I
chorus
Come, O come Emmanuel,
For Israel longs for thee.
In exile did we weep for thee, In affliction have we prayed for thee. Come David’s son, O King of kings, O come, Emmanuel.
Withhold not thy tender mercies
Be not far from us.
Send thy blessings upon this people, We place our hopes on thee.
Come, O come Emmanuel, Hide not thyself forever.
Bring forth thy righteousness as light, Thy judgment as the noonday.
Prepare our hearts, hear thou our cry, O come Emmanuel
Gabriel
Behold, the day cometh!
I have heard thee, and I shall comfort Zion.
Thou art my servant O Israel, in whom I shall be glorified.
chorus
Behold, the day cometh!
My salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.
Thou art my servant O Israel, in whom I shall be glorified
Lift up thine eyes round about, For the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.
For ye shall have a song and gladness of heart.
I have heard thee. The day cometh.
Gabriel
Hail, thou highly favored, the Lord is with you.
Fear not, Mary, for you have found grace with God.
You will conceive and bear a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High.
The Lord will give Him the throne of David His father.
He will rule the house of Jacob forever, And there will be no end to His kingdom.
Mary
My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. For He that is mighty hath done to me great things: And holy is His name. And His mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation
chorus
He has acted in power with His arm, And He scattered the proud by the thoughts of their hearts.
He brought down the mighty from their thrones, And lifted up the lowly; He filled the hungry with good, And the rich He hath sent away empty. He helped His servant Israel to remember mercy,
As He said to our fathers, and to Abraham
And His descendants forever [for eternity]
Gabriel
The Holy Spirit will come upon you And the power of the Most High shall overshadow you.
The child that will be born will be holy, And He will be called the Son of God. Elizabeth, she who was called barren, has also conceived a son, And is in her sixth month.
With God, nothing is impossible.
Mary
Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Be it unto me according to thy word.
chorus
Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
II
Elizabeth
Why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me? When the sound of your greeting was in my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.
chorus
Blessed is she who believes that what was spoken to her by the Lord will be fulfilled.
Elizabeth
Great is the Lord God, For He has done this to me and looked upon me with favor, Though I am advanced in years He has taken away my disgrace as with Sarah and Hannah.
He has worked this great miracle upon me. I shall also bear a son and his name shall be John.
chorus
He shall be great before the Lord And he shall be called a prophet of the Most High.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb. He shall turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will go before the Lord to prepare His way, To give knowledge of salvation to His people.
Mary
How shall I bear this awful joy?
To whom do I speak of an angel?
To whom do I speak of the greatness of God? For I am young, and innocent of the world. How shall I know what I am to do? I am willing, but stand amazed, Surely the Lord God has chosen me, But who shall counsel me? Who shall teach me?
Elizabeth
We bear evidence of God’s mighty power He has chosen us for this work, before the world was.
Surely He shall guide our hands and hearts and give us wisdom.
Be faithful, though your heart be troubled. Be constant though your path be dim. Be loving though others doubt you, And angels shall attend you And speak peace unto your heart.
Mary
What have I to offer to this divine child. What mortal gifts have I to give?
Elizabeth/chorus
Surely a mother’s love needs grace this child, and shall teach Him in His mortal trials. Faithfulness shall attend His steps, For He shall see this in your path. Strength in trials shall be given you, And He shall witness it.
Joy in beauty, love in family Laughter and delight in friendship. Courage in the face of trial, Knowledge of the Father’s love. Tenderness and sweet compassion, How to listen, how to serve. All these, with truth entwined, shall serve Him, and comfort Him. Divine instruction, understanding, A mother’s love and God’s commission— All these things you will offer Him.
LIBRETTO
Mary/Elizabeth duet
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him And He shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes; and depart from evil. So shalt thou find favor and good understanding In the sight of God and man. Go now, And may the peace of God rest upon you, And the Holy Spirit guide you. May you delight in your faithful husband And find joy in the babe you bear.
III
Gabriel
And when her time was accomplished, Elizabeth bore a son, And he was called John.
chorus
Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, because He looked on and brought redemption to His people, and did raise a horn of salvation to us, in the house of David His servant, as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets. He has shown mercy and remembered His holy covenant.
Gabriel/chorus
And in Bethlehem, the days were accomplished that Mary should bring forth her son, And they called him Jesus. Thus, in a stable, was the Savior born. As prophets had testified, and angels witnessed in the heavens.
Gabriel Fear not!
Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified!
chorus/Mary/Elizabeth Fear not!
Sing, O heavens, and be joyful And break forth into singing, O mountains; For the Lord hath comforted His people And will have mercy upon the afflicted.
Fear not!
Lift up your eyes unto the heavens and look upon the earth beneath, for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old, But my salvation shall be forever.
Awake, awake and put on strength, Come singing unto Zion For everlasting joy shall be upon your head, sorrow and mourning shall flee away. Alleluia and Amen
