Looking back and forward “A collection inspired by the Scandinavian classics mixed with Mediterranean and Japanese influences.” This is the first collection of the new brand By.Enströms. The brand represents more than 100 years of history related to the furniture industry. During all those years the company has kept a close relationship with the craftsmanship, always trying to preserve values such as tradition, passion about design and the quality of their products. Everything starts with the idea of combining quality, tradition, craftsmanship and new design influences. Kaaja Collection is the result of this idea reflected through materials and shapes. It is a collection designed to create a relationship with you that will grow stronger through time. This catalogue offers the possibility of going through the design and production process of this collection. The designer’s thoughts behind the collection, the production issues faced during the process and the final results are presented in several texts and images.

Kaaja Collection
Tibro is a small village in a Swedish region where furniture is one of the main industries. Kaaja Collection was born as the first collection of a brand. This collection should be connected to the brand and, at the same time, it should have a unique personality. Kaaja Collection is a new interpretation of the classic Scandinavian cabinets that were made in the same factory around 50 years ago. The pieces from Kaaja Collection combine the soul of the classics with new forms inspired by Mediterranean and Japanese cultures.
The goal was to create a new collection where the soul of the Scandinavian classics, the old traditions of the company and new design influences were blended into new shapes. From the beginning, Carlos JimÊnez wanted to create a collection of cabinets where every detail would be studied. In the classic Scandinavian sideboards, there was always a strong differentiation between the legs and the body of the cabinet. One of Carlos’ main objectives while designing was to make a natural integration between the body and the legs. The result is a cabinet that can be understood as one single element.
5
Unique pieces The collection presents a modular system that allows people to customize each cabinet. People will be able to choose the inside modules, the colors of them and the wood finishes. Once the cabinet is ready, it is stamped and numbered, making it unique. Details in mind The design of the cabinets consists on the combination of curves and straight lines. The external shapes are dominated by curves and rounded forms. Carlos JimĂŠnez wanted to create cabinets that would present interesting details from every angle. The connection between the legs and the body is visible from sides and front. The round edges are also visible from every angle.
Cabinets that would present interesting details from every angle. The curves on the legs and on the edges were studied through many sketches and trials in order to get perfect and balanced shapes and transitions between the elements. On the other hand, the modules present straight lines, creating a perfect combination between the internal and the external shapes.

Kaaja Collection. From ideas to real
While developing the Kaaja Collection there were many ideas, concepts and decisions to take into account. However, design and quality were always the main cores during the process. Sketches, drawings, mock-ups, prototypes, and hours of meetings were allocated in order to achieve the final result. Tradition and technology This collection is a new reinterpretation of the classic Scandinavian cabinets. This means that its design should combine traditional and new influences. During the process, fine craftmanship and modern technology are fused in the factory. The body and the legs are made in solid ash wood specially prepared for these furniture pieces. These parts are treated with varnish that protects the wood and creates a beautiful and soft surface. The modules are made in high quality MDF lacquered with matte paint or covered with ash veneer.
Craftsmanship is in all the pieces. Every element is sanded by hand several times, ensuring a perfect surface to the touch. Once all the pieces are ready, they are assembled by hand. Highly qualified hands are behind all the process, taking care of every detail and being sure that every cabinet is perfect. Tools have been developed in order to achieve the perfection on the details. The legs are made on an automated lathe and finished by hand in a traditional lathe.
Every piece is specially made for each cabinet, making them unique. Every cabinet contains part of the soul of the company. The MDF modules are made with precise tolerances that allow people to move them inside the cabinet, being able to change the disposition of them in every moment.

Kaaja Collection. Not just cabinets Kaaja Collection is the first collection for By.EnstrÜms. This means that it could not be just a furniture collection. It had to represent the values of the company and it had to be a reference for the upcoming products. The different approaches ended up with the idea of creating cabinets. However, the style developed was something that could be applied not just to these cabinets. With that in mind, the idea of keep designing pieces to be included on the collection came up. This is how the KT-1 coffee table was born. And it won’t be the last piece of this collection. Everything is about details The KT-1 table presents the same details than the cabinets. The legs seems to grow out of the board and the curves and organic shapes are combined with straight lines in a well balanced composition.
21
The trays are one of the main elements of this table. They can be used as part of the rack or they can be used as portable trays. The top of the legs is visible from top view. The marks of the tools are visible as a detail that shows the traditional way of making this piece.
The trays can be used as portable trays or as a part of the rack. Everything is made in solid ash. The table is finished in white pigmented oil. The trays are finished with a touch of color on the sides.

The collection and the designer. During all its history, Enströms has been a family company that has always tried to be innovative while preserving old traditions. And this is what By.Enströms presents through the new Kaaja Collection. The Spanish designer Carlos Jiménez understood and shared the same philosophy from the first moment they talked. The first thing he did was to dig into the Enströms’ history in order to get to know about the company. He carried out some research and he went through many of the old drawings from Enströms’ files.
After three years of living in Sweden, Carlos’ designs are always influenced by the Scandinavian simplicity. However, he always tries to combine those influences with his Mediterranean roots where playful and organic shapes take centre stage. This time he also got inspired by the Japanese shapes in wood. In a company that has been related to carpentry industry for more than 100 years, it is no surprise that the main material of the products has to be wood. Carlos wanted to create pieces where that long tradition into the wood industry could be shown to people. With this idea in mind, he started creating concepts where details became the main focus. “I like how forms transforms into others while being part of a same unit. I wanted to create cabinets that could be understood as a single body.” - Carlos Jiménez

Carlos Jiménez wanted to create pieces that could be interesting to the viewer from every angle. When looking at any piece of the Kaaja Collection people will always find something interesting, something to touch or admire. Looking at them from the sides, people will find the lines of the wood; from the front, the colorful straight lines mixed with the curves will attract the attention. From every angle, people will be able to see the legs and the rounded edges. And finally, if very curious, they will look underneath and they will find a beautiful surprise on the shape of the legs.

MODULAR SYSTEM. Open module.

Doors module.
Kaaja Collection consists on a modular system that allows people to create and customize their own cabinets. People could choose among open boxes, modules with doors and modules with drawers. Then, they will be able to customize the size and finishes of each module. Finally, they can display the modules in different positions inside the cabinets, being able to move them around every time they want to change how the cabinet looks like.
Different finishes Wood pieces are made in solid ash and they are presented in two different finishes: natural oil and white pigmented oil. The modules are made in high quality MDF and they are presented in matte color finishes and ash veneer. Open module.
Both doors and drawers modules have a “push to open mechanism to open them that keeps the clean and minimalistic look.
34
MODULAR SYSTEM.
Thinking on the best way to divide the space according to proportions, Carlos Jiménez developed this modular system based on a 6x6 grid. This means that each module could be made in 36 different sizes.
Different types of modules There are 6 types of modules to combine when creating the composition. The open modules can have shelves inside. The “doors modules” are presented with one and two doors and they can also include shelves inside. Finally, the “drawers modules” are presented with one, two and three drawers. With all these modules and the different finishes, the possibilities are almost infinite.
