the workshop investigated active systems in nature, developing biomimetic ideas and implementing them in an architectural context. drawing inspiration from the vascular system in plants, we developed a proposal for a “breathing wall” which reacts to the micro-climatic needs of its context. sensors were embedded in the surface, sending near-real time signals to a series of arduino microprocessors. the arduinos interpret the information according to a “grasshopper/ firefly” de nition and control an array of servos. the servos actuate a custom valve system, manuplating the surface geometry of the bio-robotic prototype. the design allows for variable control in an active environment.
