Crystal Nguyen ARRID Packaging Design Fall 2011, Typography Digital Illustration and Print 3 in. Ă— 3 in. Ă— 1.6 in.

The purpose of this project was to redesign a poorly done packaging design for a deodorant cream while incorporating an art movement to heighten interest. The Art Deco movement was chosen because it represented glamour, modernity, and functionality, which are desirable aspects of this consumer product. 2

Crystal Nguyen The Life & Works of Alphonse Mucha Spring 2011, Visual Methods Digital Illustration and Print 11 in. × 17 in.

This was a collaboration between chosen artist, Alphonse Mucha and myself. The resulting poster advertising his gallery opening ties together my design with his illustration style, Art Nouveau. Making use of his tendency to create “halos” around his subjects, I placed several of his original works in the design for a preview to the art show. 4

Crystal Nguyen Character Relations Chart Spring 2012, Independent Project Digital Illustraion and Print 11 in. Ă— 17 in.

The relationships within a group of friends tend to get confusing and complex and it is even more difficult to explain in words. By mapping out the relationships and setting them up in layers, it provides a convenient way to view and organize the information about each person. It is the solution to a quick introduction. 5

Crystal Nguyen The College Life Series Fall 2010-Onwards, Independent Project Digital Illustration

Some people prefer to keep diaries and others choose blogs. I document my memorable college experiences through comic strips. This art form is most useful for capturing the progression of time in only a few images. Before starting, I must go through a process of storyboarding, planning, as well as designing characters to accurately represent their real-life counterparts. 7

Crystal Nguyen Self-Portrait Still Life Spring 2011, Perceptual Drawing Graphite 22 in. Ă— 30 in.

The assignment was to choose several objects that represent ourselves and arrange them to create our self-portrait. My hands are extremely valuable to me in countless ways. They allow me to create artwork, express my aesthetics, among other things that essentially help me get through life, hence the choice of objects. 8

Crystal Nguyen The Black Box Fall 2010, WARP Mixed Media 6 ft. Ă— 5 ft. Ă— 7 ft.

This was an installation piece that brought together several aspects of behavioral psychology. Viewers were expected to enter this flickering room full of dolls while hearing the sound of children laughing. The mind tends to make connections to make sense of things, and therefore; leads them to believe that the dolls are alive and watching. 9

Crystal Nguyen Psycho Movie Poster Fall 2011, Typography Digital Illustration and Print 11 in. Ă— 17 in.

The goal of this typographic movie poster was to capture the essence of the movie Psycho in one image. I decided to paint the shower curtain from the most famous scene in the movie dividing the title in half, which represents the split personality disorder that the antagonist is inflicted with. However, the viewer would not be able to know until he has seen the movie. 10

Crystal Nguyen Florida in Darkness Series Fall 2011, Visual Literacy Digital Photography 4 in. × 6 in.

Florida is often considered the perfect place for a vacation or retirement. Hidden under and benefits shown in advertisements, the “Sunshine State” is an eerie place. Being the perfect location for retirement, there are many elderly that pass away each day. Knowing this, Florida has turned dark. My goal was to capture this morbid atmosphere within everyday places. 11

Crystal Nguyen Vi Spring 2012, Independent Project Digital Illustration

You can tell a lot about a person by what they wear on their shirts. Interests, styles, and even moral beliefs. But there is only so much that one shirt can do. As a solution, I have surveyed a girl named Vi and created a t-shirt design that captures her identity as a whole through the combination of color, imagery, and texture. 12

Crystal Nguyen Girl in the White Dress Fall 2011, Digital Imaging Digital Photography Each photo is 7 in. Ă— 10.5 in.

According to the research in environmental psychology, what is presented in our surroundings effects the way we feel and act. A particular emotion can be evoked by a certain color, setting, or arrangement. To test this, I had the girl in the same composition for each photo, leaving only the environment to change. I collected the results of this experiment during critique. 13

Crystal Nguyen Found Type Project Fall 2011, Typography Found Objects Each letter is 3 in. Ă— 3 in.

This project was done to expand our view on what typography is. It is not just letters on a screen or on paper, but everywhere in our environment. Under the theme of kitchen utensils, I found each letter of the alphabet without the need for manipulation. 14

Crystal Nguyen Abbreviated Text Design Fall 2011, Typography Digital Illustration and Print 11 in. × 17 in.

The idea behind logotypes is effectively getting a certain message across with just a word or a few letters. For this project, I chose an acronym, TMI, or “Too Much Information” and illustrated the meaning using the three letters. Information can be related to papers or documents, so the disorganized office setting with flying papers shows the overload of information. 15
