a tourist and cultural site to the municipality.

Javea Players-‘Crocodiles in Cream’ ‘Crocodiles in Cream’, which opens at the Javea Players’ Studio Theatre next Monday,September 7, for a five night run, is a portrait of Lewis Carroll which is at times moving and often hilarious and has won world-wide critical acclaim for its author, David Horlock and for the actor who so brilliantly plays Carroll, Kevin Moore. Lewis Carroll was the pen name Charles Dodgson used for his children’s books. He published his writings on mathematics, logic, parliamentary elections and ‘delightfully diverting mind-benders’ under his own name. Dodgson was an extremely talented photographer and established himself as the finest photographer of children of his time. He also photographed many of the celebrities of his era including Alfred Tennyson, Samuel Wilberforce, Michael Faraday, Ellen Terry and Prince Leopold. Although Dodgson enjoyed the company of many lively and diverse friends among them actresses, poets, judges and British royals, he especially enjoyed the company of children. Alice Liddell recalls how she and her sisters, Lorina and Edith “...used to sit on a big sofa on each side of him, while he told us stories, illustrating them by pencil or ink

STOMPERS SELL-OUT by SPENCER WILLIAMS

The ever-popular classic New Orleans jazz band, The Bourbon Street Stompers, from Essen in Germany will be visiting Spain again this autumn, and Concerts Costa Blanca has advised that there are already very few seats left for the performance at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira on Friday 30 October even though there has not yet been any advertising other than to those on the CCB mailing list. So if you have not booked, now is the time to do so, and the box office details are given below. In view of the tremendous demand for tickets, the organisers are considering a matinee performance on the same day, so if you do not manage to get a ticket for the evening performance, by ringing 96 574 9023, you can reserve a place for the matinee if it does in fact come to fruition. The Stompers, now in their 22nd year, were first brought to the Costa Blanca by local resident, Norman Dunnington, in 2009. They were given a standing ovation by the capacity audience of almost 1000 at the Palau in Altea, and in the subsequent years they have played at Teulada, Torrevieja, Alicante and Valencia, all to rapturous reviews. This year, in addition to playing again at Teulada, they will make their debut at the magnificent Auditorium de Palma de Mallorca on Sunday 1 November. Two years ago Concerts Costa Blanca had the brilliant idea of inviting a special guest vocalist to

sing with the band. He was Joshua Stewart, a powerful tenor who had just graduated from the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and who had performed at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira the year before. Joshua was born in New Orleans, and sang with jazz bands there before being recruited by the Curtis Institute and being trained as an opera singer. He returned by popular request to accompany the Stompers again last year, and both he and the band are looking forward to making it three in a row this year. Admission for the Teulada concert on Friday 30 October is 17 eu., which includes a cava reception. Auditori de Teulada Moraira box office details: Wednesday-Saturday : 11:00h to 13:00h and 18:00h to 20:00h.

Or book at the Ayuntamiento de Teulada or the Espai La Senieta theatre in Moraira: Monday - Friday : 09:00h to 15:00h. Or book online: www.instanticket.es Tel: 902 444 300.

Mayor Recieves Honory Membership To TM Lions

President of the Lions Club of Teulada Moraira, David Platt, together with Nico Dekkers, welcomed the mayor, Carlos Linares, to a club meeting where he became an honorary member of the Club last week. Linares took the opportunity to say a few words of thanks for the opportunity to be part of the Teulada Moraira Lions,

and thanked them for their community service that they have carried out in the town for more than 20 years. The Teulada Moraira Lions Club, which dates back to 1994, has 32 members, 6 associate members and 3 prospective members. The group actively fundraises for various welfare and community projects to help those in need.

Monroes Pedreguer

served every day offering roast meats and fresh vegetables, all served with homemade freshly baked Yorkshire puddings and served straight from the oven. The Weekly Buzz review team went along to enjoy the ambiance of dining outside with a well shaded patio area that made it very comfortable whilst taking the time to indulge in a perfect Sunday roast. The carvery section is laid out with a hot counter containing a full choice of fresh vegetables, mash and roast

much s you want including the vegetables and potatoes, it’s easy to put a little too much on your plate. My excuse is that the serving spoons are very large!” Don’t forget that Monroes also make their own

desserts including chocolate brownies, apple crumble and banoffee pie. Our food correspondent says “my favorite part of the meal was the apple

potatoes, Yorkshire pudding as well as wonderfully thick gravy. Our food correspondent said, “I was given a generous portion of hand carved meats sliced and served onto my plate and it looked amazing. The beef was rare in the center which is exactly as I like it and the roast pork was so tender it fell apart. I helped myself to the vegetables, mash potatoes and the gravy. I have to admit I could not actually finish everything that was on my plate, but this wasn’t as easy as you might think given how tasty the food was! Because you can serve yourself as

crumble with custard which I enjoyed immensely”. A super menu deal is on offer: 3-course Carvery for just 9.95€ and there is a choice of starters, and dessert or you can choose a 2-course menu for just 8.95€. Monroes are also extremely popular for their ‘Fishy Fridays’ with cod, chips and peas for only 6.75€ including a homemade dessert. Also

‘Pie Night’ is every Monday from 6pm and cost only 6.75€ including a dessert or 5.25€ for the main course only. See the menu in full online at www.monroescarvery.com and don’t forget to make a reservation to avoid disappointment. You can enjoy the fantastic roast carvery every day throughout the week. 6.50€ 2 course or 9.95 3 course (except Sunday). Monroes will be hosting an end of Summer BBQ on Saturday 26th September from 6pm with a live radio broadcast with Heat FM sponsored by Specsavers store in Javea. This event is in aid of EMAUS children’s charity and there will be a raffle and competitions for everyone to join in and enjoy. Tickets are available to buy only 12€ or 6€ for children from both Monroes restaurants. Call for reservations - 965 576 1731 - Avda Garrofer, Monte Pedreguer, Pedreguer.

Levis Showboat

Avenida Doctor Severo Ochoa 7 Benidorm, 03503, Benidorm

500g new potatoes 1 onion, preferably white

Method

1. Scrape the potatoes or

leave the skins on, if you prefer. Cut them into thick slices. Chop the onion. 2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan, add the potatoes and onion and stew gently, partially covered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the potatoes are softened. Strain the potatoes and onions through a colander into a large bowl (set the strained oil aside). 3. Beat the eggs separately, then stir into the potatoes with the parsley and plenty of salt and pepper. Heat a little of the strained oil in a smaller pan. Tip everything into the pan and cook on a moderate heat, using a spatula to shape the omelette into a cushion.

150ml extra-virgin olive oil 3 tbsp chopped flatleaf parsley 6 eggs

4. When almost set, invert

on a plate and slide back into the pan and cook a few more minutes. Invert twice more, cooking the omelette briefly each time and pressing the edges to keep the cushion shape. Slide on to a plate and cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Reviewed 23 August 2015 This restaurant is still one of the best in Calpe. Went last night and were not disappointed. Owner told us about problems earlier in the week and explained that nearly 50 people all turned up more or less at the same time despite reservations made for different times during the evening hence the delays. Last night for us was as good as it has always been. Food and service exceptional. The best prawn cocktail salad with a hint of curry in the sauce and amazing fish and ribs. As for the atmosphere this is first class with the restaurant having a great ambience.

VIRGO

Don’t feel bad about giving yourself a pat on the back. You totally deserve it. Just don’t take it to extremes, as you have been known to be a tad egotistical on occasion in the past. You have the energy to move mountains, not just for yourself but for others too.

Your confidence has taken a minor knock over something trivial, but don’t dwell on it. The sooner you can get over it and onto the next project, the sooner you’ll rebuild your shaken confidence. Get your mind out of the past. See the future.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th)

CAPRICORN

Work and career have taken an upward leap, and the horizon is starting to look a lot more rosy from where you’re standing. Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back, but don’t linger too long. There’s still work to be done. Rest at the weekend.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb 19th)

AQUARIUS

You’re scared to even say it, but your business life and personal life are both going well. Long may it continue I say. Professional developments may stray off course at the end of the week, but it’s nothing you can’t handle, so don’t panic.

PISCES (Feb 20th-March 20th)

PISCES

It would be wise to put certain plans on hold for now, just in case there’s a chance you could get something wrong. If you battle on, it’ll be like swimming against the tide, and we all know how hard that can be. Relationships move to the next level at the weekend.

Jaguar XF 2015 - review The Stunning new Jaguar XF 2015

the previous XF and only 75kg heavier than the smaller XE.

Construction - Inside you get a completely updated control centre, under a similar ‘Riva hoop’ to that of the XE that curves over the instruments and dash-top from the doors and makes a boring part of any car interior into an interesting one.

Interior of th e Jaguar XF 20 15

The new 2015 Jaguar XF has a hard act to follow. The original XF in almost every incarnation, from the 4.2 V8, through the 3.0V6 diesel and 5.0 litre V8s, to the fire-breathing 550PS XFRS. The new car is shorter, yet sits on a longer wheelbase, so is better balanced and roomier inside. The styling is more integrated. According to head of design, Ian Callum, they started at the front, took a long time to get that absolutely right, then added the new longer wheelbase, and built the car from there. It has a pronounced high shoulder running front to back just

below the window line, and a short swage line from the side air-vent that disappears into the door, like an airplane contrail, giving an impression of speed even when the car is standing still. Contrail Swage Line - Unlike the previous steel-bodied XF, the new car is mostly aluminium pressings and castings, with magnesium boxed sections at the front and under the windscreen, boron steel B pillars and cabin cage, and steel subframes for the engine and front and rear suspension. It is 135-140kg lighter than

Riva Hoop These days, in any modern car, connectivity is the key and Jaguar takes this several steps further than most with a special aerial fin that turns the interior of the car into a wireless hotspot, boosting signal strength to a level otherwise unknown for portable ‘devices’. Wif Fi Antenna - They call the car’s own touch-screen operated system ‘In Control Touch’. It enables you to alter the car’s settings, heat it up or air-condition it, and even start the engine from a smartphone. Not only that, you can track the car’s position from a smartphone anywhere in the World, so if someone somehow managed to steal it from an airport carpark in the UK while you were in Tokyo, you could alert the authorities and even shut down the engine. You can access millions of music tracks and talking books to load into the system and play back at will. A system called ‘Just Drive’ enables you to do all this and even receive and send ‘Tweets’ by voice control. Dash - ‘In Control Touch Pro’ enables you to plan a satnav route on a mobile phone then automatically loads it to the car, follow the route, and, if you are running late, automatically alert people to the fact. It learns your regular journeys, suggests more efficient routs avoiding traffic holdups, compensates for GPS blackspots caused by tall buildings or tunnels, can offer a panoramic view of your destination as you approach, and can feed your smartphone with a pedestrian route from a car park to your final destination. Satnav Screen - Other new features include an optional head-up display that shows the gear you are in, your speed in kmh or mph and the next satnav instruction. The instrument panel in front of the driver is configurable to give all that information too, in whatever relative sizes you want, so you can have big gear numbers or small ones, depending on what other information you require concurrently. All new Jaguar XFs have ‘Sport-tuned’ passive damping. However, optional ‘Adaptive Dynamics’ enable the driver to configure throttle response, gearchange speed, damping and the degree of electronic stability control to his own preferences, depending on the stage and type of journey. ‘All Surface Progress’ enables the car to pull away and drive on a slippery surface without any throttle input from the driver. Cruise control and speed limiter work instantly at the press of a button. Traffic sign recognition warns you of traffic and speed limit signs, and you can even programme a voice to warn you when you are exceeding a speed limit. The electric power steering system reduces CO2 emissions by around 3% compared with an engine driven hydraulic PAS system. So, what’s it like to drive? - There was an embargo on driving impressions until

Monday 17th August, so this bit was held up. But then Autocar and Auto Express broke the embargo on 15th August, effectively removing it. We drove the 2.0 180PS Ingenium diesel model with 8-speed automatic transmission and standard passive damping; the 3.0 litre 380PS supercharged petrol model both on track and on the road, and the 300PS/700Nm torque 3.0 litre V6 diesel on some spectacular mountain roads. 80% of Jaguar XF sales are expected to be diesel, and 80% of them with either the 104g/km 163PS 2.0 Ingenium engine or the 114g/km 180PS 2.0 Ingenium. We had driven the 180 Ingenium diesel auto before in the XE, but in the XF it felt less lively, even though it was only hauling an extra 75kg along. It could be that the late delivery of its maximum 430Nm torque, from 1,750rpm accounts for this. Could be the gearing is higher in order to achived the low 104g/km CO2 of the 163PS version.I guess I’d get used to it after a few weeks and would learn when to paddle shift to help it along, but first impressions were not overwhelming. Circuito F34 Red Next, it was the track. The same Circuito de Navara on which we’d driven the 340PS supercharged XE 3.0i S/C, but this time the 380PS XF with 40 more horsepower to overcome 45kg extra weight and the same 450Nm torque. This is an easier car to drive quickly on a track than the XE because it has a longer wheelbase and slightly better weight distribution. Consequently, after a mistake that disabled the DSC, I was able to get it round the circuit at a reasonable amateur pace with the DSC switched off entirely. Even I could actually play with this car, moving the back or the front a little bit, but always confidently in control. There will be more powerful XFs later, and a four-wheel drive version, but so far this is the XF for driving on business that’s also plenty of fun on a track day.

4WD Transfer Box - After that, we drove another 380PS S model on a circuitous route through the mountains to our hotel in Pamplona and it was fine. It’s the performance option. And it rides beautifully, even on the 20” wheels with 255/35 R20 tyres that designer Ian Callum prefers. Accepted, there weren’t many ridges and weren’t any potholes on Navarra’s excellent roads, but there were road humps in the villages and none of them came as a shock. Navarra Road - But for the same £49,945 you can also get a 3.0V6 diesel S, with 300PS and 700Nm torque. That 700Nm makes it effortless. Even left in Drive, on wide, open roads it punched up to serious speed at will. Show it some narrower tarmac and a series of hairpin bends, start paddling in ‘Sport’ (which holds the selected gears for you), and you’re in heaven. Despite the Matterhorn of torque on mountain roads, it’s not aggressive. It grips well, front and back. Tucks in faithfully if you get your line and your gear right, and, as well as that, on 19” wheels with 245/40 R19 tyres it’s also sublimely comfortable. Grey Side Mountains Retouched - So, I have a new favourite car: The 2015 Jaguar XF 3.0d S. Realistically, it’s going to give 40 – 45mpg on the motorway, versus more like 30 - 35 from the 3.0 litre supercharged petrol S and probably 50 – 60 from the 2.0 Ingenium diesels. That makes it nearly the perfect car. Great looking, powerful, fine handling and reasonably economical. Even though most XF company drivers will still feel obliged to plump for the 2.0 litre diesels.

Why does your Doctor study your nails?

Discoloured nails are not only cosmetically unappealing, but can be an indication of a variety of medical conditions. This is why during a general medical examination your G.P. will study your nails. Nail discolouration may manifest as white, yellow, greenish, blue, or even red or black, and can be a sign of disease or illness. In approximately 50% of cases discoloured nails are a result of fungal infections, the most common being Trichophyton Rubrum. Thanks to the latest technology, this can now be successfully treated with laser therapy thus avoiding long term treatment with creams, varnishes etc. Pseudomonas is a bacterial infection that can affect the nail bed and result in a greenish tinge to the nails. This will require antibiotic treatment. Some changes in nail colour can also be indicative of

chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, liver, kidney or heart disease. Red or black nails usually results from trauma or injury to the nail from ingrown toenails to accidentally hitting your thumb with a hammer! This in turn causes a blood clot to form under the nail. If there has been separation of the nail from the nail bed the nail will appear to be whitish / yellow in colour. One of the rare causes of discoloured nails is ‘yellow nail syndrome’. This is an inherited condition resulting in slow-growing discoloured nails and is associated with lung disease or a condition called lymphedema (swelling of tissues due to fluid accumulation). So, the colour of your nails can actually tell your doctor a lot!

Do you suffer with back pain? Those who suffer back pain may have vertebrae more like those of chimpanzees than of healthy human vertabrae, new research suggests. A Canadian study compared the backs of 71 humans, 36 chimpanzees and 15 orangutans. It found that humans with a common form of vertical slipped disc - known as “Schmorl’s nodes” - had vertabrae shaped more like those of chimpanzees.

Scientists suggested that bad backs may partly be the result of learning to run before we could walk, in evolutionary terms, with the rapid evolution of the ability to walk upright on two legs leaving some people vulnerable. The study, published in the journal BMC Evolutionary biology suggests that individuals with chimpanzee-like vertebrae are at greater risk of suffering a slipped disc. Continued on page 41

It could be your genes • Experts find solution to sex with a bad back Lead scientist Dr Kimberly Plomp, from Simon Fraser University in Canada, said: “Our study is the first to use quantitative methods to uncover why humans are so commonly afflicted with back problems compared to non-human primates. “The findings have potential implications for clinical research as they indicate why some individuals are more prone to back problems. “This may help in preventative care by identifying individuals, such as athletes, who may be at risk of developing the condition.” Up to eight in ten people will suffer back pain at some point in their life, and around one in 20 will suffer a slipped disc, with cases most common among men between the ages of 30 and 50.

of the range of human shape variation”, said the researchers. Such individuals may be less well adapted for bipedalism, they claimed. Future research will include larger sample sizes and multiple human populations from different ancestral backgrounds, as well as the results of CT scans of living people. Does our vertebrae resemble that of a chimpanzee or orangutan?

It happens when cushioning pads of cartilage between vertebrae split and release a gel-like substance that puts pressure on spinal nerves. The cause is not always clear but age is thought to be a factor, making spinal discs less flexible and more likely to rupture. Dr Plomp’s team compared vertebrae from 71 humans, 36 chimpanzees and 15 orangutans, each of which have a different mode of locomotion. While humans habitually amble on two feet, chimps mostly walk on their knuckles while orangutans use all four limbs to climb trees. All have significantly different shaped vertebrae.

Jessica Ennis-Hill Takes Gold After ‘Hardest Year’

Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, who only decided to compete four weeks ago, regained the heptathlon world title on Sunday after what she described as her “hardest year ever”. Ennis-Hill became a mother for the first time 13 months ago, and had originally intended for 2015 to be a “transition” year to prepare for the defence of the Olympic title in Rio de Janeiro. The Briton’s victory followed a dramatic twist in the day’s first discipline, the long jump, when her closest rival, team mate Katarina Johnson-Thompson, scored zero points following three foul jumps.

Ennis-Hill jumped 6.43 metres and threw the javelin 42.51 metres to give her an 86-point lead before the final event, the 800 metres. She put in a determined display, sprinting past the pre-championship favourite, Canada’s Brianne Theisen-Eaton, down the home straight to win in 2 minutes 10.13sec. Ennis-Hill, who won the world title in Berlin in 2009, finished with 6,669 points. “This time last year I’d just had my son and now I am worldchampion. It’s just an incredible feeling,” the 29-yearold Ennis told reporters.

Burgess Makes England Squad Centre Sam Burgess will reportedly keep his place in England’s preliminary Rugby World Cup squad as Stuart Lancaster prepares to cut nine players at the end of next week. The 26-year-old, who moved across to the sport from rugby league last year, is yet to make his international debut, but he will be given a further chance to show why he should be included in the final squad. The Daily Mail claims that Burgess will compete with Henry Slade

and Luther Burrell for two of the four available spots, as Brad Barritt and Jonathan Joseph are guaranteed to be selected. This would mean that Billy Twelvetrees and Kyle Eastmond will be cut from the list. Burgess has impressed in training camp in America and will be given a chance to show what he can do in a warm-up against France next month. The final 31-man squad will be announced on August 31.

Rooney Ends Goal Drought In Style Rooney netted his first goal of the season after 20 minutes with a neat finish, running on to a clever through ball from Memphis Depay. He doubled the lead four minutes after halftime following a flowing move and grabbed his third just before the hour in Belgium courtesy of a cute pass from Juan Mata.

Ander Herrera added a fourth goal as United, 3-1 up after the first leg, eased through to the group stage of Europe’s premier club competition 7-1 on aggregate. The England captain had not scored since a Premier League game against Aston Villa in April, a run of 10 matches and 878 minutes without finding the net.
