Design a calendar for this semester’s Sam Fox events. The calendar must function as both a source of information (the event title, speaker, time, date, location, synopsis) and as a poster to advertise/call attention to the school’s programming. It must be designed as a twosided poster. You will need to develop a grid and typographic system that is flexible and accomodates the various types of content for ease of navigation through the materials and an expressive, effective delivery. Work with provided list of events and images. Your calendar must include the full title “Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts” and Sam Fox logo, but does not need to adhere to Sam Fox brand standards.

type Up to 2 type families

color Unlimited, but should reinforce message

size Larger than 11x17 inches, but otherwise unlimited

Krannert Art Museum Fall 2010 Calendar

When I was first assigned this project, I was excited to explore grids and typographic systems. I had designed and illustrated monthly calendars for my campus job, Ursa’s Nite Life, but had never designed an event calendar containing multiple months. The professors uploaded photos of example calendars and brought books for us to look at. These examples led me to think about type size, scale, colors, image treatment, grid systems, and layout.

Sample of the events list

I also looked at the list of events occuring this semester in order to get a sense of the information I was working with. The list included each event’s month, date, event type, title, time, location, and additional notes. The Kemper Museum, WashU’s very own art museum, is fortunate enough to have an Ai Wei Wei exhibit and lectures here. I figured these events could be highlighted somehow. I also looked at the images provided for us to use, namely those for Duane Slick, Yvonne Farrell, and Ai Weiwei.

discovery 8 We were first assigned to create thumbnails and style the content from the event list. I thought about what I as a viewer would want to see emphasized on a calendar, and first explored emphasizing the event date using scale. I chose to include the day of the week because I personally need that extra piece of information while looking at an event flyer to quickly decide if I am able to attend or not. While creating these styles, I used an event from the event list and explored different typefaces. My professor encouraged me to try emphasizing a different aspect besides the date, so I began exploring ways to highlight the event name as well.

1. Read, view, organize and classify all the content provided. Make sure to read the assignment carefully as well as it will help you to better work through these first stages of your planning and design. There are 30 events total.

needs to say “sam fox school fall calendar” etc and have logo on both sides (doesn’t have to be same size) need to know it’s: sam fox, fall calendar, 2019,

2. Pick out examples of each type of text on the calendar (i.e., Event Name, Time/Location, Description, Body) and generate options for the typesetting of this content. See if you can find 10 different systems for doing so (yes, that number is a challenge). Unless you are working on a PC, please begin with typefaces on our CDES type server.

-showcases/promotes events -don’t have to use every img (can edit colors). must use imgs in box folder -probably start placing imgs to see space left -leave white space! don’t fill up every sq inch of page w/events. use contrast in negative space -color key??? for diff series

3. Thumbnail both sides of the poster. Work on ways of presenting the calendar content and ways of showing the images. How can you use different sizes and styles of type in a purposeful way to distinguish content? How can you use the images provided? How can you form a grid that works with the content? How will the design function across a room, at arms length, in the hand?

9 In later iterations, I explored differentiating between types of events (lectures, exhibits, film screenings, and miscellaneous) by using a color key. I picked these colors from the Sam Fox logo, which uses some of the default CYMK swatches on InDesign. Some of these (the ones that use the event type color in the event title) felt too busy. My professor cautioned me to use color meaningfully and effectively without overwhelming the viewer. Sam Fox logo, 3-line color version

At this point, I began thinking about different dimensions to make my calendar. For my first iterations, I looked at using standard sizes (such as 24x36 inches) and multiples of 11x17 inches, the size I am most familiar with. I also considered the benefits of a horizontal versus a vertical calendar, but leaned towards making mine vertical due to my professor’s recommendation. For my first full-sized tile print, I brought in the calendar below, a 24x36 inch hulking mass of paper bigger than myself. While the text was easy to read due to its size, I felt that 24x36 inches was too big. In this version, I also treated the images by using a gradient map of blue and orange. My professor warned me against using such a strong coloration, especially with artists’ works. I agreed and stopped using gradient maps on the images.

One of my biggest problems with these layouts was the ambiguity to which the events flow chronologically. I felt that one could easily mistake, say, an October event for a Septmeber event due to the top to bottom flow. In terms of image placement, I considered edge relations with the sides of the poster as well as proximity (in distance) to the event the image represented. I also created thumbnails that considered different placements.

After seeing my peers’ calendars, I felt that mine made sense structurally but was a little too unimaginative and simple in terms of the layout and Sam Fox-adjacent color schemes. I thought, “What if I made something completely different?” and created a new iteration of my calendar. To address the aforementioned biggest problem with my previous calendars, I explicitly grouped events by month and made it so the viewer would read the events from left to right rather than from top to bottom. I also changed the dimensions again by making it thinner and longer.

I felt that this iteration was more intuitive (monthly calendars read from left to right) and allowed for more white space. I chose to move forward with it.

14 When making the other side of the poster (let’s call it the front and the events side the back), I thought about how to relate both sides to each other by echoing certain elements and considering edge relations.

SAM FOX SCHOOL OF VISUAL ART & DESIGN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS

SAM FOX SCHOOL OF DESIGN &VISUAL ARTS

I chose to use photographs of Yvonne Farrel’s work that I enjoyed. These ended up echoing the grid structure of the events. I used a gradient map (but just for the front) on the image using pinks, blues, and oranges from the back. My professor recommended using vertical type to echo the vertical months on the back.

16 The tangram (Chinese: 七巧板; pinyin: qīqiăobăn; literally: ‘seven boards of skill’) is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only an outline or silhouette) using all seven pieces, which can not overlap. It is reputed to have been invented in China during the Song Dynasty, and then carried over to Europe by trading ships in the early 19th century. It became very popular in Europe for a time then, and then again during World War I. It is one of the most popular dissection puzzles in the world. —Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia

Numbers and animals made with tangrams (fox at bottom right)

17 At the start of this project, I remember thinking “what If I used tangrams to create a fox?” but pushed that idea aside. But at this point, I re-entertained that idea. This is, after all, the Sam Fox School—despite being named after a real person, Sam Fox is a very image-driven name. Why tangrams? Much like events in a month or disciplines in the Sam Fox School or schools within a university, they’re shapes that fit together to create one larger shape (a perfect square). They’re extremely old puzzles that people still use today to create shapes of any kind, including foxes.

Fox tangrams in different poses

I created tangrams and constructed a fox out of them.

SEPTEMBER

After finally deciding to move forward with my tangram idea, I created iterations of the front and the back, a whopping 36 in total. My original desire was to have tangram pieces scattered around on one side and the fox on the other side to let the viewer have a little “aha!” moment when they realize the fox was made from the same shapes. However, this ultimately did not pan out due to the somewhat awkward negative space the fox creates around itself.

While iterating, I carefully considered how each side relates to the other. This included making many, many adjustments such as tweaking leading between different paragraph styles, debating whether or not to rotate the tangrams on the back, how the tangrams interacted with the text, what colors to make the tangrams on both sides, placement and treatment of logo, how to highlight certain events, how to display the names of artists and lecturers on the front, and finalizing typefaces (Din and Intro) and the color palette.

30 criticism

30

For critique, our professors brought in designers from the Sam Fox publicity office. Audrey Westcott, Senior Graphic Designer, explained what kind of features the office would hypothetically look for in a Sam Fox calendar. Her main points included: having “Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts” instead of just “Sam Fox,” whether the design can be carried over to the Spring semester, if all artists and guest lecturers are treated well (due to the time and energy they are putting into the school), and if there is a clear sense of hierarchy throughout. I appreciated her insight on what a client would be looking for. If I were to redo this project, I would think more carefully about giving guest lecturers the same importance as artists (though she did acknowledge that Ai Weiwei is a hugely important figure in the art world and therefore a good selling point). The first thing she said about my calendar was that she enjoyed the fox. I appreciated this because I was a bit hesitant to put a smaller version of the fox in my poster, albeit on both sides of it. She also enjoyed the color palette and clear hierarchy. One thing my professor pointed out was that the “School of Design & Visual Arts Fall

2019 Events on the front was set in Din, which felt too condensed for that block of text. After critique, I set that text in Intro and the artist/lecture list in Din to alleviate that problem.
