7 Weird Facts About Acne Acne is the most common skin disease all across the country – at least once in our life, we have experienced a pimple or breakout. You are not alone. The skin condition is often portrayed as embarrassing but many factors to acne contain everyday instances we cannot control (stress, periods, hormones, and genetics). Want to learn more about these pesky, unwanted breakouts? Here are 7 surprising facts you may not know about acne: 1) Moisturizer is an important essential when you have acne. We tend to believe that more oil will only make your acne worse. But in reality, it’s a definite must to use when you have acne. Why? Acne products contain ingredients that can dry-out the skin. Similar to its reaction to sun exposure, your skin will react to the lack of moisture and produce excess oil, which leads to more breakouts. So do yourself a favor and pick up an oilfree moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and healthy! 2) Drinking Water Doesn’t Cure Acne. Water is not the magic potion that will clear all our breakout woes. However, water is definitely a great source in promoting the flow of nutrients and vitamins to your skin and ridding your body of toxins and waste. Make sure you are drinking at least 10 to 16 glasses of water a day! 3) There are many types of pimples including: ●

Blackheads and whiteheads – which are slightly raised bumps that are caused by oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria buildup that blocks your pores.

Papules and pustules – which are larger bumps that are caused when blocked pores become irritated.

Nodules and cysts – which are deeper pimples that should be treated by a specialist. They are usually very large, painful, and solid.

4. Chocolate does not cause breakouts. Neither does pizza or fries. Actually, there’s little evidence that specific foods actually do cause acne. Although, you should be staying hydrated and eating a healthy diet in order to promote healthy, glowy skin. 5. Acne can happen at any age. It’s not only during your teen years – sorry to break it to you. According to studies, while most breakouts occur during your teenage years, they can still strike in your 30s, 40s, and even 50s. 6. Exercising could make back acne worse. The sweat rubbing and building up against your skin might be the culprit of back acne. In order to prevent this, make sure you take a shower immediately after working out, and if not, using a

cleansing towel, wipe down your body in the area(s) you sweat. This will prevent any future breakouts from occurring. 7. Being too clean can cause acne. Scrubbing your skin can cause more pimples to appear. Zits may not respond well to excessive cleaning and can aggravate the skin leading it to cause even more pimples. 8. Sun exposure can make your acne worse. You’ve probably heard that myth that a little time in the sun will help you zap those zits. Well, you heard wrong. Sun exposure can make acne worse due to the UV rays weaken the skin’s barrier and cause it to lose moisture. To counteract this moisture loss, your skin then produces excess oil, which leads to clogging and breakouts. Moral of the story… ALWAYS wear that sunscreen!
