To whom it may concern Object: Presentation of Caterina Mucignat
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Miss Caterina Mucignat. Caterina has recently completed her Master’s Degree at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and I have supervised her final dissertation project, together with Professor Martin Boesch from the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio.
Throughout her studies Caterina has demonstrated the ability required to analyze complex situations and design appropriate solutions. She is able to deliver excellent work even when under pressure. Among Caterina’s best qualities are her graphic skills, her enthusiasm in approaching new projects and her sensitivity in understanding contemporary and ancient architecture, as well as excellent teamwork abilities. In the final project She focused on the refurbishment of an ancient building on the Lugano lake and also in defining the character of a new construction near this one. The work was a great experimentation about the idea of creating a building dealing with the scale of the landscape. She succeed in defining a new tall building that in forms and materials appers to be in strong relation to the context.
It was a pleasure to have Caterina as a student. Overall, she is very motivated and bright, and I certainly believe that she has the talent and drive to achieve success in her career in the future. It is for this reasons that I would strongly recommend Caterina for a position in your office. I have no doubt that she will be extremely efficient and contribute to obtaining brillant results, as she is well prepared and keen to face new challenges and to integrate successfuly in any type of professional environment.
Your sincerely, Enrico Fontanari

Graphting architecture catalan pavillon XIV biennale venezia The office Estudi d’arquitectura Toni Gironès was invited to partecipate to Catalan Pavillion at the 14th Venice Biennale, curated by Rem Koolhas. I was responsible for selecting and organizing the images for the exhibition. In addition I collaborated to the design of the final layout (pictured right). The project presented by the office was the space mound transmitter (2007-2013). In particular the presentation focused on the process of the design: the croquis, the study models, and the first drawings are presented as well as the elements of the constructions (bricks, steel..). Just at the end of the presentation ( behind the panels) the finished project is presented.

PERGOLA Estudi d’arquitectura Toni Gironès I was the sole designer of this project, a pergola for the terrace of a penthouse in a historic building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner in Avenida República Argentina, Barcelona. The pergola consists of a light an elastic steel-rod structure covered in a bamboo mat to create shade. I followed all the steps from the initial drawing to the execution. I also led the team of the construction workers.

This project is about the refurbishment of a historic farmhouse in Mont-roig (Spain) where the artist Mirò lived. I partecipated in all stages of preparation. At the begining I was in charge of drafting some initial proposals for the strategy to adopt in the design. I was involved also in researching which plants there were in the garden when Mirò was living in the Masia. Based on this resarch, the team developed a new landscaped garden with the original plants and a new walking routes, suited to the new destination of the building as a public space. I was also in charge of developing the detail 1:10 of a proposed new building made of clay. In the final phase, I was responsble for design of the layout and the production the booklet dina4 of the proposal.

REUSE_BUILDING ON THE LAKE This project is about the refurbishment of a former hospital building on Lake Lugano, dating back to the 17th century. My strategy is to keep the main villa and demolish the outbuildings, which have no particular architectural value. The space freed up by the demolition of the outbuildings is used to create a new piazza on the lake, making up for the lack of public spaces in the area. The floorspace lost is recovered in a new low-impact high-rise building. I envisage the new constuction as a landmark on scale with the landscape. The facade is made of glasscovered concrete, which reflects the surrounding nature merging into it.

PRODUCTIVE BORDERS
An education centre for sustainability, Mendrisio (CH) The project started with a large-scale analysis of the area around Mendrisio. I chose to place the building site on an existing slope along the road where all the main public buildings are located. The new school takes its triangular shape from the site itself. The aim is to create a space that projects the view onto the landscape. The structure consists of an external wall made of pillars protecting from the street and on the inside pillart with two hands opens the bulding totally towards the landscape.

REFURBISHMENT IUAV, 2011
Refurbishment of San Giovanni curch, Venzone
Professor Mario Piana
REFURBISHMENT OF THE CHURCH OF SAN GIOVANNI Venzone The Church of San Giovanni is an abandoned building in the centre of Venzone (Friuli Venezia Giulia). This Church was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1976. It was bulit around 1400 and modified in the 16th, 17th, and 18th century. My idea was to preserve the ancient stucture, giving it a new function as a place of memory. I planned a permanent openair exhibition of the pieces of the church collapsed after the earthquake.

KAFKA’S STUDIO IUAV, 2011
Professor Franca Pittaluga
KAFKA’S STUDIO I developed 5 projects around the idea of shaping space through light, as part of a BA course on interior design. I started from the concept of a path of light leading from the surface to an underground space. I thought of an ideal writer’s studio based on the figure and works of Franz Kafka. Drawing on his notion of ‘burrowing’, I designed a writing space which was to be simultaneously remote and yet illuminated by natural light trough a spiral structure.

FOUNDATION FOR MUSIC Venezia, Giudecca
The workshop consisted in designing a building for a new music foundation in Venice. In particular in this atelier the problem of how to build in a historic city as Venice was investigated. The project was designed based on the extrusion of the existing site. In this way all the spaces (theatre, bar, bookshop, student house) were moulded. In this way we created a new form from the existing one.
