Kyle Dendy Becoming An Entrepreneur

Can you tell us a little bit about your upbringing and how it helped you grow in your walk with Christ? Kyle: I was born into a Christian family but was hit with tragedy at an early age when I lost my dad to suicide. Events like that destroy people or propel people depending on who and what they have around them, and because of my family and friends, it did the latter. Being grounded in God was at times all I had and it helped me and pushed me to grow in Christ. You are an individual who is centered on purpose. Your book “The Purpose Playbook” is an amazing guide to help people

achieve purpose in life. Can you talk about a moment or a time when that desire to help people with their purpose started? Kyle: I’ve always been drawn to the idea that we all have more inside of us, so how can we tap into it, but I would say going to college was what did it for me. I heard to many people say, “I don’t know my purpose,” and I knew I had wisdom that could help them that I had to share. Before you had the move to become an entrepreneur, you mentioned that you worked at a retail store, can you talk about the transition from that? Also, can you talk about the steps that you were taking to

eventually do what you are doing now? Kyle: Yes, I worked at Foot Locker selling shoes (and I wasn’t even that good at it haha). But I think a lot of people think about ‘jumping’ from where they are (job) to where they want to be (entrepreneurship) when they should be thinking about how they can ‘bridge’ the two. For example, I was speaking locally and writing books while still working retail. I would work on my talks while on the sales floor, ask for a Sunday off so I could go preach, then come back to work on Monday. I’ve always said, “Work it ‘til it works.” I’m in a position now where I make much more in my businesses in one day sometimes than I made

After having done every other part of the business so intentionally and in my own hands for so many months, I found myself on my knees saying “God, there’s literally nothing in my power to do to control if we do all What are some challenges the sales I envisioned or sell you’ve faced as an entreZERO.” It stretched me a lot preneur this year and has because it was happening in your faith been tested? And that’s what people need to do. Audit your 24 hours, cut out the time wasted, work a job you may not like, put the money into your business instead of Netflix, hustle from 7pm12am, and when your business income lets you comfortably leave your regular work, do so. That’s my formula.

irst of all, let me start out with this. It is really cool to see a New Christian Magazine Company reaching out to artists like me. I come from a small town, and not a lot of people know who I am, yet we both have a passion for the King and a desire for people to see Jesus how we see Him, and so we unite, and create this beautiful thing called community. I am going to share with you who I am, how music has shaped me, and where I feel God calling me. My name is Dallas. I am a lover of music, Jesus, and all things coffee. I haven’t been playing instruments for very long, only having started attempting to learn piano 3 years ago. I fell in love with the passion that was always associated with music, and the passion I felt when playing. I would learn chords and practice worship songs so I could play them at my families house church, so it was then everything began to snowball. I bought a ukulele in 2016, and got my first guitar in 2017, and purchased a mando later that summer. Guitar became my favorite, I always felt as though the options were endless. I wrote my first song that summer, of 2017, while I was at YoungLife camp in Colorado. The camp musician that week listen to it, and she even asked to take a video, and told me to keep at it. So I did. I don’t think she realized how much of an impact she had on what I am doing now. My family and I went through a really difficult time fall of 2017, of which I won’t go into detail, but the Lord remained faithful. I struggled understanding why He was taking us through this valley, but He made something beautiful out of something I thought was a mess. I had written of lot of music during this time, and a lot of the music I wish to share is from that season. I recently released my first single “Deep Calls to Deep” this past month, and the message of this song continually hits very close to home every time. I ask you listen to the lyrics and interpret them for yourself, because I find that

much more personal. God has brought me to the place I am now, and I am beyond thankful. I never would have imagined I would write music, learn instruments and then have the opportunity to share it with the world. He knows much more than I do and I am continuing to rest on that. I hope to release more music this fall or winter. I don’t have anything set in stone, but I definitely see an EP in the near future. I will leaving the United States for 9 months, so while I am gone I am praying that God gives me direction for what is next, and I can’t wait to share that with you. You can find my newly released song “Deep Calls to Deep” on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, iTunes, YoutubeMusic and on many more outlets! You can follow me on instagram to stay up to date with what is going on with me, @dallasnicolemusic . I hope this song moves you, and I thank you greatly for sticking around to get to know me!

Artist Spotlight

We have the pleasure of interviewing Land of Color. They recently dropped an amazing EP that is self-titled. They were on tour with Tenth Avenue North, but most importantly they are men who are living for God on a daily basis.

I mean, if you know anything about the, the history of South Africa, you know, it’s got quite a tumultuous history with apartheid and everything, but the Lord really quite an amazing work in kind of restoring that country. I really just give the glory to God and to the church who was praying for a long time for change, so it was kind of interesting and fun living through that whole period. Also it’s quite a rough place to live. I mean there’s a lot of crazy things that happened there that doesn’t happen in America, so that definitely shaped my upbringing. I got saved when I was young. I was like 10 years old and I really fell in love with the church and I really experienced the church in a good way just to kind of being a refhow are you all today? uge in the family for me. That kind of shaped my desire to Hey, we’re glad to be here want to just exalt the church with you and just be part of it. Thomas and I always talk about like Can you all describe, because I know that Gary near we have kind of a deal misyou grew up in South Africa sion. We feel called to the church because we both love and Thomas is, you grew up in Colorado. Can you all the church, but we also feel a call to those who, who haven’t describe like how your upbringing is, where I’m grow- experienced God and who on the fringes. Those are the two ing up there and how that developed your faith as well things we really want to foas your musical sound that cus on in our ministry. Growing up there also musically you all came up with? affected me. I mean there’s obviously a lot of different Gary: I was born and raised sounds coming out of Africa in South Africa, which is a very interesting place to live. I and I would go to these youth camps where we’d have peomean, it’s very beautiful. The people are great. The church ple from all different parts of Africa sharing their music and is actually a really strong in worshiping in different ways. South Africa. God’s really And I feel like the music and done some amazing things.

those rhythms kind of got into my bones at a young age and then that kind of comes out in our music too, you know, Thomas: I grew up just north of Denver in a town called Fort Collins, Loveland, Fort Collins area. I grew up in the church. My Dad was a pastor and still is a pastor and have been a music guy and songwriter my whole life. He never really pushed us to pursue that direction as well. You know, there’s a lot of difficulties financially that can come with being a musician and having that be your career., but there’s just so much joy that that comes from that too, so I saw that in him and grew up playing drums for him in church and spent my whole life growing up in the church. Then right after high school, I got a job down in Denver at another church doing design work, leading worship, and kind of all things creative that was needed at this church. I was really forced to kind of start claiming what I had been taught my whole life and kind of challenged to own it for myself in a new way for the first time. I would say even even a couple of years before that in high school, there’s just challenging times to really kind of own this faith that I’ve been taught my whole life and shown, but I’ve, I just kind of latched onto my parent’s faith instead of claiming it for myself or really understanding what it meant to have a trust in the Lord. I had gone through just some rough

patches in my life and just some struggles with searching for identity, love, and affection and all those things. Through that, I met my wife down in Denver at that church that I was working at. Then the Lord just shown himself so faithful and really he shown himself real to me in, in a new way, you know, that’s outside of my family’s faith and my parent’s faith as a path as pastors. I’m really grateful for that. I think our music too. It’s got a sense of liberation to it. I think for both of us has just this sense of freedom in our walks with the Lord and our understanding of God and who he has shown us that he is.

wife were kind of in transition. I’m just kind of seeking the Lord for next steps. And we said, hey, why don’t you guys come check out Nashville Franklin? And a few months after that him and his wife did Gary: It was about three come down and they came to years ago. I was booked to lead worship at a conference check it out and they actually stayed with my wife and I and in Montana and they live in with our kids. They stayed Franklin, Tennessee at that with us for a weekend. I only time. Thomas also came up to that same conference. He knew him from the conferwas playing with his dad who ence that we really didn’t was a worship leader too. He know each other real well, was also booked to be at this but we spent a week together and we just really connected retreat, this conference and also to speak, so Thomas just on a kind of community, famcame up to hang with his dad ily, spiritual level. We just ate a lot of meals together, had and play music with his dad and that’s where we met. And a lot of great conversations about the Lord and we just Thomas connected with myreally connected well and that self and some other friends was actually when Thomas of our crew and him and his Now, we know that bot of you met in the mountains of 2015, but we want to know how did all that transpire that led you all to where you are today?

and I started writing songs together. We just grabbed our guitars and we wrote a few songs that week together. We never thought about starting a band. I mean we were just friends and then Thomas and his wife did eventually move down to Franklin and started living lab here and we just continued to write songs. And the band actually started out about songwriting relationship because we had all these songs and they were kind of a different sounding music and we just asked ourselves, wonder what the Lord wants to do with the songs. And we kinda just gave it to him. We decided to record an album of the songs and we recorded them in our basements. Then that’s when it started. People kind of heard the music and just liked it and started asking us to come play and then kind of just snowballed from there. Two years later it’s kind of our full time thing.

we were like, hey, let’s just go with this. It’s different. Like it was different to what both of us that thought and I just came out kind of like the mix of colors that came out, like a new color. And then we just sat on it and I don’t know, it just became this journey. Many lanes was the one, kind of the tipping point for 10th Avenue North and the label to sign us. Now, we wanted to transition to a touring because I know you all are on tour with 10th Avenue North, so how did you all meet them and eventually like develop that relationship?

Thomas: Mike Donehey is the lead singer for the band and I was in a Bible study group with him. That’s where I first met him. And then later on, Thomas moved here from Franklin and he got introduced to Michael. We were just friends with him. When it came to the recent We would hang out every EP, that’s self-titled which now and then have a barbewe can say from start to fin- cue or something. Eventuish is remarkable. With really, when we recorded our gards to your single “Many independent music, we gave Lands” How did that song him a copy of the album and come about? he took it onto the bus with him on Tenth Avenue North. Gary: We wanted to make The guys really kind of fell in that the first single cause it’s love with the music and they a really good example of kind came back and say to us, hey of how the process works. I guys, we’ve started a, a new think Thomas first came up record label with Provident with a little intro and then I music and we want you guys think I went away with it and to be the first band that we kind of came back with an signed to our label. So that’s idea that was like totally in a what happened. We became different direction. And then the first band signed to their

imprint record level. It was a way unexpected. I mean, we weren’t pushing on music anyway. We weren’t shopping it around. I mean this is basically just giving our music to a friend, and we just loved the way it happened because it was organic. It really came out of relationship and these guys took a chance on us and they said, Hey, we love your music and we want to give you guys a platform to share it with our fan base. They’ve just really shown such love. They give us a great record deal and part of it is then taking us on the road and like I said, introducing us to their fan base. so we did a tour with them recently. In those moments of now being on the road, how has that experience been for both of you? Thomas: I’m married, andme and my wife have been married for seven years, and we don’t have any kids yet, but Gary’s married and he has four kids and a lot bigger ship to maneuver, you know, being away and in different things like that. Speaking into just being out, we were referencing earlier that it’s so easy to like jump ahead in our minds and try to, especially as an opening band, you know, you get out there and we’re feeling really honored and privileged to, to be doing what we’re doing right now, but then there’s something innate feeling in our flesh that wants something more, you

know, and when we’re like, Gosh, you know, three years ago I wouldn’t have, I would have just been so happy doing exactly what I’m doing right now. I’m too, you know, and being content with that and there’s something in all of us that just need something more, you know, and it’s this fleshly desire that we can’t keep satisfied. However, the Lord constantly reminding us while we’re out. It’s just like, dude, just look at the, look at what’s around you. Look at what I’ve given you. Be okay with what I’ve given you right now. There’s a song on the album about that called “The World’s Got Nothing On You”, and it just talks about how we

look over our shoulder and see what the next person’s got an and, and that’s kind of a disease that never goes away until you find 10 friends in the Lord enough. So that, like Thomas said, that’s something we, we trying to see how blessed we are and would not look at someone else and think, oh, we should, we could have that, but it’s just count our blessings where we are and basically just kind of just live in the now, you know. Um, and just be grateful. Gary: it’s really been, it’s been harder now, you know, being exposed to bigger audiences and being on the road

with these bands, you know, that, I think the challenge is even harder. Um, the more that we’ve got into this new season of life, you know, touring and being signed and different things. It’s just kind of, it almost opens up a new door for the enemy to really put anxiety in your heart and, and different things like that. So it’s, it’s kind of a new level of trusting the Lord and that, that, that we’re learning, you know, same to just our marriage. Gary: We haven’t been on the road a crazy amount since we signed the record deal. It’s been quite a good pace. We both very aware of

that, that our families come are important. first. We definitely make sure that we kind of buffer our touring so we have time off beforehand and the time off afterwards. Fortunately touring with a band like Tenth avenue north, those guys are all family guys. So they make sure that they’re not away crazy amounts of time so that the touring is a really good pace. And I think what has always keep that in check. I mean next year there’s quite a lot of stuff on the calendar so we were going to just keep checking in and making sure that our families are taken care of. We make sure we keep that in balance and not put our careers ahead of our families is, I think part of our ministry is, is making sure that our families are on the right track and then we, we can have a strong base to minister from, you know, instead of doing scratch stuff on the road and thigns are shambles at home, so we’re constantly working on marriage and parenting and those things that

My wife and I do believe that we were called, we knew he loved us and we’ll do the call too. So looking back, being now here in Greenville and being established here, looking back on her life Houston, we constantly can’t believe that happened and we got a chance to make it to this point. My wife and I met in Houston, we started dating and Houston, we’ve got married in Houston. My whole entire life, everything up to about six months ago, or I guess almost almost 12 months now because we Thank you for joining me in moved out here in February of last year is all big stuff and his interview today. I want Houston. So that’s home for to kind of backtrack into you first being in Houston, me. Texas. Can you start off by telling us, um, how was life Can you talk about that like process that led you and in Houston and how did your wife to move into from it play a part in your faith Houston to South growing up? Carolina? Byron: Yeah, so born and raised in Houston on the east side near Channelview ISD area. My home church was in Humble, Texas, so it’s like 20 minutes away. If God didn’t call us to Greenville, South Carolina, I would still be there. I love Houston, but I think for me growing up, there was a whole lot of amazing memories and then obviously just growing up there was some difficult

Byron: Rough? It was rough just because you know, we were all working at a church and we had just met a year to the date and, and I knew that the students just working at the other church where we were at in Houston. So we were, we were worked best to John and I was his personal assistant for a little over a year. And then we got the opportunity to work at anoth-

er church. I with one of our really good friends. And so we were there a year to the date, and on, on that date of the year, um, passion, John called us and asked us would we be interested in moving to South Carolina to Greenville? So that was just a wild thing, how that all happen. Is there any advice that I would say that you would have for the people who feel led or maybe God is telling them to take a leap of faith and maybe move to state or like go somewhere where they’re not familiar with? Um, did you have any advice for them and what they can do? Um, if they’re feeling led to relocate? Byron: I think that for Mariah and I, we were so big on like the peace of God. And a lot of times some people confuse the peace of God with their own personal feeling. And so for us it wasn’t like, oh, this feels good, we should go. We prayed about it, we fasted about it and at the end of the day we felt peace from God to go. Then I think that for us, God will always kind of put a stamp of approval on his peace. Some people glamorize being in the forefront but some don’t understand the test and trials that come with being called and chosen. We try our hardest to not worry about certain things, but at the end of the day, if there’s something that we should be worried about, like, oh my goodness, I’m worried about this person, worry about

them, pray about them, be there for him, but then that’s it. You got to let it go and give it to God and cast your cares on him.

And if you guys are engaged or if you’re about to get engaged, you need to have the conversation of what marriage will look like. I think that was so beneficial for Mariah and Now let’s transition to anme because. we didn’t wait to other topic, what advice start talking about marriage. would give to young males We started talking about who desire but feel like they marriage, like our day two of don’t have all it takes to get dating. Now you don’t have to married? do it day two of dating, but we had the conversation. Byron: I think that for a lot of guys, like the idea of marriage isn’t always a pretty one. You know, I think that for most men they can say that I just much rather date around for the rest of my life or date one girl for the rest of their life. And then if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, then we can just go, you know? And so marriage is a holy thing. It’s a holy covenant between you, your wife, and God. It’s a promise that you guys are making. Also, I think you guys need to have open conversations about any insecurity that you might have about the marriage and then work them out. I think that one of the issues that sometimes couple have is that day they start to be open with each other and get communication. Then the other couple will go and use that against them in a way of which is like, Yo, like I don’t even want to be over with you anymore. Like I just told you one of my biggest insecurities, you know, and now I’m looking out for help and really as your wife or as your husband that they should be.
