Q &A A QUICK CHAT WITH...
BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS. HAVE YOU EVER WRITTEN ABOUT ANY TURKEYS? No turkey writing here. I guess some local band could write a song about them, or a kid write a kid’s book about them. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC TO CHILL OUT TO? The slower tracks from Daft Punk. Maybe some classical music when driving in the mountains or in nature. Sometimes when I write I play the Inception song, Time by Hans Zimmer, in the background. Billy Curry AUTHOR / MARKETER / SURFER TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON. I grew up near Bairnsdale - a small Victorian town, and then finished my education In Melbourne – where I stayed for a couple of decades. I wanted to try living near the ocean. I chose Suffolk for a three-month trial that I am now two years into. YOU’VE REPRESENTED AUSTRALIA IN SPRINT KAYAKING AND COMPETITIVE SURF LIFESAVING, AND NOW YOU’RE A WRITER - WHAT COMES MOST NATURALLY? None of them. Fortunately, or unfortunately, you have to work hard in both writing and sport. The only thing that comes instant is coffee. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MAIN INSPIRATION FOR WRITING? The joy that comes from it. I had a month off before I started working a contract years ago, and started to write about a holiday I took. That became the basis of my first book, and I found that I really enjoyed that experience. I have stuck with it. YOUR THIRD NOVEL – “HER NAME WAS VIOLET”- HAS JUST HIT THE STREETS. WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Evan awakes from a coma in a hospital. His life feels over. Then he meets a physiotherapist named Violet who helps him on the road to recovery. Other people have told me it’s about life, love, relationships, a comeback and a will to live. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Obviously, like everyone else, the potholes! Also, some Byron council “rules” that hold back some startup businesses - I’ve experienced that. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – “I LOVE …. a good movie, or a great surf” IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS? Someone from Star Wars, maybe Luke. If not, Gordon Ramsey.
