Devotionals ~ Overcoming Fear ~ Get Inspired! ~ ~Thank You, God, for Fleas ~ ~It is Well~

-By Lora

When I was thirteen, I went through a month of being in fear about something. It was not just a little fear that came and went. No, it was always there and it was sickening to think about. I knew that God had not given me a spirit of fear. In 1 John 4:18 it says: "There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." It was completely stupid, however then in my mind it appeared as big as a mountain. I will say that it was because I wasn't putting my trust in God - therefore I was worrying. So, for over a month I told no one but held it within, tortured by this fear. God was very patient with me through it all; continually giving me verses on trusting in Him. For some reason I could not grasp it. One day when this fear seemed about to overtake me I went outside and sat on our step-out walkway. The sun was shining brightly, I remember. It was a beautiful day but I hardly saw this. My cat named Adorable came up to me and began rubbing against my knee. Happily she purred and began rolling around in our driveway in front of me. Obviously she hadn't a care in the world. As I sat watching her suddenly through this God spoke to me. I felt as if He were telling me "Look at your cat! She doesn't worry about tomorrow, she just enjoys life." I had finally begun to grasp it. A few days later I told my mom about this fear. As moms usually do, she had just the right words for me. Almost as if talking to a child she told me why fear is not from God and showed me verses about living in peace, including Prov. 3:23-26 and Ps. 3:5.

Check out these

verses!

Prov. 3:5-7 ~ Ps. 91:4 Ps. 27:14 ~ Ps. 4:8 Ps. 29:11 ~ Is. 26:3 Is. 54:14 ~ Is. 35:4 Is. 40:27-31 ~ Is. 41:13 Prov. 1:33 ~ Is. 42:5-6 Is. 43:1-5 ~ Is. 44:2-3 Is. 25:8 ~ Rom. 3:4 Joel 3:10 ~ Micah 7:7-8 Lk. 12:7 ~ Mt. 6:34

We talked for a long time. After a long struggle, through God's gentle voice and my mom's wise encouragement, I firmly grasped peace. My fear is gone completely and now I look back and laugh at that fear - I can't even recall how strong it once felt. God is faithful and real, and I can say this without a doubt in my mind. He is true to His Word, and if you seek Him with your whole heart you will find Him. His grace is sufficient for me!

Inspiration (n.) in·spi·ra·tion 1. stimulation to do creative work 2. somebody or something that inspires 3. creativeness 4. good idea 5. divine influence 6. breathing in

Get Inspired! From the first site of something great, right down to finishing that great thing yourself, these definitions of inspiration certainly are good. Based on these six stated meanings of our word, we can come up with a pretty good idea of how great things come about. Let’s take a look at this journey of discovery. Let’s start with the fifth definition- “divine influence.” Good ideas really are just God ideas. God has already determined the whole history of the world- right down to your thoughts! So before anything ever enters your mind, its end is already set in stone!

The sixth definition is “breathing in.” Let’s suppose you go to a craft store. Hanging on the wall is the most beautiful painting ever! You can taste the salty air of the sea, and feel the sand between your toes. The breeze is gentle and the sun is setting just beyond the water. A few months later, you meet a friendly teenage girl. She says she is an amateur artist. This brings us to the second definition- “someone or something that inspires.” When you ask to see her work, the style just takes you back to that painting. When you realize that this young woman is just a year older than yourself, you begin to wonder if you can’t learn to do the same kind of art. The fourth definition is in action- a “good idea.” Eagerly, you rush back to the store. You find a book on watercolor seascapes and buy all the supplies it says to buy. Now you’re ready… Obviously meaning one- “stimulation to do creative work,” has kicked in. If only the third definition would come true- “creativeness.” After a few days of looking through masterpieces, and several crumpled artworks, you finally have the creativity. A few years of practice and your artworks will look perfect. Inspiration doesn’t have to be artistic. In fact, way more than half the time it isn’t related to art at all! So many times, the most crucial step is meeting that person who inspires you! Over the next several issues, I’ll be highlighting the women in my life who have given me…(you guessed it)…inspiration! *Are you into artistic inspiration? Check out our craft section for a few quick portrait tips!

Thank You, God, for Fleas! By Erika In First Thessalonians it says, “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.” Now, yes, we give thanks when something good happens. If we get a good grade on a test, we might think, “Yes! Thank you, God!” If our grandparents give us an awesome birthday present, of course we’ll say thanks. But notice that this verse doesn’t say, “Give thanks in pleasant circumstances.” It says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” I recently read an amazing book, an autobiography of Corrie Ten Boom, a Christian woman who lived during World War II. She was arrested for helping hide Jews and was taken to a horrible concentration camp. She and her sister had to sleep on platforms with six other full-grown women – and the platforms were absolutely infested with fleas. This definitely wasn’t a Marriott suite! Corrie’s sister, Betsie, remembers that verse from First Thessalonians, and immediately begins to thank God for everything – the crowding, the stench, and even the fleas! Corrie is skeptical – how can fleas possibly be for good? But as time goes on, they realize that the reason they are left totally free to do Bible studies is because none of the guards want to come into the barracks – precisely because of the fleas. This is just one amazing example of how God can use bad things for our good. And, believe me, giving thanks for bad stuff is not easy. I try to pray, “God, thank you so much that my little brother didn’t flush the toilet after he left the bathroom,” and it just doesn’t seem to work. I always have to add, “… even though that’s really gross…” as if God needed me to tell him what was good and what was bad! Even though we may not try to be, when we presume to “remind” God of things we’re being arrogant! God knows our hearts and our minds – he doesn’t need us to tell him if we don’t like something. Another reason why we might not be able to easily thank God for unpleasant things is because, well, … they’re unpleasant. We can’t see how it can possibly do any good. But God can! Part of thanking God in all circumstances is trusting him. You can trust him to make some sort of good come from it, even if it’s a tiny piece of good. You need to trust him to know that you don’t really love it when your older brother or sister patronizes you, and you also need to trust that he has a reason for that, too. Even though you might need to grit your teeth to thank God for some things that don’t really seem something to be thankful for, it will pay off. You’ll learn to trust in God more, to be more sincere and optimistic. And it is amazing to watch how the Father works in your life even through that nasty stuff.

It is Well By Meridian

When peace like a river attendeth my soul When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, “It is well. It is well with my soul.” Don’t we all want peace like that? The kind of peace that just seems to stick with you? It sounds nice, but we’re teenagers. Finals are due, friendships blow up, and life is busy. And we’re supposed to have peace? In the Bible we are virtually commanded to be at peace. Peace seems to be something key to the Christian life: It is mentioned more than 300 times!1 It also makes the top nine Christian qualities list! “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:2223, NIV) So how are we, as busy, social teens supposed to achieve this peace? What do we have to do? The answer is so simple, it amounts to one word: rest. Do absolutely nothing to try and gain God’s favor and peace. Just rest in the arms of Jesus. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, NIV) That’s all there is to it. Sometimes, this peace doesn’t seem to be there. You even take the day off to physically rest, in hopes that this will somehow aid your soul. It may help, but often you’ll still feel somewhat flustered. It’s okay: you are not alone. If you can read proficiently and utter a few simple words, you’re well on the road to peace! Read your Bible. You might even look up all the verses containing the word peace. Then, pray. Ask God to fill you with His peace, and to help you to live accordingly. One day, you’ll wake up and find yourself able to say, “It is well with my soul.” 1 http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_times_peace_appear_in_the_bible

~Homemaking ~ Pasta Recipe ~ Presents from Heaven ~ ~Wisdom– the Principle Thing ~ A Contrast

g n i k a m e m Ho By Erika

Homemaking isn’t just for “when you grow up.” You can start homemaking now, when you’re a young woman. The dictionary definition of “homemaking” is “the management of a home.” Well, your parents might not allow you to manage the whole house yet, but there is another definition of homemaking: “The improvement of a home.” You can improve your home in many ways. You can decorate, you can cook, you can do chores. This is the traditional role of a woman - making a home cozy and comfortable to live in. I’m not saying that women can’t grow up to be doctors and lawyers and teachers! But it seems like naturally women are good at the job of homemaking. They see things men don’t. For example, a woman might put all the books on the coffee table into a neat stack, with the largest books on the bottom and the smallest on top. A man might put them into a stack, too, but often he doesn’t put them in size order. Women can see little details like that. Well, then God must have made us that way, right? Any nature that turns up in almost every woman definitely has to be God’s design for us ladies. In fact, the Bible talks about homemaking, too. In Proverbs 31:27, it reads, “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” So how exactly do we “watch over the affairs of our households?” How do we become homemakers? Well, the first step is wanting to be one. And then, of course, we pray! Pray for God’s guidance in what he wants you to do here. Homemaking is important to him, too, or it wouldn’t be mentioned at all in his Word. Now, you have to look. Every home will have different needs. Maybe your mom is an interior decorator, so your house is totally beautiful, but her cooking talents pretty much end at PB&J sandwiches. Why not find a recipe for cookies online or take a cooking course, just to try it? Or maybe your little siblings always leave their toys out on the floor. You could try your hand at cleaning and tidying up. When you’re doing these things, remember Colossians 3:23 – “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for men.” Imagine you’re decorating the living room for God. You would try your best, right? And remember those womanly touches. You don’t have to have artistic genius to do these, although sometimes it helps. Instead of sloppily icing a cake, make flowers and butterflies with icing on it. Instead of throwing the laundry in a heap, fold it and put it neatly down. You’d be amazed what a difference it makes. See the below pages to get started!

When you think of gifts, what comes to mind? Presents in brightly colored paper? Maybe you think of a gift card to your favorite department store? Or maybe the first thing that pops in your head is gifted people? You know, the ones who get straight A’s in math, or who seem to always get the lead in the school play? The gifts God gives us are a little like both of these kinds of gifts. Like talents, these gifts feature a role for everyone: for some, it’s center stage. Others man the spotlight. Like presents, they come in every color of the rainbow. But they aren’t wrapped up in paper. Spiritual gifts are gifts that God gives each and every one of His children, to be used for His purposes. You could literally make a list of a couple dozen different spiritual gifts from God. However, there are seven that are commonly recognized (though sometimes you will find them under different names than they are listed as here). These seven are prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation, giving, organizing, and mercy. Each of these has different characteristics. No one gift is better than any of the others- they are all equal. During the next several issues, we will highlight each of these gifts and show you their ups and downs. But before we do that, we encourage you to read some books/articles on spiritual gifts and find out what yours is! The articles will prove especially helpful to you if you do so.

Wisdom- The Principal Thing By Miss Jordyn Wilson

I originally put this chart together for the girls in my Bible study as we were studying in Titus 2. The columns on the sides are contrasted with the column in the middle, and the side columns can be compared to each other for the purpose of finding similarities. Much more can be drawn from these passages than I have pointed out, so I would encourage each of you to read the chapters in their entirety for richer insight.

Fiction and Poetry ~Morning Glory~ ~A Date with Destiny~

Morning Glory By Maggie

Morning Glory Nights you hide away, At dawn you ne'er cease to say, Good morning, glory!

A Date with Destiny By Kameryn Alexandra Wilson “Pull tight on the reins! Take control, Lillian!” her dad yelled after the galloping horse. Lillian was desperately struggling to hold on. This was at least her tenth time trying to ride and control this new horse she had gotten for her 13th birthday. She was exasperated as she tried to tame it. Just then, a bunny scampered across their path, causing Lilly to fall backwards into the clouds of dirt. Her panicked father ran and gathered her in his arms. “Are you all right?” he asked. Lillian was too stunned to answer. Her father held her quietly until her heart stopped racing. She finally sat up and brushed the dust off of her jeans. “You go inside and I’ll take Destiny to the stables.” Her dad whispered gently. “Yes sir. Thank you.” Lilly walked inside holding her wrist which she had landed on, after falling off of Destiny. “How did it go?” Her mother asked as she stirred the simmering pot of chili. “Not too well... Destiny got spooked and took off at a full gallop around the paddock. Then a bunny dashed right in front of us and she reared up and I fell off.” “Oh I’m sorry Lilly. I’m sure you’ll be able to get through to her.” Mrs. Williams said, hugging Lilly. That night when Lily went to bed she prayed, “Almighty God, if there is any way I can talk to and understand what Destiny needs and why she won’t let anyone train her, please allow that to happen if that is in your will to do so.” In her sleep she dreamed that she could talk to her horse and that it was absolutely wonderful to be able to communicate and know exactly what Destiny needed. They were in a beautiful, lush meadow, and the presence of God blew through the meadow with a brilliant light and a gentle whispering breeze. At that moment, Destiny turned and gazed intently at Lillian. It was the most powerful and real dream Lilly had ever had. The next morning, she went out to feed her unruly but cherished horse. She couldn’t shake the beautiful dream and wanted to remember it always. (Continued on next page.) Painting by Kameryn Alexandra Wilson

As she continued to ponder it all, she smiled at Destiny and said, “Hey girl! Are you hungry?” filling Destiny’s bucket with oats and hay. Then she filled her water up. She then felt very strongly that Destiny was staring at her, and telling her that she wanted to run outside and roll in the soft grass. But Lilly wasn’t surprised. It was as if Destiny had always shared her thoughts with Lilly in this way. Lilly knew that this gift of knowing was from God and God alone. She also knew that if she told anyone about this communication, they would never believe it. The dream had become a reality. Her quiet, timid prayer had been heard in heaven… this was a breathtaking miracle! Lilly now knew why Destiny was so unwilling to be tamed. It was because she was frightened to give anyone her trust, because the last time she did, she was abused and mistreated. Each day, they trained together, and Destiny soon came to realize that Lilly was someone who would never mistreat her. Their bond grew with each passing day, as they shared their thoughts in their most unusual way, and soon they entered a jumping competition. It was with seemingly great ease that they won the coveted blue ribbon. Lilly and Destiny felt like they were truly one. “You were unstoppable Lilly!” Mr. Williams yelled after the competition. “You two were amazing out there!” “Thanks dad,” Lilly smiled breathlessly, as she slid off her horse and snuggled her face in Destiny’s mane. ~ No one knew how in the world they built such strong trust in so little time. One afternoon, Lilly went to get the lead rope and bring Destiny into the stables from the paddock to feed her. As soon as they reached the stable, Destiny collapsed. “Destiny!” Lilly exclaimed. She tried to communicate with her but it seemed gone. She got up and ran to get her older brother, Colten, since her parents weren’t home. “Colten! Destiny collapsed in her stall! I don’t know what to do.” She screamed, panicking. “Calm down, Lilly. It will be all right. I’ll go see what needs to be done. We may need to call the vet to come.” He bolted out of the chair and ran out the door with Lillian right behind him. When they got to the stables, Destiny was groaning. Colten got on his knee to pet her. “I don’t know if she is sick or hurt. But either way I need to go look up the vet in the phone book and call. You stay here.” He said, and left. Then she heard footsteps on the hay, and it wasn’t Colten but it was her mom. “Lilly, what’s wrong? Is Destiny okay?” She asked with a furrowed brow. (Cont. on next page.)

“I don’t know. I can’t understand. She just collapsed when I brought her in to feed her.” Lilly replied blinking back tears. Destiny’s breathing was heavy and slow, while Lilly’s heart was racing. “I called the vet and she said that the quickest time she can be here is at 1:30. Thirty minutes,” Colten announced. “Lillian, the best thing to do is pray.” Her mother whispered, stroking Lilly’s long thick brown curls out of her face. As Lilly held Destiny close, and smelled her sweaty chestnut coat, she realized she hadn’t spent time with God for a while, much less prayed. As she buried her nose in Destiny’s mane, she cried out to God to please come quickly and heal Destiny. “Father, Please forgive me for not turning to you for help. You have given me this amazing gift to know and understand Destiny, but right now I can’t hear or feel what it is she needs. I saw your presence in that meadow in my dream. I felt the breeze of your love for Destiny and me. Please come now, like you did in my dream! I surrender all of this to you, in Jesus name.” “He hears your prayers, my angel.” her mother assured her. She kissed Lilly and stood to go get more water. All of a sudden, Lilly felt a gentle wind swirling around her, and a peace wrapped around her like a cloak. She stopped and quickly starred into Destiny’s eyes. It was as if Destiny smiled with a great knowing that God himself had entered the stable. ~ “Lillian, the vet is here” Colten yelled, as the truck rumbled into the driveway by the stable door. “Hello, I’m Dr. Hudson. Could you please show me to your horse?” she asked as she quickly gathered her bag. Lilly led her into the barn, to her precious Destiny, sprawled out, sweating on the hay. Dr. Hudson opened her bag and checked Destiny’s heartbeat. As she worked, Destiny and Lilly looked deeply in to each other’s eyes. As Dr. Hudson began to administer medicine for Destiny’s stomach, Lilly yelled out, “Wait! Destiny’s telling me something! She ate a poisonous plant! She needs lots of roughage, fresh new hay, and clean water!” Dr. Hudson stopped and looked at Lilly. “You’re right Lilly, if I had injected her with these meds, it would have complicated her healing, and could have killed her. How did you know Lilly? How did you know she ate a poisonous plant?” Lilly smiled. “I prayed, Dr. Hudson. I can’t explain it, but I felt God’s presence as I asked for wisdom, and He answered me immediately as I looked into Destiny’s eyes. He is a personal God, Dr. Hudson, and he created Destiny, and he knows every longing of my heart. I simply knew after I prayed and cried out for help that is was the poisonous plants outside the barn.” (Cont. on next page.)

Dr. Hudson looked at her stunned. She said nothing, but slowly began to put the meds back in her bag. She slowly stood, and said, “I believe you Lilly, I am a new Christian, I have just come to Christ, and I know that God is the God of miracles! I would love to talk to you more about this and maybe learn from you how to pray. Maybe we could start a Bible study and learn more of God’s mystery! He definitely spoke to you at the right moment!” Mr. Williams bolted in the door, “Any luck?” He asked. “Actually, yes! Your daughter just told me what the horse needed. God told her and she knew. So I’m no longer needed here. And don’t pay me. I have done nothing. Your daughter did.” She smiled at Lilly. “You should really look into being a vet, young lady.” she winked. “Thank you Dr. Hudson but I did nothing. God did it. Through Him I knew.” Lilly said good bye and ran back into the barn. ~ Lillian gave Destiny her roughage and left her outside for the night to eat all the green grass she wanted. Her father dug up all of the poisonous plants. A week later nothing had harmed Destiny. In fact, she was better than before she had gotten sick. “Destiny, God let you live. I read that poisonous plants can kill horses, and God used that knowledge. He knew I would need it!” Lilly said, holding Destiny tightly and looking into her deep brown eyes. Lillian then guided Destiny out into their meadow at the farm, and danced around her with her arms to the heavens, yelling joyously her favorite praise song to God. Destiny turned her body as she followed Lilly turning wildly as she shouted her praise. Then she breathlessly fell back into the lush grass as Destiny nuzzled her face. She prayed with great excitement and humility, “Oh Lord, I praise you for this beautiful piece of creation you have given me! Thank you for sparing Destiny’s life when you had full power to take her away. Thank you for allowing me to know her in a supernatural way! Thank you for my beautiful meadow which will always remind me of my beautiful dream.” And as she closed her eyes, a tear slowly fell down her cheek as a warm cloak of sunlight fell around her, and a breeze whistled through the grass.

“For I know that the Lord is great, and our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases, He does in heaven and on earth.” ~ Ps. 135:5-6

Christy By Catherine Marshall Review By Lora

The book Christy is my favorite book and I highly recommend it! It is about a nineteen-year-old girl named Christy Huddleston who leaves her home in Asheville, Tennessee to go teach school in Cutter Gap, Tennessee. When she arrives, she is in shock at their poverty and helplessness. Nearly all the children she teaches walk to school barefoot - through snow drifts several feet deep. Their homes are filthy and so are they. However, the mission is the prime place of help in these mountains. Christy lives there and helps with its work along with David Grantland, the preacher and his sister Ida, Miss Alice Henderson, a woman of noble strength and character, and Ruby Mae Morrison, a girl whose parents have disowned her. Christy soon comes to love these pride-filled people. Here she finds her faith and emotions challenged greatly. There is a mystery involving love - and moonshine liquor. Then typhoid fever breaks out. I strongly encourage you to read this true story that took place beginning in the year 1912. I hope it thrills you as much as it has me!
