From Front Page.... The new agreement aims to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable expatriates, and their ability to access Red Cross services. It also seeks to encourage people in the British community to volunteer for Red Cross activities and promote collaboration with other British community associations. The partnership, which was signed on Monday 21 September at the headquarters of the Red Cross, will be piloted in the province of Alicante, which has a large British community. The aim is then to extend it nationwide, enabling British communities across Spain to access Red Cross services and become involved in their projects. Simon Manley said: “People in the British communities have a wealth of experience and skills, and I really hope that this new partnership with the Red Cross will encourage more people to volunteer their talents and support for the benefit of others. “The agreement will also help to ensure that British expats in the Alicante region have easier access

to the wide range of Red Cross resources, which can improve their quality of life.” Javier Gimeno added: “We have identified a large number of British people in our province who, because of their age and health, may require Red Cross services such as adapted transport, accompaniment and home telecare. Our aims are to inspire members of the British commu- tans, the Royal Airforce Association, nity to volunteer for the Red Cross Help at Home, International Resiand to encourage those who require dents Daya Nueva, AFA Torrevieassistance to take advantage of our ja, MABS Cancer Support, Help at Home Mar Menor, and the HELP services.” Pamela Twissel-Cross, welfare groups in Denia, Benidorm, Jalón officer for the Royal British Legion, Valley, Vega Baja and Mar Menor. who attended the signing, commented: “I’m really looking forward to working more closely with the Red Cross as it will give me a chance to help British nationals get additional support. “It will also be a chance to learn and find out more about what is available so that together we can support the most vulnerable.” The signing ceremony was atBritish Ambassador Simon Manley tended by representatives of a large Photo: (right) - signs agreement with Spanish number of English language assoRed Cross national vice president Javier Gimeno (left). ciations in the province of Alicante including: Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur, the Royal British Legion, the Samari-

Toni Perez gives a speech of support

by SPENCER WILLIAMS The Heat was on for the fifth International Charities Fair that took place last Sunday. HEAT FM Spain hosted the entertainment live on air with their usual great music and fantastic competitions. Heat FM also took the opportunity to speak to the charity organisers throughout the day as well as being able to interview the Major of Benidorm Toni Perez and the British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris. The pair both officially opened the event at midday to a large crowd. Sarah-Jane said “It´s very heartening to see so many here, to support those volunteering”. The Mayor made his speech, which was followed by pupils from the European school in Alicante and the Cruz Roja volunteers who sang a number of songs much to the crowd’s enjoyment. The Consul and Mayor walked around the stalls talking to the charity workers and exhibitors too. The event took place next to the very busy Rastro El Cisne held every Sunday and was organized by Pamela Dawson Tasker who showed that the local charities and associations from across the Costa Blanca can be brought together with a display of support that means so much to the people living in the area. Martin Kyme, project manager for Emaus spoke with the Mayor and British Consul about the collection tins that are being used around the area as the charity has appointed Buzz Media (owners of Heat FM Radio and also the Weekly Buzz newspaper). Martin explained “working with the Buzz newspaper is fantastic because the charity gets regular public awareness and coverage of the many

events we have organised to promote the fundraising for the many children’s homes”. Both the mayor and consul thought the project was an ideal way of creating an independent and regular income for Emaus. Together with the backing of Buzz Media and the Benidorm Series, Martin has secured a solid foundation for the charity fund raising appeal named the ‘Euro a Month’ Owner Marco Baiardo and radio presenters Ian Oogley and JB from the popular Heat FM Toni Perez (Left) with Martin Kyne (Middle) “Double Trouble Breakfast Show” had photos with the Mayor Toni Perez. SPANISH AIRPORT STRIKE PLANNED

by CRIS WEST Following a summer of disruption for travellers in and out of Spain, airport staff have this week announced two more air traffic controller strikes for September 26th and October 3rd. The USCA (Unión Sindical de Controladores Aéreos – Union of Air Traffic Controllers) has planned the strikes to both happen on Mondays between 4am to 4pm which will halt all work happening at Spanish airports causing interference for anyone flying on or around those days. Although this event is confirmed through the unions, AENA have yet to comment. These two 12 hour strikes are said to be in protest of the disciplinary sanctions placed on 61 air controllers in Barcelona back in 2010. The air controllers were

accused of paralysing airspace, which according to the Spanish Air Traffic Concaused over 200,000 passengers to be- trollers Union. Airlines said to be most affected by come stranded. The last strike just over five years ago caused 600,000 vacationers stuck just ahead of a national holiday and the Spanish government were forced to call in the army to take over control towers. The planned strike promises to cause less interruption due to the smaller 12-hour windows. The strikes are being carried out at Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Majorca and the local airport, Alicante. These additional two dates of strikes follow a summer of disrupted travel due to strikes in France, which caused a knock on affect for many travellers. My names Gary Burr and I founded Giving4Giving three years ago. We’re a Cancer Support Charity with a charity shop in La Nucia and have recently opened another in Altea. Not only do we raise funds from the shops to support local cancer charities but hold different events to raise money, fashion shows, bike rides, dog walks, cabaret shows to name a few and have raised and donated 33,340 euros since opening We normally give the money to charities on the Costa Blanca but when one of our volunteers said she would help organise a MacMillan coffee morning, we decided to break with tradition and make a donation so went along and gave them 500 euros from G4G. It turned out to be a fantastic day

and all the ladies worked very hard and should be very proud as I believe they raised 3.000 euros and we were only happy to help out as much as we could. We have a few more events planned for the rest of the year and would love to be able to raise 40,000 euros by the end of the year. In order to carry on the good work, we rely on donations and always need volunteers, so we appreciate the kind, generous people living on the Costa Blanca to continue their support of Giving4Giving. WINNING AUTHOR FROM THE US TO TALK FOR THE 4TH YEAR RUNNING

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

Dr Jack Pransky PhD, international speaker, author and consultant, will lead a potentially life transforming evening

presentation entitled Free Yourself by Looking at the True Source of Problems in Albir on Friday 2nd October.

Dr. Jack Pransky PhD author of ‘Modello’ Dr Pransky has been in the field of prevention for over 40 years, prevention meaning prevention in crime, addictions, family dysfunction, community problems and so on. In 2001 his book, Modello: A story of hope for the inner city and beyond, received the Martin Luther King Storyteller’s Award for the book best exemplifying King’s vision of “the beloved community.” The book is a true transformational story of 2 inner city housing projects replete with violence, crack, drug gangs, abuse, welfare dependency and hopelessness. It describes how they were completely turned around within twoand-a-half years and how people who lived in the most difficult circumstances were reached, came to find hope and changed their lives. It is the Principles that were shared within these communities that raised their self-esteem, well-being and common sense

that Dr Pransky will be sharing in his upcoming presentation on the Costa Blanca. Knowing how these principles work is beneficial to everyone. Dr Pransky has been sharing these Principles via his trainings, books, counseling and consulting for over 20 years now and is an expert in the field. Hence the 6 month professional training course that begins in Albir on 3rd October and ends in April 2016 is sold out again! Most of the participants attending the flagship professional training are flying in from the UK, and others from the US, France, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. This is the 4th year the course has taken place in Albir bringing in much appreciated tourism and has put Albir on the map as an international training centre and venue for events. Dr Pransky says “I love coming to Spain to deliver these trainings. Swimming in the sea and trekking in the mountains are 2 of my favourite past times both of which I manage every time I visit the Costa Blanca. It really is a privilege to be able to combine my work and pleasure, long my it continue!” For more information and to book tickets visit http://problems. eventbrite.com or call Sheela on 677 596 880.

KLEIN-SCHREUDER SCULPTURE GARDEN

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

It is one of eight museums in the town of Alfaz del Pi. It is managed by the Klein Shreuder Foundation (non-profit), and is located near the city center. The outdoor museum is fascinating, with over 20,000 square meters with more than 2,400 plant species exhibiting 19 fixed sculptures, mostly by Antonio Mari, a well-known sculptor of the Marina Alta as well as other Dutch and German artists. In 1996 two young Pensioners Johannes Klein and his wife Johanna Schreuder bought some 20,000 sq meters of neglected orange groves, designed to house and built

Then Johannes designed the layout of the garden and Johanna selected Appropriate trees and shrubs, dead fruit trees were removed, the land plowed and some 800 meters of garden path laid, at this Point the neighbors began to wonder if a new airport was underway! During the next 4 years 400 rose bushes, 100 palm trees, 60 ficus elastica trees, 400 cypresses, 1000 privet bushes and much more were planted shaping the beautiful garden you can visit today. Johannes and Johanna decided that they did not want to keep the garden just for themselves, but wanted to share its beauty with the public so they founded the Klein-Schreuder Foundation Communicidad Valencia in 2003 who continue to run the museum today. The Museum welcomes the Autumn after a very hot summer period and had reopened its doors to visitors, although this museum is not free it costs 3â‚Ź which is surely worth it which is technically a donation as it goes towards the maintenance of this wonderful garden, The park is open to the public on Sundays from 10.00 to 14.00 hours Groups are welcome on week days by prior appointment only. EXCITING TIMES FOR TERRA MITICA

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

Next season will be a year of innovations for the Terra Mitica theme park. The leisure complex has now revealed that they will have a thrilling new attraction for 2016 although few details about it are yet to be revealed we can tell you one thing, that the new attraction will be part the parks “extreme path”, ( the rides that give you the biggest adrenaline rush). Apparently we will have to wait a few months to learn the specifics of this new attraction but rumours have teased the curious thrill seekers that its going to be “high” and is designed for “young people who are parks main

audience. So without any more details we will have to wait for the official park announcement, the ride will be added to the 37 existing attractions in the park across the four themed areas . The ride will be added to the ‘extreme route’ which includes the most adrenaline rides such as Magnus Colossus, the Phoenix, Syncope, Titánide and Inferno. It has been a very long time since the park has opened a new jaw dropping ride with the last arriving back in 2007 with the opening of Inferno, over recent years they have opened other attractions such as the spa area. But this new attraction is not the only innovation for next season. by SPENCER WILLIAMS

Agents of the National Police in the operational plan against trafficking of narcotics have disabled a drug retail operation in the town of Benidorm. Specialized in the fight against drug trafficking agents found two bars where owners were not just selling drinks. The premises were frequented by people constantly arriving on both foot and by car and within minutes were seen

leaving the establishments without even having a drink. The bar owners seem to have been using the premises as a front for the drug operation. Upon searching the premises agents found 1422 euros, various tools for drug sales and various narcotic substances including cocaine, marijuana, speed and pills.

SPAIN IS NOW AT THE TOP OF THE PROPERTY INVESTMENT MARKET

2015 has seen Germany pinched at the post as the ‘top investment target in Europe’ by Spain, meaning that properties in the Costq Blanca area have never been more lucrative. A recent poll by Knight Franks has found that 27% of 150 investors who were questioned selected Spain as their preferred investment for the next 12 months. This poll shows that estate agents all over the area will also start to see an influx of buyers as well as increased properties being listed. This is a great time to find your Spanish dream home! These statistics are echoed by the increase in visitors to the Costa Blanca region as well which is estimated to have risen by 40%. Footfall at local events and shopping centres in the region has also seen a significant increase over the last

consecutive six quarters. Estate agents around the Benidorm area have also reported increased enquiries as they have found that Costa Blanca properties are some of the fastest to recover. Just behind Spain in the poll is fellow European Union member Germany with 25% of investors selecting there to invest. This is likely following the €30 billion invested in property during 2015, however property in Spain has shown a quicker and higher increase and a faster turnaround in the market as well. Whether you’re looking for a small townhouse, a private villa, a city center flat or a beach side bolthole, there has never been a better time to make your Spanish dream become a reality. The statistics also show that rental properties are being snapped up all over the region as more people are

choosing to have a Spanish home on the side. Renting a property in Spain is a great way of testing out the area before making the leap; so choosing a long-term rental might be your best option. Trailing way behind in the investor’s poll was Poland, France, Russia and the Nordic Regions, all of which scored less that 10%. Spain has suffered drastically recently with following the credit crunch and market crash which halted the property market all over the region. Still now, if you drive around certain areas in Spain, you’ll find half built roads, derelict houses and uninhabitable flats as the crash came after a property boom, meaning many new and exciting properties were planned but quickly halted. However more and more signs are coming out that the market is turning around and finally on the rise signi-

fying the importance of making an investment to ensure your own affluence. The UK again featured strongly in this year’s poll, attracting 17.4% of the votes, on the back of the continuing recovery which has now extended to the UK regions. Despite this, year-on-year there is a higher level of British becoming expats in Spain, and many choose to use a local estate agent to find their dream home. Property in the Costa Blanca not only gives you the security you need with buying a home abroad but you can enjoy the Spanish sun, absorb the local culture and live the Spanish dream. Spanish properties have never been a better investment; estate agents in the area will work with you at every step of the way to find you the dream Spanish home.

COUNTRY RIBS A TASTE OF MINESSOTA

Visit to Country Ribs in Albir located directly on the beach front with stunning views across to Calpe. Ideal for the whole family Country Ribs is very popular with the kids, as an American Diner they love the taste of the most famous ribs, and burgers. The menu choice offer something for everyone and some of the most popular dishes are the ranch style chicken and the juicy steaks the menu has much more and also a selection of their specialities with six great COMBOS. The variety is amazing my choice was the COUNTRY RHAPSODY this caught my eye as it included Hungarian Goulash together with a mixture of Chicken, Lamb, Spare Ribs and Pork Kebabs. The metal dish that served the food was huge and was filled with the sides of potato wedges and chips. I can honestly say the amount of food in the COMBO was enough for 3 or 4 people. Being meat lovers this combo was perfect, lamb chops cooked over the BBQ together with the Chicken breast, the spare ribs and kebabs made the display of meat was simply incredible not to mention the dish of Hungarian Goulash strategically positioned in the centre of the display.

My guests ordered a variety of other popular meals, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger and the star of the show was the full rack of baby back ribs with a choice of 4 tasty sauces. The size of the rack of ribs simply amazed me it took over the plate, served with the Jack Daniels & Coke sticky BBQ sauce. The meat was falling off the bone and was perfectly cooked complemented with the tangy original JD & Coke sauce a smokey but sweet BBQ flavour. Our bench style table had plenty of space to sit our group of five adults plus the attachment of a high chair to the end of the table that was clamped in place by the very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant was taken over by families so it was great to see that there was no shortage of high chairs and the mums and dads could enjoy their meals while the smaller ones were also takin part at the table. Country Ribs have been situated in Albir for many years and has built up their reputation for the quality of food in a relaxed American style diner. Call them to make a reservation on 966 865 597

1 tbsp dried porcini mushrooms 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 225g/8oz chestnut mushrooms, sliced 350g/12oz arborio rice 150ml/¼ pint dry white

Preparation

1. Soak the porcini mush-

rooms in hot water for 10 minutes, then drain well. Heat the oil in a large, heavy based saucepan and add the onion and garlic. Fry over a gentle heat for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Add the chestnut mushrooms and fry for a further 2-3 minutes, until browned. 2. Stir in the rice and coat in the oil. Pour in the wine and simmer, stirring, until the liquid has been absorbed. Add a ladleful of the stock and simmer, stirring again, until the liquid has been absorbed. Continue adding the stock in this way, until all the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is plump and tender. 3. Roughly chop the soaked porcini mushrooms and stir into the risotto,

wine 1.2 litres/2 pints hot vegetable stock 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 25g/1oz butter salt and freshly ground black pepper freshly grated parmesan (or similar vegetarian hard cheese), to serve along with the parsley, butter and salt and pepper. Serve with freshly grated Parmesan.

Wine Smooth dry Italian whites such as Soave and Gavi work well. If the mushroom content is predominantly porcini try an aged Italian red such as Barolo or vintage rosé Champagne.

“Treated a little like a child”

Reviewed 17 September 2015 If you are in Benidorm and looking for a little bit of home comfort look no further than this gem of a bar. Located in the old town opposite filthy rich it has a character if it’s own. Lee the landlord his partner Helen and able bodied bar staff Nathan and Les provide a good atmosphere, good music, live sport and a pool table. Only bar in Benidorm to stock a variety of real ale if like my pal is your fancy of beverage. Good range of local beers and cider to. Offer customers chance to pick the music which is great idea. Not far from the old town shops and restaurants and definitely worth a visit to this quality establishment

“Nice little pub”

Reviewed 11 September 2015

Called here for a quick drink or 2 very friendly atmosphere good music a good little pub all tbo a little out of the way of the way of the other pubs but worth it

“Good atmosphere” Reviewed 10 September 2015 We had a great night here good music and great atmosphere would definitely go back next time we’re in benidorm

Reviewed 16 September 2015 Quality of food at this restaurant is first class as is the service, the only draw back I found was that I didn’t appreciate being told twice that I had ordered too much food.I know that the staff were trying to protect me from ordering too much but shall I say that no food was wasted and the serving plates were cleared of the portions served. All in all it was not a bad experience but please allow your clientele to choose their own food levels and try to stop holding their hands, we are not children to be made to feel guilty.

“Lovely authentic atmosphere” Reviewed 12 September 2015 We chose duck with pancakes and a prawn hot sizzling platter both were delicious friendly service and excellent value for money excellent location just on the beach.

“Good for lunch or an evening cocktail”

Reviewed 19 September 2015 Always visit here having been to albir a number of times now. Food is always good and location is great. I have only ever eaten here for lunch as don’t think the menu is an evening meal type menu (in my opinion as plenty of people seem to eat there) But great for a drink at night!

“One of Alteas best”

Reviewed 31 July 2015 We have a villa near Altea and have sampled most of the restaurants over the past 10 years. Felix is without doubt one of the very best. The food is excellent and the service great. Our son has a serious allergy to fish and the staff could not have been more understanding and careful when this was explained. The fillet steaks were some of the best we have ever had and without exception everyone’s food was fantastic. Well done to Felix!

SAM SM BOND T

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

Leading up to the next James Bond adventure, Spectre, there’s been a lot of talk about the latest in a long line of memorable theme songs. We only recently learned that British crooner Sam Smith will lend his pipes to “Writing’s on the Wall,” as the tune is titled. At the time of print Sam had only released a teaser of the new song on his Twitter account but the single is to be released worldwide on September 25 through Capitol Records and the film it appears in will be released October 26 in the U.K. “This is one of the highlights of my career,” Smith said in an earlier statement confirming his involvement in the project. “I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part

of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.” Smith unveiled this snippet, and it really is just that, on his Twitter account on September 21, and while there isn’t a ton to dig into here, this does give you a taste of what’s to comeIt does sound rather like what you expect the theme from a James Bond movie to sound like. There are soaring strings, swooning movements, and the whole affair is quite dramatic in nature overall. Visit the HeatFM Facebook Page from Friday to listen to the song www.facebook.com/HeatFmSpain

THIS WEEKS

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

ARIES

Relationships and friendships come under the microscope this week, so if you’re looking to form a better rapport with someone, you couldn’t get a better time to start the ball rolling. Just make sure your aims and aspirations are realistic.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

TAURUS

If you’re considering a career change, there’s no harm in looking at various professional opportunities. You could do anything you turn your hand to, but its how it makes you feel, and how long you’re away from family that’s the deciding factor.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

GEMINI

It may be slow, but at least you’re making some sort of forward progress over work and home matters. Don’t be sucked in by seductive illusions socially, or you may find yourself trapped in a corner unable to break free gracefully.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

CANCER

If you find others to be resistant to your plans and ideas, it’s not necessarily the ideas they don’t like, but maybe more how you’re putting them across. Let them know you’re not willing to take any financial risks and they may come around then.

Scribble Pad

LEO

Don’t take anything or anyone for granted this week, especially where travel plans are concerned. A change of scene would do you the world of good, especially if you take a lover or close friend with you. A few days would be ideal.

VIRGO (August 24th-Sept 23rd)

VIRGO

Take time out of your busy schedule to broaden your mind in areas you’d never bothered with in the past. Start by digging deep within yourself and work out what makes you tick. Be honest with yourself or there’s no point in doing this at all.

LIBRA (Sept 24th-Oct 23rd)

LIBRA

You’ll thrive on professional challenges this week, and like a dog with a bone, you’ll take a specific course of action and won’t let go until you get what you want. Try to be more flexible when it comes to home and hearth though. It’s important.

SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd)

SCORPIO

You’re a bit emotional this week, so you’ll be reticent about taking chances in the love zone, and rightly so. Money and finances however, are a different ball game all together and luck seems to be on your side when it comes to cold hard cash.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st)

SAGITTARIUS

Your capacity for hard work has been noted by superiors, so don’t be surprised if you’re approached by bosses, and offered promotion. Think long and hard about this, as someone else wants to head hunt you and could offer you better conditions.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th) Now that you’ve patched up recent petty squabbles, you’ll be getting on well with everyone. You’ll even back down from an intense point of view you had and will meet others half way because you’ve made a compromise. Things now go CAPRICORN to plan.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb 19th) Surround yourself with the right people this week and you’ll have everything you need to make an impenetrable force field, where by working as a team you’ll all make fantastic inroads into your individual and collective long term hopes and AQUARIUS dreams.

PISCES (Feb 20th-March 20th)

PISCES

Your deep need to be the centre of attention this week is verging on the obsessive, so work out why it’s so important to you, as you may be doing this for all the wrong reasons. You’re socially prominent at the weekend, but that comes naturally.

Examine your dog for ticks daily during tick season. If you suspect he has been romping in a tick-infested area, examine him for ticks immediately. Be sure to check inside and behind his ears and around his eyes, all favorite tick hiding places. To remove a tick, follow these steps: Use a pair of tweezers to grasp the head of the tick where it attaches to the skin. Wear gloves if you plan to use your fingers to remove the tick. Pull on the tick gently and steadily. If you yank the tick away from your dog too quickly, you’ll leave part of the tick’s mouth behind, which can cause an infection.

HOW TO GET RID OF TICKS ON YOUR DOG

Huge numbers of tick eggs hatch each spring, and the young ticks climb onto grasses and other vegetation. Their sticky shells help them to cling to passing animals, including your adventurous pet dog. Ticks quickly climb down the hair, attach to the skin, and begin to suck blood, only dropping off hours or days later when they are engorged. In the meantime, any microorganisms that were hitching a ride inside this insect traveler are transmitted to your dog through the tick’s mouth. Here are some tick-prevention tips: During the tick season (April through September), limit your dog’s exposure to known tick-infested areas. Ticks often hide in tall grasses and dense vegetation. Use a tick preventive during the spring and summer months. Several products on the market kill both fleas and ticks (and

In about 20 to 30 seconds, the tick’s mouth will release its grasp and the tick will come away cleanly. Dab some disinfectant on your dog on the bitten area, being extremely careful if you’re around your dog’s eyes. Kill the tick by placing it in alcohol. Save the dead tick in a resealable plastic bag, labeled with the date on which the tick was found. This may sound weird, but if your dog becomes ill, you may need to identify the species of tick that bit him. Never remove a tick with your bare hands, and never crush a tick between your fingers. If you do, you put yourself at risk of contracting Lyme disease or one of the other tick-borne diseases. If your dog becomes ill and you recently found a tick on him, seek veterinary attention immediately.

BEREAVEMENT – HOW TO LET GO

Bereavement is a process that people go through when someone dies. Obviously, there are various beliefs regarding death, and many people feel it is simply passing on to another place. When someone dies, the conscious mind comes to terms with it relatively quickly, possibly within a week or two. The unconscious mind takes much

longer. Bereavement is therefore the unconscious mind trying to sort out all the changes that take place. For example, the future planned for two must now be for one; how to survive in a couple orientated society; is there the motivation, energy or even interest to carry on. There is no such thing as “normal” bereavement; everyone has their own

A GUIDE TO GOOD PERSONAL HYGIENE

Personal hygiene habits such as washing your hands and brushing and flossing your teeth will help keep bacteria, viruses, and illnesses at bay. And there are mental as well as physical benefits. “Practicing good body hygiene helps you feel good about yourself, which is important for your mental health,” notes Donald Novey, MD, an integrative medicine physician with the Advocate Medical Group in Park Ridge, Ill. People who have poor hygiene — disheveled hair and clothes, body odor, bad breath, missing teeth, and the like — often are seen as unhealthy and may face discrimination. Personal Hygiene: Healthy Habits In-

clude Good Grooming If you want to minimize your risk of infection and also enhance your overall health, follow these basic personal hygiene habits: Bathe regularly. Wash your body and your hair often. “I’m not saying that you need to shower or bathe every day,” remarks Dr. Novey. “But you should clean your body and shampoo your hair at regular intervals that work for you.” Your body is constantly shedding skin. Novey explains, “That skin needs to come off. Otherwise, it will cake up and can cause illnesses.” Trim your nails. Keeping your finger and toenails trimmed and in good shape

when the mind is ready to carry on with life. The bereaved has a sense of clarity that has been missing for months or years, energy (and libido) returns, and an individual emerges. Some bereaved have practical problems, particularly if they are elderly. Survivors who are men may not have the experience of looking after themselves and need training. Bereavement is a difficult time and can take years to complete. The normal process is about two years but there is no set time limit. Though it is difficult, it is important not to rush it, or delay it. Being unable to complete it can be serious and may need professional help. every morning. Lack of sleep can leave you feeling run down and can compromise your body’s natural defenses, your immune system, Novey says. Personal Hygiene: Poor Hygiene Hints at Other Issues If someone you know hasn’t bathed or appears unkempt, it could be a sign that he or she is depressed. “When people are sad or depressed, they neglect themselves,” Novey says. Talking about the importance of proper personal hygiene for preventing illnesses and providing personal hygiene items may help some people. Be candid but sensitive and understanding in your discussions, Novey says. Despite your best efforts, your friend or loved one may need professional help. You should encourage them to see a counselor or doctor if their personal hygiene doesn’t improve. Personal Hygiene: Good Habits Help Keep You Healthy For most people, good hygiene is so much a part of their daily routines that they think little about it. They bathe, they brush their teeth, visit the dentist and doctor for regular checkups, and wash their hands when preparing or eating food and handling unsanitary items. To keep those you care about healthy and safe, help them learn, and be sure that they are practicing, good personal hygiene.

tracted. This is due to their mind being taken up with the changes, leaving less for day to day matters. There follows a period of agitation, pining and yearning. The bereaved may see the deceased, hear them or smell them. This is natural, with the mind preferring to believe that there has been a mistake and the person is still alive. After the resultant guilt and depression, anger is one of the common feelings. This may be directed at the medical staff, themselves, or at the deceased for leaving. If it is a partner who has died, the survivor may have a loss of identity. One day she is part of a couple and the next she is single. Loneliness is one of the fears which now becomes a reality. will prevent problems such as hang nails and infected nail beds. Feet that are clean and dry are less likely to contract athlete’s foot, Novey says. Brush and floss. Ideally, you should brush your teeth after every meal. At the very least, brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Brushing minimizes the accumulation of bacteria in your mouth, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease, Novey says. Flossing, too, helps maintain strong, healthy gums. “The bacteria that builds up and causes gum disease can go straight to the heart and cause very serious valve problems,” Novey explains. Unhealthy gums also can cause your teeth to loosen, which makes it difficult to chew and to eat properly, he adds. To maintain a healthy smile, visit the dentist at six-month intervals for checkups and cleanings. Wash your hands. Washing your hands before preparing or eating food, after going to the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, and after handling garbage, goes a long way toward preventing the spread of bacteria and viruses. Keep a hygiene product, like an alcohol-based sanitizing gel, handy for when soap and water isn’t available. Sleep tight. Get plenty of rest — 8 to 10 hours a night — so that you are refreshed and are ready to take on the day

Murray Sends Great Britain Into Davis Cup Final In Straight Sets

Britain reached the Davis Cup final for the first time in 37 years on Sunday as Andy Murray outclassed Australia’s Bernard Tomic in straight sets to give his side an unassailable lead.

World number three Murray had teamed up with brother Jamie to win a thrilling five-set doubles rubber against Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth on Sat-

urday to leave the hosts needing to win just one of Sunday’s reverse singles.

The 28-year-old, who became the first Briton to win the Wimbledon men’s singles in 77 years in 2013, duly delivered his third point of the match, beating an increasingly dispirited Tomic 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to wild cheers from a partisan crowd in Glasgow.

Ghent has been confirmed as the venue for next month’s Davis Cup final between Belgium and Great Britain.

The Belgians have confirmed that they will be using a drop-in clay court for the matches. Clay is British No 1 Andy Murray’s least favourite surface.

Eva Carneiro Leaves Chelsea

Carneiro is reported to have parted company with the Blues in the wake of the incident on the opening day of the season when she was criticised by manager Jose Mourinho. Press Association Sport claims it is likely that she will launch a claim for constructive dismissal. Rabbatts, who is chair of the FA’s inclusion advisory board, said on Tuesday: “News of Dr Eva Carneiro’s departure from Chelsea FC makes me feel sadness and anger. She went on to explain, Carneiro had been subjected to verbal abuse, which the FA is probing, and criticism after Dr Carneiro and

physiotherapist Jon Fearn were removed from pitchside duties following criticism from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho after they ran on to the pitch to tend to Eden Hazard after he went down injured in the final minutes of Chelsea’s draw at home to Swansea on August 8.

Also on Tuesday, Chelsea striker Diego Costa was banned for three matches for violent conduct following an incident in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Arsenal.

Kapow! Tyson Fury As Batman Tyson Fury enjoys making a spectacle at press conferences. Ahead of his world heavyweight title fight with Wladimir Klitschko, the self-proclaimed “Gypsy King” has attempted to get under the skin of the champion with a number of witty one-liners and aggressive remarks.

Fury took it to the next level in London on Wednesday, arriving in a Lamborghini dressed as Batman to the amusement of the watching media.

A man dressed as the Joker then proceeded to approach the table before “Batman” jumped over the top and put

his old rival on the floor.

Klitschko initially applauded Fury to his seat, but he looked less impressed at the second stunt and will be looking to hand out some punishment to the Dark Knight when they meet for his belts on October 24.
