ThethemeforthisrecitalemergedfrommydiscoveryofSchoenberg’sDasBuch derHängendenGärten.TheatonalstyleandabstracttextputthestoryofEdenin aunique,ethereallight.Fromthere,IdecidedtoincludeselectionsfromHaydn’s epicoratorioTheCreation,whichshowsGod’scraftsmanshipbyanimatingeach animalthroughwildtexturesintheorchestra ThecantatacycleMembraJesu NostriexpressesthecomposerBuxtehude’sreligiousdevotionfromthe17th century,thepoetArnulfofLeuven’sdevotionfromthe13thcentury,andthe devotionthatAdamandEvemusthavefelt.Itaddressesdi erentpartsofChrist’s cruci edbody thisprogramincludesselectionsfromtheAdcorandAdpectus cantatas,or“totheheart”and“tothechest.”Amorerecentcomposer,Jake Heggie,hasmultipleenigmaticcollectionsstemmingfromthetheBookof Genesis,soI’veincludedonesongfromhisEve-song,inwhichEvegrappleswith theDevilinsnakeform,andonefromOfGodsandCats,whichdepictsaslightly lessseriousevent.Fauré’ssongcycle,Lachansond'Ève,concludeswithasongin thisprogram,inwhichEveacceptsandinvitesthevastconsequencesofeatingthe fruit.ThecharacterofDonQuixoteinRavel’sDonQuichottemirrorstheinnocent andloyalAdam,whileAdam’sinnercon ictattheendofhistimeinEdenis re ectedinthebaroqueItalianchurcharia,“Pietà,Signore.”Thisrecital’slastset containssongsthatportraythecomplicatedbeautyofthenewworldinheritedby EveandAdam.BookendingthisprogramaretwoRussianOrthodoxchoirworks: Sviridov’sPushkin’sGarlandandRachmanino ’sVespers,whicharesomeofthe closestmusicalcompositionstoGod’sgloryIhaveeverheard.
