VW EMISSIONS SCANDAL

by CRIS WEST

Car maker Seat has recently been caught tampering with the engines on the popular Volkswagen (VW) range and it now appears that the cars made in Spain have unfortunately been embroiled in the scandal. Spain’s Industry Ministry has launched an investigation into affected vehicles to try to understand just how bad the situation could be for Spain’s environment. After an extensive investigation, it was revealed last week that Seat had installed a computer programme into their vehicles that ensured all readings taken during the initial vehicle checks gave low results on their emissions, however when the VW’s are sold and driven normally, the car produces emissions 40 times the legal limit in the US. The company has announced on Tuesday that €6.5 has been put aside to cover compensation and legal penalties however some experts believe that this could signal the end of the VW as we

know it as they will all need to be recalled. As Seat has been investigated more, it has come to light that it is not limited to just the VW engines, as many as 2.1 million Seat cars could have been fitted with the emission cheating software. Many of the cars are made here in Spain and it is estimated that 500,000 altered engines could have been fitted at the Martorell plant just outside of Barcelona according to a new report. Although the Spanish branch of the company initially kept quiet, Minister José Manuel Soria has set up a committee to analyse the crisis and called an urgent meeting with the 28 member states of the EU. The company has insisted that all VW models currently on sale do comply with the European Union regulations. Following pressure from the media, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn quit late on Wednesday and more are expected to resign soon.

Flash Dance Mob Wedding Proposal

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

A ‘Flash-Dance-Mob’ appeared in Moraira earlier this month attracting attention from the whole beachfront and customers sitting at close by bars. Bride to be Maria Gribby was one of the customers enjoying a drink and the free entertainment but was completely unaware that the show was in fact for her, it was a brilliant idea for a proposal put together by her partner Emma Sibley The whole show was caught on video, which started out in what seemed to be a regular Zumba class, with more people slowly joining in, next thing you know it was a full on flashmob with nearly 100 dancers – and complete strangers dancing to ‘Bruno Mars - Marry You’ in a fantastic routine that kept Maria unaware, all those involved were recruited by Emma online through social media. As the final dancers joined, Emma said

she was nipping to the loo, but instead crept behind the show to emerge from the crowd at the pivotal moment. It was only when partner Emma Sibley appeared from the crowd under a banner saying ‘Will you marry me Ria?’ that it sunk in. After a kiss, Emma got down on one knee and once Maria said yes the entire front joined them in celebration with a rapturous round of applause. “I was just enjoying the show,” said Maria, 44 in an interview with the Nottingham Post. “I had no idea until they were literally crossing the road in a line towards me. They just kept coming out like ants. I didn’t know where to look. Visit our Facebook page, facebook.com/TheBuzzNewspaper to watch the video.

INTERACTIVE AUDIO GUIDE ALFAZ SEES THE LIGHT by CRIS WEST Alfaz del Pi has produced an interactive audio guide that allows its users not only see the places of interest of the municipality, but interact with them as well as other users. The mobile application allows citizens and visitors to walk around the town, “listening to the descriptions and stories about each corner of the town,” said, Vicente Arques who is Alfaz’s Mayor. The application is called ‘Blabup’ and is one of just six selected projects out of a hundred that were proposed, which Alfaz Intelligence & Innovation has received for testing in their Technological Laboratories. “We wanted our town to be the first in the world to speak through this new technology, which is the Internet of voices,” said Manuel Bonilla, director of L’Alfas Intelligence & Innovation. The application will be available in five languages: Spanish, Valencian, English, Norwegian and German, and will be operational only on Android-powered smartphones to start with, but will be available on iOS soon. This technology also has a social networking component where users “can leave recorded voice messages for others that immortalize their own moments and experiences in key places” stated Alejandro Velasco, creator of the application.

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

The municipality wants to reduce energy consumption and achieve greater energy efficiency which will reduce costs. by CRIS WEST

The fantastic charity Guardian Angels which was created to help one parent families in the Denia and Javea area has now expanded and will soon be ready to support more single parent families in Benidorm too... but right now, they need you! The charity group which is being developed in Benidorm and surrounding areas, is looking for individuals to join the committee to create and run events as well as decide how the funds are spent. Guardian Angels aims to help families who have one parent, no matter how this came to pass (divorce, death, etc) through the funding of school books and other necessary but expensive equipment that can be difficult to afford on a single income, especially in Spain. The organisation also helps parents and their children though support and groups, plus they have councillors on hand to lend care where it is needed. Susana Cojocaru has been appointed the president of the Benidorm branch of the Guardian Angels and she had a quick conversation with The Weekly Buzz. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female, being a

single parent can be hard, both financially and emotionally. We are here to help you with all of those moments where it seems everything is ganging up on you. We are always looking for sponsorship however the most important thing we need right now is members for the committee. You don’t need to be a single parent yourself but you need to be able to care about others and make de- cisions that will affect people’s lives”. Although Benidorm is yet to host any fund or awareness raising events, the charity is hosting a masked ball in Denia on the 14th Nove mb e r. Tickets for the event are just €40 which includes a 3 course meal, select drinks and music from Allerton Road. Susana is a single parent herself and is looking forward to hearing from you about any support you can possibly offer, please contact her on Susana@guardian-angels.es. DRUG BUST 5 ARRESTED by SPENCER WILLIAMS

National Police officers have arrested five people accused of belonging to a criminal organization of drug traffickers based in El Campello and Elche. They engaged in the acquisition and redistribution of illegal drugs, which particularly concentrated on cocaine. In early June investigating officers believed that the group had been transporting drugs by using a hidden compartment in a car. Agents successfully established a monitoring device for the vehicle under investigation and were able to identify it whilst making a return trip from Bilbao where the drugs were thought to have been picked up. The offers then followed it to a house in El Campello. Officers intercepted the vehicle, where they found a package Drugs found inside a compartment in the headrests with 535 grams of narcotic hicle to avoid detection and engaged in substance hidden inside a compartment contact with third parties, presumably cuslocated in the backrests of the vehicle’s tomers of narcotic substances, At the berear seats, which were also equipped with ginning of September, two house searches an electronic system for opening and clos- were conducted where they seized 301 ing. The perfect blend of Spanish guitar, pop and rock music as well as jazz will promise the most well rounded night of music you’ll ever experience. Nuevo Alcazar La Nucia

If you like great food, then you will absolutely love this place… it’s tranquil, spacious and the staff are not only friendly, but they are also very professional and make your visit an experience that can only be recommended to all of your family and friends. The cuisine offers a wide range of international dishes, including top favourites from across Europe. The Buzz team went along to meet Christophe (the owner) and his team to discover more about the cuisine at Restaurant Nuevo Alcazar. The open dining room leads out onto the terrace, with its centrepiece water feature. The main AQZ is split over two levels. The decor is attractive colonial style with decorative pillars and leather upholstered furniture. The table setting is stylish and is complemented with a level of service that is impeccable. The choice of starters is extensive, and there are cold and warm options, plus a selection of homemade soups. We chose Carpaccio of Beef Rossini (served with goose liver gratin and truffle oil dressing) and a Trio of Seafood (a combination of North Sea Shrimps, king prawns and scampi). The Carpaccio melted in your mouth and in fact the toast served on the side was forgotten, as the meat was so good it really wasn’t needed. The Seafood Trio was the perfect choice for a healthy, light dish. It was fresh and cool, with a smooth and tasty dressing, well presented and extremely enjoyable. The menu offers the best variety of fish that I have

seen anywhere locally, turbot, cod, monkfish and salmon are all there, as well as other options. I was tempted, but for me the main course had to be the beef. My fillet was served with a red wine sauce and goose liver pate. The

Rack of Lamb was appealing, but I just love my steak, cooked medium it was fabulous and was served with cauliflower and a potato cake. Our other main course was Fillet of Pork, with onion and pear in a cognac and cream sauce, served with a choice of sauté potatoes and French fries on the side. There is also fresh lobster on the menu (in a choice of five varieties) plus a Children’s menu with a good selection of tasty favourites. The chef, Javier Boccalandro and his team combine French, Belgian, and Mediterranean cuisine into enticing dishes, prepared with only the best fresh ingredients. They are accustomed to serving a full restaurant of nearly 200 covers most evenings, with visitors coming back time after time. In the restaurant I noticed there was a table which was set up for a group of 20, and Christophe explained that they host a variety of parties most evenings. They also have their own extensive wine cellar with over 100 Spanish and French wines that complement the excellent service and exceptional setting. The magnificent Nuevo Alcazar is located on the CV70, on Roundabout number 6 coming from Benidorm towards La Nucia. A first class recommendation from us at the Buzz Newspaper.

Now that lady luck is on your side, you’ll be better off than you expected financially. Not only does this let you breathe more easily over business matters, but it certainly puts a smile on your face socially. You’re popular and confident. It suits you.

Playing the prima donna will get you nowhere fast, and others may start to feel they don’t know you, or worst still, don’t want to work with you. You feel the need to be appreciated, but surely there’s a better way to do this? Good deeds would work.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

For the past few weeks your life has been tailored to practical matters, meaning that you’ve had little or no time for personal enjoyment. Let friends and family know you’re annoyed at how this has panned out, but remind them it’s only temporary.

HYSTERECTOMY & SMEARS

I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and have not had a smear test since. My friend who has also had a hysterectomy is still having regular smears. Should I be having checks? There is no right or wrong here as it depends upon the situation. The important issue is that the patient knows what type of hysterectomy she has had and the reason for the procedure. During a smear test, cells are removed from the cervix (neck of the womb) and examined for changes

that may lead to cancer later on. If a woman has had a TOTAL hysterectomy, the cervix will have been removed. If she has had a SUB-TOTAL hysterectomy the cervix will have been conserved. Therefore, in the case of a sub- total hysterectomy, the woman should attend for regular smears. Very frequently, women who have had a total hysterectomy will not need to attend as they have no cervix. However, and this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, if the hysterecto-

my was performed as a result of cancer or for any other reason if there were pre-cancerous changes or the suspicion of cancer, the woman will still need regular checks. In cases such as these, a procedure known as a vault smear is performed. It is the same procedure but as the woman has no cervix, cells are removed from the closed

end of the vagina and the vaginal walls. All women undergoing hysterectomy should ensure that they know exactly what type of surgery they are having and ask the Gynaecologist if ongoing smear tests are recommended. If you are unable to find this information out, see your Doctor or Practice Nurse. For more information call: +34 96 583 52 26 Email: mail@ColinaClub.com

Lifetime risk of prostate cancer ‘has trebled’

agnosed and treated earlier, which improves the survival odds. However experts say there is much more to be done, starting with finding a more accurate way to detect the disease. The current method of screening is for the patient to complete a simple questionnaire highlighting any symptoms of prostate disease and take a simple blood test called PSA. Next week we will look in detail at the implications of the PSA test.

Above: Diagram shows the cancer and where it is in the prostate

Health Article by Albir Family Medical Centre

PUZZLE ANSWERS

Cancer Research UK estimates that the trebling of lifetime risk of prostate cancer is partly because doctors are spotting more cases and partly because men are living longer meaning more develop it. However, although the cancer rates are rising, deaths are going down having dropped by 20% in 20 years. Cancer Research UK, which compiled the data and made estimates for boys born in 2015, Projections suggest that one in every seven will develop it. The prostate is a small gland (about the size of a walnut) situated around the urethra in the male reproductive system. Because the prostate gland tends to grow larger with age, it may squeeze the urethra and cause problems in passing urine. Men notoriously are reluctant to visit their doctor especially with what they perceive as ‘personal men problems’such as urinary issues. However, it is vital that men should see their G.P. without delay should they experience any symptoms such as: • Having an urgent need to pass urine • Visiting the toilet more times per day as usual • Needing to get up more often during the night to pass urine • Having less urine flow • Experiencing burning whilst passing urine The majority of prostate problems are not cancer, however prostate cancer always has to be eliminated. We can never just assume it is NOT cancer. The other most common prostate problems are: • Inflammation (Prostatitis) • Enlarged prostate (BPH,or benign prostatic hyperplasia) One change does not lead to another. POOL LEAGUE KICKS OFF AT THE GRILL HOUSE

by DAVID MORRIS - Press Officer Defending Champions, “The Grill House” start the new campaign of the Benidorm Pool leagues at home to Serena’s Bar. The only match between these two last year, saw a win for the Grill house 6-4 but Serena’s have an ace up their sleeve this year. Lisa Layden has returned to Serena’s after a couple of successful seasons at the Ibrox bar. Last year’s league MVP Lisa, is sure to add some sparkle up there in Finestrat and again, sure to be a power house in the league this year. “Bobby’s Bar” last year’s runners-up, start their campaign away to new comers “The London Bar” B team. Bitterly disappointed at missing out on the league title last year, they will want to come out all guns blazing and have

managed to retain the same team as last year. New comers “The Peppermill” take on last year’s wooden spoon holders “Rockstar” who went the entire season without a win. The Peppermill will certainly fancy their chances and have home advantage to kick off the season but Rockstar are desperate to give their wooden title away this year. Other fixtures include, The Tartan Bar at home to The Yorkshire Pride B team and the Yorkshire Pride A team taking on the Jukebox at the Yorkshire Pride 2. All matches start at 9pm Thursday 8th October and every Thursday thereafter, come along and join in the fun. All fixtures and results can be found at www.x-patspoolleagues.com and remember to visit our face-book page, X-Pats Pool Leagues.

WORST EVER START FOR ENGLISH CLUBS

from the group stage after losing their first to games Newcastle United under Bobby Robson in 2002. Arsenal must repeat the feat to continue their 15 year run of reaching the second round. Chelsea are the only Premier League side to record a win in the Champions League this season after trouncing Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0 a fortnight ago, but their otherwise stuttering form continued in Lisbon. Mourinho’s men have now lost five of 11 games in all competitions so far this season - after losing just four in 54 in the last campaign. English clubs’ poor travels on the continent seem to be getting worse - last season all four representatives crashed out before the quarter-finals - and threatens to see the Premier League’s allocation of places in the Champions League slashed from four to three. Only the three best-performing European leagues according to Uefa’s coefficient ranking are given four qualification spots for the competition. England currently lie third but Italy are fast catching up and a repeat of last year’s results - which saw Juventus reach the final - would see the country’s swap places. The coefficient is based on a country’s results in the Champions League and Europa League over rolling fiveyear spell. Thankfully for the elite English clubs hooked on the large revenues promised by qualification to the competition, Italy’s chances of overtaking England were hampered by Lazio’s failure to make it through the qualifying stage, while Roma suffered a damaging loss to Belarussians BATE Borisov tonight. Diego Costa struck the crossbar with a second-half effort

From Back Page Meanwhile, Chelsea succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Porto meaning English clubs have now played six, lost five after Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City were defeated in their opening fixtures a fortnight ago. Even if City and United both win tomorrow night, it will still be English clubs’ worst collective start to a Champions League campaign since they’ve had four sides in the group stage. Wins for City at Borussia Monchengladbach and United against Wolfsburg tomorrow will give English clubs a combined nine points from two gameweeks - their worst tally at this stage since 2001 when England only had three teams in the competition. After what is now their worst-ever start to the competition, Arsenal face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stage with two games against German champions Bayern Munich and a testing return trip to Olympiacos still to come. Only once before has an English team ever qualified

Hamilton Back On Top

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton pulled off an aggressive opening-corner passing move on teammate Nico Rosberg and went on to win the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, moving a step closer to claiming his second straight Formula One title. Hamilton, who had his first retirement of the season at last weekend’s Singapore GP, capitalised on a strong start and surged ahead of Rosberg at the first corner. He led the rest of the way, crossing the finish line 18.9 seconds ahead. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was third, 1.8 seconds behind Rosberg, who started from pole. Australia’s Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo finished 15th after suffering a punctured tyre early in proceedings. With five races left, Hamilton has a 48-point lead over Rosberg. It was Hamilton’s eighth win of the season and his 41st career win, tying him with his childhood hero Ayr-

ton Senna. Rosberg and Hamilton went through the first two bends at Suzuka side by side. Hamilton appeared to give Rosberg little room at the second turn, forcing the German partially off the track. “I didn’t think it was that close,” Hamilton said. “The inside line is the inside line, so it was my corner.” Rosberg was reserving judgment until he saw the incident on replay. “It was a pity to do that on the start,” Rosberg said. “We battled around turns one and two. It got very close on the exit at turn two and I had to back out and that cost me the race.” Vettel’s Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was fourth followed by Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. The podium positions were exactly the same as last year’s race at Suzuka which was marred by a crash involving Jules Bianchi, who died in July, having never regained consciousness.

WHAT A WENGER

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger found himself attacked from all sides on Wednesday after his selection decisions backfired to leave his team facing an embarrassing groupstage exit in the Champions League. Wenger elected to pick David Ospina instead of first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech at home to Olympiakos on Tuesday, but the Colombian committed a first-half howler, palming a corner into his own net, as Arsenal lost 3-2 to register a second consecutive

Group F defeat. “OOPSPINA” was the headline in British newspaper the Daily Mirror, while the Daily Express said the former Nice goalkeeper had committed a “calamity” and The Sun said Wenger’s men had been “humiliated”. Wenger claimed afterwards that Cech had been left on the bench due to a “slight (fitness) alert” prior to Saturday’s 5-2 win at Leicester City, but Arsenal great Ian Wright said the Frenchman had made a “big mistake”.

WORST EVER START FOIR ENGLISH CLUBS English clubs are enduring their worst ever start to the Champions League in its current format after both Arsenal and Chelsea lost on Tuesday. Arsenal were defeated 3-2 at home by Olympiacos - the Greek side’s first ever win on English soil - to condemn Arsene Wenger’s men to two losses from their opening two Champions League games for the first time.
