elcome to our debut issue of B WOMAN Magazine! Wow, it’s been a crazy and exciting ride getting here. It was only a few months ago that I decided to take on this new journey and it has been a thrilling and rewarding experience. We are Baltimore’s first women’s monthly magazine and that is something to be excited about. We are on a mission to keep women connected in Baltimore and share their experiences, be inspired and learn from each other. We embrace what it is to be a woman. B WOMAN Magazine includes articles, advice and stories on anything and everything from food, wine, relationships, family, friends, pets, travel, career, finances, beauty, fashion, health, fitness and home. In this issue, you’ll get to read about several things that we as women want to know about. We wanted to start the debut issue out with a bang, and I think we managed to do that. You’ll get to read Yvonne Lawson’s review on Happy Hour in Baltimore, Dawn Blount-Walker’s advice on putting color in your home and Rachel Wasserman’s guidelines for staying on track with your wellness. Sharon McRae will also speak about the importance of breast cancer prevention – a must read for all women! Finally, Alison Gary will share tips and tricks on creating a universal business wardrobe. It has been a challenging, yet rewarding, ride to arrive at this first issue. Thankfully, I’ve had a wonderful team of supporters and contributors to this publication and I could not have done it without them. I look forward to expanding this new and exciting venture and building our team of writers, artists, photographers, distribution locations and advertisers. I hope you enjoy our first publication. We are always looking for great women to feature in our magazine and get us inspired. Be sure to connect with us if you know anyone!

Go Ahead, Fall in Love with Color! By Dawn Blount-Walker

J

ust imagine how drab life would be without color! Nothing around us but black, white and grays! Wouldn’t such a world be rather bleak? So how do you choose a color scheme? It’s really quite simple, but first you have to fall in love! Fall in love with a painting, wallpaper, an area rug, even a floral arrangement and the color scheme you’ve been searching for will appear! Anything with a pattern, including upholstery or drapery can be the perfect place to start! When developing your color scheme, remember the 60%-30%-10% rule of thumb. Your favorite color should play a dominant role; 60%, while other colors should be proportionate to your dominant color focus. When selecting your color schemes, test your colors by 12 B WOMAN Magazine / August 2013

the natural light of day and the artificial light in your home in the evenings. Sometimes, artificial light can make some colors appear completely different. It’s also important to remember that incandescent bulbs generally tend to give off more yellowish glow, therefore giving color a bit more of a yellowish cast. While this may be flattering to warm colors, it may affect cooler shades in an unflattering manner. Before finalizing any new and exciting color scheme, be sure to see how your colors will behave in the rooms they will be used, with the lighting present in those rooms! Don’t forget to have some fun! Today’s home furnishings fabrics and designs are often color coordinated to help you take the guesswork out of your next decorating project. Fabrics, wall coverings, area rugs, bed linens,

Once you’ve done your homework and decided on your perfect color palette, be sure to select one dominate color, a maximum of three adjacent hues, and a dramatic accent color to complete your overall color scheme. Many decorators recommend color continuity throughout a house. However, this doesn’t mean using the same color scheme in every room– how boring would that be! It does, however, mean a smooth color transition from one room to the next. One connecting color will serve to accomplish this. It could be a soft sage green, robin’s egg blue, buttercup yellow or any color, actually. The key is to use your connecting color in varying degrees of intensity from room to room. Sometimes your main color in one room would be better used as an accent color in an ad-

Even if your favorite colors do not work as a major player in your new room, you could possibly consider using that favorite color as an important accent shade. Here are a few tips on helping you “hone in” on your perfect color selection: 1. Take a look in your closet! What colors do you see in your wardrobe that you particularly enjoy? Doesn’t it stand to reason that the very colors you’re attracted to in your wardrobe might just be the perfect shades to consider in re-coloring a room?

Don’t forget to have some fun! Today’s home furnishings fabrics and designs are often color coordinated to help you take the guesswork out of your next decorating project. 2. Take a look around your bedroom. Is there an accessory, piece of art, even an area rug that “speaks” to you? Entire room designs have been beautifully accomplished by focusing on one simple multi-colored vase. 3. What’s your personal style? Do you enjoy a more casual lifestyle? Or perhaps the contemporary style is more you? Knowing your style will give you an important clue as

Prevent Breast Cancer Shifting the Focus from Treatment to Prevention By: Sharon McRae, CHC

I

t’s hard to imagine in the midst of summer’s heat, but Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be here again before we know it. We’ll see pink ribbons everywhere: On cosmetics, kitchen appliances, clothing, buckets of chicken, bagels, frozen pizzas, cartons of yogurt and milk, and bags of potato chips. How many of us can truly say we need this reminder to be “aware” of breast cancer? While many women, if not themselves current or former breast cancer patients, know at least one person who has been affected by this disease, there is still much that many of us do not know about it. For instance, we hear a lot of talk about the breast cancer gene(s), but research shows that the majority of breast cancer cases are not genetically based. I became a certified health coach in large part because I watched my mother receive an early diagnosis, suffer off and on for 26 years, and ultimately succumb to this deadly disease just over four years

ago. She tested negative for the genes implicated in breast cancer, and that did give me some peace of mind. Shortly after her diagnosis, I began reading as much as I could about breast cancer. I learned that there were some ways in which I could protect myself: Having regular breast exams and mammograms, practicing monthly breast self exams, exercising regularly, breast-feeding when I had children, and avoiding chemicals that were potential carcinogens. I lived in a constant state of high alert all throughout those years, faithfully going for my yearly mammograms and breast exams with my doctor…. and constantly checking my breasts in between for the slightest lump or bump. It was truly terrifying; I felt like a ticking time bomb rested in my chest for many years. Though there was no real discussion around weight and diet, I began making modifications to the way I ate. But it wasn’t until years later, after I had my three children and was passing time in WWW.BWOMANMAGAZINE.COM

the cancer ward at Hopkins while my mother was dying of metastatic breast cancer, that I had my epiphany. I remember standing in the pantry, the small

room where food is stored for the patients. I was surrounded by the depressing sight of suffering patients and their distraught relatives, and feeling completely helpless to be amongst them. And at that moment I heard a voice inside my head say, “Stop eating animal protein.” That was it. And I had no idea what it meant, other than that if I listened, it meant I would be the “V word” (vegan). And the thought of eating a vegan diet terrified me…I was already so limited in what I ate, and this would mean giving up some of my favorite foods. But after two weeks, I decided that I didn’t miss dairy at all and was ready to “come out” as a vegan. The reaction was hardly a positive one. Everyone, especially my husband and kids, was in a panic. What would I eat? How would it affect them? How could we go to restaurants or to the homes of relatives or friends for dinner? But I reassured them all that I wouldn’t change a thing for them and that I would take care of my dietary preferences myself. However, soon after, in my early conversations with representatives from the nutrition school in which I enrolled for health coach certification, someone recommended that I read the book, “The China Study” by T. Colin Campbell. That was the book that changed my life. It detailed the very strong connection between casein, the protein found in milk and dairy products, and the promotion of cancer. And I went into a full-blown pan16 B WOMAN Magazine / August 2013

ic, because my kids, who had been raised vegetarian and had never eaten meat, were eating a lot of dairy. They were 10, 10, and 6 at the time, and I remember sitting them down and telling them they were not going to eat any more cheese, eggs, yogurt or ice cream. They all three cried, real tears. They were terrified. I explained why I was doing this, not to punish them, but to protect them. Not only did we lose my mother to cancer, but my father is also a survivor; he lost his brother and his aunt to cancer, and both of my grandmothers died of cancer, in their early 60’s. My husband’s mother went on to get her own diagnosis of colon cancer a year or two later, and his brother was diagnosed with cancer just last year. The cards were stacked against us, but I was armed with knowledge about how we could protect ourselves, at least in part, and I couldn’t ignore it. As the years went by, I continued to learn more and more about the importance of food with regard to health and disease prevention. I read the books “Eat to Live” and “Super Immunity” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and they further refined my vision of what the most protective diet would be. I watched and shared the highly informative and compelling documentary, “Forks Over Knives.” All of this made me realize that I had to begin including more whole plant foods in order to get the protective benefits of their antioxidants

“We are already “aware” of breast cancer. We are aware of how it can rob us of life and of love. And we are tired of being made to feel fearful and vulnerable just because we are women. Armed with the nutritional knowledge that is already abundantly available, we have the power to protect ourselves...”

and micronutrients. I learned that nutritional researchers have been publishing scientific studies for more than two decades that demonstrate that eating

certain foods, like mushrooms, flaxseed, cruciferous vegetables, whole forms of soy, and green tea, significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer onset or recurrence. Conversely, eating the so-called “Standard American Diet”, including dairy and other saturated fat and especially protein from animal products, as well as highly processed and refined products, significantly increases that risk. Many

physicians are not informing their patients of this important research, either because they do not know about it (medical students receive minimal training in nutrition), or because they know about it but don’t believe their patients are likely to change their diets. Today, my entire household (my husband and I and our three kids) follows a healthy whole food, plant based lifestyle and has been doing so for several years. We all are enjoying better overall health, fewer doctor visits, increased energy and vitality, and the comfort of knowing that every time we pick up a fork or a spoon all of us are dramatically lowering, instead of increasing, the risk of contracting cancer (as well as heart disease, diabetes, and many other chronic illnesses that are all too

common in our country today). And, I might add, we are all enjoying delicious food! What’s more, my personal interest in this subject has now become a professional pursuit in what I believe to be my life’s calling. I run my own business as a certified health coach specializing in helping other individuals and families transition to the many joys and benefits of a healthy, whole food plant based dietary lifestyle, and I am a certified nutrition and cooking instructor for PCRM’s (Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine) Food for Life program. Looking back, I feel quite certain that if, just once during my mother’s long battle with breast cancer, a single medical professional would have told her about the research demonstrating the very powerful connection between nutrition and cancer, she would have made some major changes. She would have started eating more vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains to increase her fiber intake (fiber carries excess estrogen out of the body), and she would have found substitutes for her favorite frozen yogurt/ice cream desserts and meat dishes, which did not contain animal protein to fuel her cancer. She would have lost the excess weight that was causing her circulating estrogen levels to remain high… and I’m betting she would still be here today. It is for this reason that I am so passionate about spreading the word. We can take control and we must start making changes right away, to protect ourselves and our loved ones from this dreadful disease. It is this message that I want to share: We are already “aware” of breast cancer. We are aware of how it can rob us of life and of love. And we are tired of being made to feel fearful and vulnerable just because we are women. Armed with the nutritional knowledge that is already abundantly available, we have the power to protect ourselves, not just to wait for the magic and elusive “cure” that we hope will be discovered before we or any of our loved ones receive a diagnosis. We are not helping to prevent breast cancer when we continue to consume products that may well promote breast cancer, like dairy, meats, refined and processed foods, and personal care items laden with carcinogens. If we are going to solve the problem of breast cancer, we must focus on the cause, and not exclusively on treating the disease after it has been diagnosed. If you want to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer, join the fight to PREVENT IT. Sharon McRae is the owner of Eat Well Stay Well, LLC. Inspirational Woman Sewn with Love

By: Beth Kurtz

“S

ewn with Love”…If anyone knows what it means to sew with love, it’s Deborah Kurtz of The Golden Needle Seamstress Studio. Deborah has been sewing for over 45 years, since she was 10 and she’s not letting up any time soon. Deborah’s work is brilliant, elegant and beautiful. She sews custom gowns, clothing for all sizes, and accessories. Her shop has expanded from seamstress, to sewing teacher, to a woman who owns several successful brands. She has created a cute children’s clothing line called Bumble Bee Babies, a plus size line called Classic Fashion Plus, and she has recently launched her third brand – Freedom Belles - a clothing and accessories line for American Girl Dolls. Although Deborah has had much success with her sewing and design business, one of the Deborah’s

projects that she is most proud of is her daughter’s wedding dress. Now, this is a gown that was sewn with love. Deborah created the gown for her daughter, Anne, from scratch. It was a custom gown that Deborah was proud to sew and Anne was honored to wear. All the sweat and tears Anne put her mother through throughout her life, wasn’t over yet. Deborah had another opportunity to do something for her little girl. Deborah expressed just how much it meant to her. “The most special part of sewing my daughter’s wedding dress was that I could be a part of her special day by contributing my talents that I have learned from my own mother.” Deborah had taught all of her children to sew, but this was a project that would call on an expert, Deborah herself.

B INSPIRED

Anne had searched for a wedding dress that she wanted to say “I do” in, but did not have any luck. Knowing she had her mother right at her fingertips, Anne could not refuse the offer. They still went gown shopping to see what the soon-to-be-bride liked, didn’t like, and what looked best on her. Anne also pulled several images off of the Internet to help decide on the look of the dress. The feelings were mixed after liking bits and pieces of different dresses. After pulling several different designs into one, Deborah sketched out the dress on paper. She then took her daughters measurements and created a pattern that would eventually lead to Anne’s final dream gown. She figured out how much fabric, trim, linings and notions she would need. Anne and Deborah then went shopping for fabrics. There were so many to choose from: satin, charmeuse, silk, ivories, whites, etc. Anne finally decided on an ivory charmeuse fabric. They found some sparkly trim and a cream colored sash that would serve as a waist band, tied it off with two beautiful flowers, accentuated with pearls. Deborah, as an expert, did not have any major obstacles with the dress. Designing and sewing is second nature to her. Although some parts were more time consuming than others, Deborah had made several wedding dresses and renaissance dresses before, so she knew exactly what was involved. The most challenging part was not having a pattern. Deborah used a manikin to drape the muslin, a fabric used to make a mock design, around the correctly sized model to arrive at the perfect pattern. The pleats in the front and the back took the most time. She had to sew some pieces

by hand and gather the fabric into the perfect folds. Once Anne tried on the muslin dress, the pleats fell perfectly around her silhouette. Using the muslin, Deborah created a pattern and transformed it into a beautiful, one of a kind wedding dress. Deborah is proud of the time and commitment that she put into her daughter’s dress. “I knew how much it would mean to her, to be able to wear the perfect dress that she chose. No one else would have this one-of-a-kind dress. I wanted to make a memory for her and myself for something we could think about for years to come.” Completing a wedding dress entails a lot of things and every dress is different. Some dresses are simpler than others and some are very detailed. The more layers, beads and bling all add to the time it takes to finish. Depending on how much detail you want on your gown, this

“The most special part of sewing my daughter’s wedding dress was that I could be a part of her special day by contributing my talents that I have learned from my own mother.” will also vary the complexity. There will be constant fittings to make sure the gown fits perfectly. Be sure to agree on all the details upfront. The more changes that you create to your dress throughout the process, WWW.BWOMANMAGAZINE.COM

the longer it will take to complete. Deborah has some advice for those brides that are looking for the perfect wedding gown. “My advice is to make sure it is the gown you love and don’t settle for anything less. This is your special day – if you can’t find the special dress already made, consider having a seamstress make it from scratch. You will be able to work directly with your seamstress to determine what look you would like and choose fabrics, beads or bling you want, if any. An expert seamstress knows what to do to bring all of those little details in to one stunning gown. This is your wedding day and just as my daughter will always treasure her custom gown, you too should walk down the aisle in your dream wedding dress.”

WHAT TO WEAR Interviews, Conferences & Business Trips BY: ALISON GARY

A

fter years in different jobs in the corporate arena, I have learned to have a staple career wardrobe. These are pieces that are versatile, work with one another, and have me ready for whatever my job throws my way. Below I address three common work situations and what to wear for these events. You’ll see I reuse the same pieces – there’s no need for an enormous wardrobe to be stylish and professional. If you shop smart, knowing when to invest and when to budget,

you can have a hard-working career wardrobe that will support you through all work experiences, including the ones below.

The Interview

E

ach great job starts with a great interview. While dress code will vary depending on the field of work, you can’t go wrong with a well-tailored black pantsuit. Black is a versatile color that can then be used in other aspects of your life –

Suit Jacket: Hobb, $300 - johnlewis.com; Suit Pants: Chloé wide leg trousers, $219 - barneys.com. Tops from left to right: Alice Olivia alice olivia tank, $165 - aliceandolivia.com; Strenesse silk shirt, $69 - maryandpaul.com; D G v neck shirt, $180 - flannelsfashion.com; By Malene Birger green top, $82 - vanmildert.com; Soaked in Luxury sleeveless top, $26 - welikefashion.com. Handbags from left to right: Fendi purse, $1,509 - barneys.com; Aspinal of London black zipper bag, $900 - johnlewis.com; Brahmin crocodile leather handbag, $325 - brahmin.com; Mark Cross satchel style handbag, $1,950 - barneys.com. you can dress up with silk heels and sparkly jewelry for a cocktail party or wear the pieces separately in your everyday work wardrobe. A pantsuit is a safe bet that will keep you from stressing over hosiery and will be appropriate no matter the time of year. Buy a suit free of adornments, embellishments, and memorable details so it can be worn over and over for many years to come. Popular retailers like Ann Taylor and J. Crew sell quality suiting at reasonable prices – stalk their clearance racks and you may be able to find a classic and stylish suit for up to 50% off retail. Don’t be afraid to show your personality in your interview ensemble – choosing a shell in a signature color with an interesting neckline will help your interviewers understand you better as a person. A solid color is a better choice as it will also be more versatile in your everyday work wardrobe. Be sure that no cleavage is showing and that you can take off your jacket without exposing lingerie or too much skin. A sleeveless or short-sleeve blouse will be more comfortable when you’re sweating or getting hot with the stress of the situation. This is a piece you could find at any pricepoint – as long as it fits well and is modest, you could find a great blouse anywhere

from Goodwill to Target to your favorite department store. As for accessories, keep them simple, polished, and classic. A structured handbag large enough to hold a copy of your resume or laptop is a wise choice – as with the suit keep it free of too many details so it is professional and timeless. As for shoes, any heel height can work as long as the shoe has structure, simple details, and a polished finish. A leather pump with anything from ½” to 3” heel is appropriate, choose a closed toe so that it is appropriate no matter how conservative the office environment. This is a type of shoe that can be worn anywhere from the office to a wedding to a funeral so it’s smart to invest in a pair that fits well and is crafted with care. As for jewelry, feel free to wear it but be sure it doesn’t wear you – keep the bold statement necklaces, jangly bangles, and chandelier earrings for another occasion.

The Conference

a bit more relaxed, and also truly showcase your personality. Wearing clothes with stretch (stretch wool, ponte, heavyweight jersey) will keep you looking crisp after hours of sitting and socializing. I recommend wearing color so you stand out in a crowd of gray, navy, and black. A signature piece is also helpful so people will remember you as the woman with the leopard-print belt, the purple scarf, the green snakeskin pumps. Wear layers or pack a cardigan in your tote for conference rooms can really blast the A/C. Carry a structured bag, but one that is large enough to hold your iPad or laptop as well as all the swag you will collect from vendors. A bag similar to the one for an interview is perfect, though in this environment a color would be acceptable.

The Business Trip

O

ften you will have to travel by car, train, or plane to another location and head right into a meeting. It’s important to have on hand an ensemble that can survive hours of sitting and still look crisp for your client.

A variation of the interview ensemble is a great choice, and another reason to invest in a quality black pantsuit. To be budget-friendly, I have kept the black pantsuit and pumps as the foundation. The interview bag would also be a wise choice – it is already in your wardrobe and can hold all your meeting essentials while looking professional. Since you will be traveling, it is wise to wear a blouse that has a lot of stretch to it. Many knits can look too casual, a silk jersey or matte jersey will look professional while keeping its shape all day. A blouse with at least a cap sleeve will be professional enough to wear on its own if it’s warm. As with the interview blouse, this is something you can find at most any pricepoint as long as you look out for good fit, structure, and fabric. This is also a piece you can wear time and time again – with trousers or a skirt to the office and even with jeans for a night out with the girls. To keep your jacket crisp, I recommend not wearing it until you arrive at your destination; to ward off chill (and also have an alternate look if you wish to go out to dinner after the meeting), consider a cardigan or soft jacket in a complementary color.

Suit Jacket: Hobb, $300 - johnlewis.com; Suit Pants: Chloé wool pants, $219 - barneys.com. Tops from left to right, up to down: Kaliko v neck shirt, $23 - johnlewis.com; People Tree shirt top, $21 - peopletree.co.uk; Wallis petite blouse, $18 - wallisfashion.com; Kaliko, $24 - houseoffraser.co.uk; Precis Petite waterfall cardigan, $29 - debenhams.com; H M v neck cardigan, $15 - hm.com; Orange coat, $36 - romwe.com; Mango cardigan, $9.99 - mango.com. Shoes from left to right: Kate Spade black court shoes, $328 jildorshoes.com; Hobbs leather wedge heels, $210 - johnlewis.com; Pied a Terre black bow pumps, $70 - johnlewis.com; L.K.Bennett low heel pumps, $225 - johnlewis.com.

B Bistro, Bolton Hill

B WOMAN Magazine / August 2013

By: Beth Kurtz

Bolton Hill, another neighborhood known for its charm, is a historic district located just 1.5 miles north of the Inner Harbor. The neighborhood expands a quiet and peaceful five city blocks, with no major traffic, and hardly any outsiders roam this community. The sidewalks are lined with rich, green-filled trees and the houses have some of the most historic architecture dating back to the 19th Century. Bolton Hill is packed with picturesque parks, serene historic fountains, and impressive monuments that complement the appropriate period architecture. Diversity in Bolton Hill makes it one of the most accepting neighborhoods in the city. It contains a variety of age groups, races, religions, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles. Unlike most communities in Baltimore, Bolton Hill has not been overrun with commercial buildings and shops. In fact, “B

B CITY

Bistro” is Bolton Hill’s one and only prominent café, located on the corner of Bolton Street and Mosher Street. It offers the residents a less trendy, but cozy atmosphere, with top notch food. If you are looking to be surrounded by art students, families, joggers and friendly neighbors, this is the place for you. Federal Hill, also dating back to the 19th Century, is a neighborhood that earned its name after thousands of Baltimoreans marched from Fells Point to the hill to celebrate the Maryland General

Assembly’s ratification of the Constitution. The historic community sits just south of the city’s central business district. The plush green hill is a featured park that can be seen across the city’s harbor. Blocks are bounded with enchanting brick row houses, which have been converted to more modern homes over the recent years. There are several gratifying shops, restaurants and bars through the communities’ blocks, making it an attractive place to find a home for young professionals, as well as, families. The frequently visited Cross Street Market, American Visionary Art Museum and Maryland Science Center are just a few of the attractions this remarkable neighborhood has to offer. Recent years have brought several developments to the area, which is has created easily, accessible living to city goers. Known as one of the fastest growing communities, Mount Vernon is a historic neighborhood just 10 blocks north of the harbor. It is filled with college students, young professionals, singles, and empty nesters. It is home to the University of Baltimore, which has greatly assisted in expanding the community in recent years, adding businesses, condominiums and row houses converted into apartments. This historic district is exploding with diversity from the Walters Art Museum, Center Stage, the Lyric and the Peabody Musical Institute, as well as, famous monuments and churches. Although this area continues to transform, the his

toric society continues to ensure the original Victorian and 19th century feel of its neighborhood. Fell’s Point sits just east of downtown Baltimore, running along the city’s waterfront. The cobblestone streets are filled with locally owned restaurants, fitness centers, home furnishing stores, shops, antique stores, coffee bars, a music store, and a market place. Nightlife and entertainment are prime in Fells Point. Some of Fell’s Points history includes the support of privateers during the War of 1812 and a shipbuilding center. The short walking distance to everything makes this a perfect home to families, graduates, singles and educated individuals of various social levels. Sitting adjacent to Fell’s Point, Canton is a restored industrial area, where vacant warehouses have been converted to high end living spaces. Walking distance to the marina, Canton provides a mix of city life with the accessibility to get in your boat at the end of the day and enjoy a sunset evening on the harbor. This neighborhood is home to one of the city’s largest grocery stores, Starbucks and Canton Square, a win-win for anyone looking to have everything they need within a few city blocks. If you are really looking for luxury living, look no further than Harbor East. A new image for Baltimore, Harbor East is as good as it gets. Extravagant condos and sky scrapping apartments all rise above the fast-paced streets of this promising community. Built right on the water, residents can enjoy the walk on the calming inner harbor, or step outside

their homes into a shopper’s paradise. With several boutique shops, an ice cream parlor, a movie theater, and more restaurants than anyone can ask for, Harbor East is the ultimate place for city living. WWW.BWOMANMAGAZINE.COM

Ashley & Bill

shley Crouse-Ackerman, 27, and Bill Ackerman, 31, were married in an intimate wedding ceremony, with about 150 guests, on their family’s estate. On June 8th 2013, they surrounded themselves with those that meant the most to them, exchanged their handwritten vows and said I do to each other during their heartfelt ceremony. Ashley and Bill’s love story begins when Ashley met Bill while he was working at a local gym. They first started dating in April of 2012 and were engaged by October of that same year. They were at the perfect place in their lives and knew what they wanted. There was no reason to delay their future and what was to come. Only Ashley can explain the moment she met Bill. “We hit it off really quick. We both knew family was important and he embraced my 4 ½ year old son, which was really important. We shared the same values and did not want a long engagement. It was love at first sight. He was perfect.” Bill proposed to Ashley on October 19th while they were in the home they shared. Ashley was upstairs and she received a text message from Bill to read the chalkboard in the kitchen downstairs. He left a message on their kitchen chalkboard that said “Will you marry me?” As soon as Ashley turned the corner, Bill was at the bottom of the stairs, down on one knee. Bill proposed to Ashley and she said yes! They had already planned on leaving for a weekend in New York the next day and it was a very “special moment to us,” Ashley explained. They would get to spend an entire intimate weekend together, just the two of them. Their wedding ceremony was a hit. Decorated with a slight vintage feel, Ashley and Bill wanted the décor to be a mixture of elegance with a bit of high-end shabby chic. Vintage farm tables were placed around the estate and decorated with beautiful, huge hydrangea’s running down them. Ashley surprised Bill with a groom’s cake, which they couldn’t 28

B BEAUTIFUL

Fruity Beauty Using Fruit to Make You More Beautiful By: Beth Kurtz

It’s common knowledge that fruit makes us healthy and provides great vitamins and minerals to our bodies. But did you know that it also has a positive impact on making us beautiful? That’s right, no need for make up or high priced manicures here. To get a naturally beautiful look, just look towards fruit! Fruit contains an overwhelming number of vitamins and minerals that are not only healthy for you, but can make you look radiant. With summer here, now is the perfect time to start your fruity beauty regime. From lemons to apricots to citrus fruits to tomatoes, what fruit isn’t great for you? Lemons are wonderful. They’re bright and attractive for a reason and they can make you beautiful too. Lemons applied to the skin can drastically diminish age spots, fade away those unwanted blackheads, and give you livelier, softer skin. If you are looking for more even tone skin, apply the lemon to your face for a few hours and then wash it off with cool water. If you have dry or rough 30 B WOMAN Magazine / August 2013

areas on your knees or elbows, rub the lemon on them for a few seconds to make them softer. Leave it on your skin overnight and wash it off in the morning. If you are looking to take full advantage of this fruits’ benefits, squeeze some into your warm bath for a full body treatment.

Apricots are one of my favorite fruits. They are refreshing, taste delicious, are rich in iron and are great for your skin. Dried

apricots contain an essential antioxidant, beta carotene, which will boost the look of your complexion. Antioxidants replenish your cells by destroying free radicals in your body. These are harmful chemicals that are produced naturally and are absorbed from the environment. Citrus fruits, cherries, strawberries and kiwi fruits are great for lines and wrinkles, thanks to the plentiful amount of Vitamin C, which is crucial to fighting damaging skin. This vitamin assists your body with building collagen, the protein that is known for being the connective tissue in skin. It also helps us to absorb the iron we take in from other foods. Eating these fruits helps to keep skin tight, preventing it from sagging. They also increase circulation to the scalp, which promotes healthy hair. Lastly, Vitamin C prevents ingrown toenails and hangnails, some things we don’t ever want to see with those summer sandals! Avocados and tomatoes are fruits best known for their Vitamin E.

This is a vitamin that improves blood circulation, which in turn, sends more oxygen through your body. Oxygen is needed to help your nails grow and to strengthen them. So throw them on your next salad or mix them in a smoothie to enjoy these vibrant fruits in the summer heat. Apples, peaches, bananas and watermelon are known to enhance healthy hair. These fruits contain an ingredient called biotin. It is known as the “natural growth steroid for hair and nails.” Women even use to solve problems with hair loss. By getting more of this nutrient, you can have less brittle and thicker hair with every strand. So indulge in these sweet treats and watch your healthy hair shine. No matter what you do, if you want to improve your body, skin, hair and nails – eat (or bathe in) fruit! Most fruits are at least 90% water, which will keep you from getting dehydrated. Drink your six to eight glasses a day, but put some juicy fruits into that routine as well. They’ll make you feel better, look better and be better. Something all women strive to do!
