Austin probably sounds perfect right now if you like having fun, being outside, being inclusive, and saving money. Many of Austin's cons are tied to its pros. While it's great to consider a place's happy, eclectic energy (especially if you have kids), logistics can be tricky.

Con: The housing market is complex While a thriving real estate market appears to be more of a benefit than a disadvantage, it does pose some challenges for people looking to relocate to Austin. Essentially, the value of homes is increasing dramatically, which benefits homeowners, but the majority of the population cannot afford those prices and thus suffers as a result. Multi-family housing (such as condos and apartment complexes) is required, but with increased demand comes an increase in rent, especially since there aren't enough multi-family options within many locals' price range.

Con: You’ll need a car, but hate the traffic In Austin, driving is a zero-sum game. Because there is no rail transit, your only options for getting around town are the public bus system, a bike, scooter, or motorcycle, your two feet, or a car. Depending on where you need to go and the hot, unpredictable weather, alternatives to driving aren't always the best option. You should get a car if you can. As luck would have it, traffic is one of the many things the Austin area is known for. While this is one of Austin's only truly negative reputations, no amount of catchy slogans will make you forget that it takes half an hour to travel five miles. Having said that, most major cities experience traffic congestion, so it's critical to weigh your options before making a decision.
