union station 2020_high speed rail hub high speed rail transportation will be added to chicago’s existing infrastructure within the next decade, putting 25,000,000 people within 3 hours of the city. chicago’s existing union station struggles to satisfy the increasing demand for rail transportation. union station 2020 considers the existing urban stratification and rigid linearity as provisional structures, proposing a formal logic for fluid urban transportation based on the delamination of surfaces, program and public space. continuous tubes navigate the striations of Chicago the dense urban High Speed Rail Corridor environment, shifting back and forth to occupy multiple conditions through singular form. smooth spaces move users fluidly through the design to link previously disparate elements of the city. the design indexes an Architecture in which form is the manifestation of process; juxtaposing itself with Daniel Burnham’s existing Union Station. a dialogue emerges between two paradigms, in Architecture and in transportation.

extrusion fields_ecija + seagram
[with CARBONDALE + C. Rodriguez]
ecija plaza was designed by CARBONDALE as a field of extrusions to create a public space. the analysis of their design revealed an absence of motivation of the benches. the extrusions were rearranged, heightened, and programmed to create micro environments within the larger plaza. the strategy identified in ecija was then implemented to speculate renovations on existing buildings in need of additional program space. the extrusions integrate into the existing structural bays and require minimal re-arranging of the floor plan. the extrusions improve the building performance and update the building facade.

URBANbuild4_design/build
[with Tulane City Center]
the URBANbuild 4 prototype addresses the issues of privacy, safety, and transparency that are inherent to the everyday life of residents in the tumultuous central city. custom polygal panels present hurricane protection as a point of architectural opportunity rather than a reactionary system of applied protection. the panels slide on overlapping tracks to allow multiple conditions of privacy and permit large windows which create a spacious interior on a tight floorplan. a high level of security is achieved in a neighborhood in which personal safety is often threatened and the primary deterrent to prospective residents.

dutch dialogues I_ urban canal
[with C. VanWingen]
when it rains in new orleans, the streets flood due to the high water table and a failing pumping system. dutch planners and engineers proposed surface level canals as new infrastructure to alleviate the pressure on pumps. the felecity street canal would turn a short diagonal street into a dead end, intersecting with the water. this street acts as a point of further intervention and public reclamation by allowing dirty canal water to be purified and re-introduced as a swim up movie theater. rain water runoff is collected in a biofiltration swale on the south site before it crosses into a copper ionization structure, removing bacteria and supplying the theater pool then overflowing back into the canal.

dutch dialogues II_urban retention
[with C. VanWingen]
a city-wide backlog on the pumping system. restructuring the existing urban fabric allows the neighborhood to act as a retention bayou and relieve pressure on the city’s drainage infrastructure. a new architectural paradigm emerges as the built structures must address the new urban condition and adopt an intimate relationship with the water. the claiborne street edge of the triangle is activated by a public market and an indoor/outdoor

digital fabrication_suspended emanation + scalar de
the dynamic trajectories of object movement over time can be mapped by exposing multiple frames in a single photograph. the suspension of light particles emanating from their source registers the movement of light through time and space. the particles were generated from a grid source and emitted into virtual space while acted upon by a vortex force. the animation was frozen and the suspended particles were translated into voids in the 3-D printed object. the curvature of the object traces the paths of the particles, and an the 3-D print holds the form for a flexible, electroluminescent light source.
efinition
[images from collaboration] [with C. Rodriguez + C. Bickham]
individual components register the dimensional variation across a topological surface through their fixed relationship with points on that surface. a parametric definition organizes the surface into a diagonal grid and creates a scalable component that maintains the fixed relationship to the surface. the assembly of component forms indexes the topology without reproducing its curvature. through determinate connections the components can only be arranged in sequence to produce the original surface.
