Fletcher Prentice

Fletcher's work is a celebration of the natural world, but also a celebration of paint itself. The textures, colours and freedom of paint fascinates the artist, and through his work he explores this medium in the same way as he does his chosen subject. “My work is a constant striving to balance on the one hand my fascination with the object – using paint and enjoying the qualities of paint, breaking down and semi-abstracting the subject matter and surface – and on the other hand my desire to retain and capture the natural beauty of the subject, whether the human figure, an animal or a single bird.” Although the exuberant characters and colours of exotic birdlife are an inspiration to him, he has recently become drawn to wildlife closer to home- the more domestic beauty of the birds and plants in his own rural garden.

Jack Frame

Critically acclaimed Jack Frame graduated from the renowned Glasgow School of Art in 2007 with a sell-out degree show. He was tipped early on as one of the most collectable young artists in the UK after receiving the GSA Painting award and the Prize for Landscape Drawing. In 2009 he was a winner of the Jolomo Landscape Art prize. While artist in residence at The Lomond School, Jack was included in the BBC Documentary'Glasgow Boys’ exposing his work to a wider audience. Jack is most noted for his striking depictions of trees and sky, which have a haunting grace and solemnity. Trees have always been a focal point of the artist’s work, the blossoming cherry in particular a recurring theme throughout his practice. As if with the awe of a child, he paints these trees almost as monuments, as the compositional focal point of each work and often set against his trademark gold backdrop. Jack’s work is included in many public and private collections including the Standard Life building, Glasgow School of Art Mackintosh building and Friends of GSA. His patrons include Muriel Gray, Mathew Bellany from the band Muse and Kate Hudson among others.

Adrian Parnell

“Landscape painting for me should try to include the play of light, textures, surfaces and atmospheres of a place. A painting is only about layers of time and paint, the subject which started the creative process is overtaken by the exploration, experimentation and excitement of what emerges on the canvas. The time spent on a work is an immersive reconnoitre leading to the finished picture which in turn leads to the next adventure. For the past four decades Adrian Parnell has been creating paintings and drawings that chart a continuing visual engagement with the landscape. His upbringing in North Devon initiated this love of the natural world, while a training at St Martins and the Slade during the 1970s perfected the skills with which he became able to document it. Adrian is a Lifetime Associate Member of the Penwith Society St. Ives and has exhibited regularly in London at the RCA British Art Fair, the London Contemporary and galleries in Amsterdam and New York.

Bridget Bailey

Bridget Bailey calls her work ‘organised chaos’. She comes from a fashion background, having studied textiles at West Surrey College of Art. In 1990 she co-founded the Bailey Tomlin brand, designing and producing millinery for labels such as Jean Muir, Mulberry, and Liberty. Since 2010 Bridget’s practice has changed direction to using the techniques and materials of textiles and millinery to make artworks. The materials and textiles that Bridget used while working in millinery are still heavily present in her works. However, she has found new ways to use them- whether it’s laying velvet under veiling for a furry bee’s bottom, winding thread to make a tiny midge, or sewing lavender stems into a flowing tangle with tiny stitches. Some materials cant be bought, like the parakeet feathers for intricately cut feather barley, so collecting is also an important part of the making process.

Penkridge Ceramics

Lorraine Taylor and Nicky Smart’s still life studies in clay form a unique body of work which is now regarded as the best in its field. Their influence lies in tromp l’oeil and early still life painting of fruits. All the work that goes into making each piece- the designing, modelling and mould making, glazing and hand finishing is carried out at their studio in Walsall, near Birmingham. The only aspect of the work not done in the studio is their range of metal leaves and twigs. These are designed and produced by Sculptor Alan Ballantyne. This is a relatively new development to the range, which adds an extra dimension to the work by creating individual pieces of ‘still life’ that can stand alone as sculptural works in their own right, as well as giving that final touch to a grouping of fruits. Each piece in the range is individually considered, with several layers of glaze added to create both colour and texture giving a ‘super real’ effect, which provokes first surprise and immense interest in the accuracy of the finish. Their pieces have been collected by a number of private individuals, galleries and interior designers in the UK and abroad.

Jane Muir

Jane Muir’s idiosyncratic hand-painted figures represent a witty and uncluttered observation of the world. Her charming characters are hand modelled. Their recognisable and individual traits are perhaps due to the freedom of the artist’s chosen medium- she uses clay, allowing her to develop her ideas during the making process. Subtle colour and seductive surface textures are key elements in her work; immensely appealing but never sentimental. Inspiration comes from various sources- from Peter Blake, Eduardo Paolozzi and Elizabeth Frink to more traditional craftwork such as that of the Staffordshire Potters. Jane’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, Europe, America and Japan.

Vicky Yates

Vicky came upon ceramic sculpture rather late in life, having had a totally unrelated professional background in the NHS. During her training, she attended courses run by outstanding professional sculptors such as Brendan Hesmondhalgh, Annie Peaker, Lorri Aucott, Beth Cavener Sticher and Paul Priest. Vicky is fascinated by hares and many other wild animals she has seen both in the Cumbrian countryside and on safaris whilst working in Tanzania. The artist usually works in stoneware so the sculptures can be safely left outside. She decorates her work with oxides and underglazes and occasionally gold leaf.

JJ Vincent

Cambridge based artist JJ Vincent creates hand-made ceramic animal sculptures. The emphasis on each piece lies in individual character and expression, ranging from his highly stylised hares to the more anatomically accurate pet portrait commissions. Initially self-taught, JJ has always had a “natural tendency to do, make and understand everything.” He is fascinated by clay- the fact that we can take what is essentially mud, and, using a little imagination, produce something that has the potential of invoking emotional response for decades, if not centuries. In the artist’s own words, “I will probably not be around then, but it is reassuring to think that my fingerprints will be.”

Bob Race

Each Bob Race pot is unique. Each is painstakingly hand-built, sometimes glazed on the interior, while the exteriors feature a modern, minimalist aesthetic. He focuses on texture with the colours restricted to powder white and deep or coppery rusts with subtle verdigris. Patterns are understated and restful. These pots are quiet on the eye, so you should never become tired of their presence. After leaving art college, Bob worked in the advertising industry for many years until – in a mid-life leap of faith – he returned to his first love, ceramics. His previous work has featured in a number of discriminating private collections, such as that of Dali’s biographer, Fleur Cowles Mayer. He is also well-known nationally for the workshops he runs for the NHS and various private organisations. He took a gap from making his own work and returned to Byard in October last year with this new direction. The work for the Garden Delights exhibition is a response to both formal and informal lines, and restfulness, in the English garden.

Lucy Burley

Lucy Burley studied Ceramics at Wimbledon and Camberwell Art Schools, graduating with a BA Honours in 1996. She works from her studio in the Hampshire countryside, from which she makes her range of ceramics. She sells through numerous galleries, shops and craft fairs. Her vessels are thrown on the wheel using white earthenware clay. She developed a semi-matt earthenware glaze, smooth to the touch, to which she adds oxides and stains to obtain a wide spectrum of colours. Lucy’s work is both decorative and functional. She finds her inspiration through the still lives of artist Giorgio Morandi, wanting her work to have the same harmony of form and colour.

Sarah Grove

“My range of functional jugs and vases fulfil my love of both clay and stitch. As a small child I pressed clay into surfaces and formed it around jars. Now I take the delicate nature of textiles and make them permanent in porcelain. An interest in clay and stitch were passed to me by my mother and likewise handmade textiles and precious ceramics are passed from generation to generation.” Sarah Grove graduated in Ceramics from Camberwell College of Art in 1996, and has since been exhibiting her sumptuous pieces at design shows and prestigious galleries across the UK. Sarah plays with the concept and texture of textiles with her work, pressing porcelain slabs into plaster casts of deeply stuffed upholstered padding, buttoned silk, waffle and mock ostrich. She says of her work,“There is a contrast between the soft pillow forms of the fabric and the cold, unyielding nature of the porcelain.” The interiors of her ceramic pots reveal the artists workings and finger prints, left to reveal the presence of the maker with each individual piece.

Mud + Water Ceramics “ “Our style is Victorian High Tea with a splash of Tim Burton darkness. We gravitate towards rich colours and lots of pattern - florals and foliage. Each piece is unique and designs are made only in small batches.” Mud + Water Ceramics was formed in 2017 on the Cambridgeshire and Essex borders, by Gaëlle Curtin and Lynn Parsons. The artists call it a kitchen table business- the idea was thought up around a kitchen table, the works are often created on the same surface, and objects made often find their home there again. Ceramics include handmade stoneware for everyday use, decorative raku pieces and ceramic art dolls. Mud + Water are a regular part of the Cambridge makers landscape. They can be found at All Saints Garden Art & Craft Market, as well as at Cambridge Folk Festival and at many local Christmas craft fairs.
