We celebrate the launch of a museum to celebrate his life and times and his contributions to all of Zimbabweans lives. INTWASA TAKES TALENT SHOW TO EZIKO Intwasa Arts Festval koBulawayo took the second audition of their Bulawayo’s Most Amazing Talents to Eziko Theatre Laboratory at the Indlovu Youth Centre in Tshabalala. The auditions attracted 20 acts mainly in music, dancing and poetry. The event was graced by Bulawayo’s arts ambassadors Black Umfolosi. A sizeable crowd braved the

INTWASA ARTS FESTIVAL 2012 EXHIBITION Artists are invited to submit works i.e. photography, video, installation and sound artworks for selection for the 2012 exhibition that will open on the 20th of September.

Please Note – The Emphasis is on photography, video and sound media. We are not looking at whether an artist deals precisely with sound, video and photography full time. Artists who wish to present installations or assemblage work are also urged to present their work or make proposals. BOOKS INTWASA POETRY Intwasa Poetry, 2008

Intwasa Poetry is a book of memorable poems by fifteen poets who have read from their work at the Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo.The Zimbabwean poets in the book are Julius Chingono, Chirikure Chirikure, John Eppel, Ignatius Mabasa, Shepherd Mandhlazi, Judy Maposa, Deon Marcus, Albert Nyathi, Pathisa Nyathi, Mthabisi Phili and John S. Read.From outside Zimbabwe, the poets are Owen Sheers and Lloyd Robson from Wales, Véronique Tadjo from Côte d’Ivoire/South Africa and Joelle Taylor from London. There are poems of love, of sensuality, of humour, of compassion, of yearning, of sadness, of loss and of outrage. They range from the intensely personal to reflections of life at this pivotal time in Zimbabwe’s history.

This little book contains some of the most captivating poetry published in Zimbabwe. The message of social justice is present throughout and the poets are voicing concerns about the ills of society, even where the work may seem introspective. Emmanuel Sigauke, Galatea Resurrects.

Dancing with Life is a collection of short stories by Christopher Mlalazi. He has had stories published in anthologies inside and outside Zimbabwe, but this is his first collection. Mlalazi himself dwells in one of the townships he so convincingly brings to vibrant life in his writing.

Mlalazi is an important author whose work should be found in all serious collections of contemporary African literature. Dancing with Life was featured book of the month for August 2008 on the African Books Collective Website, and the cover of the book is that of the cover of the African Books Collective catalogue for 2008. Dancing with Life kept me awake half the night. Funny, sad, energetic - take's you into the heart of the townships. I'd not advise anyone to read Chris’ novels without first reading these short stories, otherwise they'll completely miss the point. Tendai Huchu, Writer

MUSIC NOTHING LESS THAN REAL Dope Donnz Cartel and Yung Tyran titled Nothing Less Than Real and yes, our local rappers can bring that American heat in the BYO I just bumped into a mixtape by Dope Donnz Cartel and Yung Tyran titled Nothing Less Than Real and yes, our local rappers can bring that American heat in the BYO. You would be forgiven for thinking it’s an American mixtape but then again we can’t use that against them as it is fresh though. The mixtape is 12tracks deep with 2 interludes. Fresh concepts and ideas on tracks and great potential from Yung Tyran. I am looking forward for more heat from him because with rhymes like, with all these rocks on my neck they got me feeling stoned” homeboy got me “Still On The Grind”. Unfortunately the tape has a slow start as the first track “ Famous” is a nice idea but is let down but poor vocal mixing. The taps then picks up from track 2 “Get Cash” featuring Navy Seal as it has more clear vocals and is more listener worthy as Yung Tyran and Navy Seal ride the beat like it’s a rodeo. It’s songs like this with a nice production and dope bars that make you wonder why you have never had of such talented guys. Third track featuring Treva S Fresh is a mellow content filled track for the ladies titled “The World Is Ours” which adds the much needed variety to the mixtape. Track 4 titled “The Realest” is definitely a sing along with a dope catchy hook and bouncy beat. Otherwise “Still On The Grind” and “Get Cash” are BYO classics in my eyes. Yes, I said it! Homeboy got a lot of potential and a worthwhile tape out so go out and get yourself a copy of Nothing Less Than Real it has something for the ladies, hustlers and general hip hop lovers. BYO Stand UP!

INTERVIEW TALKING VIDEOS WITH ANDY CUTTA A lot of people have been asking us who does music videos in Bulawayo so, by popular demand we are featuring a film expert known as Andy Cutta to let you in on how he operates… It’s been noted that there’s a lack of visual representation in Bulawayo. D-G-V! then decided to look for a film expert to highlight for everyone to familiarize with. So, before we put him on the hot seat we decided to first of all let the public know who he is and what work he has done and also how you can get hold of him if you’re looking for that very important visual presence. To all those that thought videos are not necessarily important well, we have news for you. Who is Andy Cutta? My name is Andy Sobhuza professionally a Video & Audio Producer, affectionately known as Andy Cutta in the Video and Audio Industry. I have been involved in the field of Video and Audio Production for many years now. I’ve since come back from South Africa with the aim of putting people of this land on the map with high quality videos that will compete with other regional and international music videos. I mainly work with (Director of Photography) DOP and Cinematographer Trevor Ncube on some projects as he also has that unique eye and thirst for greatness in the field of Film.

A few that I’ve worked with include P.O.Y, J Curtis, SKR, Mexxus and recently PoZee. I specialize in production design cutting & finishing to make sure that the visual that I see in my head is what you’ll see on your television.

TUMBUKA TO BLOOM AT INTWASA 2012 Tumbuka Dance Company, one of Zimbabwe’s well known dance ambassadors, is scheduled to perform at this year’s Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo. The company is known for revolutionising dance by developing unique and socially relevant images that and Africa. With its well-trained dancers the company strives to be socially relevant by addressing the psychosocial realities and complexities of mainly Zimbabwean life for

both the community and its company of dancers. Tumbuka integrates elements of traditional dance with contemporary idioms, movement, and the use of an eclectic selection of music- live or recorded.

The musical composition includes various artists f rom Africa, the USA, France as well as live songs, mbira and drums from Zimbabwe. Various languages from the North and the continent are used in the spoken word component of the piece. It involves live on-stage painting, roller-skating, visuals and a metal cube with elastic strings on wheels that enables the dancers to express the contours and dynamics of invisibility.

Their coming to Intwasa, particularly in the year of blooming, is no coincidence. The company will be showcasing two of the latest pieces; Between the Lines and Breath of Origins. Betweens the lines was premiered at HIFA. It is a contemporary piece Harold George, a choreographer from Sierra Leone /Belgium.

In Breath of Origins the ensemble explores chained souls, the voices of the unheard, and the body that always remembers to give something that is alive as each problem is solved and new ones arise.

Father Zimbabwe

Dr. Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo was born on the 7th of June 1917. He attended primary school at London Missionary Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tjimali School after which he went to Tsholotsho native Government industrial School. From Tsholotsho he proceeded to Adams College in South Africa.

He then went to Hofmeyr School of Social Science where he obtained a diploma in Social Science after which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Africa. Dr. Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo dedicated his entire adult life to fighting for the liberation of Zimbabwe from the yoke of colonialism. He started his career as president of the Rhodesian Railways African Employees Association in 1948 after which he became the president of the federation of African Workers Union in 1954, a National office that launched him into his political career. Between 1948 and 1987 he spearheaded and led a number of political parties namely the African National Congress (ANC) in 1948; the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 1960; after NDP was banned he formed ZAPU in1961. When ZAPU was banned in 1962 he became president of the Peoples Caretaker Council (PCC).

‘the yoke of colonialism’ When the PCC was banned in 1963 DR Joshua Nkomo was sentenced to a lengthy (ten years) imprisonment at Gonakudzingwa. Upon his release In 1974 Dr. Joshua Nkomo became chairman of the Revolutionary Council of ZAPU as well as commander in chief of ZIPRA (Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army). In 1976 he and the ZANU Leader Robert Mugabe forged unity between ZAPU and ZANU called the Patriotic Front. This lead to the two jointly leading the Patriotic Front delegation to the Geneva Conference in 1976 and the Lancaster House Conference in 1979. It was at this conference that the Rhodesian regime surrendered to majority rule.

THE JOSHUA NKOMO MUSEUM On the 22nd of December, 1987 Dr. Joshua Nkomo and Prime Minister Robert Mugabe sighed the historic Unity Accord which united PF-ZAPU and ZANU(PF).

On the 6th of August, 1990 Dr. Joshua Nkomo was sworn in as the Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, a post which he held until his death on the 1st of July, 1999 after which he was conferred with the national hero status and buried at the National Heroes Ace in Harare.

The museum celebrates the life, work struggle and philosophies of one of the greatest 20thcentury leaders. Following the death of Dr Joshua Nkomo on the 1st of July 1999, the Themba Trust and Nkomo Family decided to turn his Matsheunhlope residence into a museum to honour his life and achievements. The museum is a legacy initiative established in honour of the work of Father Zimbabwe. The museum is a non-[rofit, non-govenmental, non-political and non-sectarian initiative managed by a board of trustees of Joshua Nkomo National Foundation. The museum fulfills the dreams and aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe that her great heroes and heroines should be honoured and cherished for all time. Indeed, the captured story of Dr. Joshua Nkomo should helop the future generations to develop home frown strategies to maintain unity as espoused by Father Zimbabwe, Dr. Joshua Nkomo. The museum seeks to document and trace the collective memory and effectively show the life and times of Dr. Joshua Nkomo. The museum is part of a private and public sector effort to ensure that, as Zimbabweans, we capture, remember and celebrate the totality of the Zimbabwean history, particularly those aspects of our history that will inspire, motivate and educate generations to come.

THE LION & THE JEWEL AT INTWASA The Centre for Talent Development (CTD), a theatre training project established in 2011 will be back at the Intwasa stage with another hilarious dose of Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and The Jewel. With a cast of eight vibrant and ambitious actors Bulawayo CTD hopes to thrill its young audiences again – the audience for the play is mainly students studying the play at O’ Level. Last year the Centre brought down the house with their focused and intelligent interpretation of Soyinka’s most recognised work.

The Lion and the Jewel is Soyinka’s best known plays that uses an interesting fusion of traditional and modern imagery with Soyinka artistically revealing the interesting modernalisation. It is a classic story which tells how Baroka, the village chief, outpaces the modernist Lakunle in the quest to get the hand of the village belle Sidi.

The vision of the centre is to use drama to support educators across the country by developing live dramatizations of literature texts studied in the classroom. The simple objective is to provide high quality and well researched performances that satisfy educators’ and students’ needs within the classroom.

The cast includes Trevor Siyani as Lankule, Charmaine Mudau as the beautiful Sidi, Hezel Sibanda as Favourite, Bathabile Dlamini as Sadiku and seasoned and gifted actor Gift Chakuvinga as Baroka. The play is directed by Thabani Hilary Moyo, a graduate of the UZ theatre arts department.

Mokoomba is a six member band born in the resort town of Victoria Falls and now based in Harare. The group was formed by the late legendary guitarist Alfred Mujimba in 2008. That same year, the groupwent on to win the Music Crossroads Inter-regional Competitions in Lilongwe, Malawi.The internationally traveled Mokoomba are scheduled to be part of Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo 2012 program in September.The group has performed in big European Festivals in countries like Italy, Spain, Belgium, Norway and Austria.Regionally the group has toured Mozambique, Zambia, and Malawi. Mokoomba has also featured at HIFA. Mokoomba are well known for their electrifying blend of Afro-fusion and tantalizing traditional Tonga rhythms. This exciting Tonga group from Binga certainly has a unique sound rooted in Tonga tradition and promises to take the world of music by storm. The band mixes a number of indigenous languages such as Luvale, Nyanja, Mbunda, and Chokwe which are part of the Tonga dialect. The group fuses modern instruments and Tonga traditional instruments like Jemba and the bell to create tantalizing and danceable traditional rhythms.

The Bulawayo audience will have an opportunity to sample their songs during Intwasa Arts Festival. The group is known for their hit songs umvundla and Messe Messe.Messe Messe is making waves on the underground international dance music charts. In their work the group has collaborated with Mano Gallo from Belgium and the popular Dutch house producer Gregor Salto. The group is made of six talented members; Mathias Muzaza who is the lead vocalist; Trustworth Samende, lead guitarist; Ndaba Costa Moyo, drums; Miti Mugande, percussion; MacDonald Moyo, keyboard and Abundance Mutori who plays the bass guitar. It will be Mokoomba’s maiden appearance at Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo.

STITSHA!

THE COMEBACK Sihlangu Dlodlo, one of Bulawayo’s prominent playwrights and producers, has resuscitated Cont Mhlanga and Amakhosi Theatre’s best known and ground breaking play STITSHA. According to Dlodlo, who is actually producing the play for the second time, STITSHA is a timeless plays to discuss the land issue and gender equity way back in the late 80s. Both issues are still pertinent even today. The play is credited with introducing Amakhosi Theatre to the international stage. Stitsha is

The new play has a new cast of talented and vibrant artists including the versatile and NAMA award winning actor Zenzo Nyathi, the well- travelled and vocally gifted Nomathamsanqa Mkwananzi and seasoned artists like Memory Kumbota and Thulani Mbambo.

‘artistically uses music, dance and drama to weave’ Stitsha has been produced for both the stage and television with Joyce Mpofu playing the lead in the original stage version while the late Beater Mangethe played Thuli in the television version. In the new version Nomathamsanqa Mkwananzi is playing Thuli, the lead character. Describing the play, Dlodlo,the Director of Qhube Productions, said Stitsha was a dance drama about a dance drama - a timeless classic that brings the issue of women’s equity to the fore without the drag of stereotype. The play artistically uses music, dance and drama to weave world. The land issue, quite topical in Zimbabwe and lately in South Africa is discussed in this no-holds barred production.

THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, SPORTS, ARTS AND CULTURE, THROUGH ITS ARTS AND CULTURE DEPARTMENT, has embarked on a massive orientation program for schools’Arts and Culture Heads of Departments within Bulawayo Metropolitan Province. The Department held district by district workshops whose main thrust was to unpack the Ministry expectations when it comes to Arts and Cultural activities within schools. What seems to be coming out is that the Department is keen to formalize art and cultural activities within schools by making sure that arts and culture is taken with the seriousness it deserves. Israel Ndlovu, E.O Arts and Culture, observed that the current trend within schools is that Arts and Cultural activities are taken as pass time events or place holder activities and the department was working on bringing that to an end.

Schools are already implementing the Ministry’s circular 28 of 2010 recommendations which demand that a committee be set in each school that will oversee the running and implementation of Arts and Culture teaching.

One interesting element within the Ministry’s quest is its hunger for statistics. Each school is required to send a statistical report after each cultural activity. The statistics have to cover the number of all players as these will be usedin shaping the future of the sector. The Ministry is not embarking on this dream journey alone but has taken on board other stakeholders. Artists and Institutions with vast expertise were invited to come and share with educators their experiences. Intwasa Arts Festival Director Raisedon Baya shared his understanding of Arts and Culture and its importance in shaping the ethos of a nation.He made it clear that culture is the strongest tool an individual or a group of people can use to their advantage. He went on to extrapolate and expounded on the importance of Arts festivals in schools.

He laughed vary from one ethnic group to the other. He recommended that schools should instead build Cultural Centers as Villages will demand a lot of resources. He promised to give a more detailed paper during Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo. Silenkosi Moyo also shared vital information on Art Galleries and the importance of Visual Arts exhibitions in schools as a form of come up with a programme for the whole year.

FESTIVAL WORKSHOPS & VENUES ARTS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP (20 & 21SEPTEMBER) This is the second edition of the workshop which started last year (2011). The two day workshop will look at models of arts management and how management can improve the running and organisation of the arts sector in Zimbabwe. The workshop will be conducted by Mr Nicholas Moyo, the Deputy Director of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and a fellow at the American Kennedy Centre of the Arts. Supported by the U.S Embassy the workshop will take place at the American Corner (Bulawayo Public Library).

OPEN DIALOGUE: CULTURAL CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP (19SEPTEMBER) A one day workshop on the business of arts. The U.K based facilitator will focus on the potential of the arts as a business, the business opportunities that exist in Zimbabwe, Africa, Europe and globally. The workshop is supported by the British Registration is free. (Only 50 participants will be registered for this workshop.)

ARTS AND CULTURE WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS (20SEPTEMBER) In conjunction with Amagugu Cultural Village Trust the festival will host a one day workshop for Arts and Culture teachers. The workshop seeks to capacitate teachers in ways of using cultural villages as resource tools for teaching purposes and using an interdisciplinary approach. This will be facilitated by renowned historian and cultural expertMrPathisa Nyathi. Registration is $10
