Greetings, As we reflect on the last year, we have a lot to be proud of. As our five year Generation Study Abroad Commitment comes to a close, Explorations/Study Abroad is proud to announce we have surpassed our goal of sending 30% of full-time BW students abroad. The percentage has increased from 15% in 2014 to 39% of full time students travelling abroad during the 2018-2019 academic year (compared to the national average of 10%). Participants came from 56 different majors, across all eight schools, and traveled to 22 different countries.
Explorations continues to attract students across all disciplines, including through faculty-led programs that encourage expansion upon campus-based learning while abroad. For example, Zambia: Words in Action, undergraduate theater and film students produced a documentary focusing on how theater can be used to enact social change. Explorations also supported short-term programs to Japan, Ghana, Brazil, China and Costa Rica.
In addition to the expansion of short-term faculty-led programs, Explorations has continued to develop and strengthen long-term independent programs for students. Over the last five years, there has been a 115% increase in full-time undergraduate students studying away for a full semester. This past year, we have formed partnerships with four new universities: Sheffield Hallam and Edge Hill Universities in England, The Danish National School of Performing Arts in Denmark, and have expanded our relationship with Stirling University in Scotland.
We are proud to be a part of Baldwin Wallace’s unwavering commitment to empowering students as they enter an increasingly global society. As Explorations/Study Abroad evaluates our next set of goals for international education, we continue to provide and expand upon opportunities that will help shape Baldwin Wallace students into contributing and compassionate citizens. NATIONAL RECOGNITION Setting Standards In November '18, the Provost, Stephen Stahl, accepted the 2018 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization in recognition of the “innovative” and “sustainable” BW in Zambia Program. This award is considered the most prestigious award in International Education. BW Study Abroad was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2018 Innovators special edition, “2018 Innovators: 6 Programs to Change Classroom Culture” which highlighted our office’s unique approach to faculty involvement in international education.

BW is partnered with over 30 programs around the globe where students have the opportunity to live abroad for a summer, full-semester or academic year and earn BW academic credit. We are always seeking new partnerships to add to our list of recommended programs. New this year are Edge Hill and Sheffield Hallam Universities in England, The Danish National School of Performing Arts in Denmark, and we expanded our partnership with Stirling University in Scotland. Zambia: Words in Action
Faculty-Led study abroad is an off-campus experience that is tied to an intensive on-campus orientation course, which ensures students are prepared academically and culturally for their experience. The travel portion of the program ranges in length from ten to 20 days, where learning continues on the road.
Be on the lookout for the unveiling of BW's first Study Abroad documentary in Fall 2019!
Led by Scott Plate and Duane Battle, students and Zambian Theater artists created a unified cohort that produced an original work of theater, and a documentary film about the process and the final product. BW engaged with community partners in transglobal dialogue via social media prior to meeting and working in person, and explored themes common to all participants. Participants also contributed to creating the documentary film in unique ways - by recording first-person confessional narratives, conducting interviews, capturing the fluid world of play creation as it happened, and by recording environmental imagery.Â

Ghana Beat
Led by Professors Christian Nsiah and Thomas Sutton, 19 students experienced Ghanaian culture, and learned about business practices and politics of Ghana. During the threeweek program, students explored Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast. They also had the opportunity to visit the Ghanaian Parliament, the Embassy, Elmina Castle, as well as Mole National park.
Twenty-three students traveled to Brazil, led by Professors Mary Pisnar and Anthony Dick. Throughout the eighteen-day tour, students visited Rio De Janeiro, Curitiba, Honey Island and Iguazu Falls. While exploring, they experienced Brazilian culture, saw world heritage sites, sports venues, and learned about Brazil’s economy.

This experience was life-changing. Having the chance to engage with the material we learned in class while in Japan was really rewarding. Also, the relationship that I developed with both the professors and the other students was unlike any other class I have had at BW. -Shoukai Japan participant
Shoukai Japan
Twenty-four students traveled to Japan, led by Professors Ken Schneck and Andrew Dohanos, where they learned about social perception and how it impacts intercultural interactions. During the two week program, students explored the cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto while learning about the culture in Japan. Students were hosted by our exchange partner, Kansai Gaidai University, while also visiting Hiroshima, the Imperial Palace, Mount Fuji, and the Peace Memorial Park.

Zambia: Speech language pathology
MBA in China
Fourteen students in the MBA Global Business program traveled to China in the Fall 2018 led by Professors Tony Chen and Shannon Fee. Students traveled throughout China including Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. While learning about international business and Chinese culture, they also visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Hong Kong Disney.
Graduate Programs
Nineteen graduate students in the Speech-Language Pathology program traveled to Zambia, led by professors Chisomo Selemani, Amy Tepper, and Amy Larocca. Students observed and worked alongside practitioners in Zambia at several service sites, including hospitals and schools. While abroad, students also visited Livingstone, where they went on a safari and toured Victoria Falls.

SITE VISITS
Exploratory site visits are the best way for faculty/staff to gain first-hand knowledge about on-site facilities, meet local contacts and gain a better understanding of the culture and local environment. These site visits help maintain and improve program quality, provide accurate and needed information to students, while allowing the university to exercise due diligence in participant safety.

First-Year Experience PRESENTATIONS
Study Abroad and other Experiential Learning efforts were highlighted at Ovation with the support of the Faculty Center. An interactive (drop-in) poster session, focusing on faculty involvement was offered, including ways in which faculty may incorporate international opportunities in their promotion and tenure applications. Study Abroad also had student poster sessions which highlighted their Study Abroad Experiences during the day of excellence.

IN 2018-2019: Study Abroad and the Brain Center for Community Engagement continue to work together to support the Peace Corps Prep program, which brings together purposeful service with intercultural experience to provide a pathway for potential Peace Corps Service after graduation.

STUDENTS COMPLETED THE CERTIFICATE
Olivia Pollack '19 an international studies and public health major, studied abroad in Spain with ISA at the University of Menendez Pelayo in Fall 2017. She also completed an internship in summer 2017 in Guatemala with our partner Mission Guatemala. In addition, she represented BW at the Model United Nations in Washington D.C. In August 2019, she will begin working as a Peace Corp volunteer in Lesotho working with the community on HIV and AIDS health and education. Mamdouh El-Mahdy '19, a Public Health major, studied abroad in Fall 2017 in Japan at Kansai Gaidai University. Mamdouh also volunteers with the Brain Center for Community Engagement by participating in the Campus Kitchen and Alternative Break programs. He also completed an internship with the Cleveland Food Bank. He hopes to be a Peace Corps volunteer and plans to continue his studies in medical school.
Clara Harb '19, a biology and French language major and President of MECC, studied in France at Micefa during summer 2018 focussing on both French language and culture as well as medical and public health. She plans to move back to France in order to teach English and to apply to medical school. Morocco

HEALTH AND SAFETY Preparing faculty and students for a safe journey.
With consistent growth in the number of BW faculty, staff and students actively engaged in international education Explorations/Study Abroad continues to strengthen its efforts to support travelers. Student safety is our first priority. For example, Faculty leading programs are required to attend two workshops prior to departure that focus on maintaining a safe and high-quality program from beginning to end. Beyond individual advising, BW requires all study abroad students to attend predeparture orientation sessions to prepare and provide them with the information needed to make wise decisions for staying safe and healthy while abroad. Site visits to faculty-led program destinations and/or exchange program locations are completed on a regular basis. Faculty are provided with a resource guide which supports their efforts in preparing students before departure and during the program. Study Abroad staff uses multiple sources to stay informed: The U.S. Department of State, OSAC, Geoblue International Health Insurance and local on-site coordinators.

We often hear that studying abroad "Changes Lives." But, does it really? Research shows a direct impact on creativity, critical thinking, and student success. In addition, studies show that study abroad plays an important role in developing an intercultural mindset and skills, like adaptability, confidence and team building--which are skills necessary to be successful in our increasingly global society.
