This week's recommendation ALBUM TITLE: Unfollow the Rules ARTIST: Rufus Wainwright RELEASED: July 2020 GENRE: Operatic Baroque Pop BIO: Rufus Wainwright’s self-titled debut album was released in May 1998. An accomplished and creative musician, Rufus possesses a unique and soothing tenor voice. This is his ninth studio album and his fi rst new pop album since 2012. Rufus became interested in opera as a teenager and has writt en two classical operas. That infl uence permeates this album, which is set out like an opera in three acts. WHAT TO EXPECT: Producer Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Paul McCartney, Randy Newman) has brought the best out of Rufus, aided by a group of seasoned and extremely talented session musicians. Unfollow The Rules highlights Wainwright’s glorious, dramatic and passionate vocals and is full of his creative journeys into jazz, opera, pop and folk. WHAT WE LIKE: There’s a bit of Randy Newman in the opening track and fi rst single Trouble in Paradise, and plenty of that distinctive, Rufus tenor. The Joni Mitchell inspired Damsel in Distress highlights acoustic guitars and symbolic lyrics. Peaceful Aft ernoon is a lush and dramatic piece featuring strings and percussion. Aft er some light romance, most of side 2 of the album sees Rufus move through some of the darker moods of his life - the melancholy darkness and orchestrated haze of Early Morning Madness, the confl ict and drama of Hatred, and fi nally Alone Time, refl ecting the isolation of COVID and blending Rufus on vocals and piano. STANDOUT TRACKS: Damsel In Distress, Romantical Man, Only The People That Love. PERFECT FOR: This needs a long session – a romantic candlelit dinner, a cool cocktail evening, a morning hangover and a mellow period of refl ection.
