The FDU does not require a separate computer or database. Hotel management can control any aspect of the system and view, print or save a lock or FDU audit directly from the FDU. The FDU communicates with the user through text messages on a backlit LCD screen, and all functions are conveniently menu-driven. Its simple menus, available in a choice of languages, are easy to follow. The major functions of the FDU can be learned in minutes. The FDU encodes keycards and programs and audits locks. With a minimum eight-hour battery backup, the FDU can continue to manage the system even during a power failure. It can be used to program locks or register guests away from the front desk, without needing to plug into a power outlet or a computer terminal. Full audit tracking capability is built into the FDU, which records the details of the last 4,000 transactions, including the operator ID of the employee operating the unit. Together with the lock audit trail, this information can determine not only which keycard was used to open a door, but also who issued that keycard. Guest Service Attendants at the front desk use the FDU primarily to encode Guest keycards, while management can use the FDU to make the keycards required by staff and to set the system parameters, time zones, hotel public area usage, system language and keycard expires. The FDU has a serial port for communication with a Property Management System (PMS) and for printing audits or a record of staff keycard encoding and USB ports for transferring data to a PC.
